Indonesia Has Modern International Pesantren President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has inaugurated the establishment of Modern Dea Malela Islamic Boarding School (pesantren) in Sumbawa, West Nusa Tenggara. Jokowi expressed his amazement at the modern structure of the pesantren buildings that are unique adjusted the contour of the hill. “This will be an international campus, God willing. It is not a dream, it will become a reality,” said Jokowi, as reported by setkab.go.id on Monday (7/30). Dea Malela Islamic Boarding School is projected as an international Islamic education institution. The boarding school’s auditorium is to be named after Jokowi, Engineer Joko Widodo. “I think the auditorium is quite huge. I don’t know yet, but I already said yes,” said Jokowi. setkab.go.id
He also reminded Indonesia as a nation with a lot of differences ranging from ethnicity, culture, to the religion. Even so, Indonesian people can still unite in these differences. “Therefore, I invite all of us to take care of the Islamic brotherhood, to care for the brotherhood of the Wathaniyah, because this is our common duty in facing the differences,” said Jokowi. In that event, the President asserted that this livestock exhibition illustrates how the livestock in our country is growing so fast. The Head of State also said that post-slaughter processed meat products, such as nuggets and sausages are now being exported. He believes that this is a proof of giant leap in the livestock industry. “Post-slaughter processed meat products, such as nuggets and sausages began to pour into Japanese mar-
ket, and will be soon exported to Vietnam and Malaysia. I think it is a leap in the livestock industry that hopefully can improve our trade balance because we have many exportoriented products,” the President added. Regarding Freeport, President Jokowi: We Have Made Impressive Progress President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo responded to the comments made by some parties who considered that the divestment of 51 percent of PT Freeport Indonesia’s shares to the Government of Indonesia through stateowned mining holding company PT Indonesia Asahan Alumunium (Inalum) has not been binding. The President went on to explain that first process must be the Head of Agreement (HoA), which will be followed up by a second, third agreement, and so on. “I need to say, the deal took a long process of almost 3.5 years, almost 4 years and this is very tough. If it can get into the Head of Agreement, it has been a very impressive progress,” the President told reporters after giving a public lecture on the 2nd Batch of National Defense Training of Democratic National (Nasdem) Party, in the Nasdem National Defense Academy Building, Pancoran, Jakarta, on Monday (16/7). The President asserted that it does not mean that the agreement is directly signed, as the negotiation took a long process of 3.5 years. “Alhamdulillah we are grateful for the progress,” the President firmly said.
As reported earlier, the Government of Indonesia through PT Inalum with Freeport-McMoran Inc. (FCX) and Rio Tinto have signed the Head of Agreement related to the sale of FCX shares and Rio Tinto’s participation rights in PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) to Inalum, at the Ministry of Finance, Jakarta, on Thursday (12/7). “The Inalum’s share ownership in PTFI after the sale of shares and rights is now 51 percent from the previous figure of 9.36 percent,” Minister of Finance Sri Mulyani Indrawati told a press conference at the Ministry of Finance on Thursday (12/7) afternoon. According to Sri, under the Agreement, Inalum will spend 3.85 billion USD to obtain Rio Tinto’s participation right in PTFI and 100 percent of FCX at PT Indocopper Investama, which owns 9.36 percent of PTFI’s shares. “The parties will complete this sale before the end of 2018,” Sri said. Meanwhile, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Ignasius Jonan added that, with the signing of this Agreement, the whole agreement with FCX, which includes divestment of 51 percent shares, changes from Contract of Work to the Special Mining Permit (IUPK) have been completed including the commitment to building smelter facilities. Manufacturing industry plays a major role in increasing Indonesia’s export value, one of which is the exports to Australia. In the first quarter of 2018, Indonesia’s exports to Australia from the manufacturing sector recorded an increase of 18.7 percent, to US$399.3 million from US$336.3 million in the same period in 2017. “The government is spurring the exports, especially from the manufacturing industry. This sector is considered able to provide significant contributions in boosting the national economic growth and reduce the trade deficits,” said Industry Minister Airlangga Hartarto in Jakarta, on Tuesday (7/17). The upswing in the manufacturing industry lifted the Indonesia’s total export to Australia in the first quarter of 2018 to US$667.8 million
or a 13.1 percent increase compared to the same period last year. The increase in manufacturing exports to the Kangaroo Country was driven by the growth of a number commodities, namely electronics, plastics and plastic products, metal products, machinery, wood products, and rubber products. Meanwhile, the major role of the industry in the export structure of Indonesia in 2017 is able to contribute up to 74.10 percent with the value of US$125.02 billion, up 13.14 percent compared to 2016 about US$109.76 billion. In the first quarter of 2018, the manufacturing industry recorded a total export value of US$32 billion, up 4.5 percent compared to the achievement in the same period last year of US$30.6 billion. The
three manufacturing sectors with the largest export value in the first quarter of 2018 are food industry at US$7.42 billion, basic metal industry at US$3.68 billion, and chemicals and chemical goods at US$3.25 billion. So far, Indonesia’s leading export commodities to the Kangaroo Country are furniture, chemical products and processed rubber, food and beverages, textiles, and electronics. Airlangga said that his ministry is still intending to increase further RI’s exports to Asutralia, especially for completely built up (CBU) vehicles either driven with fuel or electricity. “Because the automotive factories there are all closed. A Task Force unit to oversee the licensing process has been formed in each province. Luhut Offers Kulonprogo and Komodo Airports to India The government offers several airport development projects in Indonesia to the Indian government. This issue was discussed in a meeting between Coordinating Minister for Marine Affairs Luhut Binsar Panjaitan and Indian Ambassador to Indonesia Pradeep Kumar Rawat. Deputy of Infrastructure Coordination Division of the ministry Ridwan Djamaluddin said India is interested to invest in several national airports, including the Kulonprogo Airport in Yogyakarta, the Komodo Airport in Labuan Bajo, and the Silangit Airport in North Sumatra. “There are many other airports that India may be interested in. Indonesia Agrees on First UN International Migration Document The final draft of Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM) was agreed upon by UN member states at the sixth-round negotiation on July 9-13, 2018. This is historic since the GCM is the first document on the governance of international migration. The result is the number of Indonesian tourists visiting Taiwan in 2017 increased by 46% from the previous year, to more than 189,000 people. The Consul General of Indonesia in Karachi, Mr. Totok Prianamto, along with officials from the Indonesian Consulate General in Karachi, held a meeting with Ms. Naheed Memon, the Chairwoman of the Sindh Board of Investment (SBI) in her office in Karachi on 4 July 2018. The SBI is a Sindh Province government body which facilitate and coordinate incoming investment in the province. The body also oversee the implementation of Special Economic Zones (SEZs) in the province. The Consul General conveyed that one of his mission is to foster the economic, trade and investment relations between Indonesia and Pakistan, particularly in the Sindh Province. He commended the Sindh government role in encouraging the investment in the Province, through the betterment of security and overall investment climate. The Consul General stressed that it is the government’s duty to create a better business climate. He stated that the Government of Indonesia also striving to achieve that through deregulations, simplifications of investment procedure and all in all convincing and ensuring the security and profitability of investments to the investors. al added that it is imperative to know which sectors are potential to be the areas of cooperation. Responding to the statement, Ms. Memon conveyed that there are a lot of sectors with enormous investment potential. Pakistan, she said, is a fast-developing country with large demographics, creating massive consumption and mentioned sectors such as health, food processing, vocational education and mining as examples. To that end, Ms. Memon proposed that the SBI become a strategic partner to the Consulate General to promote investment potential of Sindh Province to Indonesian investors, and vice versa, through scheduled seminars. The Consul General welcomed the initiative. He also informed the SBI that the Consulate General will hold the Palm Oil Fair of Indonesia (POFI) 2018 in Karachi on 6 September 2018. It will consist of seminar and exhibition regarding Indonesian palm oil and will invite Indonesian public and private stakeholders in palm oil. Sidrap Wind Power Plant Supplies 75 MW Electricity to South Sulawesi
Manado-Bitung Toll Road Project Funded by BNI PT Bank Negara Indonesia Tbk (BNI) has participated in financing the Manado-Bitung Toll Road Project. The project is carried out by PT Jasamarga Manado Bitung (JMB), a consortium of three state-owned enterprises (SOEs) of PT Jasa Marga, PT Wijaya Karya, and PT Pembangunan Perumahan. BNI’s funding for the toll road development project is in the form of additional Working Capital Credit (KMK) and Land Acquisition Fund (DTT) amounting to a maximum of Rp623.56 billion. The KMK and DTT from BNI added to a simi-
lar funding facility disbursed in 2017, supported by a BNI’s subsidiary, with maximum amount of Rp816 billion. The KMK and DTT agreement was signed by BNI and PT Jasamarga Manado Bitung in Jakarta on Tuesday (7/17). The signing ceremony was attended by Jasa Marga Finance Director Donny Arsal, Managing Director of PT Jasamarga Manado Bitung George IMP Manurung, and General Manager for SOEs & Government Institutions Division of BNI AAG Agung Dharmawan. The 39.9-kilometer toll road
is the first one operating in North Sulawesi province with a concession period of 40 years. The BNI’s portion in the Investment Credit (KI) scheme is Rp652 billion or equivalent to 18.2 percent of the syndicated banking loan of Rp3.59 trillion. Agung Dharmawan said that BNI added the KMK and DTT financing facility for the project amounting to Rp623 billion, bringing the total fund to Rp992 billion. “If it is added with the Investment Credit (KI) facility from BNI, PT Jasamarga Manado Bitung will get a total fund of Rp1.6 trillion,” he add-
ed. The total investment needed to built the Manado-Bitung Toll Road, according to him, is Rp5.12 trillion. About 70 percent of the fund or amounting to Rp3.59 trillion will be sourced from the syndicated banking loan, including from BNI. The KMK and DTT facility is also provided by BNI’s subsidiary of BNI Syariah. President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has inaugurated the operation of several power generation projects in South Sulawesi, including the Sidrap Wind Power Plant (PLTB) with a capacity of 75 Mega Watt (MW). President Jokowi said, Indonesia has a huge potential for Renewable Energy (EBT), especially wind and geothermal. However, currently the utilization is not optimal. “We have a great potential, for geothermal the potential is 29,000 MW. It has been utilized at about 2,000 MW or only 10 percent,” President Jokowi said when inaugurating the operation of several power plants at the location of Sidrap PLTB, South Sulawesi, on Monday (7/2). Sidrap PLTB, South Sulawesi, was officially connected to the Southern Sulawesi electricity network system on April 4, 2018. The construction of this power plant is in line with the government’s target to increase the portion of Renewable Energy (EBT) to 23 percent of the total national energy usage by 2025. As many as 30 Wind Turbine Generators (WTG) have been installed at Sidrap PLTB, producing electricity for the Southern Sulawesi network. Rappang Regency, South Sulawesi, uses 40 percent Domestic Component (TKDN) level and absorbs around 1,150 workers. Covering a land area of 100 hectares, the height of the turbines is 80 meters equipped with 57 meterlong propellers. This area has become a tourist destination especially for the people in South Sulawesi, which is about 150 km from Makassar City. “By saying ‘Bismillahirahmannirohim’ I officially open the wind power plant in Sidrap,” the president said. According to Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Ignasius Jonan, Sidrap PLTB is the first wind power plant operating in Indonesia. The construction process takes 2.5 years. Sidrap PLTB is able to supply electricity to 150,000 households with 450 Volt Amper (VA) electric meter. “We announce that at this location the 75 MW PLTB has been completed built. This is the first commercial PLTB ever built in Indonesia,” he said. In addition to Sidrap PLTB, President Jokowi also inaugurated the operation of another power plants, namely the Punagaya power plant with a capacity of 2x100 Mega Watt (MW) and a 2x135 MW capacity of Jeneponto power plant expansion. The construction of Patimban Port will be done by a consortium of Penta OceanToa-Rinkai-Wika-PP. While the funding will come from the Japan International Co-
operation Agency (JICA). In the financing agreement with JICA, there are 10 work packages to be carried out. “In this JICA loan terms, there are 10 work packages. The Phase I consists of three construction packages, one supervision package and two operator consultant packages. Then, there is one package from Public Works and Public Housing Ministry (PUPR) and one supervision package at PUPR. The phase II will be carried out in mid2020. “The fifth package is building terminal, and the sixth package is dredging the post basin to be done in one year after,” he said. East Java Governor Soekarwo has said that the provincial government will continue to improve the public services by upscaling the human resources and enhancing the performance of bureaucracy. The improvement is expected to have a positive impact on investment, infrastructure and tourism in East Java. The system is run by the One Stop Service and Investment Office (DPMPTSP) of East Java Province. “EJISC provides information needed by the investors like the available lands for investments, making it easier for the investors both domestic and overseas to make decision,” the governor said. He further said that in 2017 the foreign direct investment (PMA) in the province reached Rp269.87 trillion, up significantly from the previous year of Rp37.34 trillion. The domestic investment (PMDN) in 2017 also increased to Rp58.28 trillion, from the previous year of Rp24.09 trillion. In the infrastructure sector, East Java provincial government will continue to
develop toll roads and the acceleration of the construction of double track railway. Meanwhile in the marine infrastructure, the ports will also continue to be developed, including the construction of new ones in Probolinggo and in Prigi as a pioneer in southern Java. “For the air infrastructure, we are developing Abdurahaman Saleh Airport, Malang, to become an international airport,” said Pakde Karwo. According to the tourism data, the number of foreign tourists in in 2017 was 625,729 people or an increase of 1.15 percent from the previous year of 618,615 people. Tourism Minister Arief Yahya has said that to make Central Sulawesi a world-class destination, the Mutiara SIS Al-Jufrie Airport in Palu should serve direct international flights. “About 75% foreign tourists want direct flights, so Central Sulawesi has to make it happen if it wants to attract more tourists from other countries,” said Arief when launching the Central Sulawesi Calendar of Events 2018, accompanied by Central Sulawesi Governor Longki Djanggola at the Tourism Ministry, Jakarta, on Tuesday (7/17). The minister further explained that promoting tourism needs elements of 3A (Attractions, Amenities, and Accessibility). The main attraction in Central Sulawesi is
maritime tourism, with its icon of Togean National Park, claimed as one of the best underwater destinations in Indonesia. Unfortunately, the nearest town to Togean, named Ampana, is about 370 km from Palu or 8 hours driving. Therefore, the development of access to Togean Island is urgently needed. “Togean Island is the best island in Indonesia for underwater attractions. Unfortunately, to get there we need 8 hours driving, ideally 2-3 hours. There must be a flight from Palu to Ampana,” said Arief. According to him, the Mutiara Airport has met the specifications as an international airport for its runway has the length of 2,500 meters and width of 45 me-

The conference was titled 2nd Indonesia International Graduate Conference of Communication (INDO IGCC), held on July 11-12, 2018 at the FISIP UI in Depok. About 100 postgraduate students of FISIP UI and representatives
of 12 countries engaged in discussions with the theme “Mode of Communication and Mode of Production from Human to Post Human”. Quoted by detik.com, Chairman of 2nd INDO IGCC Committee Irwansyah said, “First, we build the issue of post truth where the symptoms of post truth already exist. In the first INDO IGCC, we discuss Brexit and Donald Trump becoming president. On that basis we then build the idea of how to study the
post truth in Indonesia, thank God finally the idea spread throughout Indonesia and became a topic of conversations in the academic world including the practitioners and professionals.” Regarding the post human issue which became the theme of 2nd INDO IGCC, Irwansyah discussed the development of technology that makes dependency. There must be a collective effort to promote awareness so that humans are not controlled by the technology that they created. “If today’s technology users are wise, they can intelligently utilize the technology much better. All this time there is criticism that the post human is considered to cause human amputation for depending on the technology and wanting to live mechanical and linear like technology,” he said. “Therefore we hope that the dynamics of academic community who now pay attention to the post human, will make people in the macro and micro order can develop ideas that technology is created by humans, so do not be too dependent on the technology,” he added. The countries participating in the event are Indonesia,
the United States, Britain, Bangladesh, Finland, Norway, Australia, Pakistan, Norway, the Netherlands, Belgium and Malaysia. Azman Azwan Azmawati from Universiti Sains Malaysia, as a speaker at the final session of the reflection of the conference, said that she was very interested in the post human study in the critical thinking approach. “Okay, because I am going to reflect at the end of the discussion, it is good, the artificial intelligent is good, the technology is good, but nothing beats the brain that God gives human, that’s what I’m saying it’s a tool but it’s not our masters,” she said. The Indonesian Biological Olympiad team (TOBI) again brought the good news by presenting four silver medals from the International Biology Olympiad (IBO) 2018. Indonesian students competed with 265 students from 68 countries participating in the 29th IBO held in Tehran, Iran, on July 15-20, 2018. The four Indonesian students winning the IBO 2018 medals are Samuel Kevin Pasaribu (SMA Unggul Del, North Sumatera), Syailendra Karuna Sugito (SMA Semesta BBS, Semarang), Aditya David Wirawan (SMAK 1 Petra, Surabaya) and Silingga Metta Jauhari (SMAN 8 DKI Jakarta ) The 29th IBO was opened officially on Sunday, July 15, 2018, by the Education Minister of Iran in Tehran. In the opening ceremony, President of IBO Dr. Poonpipope Kasemsap said that in addition to competing, the collaboration and networking are two important things that must be built by the young scientists in the future. On Tuesday, July 17, 2018, the IBO participants worked on four practice topics for 1.5 hours each. The four topics are: 1) Plant Biology (physiology and adaptation of plants), 2) Biochemistry and Molecular Biol-
ogy (isolation of protein, 3) Animal Biology (observation on leech and mite anatomy), and 4) Microbial Ecology and Evolution. On Thursday, July 19, 2018 the participants worked on two sets of theory questions using a computer with a total working time of six hours. All tests were conducted at Shahid Beheshti University Campus, Tehran. The practice and theory tests are considered more difficult than the previous IBO. Besides, the hot and dry weather in Tehran is another challenge for the Indonesian students. The outcome broke the dream to be gold medal winner for five years in a row. This also indicates the competition is getting tougher. First in the World, Unpad Studied the Compound Molecular Structure of “Mareninne” in International Research Project Unpad is actively involved in a consortium of international research projects that identify the potential of the diatoms Haslea ostrearia in the aquaculture sector. The research project funded by the EU Agency Horizon 2020 which is attended by 21 universities from 12 countries in the world. The “Genus Haslea, New Marine Resources for Aquaculture” or GhaNa (Ghana) project aims to explore the utilization of diatoms mareninne bioactive compound of
Haslea ostrearia, a microalgae in the waters of various sectors. Unpad researchers headed by Professor of Biochemistry from FMIPA, Prof. Dr. Toto Subroto, M.S., focuses on research related to ecophysiology and biochemical aspects. The consortium coordinated by Prof. Jean Luc-Mouget of Universite du Maine, Le Mans, France has divided every member country to work on specific research packages. Research has been ongoing from 2017 to 2021. “(This research) develops new marine resources for blue bio-
technology that focus on antimicrobial, aquaculture, biodiversity, cosmetics, ecophysiology, and others,” said Prof. Toto in the discussion of “Unpad Priority Research and Cooperation for Prosperous Society (Riung Karsa)” at Unpad Training Center, Bandung, Friday (27/7) afternoon. Further Prof. Toto explained, mareninne compound is a blue pigment that is often used to green the shells in the western France. Green shells are much in demand especially among the nobility of European society.
This is based on the hypothesis of the benefits of green shells for health. Although it has been used as a natural shell dyes since the 18th century, no research has been able to solve the molecular structure of mareninne. The last recent study concluded mareninne as a glycoside. Through this consortium, Unpad goes further on smashing mareninne structure. Together with two other Unpad researchers, Muhammad Yusuf, PhD, and Fiddy Semba Prasetya, PhD, Prof. Toto traced
the structure of mareninne compounds and their role. “We have made progress from this research,” Prof. said. Toto. Currently, the research is entering the stage for publication. Successfully raising the economic value of shellfish, mareninne becomes an interesting study for science. One of the interesting functions of mareninne is its ability to be an antibiotic. Mareninne compounds effectively increase endurance, especially in shrimp and shellfish larvae. During this time, continued Prof. Toto, shrimp seed
or larvae are susceptible to death due to weak metabolism power against bacteria and virus attacks. “Mareninne is expected to be applied in ponds or shrimp and shellfish cultivation,” Prof. said. Being Favored, Kendal Industrial Park Now Houses 80 Factories The Kendal Industrial Park in Central Java, managed by PT Kawasan Industri Jababeka Tbk (KIJA), has been filled with 80 factories. “The land plots used by these factories are averagely under 100 hectares,” said Chairperson & Founder of Jababeka Group Setyono Djuandi Darmono in Cikarang, Bekasi, on Tuesday (26/6) quoted by industry. co.id as saying. According to Darmono, the current revenue growth from the Kendal Industrial Park has stabilized the financial performance of Jababeka. The company is no longer experiencing a deficit in its efforts to develop the estate. “The condition is in line with the company’s target to make Kendal the main source of revenue later. The area has been well prepared by the company to become the most complete and integrated industrial estate,” he said. With such a concept, Darmono added, a businessman who operates his business in this industrial park has the certainty in doing business and expansion. “So, the managing company of Kendal Industrial Park no longer needs to cover the management expense, neither needs the money from the shareholders; it has been running well,” he said. In mid-June 2018, there are 43 investors ready to build factories in Kendal Industrial Park. The investors are engaged in the manufacturing of furniture, food, food packaging, steel, label printing, and toys. There are five companies that have been operating in Kendal Industrial Park, namely PT Tat Wai Industries from Singapore with a land area of about 10,000 square meters, running a business in furniture; PT APP Timber, PT Ganda Sugih Arthaboga, PT Roda Maju Bahagia, and PT Multifilling Indonesia. In its September 2017 financial statements, the KIJA’s subsidiary PT KI Kendal reported to own assets worth Rp1.49 trillion, growing 20.10% from Rp1.24 trillion in the same period of previous year. Cikarang Dry Port More Efficient with IoT Technology Cikarang Dry Port as the only land port in Indonesia is now increasingly sophisticated with the application of internet of things (IoT) technology. This was revealed by Managing Director of PT Cikarang Inland Port (Cikarang Dry Port managing company) Benny Woenardi during the Asia IoT Business Platform Media Day at Ritz-Carlton Hotel Jakarta on Wednesday (7/4). The digitalization by utilizing the IOT technology has proven to drive efficiency and cutting the business procedures while increasing the productivity. With these perceived benefits, more than 83% of Indonesian business players are currently exploring or even implementing the IoT technology solutions, according to the survey of Asia IoT Business Platform in ASEAN last year. According to the survey, 11.8% of businesses have implemented IoT and 5.1% have benefited from implementing it, while 29% are exploring the existing
IoT solutions, and 37% are gathering facts and studying the IoT solutions. Meanwhile, the latest Asia IoT Business Platform 2018 survey on ASEAN companies is underway and the results will be presented at the 25th Asia IoT Business Platform (AIBP) in Jakarta, to be held on August 28-29, 2018. From the beginning of its 5-year operation, the throughput volume at Cikarang Dry Port continues to increase. With this cooperation, Balitbang ESDM will support the study of the fulfillment of electricity needs in all ports managed by IPC, especially from renewable energy sources. “The ESDM Research and Development Team have the resources to map the port’s energy needs. On the other hand, IPC needs this mapping to ensure the fulfillment of energy needs, such as electricity in

More than 2,000 products, from the children’s toys and equipment industry, including baby and child toys, baby equipment, children’s clothing, baby furniture, learning support, to playing stuff, were on display. The 2018 IITE was held jointly by the ChaoYu Expo and Peraga Expo. The data from Central Statistics Agency (BPS) show the value of imported toys, games and sports equipment reached US$ 240.2 million, equivalent to Rp3.24 trillion, as of October 17, 2017. This figure grew 49.91% compared to the same period the previous year which amounted to US$160.2 million or around Rp2.16 trillion. The most imported toys are ice skates and roller skates with a volume of 5.77 tons. Next is toy cards at 3.19 tons, marbles at 2.79 tons, and model assembly such as airplane models at 1.87 tons. INDONESIA-JAPAN STRATEGIC COOPERATION IN MOROTAI

2018, marks the 60th anniversary of Indonesia-Japan relations. It establishes on 20 January 1958 with the Signing of the Treaty of Peace between Japan and Indonesia. After the exchange of ratification, diplomatic relations was established. Since its establishment, the friendship and cooperation between the respective countries have been strengthened. The relations between the two countries have been strengthened significantly over the years, reflected in the increased mutual visit between the two leaders as well as senior officials in the past few years. Both countries are actively engage at regional and international forum and continue to cooperate in strengthening peace and stability in the region. In term of investment, Japan is the second biggest investor to Indonesia and one of the main trade partners to Indonesia. Both countries have engaged in Strategic Partnership for Peaceful and Prosperous Future signed on 28 November 2006 as well as Indonesia – Japan Economic Partnership Agreement signed on 20 August 2007. Japan’s investment in Indonesia in 2016 reached US$ 5.4 billion, while until the 3rd quarter 2017, Japan’s investment has reached US$ 4 billion. At the same time, the index of doing business in Indonesia jumped up from 114th position in 2015 to 72nd in 2017. Both countries have been cooperating not only in the field of economy, politics and security, but also the people-to-people exchange. Japan has commitment to sustainable work with Indonesia government in various fields, including the sector of maritime affairs and fisheries. It remarks how Japan with Indonesia becomes strategic partner especially in the fishery sector. Many Indonesian fishery products are exported to Japan such as tuna, squid and some species of reef fish. These two countries also agreed to strengthen bilateral cooperation in maritime affairs, counterterrorism, infrastructure development and manufacturing, with the Japanese willing to expand their production base in Indonesia, mostly in creating Indonesia Japan’s production base for its ASEAN market. The two countries signed an exchange of note on the Integrated Marine and Fisheries Centers and Fish Market to enhance cooperation in developing fisheries centers on Indonesia’s outer islands, including Biak in Papua, Morotai in North Maluku and Sabang in Aceh. Indonesia government has encouraged Japanese government to invest in Indonesian fisheries and develop its outermost islands. Minister for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Susi Pudji-
astuti stated that Japan has a big interest in developing the maritime affairs and fisheries sector in Indonesia. It is proved by Japan’s outstanding commitment to grant 6 billion yen or equivalent to Rp724.2 billion. Additionally, the grant will be used to build 6 Integrated Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Centers (SKPT) in six outer islands of Indonesia. The six islands offered are Sabang, Natuna, Morotai, Saumlaki, Moa, and Biak. The fund uses to install 6 units of coastal radars, building fish markets and cold storage facility. For the SKPT, Japan agreed to build it on the Morotai and Natuna Island. SKPT development begins with the groundbreaking in 2018. Morotai, one of the outermost islands that will be a joint project between the Indonesian and Japanese governments to develop the fishery sector as Japanese love tuna, skipjack, and mackerel. Japan should keep helping Indonesia in developing the fishery sector in the future. The Japanese fishery companies in Indonesia from year to year continue to increase their investment and production capacity. The relation between Japan and Indonesia is always very good and since years ago most of the Indonesian fishery products have been exported to Japan. Japanese government has been aware of the big potential of fish industry in Indonesia and a Japanese fishery company plans to move its plant from Thailand to Indonesia. In 2017, total trade between the two countries increased by around 13 percent to more than US$33 billion, making Japan Indonesia’s second biggest trade partner, just after China. Japan was also the second largest investor into Indonesia, making up 15.5 percent of total foreign direct investment (FDI) with US$5 billion. After U.S atomic bomb to Hiroshima and Nagasaki on 6 and 9 August 1945, Japan’s national interest lies eternally in keeping Asia’s seas unequivocally open, free, and peaceful mostly in maintaining them as the commons for all the people of the world, where the rule of law is fully realized. Thus, to achieve these goals, since 1950 to the present day Japan has consistently devoted its energy in two objectives. In light of its geographic circumstances, the two objectives are natural and fundamental imperatives for Japan, a nation surrounded by ocean and deriving its sustenance from those oceans, a na-

tion that views the safety of the seas as its own safety. Though times may change, these objectives remain immutable. One of these areas where Japan has concentrated its diplomatic effort is to ally with the U.S. America is the world’s greatest naval power and preeminent economic superpower. While Japan is Asia’s largest maritime democracy and a liberal capitalist state second only to the U.S. It stands to reason that these two nations are strategic partners. The U.S is shifting its focus to the confluence of the two oceans, the Indian and the Pacific region. At such a time, the Japan-U.S alliance takes on a more vital significance than ever before. The second of the two vital objectives that have kept shaping the diplomacy of Japan depends on the seas for its safety and prosperity which strengthening closer ties with maritime Asia. In 1983, Takeo Fukuda, then prime minister of Japan, made three promises to the members of ASEAN. Japan would never become a military power. Japan would forge ties with ASEAN based on heart to heart understanding. And Japan would be an equal partner of ASEAN and its member countries. DR. (HC) S.D. Darmono, President University’s founder - Prof. Scott Younger OBE DEng (Hon) PhD, International Chancellor, President University
One of the latest alumni of Glasgow University is President University’s founder, Dr S D Darmono, also chairman of Jababeka, who was honoured with a D Univ (Hon) in June this year. While President University is a young, active upwardly mobile institution and an important contributor to the development of Indonesia, Glasgow University is one of the oldest universities in the world with a long pedigree. So the following few paragraphs provide some notes on its history and the key people there who made significant contributions to mankind’s development over the centuries. Following the issuance of a papal decree in 1451, Glasgow’s university, located in the centre of the city, started from humble beginnings. Religious studies and arts were the main subjects before the 18th century Enlightenment started to open minds to new enquiries of a more scientific and technological nature. The second half of the 18th century was the time of such intellectual ‘giants’ as David Hume (philosopher) and Adam Smith. The latter was a student of David Hume, then became professor of moral philosophy and later professor of economics who wrote his seminal work, The Wealth of Nations, while at Glasgow. He left Glasgow for Oxford University only to be enticed back and is reputed to have commented that at Glasgow there would be ‘less drinking and more thinking’! It was at the university in the 1780s while experimenting in his laboratory with steam that James Watt invented and developed his condenser, paving the way for the future of steam power and the birth of the Industrial Revolution, triggering the astonishing pace of human endeavour and production that has taken place over the past two centuries. The first small steam ship, Bell’s Comet, sailed on the River Clyde in 1809
and some twenty years later two dredgers were built which allowed the dredging of the upper reaches of the river bringing the industry up towards the western edge of the city and transforming the engineering developments based on the city. During the Napoleonic wars around the turn of the century, military leaders began to pay more attention to logistics matters for moving troops quickly to battlefields, resulting in increasing attention to transport issues and the maintenance of roads. Following the treaty of Versailles in 1816 to signal the end of the Napoleonic period of strife, engineers realised that many of the activities that had evolved during this wartime could well be put to civil use, particularly since there was a growing desire to travel within Europe. A few fairly young engineers in 1818 got together and formed the Institution of Civil Engineers, marking out civil engineering as a subject in its own right. Glasgow University in the following decade, appreciating the need to pass on the knowledge of road building and the upcoming idea for railways, as well as engineering structures decided to establish a Faculty of Civil Engineering, the first in the world. Today, President University’s new Civil Engineering department is a valuable, if not necessary, contribution towards the development of this country, Until the mid-1800s, the considered opinion was that the killer diseases of cholera and typhoid were miasmas, air-borne. In the mid-1800s, medical work finally demonstrated that the diseases were water-borne and the first ever clean water system was built to provide for the city of Glasgow, a pipeline from Loch Katrine, located some 40 km to the north of the city and working to this day. In the 1860s, the university moved to its current site, a drum-
lin (residue from the retreat of the Ice Age leaving a large mound of highly compacted soil), Gilmorehill, on top of which the architect Gilbert Scott’s magnificent building sits as the beacon of the city. The second half of the 19th century saw an impressive period of activity in chemistry, physics, medicine and engineering, including the work of Lord Kelvin, arguably the pre-eminent scientist of the period. Included in his work was his contribution to the laying of the trans-Atlantic cable and the Absolute scale for temperature, the Kelvin scale. Professor Lister introduced antiseptics in surgery and his name appears in any Indonesian Apotik under the brand name Listerine! Joseph Black in chemistry and Lord Rankine in engineering are just some other major names that have carried down the years. In 1896 the world’s first X-ray department was opened by John MacIntyre. These were also the halcyon days of shipbuilding and heavy engineering and Glasgow was one of, if not the leading, city in the world for many decades. It was a time when ships moved from sail to hybrids and then fully steam driven. Early diesel power emerged later in the 1920s. Jumping ahead into the 20th century in 1913 Frederick Soddy, one of several Nobel prizewinners, discovered isotopes and in 1926 John Logie Baird invented television, now just part of everyday life. In 1958, Ian Donald showed the first ultrasound images of a foetus and 9 years late Jocelyn Bell Burnell discovered radio pulsars, followed in 1974 by the creation of the Glasgow Coma Scale by Graham Teasdale and Bryan Jennett. And even more recently, a Glasgow team led by Sheila Rowan first detected gravitational waves, first postulated by Einstein. The research continues today with cutting edge work proceeding

Glasgow University has a student population of over 26,000 from over 140 countries, and pleasingly an increasing number from Indonesia. It has a research community of 3,000 research and teaching staff, which handle more than 300 postgraduate taught programmes. Some 95% of students are in employment or further study after graduation and the city has been listed in the top 10 of world cities by Tripadviser. UNESCO listed it as the 1st City of Music. But very much the people of the city are friendly and open to visitors. President University is already starting to work with Glasgow and see this as a highly beneficial opportunity to “Move fast” to follow Dr Darmono’s mantra. Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Minister Ignasius Jonan again reminded his staff to keep cutting unnecessary permits and regulations that are considered overlapping and hampering the investment. “Do not issue any hindering regulation, instead I have asked to cut the permits again,” said Jonan when briefing the officials of echelon I, II and III at the Auditorium of the Directorate General of Electricity on Tuesday (7/17). Jonan said that simplifying the license is mandated by President Joko Widodo in a bid to increase the investment and provide a multiplier effect to grow the economy and create more employment. ESDM Minister Ensures Electric Car Program Continues The electric car program is a commitment of the Indonesian government to reduce CO2 emissions by 29 percent in 2030, while maintaining the energy security. Currently, the government is preparing a Presidential Regulation on the Acceleration Program of Electric Motor Vehicle for Land Transportation. “The electric car program must be running, not matter what. The government has no intention to stop the program, we push it instead. The Presidential Regulation is being prepared,” said Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Minister Ignatius Jonan at the Leaders Forum 2018 at PT Pertamina (Persero), Jakarta, Saturday (7/14). According to Jonan, the electric car development is carried out as part of the national energy security program in the transportation sector, to reduce the import of fossil fuel used by the cars to-
day. “The electric car development inevitably has to run, why? Because the electric car is an incredible discovery that fits with the national energy resistance. If there are many electric cars in Indonesia, the primary energy will be the electricity. To generate electricity, we have plenty of fuels here, such as coal, gas, geothermal, and water. For fossil fuel, unfortunately we have to import,” Jonan explained. Electric car is the technology of today as it does not produce carbon emissions. However, its development requires commitment from the government, entrepreneurs, and the user community in preparing the infrastructure, taxation and awareness. I Gede Wir yada Patra Jaya, said the AESL 2018 is a form of real caring for elder people. This event discussed important issues related to the health of the elderly and the tourism packages suitable for them. “Healthy means not only physically but also psychologically. In the second topic of tourism, we want to encourage the elderly to try running a tourism business by creating tour packages for their fellow seniors. This is the first AESL event
in Bali and the response is so incredible,” he said at Hotel Inna Heritage Bali Denpasar on Saturday (7/14). According to dr. SPORTS Borobudur Golf and Country Club Holds 3rd Round Perpesi Joglosemar Gelangmas Tournament On Tuesday (7/26), the 3rd Round of Perpesi Joglosemar Gelangmas Tournament was held at Borobudur International Golf and Country Club. This tournament is a 3-month-routine tournament which is a routine agenda for Perpesi (Indonesian Senior Golfers Association) Region IV in Yogyakarta, Solo, Semarang, Magelang, and Banyumas areas. The tournament was the 3rd round tournament held by the Banyumas Branch of Perpesi. The tournament was attended by 132 golfers consisting of 20 participants from the Banyumas branch, 16 participants from the Magelang branch, 19 participants from the Solo branch, 34 participants from the Semarang branch and 43 participants from the Yogyakarta branch. This tournament was divided into several categories, namely Ladies Flight (maximum handicap 26), Man Flight A (age 55-59, maxi-
mum handicap 18), Man Flight B (age 60-64, maximum handicap 20), Man Flight C (age 6569, maximum handicap 22), Man Flight D (age 70-74, maximum handicap 24), and Man Flight E (age 75-77, maximum handicap 26). The tournament contested for each individual category are Runner Up Nett, Best Nett, Best Gross, Best Net Overall and Best Gross Overal, as well as in team category which are Team Nett and Team Gross. The best Nett Best category was achieved by Rustam Narus from Yogyakarta with a score of 63 with handicap 18. While, Kasdan won Best Gross Overal with a gross score of 74 and handicap 8. Team Nett was won by the Yogyakarta branch of the Perpesi team with a score of nett 207, while Team Gross was won by the team Perpesi Semarang branch with a gross score of nett 241.
