School's Back! Montgomery Mayor Todd Strange

Swarms of yellow school buses joining our morning commutes and the distant sounds of marching band practice in the early evening can only mean one thing: A new school year has dawned for students and parents in the River Region. As we embark on exciting challenges this year, it’s amazing to look back on the success we’ve recently seen in our school system. The seeds for this success were planted when city and county leaders partnered with our business community and the Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce to champion education for our children. Through these efforts, we significantly increased the standards for academics in our schools, and they experienced tremendous growth. This is evident by the 90 percent increase in enrollment in AP courses since 2008, while class offerings have also increased 50 percent. At the same time, students have demonstrated great promise as scholarship offers received by MPS seniors increased by $11 million from 2011 to 2013. Our students’ desire to learn has led to our schools regularly outperforming thousands of others across the country – and the nation’s starting to notice. U.S. News and World Report recognized Loveless Academic Magnet School as the #1 ranked magnet school in not only Alabama, but the nation! Not to mention, LAMP, Carr Middle and MacMillan Elementary have implemented International Baccalaureate programs. And don’t forget Brewbaker Technology and Booker T. Washington Magnet Schools ranked in the top 5 percent in U.S. high schools. It’s safe to say we’ve made progress! It’s also safe to say this progress is a result of our community’s commitment to providing the very best for our children. Our commitment to our children has been demonstrated time and again through the service Montgomery families and young professionals have donated to our schools. Throughout this year, we’ll build on this commitment and donate our time and talents to help our schools, whether that means organizing after-school activities or leading a group in cleaning-up after a game. Looking back, we have a lot for which we should be proud. Our schools are improving every year thanks to the partnerships in our community that have helped propel our schools to national leaders. This school year will be full of new opportunities to help our children succeed, and as parents, friends and neighbors, we’ll make sure they do by providing every advantage possible. -Mayor Todd Strange 4

Henry Hernandez, Agent Meet your Good Neighbor independent State Farm Agent Henry Hernandez. Henry Hernandez has been a successful businessman and an active community member in Montgomery and the River Region for over 18 years. He graduated from The University of Texas with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in computer science and a Master’s of Science degree in Judicial Administration from Auburn University Montgomery. In 1996 he cofounded and served as Systems Administrator and Chief Financial Officer of The Center for Physical Medicine and Pain Management for 14 years. In 2010 he established his own independent insurance agency, Henry Hernandez State Farm to continue assisting Montgomery and the River Region by helping those in our community protect themselves and their families with comprehensive insurance coverage. Henry knew early in his insurance career that the way to make a difference in our community was to be an agent to offer exceptional customer service with the convenience of a full-service office for all his customer’s needs: insurance, banking, and retirement. Also essential in his business success was to build relationships with the people in our community. By working on-one-one with each client Henry is able to help his customer discover the risk exposure in his or her insurance policy that could possibly lead to financial devastation and provide specific solutions. He often asks his clients “If something happened to you today, what will your family have to deal tomorrow without you? Could they handle both the emotional and financial devastation without you?” Henry often uses his expansive business background with other small business owners in areas of business liability, workers compensation, life insurance, and retirement planning. Insurance is too important in protecting us all from the financial devastation seen in today’s economy. Henry believes helping others protect his or her investments will strengthen our community and enable our economy to grow. Henry Hernandez’s training and interests include computer information technology and aviation. He is a flight instructor and multi-engine commercial pilot and for many years he has volunteered for the Alabama Civil Air Patrol. He especially enjoys being an Angel Flight pilot providing piloting services to terminally ill patients for travel to and from medical treatment. Henry is currently a class member of Leadership Montgomery, an elite group of selected business professionals in our community. Henry’s wife, Rachelle, and their two daughters, Gabriella and Izabella are delighted that he is helping the citizens of Montgomery and the River Region with their total needs of auto, home, life insurance, banking, and retirement.

You know about 911. You’ve heard of 411.

But what is 311?

8

The Pride of Montgomery

In a nutshell, 311 is a one-stop call center for all non-emergency City of Montgomery services. Do you have a problem that the city needs to handle? Is there a traffic light not working, a blockage in a nearby ditch or are you wondering when you can catch the next downtown trolley ride? Stop looking through the blue pages for city department phone numbers! 311 Access Montgomery will take your problem to the right department, and customer service representatives will even call you back to ensure you are satisfied with the city service provided. All citizens calling in will be given a service request tracking ID number. You can use this number to reference your request if you call back, or you can create an online account to follow the progress of their request online. Updates will be entered as progress is made. This call center was started in April 2010. Since then, customer service agents have taken over 100,000 phone calls and handled over 30,000 service requests. Call 311 from the hours of 7 a.m. until 5 p.m., Monday through Friday or use the self-service feature through the City of Montgomery website: montgomeryal.gov, then look for the 311 logo. For cell phones that do not recognize 311, call 240-INFO (4636).

City Services, such as requesting assistance with lost or stolen trash cans, reporting downed power lines, or finding out when the city is scheduled to spray for mosquitos, can be requested and tracked through 311 Access Montgomery.

For more information about 311 Access Montgomery, just call 311! They’re happy to help!

The Most historic cit y

M

Montgomery was recently voted the most historic city in America during a USA Today poll, and this city deserves the award. As with most topics, there have been those who have laughed and criticized the poll results and those who acknowledge Montgomery’s place in American history. To those on both sides, I would like to point out some reasons Montgomery deserves this award. Growing from two small towns, Montgomery took the lead in economic growth in the South. It was one of the fastest growing cities in the “old southwest” during the 19th century and was a very wealthy city. Montgomery became the permanent state capitol and was chosen as the seat of the new Confederate government in 1861. President Jefferson Davis was elected and inaugurated on the steps of the state capitol while the Confederate capital was still in Montgomery. The chair and Bible used for this occasion are preserved in the state archives and the Bible is still used today when a new Governor takes the oath of office. Montgomery also had an iron works located along the river where Powder Magazine Park is located. It was at this iron works where the CSS Nashville, a Confederate ironclad, was made and sent down river. When the Montgomery Gas Company began, metal pipes were used to transport gas, rather than other types, which were used in larger cities such as Baltimore. Montgomery was the

b y G e o f f S to u g h

first city in the Western Hemisphere to have an electric streetcar. The Wright Brothers chose Montgomery as the location for the first flight school, established where Maxwell AFB in now located. Hank Williams began his career here and Nat King Cole was born here. Most people do not realize if it were not for Montgomery, there probably would not be a Birmingham, or at least the way that city is known today. Alabama was also the first state to have a building dedicated as the State Archives, which is located on Washington Avenue. Montgomery was also center stage for the birth of the civil rights movement, which changed life across the entire country, not just Montgomery or the South. Segregation existed throughout the country and the movement which began in Montgomery helped change the world. The city of Montgomery has played a vital role in state, national, and international issues throughout its history. This article has only touched on a few of those instances, but should help others understand how the vote as most historic city is well deserved. While much of the vote was probably due to the Confederacy and the Civil Rights movement, Montgomery has played host to much more over time. I hope readers, especially the citizens of this great city, will take the opportunity to be proud of what Montgomery has witnessed and the part it has played, and continues to play, in our country’s past and future.

Health & Fitness DR. RHO KNOWS... GUMS & TEETH Mrs. Jones was visibly shaking as she walked into my office.

““Please don’t take this personally… she said, as she sat in the dental chair, her eyes welling with tears.,

. . . but I hate dentists.” As I sat with her to talk about it, she told me her whole story. When Mrs. Jones was a little girl she had a painful and terrifying experience with her dentist. Since then she had avoided seeing a dentist for almost 30 years. Today, her hands wrenched into tight fists, a sheen of perspiration glazing her brow, she sat afraid, embarrassed about her teeth and in pain. The pain in her mouth brought her to me. Every other part of her wanted to run back out the door. If you or someone you know can relate to Mrs. Jones’ story, you’re not alone. Sitting with her, listening to her story, feeling her restlessness and fear, I was reminded of the hundreds of times I’ve sat with patients listening to their struggle. The fear of pain, lack of control, the loss of personal space and

Up to 75% of the population experience some form of dental anxiety. embarrassment don’t discriminate across class, sex, age or race. Somewhere around 15% have such a severe fear of the dentist that they avoid going altogether. When I graduated from dental school, someone gave me a gag gift: a copy of the low-budget horror movie called “The Dentist.” The title said it all. The fact that the media can produce a scary movie for the masses and just call it “The Dentist” says even more about how so many people can relate to that fear. As a side note: it’s a terrible movie. Don’t bother watching it. 12

The Pride of Montgomery

So how do you overcome dental anxiety? When I was around 6 years old growing up in Washington State, I started to cry during a filling because I was afraid. My dentist, who I really liked, put his hand over my mouth until I couldn’t breathe enough to cry. It worked. I stopped crying, but I still remember it. Going to the dentist was completely changed for me after that. Mom would have to bribe me. When that didn’t work, she’d threaten me. When that didn’t work, she’d have to physically carry me to the dentist kicking and hollering. I’ve heard similar stories and not too similar stories, but the differences in the experience doesn’t matter so much. What does matter is that the life-long effect is the same. The part of our brain that remembers the experience is the same part that controls our flight or fight responses. It’s automatic. It’s as easy to simply talk or reason out your anxiety as it is to stop your own heart with willpower alone. To think that you can or should overcome it will only leave you feeling ashamed about it as if somehow you are flawed. As I said before, 75% of all people experience some form of dental anxiety. You’re not flawed. You’re in the majority. You’re normal! So what things can help you work through your dental anxiety? If you can’t beat it, have your dentist join you. Let him or her know. Communicating with your dentist on a one-on-one level can really help to relieve your fears. We’re not only dentists, we’re patients. Talk to your dentist about your anxiety, what happens during the procedure and what to expect. Talking to a personable, caring dentist can create a lot more trust, which alleviates the fear of being out of control and handing it to some masked person with gloves. Instead, you can relax into trusting another human being who cares about you and your well-being. Distract yourself. Bring some of your favorite

? s u o i x n A ! e n o l A t o N e r ’ u o Y

music with you and listen to it. Some dentists have televisions or glasses that play movies. Listening to music or watching television or even just letting your mind wander can do wonders to ease anxiety. Have hand signals. It can be difficult to talk when your mouth is open and full of hands and tools. If you establish a gesture as simple as raising your hand that signals your dentist to stop, you can have control. You can use the signal if you are uncomfortable, need your mouth rinsed, or just need to rest a little and catch your breath. Medication may be an option. In the early days of dentistry, a string was tied to his tooth and the other side to a horse. Two burly men held the hapless victim down while the horse galloped away into the sunset with tooth bouncing down the trail behind it. Fortunately, things have changed. Back then, it took two big dudes to work you through your fear. Today, we can help to alleviate the fear itself.

Dental Anxiolysis refers to the use of a mild oral sedative to achieve “light sedation,” or a heightened state of comfort and relaxation. Although you will not actually be unconscious, you will enjoy a heightened state of relaxation that can carry you easily through the procedure. From talking with my dentist friends other dentists around the country, I’m very happy to let you know that a vast majority of modern dentists want all of their patients to have a good experience with them. The techniques and equipment that are available today to lesson or eliminate discomfort and anxiety have come a long way within the last 10 years alone. I have sat in hours-long discussions with hundreds of dentists on how to make their procedures painless and take less time. We purchase certain

equipment and materials solely to increase your comfort and decrease your anxiety. Some can prescribe for you anti-anxiety medications. Many are even looking at how our offices are decorated to make your comfort just a little bit better. And most importantly, we are listening to you and making adjustments to create a relationship where we are one human helping another. Though dental anxiety may always be around, there is a solution. Talk to your dentist about which is best for you. Mrs. Jones did just that. Not only did she get through her dental visits with ease, she doesn’t cover her mouth with her hand when she smiles anymore. She says that now she has an extra hand so that she can smile and hug at the same time. She’s good at it too!

Dr. Frank K. Rho received his Doctorate of Dental Surgery from Loma Linda University in 1997. He has worked with numerous dentists and specialists and has lectured in communities on the subject of dental care throughout the United States. He is an active member of a number of organizations composed of dentists who keep abreast of the latest trends and techniques in dentistry. Dr. Rho practices general dentistry in Prattville, Alabama. Steps to Becoming a Disciplined Dreamer By Tasha M. Scott, Personal Development Coach

Dreams live inside of us and serve as a constant reminder of what we have yet to become, but how often do we accomplish our dreams? How often do we move past the obstacles of fear-induced rationalization? More often than not, we resort to talking ourselves out of a dream that could have taken our life to the next level, forfeiting our vision and falling into a cycle of regret. Dreams come effortlessly, but discipline is necessary to bring them to life. The “discipline process” is not an easy one, but the first steps to become a Disciplined Dreamer are acknowledgement and acceptance; putting these steps to action today, opens up a world of possibilities for tomorrow.

1) Acknowledge that the dream inside of you is from God.

2) Renew your mindset and make a commitment.

3) Stop looking for limitations and start looking for possibilities.

4) Declare what you believe yet cannot see.

With each step, you have to accept that God is your source of inspiration and strength from beginning to end, and that some resources won’t be released to you until you accept your dream. It’s time to acknowledge and declare! I’ll go first: God, I thank you that you loved me so much that you would give me this dream and trust me to see it through. I rebel against procrastination, laziness and FEAR. I declare that I will stop looking for obstacles, and will look for possibilities. I will make the time and take the proper steps to lay the necessary foundation. I believe that you will guide my steps. I will protect the dream/vision. I declare that I am a Disciplined Dreamer. Your turn! Accept and acknowledge your dream, and have faith that God will guide you every step of the way.

Dry eye is something almost all of us have experienced and 48% of adults have persistent dry eye symptoms. The key to relief of these symptoms is finding an eye doctor that specializes in treatment of dry eye, and then following through on the recommendations.

Dry eye is a chronic and usually progressive condition that can be managed, but may not be curable. Symptoms are: •

Itchy/gritty feeling

Watering eyes

Redness

Burning

Blurred vision

Feeling like something is in the eye

Side effects of medicines

Natural aging (especially menopause in women)

Chronic diseases such as diabetes and arthritis •

Decreased blink rate from computer and smartphone use

Some of the many causes of dry eye are:

Allergies

Ventilation such as ceiling fans

Dry or windy climate

Long term contact lens wear

Treatment of dry eye is determined by the severity of it on presentation. Most treatments revolve around treatment of meibomian gland syndrome which is recognized as one of the primary causes of dry eye.

Mild to moderate dry eye treatment options: •

Lipid based lubricant such as Systane Balance

Omega 3 fatty acids

Prescription eye drop called Restasis requiring long term use

Hot Compresses

Punctual Occlusion

Hydration with more water intake and less caffeine and alcohol consumption

Moderate to severe dry eye treatment requires a more sophisticated approach, sometimes requiring simple in-office procedures and stacking of some of the above treatments. Because of the chronic nature of dry eye syndrome, it requires lifelong effort. Achieving a successful outcome for treatment of dry eye requires correct diagnosis, management, and follow through. It is not a short process, but always worth the effort. Success is waking up to fresh feeling eyes and clear vision.

Practice these important seven steps to reduce your digital eyestrain and please discuss these issues with your children. If there are questions or concerns I can be reached at Primary Eyecare Associates at 8436 Vaughn Road in Montgomery or at 334-271-3900. 18

Health & Fitness

Keep it real with yourself! by Corey & Donna Ellis

When it comes to getting yourself physically fit and in shape, it's not an easy task by any stretch of the imagination. It takes dedication, and a focused mindset.

Okay, a little over half of the year is behind us, and you've overcome six to seven months of striving to become healthier, or even just obtaining a better looking physique. Are you satisfied with the results thus far? Well, if you are, we definitely commend you for your consistency and continuance to push your body, lifestyle, and goals to more intense levels. It surely makes you feel good within, when you know you've taken your body from being overweight or slimmed framed with no muscle tone, to a well sculpted, defined piece of art within a human body. But, the individuals that don't feel as though your results are where they should be, are you really doing what it takes to get to the level that you're trying to reach? Speaking from a trainer’s point of view, we

22

The Pride of Montgomery

want you to get the body that you're searching for, but you have to want to put in the work with your eating, and exercise regiment. You can't continuously meet with your personal trainer or boot camp month after month, and think that the intensity level at which you perform is going to stay as is. If you are operating at the same level, you will not see a huge amount of results, and to tell you the truth, that trainer isn't really doing his or her job by allowing you to stay comfortable within your workout regiments. We are here to push you out of your comfort zone! Yes, we wish you could stay at a constant intensity level and get major results. That would actually make our jobs easier. It doesn't work that way though. So, keep it real with yourself! Are you truly applying the

effort that you probably should, to transform your body into what you would like it to appear as? Know this, just to maintain what you have already accomplished within living a healthier lifestyle, and obtaining a better looking body, takes many different conversations with self to say, I need to take my mind set, and intensity level to a higher level. Once you've acknowledged what specifically it is that you personally need to do, that's when you will reap the benefits of your labor. Life Lessons

I

Surrender Dr. Kalai Mugilan, MA, MPH, PHD

I am fascinated with surrender, because I have always heard, "Let God and let go." So, to me, surrender doesn't mean that I am giving up on the process, but giving somebody else control of the process. Surrender, therefore, was intentional for me. It did not mean I had run out of ideas, or I had no choice. Usually, people who surrender do so out of necessity, because they have no other choice but to surrender or give up. At this point, they remove themselves from actively participating in the process of what needs to be done. However, I think it is wiser to remove ourselves from the outcome, but still concentrate on what needs to be done. Even in battle, the process is determined by the motivation and active participation of the opposing sides. While you can not know the outcome of the battle, you can not hope to win it by giving up. Taking this approach, surrender then becomes a little bit deeper than giving up or abandoning the pursuit, but the realization that while you are not in control of the outcome, you're not giving up on the process. Giving up the process means totally giving up the pursuit or the intentions. Surrender in this instance could mean that the outcome is no longer in my will, but the process is my will. Depression, anger and negative feelings often result when we hit that brick wall and literally run out of ideas about what to do in our situation, or the next move to make, and we eventually end up giving up the process.

I

I recommend surrender. Committing to the process, and giving up the outcome is surrender.

JT & Leanne - Football season is here! Hard to believe summer is over and the kids are back in school! It really does seem like time flies by especially when the kids are growing up. This year, Rebeccah Lynn (our youngest) is a Freshman at Prattville High School, Ashlee is a sophomore, and Kimberlee (our oldest) is a freshman at Huntingdon College. Big Red Weekend at Huntingdon was a huge turning point in her life (and ours) as she checked into college, picked up her laptop included with tuition, and took her first steps toward becoming independent! We also learned recently that Huntingdon College is one of the fastest growing colleges in America. Huntingdon ranked #12 Nationally in the 2014 Chronicle of Higher Education Report! We'll be rooting for the Huntingdon Hawks this year (NCAA Division III) and probably attending quite a few games on campus. In addition,

JT will be screaming "Roll Tide" and Leanne "War Eagle" when it comes to the infamous SEC Rivalry that has divided our household since we moved to Alabama in 2006! When it comes to Football, it's as much about the food as it is the game! Catering done right is a score every time! Newk's Eatery here in Montgomery (near Taylor & Vaughn in Sturbridge) and also in Auburn (for Tiger Fans - at the Tigertown Shopping Center) has a wide variety of tailgate options including their Triple Take Platter which includes homemade chicken salad, pasta salad, fresh fruit and gourmet crackers (one of Leanne's favorites)! They also have boxed salads and sandwiches, a fantastic shrimp cocktail tray, vegetable trays, soups, dessert trays and much more! They are locally owned by a husband wife team, just like us. Matt Collins (co-owner - pictured) is featured regularly on our TV show on

WSFA12 News. JT loves their California Style Pizzas and even recently got to make one in the Newk's Kitchen for a show segment! Faith

A New Work The children of Israel spent a lot of time remembering the past. Yet God is always doing a new thing! We compare our present existence with the way things used to be in “the good ole days.” Maybe we look back on the time before we had kids and think how easy life was then. Perhaps we reminisce about the days when we were single and wish we could go back and experience the freedom of being single again. Or maybe we remember our college or high school days when we could live the carefree lifestyle all over again. We are often concerned with the way things used to be that we miss the way things are supposed to be now. “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See I am doing a new thing!” Often we are so wrapped up in yesterday that we can’t experience the provisions and mercies of today. We allow the lure of what used to be, keep us from experiencing the joy of what is to come. If you are driving down the road in your car, you can’t do a good job of driving if your eyes are always focused on your rearview mirror. The rearview is there for a purpose but you cannot spend the majority of your time looking in it. You are supposed to look forward and only check the rearview periodically in order to gain a perspective of your surroundings. Likewise, you and I must spend our time looking forward to the changes God wants us to make now and not let what has happened in our past, consume our future. To continue to look backward could cause a tragic potentially fatal crash!!!! Allen Bowen

Live Pain Free! Improve Strength and Balance!

The Miracle Band has been proven to improve your strength and balance RIGHT when you put it on. The process begins with a base metal (gold, silver, brass, copper). The metal is first polarized and then electronically charged at the same frequency your body naturally has. When the processed metal comes into contact with your body, your atoms INSTANTLY mimic the atoms in the metal and all resonate in the same direction. This results in all your atoms rotating together instantly, and with your entire body working together you achieve a significant improvement in balance and increase in strength from head to toe! Daily functions such as getting up out of your chair, walking, lifting, ANYTHING requiring strength and balance becomes easier.

Jeff Nursey, Montgomery, AL Seven years ago, I was hit by a pickup truck while riding my bicycle. My extreme injuries included a shattered left tibia, 5 broken ribs, a broken pelvis and a punctured lung. Even after a year, the pain in my leg was so severe I was barely able to walk. Two years after my accident, I consulted Roland Hester about amputation. That Christmas, a friend gave me the New You Miracle Band. After two days, the results were unbelievable! It has been over 5 years since I have taken any pain medications and I highly recommend this product to anyone suffering from pain. To me, the Miracle Band is worth a billion dollars and is the best Christmas present I have ever received. Glenda Deramus, Montgomery, AL Every morning the arthritis in my hands was so bad, I had to run hot water over them just to loosen my fingers. After I saw the results that Jeff Nursey had with the Miracle Band, I tried it and the pain of my arthritis is completely gone. Now we have to go tell the world. The Miracle Band is a true miracle!

“Educating Bright Children With Unique Learning Differences”

Churchill Academy

Churchill Academy is a one-of-a-kind school for bright children with unique learning differences. Many are gifted in specific intellectual and academic areas, but their potential is overlooked by educators because they aren’t able to achieve in mainstream academic environments with traditional methods, materials and techniques. These children learn differently. Churchill Academy is a unique, supportive environment with individualized academic programming for grades K-12. Churchill’s low student-teacher ratio, tailored learning programs, remedial programming, and behavior management techniques teach to students’ strengths, and addresses their weaknesses. We provide detailed biannual progress reports, training seminars, and other activities which foster parent involvement.

Kid's Corner

Garage Art by Kasey Hope

I love finding common things in my garage to use to turn into art. Here is my newest creation that you can do at home too! Supplies needed: -old wood - caulk -acrylic paint 1. Use the caulk to draw a design on the wood. We chose a cross . 2. Let the caulk dry for about a day and then paint! That's it! This is a easy way to make gifts or original art for yourself! Have fun creating! Kasey Hope is an Auburn University graduate and the owner of P'zazz Art Studio in Prattville, where she has been teaching art lessons to adults and children for 7 years.

Meow, Woof & Chirp

The Bi g B a d Wo lf o n Pet ’s G ro omi ng Hab i t s by Dr. Zeb A. King, DVM

Keeping your dog and cat healthy means paying regular attention to bathing, grooming and brushing. Even pets with short hair will benefit from this often overlooked aspect of pet care. Grooming does more than just make your pet look and smell nice. There are also medical reasons why regular grooming will help your dog and cat stay healthy and feel better.

“The Better to See You With” Keeping your dog’s face free of long hair, will make your pet more comfortable, and could help prevent common eye problems. Many dogs, such as the Shih Tzu, Lhasa Apso and Poodle, have long hair that hangs in the eyes causing irritation and damage to the cornea. If your dog has hair lying on their eyes it may be time for them to visit a groomer. Another option is pulling the hair back in a bow to keep your dog’s face clean and clear. Never use scissors or sharp implements around the eyes. Scissoring needs to be done by a trained groomer or under a veterinarian’s supervision.

“My, What Big Ears You Have” Those long floppy ears are endearing, but they cover your dog’s ear canal creating a moist warm environment that lacks air circulation. This can cause dogs to suffer from chronic ear infections that can be difficult to cure, and can re-occur. Cocker Spaniels, Shar-Peis, and Golden Retrievers are just a few of the breeds that suffer from this all too often. Infections that go unchecked, can result in serious and painful ear disease. Cleaning your dogs’s ears may look easy, but it is more difficult than you may think. Dogs have long ear canals, and improper cleaning can result in a ruptured ear drum, pain, or lacerations of the canal. Consequently, if your dog’s ears are infected, they will be too painful to clean at home. This job is better left to the experts. Having your dog’s ears regularly cleaned at your veterinarian’s office or by a trusted groomer, will make this task more pleasant for your dog.

“What Sharp Nails You Have” By far the most dreaded grooming chore for many pet owners is trimming their pet’s nails. Although, this process is not painful, pets typically do not like their nails trimmed and can be completely uncooperative. Despite your pet’s protest, nail trimming is a must. Long overgrown nails often break at the base exposing the nail bed. Walking on long nails can be painful, aggravate arthritis, and cause the toes to splay. Long nails can also curl around and grow into the pads. Most pet owners choose to have their pet’s groomer or veterinarian perform this task to avoid trimming the nail too close to the nail bed which can cause pain and bleeding.

Dr. Zeb A. King has been practicing veterinary medicine for over 20 years at Taylor Crossing Animal Hospital. 50

Insurance 101

True or false? Test your coverage iq by Henry Hernandez, State Farm™ Insurance Agent

Only 45 percent of Americans feel confident enough to make insurance decisions, according to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC). Where do you stand? There’s no time like the present to enhance your insurance literacy. The more you know, the better able you are to protect yourself, your family and your largest investments. Test your knowledge and learn more with this short quiz: 1. Your homeowners coverage should equal the estimated replacement cost of your home, not the purchase price 2. Your homeowners insurance policy covers flood damage. 3. A solution for people who want extra levels of liability insurance protection above the limits provided by their Auto and Homeowners Policies is called an Overflow Policy. 4. Your address may impact your auto insurance rate. 5. Your life insurance policy should cover 10 times your yearly income.

ANSWERS 1. True. It’s up to you to choose the coverages and limits that meet your needs, but it’s best to insure your home for at least 100 percent of its estimated replacement cost —the cost of repairing or replacing your home to restore its original condition. Estimated replacement cost is different from market value or purchase price. If you select a coverage amount lower than the estimated replacement cost, certain coverages may be unavailable to you. Periodically review your coverages and limits with your agent and notify your agent of any changes or additions to your home. 2. False. Homeowners policies typically exclude flood coverage. Adding coverage may be worth looking into, no matter where you live. According to the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), more than 20 percent of all flood claims happen in moderate- to low-risk areas. State Farm® agents enrolled in the NFIP Direct Program are able to write and service flood insurance .coverage for qualifying homes directly through the federal government program, NFIP Direct. 3. False. A Personal Liability Umbrella Policy layers on top of your existing existing underlying policies to provide extra protection when home and auto liability limits are exhausted. Your agent can help explain how a Personal Liability Umbrella can help ensure that your family and financial health are protected in the event of an accident or lawsuit. 4. True. People who live in densely populated areas—noted for higher occurrences of accidents and theft—will likely pay more for auto insurance than those who live in rural areas, where accidents and theft are less prevalent. Other factors that may influence the cost of auto insurance: vehicle type, coverage, and driving record. 5. False. There is no “one-size-fits-all” formula for selecting life insurance coverage—it’s a personal matter. The State Farm Life Insurance Calculator can estimate the amount of coverage you may need to help protect your family. Want to know more? Enhance your knowledge of insurance by talking to your State Farm agent. Establishing an open dialogue with your State Farm agent is the best way to answer any questions you may have. Because insurance protection is a contract, any coverage descriptions in this article are general only and are not statements of contract. All coverage are subject to all policy provisions, including applicable endorsements. 52

Shopping Spree

New Ways To Add

Color

by Geri Cronier Graduate Gemologist, Jewelry Designer, and VP Croniers Fine Jewelry

Big color is everywhere in fine fashion jewelry. A few years ago, most people were investing only in smaller, conservative rings with precious stones when building their jewelry collection. I find my customers more determined than ever in trying to distinguish their styles from that of the rest of the world and costume designers. The desire to be different seems to inspire openness to new stone cutting styles, juxtaposition of metal colors, and exploration into many new gemstones and hues for design. The many colors of gulf coast water can be seen in green amethyst, chalcedony, and aquamarine. There are new cuts and varieties of sapphire and ruby currently being used. These, along with metals like rose gold and black rhodium, create new looks for these classic stones. Sapphire and ruby are actually the same family of stone, with the only difference being different colors of the same crystal formation. The stones often look more natural, less polished, and less formal on their presentation. At Cronier's Jewelry, we are able to take stones from existing pieces and redesign their presentation to look less cocktail or dressy if that is the goal. Also, sometimes the goal is to make something look vintage, and we can do that as well. I took my own personal colored stone ring and replaced the smaller sapphire with a larger smooth cut cabochon aquamarine and added a halo to bring an old piece of jewelry that I loved back to life. Bring us any of your existing jewelry and we will give you "reinvention plans" for them free of charge. The takeaway is that fine jewelry today is less formal, less serious, and being made with a greater freedom with regard to fun and creativity in design.

Who's Behind Two Blessings! Donnie Sasser opened Two Blessings Gift Boutique on April 22, 2013. He enjoys seeing old friends and making new ones, laughing, talking, and getting to know his customers. When asked about his passion for his store, Donnie is quick to respond, “It’s a great feeling at the end of the day to know you’ve made new friends and brightened their day, and that their gift will bring joy to their friends as well.” Donnie strives to help his customers find the perfect gift by listening to his customer’s requests and trying to accommodate them as much as possible. They often suggest lines to carry or desired gifts, and he will search to find these items. Donnie started the business with the support of his family and friends. He is also passionate about sharing a sense of gratitude. Donnie shares his gratitude by saying, “I am thankful to everyone who has supported me through prayer, words of encouragement, and their business, from the time idea was born.” He’s actually had customers come back and say, “Your store name is true! I was so blessed by the gifts I gave to my friends, and they were blessed too!“ Donnie is constantly looking for unique and different items- things you won’t see in other stores in the area. He likes simple gifts that have some meaning, a great story, and a simple message - gifts that inspire both the buyer and the recipient. His favorite gift suggestion is The Year of Gratitude Kit. It’s a great gift to encourage gratitude all year long. How much better could the world be if we actively seek opportunities to say “I am thankful for you” on a daily basis? Do not be surprised if one of the gifts you pick out

is in fact one of Donnie Sasser’s original Faceless Angels and/or Reflection Crosses from The Donnie Sasser Collection, which is featured in hundreds of stores across the country. Donnie says about a customer buying one of his paintings, “It’s nice to meet the buyer, to know a little about the recipient. The story of why they are faceless is on the back of each painting. When someone receives one of these, they often read the story on the back and call or email to buy one for a friend or relative. It’s a unique opportunity to create an original painting. It’s really a complete production cycle with these paintings.” He also features several other local artists. Several years ago, Sherry DeBray gave him opportunity to show his work, The Donnie Sasser Collection. He wanted to do that for other artists as well. Two Blessings Gift Boutique features original works by Jamie Mitchell, Beth Furhman, Susan Parker, and Sally Powell from Birmingham. When asked about owning his own business, Donnie responds, “It’s a great sense of accomplishment owning your own business. You know at the end of the day that the hard work and planning has been a blessing to others.” Two Blessings Gift Boutique is open Monday 105, Tuesday - Friday 10-6, and Saturday 10-5. It is located at 8127 Vaughn Road in the Peppertree Shopping Center. Give Donnie and his staff a call today at 334-647-1745, or better yet visit them for the ultimate gift shopping experience.

Worth A Look

Hair loss in today's society!

by Rebekah Edwards LUSH Makeup Art

Hair loss is very common these days. Most causes are from a number of reasons, and it may be diagnosed with specific reasoning. The most common hair loss is due to breakage. There are some tips and products to help promote healthy hair growth due to breakage: hair supplements are a great way to start the restoration, and can be added to your daily diet routine; Clincure Energizing Nutri-Complex is a great natural supplement with vitamins for thinning hair, also promoting healthy hair, skin, and nails; another treatment is the Invati System by Aveda. The Invati system is a 3-step process that includes: the exfoliating shampoo that removes build-up in the pores and renews the scalp; the thickening conditioner that restores strength, elasticity, and reduces breakage. Finally, the scalp revitalizer helps energize and rehabilitate the scalp. The Invati system is clinically proven to reduce hair loss due to breakage using the power of Densiplex- an invigorating blend of Ayurvedic herb that powers the Invati for best results. Is Invati right for you? It may be for you if your scalp accumulates build up and becomes dry and tight. Hair becomes weak, loss of shine and breaks easily. Hair growth slows with age. Stop by Doug's 2 and speak with an expert today. Invati reduces hair loss due to breakage, in a 12 week clinical test. All products mentioned are available at Doug's 2 Salon-spa
