Connecting You To The Capital City
A Word from Our Mayor
Montgomery Mayor Todd Strange
Montgomery Recognized as a Shining Star in the South
As residents of Montgomery, we already know the Capital of Dreams is a special place. Our home is full of beauty, history and excitement. Now, the secret's out: Montgomery is nationally recognized as one of the premiere destinations in the United States. Most recently, the National Civic League selected Montgomery as one of 25 finalists for the All-America City Award. This recent acclaim can be attributed to our outstanding civic accomplishments and initiatives, like the River Region Health Clinic, E.A.T. South, the River Region Obesity Task Force and revitalization across the city. Additionally, we've been recognized by USAToday Travel as one of the Best Historic Cities in the country. Our progress in tourism recently led Convention Magazine to dub Montgomery as, "a city to watch." From 2013 to 2014, Montgomery's hotel occupancy rate increased by 12.4 percent and room demand increased by 14.6 percent. Other Alabama cities have smaller growth or have seen their rates decline. We're also outperforming such peer cities as Greenville (South Carolina), Little Rock and Chattanooga; and quickly becoming a go-to destination for conferences and conventions. The quality of education offered by our schools is another source of pride. L.A.M.P. High School was recently ranked the #1 magnet school in the country, while Brewbaker Technology and Booker T. Washington Magnet High Schools were included in the top five percent of schools in the nation. The educational opportunities for Montgomery's children, coupled with the city's revitalization have helped attract new businesses and spurred job-growth. In January, Southern Business & Development said Montgomery was one of the "top ten shining examples of economic development working in the South." Our non-farms job growth increased by 1,600 jobs from 2012 to 2013. This is only the beginning. Every day, the chamber, in partnership with the city, the county and the state, is searching for new companies to come here with good-paying jobs. As word spreads about all our city has to offer, we'll continue building, cultivating and creating our dream for Montgomery. Several projects underway will continue advancing our vision for the city, including the Camellia Bowl, the Market District development and the rejuvenation of West Fairview Avenue. Join us, and help spread the word. Invite your friends, family and in-laws to visit Montgomery and experience the excitement, and tell them to book a hotel room early because they're filling up fast. Filet & Vine Market, Deli and Bottleshoppe is a unique place to shop in Old Cloverdale. The business is the brainchild of partners Derk Lyerly and Jud Blount, who first opened the doors in March of 1998. Long-time friend Jud recognized that Derk’s idea for Filet & Vine could fill a niche in Montgomery’s food service market and proposed a partnership that would turn the one-stop shop idea into a reality. Over the past sixteen years, they have expanded twice. Filet & Vine now occupies over 6,500 square feet and offers seating for 140 people. Derk grew up working with German chefs preparing beef and went on to work in the beef department of Winn Dixie for 20 years. When asked the inspiration behind opening Filet and Vine, he responded, “My passion and love for beef and steaks.” His vision was to open a facility that not only provided the best cuts of beef available, but also a deli featuring gourmet sandwiches, soup and salad bar, grocery store, meals to go and catering for all events. In addition to their gourmet food selections, Filet & Vine contains a Bottleshoppe featuring central Alabama's largest selection of wine and beer. With over 10,000 bottles of wine and 150 types of beers, rest assured if they don't have it, they can order it!

Lucas Tavern, located in Old Alabama Town, is the oldest known structure in Montgomery. The building can be traced to 1818, if not earlier. The tavern originally stood in Waugh on the Old Federal Road, which brought travelers and settlers into central Alabama and beyond. The building was constructed on the border of the Alabama territory and the Creek Indian territory and was the first place travelers would have come to after passing through the Indian’s. Back in those days, a tavern was a place where one could eat, sleep in a real bed (even if it was shared), feed and rest your animals and take a bath. The Federal Road was very inhospitable and the tavern would have been a welcomed site to weary travelers. The most famous owners of the tavern were Walter and Eliza Lucas. While they were not the original owners of the tavern, they made it the most prosperous. Mrs. Lucas was known for her cooking and hospitality. An Englishman traveling through the area around 1835 wrote down the menu offered by Mrs. Lucas. The food included “chicken pie, ham, five vegetables, pudding and sauce, sweet pies, preserved fruits, a dessert of strawberries and plums and

also owned a boat, which he would use to travel to Mobile to sell cotton and buy goods for the store and tavern. Mr. Lucas also suggested the name of “Montgomery” to Andrew Dexter when the new city was formed.
The Lucas’ eventually sold the tavern and other businesses and moved to Mississippi, where Mrs. Lucas died. Mr. Lucas remarried and had several other children. The tavern passed through several hands until it was purchased by Landmarks

the awesomeness of Spit
W
When I was a kid, it was cool to spit. We’d sit outside hocking loogies and have contests to see who could spit the farthest. We’d spit on trees, off buildings, on wounds and on each other. Sure that may be gross, but back off, man, we were kids. Now, decades later, I have tremendous respect for the stuff. Our bodies are a universe of intricate biochemical relationships and mind-bogglingly miraculous systems of sophisticated art. The more in depth we learn of it, the greater the awe. Take for example, your spit. Saliva is almost a hundred percent water. 99.5% water and 0.5% of everything else it contains. That 0.5% in human saliva is made up of a number of components that helps it perform a myriad of functions that are essential in your comfort, digestion and survival. Here’s just a few: Mucus. Mmmmm. What an unfortunate name. It just sounds slimy. But for us, that’s exactly what it needs to be. It helps lubricate our oral cavity, our respiratory and digestive system to protect it so that we don’t choke on our food or create injury from chewing, breathing, talking and swallowing. Do you like eating? Do you like breathing? Thank mucus. Speaking of eating, saliva also contains certain enzymes which help to digest simple carbohydrates and some of the fat that we eat. When you put a cracker in your mouth, chew it, swallow it and it reaches your stomach, it is already one third digested. Electrolytes in our saliva are essential in buffering our saliva to a consistent range of acidity so that it doesn’t dissolve our teeth. It also functions in breaking down chemicals into its components. The saliva carries the chemicals to our taste buds which read them and tell us how amazing that double chocolate cake tastes or to go ahead and spit out the pickled quail liver and fish head tartar you just tried. Saliva also contains specific immunoglobulins and other enzymes which have a huge role in controlling bacteria in our mouths. It bathes and washes away food particles in our teeth and helps to break down dental plaque. To top it all off, it even changes as you need it. Running a mile? It turns thicker to aid in respiration. sit down to a Thanksgiving feast? It turns more watery to help in eating and digestion. It’s pretty remarkable stuff, isn’t it? There are so many subtle but massively important things that are happening because of your saliva. It’s just another tiny piece of literally trillions of examples of the extraordinary miracle of you. So if you ever feel down about yourself. Consider your spit. You’re actually quite amazing.

What Your Eyes Reveal About Your Health
It's been said that the eyes are the window to the soul. While the saying has more of a spiritual context, it carries weight when your doctor looks into your eyes. The eye reflects what is happening in the body. In other words, eye problems are usually manifestations of systemic problems. Thanks to clues the eye provides, eye doctors can be the first ones to detect medical conditions and refer patients to specialists for further evaluation. This often leads to life-saving treatment. Eye doctors regularly alert patients to potentially dangerous auto-immune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, lupus and type I diabetes. Because the body's organs and systems are interconnected, eye problems can be the first sign of a vascular, nerve or immune problem. The pupil of the eye is an open window allowing a unique glimpse into the body. Blood vessels, nerves and tissue can be viewed directly through the pupil, with specialized instruments, to reveal remarkable data about the body. Swollen eye muscles and bulging eyes can be a sign of hyperthyroidism. Optic nerve inflammation in an otherwise healthy person can indicate multiple sclerosis. Retinal hemorrhages can signal a myriad of diseases, with diabetes being the most common. Diabetic eye disease is one of the leading causes of blindness and can be diagnosed and treated, as long as the patient is seen and returns for timely care.

The eyes can help predict risk of stroke, which is particularly important to people with heart disease and diabetes. This is because blood clots in the arteries of the head and neck that might lead to stroke are often visible as retinal emboli in the small blood vessels of the eye. The patient can then be seen by a vascular surgeon for appropriate treatment. Brain tumors are another serious disorder that can be found with an eye test called the visual field analysis, which is a ten-minute, non-invasive test. The bottom line is when something changes about your vision, it's best to get it checked to determine if any serious problem has caused the symptom. Children and adults should have their eyes examined at least every two years, and if they have health problems, they should have this check up annually. For answers about eye-related questions, call Dr. Fredrick Jackson at 334-271-3900. Primary Eyecare Associates is located at 8436 Vaughn Road in Montgomery.
Dr. Fredrick Jackson received his undergraduate degree from Huntingdon College, and earned his Doctor of Optometry degree from the University of AL-Birmingham 1984. When Mike Waites lost his Gulfport, MS store after Hurricane Katrina, he regrouped and said, "I can't give up and leave my patients. We have to find something positive out of this tragedy.” That moment encapsulates what is at the center of Waites' belief system: Focus on the positive. Waites has an ability to see possibilities where most people would give up. “That’s always been my thing, I can see the possible in people and situations where others can’t and because I can see it, I can help other people see it. I think my biggest strength is seeing positive potential in creating successful teams. I stick to things I'm good at and hire talented individuals for positions that fit their strengths. Like Angela Smyth, who has been my right hand for five years. Angela is awesome in areas of this business that I'm not.” It's nothing short of a miracle that Waites has put together five new companies in six years. "I decided to put God in charge of my decisions and have been completely blessed,” says Waites. Waites is also proud of creating an in-house billing team. Leanne Harris states, "Our patients can talk to a familiar person instead of a computer in another state. We provide medical equipment to improve quality of life, make sure insurance covers the equipment needed and help ease the financial strain that healthcare can cause.” Cindy Weedon elaborates, "For me the greatest enjoyment I get is that we put the needs of the patient first.” Stephanie Alexander, a sales rep says, "It's an awesome experience to walk into a physician's office or rehab facility and see how the equipment we provide changes our patient's daily life. We take so many things for granted. Giving patients a chance to have a better quality of life makes this more than just a job!" Mike Waites would love for you to drop by one of the locations and meet his incredible team. "We have CPAP specialists, expert delivery technicians and amazing customer service reps. We look forward to helping you and your family for many years to come.” All locations are open from 8:00 am - 5:00 pm and have a technician on call 24 hours. Adams Drugs
Over 50 Years of Quality Customer Service and Community Commitment
When Thomas and Emily Vinson saw an unmet healthcare need for a pharmacy near Saint Margaret’s Hospital in 1962, they promptly filled that need by opening Adams Street Drugs. Excellent customer service and community commitment were the principals on which the pharmacy was founded. The reputation of quality service quickly spread through the community. Soon, another location was added behind Baptist Hospital South to continue to serve the people of Montgomery. With the new location, “Street” was dropped from the name of the pharmacy that now continues to thrive as Adams Drugs. Today, Adams Drugs currently has nine open-door pharmacies and one closeddoor pharmacy.
choice of added flavoring, fast and friendly delivery service, specialized packaging services, online refills, automatic refills, text notifications and mobile phone app refills, it does not seem like a pharmacy could provide the community with anything more. But Adams Drugs does! Adams Drugs has a new Wellness Center at Perry Hill Place that offers wellness screenings for state of Alabama employees covered by the state employee’s health insurance plan. Adams Drugs also offers diabetes management and an education program for those patients who find it hard to control their diabetes. Adams Drugs by no means is trying to replace physicians; they are here to help provide additional education to help better manage diabetes.
The primary concern for Adams Drugs is the patient’s health care, filling prescriptions, making sure the patients are taking the correct dosage and taking the time to talk to their patients about their medicine. Adams Drugs is an asset to the River Region community providing their excellent customer service and going the extra mile to make a difference. Rest assured that the excellent customer service, friendly employees and community commitment has not changed from 1962. Adams Drugs operates nine open-door pharmacies, which service the public and one closed-door pharmacy, which fulfills a specialized need to group homes, long-term care facilities and more. Any location still offers the same friendly, personal service that customers of 50 plus years ago depended on! The Pharmacy business is constantly evolving, and Adams Drugs is evolving with the changing times! With full service pharmacies, compounding solutions with the 16

I need a Fitness Trainer! by Corey & Donna Ellis
Most of us have been in the situation where we've met up with a group of friends and or acquaintances to begin an exercise regiment. A few weeks go by, and it may be just you and another person remaining from your group. Also, as the group has diminished in numbers, the workouts have become less intense, stagnant, and repetitious. This is one of the many important reasons a professional trainer is significant, and important to your fitness training goals. You will ALWAYS have a partner, motivator, and coach for as long as you continue to use your fitness trainer's service. If you're not getting that from your current trainer, and you're paying, you need to quickly seek other professional assistance.

As professional fitness trainers, our job is to help you reach any obtainable, and the seemingly non-obtainable goals for your bodies and minds. We are there to encourage you to strive to do more, and assist you in becoming stronger mentally through building higher self esteem, and obtaining more self confidence. If you're feeling beat down, and you never feel encouraged nor motivated by your current fitness trainer, please seek further professional fitness training assistance. It may seem to be a very simple task that we perform as fitness trainers. Though, if you're a trainer that gives his or her all to help each individual client become a better person mentally and physically, it's a very complex and patience demanded profession. We help in more ways than one. Give us at RezFIT a try! RezFIT - 213 Madison Ave. Come down, pick your trainer, and lets get started! Like Riding a Bic ycle: Focus, Balance And Know When To Stop
M
My son just began riding his bike, without training, wheels last year at the age of 4. The delight on his face when he is on bicycle is priceless. The first lesson I taught him was how to use the brakes. You must know when to slow down and when to stop. I showed him how to ride into the grass if he was unable to use the brakes. He was not allowed to ride the bike until he could make it stop. I would tell him, “Unless you know how to stop, you will never develop the ability to ride the bike.” I would jog beside him and chant “Focus, balance and know when to stop.” I keep thinking about this phrase and how it pertains to all our lives. I have caught myself
b y D r. Ka l a i M u g i l a n telling my students to finish the degree, focus on life and classes, keep balance between personal life, academic life and work life, and most importantly, know when to slow down or stop. By using this little ride-a-bicycle-principle of focus, balance and knowing when to stop, you will successfully graduate. I tell anybody who is taking on an endeavor; keep your focus by taking all distractions away. Then, keep balance with all the things that you care about and finally know when to walk away, slow down or stop. By riding this bicycle; you will arrive.

Moms, Stepmoms, & Disengaging to keep the sanity... While I am no expert when it comes to parenting or step-parenting, I do know one thing for sure. We are all going through the same issues. Whether we’re in the middle of it or on the other side of it, we are all going through it. With May comes Mother’s Day, so I thought I would share my best advice when it comes to step-parenting. First, it is tough, but so worth it! There’s no right or wrong way and there are no "real life" step-parenting books available at BooksA-Million. Trust me I’ve looked! What I do have is experience. JT and I have been together for almost 10 years and married for 8 years in October. When we first met, our girls were 4, 6 and 8. There were a lot of adjustments for all of us and there still are! We are learning together. When things started getting the most difficult, I found StepMom Magazine (stepmommag.com) and read an article on “Disengaging.” Here is the article’s definition: Disengaging is A THOUGHTFUL, PLANNED STRATEGY in which a woman who is partnered with a man with kids hands parenting and caretaking
22
The Pride of Montgomery
responsibilities back to him in AN ATTEMPT TO IMPROVE herself, her partnership and her relationship with his kids. It is such an empowering process and it changes the situation for the better. I first practiced “disengaging” when Beccah wanted a horse. We knew that the HOA would never allow a horse in the backyard, so there were boarding fees, all the stuff to ride the horse, feed the horse, etc. And oh yeah, purchasing a horse! Beccah’s mom was on board and so was JT. I was in a nowin situation, so I “disengaged” from it. I told JT that he, Beccah’s mom and Beccah could figure out a plan and move forward and I would support whatever decision they made. It was unbelievably easy and I wasn’t the bad guy, the ugly stepmom and best of all, there was NO FIGHT! On a side note, there is NO horse because she has since moved on to other things. I still practice my “disengaging” and am sometimes successful and sometimes not. But I do wish I’d known about this process from the beginning. It would
have prevented a lot of fights and hurt feelings. So my Mother’s Day present to all the stepmoms out there is to learn to “disengage” just a little. Learning to keep the peace and keep your marriage happy and on track is the most important thing. If your marriage is ok, everything else will fall into place! I read a recent article that tallied the duties Moms do daily - taxi driver, laundry operator, counselor, psychologist, tutor, housekeeper and more. It calculated her annual salary into the six figure range. While I can't give you the paycheck you all certainly deserve, I can say "Happy Mother’s Day" to all moms and stepmoms in the River Region! These are the TWO most difficult and most rewarding jobs that I know! ,,
W
mama
,, by Rev. Dr. Wendy R. Coleman
I know I’m probably showing extreme bias, but I believe my sisters and I have been blessed with the BEST MAMA IN THE UNIVERSE! All of our lives we’ve had the wonderful opportunity to watch this amazing lady do the impossible when the odds were sometimes stacked against her. In spite of the long days she used to work at a shirt factory, Mama would still come home, cook dinner, get us ready for bed and stay up late nights sewing the most beautiful Sunday dresses for us! When her hands were sore and stiff from the ravages of debilitating rheumatoid arthritis, she would still find the strength to comb, plait and straighten our hair so we’d look pretty for school and church. When her own mother was battling the effects of what I believe was undiagnosed Alzheimer’s disease, our sweet Mama moved Grandma Nettie Mae into our home and struggled to maintain a sense of normalcy for all of us. Simply stated, our Mama is awesome. Don’t get me wrong now. My Dad is great too, but I think there’s just something about a mother’s love and strength that earns her a special place in her children’s hearts. It’s a place that most women long to hold in the hearts of their own children . . . so in 2005 when I was diagnosed with endometrial cancer and told that I would need a hysterectomy, you can probably imagine that it was not a good day for me. With one exam, one test, one lab report, the possibility of ever hearing the word “Mama” being spoken from my own child was all but destroyed. Again, it was not a good day for me. I drove home from the doctor’s office trying to figure out if I had heard correctly or if I should get a second opinion or if he was just crazy or how could they screw up the test results or who should I tell what the doctor had said or GOD, HOW COULD YOU DO THIS TO ME . So many more questions flooded my mind and spirit at the same time. It was a horrible day for me. A few days later, I was praying and said to God, “I’ve never really told you, but I wanted to be somebody’s Mama . . .” That was it. That’s all I said. I went for that second opinion. Three months later, I had the surgery. And I recovered just fine. Then, just as if He’d been waiting on me to go through the process, God picked up the Mama conversation. Just as clearly as I had shared my unspoken desire to Him, God spoke back to me. “I know what is in your heart, Daughter, and although you will not birth them physically, you will have children. And they will call you Mama.” Trevor. Trey. Tosh. LaDonness. Erika. LaQuata. DeRon. Theodore. Martez. Stephanie. Robin. Courtney. Janerio. Richard. Calvin. Carl. Cinque. Dontreal. Knalige. Mike. Robert. Shayla. Tommy. You just met some of my beautiful children. They have come into my life in a myriad of ways, but I am blessed to share with each of them a love that surpasses mentor, professor, teacher, director. They have brought immeasurable joy into my life, and as I always tell them, they make my life rich. And guess what? They ALL call me Mama. So I send this little message to not only celebrate my Mama (who by the way is THE BEST MAMA IN THE UNIVERSE), but I also want all of my sisters to be encouraged. You may not have a husband yet and are waiting for marriage to begin a family. You might be married but struggling with infertility. You, like me, might not have the ability to conceive children. But hold your head up, Sister. God has not forgotten about you. He knows your heart better than you do. He has promised to give us the desire of our heart, and He cannot lie. So get ready, Sis, your children are coming. Happy, Blessed Mother’s Day!
Rev. Dr. Wendy R. Coleman serves as Pastor of First Congregational Christian Church, UCC, and as Chair for the Department of Theatre Arts at Alabama State University. 32

Live Pain Free! Improve Strength and Balance!
The Miracle Band has been proven to improve your strength and balance RIGHT when you put it on. The process begins with a base metal (gold, silver, brass, copper). The metal is first polarized and then electronically charged at the same frequency your body naturally has. When the processed metal comes into contact with your body, your atoms INSTANTLY mimic the atoms in the metal and all resonate in the same direction. This results in all your atoms rotating together instantly, and with your entire body working together you achieve a significant improvement in balance and increase in strength from head to toe! Daily functions such as getting up out of your chair, walking, lifting, ANYTHING requiring strength and balance becomes easier.

Jeff Nursey, Montgomery, AL On October 9, 2007 I was hit by a pickup truck while riding my bicycle. My extreme injuries included a shattered left tibia, 5 broken ribs, a broken pelvis and a punctured leg. Even after a year, the pain in my leg was so severe I was barely able to walk. In October of 2009, I even consulted a doctor about amputation. That Christmas, a friend gave me the New You Miracle Band. After two days, the results were unbelievable! It has been almost a year since I have taken any pain medications and I highly recommend this product to anyone suffering from pain. To me, the Miracle Band is worth a billion dollars and is the best Christmas present I have ever received. Glenda Deramus, Montgomery, AL Every morning the arthritis in my hands was so bad, I had to run hot water over them just to loosen my fingers. After I saw the results that Jeff Nursey had with the Miracle Band, I tried it and the pain of my arthritis is completely gone. Now we have to go tell the world. The Miracle Band is a true miracle!

Art Journaling... With A Twist! by Kasey Hope
My new favorite art trend... and it's oh so easy and inexpensive... Art Journaling on old books!! I've seen this on several artsy blogs lately sooo I went to the Dollar Tree and bought a ton of their $1 hardback books. We took the cover off, added some cool duck tape to the cover, and started doodling! This is a great alternative to the more expensive sketchbook and plus art over words is oh so interesting! The easiest way is to start with a sharpie marker and then simply fill in with crayon or watercolor. That's it! You could even do this on old sheet music. Believe me.. the kids will love it and the pieces will be frame worthy! Take a look at a few of the pieces that inspired me! Kasey Hope is an Auburn University graduate and the owner of P'zazz Art Studio in Prattville, where she has been teaching art lessons to adults and children for 5 years.

Summer is just around the corner and you better believe our pets love summer just as much as we do! However, warm weather can be dangerous for pets. It’s hard for our canine and feline friends to keep cool when the sun is beating down. And that’s because animals don’t sweat like people do. Read on to learn some important summer safety tips for our furry friends.
1. Never, ever, EVER leave your pet in a hot car. It can take minutes for a pet to develop heat stroke and suffocate in a car. Most people don’t realize how hot it gets in parked cars. On a 78 degree day, for instance, temperatures in a car can reach 90 degrees in the shade and top 160 degrees if parked directly in the sun! Your best bet is to leave your pet home on warm days or if you cannot leave your pet at home consider enrolling them in a Pet Day Care program.
6. Believe it or not, dogs can sunburn, especially those with short or light-colored coats. And just
like for people, sunburns can be painful for a dog and overexposure to the sun can lead to skin cancer. If you think your dog could sunburn easily, talk to your veterinarian about pet friendly sunscreens. Don’t assume a sunscreen for people is appropriate for your dog.
7. If you can’t trust your dog 100% to come when called, keep him on a leash. Summertime brings
2. Make sure your pet is protected from parasites exciting sights, scents, critters running around and new like fleas, ticks and mosquitoes. If not protected, and exciting places to explore. You never want to lose
your pet is at risk for heartworm, Lyme Disease, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and a host of other nasty and dangerous conditions.
3. Keep the paws in mind. When the sun is cooking, surfaces like asphalt or metal can get dangerously hot! Try to keep your pet off of hot asphalt. Not only can it burn paws, but it can also increase body temperature and lead to overheating. Also, it’s not a good idea to drive around with your dog in the bed of a truck – the hot metal can burn paws quickly (and they can fall out or be injured or killed in an accident). 4. Your pet should always have access to fresh water and shade. Our pets, especially dogs, get much thirstier
than we do when they get hot, and other than panting and drinking, they really have no way to cool themselves down. Also, get your pet in the shade as often as possible. While dogs and cats like to sunbathe, direct sunlight can overheat them (especially dogs) and cause heat stroke.
5. If your dog loves to swim, give him his very own "kiddy pool." Dogs who love the water love it even
more in the hot months and getting wet keeps them cool. Providing a small, kid-sized pool will also keep them safe.
your pet because he became distracted in an unfamiliar environment or harmed in an accident. Most important, not every dog is meant to be off-leash. Some dogs just cannot be trusted to come when called. Make sure you understand your dog’s tendencies and err on the side of being cautious.
8. After a long winter, many dogs put on a few extra pounds. Summer is the perfect time to increase exercise levels and get your pet in shape. A pet that
maintains a healthy weight throughout his lifetime will live, on average, 2-3 years longer than an overweight pet! Just make sure not to push your pet over his excursion limit! Give him adequate rest and if your pet is especially overweight, make sure you ease him into physical activity. Summer can be a great time to spend with our companion animals, but it’s important to keep safety in mind as the days grow longer and hotter! Make sure you talk with your veterinarian about any concerns you have about your pet’s ability to adjust to our region’s heat and humidity. For additional pet tips, visit our face book page.

The Pride of Montgomery
The Taylor Crossing Animal Hospital Difference One vision, one location and three great doctors make for one happy pet. Most pet owners agree visiting the veterinarian can be stressful. As loving pet owners, we strive to make the lives of our innocent friends happy and comfortable, doing anything possible to prevent unwanted discomfort. So, the doctors and staff of TCAH have made it their mission to take the “fear” out of veterinary care. Their vision includes a facility that is “fun,” doctors you can trust and technology that can heal.
A Home Away From Home “We experience daily the difference our home environment has made for the pets that see us for treatment. Knowing they can have a great time with our staff at Taylor Crossing Animal Hospital makes the transition for treatment, surgery, grooming or overnight boarding less stressful for the pet as well as the owner. Our philosophy has always been, “make a pet feel at home and give him an opportunity to have fun before you begin the poking and prodding,” explains Dr. Zeb A. King. “This has definitely been a key to our continued success as one of Alabama’s largest veterinarian, boarding, grooming and daycare facilities.”
Pet Owner’s Trust Other than his owner, the most important person in a dog or cat’s life is his veterinarian. Therefore, choosing the right veterinarian for your companion
animal is one of the most important decisions a pet owner will make. Without mutual trust, the relationship is bound to fail. “In the past 30 plus years I have practiced veterinarian medicine, one thing is for certain, pet owners are concerned about the care and treatment protocols recommended for their pets. Their concern comes with many questions that, as a vet, I feel an obligation to answer. Sometimes, I have the answer, sometimes there is not an answer and sometimes I do not know the answer. However, one thing is for sure, we do not have a problem being honest with
our patients. If a referral to a specialist is needed, we give it. If a second opinion is wanted, we encourage it. Our clients know we strive to choose the best affordable treatment options and preventative care for their pets. Dr. Mitchell, Dr. King and myself feel that trust has helped sustain our hospital’s success over the 25 years we have been in operation,” explains Dr. Robert M. Speight, Jr.
Advancement in Medical Technology The field of veterinarian medicine has been exposed to many of the same technological advances used in the field of human medicine. “We are now able to diagnose and treat a growing list of maladies affecting dogs and cats, allowing pet owners to enjoy many more years with their cherished companions. Adding ultra-sound technology, laser surgery, echocardiograms, digital x-ray and dental digital x-ray to our practice has allowed us to stay up-to-date with
the ever-changing field of veterinary medicine. The digital equipment also enables us to send images to veterinarian specialists for consult on hard to treat disease states. This technology has saved our pet owners countless hours of travel and expense.” shares Dr. Philip Mitchell. “We are dedicated to prolonging and enriching the lives of our animal patients. Staying up to date with veterinarian technology is the only way to ensure this happens.” Whether you are looking for a trusting veterinarian, boarding/daycare facility or groomer for your pet, TCAH maintains a philosophy that is sure to please even the most finicky pet owner. Insurance 101
Boat Insurance Basics by Henry Hernandez, State Farm™ Insurance Agent
D
id you know that boat insurance is one of the earliest known forms of insurance? Ancient sailors knew firsthand about the risks of a life at sea and sought to insure their vessels against unpredictable waters. Insuring your recreational boat will help give you peace of mind whenever and wherever you cast off.
B
oat insurance policies can vary widely in what they do and do not cover based on a number of considerations, including the type of boat, the waters it will traffic, and how many months of the year the boat will be used. Still, there are a few basic kinds of coverage you can expect to receive, as well as some potential discounts for safe boaters.
Physical Damage
Liability Coverage
This coverage insures your boat against damage and loss caused by common risks, such as sinking, fire, storms, theft, and collision. The property covered can vary, but the policy will usually cover the hull and other permanent components, such as:
This coverage applies if your boat causes injury to others or damage to other boats, docks, or structures. Keep in mind that the injury or damage can be due to direct contact with your vessel or situations caused by your vessel, such as large wakes. Good liability coverage may provide protection against lawsuits, including the payment of settlements and legal fees.
• Motors • Extra fuel tanks, batteries, etc. • Anchors • Onboard safety equipment, such as flotation devices and fire extinguishers A trailer may or may not be covered, depending on the policy. When choosing your policy, be sure to ask whether you will be insured for the boat’s replacement cost or its actual cash value. A replacement cost policy will reimburse you the cost of repairing the boat to its original condition or replacing the boat with the same or a similar model. A policy based on actual cash value will reimburse you for the current market value of the repair or replacement (the original price minus depreciation).
Other Coverage Your insurer may offer additional kinds of coverage to go with your basic boat insurance. If you have other needs, ask your insurance agent what coverage is available.
Discounts The best way to lower your boat insurance premiums is to become a safer boater. For example, many insurers offer discounts to boaters who have completed an approved boating safety course. Your boat may also qualify for a discount by passing the U.S. Coast Guard Vessel Safety Check. Fabergé: Exquisite Jewelry Since 1842 by Geri Cronier Graduate Gemologist, Jewelry Designer, and VP Croniers Fine Jewelry
What a Perfect Mother’s Day Gift ! not allowed to eat eggs. These days of abstinence provided the community with an abundance of eggs to be eaten throughout the holidays.
The Fabergé Egg has always been a representation of life. During the pre-Christian era, the egg was revered as the mysterious seed of life. In the period of preEaster fasting, Christians were

In Orthodox Russia, Easter has always been the highest holiday. Artistically decorated eggs represented the season. Due to strict religious constraints, the ruler of the country could not present his wife with a chicken egg on the holiday. In 1885, Czar Alexander III asked jeweler Peter Carl Fabergé to create the most beautiful Easter egg made of precious metals and gemstones. Fabergé created many of these glorious eggs for the Russian royal family throughout the years. During the October Revolution of 1917, Fabergé was forced to close his workshops. Three years later, he died in exile in Switzerland. The Fabergé egg tradition lay dormant for nearly seven decades. Fabergé’s sons tried to revive the art form, but with no success.
In 1990, Victor Mayor restored the tradition of the Fabergé Egg. He was the only work master certified on behalf of Fabergé Company in New York. Since that time, the famous Fabergé Eggs, mini egg pendants, lockets, rings and other jewels of exquisite quality have been produced.
These eggs are so rare that very few jewelry stores world-wide have any inventory. As luck would have it, Cronier’s Fine Jewelry carries Fabergé Eggs. Prices range from $700 up. These eggs would be THE PERFECT Mother’s Day gift!

Worth A Look
Hot Trends & Cool Looks from the
Catwalk!
by Rebekah Edwards LUSH Makeup Art
The catwalks have spoken and delivered the hottest makeup trends for Spring/Summer 2014! From bright orange lipstick to purple eye shadow, get the looks now with these helpful tips: The look: Orchid, lilac and lavender shades are invading makeup bags everywhere! The coolest way to wear this trend is with eye shadow. But if wearing a purple eye isn't your thing, try a bold purple lip. I love Smashbox lipstick in Vivid Violet. If this look is too dark, blot and apply a light lip gloss on top, such as Smashbox’s Sparkling Champagne. The look: Red and orange are all the rage this season as well. Bring color to your lips and brighten your whole face. Sunset Junction is the perfect coral lipstick. Or try a fun matte color, such as Fuchsia Flash Pink. All Smashbox Cosmetics can be found at Doug's 2 Salon-Spa.
