Although it was disappointing for the on form Bafana Bafana, the positive side was to beat France for the first time which was also their first victory against country that is on the top 10 of the FIFA rankings, and consider the fact that France was the finalist in the previous world cup in 2006 where they were beaten by Italy that also failed to make it to next round of this tournament. Bafana Bafana had a mountain to climb as they were to score 4 Goals against France in order to qualify for the second round which would not be easy for any team, but they did prove that 13 games without a lose was not by luck but deserve it as they manage to score 2 goals in the first half, unfortunately in the second half France came back more determined and Bafana could not score the needed goals to qualify for the second round, the game ended with 2-1, a first ever win against former world champs. The win against France was not only good news for South Africa as it received compliments on hosting the very successful world cup as there is no report of any bad incident so far during the event except that of much criticized Jabulani ball by the football expect but it still do the job as many goals had been scored with our jabulani. The FIFA officials are happy with the way we hosted this event and the attended in the matches is very good we should thank the LOC, our government and ordinary citizens for such success and proving the critics wrong. Although the tournament was very tough for the African countries we still have Black Stars of Ghana who are still keeping the hopes of African continent to have a country that will be pronounced as world champ. Africa was united behind them on Saturday evening on their campaign to keep the gold world cup at home in their game against USA which was very exciting, it ended in extra time with a 2-1 victory for Ghana
which is now going to play in quarter finals against Uruguay that humiliated Bafana Bafana so it is a chance for our African brothers to make Uruguay to pay back for what they did to a host nation, once again Africa will unite behind them. This coming Saturday in Kwano kuthula Main Street there will be Aids campaign were people will be encouraged to test for HIV and AIDS through social activities such as street soccer, and live entertainment by local DJ’s and artists at Sishuba street which is part of the youth program. Letter from an American visitor to our country. It appeared in the Huffington Post. I went on a rant the other day regarding the cost of the 2010 World Cup versus all the critical needs South Africa is facing and whether or not the most vulnerable of this country would gain anything from having the World Cup hosted in their country. At that time, I also had some very positive things to say about our hosts for the 2010 World Cup and I wanted to share that side of the coin as well, because it is equally important. To say that I have been blown away at the hospitality South Africa has shown the rest of the world would be an understatement. I think back on recent Olympics and struggle to remember much reporting in the USA of athletes from other countries. I remember when a Togolese guy won a bronze medal in kayaking and NBC reported it and I thought to myself, "where are all the other fascinating stories like this one...like the Jamaican bobsledding team." In today's America, sadly, we have drifted so far towards being so US-centric that we only seem to root for the Americans. Not so here in South Africa. I've been here since early May and each week I have become more and more impressed with the global embrace that South Africans have offered up to the world. On the way to the airport a couple of weeks ago, I heard a radio program that said each day they would focus on one country that would be coming to South Africa for the World Cup,

and they would explore not only that sport's history in soccer, but also their politics, religion, and socio-cultural practices. On the television, I've seen numerous programs that focus on a particular country and it's history of soccer and how the history of that country is intertwined with their soccer history. I've seen programs on India, exploring why India enjoys soccer but hasn't really excelled at the global level... yet. And I've seen shows on soccer in Muslim countries. Maybe it's planned, maybe it's unplanned, maybe it's by chance, but it is happening. It's not just about South Africans showing off their varied and multifaceted culture to their global guests, it's also about using this opportunity to educate South Africa on the rest of Planet Earth's inhabitants. As I moved through my work here in the provinces over the last six weeks, I had a pivotal meeting with the Board members of a rural NGO. They were explaining their guiding program philosophy of Ubuntu. No, not the Linux program. I'm talking about the traditional African philosophy of Ubuntu that essentially says, "No man is an island." I found a better explanation from Wikipedia: Archbishop Desmond Tutu further explained Ubuntu in 2008: One of the sayings in our country is Ubuntu - the essence of being human. Ubuntu speaks particularly about the fact that you can't exist as a human being in isolation. It speaks about our interconnectedness. You can't be human all by yourself, and when you have this quality -- Ubuntu -- you are known for your generosity. We think of ourselves far too frequently as just individuals, separated from one another, whereas you are connected and what you do affects the whole world. When you do well, it spreads out; it is for the whole of humanity. To me, Ubuntu is the acceptance of others as parts of the sum total of each of us. And that is exactly what I have experienced during the lead up to, and the initial days of this World Cup. There is nary a South African citizen that I've met on the street, or in shops or restaurants or hotels, that hasn't gone out of their way to greet me and make me feel like I am home. And I don't mean that in the trivial, "Oh, aren't they nice, homey people here... " sort of way. I mean real, genuine interest and questions. People seriously want to know where I come from. What it's like where I
live. How does it compare to where I am now. What do I think of South Africa. Oh yes, and what do I think of Bafana Bafana... The questions and conversations are in earnest. They are honest. And they are had with enthusiasm and a thirst to know more. South Africans are drinking deeply from the cup of humanity that has been brought to their doorstep. I would never imagine that an American World Cup or Olympics would ever be this welcoming to the rest of the world. And that saddens me for the state of my home country, but it also makes me feel the pride of the South African people. I have been truly humbled on this trip. And while I have my gripes regarding development here, I cannot say one negative thing about how South Africa has handled its duties as host and hostess to the world. If I could say one thing to sum up being here during this once-in-a-lifetime experience, it would be that I've learned the value of Ubuntu, and that when found and offered in abundance, the world is indeed a better place to live in. So, if South Africa accomplishes nothing more on the playing field, it will still have won as a host country. I am a cynic, no doubt about that. And yet I have to admit, I'm a little teary just writing this because I leave for home next weekend and I will be leaving a little piece of myself here in South Africa. I just hope I have learned enough to bring back a little piece of Ubuntu to my homeland, where perhaps with a little caring and a little water, it will take root as naturally as it does here, in the cradle of civilization. It's funny, many people in America still ask me, "are the people in Africa very primitive?" Yes, I know, amazing someone could ask that but they do. And when they do, I usually explain that living in a mud hut does not make one primitive, however, allowing kids to sell drugs to other kids and engage in drive-by killings -- isn't that primitive behavior? I think it is. When I think of Ubuntu and my recent experiences here, I think America has much to learn from Africa in general, in terms of living as a larger village; and as human beings who are all interconnected with each other, each of us having an affect on our brothers and sisters. As the 2010 Cup slogan goes, "Feel it. It is here." Well, I have felt it, because I am here. Thank you South Africa, for giving me this WHAT'S NEWgift. IN PLETT – 1 JULY 2010 unexpected I am humbled.

The five-star Kurland Hotel, Plettenberg Bay, a proud member of Relais & Châteaux, will participate in one of the most celebrated annual events on the Garden Route, the ‘Pick n Pay’ Oyster and Wine Mardi Gras on Wednesday 7 July, which is part of the famous Knysna Oyster Festival. Kurland Hotel’s newly appointed Head Chef, Leon Coetzee will compete with 20 other prestigious restaurants, hotels and Chefs in the Oyster Recipe Competition. Visitors will have the opportunity to indulge on decadent oysters by the dozen prepared by the local Chefs from the Garden Route and surrounds. Each Chef is required to prepare three different unique dishes making use of this exotic delicacy. Kurland’s fine organic vegetable garden will be utilised to prepare Coetzee’s secret recipes. …. by Heidi Managed to sterilize 14 females this week. Many thanks to each and everyone who has helped to make this possible. Without everyone’s contribution, none of this would be possible, as it’s really all about team effort! When in Qolweni this past week, we were shown by a small child, a puppy which was hooked on a barbed wire fence, while trying to get to chew on a cow’s head! We were told he had been there for 2 days, with the wire in on one side of his leg and out the other (obviously from his struggle to get free). We cut the fence to remove him and had him euthenased. I wonder if he would still be sitting there, had I not been in the area? On Saturday afternoon, I was alerted by one of our little street children, regarding a dog in New Horizons, that had been kicked so badly that she couldn’t walk, as the owner no longer wanted her. He had also burnt her with a piece of wood from a fire. As she was very pregnant, Bradley took her home and helped care for her. With permission, I removed her and thanks to Dr van Reenen, she is sleeping peacefully now. On Friday I was called to Bossiesgif for a gorgeous, friendly, Retriever type male, who was tied on a wire the length of my arm. The reason he had been tied up was because he bites people passing the shack. I managed to remove him with the owner’s permission, and hopefully he will be up for
adoption at Knysna Animal Welfare soon. We are really so desperate for holding kennels. We can be saving so many innocent lives, if we just had somewhere to keep these precious unwanted animals. I would like to thank the public for always

More than 150 artists including poets, potters, praise singers, gospel groups, hip hop dancers, actors and many more took part in this year’s Tshisa Talent competition. This joint initiative between Bitou Tourism and The Lunchbox Theatre once again uncovered hidden talent in Plettenberg Bay and communities and the organisers were inundated with entries for this year’s talent search. According to Dianna Martin, CEO of Bitou Tourism, they have been overwhelmed by the quality of talent unearthed by the competition. “We have been delighted by the support from our local communities and are convinced that our semi-finalists will really wow local audiences. This is a fabulous opportunity for residents and visitors to see these incredibly talented artists and performers in action during special concerts in the various community areas. We would like to invite the public for an evening of amazement as we share the creative abilities of our local talent.” The top performance and visual artists from each community have been selected by a panel of local judges and will showcase their works at concerts staged in their respective community centres. TOURISM...high on the list of job creation opportunities. Living Stone Dialoog is a non-profit organization that grew organically out of the real engagement and 30 years-long presence of its founders around the world, through the Living Stone Network. This presence offered the possibility to hear direct request for collaboration from local people in order to get a grip on tourism as a global growing economic sector. Living Stone was awarded the Belgian two-yearly award for International Partnership for Sustainable Development. The general objective of Living Stone Dialoog is to use tourism development as a tool in the fight against poverty. To achieve this they focus on the following specific goals: Making the quality and supply of tourism education better...Support local entrepreneurs so that they can get a better grip on the tourism phenomenon... Sensitize travelers to engage more actively in the creation of an intercultural sensitive world...Deepening the international insight concerning the concept of Sustainable Tourism Development. It is of the utmost importance that the municipality put programs in place especially for those who were previously not able to participate economically in the industry. Bitou in collaboration with Eden District Municipality and Knysna are collaborating by contributing R 1.5 Million to the initiative. Eden District will make R 750 000 available and Knysna and Bitou R 350 000 each.
