Die nuwe skooljaar vir 2011 het begin en vir baie van die nuwe Graad R tot Graad 2tjies was dit ‘n wonderlike en uitdagende ervaring. Du Rand vir Graad 7-9 en Mej. C. Links vir Graad 6, aangestel. Die opvoeders was tydens byeenkoms in die skoolsaal ‘n voorspoedige jaar by die skool toegewens.

A BUSY 2010 FOR TENIKWA REHABILITATION CENTRE
Tenikwa’s Rehabilitation Centre has been really busy over the last year with an influx of penguin’s and lots of injured or abandoned wildlife. Our Rehabilitation Centre is quite unique in that we accept Marine as well as Terrestrial animals and birds. Of the 260 creatures admitted in 2010, we treated a variety of species such as Duikers, Blacked backed Jackal pups, Caracal Cubs, Bat Eared Foxes, a Pole Cat which we nicknamed “Domino”, Brown Hooded Kingfishers, Knysna Loeries, Black backed Gulls, Penguins and even a yearling sub-Antartic Seal and a newly born Cape Fur Seal. We were privileged to treat & release a rare ‘Ludwig’s Bustard’ which was found in Plettenberg Bay. One of the tragedies we witnessed was a Serval caught in a gintrap which we tried to treat but it later had to be euthanized by our vet due to the extent of it’s injuries. Servals have been extinct in the Western
Cape for 17 years, and for a brief flash in time, history was reversed until once again man intervened.

We have had a high success rate with treating our Rehabilitation patients especially when they are brought to us timeously by the community and as many as 133 have been safely released back into nature during 2010. The friendly little bush pig ‘Snorkey’ who was destined for the pot, was released at Amakhala Game Reserve where he promptly made himself at home at one of their 5 star lodges before being banished to an uninhabited section of the reserve and is now ‘best friends’ with a Black Rhino.
Our monthly animal clinics in Kurland Village have received remarkable support from the community and we have seen a definite improvement in the overall condition of the animals and compassion shown by their owners. Tenikwa sponsored 2 successful Sterilization Clinics last year in the village where 173 township animals were sterilised. We are grateful to the local vets from Plett & Knysna for their support in this regard.
Last year we rehabilitated 64 African Penguins and most of these were successfully released through both SAMREC in Port Elizabeth and SANCCOB in Cape Town. African Penguin populations have plummeted over the last 4 years and their status has recently been upgraded to ‘Endangered’. Without an urgent and collective intervention by conservation bodies, Rehabilitation Centres and the community we may see Penguins become extinct in the wild in the next 5 years. Rehabilitating Caracals which have been displaced from the wild, remains one of our priorities and the biggest challenge is to find safe places for them to return to the wild. Our school children program for this year included several snare sweeps on vacant land to combat the continuous depletion of our wildlife through bush meat trade. Through our Awareness Centre, which is open to the Public, we continue to raise awareness about threats facing the wildlife in the Garden Route, much of this man made and give our community and visitors the opportunity to see the Indigenous Cats of South Africa . CONGRATULATIONS CRAGS 2010 GRADE 12 LEARNERS!
Above: Leslie-Ann Camphor, Norman Malatji & Carli Julies What a great achievement from 2010 matriculates from Crags and Plettenberg Bay area, with the Witterdrift High School 100 % pass rate, 59 % exemptions, 39 % Distensions and this what the principal: Mr. Andre’ Bouwer has to say “ We are very blessed for the student that dedicated themselves and worked hard, students from the Crags are wonderful children. I would like to thank Born In Africa, Bitou 10 Foundation and Michael and Nicole from the Learning Centre for the outstanding work in equipping young people” Plettenberg Bay Secondary achieved 81.1 % with 13 Exemptions and 43 Diploma candidates. Mr. Selwyn Bowers – the principal was very pleased with the students achievement and said “It’s amazing what we can achieve if Teacher’s, Students and Parents work together towards one goal, well done”. This is what 3 of the Kurland Village students Leslie-Ann Camphor, Norman Malatji & Carli Julies that achieved outstanding results have to say “We are very excited about their future and it was not easy but with hard work, determination and support from our Parents and families we were able to make them proud” what excited me most was the fact that they
knew what they want to become and the challenges lying ahead. Leslie-Ann wants to study Law, Norman - Information Technology and Carli wants to be a Doctor, with their great results, enthusiasm and determination anything is possible. They had this to say to some of the young people in our community “The young people must not give up and always try to do their best, with God anything is possible and always try to do your best in everything, in order to achieve great results is to sacrifice some of the activities that you enjoy and dedicate your time on your studies”. The community need to realize the only to financial freedom is to invest in the future of our children and remember if the is no youth then the is no future. Masizakhe Members would like to congratulate those who pass their exams and matriculants, wish them all the best way forward. To those who didn’t make it we would like to encourage them to go back and try again.
