This will be our last week for sterilizing for this year, as we all need a well deserved break. I need to thank everyone who has contributed in any way, towards our Sterilization Project. Together we managed to sterilize a total of 506 dogs & cats from the poorer communities - mostly in New Horizons, since January this year. With an
average of 5 puppies per litter, we have prevented almost 25 000 puppies from being born in this year alone. This is a major accomplishment and we all need to be very proud to have achieved this. Grateful thanks to everyone who regularly donates their jumble to the Charity Shop. This is the only way we can generate funds, to continue with this much needed project. It is really so important that we have the funds available for the next year, as I intend completing Kwano and Qolweni next. Please pop into the Charity Shop when in search of Christmas Gifts. We really are very well stocked and there is something for everyone! I need to thank the Print Shop Team and Bitou News for always inserting my Snippets, the Vets for helping, Smart Alarms for monitoring at no charge, Christy from Showme for the lovely website, and everyone who has put our Charity on the top of their list. DOGS ON LEASHES May I add my pennyworth to this debate. 1. I have made a dog lead 25 metres long and it works well. 2. Drive around New Horizons, Kranshoek and Kwano and phone the Municipality with each and every dog not on a lead and wait for the "Law officers" to arrive. They will have to double their law officers to deal with these cases and open a pound to impound all of these dogs as well as goats and pigs. 3. Do not pay the fine but contest this stupid municipal "fund raising" by taking it to court. The courts will be so gutvol that they will eventually drop the charges as it wastes the overworked courts valuable time of prosecuting the real criminals of this town.. Seatbelts When I am stopped at a roadblock, at which the SAP are always in attendance, I am charged for not wearing a seatbelt. Has anyone ever seen the SAP wearing seatbelts? The story of their having to exit their vehicles in a hurry does not wash! Are all the Bitou municipal vehicle drivers also exempt from wearing seatbelts? Shoppers at Market Square were treated with entertainment of a high standard as the centre hosted a Battle Of The Bands on Monday 29 November. What a good hype to start the festive season as bands from different corners of Plett battled it out for a place in the finals on Wednesday 1st December where the fight is on for the no. 1 spot. Among the competitors were The Kiffness, two brothers based in town and who define their music as electronic 8 bit as they play drums, keyboard and trumpet on top of backing tracks; Unlimited Band from Wittedrift as usual did not disappoint as Donavan and Priscilla Hart impressed the audience with their sweet voices while performing Beauty & The Beast and Stuck On You. There was also a very talented and experienced gentleman from Kranshoek. His stage presence is phenomenal. Reuben Prinz has been around the world performing in England, Greece, France, Spain etc; Ben Badenhorst a guitarist who mix elements of jazz, maskhand and Indian music wowed the crowd, followed by Nicotee from Kwanokuthula who gave the audience a great township experience performing kwaito songs called “Let’s stop abuse them” and “I’m writing as if”. Another group that impressed me was Justified that played drums, guitar and a keyboard while playing songs called Just The Way You Are and instrumental filly’s groove. All the above bands are in the finals. The winners will take home R5 000 and runners up R3 000. By the time you read this article the winners will be already been announced “may the best band win the battle” Yedwa Mayila

Southern Right Whales (SRW) Identification
Recently a small study was done to identify individual SRW’s in Plett. The whales were identified using head shots taken by ORCA Foundation and Centre for Dolphin Studies volunteers. Each SRW has its own pattern of callosities (white patches) on its head. Knowing this, the photos were catalogued into left and right head shots and within that the number of callosities on the top of the head and jaw lines. With this information the individual whales could be identified. After identifying individuals over a period of time it was possible to see how often individual whales visit Plettenberg Bay. The boat permit system tariffs for boat owners making use of the Keurbooms River Estuary and the Keurbooms River near Plettenberg Bay, have been adapted to that of other conservation organizations. Those with current 2010 boat permits will be valid until the 31st of December 2010. Other changes are also applicable in terms of the Merchant Shipping Regulations (National small vessel safety), regulations 2007 as amended. All users of inland water, such as the Keurbooms Estuary, will be required to adhere to the SAMSA regulations regarding boat safety. In order to purchase a boat permit and gain access to the Keurbooms River, it will be necessary to be in possession of a SAMSA boat registration number and a SAMSA certificate of competence for the operator. Power driven vessels with motors up to 15hp and their skippers are exempted from these regulations, but the safety gear for protected waters must still be on board and boats must still be in possession of a valid boat permit. The registration of boats can be done at any SAMSA office or by any Safety Officer that has been appointed by SAMSA. For information regarding your nearest South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) officer or safety officer, please contact the SAMSA office at 044 690 4201. During the last couple of festive seasons it was observed that very few residents visit the respective Municipal offices between Christmas and New Year. Those that visit the offices do so mainly to enquire about service accounts or to report service failures and problems. The opinion is offered that the majority of offices can be closed from MONDAY 27 December to FRIDAY 31 December 2010 without hampering service delivery in any way. Essential services sections cannot close. Other sections such as the Income section, Customer care section, Building control and Town planning sections will have a skeleton staff in attendance during the said period. The essential services sections of the Departments of Community Services and Municipal Services & Infrastructure Department will be fully staffed and operational. For Born in Africa Christmas has come early this year…. .and our gift is our
brand new bus! Yes faithful readers, thanks to the Rotary foundation this dream has come true. As you all know BIA was established approximately eight years ago. At that stage we had only a few children in the program. Thanks to all our wonderful sponsors we have now grown to 450 children with a whole range of educational camps, holiday programs and other projects. 2011 will be our second year supporting tertiary students studying in various cities across SA. When we are able to do so, we arrange additional outings and excursions for our children, parents and staff. Now, over the last 8 years we have been doing all the above with one 16 seater bus. You can imagine the logistical nightmares, wasted time and endless driving our little bus has endured. Two years ago we put our thinking caps on with regards to purchasing a second bus. After many months of strategy planning,
phone calls, endless amounts of paperwork, our dream team, consisting of Mrs, Joan Hussiksson of Rotary Knysna, Dr Reinard Schydlo of Dusseldorf Schlossturm, Mr. Raymond De Craecker from Antwerpen-Amerloo and Remi and Lieve De Backer of BIA tackled the project which was done by means of the Rotary International Matching grant. Many of you Rotarians will understand this lengthy process, but voila, at last our brand new bus was handed over to Isabelle De Smul at a Rotary gathering in Knysna on the beautiful summer eve of 23 November 2010. Many international Rotarians attended as well as Rotary Knysna who played a strategic role in the project. The international clubs who donated funds were Rotary Dusseldorf, ElslooMaaskant, Antwerpen and Districts 1870 & 2170. We would like to extend thanks to all folk and organizations involved. So many more children can be reached & so many new projects can be accomplished.
