Itʼs never been truer to say that Westwood is a community of volunteers. From support of front-line healthcare workers and first responders, to emergency vehicleled car parades; from shopping for neighbors to financial contributions for local non-profits—every day we are lucky to be able to celebrate Westwood and all its heroes who meaningfully contribute in ways small and large. As a grant-funded initiative of Meals on Wheels North Jersey, Westwood for All Ages has been working to shine a light on the great work being done to support

The Covid-19 virus has turned our world upside down and forced us to make changes that we never imagined we would have to make. Yet, amidst all the fear and isolation, the pandemic has also brought forth enormous waves of generosity and ingenuity. A shining example of this is how two 16-year-old Pascack Valley High School students, Kayla Garfinkel and Emma Petkovitch, created a fundraising campaign to sell T-shirts to raise funds for local hospitals. The light blue unisex shirts, manufactured by CustomInk, come in a large variety of sizes. They have a striking logo of a person wearing a mask and sporting the message, “Be Together Apart.” Garfinkel, a River Vale resident, explains, “Emma and I were both interested in pursuing a career in medicine, so it was natural for us to want to help the medical community. I am also involved because my grandparents tested positive for Covid-19. The hospital workers on the front lines of the Covid-19 pandemic are heroes and they deserve everyoneʼs support!” Emma, who lives in Hillsdale, is also enthused about the project. “The T-shirts cost $23, and we hope to sell 50 of them by May 3.

Updates from the museum

PASCACK VALLEY

The Pascack Historical Society, located at 19 Ridge Ave. in Park Ridge, proactively closed its doors to the public in mid-March as the threat posed by Covid-19 became increasingly apparent. Sadly, like countless other local events, the museumʼs eagerly anticipated spring lectures had to be postponed. A presentation on the history of the Pascack Valley railroad line that had been set for March 22 will be rescheduled in the near future. The museum was to host Park Ridge Day on May 2, followed by a lecture on wampum production in the Pascack Valley, featuring archaeologist Eric Johnson, the following afternoon. Those events, too, have now been postponed. But while the museumʼs doors are closed to visitors for the time being, PHS President Jacqueline A. Martin notes that we are all living through an historic event—that decades from now, there could even be a PHS exhibit dedicated to the pandemic of 2020. “Please help PHS preserve the history we are all living right now by saving images and artifacts that directly relate to the effects of the pandemic in the Pascack Valley— these items will be added to the PHS collection for future generations to study,” she says. For now, you can visit the museum on Facebook (search “Pascack Historical Society”), where old photographs, news clippings, postcards and more are being posted often. For additional information on what the museum has to offer, visit www.pascackhistoricalsociety.org.

The Old Hook schoolhouse in Westwood

In the coming weeks, we will take a look of some of the Pascack Valley schoolhouses of yesterday. You are encouraged to share the photos with your children as you educate them at home. So far weʼve gone to Park Ridge, Hillsdale, and River Vale—next stop, Westwood. The Old Hook School, constructed prior to 1840, was the first school that existed in Westwood. The little red wooden schoolhouse was located at the corner of Old Hook and Sand roads and served kids from Westwood and surrounding areas. It underwent expansions in 1860 and 1879. The book “History of Bergen and Passaic Counties,” published in 1882, describes the school in Westwood. “In 1840 a building 20-by-24 feet in dimensions, one story high and painted red, was erected, which in turn gave place in 1860 to the present structure, built at the expense of the district. This has recently undergone thorough repairing and is fitted with all the modern school room improvements. The property is valued at $1,800 and can accommodate comfortably 80 children.”

Old Hook Road had already gotten its name long before the school came into existence. One of the oldest thoroughfares in the Pascack Valley, it was laid out by surveyors in the 1740s and followed much the same route as it does today. “Old Hook” was the name given to the neighborhood around Emerson, Westwood and Harrington Park, reflecting the shape of the land at the meeting of the Hackensack River, Pascack Brook and Musquapsink Brook. In a 1932 interview, two former Old Hook School students, sisters Kate and Christina Kuhn, were interviewed about the old days. The women, who lived together in a house on Crest Street, lamented that educational standards had slipped since their childhood in the 1870s. At the Old Hook schoolhouse, the ladies said, they learned reading, writing, arithmetic, bookkeeping, algebra, geometry and grammar. “You were ready for college when you went through that school,” asserted Kate, although the school only provided an elementary education. “If I showed you our books, you wouldnʼt believe it. They donʼt have those

PASCACK VALLEY’S HOMETOWN NEWSPAPER

books in any college today…and Mr. Bingham had 125 pupils sometimes! Teachers today have about 30.” The women recalled that school hours were 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and children brought lunch. Some walked to school, while horsedrawn buggies carried others. There was no summer vacation, but it was typical for kids to miss classes when their families needed them on the farm. Attendance was sparse in the summer months. “When the potatoes were in, September or October, we went back,” Kate recalled. Two boys carried the schoolʼs

supply of drinking water, drawn from a well at a nearby farmhouse, in those days before indoor plumbing. It was also up to the students to build the fire that would heat the building in the cold months. A couple of older girls would stay late after school on Fridays to give the rooms a cleaning. In 1900, a new school was constructed on Third Avenue in Westwood. The Old Hook School building was sold for $161 in 1903. Later on it was disassembled and moved up the road to the Old Hook Farm to be used as a barn. The bell was sold for 80 cents. —Kristin Beuscher

REMINDS RESIDENTS TO BE COUNTED

Once every ten years, people in in the United States can participate in its democracy by responding to the Census. This opportunity transcends immigrant status, income level, and all barriers to a fair and equal democracy. The League of Women Voters of Northern Valley is committed to ensuring a complete count occurs this decade. Although public health and safety is critical during the COVID-19 pandemic, the United States Constitution requires the U.S. Census Bureau undertake a count of the population each decade. “Everyone must fulfill their constitutional obligation to complete the 2020 Census and count every person in the United States. The countryʼs future depends on this. The Census form can be completed easily online at 2020census.gov, over the phone, or by mail,” said Joyce Luhrs, Vice President of Marketing, League of Women Voters of Northern Valley. As of mid-April over 70 million households had responded, representing over 48% of all households in America. Ensuring a complete and accurate count is critical to federal funding, political representation, and economic development. In 2010, New Jersey lost a seat in the House of Representatives due to the Census count results. If people are underrepresented in the 2020 Census count, important public services will receive less funding. Each year, New Jersey receives almost $23 billion in federal funding for social service programs, including Medicare, Head Start, Section 8 Housing Vouchers, the National School Lunch Program, roads, libraries, health clinics, and other essential programs. Businesses also use Census data to decide where to build and grow, directly affecting New Jerseyʼs economic development. The Census is safe and confidential. Under Title 13 of the U.S. Code, the responses and all information are protected by federal law and cannot be shared with law enforcement agencies. Answers can only be used to provide statistics and cannot be used against a responder. “Tell friends, families, houses of worship, local governments, schools, and other community groups you are involved with to complete the Census and to make sure your community gets counted. By answering 10 easy questions from the comfort of your home, you can do your part to ensure your community and its needs are known,” said Luhrs. National, state and local Leagues are undertaking activities and actions to ensure a complete count of the population. People interested in learning more or in helping with this effort may contact Shannon Currie, LWVNV

MEALS ON WHEELS STARVING FOR SUPPORT DURING COVID-19 PANDEMIC

Meals on Wheels North Jersey has been providing nutritious meals to homebound senior citizens and individuals with disabilities since 1972. Prior to the Coronavirus outbreak, their clients received two fresh meals and a daily well check by a friendly volunteer each weekday. The increase in those affected by the virus over the last few weeks, however, has required the Westwood-based organization to completely reinvent how they deliver meals.

Having their two local kitchens housed in health care facilities meant restricted access at first and then finally a need to pull out of those locations completely due to increased safety precautions. They initially delivered an additional supply of their “blizzard boxes” to their clients which contain five daysʼ worth of shelf stable meals. Ultimately, though, they transitioned to providing five daysʼ worth of frozen meals in a onceper-week delivery so as to limit

HELP JACK’S CAFE ‘FEED THE HEROES’

Jackʼs Cafe in Westwood is on a mission to feed the front line healthcare workers at Pascack Valley Medical Center—and you can help. It all started when Chris Schneider of GC Schneider Construction came to Chris DʼEletto and Risa Kandel of Jackʼs Cafe and asked what he could do for the staff at the hospital. “Chris and his family donated $400 to feed a meal to the hospital and ʻFeed the Heroesʼ was born,” DʼEletto explains. Since then, Jackʼs Cafe has raised over $2,000 to feed

these heroes. And, of course, Jackʼs is making all the food. “We send over lunch or dinner a few times a week and the staff of nurses, doctors and maintenance crew are very grateful. These brave employees go in every day knowing what they are facing, battling this pandemic,” DʼEletto said. Help Jackʼs Cafe continue to Feed the Heroes and donate. You can visit Jackʼs Cafe on Facebook, where you will find a link to the fundraiser. Or, call Chris DʼEletto at (201) 6640400.

exposure of their clients and volunteers. “Reinventing how we service our clients has been tough, but we are resilient and resourceful,” said Jeanne Martin, executive director for Meals on Wheels North Jersey. “Our goal remains to keep our clients fed and to connect them to as many resources as we can. We have also started a phone buddy program that keeps our volunteers and our clients together and in touch through regular phone calls.” “The best way to help support our seniors right now is through monetary donations to the program,” said Martin. “The cost to pivot the program to frozen meals has put an unforeseen financial burden on the organization and support from the community would be greatly appreciated.” She adds, “It is very important that you check in with your elderly neighbors to see how they are doing.” You can donate to Meals on Wheels North Jersey via their website, mealsonwheelsnorthjersey.org, or by mailing a donation to Meals on Wheels North Jersey, 100 Madison Ave., Suite 3, Westwood, NJ 07675. They can be reached by phone at 201-358-0050 for more information.

Grilling chicken is an easy way to transform this versatile food into something even more delicious. Various cultures serve chicken in kebab form after grilling it over an open flame, and taste is a big reason this particular method of cooking chicken is so beloved. While you might not expect to see kebabs on the menu at your favorite Italian restaurant, “spiedini” is Italian for “little skewers,” proving that Italian chefs recognize how delicious chicken can be when served in kebab form. In this recipe for “Spiedini of Chicken and Zucchini with

Almond Salsa Verde” from “Cooking Light: Dinnerʼs Ready” (Oxmoor House) by The Cooking Light Editors, skewers are paired with a zesty salsa full of nuts, herbs and citrus, which makes for the perfect complement to the smoky grilled flavor.

Spiedini of Chicken and Zucchini with Almond Salsa Verde (makes 6 servings)

What you need:

Salsa: 1 cup chopped flat parsley

2 tablespoons chopped almonds, toasted 2 tablespoons chopped fresh chives 3 tablespoons capers, chopped 1/2 teaspoon grated lemon rind 3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil 1/2 teaspoon chopped fresh thyme 1/2 teaspoon chopped fresh oregano 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt 1/8 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1 garlic clove, minced

Spiedini: 1 1/2 pounds skinless, boneless chicken breast, cut into 1-inch pieces 6 small zucchini, cut into 1-inch slices (about 1 1/4 pounds) Cooking spray 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt 1/8 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper What to do: Soak 12 (10-inch) wooden skewers in water for 30 minutes to prevent burning. Bring the grill to mediumhigh heat To prepare the salsa, combine the first 12 ingredients; set aside.

Recipe To prepare the spiedini, thread the chicken and zucchini alternately on each of the 12 skewers. Coat the spiedini with cooking spray; sprinkle evenly with 1/4 teaspoon salt and 1/8 teaspoon pepper. Place on a grill rack; grill 6 minutes or until done, turning once. Serve with salsa. Tip: Prepare the salsa up to a day ahead, and assemble the skewers earlier in the day. Coat with the seasonings just before grilling.

Facebook group celebrates those on the front lines During this time of crisis, with Bergen county being at the forefront of the virus in New Jersey, one community is using social media to boost morale. The Facebook group “Local Heroes We Thank You” was created by Maureen McSpirit, a local real estate broker, as a platform to spotlight a different member of our community each day who contributes to keeping our community going and safe.

From health care workers to police officers, firefighters, grocers, mail carriers, truck drivers, ambulance corps workers, the list of essential workers is long and varied. McSpirit said she started the group thinking about how many people around her community are humbly going about their indispensable work and felt they should be acknowledged. “In dark times, we feel itʼs

important to keep spirits up and to maintain a sense of gratitude to the ones who are putting themselves on ʻthe front line,ʼ” McSpirit writes to Pascack Press. Each day the group will feature a member of our community who is nominated. If you know of anyone who you would like to see on the page, you can email her at maureenmcspirit@gmail.com.

The following was submitted by Kelly Marsicano, associate publisher of The Catholic Advocate. The new director of religious education at Our Lady of Mercy in Park Ridge wanted to create a new tradition for the children in the parish. “Theyʼve never had an Easter egg hunt before. I asked the pas-

tor and he said, “Sure.” I got everything ahead of time and then the coronavirus hit,” said Director of Religious Education Evelyn Paglieri. She was left with hundreds of plastic eggs and bags of candy. But, thanks to the power of social media, she found a new home for them—the Joseph M. Sanzari Childrenʼs Hospital at Hackensack University Medical

Center. The weekend before Easter, Paglieri, her husband and her daughter spent more than 10 hours stuffing 875 eggs with candy and bagging them. “Weʼd do a few hours and then stop and go back to it. It was a long haul to finish it,” Paglieri explained, but also noted they had the time due to the stateʼs stay-at-home order. “We

didn't feel it was a hassle. We knew it was the right thing to do.” Paglieri and her daughter, Jackie, dropped the Easter eggs off to staff members outside the hospital on April 7. They were given to the children and the busy doctors and nurses who may not have had time to stuff eggs for their own children. “It felt good knowing I was helping kids who are sick, especially now that there is so much going on with COVID-19,” described Jackie. The donated bags also contained a letter. “Mostly to let them know that we were thinking of them

and praying for them, that weʼre there for them even in this small way, to brighten up their Easter a little bit,” Paglieri said. “We are so grateful for Our Lady of Mercyʼs generous donation of over 800 Easter eggs to Hackensack University Medical Center and Joseph M. Sanzari Childrenʼs Hospital,” said Helen A. Cunning, north regional president and chief development officer at Hackensack University Medical Center Foundation. “The Easter season is one that is very special, and the distribution of the eggs brought so much joy to our team members and youngest patients.”

ERIC KOHLMEIER

Editorʼs note: The following article is for informational purposes only. Submitted by Eric Kohlmeier, Wells Fargo, Park Ridge.

Investment planning is like doing a jigsaw puzzle except the pieces donʼt always come in one box—often you have to gather them from a variety of sources. When putting an investment plan together, you have to combine

Gather All Your Assets

information on assets, debt, insurance, and more to form the full picture of your financial life. However, people often forget about or lose some of their investment planning puzzle pieces, and then the picture is never really complete. Itʼs one reason why many people donʼt have a complete picture of their financial life, says Elizabeth “Liz” Bartley, sales advisory consultant at Wells Fargo Advisors. Why the full picture really matters “From an investment stand-

point, you donʼt really have a good gauge of how much risk you could potentially be taking,” if you arenʼt looking at all of your holdings in conjunction with each other, Bartley says. Itʼs not just investments. Loans, including any student loans, business loans, or mortgages, may impact your overall plan, too. Without this full picture, individuals and their financial advisors end up doing their investment planning based on what amounts to faulty information. And that can result in a risk profile or asset mix that doesnʼt

represent your desires or needs. This is especially common among people who have assets spread across numerous financial institutions—you may have several 401(k) accounts from different jobs maintained at a variety of institutions, some online investments in another place, and your primary portfolio you maintain with your financial advisor. “Understanding how much debt you have versus assets is a starting point for making improvements and creating more wealth over time,” Bartley adds.

Putting the pieces together So how do you collect everything you need? Financial advisors often start with a checklist of important information, Bartley says. Even when most of your assets are with a single company, thereʼs still information to gather from other sources. Ask your financial advisor to keep copies of this information, which can function as a backup for your records. Thatʼs especially valuable, Bartley says, in case anything happens to you. Your complete financial picture may include: • Investment accounts with other institutions. This could include qualified employer-sponsored retirement plans (QRPs), such as a 401(k), 403(b), or governmental 457(b), still at previous employers, and IRAs. • Checking and savings accounts. • Assets you own, such as your primary residence, a second

home, rental property, and valuables—antiques, jewelry, or an art collection. • Debts, including your mortgage, credit card balances, and other loans and lines of credit. • Other investment vehicles, such as long-term care insurance, annuities, and life insurance policies. • Trust funds. • Rental income or other earnings beyond your primary source of income. • Social Security statements. Masks for Miracle Workers raising funds for respirators A local fundraiser has been launched to provide first responders, doctors, nurses, and all other medical professionals who are working in local hospitals with proper personal protective equipment (PPE), such as the N95 respirator. Organized by Park Ridge resident and Ramapo College senior Jason Vradenburg, the fundraiser is called Masks for Miracle Workers (MasksforMiracleWorkers.org). As of April 16, 32 donors had pledged $1,900 toward the $3,000 goal. “It has become abundantly clear that hospitals such as Hackensack University Medical Center and Valley hospital are in desperate need of

more N95 respirators and are actively seeking donations. I decided to create Masks for Miracle Workers once COVID-19 gripped the northern New Jersey and New York area,” Vradenburg tells Pascack Press. Vradenburgʼs initial goal is to raise enough money to purchase 2,000 masks, at $1.50 per unit, to donate to Hackensack University Medical Center in Hackensack, along with Valley Hospital in Ridgewood. “The effort is in part because now more than ever, our state, first responders, and medical professionals need us. While these brave individuals go into work knowing the risks they are taking, they are reusing

old equipment that is never meant to be worn more than once,” he says. “It is absolutely crucial that our frontline workers stay healthy so they can continue to battle this virus. In order for them to do that, they need to be equipped with the proper supplies.”

One-hundred percent of donations will go directly to the purchase of these masks, Vradenburg says. “We are trying our hardest to raise as much money as we can, as fast as possible, so we can quickly place an order to get them to the hos-

pitals,” he adds. “Please visit www.MasksforMiracleWorkers.or g to read how you can help raise the funds needed and read about who I am, and my goals for this campaign. From the bottom of my heart, thank you.”

A lesson in generosity

MAYOR’S COMMITTEE WILL WORK WITH NURSING HOMES

The following was submitted to Pascack Press by the Borough of Emerson.

Emersonʼs local government has taken steps to ensure the residents of the boroughʼs multiple nursing and long-term care facilities are being properly cared for. The move came as a result of a recommendation from the federal government to help protect our countryʼs most vulnerable population who currently account for 59% of COVID fatalities to date. At a council meeting on April 21, the governing body authorized Mayor Danielle DiPaola to form a committee which will work closely with the boroughʼs nursing homes and health care facilities to make sure that not only do the facilities have the equipment they need, but to ensure that the patients are being treated properly. “It is our duty as family members to care for our elderly, but what happens when family members are no longer allowed in?” said DiPaola. “I feel a personal responsibility to the patients and their families receiving care in Emerson.” It has been reported that healthcare facilities throughout the country and especially in New

Jersey have mistreated the most vulnerable population. Both patients and employees of these facilities have not been properly protected against the spread of COVID-19. Currently Emersonʼs Emergency Management Coordinator has been in contact with the facilities to confirm that they have the necessary equipment to ensure the safety of the patients and staff. The newly established committee will take this a step further in ensuring that all facilities are following CMS guidelines which include proper symptom screening and PPE for all employees in the facilities. Borough Attorney John McCann will act as the legal advisor to the committee and assist in drafting reports to make recommendations to the facilities and the borough. The steps taken by Emerson can be used as a model throughout New Jersey. “Through the power of subpoena, local governments have the right to ensure compliance of these facilities and ensure the safety of its patients and employees. Federal Officials have called for action, the Borough of Emerson is doing just that,” said McCann.

The Emerson Education Association (EEA), representing the school district’s teachers, secretaries, and building custodians, has been doing its part to help others. Alongside their teaching duties, teachers have been busy sewing, collecting personal protection equipment (PPE) for local hospitals, dropping off “secret” treats and drawings, and making sure that everyone is being well taken care of. In addition to those actions, the EEA has donated over $1,000 to provide meals for healthcare workers at Pascack Valley Hospital and to help fill the shelves at the Emerson Food Pantry.

DR. KAPLAN: How to stay healthy during lock down

Because many of my patients have fallen into the trap of eating comfort foods and watching Netflix, they have ended up gaining weight DR. ERIC KAPLAN, which I call the KAPLAN BRAIN & “The Corona BODY 15.” Instead of using this global disaster as an excuse to let your health deteriorate, use this time to really take control of your health and reduce stress levels. Although you will hear the news and the government reporting that our only way to get back to normal life is through pharmaceuticals, in my opinion your ultimate and best defense against coronavirus is to improve your health and strengthen your immune system. Because coronavirus mutates so easily, it will be very hard to find a safe and effective vaccine within the next year. That means you and your doctor have to come up with a good health plan because if you have not been exposed to this virus yet, once the stay at home orders are released, you will be shortly. This virus spreads quickly so the key is to be so healthy that there are no major consequences. Most healthy people do not even realize they have had the virus. The first step to health is to avoid eating sugar, grains, alcohol, and dairy products because they lead to cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity, and lung disease which all seem to make this Covid-19 virus more dangerous. Most of the fatalities in this pandemic have occurred in the people who have these chronic illnesses. Letʼs come up with a plan to

make your brain and body stronger so you can feel better, function better, and live better. One of the most helpful tips I can give you is to perform breathing exercises everyday to make sure your lungs get stronger and remain healthy. Challenge yourself and see how long you can hold your breath. Pretend to blow out the candles of a birthday cake. You might be thinking that there are a lot of candles to blow out, so take a breathing break if you need. When you do breathing exercises, remember to exhale twice as long as you inhale. If you can inhale for 8 seconds and exhale for 16 seconds, your lungs are doing really well. Also, remember to drink at least the amount of water that equals half your body weight in ounces and also drink water frequently. If you drink just a sip of water every 20 minutes that will help you stay healthy and help prevent Covid-19. You can also use a humidifier to add moisture to the air, as well as taking a steam or a hot shower everyday. In addition, drink hot water and hot teas, as well. Go outside in nature and get at least 20 minutes of sunlight everyday between 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. Everyday you should exercise at least 20 minutes combining weight resistance exercises as well as aerobic exercise. Find fun activities to do so it is not a chore but it something you look forward to doing. Meditation can also help reduce stress levels as well as help with depression and anxiety. Remember to continue with social distances and keep wearing masks in public places. Wash your hands frequently with soap and water and wash your phone with alcohol. Donʼt touch your face because that is how most people

have contracted the virus. Take off your clothes when entering the house from the outside, and especially take off your shoes. After returning, donʼt touch anyone or talk to anyone in the house until you have taken a shower. If you are in a high risk group such as the elderly, immunocompromised, diabetics, the obese, smokers, or people with lung or heart disease, stay at home and donʼt leave the house. If you need food or other essentials you can always get it delivered or a family member can always pick it up for you. In addition to staying at home yourself, do not accept any visitors and take extra precautions. Remember you are not stuck at home, you are safe at home. If you are at home and are in isolation, this can be very hard mentally and emotionally. Make sure you make phone calls to your friends and family members frequently. Check in on others that would appreciate hearing from you. Have Skype or Zoom video calls so you can see the facial expressions of the person on the other line which activates different parts of the brain than communicating over text messages. Give your spouse, children, parents, and siblings lots of compliments and be very helpful around the house. Clean up your closet, your car, and your mind. Take this time to reflect and be aware of the important things in life and stop sweating the small stuff. Write down what you appreciate in life and your goals in life. Have a family project where you make mind maps or vision boards. Start a journal and record your deepest thoughts and intuitions. Start practicing mindfulness and medita-

tion. If possible, spend lots of time in nature. Take off your shoes and stand on the earth. Dig your toes into the grass or dirt in a process called earthing or grounding. There are so many great online virtual classes that are free and fun that you can take, as well. Whether itʼs Yoga, TaiChi, Pilates, Meditation, Breathing, Mindfulness, Zumba, Dance, Weights, Aerobics, Rebounder, or Belly Dancing, you can find an activity that will get your heart beating, and help improve your cardiovascular health, in addition to your brain health. It is also a good idea to learn a new skill like gardening or sewing. Read some new books of different genres that you are not used to reading. Start becoming more artistic with poems or drawings. Listen to music or learn to play an instrument. Become more handy and paint a room or put up a shelf on the wall. Start taking lessons to learn a new language or to learn how to cook healthy meals. If you donʼt know how to do something, just google it or check YouTube. If you are able to leave your house and visit friends from a safe distance I think it is important to do, especially for children. We do not want our children to grow up living in fear of our neighbors, not socializing with classmates, not helping others, or being too scared to leave their house. This may be very traumatic for our young children unless we educate them properly. We do not want a generation of weak and scared people. We need strong, healthy, and happy children to create a better future. Also, do not fight about money in front of your children. Do not let them watch the news and do not watch the news yourself. It does not do your family any good to hear about every coronavirus death that occurs in every state or country. This pandemic may have detrimental repercussions that we are not fully aware of yet, so it is important to educate our children to love our neighbors, not live in fear, and appreciate our health and freedom. I also recommend in these troubling times to have more camaraderie and less hate. I noticed people getting very angry at protesters that want to go back to work so that they donʼt go bankrupt, lose their business or lose their house. I encourage you to have some empathy for people that need money just to feed their families. Some people want to be free to go to work and some people want to continue a lock-down. Not everyone has to agree, but donʼt be so hateful. If a protester gets Covid-19, they deserve medical care even if they broke the rules. Everyone deserves proper medical care, even criminals. Also, do not call the police if you see someone walking in a park alone. They are not hurting anyone and that might take the police away from a real criminal. This is not the time to point fingers, but it is the time to have compassion for others. Now more than ever, we desperately need more love and less hate.

Enjoy this time with your family. Don't be stressed by helping your children with their school work. Everyone is dealing with hard times right now so try and be a little more lenient when they act out. We need to reduce stress levels, not create more stress. Stress makes your immune system worse, so relax and have some fun. Let them sleep in once in a while, or stay up late to watch a movie with you. Let them create their own schedule some days. Teach them things in addition to school work, like how to cook and how to change a tire. Show them the proper way to do laundry and proper dinner etiquette. Teach your children how to file taxes, how to balance a checkbook, how to save money for an emergency, and how to not spend more money than they make. Teach them manners and why volunteering and charity are so important. Teach them about helping others, having empathy, equality for all, and how to love one another. Now is the time to teach your children the things that the schools might not stress too much. If they miss one assignment, I donʼt think you should be so hard on your child, or so hard on yourself. Everyone is doing a great job during these unprecedented times, so give yourself a pat on the back. Moreover, now we have an opportunity to start a new, fresh, clean, and healthier life then we lived before this all happened. 2020 is now going to be a turning point in humanity in regards to health and freedom. We can focus on testing and tracking this coronavirus and hope the government, pharmaceutical companies, and vaccines will save us from this one virus, or we can take responsibility for our own health, build our own immune systems, not be scared, and not have to depend on the government or pharmaceuticals to save us. The human body is amazing at healing and can handle a lot of adversity, including millions of bacteria and thousands of viruses that we are exposed to that the media never talks about. Although we have horrifically lost tens of thousands of lives, we have also seen hundreds of thousands of lives recovered without any major problems. Research out of California is finding that most people who get this virus have no symptoms and actually donʼt even know they have contracted it. The key is to focus on the susceptible communities and make sure they stay safe. There is a lot of hope for a better future. Take care of your body now, and your body will take care of you later. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. can result in serious injuries, utility disruption and costly repairs. In 2019, PSE&G responded to 890 excavating damages (746 gas, 144 electric). The best way to prevent excavating damage is to call 811 before beginning any digging project this spring and use caution around marked facilities. It is not only the safe, smart thing to do—it is the law. Prevention is key: Contractors, excavators and customers should always call 811 to request that utility lines be located and marked before digging, to avoid hitting underground pipelines, conduits, wires and cables. This service is free, and critical to avoid injuries and disruptions to vital utility services.

If there is excavation work occurring on your property, customers should always make sure that a contractor has called 811 before starting work. Every digging project, even a small project like planting a tree or building a deck with hand tools, requires a call to 811. What to do if you smell gas: Leave the building as quickly as possible and move 350 feet away from the structure. Take all others with you. If you smell gas outside, move well away from where you suspect the gas is leaking. Call PSE&G immediately at 1-800-880-PSEG (7734) and call 911. (Do NOT call from inside the building. April marks the start of National Safe Digging Month. PSE&G, New Jerseyʼs largest utility, urges contractors, excavators and customers to call 811 before digging to help prevent gas emergencies. When an individual calls 811 to request a utility markout, they must wait three business days for the utility companies to properly mark underground lines with paint and flags. The markout will then remain valid for 45 business days. “Underground gas lines are everywhere, even on private property, and many of the gas damages that PSE&G responds to on a regular basis are completely avoidable,” said Joe Forline, PSE&G vice president of gas operations. “When customers are hiring contractors for work that requires digging, such as fence and swimming pool installation, they should discuss the need to follow the law and call 811. Likewise, customers doing their own projects that require digging, like installing a new mailbox post or planting a tree, should also follow the same procedure.” Digging without knowledge of the location of underground utilities

Responding to an appeal by County Executive James Tedesco for donations of personal protective equipment (PPE), Hackensack Riverkeeper delivered 15 boxes of exam gloves to help support frontline healthcare workers in the battle against COVID-19. The gloves were purchased late last year and earmarked for the organizationʼs 2020 River Cleanup program but with their programming on hold due to the pandemic, the group decided to donate them to the people who need them the most—local healthcare professionals and first responders. “As much as we and our dedicated volunteers love our Cleanup program, none of us knows when weʼll be back on the job and back in the field,” says Captain Bill

Sheehan. “And so it seemed like a sin to have 1,500 exam gloves sitting in storage when they could instead be helping protect the people who truly need them.” Hackensack Riverkeeper strongly urges all its colleagues in conservation that conduct cleanups, environmental monitoring programs or any activity that involves using PPE to do the right thing, put those activities on hold, and donate all they can to aid the common fight against COVID-19. “We know itʼs not a big amount like the piles of gear weʼve all seen being donated by large companies and universities,” said Sheehan. “But for those close to our homes – and close to all our hearts – weʼre honored to help any way we can.” Those seeking additional information about Bergen County donations should send an email to:

PPEdonations@co.bergen.nj.us. “When I arrived at Paramus, there were two vehicles being unloaded ahead of me and two more pulled in behind me once it was my turn,” said Riverkeeperʼs

Program Director Hugh Carola, who delivered the gear. “Even though she wore a mask, there was no mistaking the smile of thanks from the staffer who logged in our donation.”

Council candidate’s take on budget

To the editor: This past week, members of the Hillsdale Borough Council, under the leadership of Council President Horvath, failed to pass a budget for the 2020 calendar year. This was the second such meeting, following the efforts of the Finance Committee to keep taxes level. What was clear from this meeting is that there was no effort by the Mayor, the Council President, or the newest member of counsel to confer beforehand that they were going to scuttle the budget, and leave the town in a position of not being able to pay its bills amidst a pandemic. With no backup in place, our town is stuck in the unfortunate position of being unable to purchase anything during a time of unprecedented crisis, and the Council has left the Borough Administrator in the unfortunate position of having to tell his employees not to issue purchase orders (that is, to not pay bills). The debate on council is concentrated around whether we should adopt a budget that results in a zero percent increase in municipal property taxes or if these cuts in local government should go even deeper. It is further understood that some of the cuts the Council President and Mayor support are deeply cutting or eliminating valuable town outreach resources such as the Local Assistance Board, which helps families in a time of crisis. While the Mayor and Council President have fixed

Club News?

incomes as retirees, they have callously turned their backs on those in need, at a time when the Council should be looking to also protect the townʼs most vulnerable. Frankly, we need a more balanced point of view representing the interests of the people in Hillsdale. Why are we bending over backwards to save each household an insignificant amount of around $40/year when that money, or any additional cost-savings to be had could be redirected to continue programs that help our community? The Helping Hands Food Pantry, for instance, serves more than 1,200 seniors, disabled, active military and military veterans in town. The vast majority of citizens in this town are good, kind, and charitable. How the leadership of Hillsdale fails to reflect their constituents in a time of crisis defines how they want the world to perceive us. We need leadership that supports the community and reflects its values. It is clear that the Mayor, Mr. Horvath and their team refuse to support their fellow Council members and the town. Their childish infighting is contrary to the best interests of everyone in this Borough. We need leadership that can work with each other, and also support each other through organizations like the Local Assistance Board. Positive leadership should inspire the voters. Hillsdale deserves better leadership to focus on whatʼs truly important…the health and safety of our friends and family. Chris Camp Democratic Candidate for Council Hillsdale

People step up when the politicians don’t

To the editor: Politicians always seek bailouts after the fact to problems, which in part are of their own making. They offer rhetoric, incapable of looking inward, to analyze, or prepare with real solutions. Yet, they expect their constituents to have patience and find solutions to their own challenges while funding a government stumbling to fulfill its obligations. Families sheltering in place are forced to cut their discretionary spending. State and local governments wonʼt cut spending, canʼt disenfranchise special interests; want taxpayer rescue. This pandemic is a tragedy; it started in China and was complicated by WHOʼs inability to gather timely data for governments to react appropriately. But our state governments failed too; disregarding the

need for preparations after our three most recent pandemics—the 1957 H2N2 virus (116,000 dead), 1968 H3N2 virus (100,000 dead), and 2009 H1N1 swine flu. In 2003 we were first exposed to SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome), a coronavirus, and now COVID 19, a coronavirus derivative. Politicians saw facts, see historical patterns but still fail to prepare. Their forte is pointing fingers elsewhere, not themselves. Ultimately itʼs residents and neighbors who step up, working together, when and where needed in difficult times. While this challenge will pass, it would be nice if we could find engaged politicians who show a capacity to find solutions, work together, skip the rhetoric and do their jobs; making the necessary decisions to form a more perfect union, that promotes the general welfare, and actually secures the blessings of liberty and posterity. It will be interesting to see which municipal governing bodies consider the projected shortfalls in tax and miscellaneous revenues; and cut spending, freeze hiring and delay non-infrastructure related borrowing. No one expects their local government to perform miracles, but restraint and responsible consideration of taxpayers in a financially challenged period is appreciated. Thomas Wanner Westwood The writer is a former mayor of Westwood.

Grateful for an act of kindness

To the editor: A few weeks ago I was in line at Trader Joeʼs waiting for them to open. It was a cold morning, and I was huddled against the building trying to keep out of the wind. A lovely

young lady was behind me in line and must have noticed that I was cold. She got my attention and offered to save my place if I wanted to wait in my car. Needless to say, I did not take her up on her kind offer, but I thanked her and told her how grateful I was. It was a lovely gesture in a time of such distress. Nina Owens Westwood

Sander HERRING

Sander Herring, 87, a resident of Hillsdale, formerly of the Township of Washington for 45 years, passed away on March 26, 2020. Born Jan. 5, 1933 in the Bronx, N.Y., he was the son of the late Bert and Florence Herring. Sandy was an Army Veteran serving in the mid 1950s. Following his service, he attended NYU where he earned his MBA. He worked as the Medical Administrator at Roxbury Medical Group in Succasunna for 20 years. He later went on and successfully completed a multitude of tests which led him into his second career as a CFP (Certified Financial Planner). Sandy found fulfillment and enjoyed helping others achieve financial stability. He quickly grew his clientele and made many lifelong relationships along the way. Sandy was also a member of the Masonry Lodge. As a young boy, teenager and adult, Sandy was an avid baseball fan. He was a loyal Detroit Tigers fan cheering and rooting them on for over 60 years! He also coached his two sons in little league for many years. A quiet, very generous and loving man, his family was his pride and joy. Once retired, he enjoyed spending his winter retreats in Sarasota, Fla., with his wife, Carol, his children, and grandchildren. He loved early morning walks on the beach and feeding the birds with his grandkids. Sandy is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Carol; two sons and one daughter, Gary (Gina) Herring, Old Tappan; Nancy (Dan) Relin, Lititz, PA; Scott (Danielle) Herring, Tuxedo Park, NY; and five grandchildren: Jessica Herring, Michelle Relin, Jamie Relin, Josh Relin, and Noah Herring.

John was a faithful member of his church and was an active member of the Holy Name Society. He was an usher and served Our Lord in many other ministries. John is predeceased by his son John and his daughter Kathryn. He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Kathleen, his children James (Lynn), Michael (Ann), Margaret, Joseph (Kathy), Edmond, William, Robert (Ruth) and daughter in law Donna. Grandchildren John, Ken, Michael, Taylor, Tim, and Daniel, and many nieces and nephews.

She always said these were the best years to teach in Garfield—the faculty and students were exceptional, and where lifelong friends were made. Marge spent many years skiing, swimming and playing tennis and always loved participating in the sport more than spectating. Marge is survived by her loving husband Duane (of nearly 60 years); two sons, Duane and wife Mary Kasica and Douglas and wife Halina Kasica; brother Leonard Melissant and wife Sophie; in addition to six grandchildren, Kirsten Perliski and husband Brian of Chicago, Ryan, Shawn, Kylie Moore and her husband Jonathan of Chattanooga, Mikayla, Nikolas and greatgrandson Owen Perliski. Neil A. ARMENTANO

Neil Anthony Armentano, of the Township of Washington, passed away peacefully on April 7, 2020 at the ripe old age of 92. He was born on July 26, 1927 in Hazelton, PA, a coal mining town, to Joseph and Mary Armentano, the ninth of ten children. His family left Pennsylvania at the height of the Great Depression and settled in Mount Vernon, NY. Neil was predeceased by all but one of his siblings, Betty Luma, who is 101 years old and resides in Mission Viejo, CA. Neil lived a full life and nothing filled his heart more than his family. Neil is survived by his devoted wife, Sera and three children: Maria Louise Calamari and husband Peter of the Township of Washington, Joseph Neil Armentano and wife Francine of Dumont, and Josephʼs twin sister, Jeanette Francis Armentano of Portland, Oregon. In addition, Neil is survived by his beloved grandchildren, Michele Maria Calamari Van Kalsbeck of Lincoln Park, NJ (husband Kyle Van Kalsbeck); Christopher Joseph Armentano of Dumont; and Coleen Ann Calamari of New York City. A memorial service for family and friends will be held in the future. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Nutley Family Service Bureau, a non-profit food pantry, community mental health and social service agency in Nutley. (nutleyfamily.org/donate); Dementia Society of America (dementiasociety.org); or The Reevaluation Foundation in Seattle, Washington (www.rc.org/publication/foundation/contents).

Jeannette A. COMMERFORD

Jeannette Angela Commerford (nee Malcuit), age 93, of the Township of Washington, passed away on April 11, 2020. She was preceded in death by her husband Edward Bradley (Brad) Commerford and her brother John Malcuit. She is survived by her daughter Denise, son Brad, and son John, his wife Lorraine, and her 10 grandchildren and four greatgrandchildren in addition to her loving sister-in-law, nieces, nephews, extended family members and a host of long-time friends. She was a diehard Yankee fan and an avid bird watcher. She knew every bird, chipmunk and squirrel that visited her feeder and often spoke about their antics just outside her window. Mom endured many years of health issues that ultimately brought her to the Atrium in Park Ridge as a resident. She appreciated all the love and support from family and friends who visited her or called her to let her know she was an important part of their lives. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Hope and Heroes Childrenʼs Cancer Fund, hopeandheroes.org.

Diane K. HAREN

It is with great sadness that the family of Diane K. Haren announces her passing on April 8, 2020 at age 89. Diane was born on March 9, 1931 to Mildred and George Lindsay in Auburn, Maine. She graduated from Edward Little High School in 1949 and from Bates College in 1953, where she majored in sociology. She moved to New York City after graduation and worked in Social Services. She met Martin, a handsome WW2 veteran, at an Officers Club in Queens and married him in 1954 after a whirlwind courtship. Diane and Martin lived in Montvale for most of their married life. They forged lifelong friendships on Madison Avenue. Diane was a good neighbor, quietly lending a hand to whomever needed it. She helped start the first Meals on Wheels program in the Pascack Valley. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, and antiquing. She never drew attention to herself but was known for her sense of style and eye for color and design. She worked at the Woodcliff Lake Manor Nursing Home in administration from 1972 to 1978 and then worked alongside her husband Martin in his real estate business. She was an avid reader with a curious mind. She raised her daughters to be independent and instilled in them the belief they could succeed in anything to which they set their minds. Diane moved to Sunrise Assisted Living in Woodcliff Lake a year after her husbandʼs death. She enjoyed being part of that community. Diane is survived by her daughters Kimberly Haren, Noreen Haren and husband Bruce Peterson, Gretta Haren and husband Billy Gravius, and her granddaughter Gillian Zhen Le Gravius. Diane was predeceased by her husband Martin in 2014. In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Jude Childrenʼs Research Hospital or The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinsonʼs Research would be greatly appreciated. A memorial mass and celebration of Dianeʼs life will take place as soon as we are free to gather.
