Montgomery Wins Award for Combating Obesity Montgomery Mayor Todd Strange

Once again, our great city is receiving a prestigious award. For six decades the National Civic League has presented All-America City Awards to communities that collaboratively tackle challenges and achieve results. The honor is often referred to as the Nobel Prize for civic involvement. In June, Montgomery was among the newest cities to receive this award. This year's inductees were required to spotlight three community projects that identified a problem, formed a coalition and developed a solution. At least one of the projects had to address a health-related concern. All three had to show concrete results. We decided all of Montgomery's programs should deal with health. The River Region Obesity Task Force was created after a national survey showed the Montgomery metro area was tied for the highest obesity rate in the country. E.A.T. South is using urban farms to introduce citizens across Central Alabama to great tasting, locally grown food that is healthy. The River Region Health Center was built when local leaders and the community teamed up to improve health care for un-insured and under-insured patients. It's a top-notch facility that attracts people with full coverage too. As soon as Montgomery was selected to be a finalist (along with 24 other communities), a group of two dozen people began rehearsing the 10-minute presentation that would be performed for a special panel of judges with civic expertise. Our group was made up of individuals connected to the three projects, including some superb students from Wares Ferry Road and E.D. Nixon Elementary Schools. The judges and other attendees at the competition were impressed with Montgomery's stories of success. Hopefully, this honor will remind us there are extraordinary things happening in our city every day and inspire more of us to engage in uplifting community projects that make us the Capital of Dreams. -Mayor Todd Strange 4

Reginald Miller, the proprietor of Golden Shears has been in business since 1997. In his youth, he was very fascinated by the different hair styles of both men and women. So eventually, he attended Cosmetology School which he received his barbering and salon licenses. He never in million years imagined himself where he is now, but with the support of his wife, Kenyetta Miller, he was able to take his talents to the next level. Golden Shears is a very unique and one of a kind shop; there are various forms of entertainment for its customers while they wait such as a pool table, flat screen tv, wifi, and a cigar lounge which is well ventilated. But it doesn't end there, the services for its customers are impeccable. Not only do they cut and maintain hair styles, but they offer several other grooming services. Both men and women can get manicures, pedicures, facials, and even scalp treatment. Also, while its customers wait, they use a paging system to alert them when it's their turn. Even though Reginald has a great establishment already, his ambitions won't allow him to stop there. Currently, he is in the works of designing a shaving system for men which will allow them to get a close-shave and condition their skin as well.

Montgomery is home to many statues and monuments, but one of the oldest is the statue of General Robert E. Lee. The statue which stands in front of Lee High School has not always stood in that location and has an interesting history. In fact, the statue was used as part of a building development named Lee Place, located in Capital Heights and was in the middle of a roundabou before the streets were eventually straightened and the roundabout taken out along with the statue. In the early 1900s, Capital Heights was a growing area with many new developments. Lee Place was one of the developments and hailed as one of the finest developments in the South. The center of the development was the statue of General Lee. The statue, which measures seven feet, was brought in and placed on a 20-foot pedestal, and placed at Winona and Vickers (later renamed Madison Terrace) streets. The height of the statue made it very visible. The dedication service was held on June 12, 1908 and the statue was given to the city. The dedication service was very elaborate and included a representative from all 13 Confederate States. Eventually, Winona and Madison Terrace were straightened and the roundabout, along

with the statue, removed. The city placed the statue at the intersection of Mt. Meigs and Madison Avenue, where it remained for many years, still on the very large pedestal. Lee High School was opened in 1955 and suggestions were made that the statue of General Lee should be placed in front of the school. The senior class of 1960 decided to make this their class project. The Mayor was willing for the statue to be placed in front of the school; however, the stipulation was the school must pay for the move. The class of 1960 sold many boxes of candy to raise the necessary funds. Once again, the statue was moved and placed on a smaller base in front of Lee High School, where it was inscribed with the name of the General. At the time the statue was moved to the school, there was much discussion as to which direction the statue should face. Some believed it should face Ann Street and believed it would look strange if it didn’t. The opposing side argued the statue had always faced north and should continue to do so because General Lee would never turn his back on “the enemy”. This argument won and is the reason why the profile of General Lee is seen from Ann Street as opposed to his face.

Oh, Freedom . . . I don’t know what I’m most thankful for when it comes to summer, but here are a few things I surely do enjoy: Sitting on my back patio just listening to the sounds of summer sipping some delicious sweet tea (while swatting mosquitos and fanning away other insects). Spending long weekends with my family, friends, and loved ones (without having to worry about getting the children back to school on Monday). Carving out a weekend to go to the beach and smell the clean ocean air while feeling the sand between my toes (making sure to stop at shopping outlets along the way). Having the time to read a good book, work on my next novel, and sleep in sometimes (when I’m not heading home to Mississippi or to the beach). You can probably create a list of your own (including sidebars in parentheses). But there’s also something else we should all be thankful for: our freedom. The 4th of July is when we celebrate America’s liberation from oppressive control from the English monarchy. It is a day when we don our red, white, and blue t-shirts to show how much we appreciate the sacrifices that were and are still being made to secure our freedom. And yes, it is the day that we set aside to spend time with those closest to us just enjoying each other’s company, grilling and eating our favorite foods, and reminiscing about the “good ole days.” But we must always keep at the forefront that these things we enjoy, this freedom, was bought and paid for not only by ancestors, elders, and fellow countrymen & women who serve in the various military branches, but also by the Great Freedom Giver. Yes, in all of our celebrating, remembering, and saying thanks, we must never forget that God is the true author of freedom. The Bible lets us know that “whom the Son sets free is free indeed” (John 8:36 KJV). Another translation says it this way: so if the Son sets you free, you are truly free (New Living). My dear friends, thankfully there are many protocols in place to insure our physical freedom. Military protection. Police protection. The right to vote. Obeying the laws of the land. But the only way we can be SPIRITUALLY free is to be connected to The One who freely gave His all for us: For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, and whoever believes in Him will not perish but will have everlasting life (John 3:16). Enjoy your summer, your Independence Day, and take a minute to ask yourself: Am I free?

Making Music in Montgomery The third weekend in May saw the return of the River Jam Music Festival to downtown Montgomery and the Riverfront. The event, in its second year, was free to the public due to the collaborative efforts of the City of Montgomery Special Events Department, the Alabama Roots Music Society and this year’s Presenting Sponsor, Wind Creek Hospitality. The fun kicked off Friday evening under the Historic Union Station Train Shed with featured local artists Brandon Self and the Outlaw Revival, Souled Out and Wishbone performing on the Bama Budweiser Stage. This year’s event was restructured as a two day event with the festivities moving to the Riverwalk Amphitheater’s Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Stage on Saturday evening where the crowd of fans welcomed Bluesman A. J Ghent, the country/ rock of Rosco Bandana, jazz saxophonist Reggie Hines and the incomparable Chuck Leavell, formerly a member of the Allman Brothers Band and current touring and recording member of The Rolling Stones. The festivities were concluded with a great display of fireworks over the Alabama River. Other sponsors helping to keep the great live music free at The River Jam Music Festival included PNC Bank, OneMain Financial, and Capitol Hyundai. Last week I was talking to a friend who just had a baby boy. She was holding him cradled next to her with his head leaning on her shoulder. He clumsily rolled his head towards me, looked through me as if I weren’t there and smiled a big toothless drooling smile. I think every heart within a 2 mile radius melted right at that moment. It was fun talking with her from the time she told me she was pregnant and watching her change and grow, finally culminating to this moment, holding a new human being in her arms. Pregnancy is magic. Being a family dentist, I get many questions from excited mothers to be. There are a few things about your dental health that you should be aware of when you’re chewing for two. Have you ever wondered why you have cravings for foods you’ve never liked before and can’t stand certain foods you’ve always enjoyed before? How about when you wake up in the morning and your mouth tastes like you’ve been sucking on pocket change all through the night? Well here’s the answer: We don’t know. But some researchers think that the reason might be because of the changes in hormones and water retention which affects all the cells in your body including your taste buds. Some believe that there is a biological/evolutionary element for the metal taste that makes you crave certain minerals that you may need such as calcium and sodium. But the bottom line is we still aren’t sure. But we gave it a name. It’s called “Disguesia”. Stupid name right? As your baby develops inside you, his or her teeth are actually starting to form around the 3rd to 6th months of your pregnancy. Making sure you’re getting plenty of calcium as well as vitamin A, D, C, phosphorous and protein in a well balanced diet will give the little tiger plenty of Dr. Frank K. Rho received his Doctorate of Dental Surgery from Loma Linda University in 1997. He has worked with numerous dentists and specialists and has lectured in communities on the subject of dental care throughout the United States. He is an active member of a number of organizations composed of dentists who keep abreast of the latest trends and techniques in dentistry. This can give you an increased risk of gum disease even following a regular regimen of brushing and flossing. Higher levels of progesterone can cause an exaggerated response to plaque bacteria especially in the second and third trimester This is easy to avoid by stepping up your home care and making sure you see your dentist on a regular basis. Also if you have a few minor issues in your teeth, your dentist may want to postpone any dental treatment until after your first trimester. However, if you are having a dental emergency, infections can be harmful to you and your baby. Make sure you tell your dentist that you are pregnant. So congratulations! Remember to see your dentist regularly and if you’d like my humble advice on a name for your baby. I think Frank is a fantastic name…

Developing emotional intelligence

Emotional intelligence or Emotional Quotient is incredibly important for our success, or our childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s success. Why? If we are afraid to learn something new, we are no longer in the race. If our children afraid to learn, our children are no more in the running. Most of us do not try new things because we are afraid of looking bad or embarrassed by our actions or the outcome then is the world only for the brave? Bravery is an emotion. I have personally noticed many adults, students and children who are incredibly smart, but continue to stay in their current predicament because they are held back by their emotions. Therefore, developing emotional intelligence is a virtue, even a necessity for the future, or for our own liberation.

Well, how do we develop emotional intelligence? We have to first identify emotions. On a regular basis, stop and do something I called a â&#x20AC;&#x153;feelings check.â&#x20AC;? Scan your emotions like an inventory on a regular basis. Notice what you are feeling, and then you can decide to act on the emotions. But at least know what you are feeling, so you can therefore be in a position to decide to act. Being in a position to act is crucial. Many of us make the mistake of acting on our emotions, because they are not even aware of what they are feeling. And often end up in a complicated place, i.e. having to apologize or find another job. Three Tips to Shake the Fear Hangover by Tasha Scott Entrepreneur | Author | Speaker | Life Coach What is THE dream in your heart that you’ve been longing to come to pass? How many times have you picked it up, looked at it, and contemplated it only to put it back on the shelf and say, “One day.” My friend, are you comfortable living with that gnawing dissatisfaction that says, if I don’t accomplish this dream, I feel like a part of me will always be missing…dare I say, dying? I think it’s time that we got out of our own way - for good, this time. Let’s muster up all the courage we can. Take that dream off the shelf. Brush away the dust and cobwebs. And this time, as insurance, we’ll burn the shelf so we can’t go back! Come on! Let’s move forward together…fear and all! “But,” you ask, “How in the world can anyone ever be comfortable with that strange feeling of fear or nursing a fear hangover? ” Here’s the key: You just have to keep going and eventually the fear turns into strength. It turns into an inner confidence that is no longer a stumbling block but a stepping stool. Did you just have an Aha! moment? Three tips to shake the fear hangover and seal the deal: Write your vision down on paper; find a mentor or a coach who can serve as an accountability partner to help you in your beginning steps toward your dreams; make the first step (small steps count).

Fun with Shrinky- Dinks! by Kasey Hope Our art students love this project and we sure you will too! When studying Dale Chihuly we look at his cool glass sculptures and then make our own version . All you need is 1) clear shrinky dink film 2) colored sharpies and 3) a heat gun. Cut out a piece of the shrinky dink film , color with markers, and then let an adult use the heat gun on the shrinky dink. It's like magic in front of your eyes as the plastic takes on a new form! You can even punch a hole in it before adding the heat and then you can wear it as a necklace. P'zazz students think it makes quite a fashion statement! Kasey Hope is an Auburn University graduate and the owner of P'zazz Art Studio in Prattville, where she has been teaching art lessons to adults and children for 5 years.

Dogs and cats are born with instinctive behaviors that can drive pet owners crazy. Whether it’s scratching the new leather sofa or digging in the newly planted flower garden, some pet behaviors can send pet owners over the edge. The good news is that with a little patience, some clever interventions, and positive reinforcements, bad habits can be tamed.

If your dog is turning your yard into a moonscape, understand he/she isn’t doing this to make you angry. Determining the underlying reason for the behavior is the first step to finding a solution.

Felines are equipped with a nasty set of talons that they’re always eager to whip out when the moment calls. Putting claws to use is natural for cats…but extremely frustration for cat owners. Lesson #1 Keep the claws under control by trimming them often. Blunt nails leave less damage than sharper nails. Trimming their nails every two-three weeks will help. Older cats may not be too happy about the new routine; so trimming during a feeding session may help. Lesson #2 Provide your scratch-happy kitty with a decent scratching post. Pick one that is at least threefeet high and covered in rope or fabric. Lesson #3 If frustration is getting the best of you, discuss surgical alternatives with your veterinarian. Many people are hesitant about declawing, but the unfortunate truth is thousands of cats are surrendered to shelters each year because of the destructive clawing.

Did You Pee on My Rug? Inappropriate elimination can stem from many problems ranging from an actual illness to an anxiety disorder. Lesson #1 Don’t scold or punish your pet until you first rule out a medical problem. If your house-trained pet starts having accidents call your veterinarian.

Lesson #3 Whether it’s a medical or environmental cause, be consistent with your veterinarian’s recommendations.

Stop Digging Up My Yard!

Lesson #1 Is your pet seeking entertainment? Bored dogs will find entertaining activities to offset boredom. Unfortunately, their destruction can be expensive. Provide plenty of activity for your dog. If you cannot walk your dog at least twice daily consider enrolling him in a doggie day care program that provides safe stimulating activities. Also, providing him with a variety of safe toys can help. Lesson #2 Is your dog seeking comfort or protection from the heat? Dogs will dig in search of a cool spot. Try offering your dog a cool place to stay during the heat of the summer. Also providing a kid pool filled with water gives your pet a place to cool off. Lesson #3 Make sure your dog is spayed or neutered. An unaltered animal will go to great lengths to breed. This includes digging out of the fenced yard. Unwanted pet behavior can be frustrating for pet owners. But there is always a solution if you are willing to discuss behavior problems with your veterinarian and follow their professional guidelines.

Lesson #2 Have you had environmental changes? Often a new baby, pet, or spouse can cause anxiety or tension. Relocating can also cause changes in bathroom habits. If you think an environmental change is the culprit, crate training may be necessary. Make sure you take the time to praise your pet when proper elimination does

8th Annual A.W. Watkins Golf Tournament by Jessie Cocking

The Rev. Dr. A.W. Watkins Foundation, a non-profit organization, was established in December 2003 with the mission of providing financial aid to graduating high school seniors living in Central Alabama. The foundation is named in honor of Rev. Dr. A. W. Watkins, Jr., who was a pastor in Montgomery, Alabama for over 45 years until his death in November 2003. He was the pastor of three churches simultaneously, Mobile Heights Baptist, Daniel Baptist and Helicon Missionary Baptist. In 1987 Selma University presented him with an honorary degree for his faithful service as a board member. Reverend Watkins was a strong Advocate for higher education and he emphasized that throughout his ministry. Each May the Rev. Dr. A.W. Watkins Foundation holds a fundraiser in the form of a golf tournament. The foundation relies upon donations and fundraisers throughout the year to provide the much needed financial assistance to deserving students. The first scholarships were given in 2005 and since then the foundation has awarded 69 scholarships totaling $70,305. This year, which is the foundations 8th year, 13 scholarships were awarded totaling $13,000. In addition to providing financial assistance to graduating high school seniors, the foundation also provides assistance to juniors and seniors enrolled in the Bible and Pastoral Ministry and Selma University in Selma, Alabama.

Sunshine, the Cool Waters of the Alabama River, Live Music and Cold Beer. On Saturday May 17th these elements all came together to create this year’s Second Annual Riverbend Brewfest at Montgomery’s Riverfront Park. Beverage distributors from throughout Alabama arrived bringing a great variety of local regional and nationally recognized hand-craft brews to over 1,000 river region beer enthusiasts. There was also a great representation of Alabama’s own expansive craft beer industry with representatives and brewers from the Blue Pants, Black Warrior, Yellowhammer, Good People, Rocket Republic and Montgomery’s own Railyard Brewing Company. With over twenty tasting locations along Montgomery’s Riverwalk, those attending the event had plenty of opportunities to sample some of their favorite seasonal brews, new brews entering the market and a few special brews created for the Riverbend Brewfest. Live music for the event was provided by local favorite Mac Cone and Bluesman A. J. Ghent. Thanks to the efforts of Col. Al Hunt and the Air War College Volunteer Corps., the brews stayed cold and flowed smoothly throughout the event into special commemorative tasting glasses provided by Dreamland Barbeque and Railyard Brewing. As the Riverbend Brewfest ended attendees kept the fun going by taking the Brews Cruise aboard the Harriott II or taking a short stroll to the Riverwalk Amphitheater where the second day of the River Jam Music Festival was getting under way.

When it comes to teen driving, parents play a key role in improving safety. That’s the idea behind the “5 to Drive” initiative — a campaign from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that encourages parents to start conversations about safe driving by: • Discussing five critical driving practices with teens • Reinforcing those habits as teens get comfortable behind the wheel • Setting an example by being good role models

Establish an open dialogue with your teen driver today by discussing the safety topics outlined by “5 to Drive”: 1. Talking and Texting The numbers say it all: Dialing a phone while driving increases your risk of crashing by three times; texting while driving increases it by 2 times. For more proof, visit distraction.gov to read stats and stories of those affected. 2. Extra Passengers Cell phones aren’t the only behind-the-wheel distraction — friends can unknowingly do more harm than good. According to NHTSA, teen drivers are three times more likely to engage in risky behaviors while riding with multiple passengers. If applicable, share your state’s graduated driver licensing program passenger restrictions with your teen. And don’t be afraid to enforce your own rules regarding extra riders. 3. Speeding Speeding has pricey consequences, from a ticket to a crash. In fact, speeding was a factor in 35 46

percent of fatal crashes involving teen drivers in 2011, according to the NHTSA. 4. Drinking and Driving Teens are more likely to die in an alcohol-related crash than anyone else. Blessings to Give and Receive By Minnie Lamberth Donnie Sasser is that kind of Facebook friend who can post anything that comes to mind and get 23 likes in 60 seconds. His witticisms are legend. During Auburn’s heart-stopping performance in the BCS national championship game, he updated, “I’m passing out nitro pills like skittles on Halloween.” On Christmas Eve, he offered help, “I will be selling batteries, duct tape, extra parts and pieces at the corner of Vaughn and Taylor from 11pm until 2am.” In January, he observed, “School Holiday – That’s French for ‘Eat at Chappy’s.’” Donnie’s entertaining Facebook persona gets noticed. “I’ve made a lot of friends on Facebook,” he said. “I use it as a tool for humor and honesty. I don’t get serious or political. A good bit of the time, it’s just making fun of myself.” Donnie added, “I think that it catches people off guard because I’m so quiet in person. Summertime is here, which means its hot!!!! Here are some fun and fresh tips to make your makeup

routine easier and help prevent your makeup from running off: Try a tinted moisturizer instead of your normal foundation, a tinted moisturizer has a much lighter wear, but still has coverage. You don't have to apply as much as you would with a foundation. Smashbox BB cream with SPF 35 is a great alternative to your foundation. They also have bob cream for eyes which is a concealer with SPF of 15. Also try tinted sunblocks as well. Skin within sun Protect&repair is a great tinted sunblock. It's non greasy, absorbs in the skin and has SPF of 40+. Follow up with a light translucent powder. Brighten out your eyeshadows using less; applying gold shimmer on your lids can definitely make your eyes pop. A great tip is to dab a little of it on the inner part of your eye and sweep across. Great look at the beach! Switch out thick lipsticks. Since heavy lip colors often feel like overkill once the weather warms up, try a tinted lip balm. They give you whisper-light color, and many even have SPF. Try out different bronzes or face accents. A great face accent is Gleam or Luster by Glo Minerals, it has a touch of pink along with bronzers mixed together. Sweep across your cheeks, then sweep down your neck across your dĂŠcolletage. This gives a glow to the skin. Stop shine in its tracks. Nothing beats blotting papers. "They're cheap, easy, and amazing!" Refresh your body in no time! When a cool shower isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t an option, run your hands under cold water, then place your wrists on the back of your neck; this should soothe your skin before you begin to sweat. Tube your lashes not paint them! There is a difference! Blinc mascara is a great one to wear for sweating or water activities, it goes on wet and dries on each lash follicle in tiny tubes. You can rub, swim, sweat and it doesn't run, clump or flake. Remember, when you remove it with eye makeup remover or mild cleanser it slides off like tiny tubes( no its not your lashes coming out); it's great for contact lens wearers! 919 Felder Avenue; 334-264-4222 The Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald Museum of Montgomery, AL will host a dedication of it's new "Zelda Gallery," which will make it the first and only permanent gallery completely dedicated to Zelda's artwork. Zelda Sayre Fitzgerald, the daughter of Alabama Supreme Court Justice and Montgomery native Anthony Dickinson Sayre, began painting in the mid-1920s while she was in her mid twenties and she continued painting until her untimely death in 1948. Although it has been estimated that she painted hundreds of paintings, many of them were lost or destroyed. Today, just over a hundred of her paintings remain in circulation. The Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald Museum boasts a collection of ten originals by Zelda, and thanks to Shawn Sudia-Skeehan of Atlanta, Georgia, has increased its collection with the addition of surrogate gouaches and giclèes purchased and framed to museum standards. The dedication of the gallery, which is being executed in the name of Ms. SudiaSkeehan, will take place at the Fitzgerald Museum (919 Felder Avenue, Montgomery, AL 36106) beginning at 12:00pm. There will be a reception in honor of Zelda's 114th birthday at the museum following the event.
