Spring seems to have decided to withdraw her summery demeanor and has slipped back into winter mode. One can never say what kind of weather will happen in a single day in Plett. We often experience all four seasons. It is the Bay of many surprises as well as beauty. The mountains each day seem different as do the magic sunrises. And aren’t all our lives a little like that ... sunshine, rain, storms and new beginnings. And most of the time we’re not sure when what will happen, but as we enjoy the sunshine and weather the storms life stays interesting. Have another wonderful week in our beautiful Bay

It follows a young man, recently widowed, who specialises in stealing ideas from people's dreams. He is now offered a lucrative job: the chance to do the opposite and instead to plant some ideas in the target's mind, while he is asleep. He assembles a team to help him, but they encounter unexpected challenges leading to lots of action. At the time of writing, the film comes in at number 3 on the IMDB's Top 250 CAST: Leondardo DiCaprio, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ellen Page, Tom Hardy, Ken Watanabe, Dileep Rao, Cillian Murphy
SHREK – FOREVER AFTER Shrek has settled down to married life with Fiona. The triplets are a year old now, and life has become a boring routine. Rumpelstilskin offers Shrek some hope: a return to his carefree days, in return for one day of Shrek's life. Unfortunately Rumpelstilskin picks the day Shrek was born, meaning he does not exist, and no one knows him. With only one day to get a kiss from Fiona to break the spell, Shrek has his work cut out convincing his friends that they are his friends. Voices of Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz, Antonia Banderas, Julie Andrews, Jon Hamm, John Cleese, Craig Robinson
GROWN UPS - A crowd-pleasing comedy. The cast is packed with big comedy names, and the setup has five buddies who won a tournament back in high school, reuniting at the scene of their victory. As luck would have it, the team they beat all those years ago is also there. The guys are now mature, in assorted relationships, and spend the time talking about the past and dealing with their partners and kids. CAST: Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Chris Rock, David Spade, Rob Schneider, Salma Hayek, Maria Bello, Maya Rudolph, Joyce Van Patten, Ebony JoAnn, Di Quon

(For Immediate Release) Sea Rescue th – National – Saturday, 04 September, 2010. WARNING – Shark activity close in-shore (Plettenberg Bay surfers exit the water in a hurry): Following reports from 4 surfers, who exited the water in a hurry this morning after a shark, believed to be about 5 metres in length, appeared to harass them, while they were surfing at Lookout Beach, Plettenberg Bay, about 150 metres off-shore, in the wave-line, the NSRI and Save Our Seas Foundation are again urging surfers, bathers and paddlers to exercise caution in our waters as at this time of the year sharks are known to migrate closer in-shore foraging for food. Research conducted by the Save Our Seas Foundation shows that there is a normal migration of sharks closer in-shore in their search for food at this time of the year. Matt O’Carrol, from Plettenberg Bay, (Matt grew up in Camps Bay), a regular surfer, said that he and three other surfers, one from Plettenberg Bay, one from Knysna and one from Cape Town, were surfing “Lookout” when the shark, suspected by the surfers to be a Bull Shark or a Zambezi Shark, approached them in the wave line. The other three surfers caught the next wave in but Matt, who was surfing further out found his path to the beach blocked by the shark but he eventually also managed to get safely to shore. Matt said he believed that the shark had appeared to be chasing them out of the water! No one was injured. The NSRI and Save Our Seas Foundation continue to urge surfers, bathers and paddlers to be cautious in the water.

Soccer lives on in Plettenberg Bay
The Plett Football Association and Plettenberg Bay have been selected to host the Western Cape Regional Beach Soccer Trials . This event will be held on Central Beach this Sunday, 12 September 2010, from 10h00 onwards. The six Southern Cape teams, Plettenberg Bay, Mossel Bay, Knysna, George, Oudtshoorn and Hessequa will be battling it out on the day to secure a place in the national finals. The three teams representing the Western Cape will travel to Durban to participate in the National Beach Soccer Trials to be held in Durban on 14 and 15 September. According to Bitou Mayor, Alderman Lulama Mvimbi , it is a great honour for Plettenberg Bay to host an event of this magnitude. “We’re really looking forward to watching these players in action for a fun-filled day of beach sports. We’d like to invite our local communities to come out in support of their various teams and cheer them on to a place in the national trials.” Furthermore this is an excellent opportunity to show that we can also host the 2010/11 beach soccer league successfully.

Conservation Corner Snares
Snare hunting is becoming more of a problem in recent years. This method of trapping is used not only to hunt for food, such as bush buck and bush pig, for towns people. The snares inadvertently catch endangered wild cats such as caracal and serval. These cats are sometimes targeted also to prevent livestock being eaten. A new project started by Tenikwa wildlife awareness centre aims to remove the snares from forested areas in attempt to reduce the deaths of wild cats and other smaller animals. If you wish to have snares removed from your land or wish to learn other methods of livestock protection please contact Len at Tenikwa on 044 534 8170. FOR SALE BMW dolphin Shape. 1996 model. A kick-start to Spring
The Wittedrift High Choir, a dedicated and self-practicing group of learners, brought joy to the Formosa Garden Village on their annual Spring Day Tea. From leaving the school gates, there was much excitement in the air. The journey was filled with melodious sounds. (it certainly was the best sounding “taxi” in Plett!) Once in the hall, the choir performed a number of songs (with encores of course) which brought tears to a few of the audience members’ eyes as well as to the singers themselves. The grade 2’s and 3’s from Witedrift Primary also blessed many hearts as they brought flowers for the audience and sang their much practiced song appropriately called, “Dis Lente.” Muffins, cupcakes, crunchies, sausage rolls and many other delicious teats were baked by learners from the high school and were enjoyed by all. It truly was a great way to start spring, and we as Wittedrift feel privileged to be able to bring joy to others. Kate Maclean ADSL, need to connect? For Birdwatchers
Walking on Robberg Beach recently, I was amazed to see a strong black bird, approx. the size of a sea-gull, expertly surfing the waves, all the way from Solar Beach to Robberg. Enquiring at Cape Nature, Henk Niewoudt explained that it must have been a White Chinned Petrel (procellaria aequinoctalis), birds related to the albatross. These petrels lived in the southern ocean and used Marion Island for breeding. He had recently been out to sea and had encountered some of these birds; they very seldom ventured as far north as our shores, maybe once in ten years. They being rather heavy, flying off the water needed some effort - they are known to use the up-swell of waves as a “launching pad”. Sleeping was done floating in the water. I feel very privileged having been able to witness this birds wonderful surfing performance. G. Daniells. FOR SALE, Galvanized full size roof-rack for Chana Bakkie, any cash offer. call 083 324 2114

Wolf Sanctuary welcomes orphans and vulnerable children for fun on the farm! Providing homes for more than just wolves, this is the most beautiful little farm with goats, sheep, donkey, horses, pigs, ducks, emus, chickens, bunnies, and more! Most of these animals were rescued and now are given proper care and homes! This is really parallel to the lives of the abandoned and orphaned children here in the Plett area. Most of these children have never had such a large place to run free and play, or the opportunity to interact with so many lovely farm animals. The old tractor was a big attraction as our little ones enjoyed make believe driving! The trampoline and jungle gym brought Big smiles. All the kids appreciate this lovely time of fun and play at the farm! Thanks from Michelle and kids of POHA

Chris Kruger and his staff treated us to an amazing outing, giving us an educational and fun day! We were able to walk with the elephants, feed them, and examine even the smallest details up close like smooth skin behind the ears, strong hairs of the tail, and rough soles of their feet! The playground was also a big hit as we enjoyed our snacks and played. Thank you Chris! WORK FROM Home: Delightful home with 3 bedrooms, study, lounge, family room, kitchen and enclosed garden. ADVERT RE MACAW PARROTS A SCAM There was an ad in the What’s New for 2 macaw parrots being sold by Larry. I believe this man’s real name is Lukman Olawale Shutti and I believe he is a con-artist swindling people out of their money. I believe their are no birds and he is advertising all over the country to gain money! I contact him last week re the birds, deposited R5000.00 into his bank account and when I went out to the Hartebeespoort dam to collect on Saturday I discovered that he does not exist and the address was not his! As of Saturday he also does not answer my cell calls and refuses to respond to my e-mail! Regards, Franky

What a profound little paragraph...
stated way back in 1931 & still says it all
"You cannot legislate the poor into freedom by legislating the wealthy out of freedom. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friend, is about the end of any nation. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it." ~~~~ Dr. Adrian Rogers, 1931

A short history of the van Rooyens of Plettenberg Bay
(part 1) Jan van Rooyen (“first of the Van Rooyen clan to settle in Plettenberg Bay”) bought his own land in Plettenberg Bay in 1810. The bicentenary of this event will be celebrated by his descendants, and other van Rooyens currently living in Plettenberg Bay, on Heritage Day 2010. This is the first of FOUR weekly essays and covers the period between 1713, when the founder of the South African branch of van Rooyen family arrived in Cape Town, and 1810. Although most of the descendants are Afrikaans speaking, the essays are in English, for the benefit of many of the readers of What’s New in Plett. Cornelis van Rooyen (Van Rooijen, Van Roijen), of Gorcum in the Netherlands, departed from Zeeland on the 14th October 1713 on the ship “Middelwoud” in service of the VOC (Dutch East India Company) as Adelborst (military sea officer’s rank) and arrived during 1714 at the Cape. He married the first of THREE wives (the last TWO were widows) in Drakenstein (now Paarl) in 1720 and she was the mother of all his children. He sold his farm “Nabygelegen” near Wellington in 1741 and thereafter was member of the first “Heemraad” of Roodezand (now Tulbagh) established as court in 1743 for the inhabitants of that area. One of his sons, Gerrit (born in 1732), was a Gamtoos River farmer. Gerrit’s son Petrus Hendrik
(born 1767) is the Field Cornet of the Long Kloof, referred to in the last part of this essay. His youngest son, Cornelis (born in 1737) was a burger of Swellendam and so was Cornelis’ son Jan (born in 1771 and baptised Johannes, the same name that was given to his older brother, who probably died before his birth). At this stage the Cape was still “Hollands”. In 1778 Governor van Plettenberg of the VOC visited the bay, which is still carrying his name. Cornelis Botha was found to be the only farmer of substance (his farm is shown on a 1777 map) and woodcutters of the VOC provided Captain Francois Duminy with THREE wives (the last TWO were widows) in Drakenstein (now Paarl) in 1720 and she was the mother of all his children. Gerrit’s son Petrus Hendrik (born 1767) is the Field Cornet of the Long Kloof, referred to in the last part of this essay. farmer of substance (his farm is shown on a 1777 map) and woodcutters of the VOC provided Captain Francois Duminy with the first load of timber, which was shipped on De Meermin in 1788. On 18 Jun 1795 the Cape district of Swellendam revolted against Dutch East India Company rule (colloquially called the "Swellendam Republic") but in Nov 1795 the area was re-incorporated into the Cape Colony, now under British rule (the first British occupation was at the request of the Prince of Orange). The first wave of terror from the Black-cum-Hottentot marauders hit the Long Kloof in July 1799 and spilled over the mountains to Knysna and Plettenberg Bay. During the series of attacks in1802 one party decided to flee westwards. They were ambushed at “Die Poort” (between Plettenberg Bay and Knysna) and Hendrik Heyns, Guillaum Wolfaart and the young Cornelis Botha (aged 24) died. They were all farmers from Piesang River. The women were held for ransom, but eventually all survived. The Field Cornet of the Long Kloof, P. H. van Rooyen and a commando of 10 men joined another and exterminated the attackers. The Heyns and Wolfaart families shortly afterwards disappeared from the Piesang valley and Plettenberg Bay and old Cornelis Botha died. During 1803 (the beginning of Batavian rule) De Mist visited and in1806 the British occupied the Cape for the 2nd time. The scene was set for Jan van Rooyen (see part 2 next week)

SOCCER LIVES ON IN PLETTENBERG BAY The Plett Football Association and Plettenberg Bay have been selected to hosts the Western Cape Regional Beach Soccer Trials. This event will be held on Central Beach this Sunday, 12 September 2010, from 10h00 onwards. The six teams Southern Cape team are Plettenberg Bay, Mossel Bay, Knysna, George, Oudtshoorn and Hessequa and will be battling it out on the day to secure a place in the national finals. The three teams representing the Western Cape will travel to Durban to participate in the National Beach Soccer Trials to be held in Durban on 14 and 15 September. According to Bitou Mayor, Alderman Lulama Mvimbi, it is a great honour for Plettenberg Bay to host an event of this magnitude. Remember to put on your alarm. There are people going around trying to ask for old gold etc. Please call the police if you see them as they will often scope Your premises for weak points. There is no other real big news this week. Please speak to your local security company and find out about Your options to arm your gardens. A reminder call if you see job seekers in your areas, Any strange activities we can only help if we know about it. Letter via the Editor OUR ROLE AS YOUNG PEOPLE IN SOCIETY Young people of today are no less to the generation of 1976, Young people have played a pivotal role in the struggle for the liberation of African and black people in particular from both the economical and socio – political bondages. Since the arrival of the settlers in 1652 through to the Bambatha rebellion, through to Prixley Ka Seme down to Mandela and O.R Tambo. This continued to the generations of Biko through to the generation of Chule KK Papiyane. It further continued to the generation of Peter Mokaba through to the generation of Fikile Mbalula and Xola Nene, wanga Sigila, sibusiso Zuma and Claude Qavane. Wanga Sigila,Sibusiso Zuma and Claude Qavane. Wanga Sigila,Sibusiso Zuma and Claude Qavane. All the above young Turks, have continued to help shape the revolution that defined the soul of youth development in South Africa. All of them have seen youth development as an integral part of the continuing struggle to liberate Africans in particular and Blacks in general. This was understood to be the backbone towards the betterment of all the people of South Africa Black and white. The 1976 generation like today’s generation, was faced by poverty leading to starvation, illiteracy and racial oppression. Like us they were faced by the inequalities in education, gender and in the economy. Like us the 1976 generation fought a battle to transform education to deliver complete individuals who will contribute not only to nation building but also to the development WHAT'S NEW IN PLETT – 9 SEPTEMBER 2010
of young people and the South African people at large. Like us the 1976 generation was challenged by access to health care services and housing. Even today young people are still fighting a bitter battle of ensuring that child headed house holds can by law get government RDP housing. Our generations cannot be named and shamed by words such as “doom” and “lost”. We are not a lost generation and we remain a solid generation faced by additional challenges to those of 1976 and generations before 1976. Ours is a generation that continues to see youth development as an integral part of the national liberation process driven through the National Democratic Revolution. Like generations before us, ours is the generation of gallant young revolutionaries that are the back borne of South African struggle for freedom, peace, stability and justice For those prophets that have taken unto them to define who we are and what we want, its time to listen to us about whom we really are and what we crave. We are a generation filled with the love of its own people and its country. We are a generation concerned with the content and form of education we receive. We are a generation that fights poverty and starvation. A generation that provides service to its country and its people through volunteering and participation in community based initiatives. Of course we are a generation confronted by challenges of the past which were escaped by those prophets of doom. We are a generation that has to deal with the scourge of HIV/AIDS, with teenage pregnancy, drug and substance abuse. We are a generation confronted by the growing rate of population leading to many children and young people not having access to univer-
sal primary education. A generation confronted by high rate of unemployment. We are a unique generation of youth that is faced with challenges of bringing social cohesion. A generation at the coal face of fighting for socialisation of the economy to collectively benefit the majority peoples of our beloved country. Yes, we are a generation that loves kwaito music whether it’s Ntando, Zola or not. We love it because it depicts the real stories of life of young people in South Africa. Equally we should not be blamed for the choices of entertainment we make due to the failure of such prophets to associate. We are a generation that engages in social activities in an endeavour to bridge the gap between generations and in an endeavour to build a nation through social cohesion. If this is wrong therefore continue to label us. We are a generation that is engaged in an effort to dismantle a conundrum that undermines social change. We are born free of racial divide, xenophobia and Nazism. We are a generation born free of child and women abuse. Young people of Bitou lets play our meaning full role in society , lets continue to fight for our space because this is our time. Our future will be determined by us . So lets build our future through community activism. Writing in personal capacity PHAKIE MBALI - 0718575084

Letter via the Editor THIEF, THIEF, THIEF..... On Thursday afternoon, a woman came in to THE HAPPY SHOPPE looking for goodies for a sixtieth birthday. She was accompanied by her son who was VERY muscular and two children, a boy and girl between the ages of 7 and 9 dressed in a local Primary Schools clothes. Hey, didn't you notice your small son walking out with a toy and not paying for it??? Surely when you got home you must have realized that the boy had a NEW toy that you didn't pay for??? Don't you think the right thing to do was to bring the boy in and to apologize, therefore also teaching him that stealing is WRONG!!!!!!!!!!! What type of mother are you?
