ANNUAL KURLAND VILLAGE CLEAN UP A SUCCESS
It is commonly accepted that our Garden Route’s tourism dependent economy is based on the unique environmental features that attract increasing numbers of visitors to the region. The integrity of the environment is possibly being taken for granted by many living amidst this beauty but a failure to preserve it will eventually reduce the visitor flow, the economy and employment. The Kurland Community has been involved in Ocean Conservancy and Plastic Federation of South Africa’s annual International Coastal Clean-up initiative for many years and this year’s was marked by a massive jump in profile. On Friday 16th September, Vernon Gibbs -Hall, Environmental Control, Office of the
Eden District Municipality, visited Kurland Village to address the Crags Primary School learners and community members participating in this years clean up. He stressed that littering is not only unsightly and unhealthy but that residue elements leech into soils and water systems with long term adverse effects. Participants were encouraged to not only take responsibility for keeping their immediate space clean and tidy but also to educate others in this message to cr eat e a snow ball ef f ect. The cleaning teams took to the open spaces and streets and by the end of the session had collected a truck load of waste that the Municipality disposed of.

A light lunch and soft drinks sponsored by Coca Cola Fortunes, Pick and Pay and Hunters Hotel Group were provided to all participants who also were eligible for lucky draw prices donated by Coca Cola Fortunes, Rip Curl, The Natures Valley Trust, Birds of Eden and Monkeyland. Thanks also go to members of the Redford Road and Southern Crags Conservancies, Dollars for Change, Willing Workers in South Africa, Born in Africa, Food for Waste and Tenikwa for their valued assistance in support logistics and preparing the midday refreshments. Daniël Cloete, Programme Director for the Nature’s Valley Trust, the local coordinator of the annual Kurland cleanup day said that the Nature’s Valley Trust is proud to be involved with a community that has fully embraced their role and responsibility in keeping their environment clean and healthy not only for them to live and work in but also so that the future inhabitants of the area can enjoy the same privilege. Each learner was issued with a sling pack, lunch box and pencil case donated by The Department of Environmental Affairs & Development Planning. These will act as a constant reminder to the participants of their role to play in environmental protection. Crags Times Page 1

NEWS FROM TENIKWA ANIMAL REHABILITATION CENTRE! otters can become a problem as the ducks are likely to fall prey to the otter. Molluscs such as mussels are also eaten occasionally and the otter smashes these open on rocks. The Cape Clawless Otter searches by sight for prey in clear water, but it also uses its fingers to feel in the mud to search for prey. The fingers are very dextrous and sensitive, and like humans, they can be left or right handed and this can be seen when the otter feeds. One of the common signs that indicate a Cape Clawless Otter lives in an area is the presence of latrine sites where multiple dung deposits can be seen full of crushed crab shells and fish bones.
Cape Clawless otter We received a Cape Clawless Otter from Cape Nature on the 28/08/11. It was very weak , de-hydrated and hungry on arrival. Our animal keepers worked very hard to make him comfortable for his Rehabilitation program period. She is battling to use her hind legs but it did improve a lot since she arrived. She enjoys a good amount of fish a day and is picking up a lot of weight. Cape Clawless Otters can weigh up to around 25Kg and she weighed less than 7kg. They also have broad heads with muscular necks. Their fur is thick and can vary in colour from a dark chocolate brown to a pale tan, with the chest, chin and cheeks being white or slightly offwhite. Their paws have un-webbed fingers and toes. Cape Clawless Otters are diurnal (active during the day) but will also hunt on moonlit nights. During hot weather they are generally inactive during the hottest part of the day. During the night and the hottest part of the day they rest up in their holts (resting places). These are usually sheltered holes under rocks, in reed beds or in dry gullies. Cape Clawless Otters are very playful and agile, and are excellent swimmers. They often slide down mud banks into the water. Unlike other African Otter species the Cape Clawless Otter spends a considerable amount of time out of the water and often wanders several kilometres away from the water particularly when searching for a new habitat. The Cape clawless otter’s distribution, which is closely associated with water systems, extends from Senegal in the west, to Ethiopia in the northeast, and south to South Africa. Cape Clawless Otters Eat Fish, freshwater crabs, frogs, reptiles, small and medium sized mammals, ducks and the eggs of crocodiles or ground nesting birds. Where farmers keep free range domestic ducks then the
Conservation Status: Like most other otter species, the cape clawless otter was once hunted for its fur. However, this species is mainly threatened by deforestation, occurring throughout Africa. Habitat loss has resulted in the decline of cape clawless otter sightings, which warrants this animal as rare.
Sterilization Clinic We also want to let everybody in Kurland know that we will be passing by each house next week for registrations for the Vaccination Program as well as Sterilization of all the dogs in Kurland. As soon as we reach our target of 100+ registrations for the Sterilization Clinic we will give you an exact date.
Tenikwa Special Guests We had very interesting visitors last week called “the Wild Cat Group”. The Wild Cat Group joined us for a full day program and they are currently doing some research for Purina about the African Wild Cat. They spend the whole day here studying our cats. One of the team members were also from National Geographic who took some amazing photos of the African Wild Cat for their website. The African Wild Cat is not so much endangered through the lack of habitat loss, but through inbreeding with domestic and feral cat populations. The African Wild Cat is slightly larger and longer legged that it’s domestic counterpart and has black paws and underside to the legs.

Gr 5 & 6 Eco -Warrior Camp Who would have thought that a penguin would have attended a BIA camp? Well say no more, because that is exactly how the Born in Africa EcoWarrior camp ended off. Raymond the rescue penguin joined Tenikwa in educating the 62 pupils from Kranshoek, Crags, W itt edri ft , New Horizon and Harkerville during the weekend of 19-21 August 2011. As usual the girls kicked of with building team spirit in making their flags and shouting their war-cries. The Saturday was spent exploring the intricate eco -system of the Groot River, before a fun afternoon arranged by Nature’s Valley trusts’ Cindy-Lee at the Lagoon. No camp is complete without a treasure hunt and this was done at the Phil Martin botanical gardens. The girls also hosted a fashion show where they designed dressed made with recyclable materials and strutted their stuff on the catwalk under the African stars! To celebrate International year of the forest Tenikwa donated five indigenous trees which were planted by the girls in the Vasselot camp site. Well done to all who attended and for keeping the spirit alive.

Boys Eco-Warrior camp The howling wind could not scare the 47 brave Born in Africa eco warriors during the weekend of 2 - 4 September 2011. Our boys from Kranshoek, Crags and Wittedrift had a rip-roaring time while learning more about the wonders of Mother Nature. After completing a 15 km hike through the indigenous forests they built sand castles to their hearts contact while soaking up the sun. The group also met Raymond the penguin from Tenikwa Wildlife Sanctuary and his message was clearLook after this planet, its all we have! Well done boys and thanks to the BIA team, Cindy-Lee of Nature’s Valley Trust, Mac of WWISA, Richmond of SANPARKS and Peter Wilson of Loredo Farms.

FIRE DEPARTMENT FIRE SAFETY TIPS Paraffin should always be handled with extreme care, as it is poisonous and can cause severe illness, even death if it is swallowed. It can burn your skin even if unlit. Paraffin is often sold in containers contaminated with chemicals such as petrol, or even purposely mixed with volatile fuels such as methylated spirits. This can cause it to flare dangerously or even explode. Paraffin can cause severe burns, and paraffin stoves that are knocked over or explode are a major cause of injuries and fires in informal settlements. Paraffin also emits harmful fumes when ignited. What can you do to prevent paraffin accidents? Fires and burns - prevention: Never leave a paraffin appliance unattended. It only takes a second for a gust of wind, pet or child to knock over a light or stove
use. Never store paraffin in a used milk or cool drink bottle as a child could mistakenly drink it. When pouring paraffin, use a funnel, not a cup. Children could think that because paraffin is poured from a cup it is safe to drink Keep children away from paraffin appliances and make sure that there’s en o ug h fr es h air to pr ev ent them breathing in dangerous fumes Poisoning - treatment: Paraffin is poisonous. Never let a child drink any. They could become very ill, even die. If a child accidentally swallows paraffin, do not give them anything to eat or drink. Get the child medical attention as soon as possible . Never try to make someone who has drunk paraffin vomit. This could force the paraffin into the lungs and cause serious damage.
Make sure paraffin appliances are on a flat, firm surface. Do not put a cloth under a paraffin appliance. A child or pet could pull the trailing end and the cloth will then burn, helping to fuel the fire
By following these few simple hints, you can help prevent and treat paraffin incidents. You can also assist Paraffin Safety by sharing this information with friends, family and colleagues – it could help save someone’s life.
Always have a bucket of sand nearby when using a paraffin appliance. Water will not put out a paraffin fire and can make matters worse by spreading the flames. Paraffin fires can only be extinguished using sand or a fire extinguisher .
KURLAND HOTEL WINS PLATINUM AT DINERS CLUB 2011 WINELIST AWARD
Keep lighters and matches away from children and never store paraffin near matches, lighters or lit paraffin appliances Fires and burns - treatment: If your clothing catches fire, drop to the ground and roll to put out the flames. Running around will make matters worse If someone else is on fire, roll them in a blanket or jacket. This will prevent air getting to the fire and will extinguish it If someone has been burned, pour cold water onto the burn very gently and get him or her to a doctor, clinic or hospital immediately If the burn is over a large area keep the person warm as there is a serious risk they will go into shock. Get them medical attention as quickly as possible. If you spill paraffin, remove any clothing it has spilt on and wash the skin with soap and water. Paraffin can burn your skin even when it is not lit Poisoning - prevention: Do not leave children unsupervised and make sure they understand that paraffin is dangerous. Try to buy pre-packaged paraffin in a container with a childproof or safety cap. Always replace the cap after
The Diners Club Winelist Awards 2011 has presented the prestigious 5-star Kurland Hotel, a proud Relais & Châteaux member property, with a Platinum Award for its outstanding new wine list. This is the second consecutive year that the Hotel has won an award. Comments Kurland Hotel owner, Peter Behr: “We are incredibly proud of our team that has worked hard to create an exceptional wine experience for our Guests. This further establishes Kurland Hotel and the Garden Route on the wine and culinary map. There have been a few changes at Kurland Hotel recently, namely our multiple phased refurbishment, new restaurant and new menus created by Leon Coetzee our Head Chef, so it’s the perfect time to celebrate with some fine local and international wines.”

Pa is dronk.
opdoen, is onomkeerbaar.
KNYSNA ALCOHOL & DRUG CENTRE
As daar nog swart merke is, strooi koeksoda daaroor. Voeg ‘n klein bietjie water by sodat dit ‘n pasta vorm.

LIEWE AGONY AUNTIE! Dear Agony Aunt, I am having a tough time with my boss at work. He always says I’m being too ‘negative’ but to be honest I don’t fully understand what being negative is and how I must change it! Jonny
‘We must look within ourselves, become responsible and provide solutions if we ever want to do more than complain, or make excuses’ – Nelson Mandela
To be ‘negative’ is often thinking and using non-positive words! So you might find yourself saying ‘I can’t do that’ or ‘I won’t do this’ or ‘what is the point, when it will only go wrong’ instead of being ‘positive’ about things and saying ‘I will try to do it’, ‘I can do it’ and ‘it is worth trying as it might go well’. Most of us have learnt how to think and how to use our words – it is this learnt behaviour that makes some people negative and so it is not necessarily your fault because it is all you have ever known. However it does not have to stay that way, you can make a decision right now to change this way of thinking and speaking. Start by becoming aware of your thoughts and the words that come out of your mouth, catch yourself when you use the words, ‘No’, ‘can’t’, ‘wont’, and turn them around to say, ‘YES’, ‘will try’ and ‘of course’! In fact there is a good movie about this called ‘Yes Man’ with actor Jim Carrie where a spell made him only able to say ‘yes’ to everything. It was extremely difficult for him at first, but in the end it turned his life around and he was a much happier person for it and for the people around him.

I recommend that you take a few minutes to write down all the things that you’re grateful for. It might be for your health, or for your family, your pets, your eyesight, your friends, your dinner, your job, as well as things that you are good at, for example cooking, gardening, driving, football, reading, singing. These are all things to be grateful for. In this Crags area alone we could count our blessings for the incredible fresh air (rich in negative ions which give us pure energy), the stunning mountain views, the bird life, the trees, the rich soil, the walks in the area. The fact that we are lucky enough to live in such a stunning part of the world, which is one of the most biodiverse places on the planet! Plus we are surrounded by beautiful wildlife including eagles and birds, baboons and monkeys, and even leopards – this is one of the only places in the entire world that all these creatures live in the wild alongside human beings ….it truly is a unique place, and we are so blessed to be living here. Start looking at the positive things in our lives and feel gratitude for them – time goes by so quickly, lets enjoy everything positive in our lives starting right now!

Belangstellendes kan hulle name by enige Masizakhe lid ingee of kontak Liezel, Urs of Margie
