The village of Finestrat and the beachside resort of Cala Finestrat are both located in the Marina Baixa region on the Costa Blanca Close to neighbouring Benidorm and around 40 kilometres from the city of Alicante and its International Airport. The village nestles on the mountainside of Puig Campana affording wonderful views to the mountains and out to the coast and Mediterranean. The charming village has a typical Moorish feel, with colourfully painted houses and narrow cobbled streets. Cala Finestrat on the other hand has increasingly become more and more popular and its development has made it almost an extension to Benidorm itself.
Finestrat Village The village of Finestrat has retained much of its old school charm, with its Moorish feel and ancient monuments, including the 13th century Castell (Castle) de Finestrat, the 18th century Church of Saint Bartholomew, La Torre (the watch tower) and the Hermitage Crist de Remei. There is a scattering of bars and restaurants servicing typical Mediterranean cuisine and a few shops and amenities. However, close by you have all the amenities and facilities of Cala Finestrat and Benidorm. Cala Finestrat Cala Finestrat is a beach resort located just three kilometres away from busy Benidorm. The resort offers adequate amenities and facilities, a good selection of restaurants, bars and shops. Everything else you need is available in Benidorm, which is easily reached by bus and taxi. Cala Finestrat is suitable for families and couples looking for a relaxed beach resort, yet close to lots of activities and amenities should you desire. During the summer months an arts and crafts market is held on the promenade during the afternoon.

Eating Out Feature
The Sneaky Eater! The Sneaky Eater is an article about different restaurants around our area. The restaurants are not necessarily advertisers in the Little Black Book, and the owners and staff were not aware that the restaurant would be featured, so we can take it that the service would be the same as any customer would receive.
El Castillo Bar Restaurant AL Faz del Pi We have been to this delightful restaurant three times and on each occasion have not been disappointed. The restaurant, offering indoor and outdoor dining, is very tastefully decorated with many arty objects that the owners have collected over the years.

There are two menus both of which offer a broad selection of choices. There is an a la carte menu or menu del dia, the latter being changed every few weeks so there is no danger of getting in a rut. With a good selection of starters, main dishes and sweets there is something for all tastes. The dishes are imaginative, beautifully presented and cooked to an extremely high standard, with the daily menu costing only 17.95â‚Ź it represents fantastic value for money. Worth noting is the willingness of the young owner to share her thoughts with you on your choice of wine, it is, as she says, her passion.

ALBIR Albir is within Alfaz del Pi which is just slightly inland on the other side of the N-322 which divides the two areas. Albir is also referred to as El Albir or L’Albir. It is situated between two international airports, to the south there is Alicante International airport (about 50km) and to the north there is Valencia international airport (about 140km). Albir has a Mediterranean climate which means hot summers with mild winters and very little rain. Albir is blessed with over 300 days of sunshine a year making it an ideal holiday destination pretty much all year round. It is an easy drive from three international airports of Alicante, Valencia and Murcia. Albir’s main beach is called “Playa de Racó de

During the holiday season there are always lifeguards on duty as is the case in all the beach resorts on the Costa Blanca. The blue flag beach also has two play areas on the beach for the children. Villajoyosa Located at the northern end of the Costa Blanca in the Alicante province, Villajoyosa (La Villa Joiosa) is the capital of the Marina Baixa district. The town as it is known today was founded in 1293 by an Admiral who served in the Kingdom of Aragon’s navy. It’s name Villajoyosa, literally means Joyful town. Throughout the centuries Villajoyosa has been an important trade point along this coastline; trading in olive oil, cereals and wine, and shipbuilding, amongst others. But probably what it is most famous for is chocolate. During the 19th century the town started to develop a History chocolate-making industry. Villajoyosa has a rich Because of its trade cultural heritage. It’s history connections, it started as a town dates back to importing cocoa from the 6th century and it Ecuador and Venezuela has been settled by the and the industry grew Greeks, Phoenicians, the and grew. The chocolate Romans and of course the brand, ‘Valor’, which can be Moors, when it actually fell found in most shops and supermarkets throughout into some decline, which Spain comes from is unusual for a Moorish Villajoyosa. occupied town. A delightful and historic town, it stretches the length of a lovely wide, sandy beach, with pretty coloured fishing houses running along the seafront and is encompassed with a backdrop of mountains. Situated around 26 kilometres from the city of Alicante and Alicante International airport, Villajoyosa is a wellsituated destination, ideal for exploring the rest of the Costa Blanca coastline.

Villajoyosa Moors & Christians For eight days, the whole town steps back in time to hold a spectacular re-enactment of a battle fought in 1538. The festival of Moors and Christians is the biggest event of the year in Villajoyosa. The festival has been held for over 250 years in honour of Santa Marta (St. Martha) and commemorates events which occurred in 1538, when Berber pirates led by ZalĂŠ-Arraez tried to attack Villajoyosa. According to legend, St. Martha came to the rescue of the townsfolk by causing a flash flood which wiped out the enemy fleet, thus preventing the corsairs from reaching the coast. To show their gratitude, the town made her its patron saint and hold this annual festival in her honour, the main event being a re-enactment of the Moorish landing. The festivities commence with the fabulous processions of Moors and Christians on 25 and 26 July: The various factions that make up each procession march majestically through the streets to the sound of music. Then, in the early hours of the 28th, the spectacular landing is held. Crowds of people start to arrive at the beach around five in the morning and, while the Christians make ready their artillery to defend the shore, Page 30
over 30 Moorish vessels approach the coastline. Once they have landed, both armies battle it out until they reach the foot of the castle, which is eventually taken by the Moors. In the afternoon, the Christian soldiers come back and retake the castle: first of all, they try to persuade the enemy to surrender, but after some unsuccessful negotiations, a great battle ensues ending in the defeat of the Moors, who are symbolically sent back to the sea.
Villajoyosa is brimming over with fun and merriment during these festivities. There are also many activities to enjoy, such as gastronomic competitions, open-air dances, firework displays and music concerts. Moors and Christians is a popular festival in many parts of Spain and each place has its own original way of celebrating, depending on their particular history and tradition. The re-enactment of the landing is unique to Villajoyosa and sets it apart from all other festivals of its kind.
