What an exciting week the past one has been. Thursday evening was an amazing Meet & Greet organised by the Tourism Team graciously hosted by the Griqua folk in Kranshoek. On Friday morning we witnessed little folk from Come to Learn and Footsteps pre-schools plant trees at Monkeyland with the Green Ticket. On Friday evening Carol Thorns on her Red Cello with the beautiful visuals by her husband Alistair, enchanted the audience and the Eden Guitar Ensemble with their beautiful music, were a super opening act. On Sunday the historical society members and guests were enthralled when Timothy Twidle spoke about the Anglo-Zulu war of 1879, accompanied by over 100 slides. And every single day the weather was wonderful, the ocean was clear and warm and a wonderful time could be had by all. We are so blessed to live and/or holiday in Plett—the Bay of Beauty. Lots more on offer in this edition. Have a fun filled week whatever you choose to do (or not…)

SMELLS
By Chatterbox Peculiar as I am, I have a smell fetish that goes with my cleaning fetish. I suppose they go together because otherwise how would I know that something smells bad and needs cleaning? Actually that is a lie, I clean everything anyway but that lovely smell of cleaning liquids just turns me on. My nose is always busy no matter where I am. I hunt down new products to delight my senses in the cleaning materials section of supermarkets - my best aisle by far. I love the smell of nice clean hospital passages. Or my newly mowed lawn (that means my lawn is clean and pretty again). The smell of rain (all I can imagine is those filthy streets, gutters and drains getting a good wash and the trees and plants look greener, shinier and cleaner). Some beauty salons have such nice aromas in them that I could quite happily park off on the visitors couch for the day. My car goes much faster when it has been cleaned and polished inside and out, and I drive along breathing in the clean smell with such delight. I love the antiseptic smell of the verandas being washed around the house, having the dog errors removed. My garage gets bigger when it has been vacuumed and washed with above mentioned antiseptic. Whenever I am visiting someone and a new fresh cleaning smell comes my way, I can barely say hello properly before inquiring as to the source of that gorgeous smell. Food smells don’t turn me on, not even cakes or fresh bread. In fact some foods smell so

Tuesdays 17h00 - 18h30 Thursdays 17h00 - 18h30 R50 per class bad they should not be allowed to be cooked inside at all. I also have a ”bad smell nose" that is also always on the go. People who have dogs and do not notice or care what their houses smell like, amaze me. I can walk blind-folded into a house and tell you whether they have dogs. Along with this love of pets comes the hair that sticks to one’s clothing. Once you leave, it is a huge necessity to disrobe instantly at home and put everything in the washing machine with heaps of special deodorising powders and sta-soft. Bathing comes next. Can people not smell that doggy smell (the "not nice one" I mean)? My two cherubs have regular appointments with the parlour for haircuts and washes and in between the faintest odour gets the bath water running for them. Kittys come next on this list and that kitty litter odour beats all odours for being really foul. Don't get me wrong, I ADORE animals, any animals! But the home varieties do need keeping clean. I love the smell of cows. It is a farmy smell and goes with the territory. I think all farm smells are good: the hay, the pigsty’s, the milking sheds, sheep, chickens, ducks and barns. Be warned though that patting goats leaves a reek that is impossible to get off your hands. Someone should invent an anti repellent with that smell - for keeping unwanted people away . Smoking - another one of my pet smell hates. Beloved used to smoke and he never believed me when I told him that his hair, hands, clothes, breath, all smelt real bad. He stopped a year and a half ago and now is more fussy than I am in that regard and keeps asking whether he really ever smelt that bad!!! I found the most amazing thingie at the chemist the other day; you fill it with water and add three drops of delicious oils that come with it and hey presto – a lovely smell wafting everywhere. This toy now lives in our dressing room, because, even tho' we have washed everything in that room, the slight smell of smoke still lingers. This toy is certainly helping and I love the different fragrances that come with it. One day roses, next lavender, next honeysuckle and so on. That reminds me.... bath time . Thank you to our Plettenberg Bay SAPS for giving us the following important information:
Renewal of firearm licenses and the collection thereof at police stations
The South African Police Service in the Western Cape would like to remind licensed firearm owners that during 2012 many licenses issued in terms of the Firearm Controls Act (Act 60 of 2000) will expire, and needs to be renewed. This process is not automatic, and a licensee will have to submit an application 90 days prior to the expiry date at his or her local police station in terms of the mentioned legislation. We would also like to encourage firearm owners to make an enquiry at their police station where an application was submitted, for issued licenses, as these licenses are often left uncollected for many months. The ownership of a firearm is not only governed by legislation, but is also a huge responsibility and we therefore appeal to firearm owners to take the necessary care in this regard. Thank you Bitou Municipality Thanks to Bitou Municipality for allowing Henry van Rooyen to do an excellent job like he did. It is been a long time that we disabled people felt that we are actually taken care of. I asked my son to write this as I am unable to write but are having a smile because of Henry been helping me at SASSA last year obtaining a grant-of which I never had. This young man helped me fill in my forms, directed me, every time I needed someone to help me, even though my wife and I was not from the New Horizons area, he was there and he was spending some time at various SASSA points to assist something that never happened in the past. Henry we appreciate every effort that you put in to help many of us in Plettenberg Bay. I always say that it is easy for people to instruct from an office point of view but you really come to the ground practically and that is what made us countable. You made us feel not outside as circumstances can be very unbearable in my situation (this life). Your are a kind young man with lots of skills to offer. We wish you many long years with the disabled community as this pass not unforeseen by God. God is watching over you and I realize that’s why I always see you shining. Thank you. Letter via the Editor PLETT AIRPORT In reply to your reader's comments regarding the noise of aircraft movements from the Plettenberg Bay Airport. If my information is correct, the Plett Airport has been in existence since the mid 60's having been purchased from a local farmer by the local authorities at the time, so anybody purchasing property in the area should have realised that aircraft do make a noise when landing or taking off. With the ongoing increase in aviation world wide, so the noise will increase accordingly. With commercial operators using the airfield - of which they are entitled to - namely the skydivers they are promoting tourism in Plett by supplying an adventure sport, which also in turn gives jobs. May I ask what our complainants are doing for Plett? As there are new bidders in the pipeline for the running of the airport, which has stagnated over the past years as the previous municipality could not get their act together, there will be more commercial interest such as scheduled flights, flying schools, skydiving and scenic and private charters taking place in the not too distant future, so my advise is that if you can't take the heat, get out of the bath and move somewhere else as the airport will not be going away any time soon. Local Pilot.

by Athane Scholtz Plettenberg bay-based re-forestation organisation The Green Ticket last week established the beginnings of a new natural forest outside primate sanctuary Monkeyland. Getting kiddies from Come to Learn and Footsteps day care centres to help plant trees, The Green Ticket representative, Ingwe Forest Adventures director Debbie Fermor, explained the organisation was attempting to create mini natural forests across the Garden Route as part the organisation’s bigger vision of re-forestation, environmental education and carbon offset. The Green Ticket has devised a system in which corporates and individuals from around the world can offset their impact on the environment by calculating their carbon footprint – and then planting indigenous trees in the Garden Route to offset their impact. “Instead of trying to plant all those trees yourself or at your house, The Green Ticket sets up tree planting projects in suitable places across the region and plant trees on your behalf while at the same time using the opportunity for environmental education and awareness. “Corporates or individuals pay for trees, which are then planted by
learners and community members at schools and public spaces. Participants are given a basic talk about the need for trees and their role in carbon regeneration. Trees are also not just planted every which way, but clustered according to scientifically proven methods of re-forestation to mimic the trees and conditions in the indigenous forests of the Garden Route. Where possible, like at the space outside Monkeyland, we try to start new forests close to existing forests, so that the old and the new can eventually extend into each other,” says Debbie. The Green Ticket also records and monitors all trees planted to ensure healthy growth and longevity, as well as the long term sustainability of the project. It is a registered non-profit organisation and therefore donations are tax deductible and relevant certificates are issued in this regard. www.thegreenticket.org See pics of the event on www.helloplett.co.za - Facebook page. Philippians 1:6 [MKJV] "...being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ..." There are many believers who, in spite of being absolutely sure that they have been saved one time or another, still sometimes struggle with serious doubts whether their lives are pleasing enough to God and whether therefore they eventually will reach heaven. Our text above, written by Paul to the Philippians, should remove any of these doubts and give us the assurance that once God, by His Holy Spirit, has placed the life of Christ in us by the new birth, He will also see us through to the end. The Amplified Bible elaborates and puts it like this: "And I am convinced and sure of this very thing, that He Who began a good work in you will continue until the day of Jesus Christ [right up to the time of His return], developing [that good work] and perfecting and bringing it to full completion in you." Paul wants us to be absolutely sure of the fact that our salvation, ALL of it, is by Christ and by Him alone and
Face Facts
does not depend upon our works. The Greek word "perform" is "epiteleo" and carries the meaning of "to fulfill further"; "to execute"; "to terminate"; "to finish to perfection". God, so to speak, will never embark on any project that He will not finish and bring to perfect completion. The writer to the Hebrews confirms this truth and says: "Looking to Jesus the Author and Finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and sat down at the right of the throne of God." [Heb.12:2] Not only do we have the promise and the assurance that our spiritual lives are held in God's hands and therefore our salvation is sure, but it also removes any and all cause for pride as all of it is God's work and there is nothing that we can add to it. No wonder Paul writes: "For by grace you are saved through faith, and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast." [Eph.2:8-9] This does not mean, however, that once one has been saved he or she

can live life just as they please. Once a person has been born again and has submitted his/her life to Christ that person should allow Christ to live His life through them by the guidance and power of the Holy Spirit by yielding to Him on a daily basis. The results will follow and will eventually be visible in a life of "good works" - NOT in order to impress God or to gain His acceptance or to merit anything but because of a love for Him and allowing Him to do the works in and through us as He pleases. Paul, again, writes: "For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to good works, which God has before ordained that we should walk in them." [Eph.2:10] Another piece of proof that it's all God's doing!" Finally, if you are still perhaps not completely convinced, look at the words of Jude, verses 24-25, again taken from the Amplified Bible: "Now to Him Who is able to keep you without stumbling or slipping or falling, and to present [you] unblemished (blameless and faultless) before the presence of His glory in triumphant joy and exultation [with unspeakable, ecstatic delight]. To the one only God, our Savior through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory (splendor), majesty, might and dominion, and power and authority, before all time and now and forever (unto all the ages of eternity). Amen (so be it). Henk.

3rd Annual Tshisa Talent Search Hots up. For the 3rd year running Lunchbox Theatre is on the search for local performance talent. TSHISA TALENT offers local performance artists a chance to compete for the coveted title of TSHISA TALENT ‘Performance Artist’ of the year. Last year saw winners Broken Puzzle and various runners up walk away with some fantastic prizes. Oriented Birds F.C News Greetings everyone and I’m so grateful for the support we receive from the public and our faithful supporters. Even though we are not doing well as far as the league is concerned; they always encourage and motivate us through the hard times. Yes we are losing but we have hope and we know we will come victorious soon and we don’t give up becoz we are winners by nature. Some have already written us out but he who laughs last laughs the longest. It’s not how you start but how you finish. We had a very good game last Saturday, we dominated the entire game but we lost at the end and that is not good at this level. We are hanging in there, joy is coming. We went to see the pitch yesterday and it’s not too bad. We hope by Saturday that pitch will be in good condition. We are facing Glendene United EC this weekend here at home Saturday 04 February 12 at 15H00 (kick off). We have few injuries and knocks but we have players that will do the job. This one is coming home boys. I thank ya’ll and God bless ya’ll. Environmental Education at Monkeyland Monkeyland had a special Friday morning on January 27th. Little kids from the schools Footsteps, in Plett, and Come to Learn, in The Crags, came to plant some trees in the primate sanctuary. The non-profit organization The Green Ticket, which develops re-forestation and environmental education projects, gave all the support. It was notable in the kids’ faces how happy they were in helping to plant the trees with their little shovels. Around 40 children, from both schools, aged from 2 to 6 years old were enthusiastic during the event. Rikke Damman from The Green Ticket organization said it was the first time they worked with children of those ages, usually it is with older ones. But it is never too early to learn the importance of taking care of the environment.
Mangold Point Cuts, Highlights & Colours Michelle & Cathy: Tel No 044 533 6986 Cell: 071 297 2541 Several species of indigenous trees were planted with the help of the little citizens. Such trees are threatened by alien plants, which damage the soil and use excessive groundwater. After the “hard work”, the kids enjoyed a free tour in Birds of Eden and Monkeyland. There they could see the animals living in the indigenous forest and realize how important it is to preserve their habitat. By Leo França See pics on www.helloplett.co.za— facebook page. Yeoman’s Award On Monday I withdrew money from the FNB ATM at Market Square. In another senior moment I left a very expensive blackberry smartphone on the ATM counter. Only when I got to my car did I realise I had lost or misplaced my phone. Of course I accepted by now it was long gone. Just then a security guard from Niqua Security came running to me, told me he had been looking for me and handed me my phone. This must be a first in our crime plagued country. Thank you Melumzi Gobo and Niqua Security.

Welcome Open 7 days a week
The Meet @ Greet in Kranshoek Jenny Damonds reports This annual function was held on 26 January 2012. It was attended by His worship the Mayor, Memory Booysen, Deputy Mayor Adam van Rhyner and their first ladies. It was organized by Plett Tourism, Joffre Lottering and his team. Guest speakers were Mr Teddy Tsetse- Provincial Local Tourism, Mrs Joan Berning-Eden to Addo Initiative, Mr Gareth Robinson -Tour Guiding & Birding, Chris van Chriesen-Robberg Corridor Initiative The Kranshoek Tourism board, The Honourable Chief Alan Le Fleur and his choir. The MC SW Janssen and Mr Maxwell Le Fleur introduced the Kranshoek history and welcomed the distinguished guests. . Usually the meet & greets take place at the business chamber or selected locations. Then it is just meet, greet and grab. But for Kranshoek it was a meeting of another angle. Their program was jam-packed. First everybody was welcomed with song and praise by the "Lyfwag Choir" Then they visited the Griqua headquarters ( die rooikantoor) to browse through Griqua history and then on to the
monument, a symbol of bravery for the Griqua. The MC also gave all a very short insight of the heritage of the Griqua including the Nelson Caves at Robberg and that Jakkalskraal received its name from a Khoe Kaptein, Kaptein Jakkels. He also revealed that the mayor once said that he is the only Black Griqua. The guests were further entertained with the Nama Language which the young children convey through a song and the omnipresent Rieldans. The focus of the evening was the connecting of nature with Art and the community. Also that Kranshoek is the richest in cultural heritage and their beautiful fynbos. The Mayor informed everybody in no uncertain terms that the Griqua and Nama language are acknowledged in government and that Bitou Municipality will recognise the Paramount Chief and his people. Our first meeting of the year will take place on Thursday, 16th February, at 10.00 a.m. at Packwood Wine Farm and Country Estate, owned by Vicky and Peter Gent. Vicky has very kindly offered to talk to us about the development of this beautiful property and we will be able to view the vineyard and surrounding landscape. There will be a charge of R25 for tea, coffee, snacks and a wine tasting so for catering purposes we would appreciate your speedy response to advise us whether or not you will be attending. Please telephone either Nita on 533-5357 or Brenda on 533-5489. Visitors are very welcome Directions: Drive along the N2 towards Knysna and just after the Harkerville turning and the Sasol garage take the turning to Fisanthoek on the right hand side and follow that road for 6 kms. You will come to a series of signboards, one of which shows Packwood Country Estate straight on up the hill which you should follow until reaching the house and parking area – do not turn right there to Packwood Farm. FOUND when I was walking along Beachy Head I picked up a pair of spectacles with black frames. I’m sure they must belong to a walker or a runner who dropped them. Surprisingly, they’re not damaged as they were lying in the street. Please could the owner to phone me on 044-533-3695 or 083-270-5180

Pam Frielinghaus much loved Mom, Gran, & GreatGran, passed away peacefully in Port Elizabeth on the 24th January 2012, aged 86. The family are so grateful to everyone at Nazarath House for the loving & compassionate care she received during the last few years of her life. She was the kindest & gentlest of souls, & we will miss her.
Snippets for the week The Community Veterinary Clinic relies only on the CVC Charity Shop for funds to sterilize dogs and cats from the under-privileged areas. At the moment we are averaging two to three dogs a day but would like to increase that number as much as possible. We are appealing to the public to donate any unused items to the CVC Charity Shop so that we may raise the necessary funds to reduce the number of unsprayed females currently roaming the streets. The majority of the dog owners are very willing for us to sterilize their animals but there are still a few who see puppies as a way of making money. Our goal is to persevere with these owners in the hope that they will eventually see the wisdom in having their dogs sterilized. So if you are wondering what to do with those items that you just don’t have a need for anymore, why not put them to good use by donating them to the CVC Charity Shop. Not only will you be clearing out your clutter but you will also be giving an animal a better quality of life! The Bitou CVC is in need of a travelling box for dog collections. Medium to Large. WHAT'S NEW IN PLETT - 2 FEBRUARY 2012
Griqua Blessings for Tourism Our Tourism team organized a fabulous evening of culture, entertainment and discovery when the Kranshoek Griqua community hosted the first meet greet of the year on 26th January. The tone of the evening was set when we were cheerily waved in the right direction by the Riel Dancers, dressed in their traditional outfits. We were warmly welcomed by “Oom Sammie”, Mr SW Janssen, and the lovely singing of the Griqua “Lyfwag” Choir. There were a good number of tourism operators and it was good to see the Mayor and Deputy Mayor as well as the new head of Strategic Services, Mr Dupré Lombaard and his wife, join the gathering. In the mellow evening air we strolled across from the Griqua Hall to the headquarters of the Grigua National Conference of South Africa, where the secretary, Maxwell le Fleur explained the significance of this building and organization. which houses historic photographs and documents as well as being the headquarters of the organization which administers 23 branches throughout the country. We were then very honoured to be allowed in to the hallowed Monument grounds, where the daughter of Adam Kok 111, and wife of AAS le Fleur 1, Rachel Susannah Kok, is buried. The other graves are those of her daughters. The grave of die Kneg, Paramount Chief AAS Le Fleur 1 is on the Van Rooyen farm at Robberg. Back at the hall our mayor, Cllr Memory Booysen assured everyone that the Council was determined to make tourism work effectively. He also pledged the Council’s support and recognition of the Griqua culture and aspirations (It is hoped that the cottage at Jakkalskraal will be restored and a centre built there which hopefully Council will help facilitate. This has been “in the pipeline” for many years and will add another great cultural experience to the area) There was great celebration and more singing when Paramount Chief Alan Le Fleur joined the gathering. Delicious traditional food was graciously served, A veritable feast of unusual flavours! Teddy Stetse from Cape Town Routes unlimited said he was very impressed with the area and shared a little of the plans to amalgamate Cape Town Routes unlimited with Wesgro and eventually all developmental and tourism structures funded by Province. We were treated to beautiful
singing by the Nama Choir, and dancing by the young Riel dancers, whose fabulous footwork continues to enthrall. Joan Berning spoke on the tremendous value of Nature Tourism. She also shared the plans for Site Specific 2012 and Eden to Addo’s involvement in this year's event. Chris von Christierson, co-sponsor with Eden to Addo of Aartmoeders, the iconic stone sculptures of elephants on the Kranshoek Cliffs, spoke about the imminent launch of the Robberg Nature Corridor which will link Robberg to Kranshoek.
Gareth Robinson who is fairly new to the area is doing guided hikes on Robberg, introduced his services to encourage more Birding tourism. The evenings proceedings were concluded by the introduction of the Kranshoek Community Tourism Forum with Mr Freddie Jasson sharing some of the exciting other offerings kranshoek presents to her visitors and the forums aspirations for greater involvement in Tourism in the region. Letter via the Editor Fantastic service from Plett Suppliers I have experienced such wonderful service from two Plett businesses in the past week. The jeweller next to FNB in the main street, when asked to fit a new watch strap advised me that he could rather just replace the broken small securing loop on the existing strap. It cost one seventh of the cost of a new strap. Thank you to the kind lady for the advice. Then at IC opticians (ex Muir’s ) instead of supplying a complete frame to my damaged prescription sun glasses they advised replacing only the damaged arm. They warned me that it would not be a perfect match. It is so close that the difference will only be noticed by a very keen eye closely examining the spectacles. The charge? No charge.. With compliments from IC. Service and kind gestures such as the above restore one’s faith in human nature. Thank you IC and the Jeweller !! 8 June 1935 to 28 January 2012 Arnold van Eeden was born in George in June 1935 and grew up in Vanwyk's Dorp, a small village in the Karoo. Arnold went to Outeniqua high school in George and did his teachers training in Oudtshoorn. He started his teaching career at the Vocational high school in Kimberley. Thereafter he taught at the Elizabeth Conradie school for the physically disabled and Herlear primary school . In 1973 Arnold arrived in Plettenberg Bay with his wife Gloria and children Rene (10), Andre (8), Shelley (5) and Charl (3) to take up the post of headmaster of Plettenberg Bay primary school shortly after it opened. It consisted of four classrooms and a library, four teachers and 75 pupils. Plettenberg Bay Primary School, known as the “school on the hill”, was situated on the erf now occupied by the Arrowwood complex (below Cornuti). Arnold taught English and Afrikaans to Standards 4s and 5s. When pupil numbers reached 100, his wife, affectionately known as Auntie Gloria, became secretary at the school for the next eight years. As the pupil numbers increased over the years, pre-fabricated classrooms were erected in the school grounds. By 1990, nine prefabs were dotted around the main building to accommodate 375 pupils and a staff of 15. Arnold lobbied the Education Department for 10 years to move the school, due to the space problems. During his dynamic 17 years as head of the school and with scant resources he, along with enthusiastic staff and school committees, purchased a 36seater bus for extra-mural activities and tours to Cape Town, built a swimming pool, held an annual
Spring Flower Day during which posies made by pupils were pre sented to all the elderly folk in the town, introduced a school magazine, held regular flea markets and fetes for fund raising, and organized annual environmental coastal hikes, amongst others. In addition Arnold introduced a school song (written by Mavis Greig) and school motto (Aim high) which are still in use today. In acknowledgment of these efforts, Plett Primary School was nominated as one of ten schools throughout the country to be featured on the SABC television programme "A time to give". Arnold had a great love for children and all his pupils were very special to him. During his 17 years at the school he left an indelible mark on the pupils that were fortunate to attend Plett Primary while he was headmaster. In his extra-mural activities, Arnold served the community in many ways. He was Secretary, President and Deputy District Governor of Lions International and served on the committee of the Tourism Board. He was also actively involved in the Methodist Church and served as Steward and Circuit Steward for many years. Arnold was a member of the Plett Country Club and enjoyed a regular game of tennis and golf. The lemon meringue pie at the club being one of the major draw cards. After being diagnosed with Parkinson's disease Arnold retired in 1990. Although debilitated by Parkinson's, he took up carpentry and started a mini industry making toys for children. As time passed and his health deteriorated fishing became his favorite pastime. Arnold continued to enjoy his fishing despite much difficulty and many falls. Fishing was his passion and he continued to catch many big fish and inspire many fish-

Arnold (Arnie) van Eeden A Legend
erman both young and old. His last fishing outing was as recent as 3 years ago. In his mind however he continued to fish until the very end and could often be seen sitting in the lounge reeling in that big one. After his health deteriorated significantly Arnold passed away on Saturday 28th January at home, surrounded by and cared for by his loving wife and family. Arnold battled with Parkinson's disease for 27 years and never complained, he was an example to all of us. Arnold believed in leading by example and to always see the best in people. He lived to serve God and others, and leaves a legacy of integrity, righteousness and standing up for Christian values. He will be sorely missed by his family, friends, past pupils and fishing buddies.
