We were hoping to officially congratulate the new mayor and various office bearers in this edition after the first Council meeting which was called on 1st June… But The meeting was postponed until further notice. An interdict was instituted against the municipality on the basis of 2 objections regarding the elections which have not been responded to by the IEC. The case was to be heard 6pm yesterday evening … so hopefully we will have a meeting very soon to officially swear in / appoint our new Councillors and know what their portfolios all are .( Legally it should be on or before Friday, should the election results be ratified by the IEC) It will be really great to get our new Council working and we pray that despite their different opinions, the first priority for each and every one of them will always be “What’s best for Plett.” Have another wonderful week in Plett. COFFEE & MEN Strange mix you might think. I have never liked coffee and can never get over the excitement in the morning, lunch time and evenings when people are going to have their coffee. My Mother and Stepfather use to live for their eight or so cups a day. It had to be Nescafe Classic and still is for Mom anyway. If I had Frisco etc they would NOT drink it. So off to the shop. Over the years if I have had to coffee it was whatever was on hand - it all tasted the same and I would much rather have had a glass of wine regardless of time. I used to watch my friend G - going through all that measuring and mixing and making everyone at the table smell this new one, or this new one - did nothing for me. One bright sunny day my friend Helen asked if I would go with her to go and have her coffee fix. I could feel my hair curling - my friends all know I do not drink tea, coffee, milk, water (it makes me cough-no jokes) and all those things so was Helen having a brain aneurism? They know wine is the answer or a Campari. As she was getting over a sad big issue I said I would, but I did gently remind her in the car about my dislike for that stuff and my preference. All she said was "you will like this spot" and the coffee everyone who is anyone meets at the Double Shot Coffee Bar Being my curious self I thought "Oh well I will just look at the passing parade and pat Helen’s hand whenever necessary" . I looked at those two Karins standing there looking young and fresh and smiley and trying my luck asked in a soft whisper, if they sold wine. No certainly not " this is a coffee bar". Glancing at the menu I noticed all the rabbit food on the menu and I knew I could not possibly like this joint. Helen ordered a cappuccino, caffeine free and milk. I threw in the towel and said a proper coffee Cappuccino for me. If I am going to throw up might as well be the real job. Mind Boggling is all I can say. My cup of the dreaded stuff was Soooo divine that I promptly had another cup. My friends of long standing in Johannesburg would have been gob-smacked. Since then I have made friends with these wonderful girls at Double Shot and have to visit them often for "my fix". In April when the family came to visit I told them that they had to go and experience this Coffee shop. Their mouths dropped -

had they heard correctly. They have seen me taking my morning pills with other liquids. Unfortunately we could not get in, very popular, but they were still looking at me with sideways glances about this. Had I lost it. My complaint above this little piece of heaven that Helen took me to - these girls are always going away for a couple of weeks. This time they are visiting 'Roasteries' all over the world. How can they do this to me!!! I have since been taken to another one (coffee shop) and there it was again "railway - boarding school - airport type coffee. So I am off coffee again until the two treasures arrive back . MEN - for months my Beloved has watched me grow herbs from seed. Helping me all the way - nurturing them like children, been equally excited when their little green heads came out of the ground - proudly told all of our friends about my skills and even bought the beautiful pots for "my kitchen". I am no cook - in fact kitchens I hate. We kinda share the cooking. Tonight as I was making our Bolognaise I asked him if he could bring in the tray of herbs. "What for, he asked" - so that I can COOK with them. Oh no he says, I like it the way you always make it - I told him I always put all the dried herbs in, the exact things we know have fresh". Definitely NO he said, I prefer those little bottles with the same colour brown leaves in all the bottles. Beat that!!!!! Lots of love, Chatterbox ‘AL ANON. Icy cold temperatures could not scare the 25 brave Born in Africa eco warriors during the weekend of 20-22 May 2011. The girls from Crags, Kranshoek, Wittedrift and Harkerville took part in a most exiting camp thanks to Richmond of SANPARKS held at the Natures Valley rest camp. Thanks to the expertise of Cindy-Lee Coetzee of the Nature’s Valley Trust, a jam packed program was put into place to teach the youngsters about the delicate eco system of rivers, lagoons and the importance of our indigenous forests. 2011 is the International year of forests and to celebrate this Debbie Fermor and Rikke Dammann of the Green ticket arranged a tree planting ceremony where six indigenous trees were planted. The girls also enjoyed delicious South African braai who better prepared than by Mac of Rocky Road/ WWISA. BIA would like to thank the folk above as well as Pete Wilson for the donation of milk and the BIA staff and volunteers for putting together a superb program and for furthering the importance of ecological education in the Bitou district. After the success of this camp, the BIA Gr8 ,9 and 10 boys showed the girls what a great camp can be like! Yes, our 28 boys followed the same program as our brave eco warrior girls and proved to have just as much fun! Well done guys, you make us proud and thanks to our above mentioned sponsors once again for making it a weekend to remember!

Top South African Artists Experiment With Land Art During Site_Specific Launch In Plettenberg Bay Established land artists Strijdom van der Merwe from South Africa, Urs Twellman from Switzerland, Gabriele Meneguzzi and Vincenzo Sponga from Italy set the tone for South Africa’s first international land art event called Site_Specific when they leapt to help leading South African sculptor Marco Cianfanelli drag driftwood across Plettenberg Bay’s Central Beach. A collaborative, collegial spirit and an enthusiasm for experimentation has infused the week of art-making. Saturday 28th May marked the official opening of South Africa’s first land art route—a fusion of environmental and cultural tourism. “I couldn’t resist the chance to create art in the gift economy,” Angus Taylor, one of South Africa’s top-selling sculptors said. “It’s a treat to spend a week in the company of other artists who are also interested in making art outside of the commodity market.” “We’re taking art off the pedestal and putting it on the sand and in the land,” Site_Specific co-founder Strijdom van der Merwe said. This artist-led project uses the earth as the medium of creation. The artists work directly with the land and the surrounding natural habitat at various locations in and around Plettenberg Bay. Land art has always been at the extreme of art making: it is outside the gallery
setting; it uses the terrain as its canvas; and anything from one’s hands to earth moving equipment for the paintbrush. Plans for a group show will be announced later in the year. The Site_Specific catalogue is scheduled for release in September, 2011. Site_Specific aims to use art to transform the land—and the communities that share it. 120 Bitou Learners Discover Treasure on South Africa’s First Land Art Trail
More than 120 learners from Bitou schools took part in a treasure hunt along the land art trail as part of a pioneering art, education, and skills development program called Site_Specific. The young people explored work by environmental art star Urs Twellman from Switzerland, South Africa’s leading land artist Strijdom van der Merwe, and 13 top artists to learn how to make art from sticks, stones, sand, and other materials found free-of-charge in nature. Making land art requires an awareness of the contours, textures, and colors of the site as well as an understanding of the fundamentals of construction. The morning engagement along the thee-km Site_Specific land art trail in Plettenberg Bay’s Central Beach is designed to inspire participants to experiment with creating art in the natural landscape. A team of learners from Kranshoek spontaneously built an installation along the land art trail using materials found on the beach that powerfully demonstrates the power of land art to unlock people’s imagination. “I liken the treasure hunt to giving grains of sand to each and every learner. Over time, some may retain kernels of the experience and the impressions about the land art,” Erica Luttich, Site_Specific co-founder said. To make a measurable, long-term difference, Site_Specific intends to partner with established community art education initiatives. By linking art, culture, history, and the environment, Site_Specific is creating a model for using the power of land art to challenge and change people’s perceptions about their natural environment. On asking our maid how she likes shopping at the new Shoprite in Kwanokathule, she told me that not many people shop there as they will then have a long walk home carrying their shopping so they continue to shop in town and the Taxi takes them closer to their homes. This gave me of an idea for someone to start a business either offering to transport their shopping on a bicycle with a carrier on the handlebars similar to deliveries in the post war era, or better still have a few bicycles manufactured that have two wheels in the front with two seats and the operator sitting at the rear on the saddle. These are quite common in the far east for transporting people at minimal cost. Operators of these bicycles could offer their services at the checkout of Shoprite to take both the customer and their shopping to their home in Kwano at minimal cost. Letter via the Editor The desalination plant. Many people are asking me about it, and after checking, the situation is as follows. The plant was up and running at 60% capacity since restart on 16 April 2011. Last week the plant was back in full production. The plant itself is working perfectly. Thick safety glass was put in the windows to cut down the sound of the plant. The plant is fully automatic and needs only one person to run it. So when you hear or see nothing, the plant is still working. The problem for not running at full capacity was the supply of sea water. Seven boreholes were sunk in the mount of the piesang river, 12 meters deep to get pure sea water. Four them gave problems. Two have been fixed, since 24 May 2011 as the electrical cables were faulty. The third borehole needs to be reinstalled as the casing was pulled out of the sand with the submersible pump during the rush to repair the pump, just before the December holidays. This borehole is the thick blue pipe visible in the river sticking out about 3 meters. It is expected that the fourth borehole is non functional due to the same electrical cable problems. All boreholes have now been equipped with more durable electrical cables. The boreholes are 12 meters deep, as they then get to pure sea water. The advantage of having the pumps in the piesang river mouth is that the sand is of equal grain size and does not compact like sand on the beaches. Drawing in seawater through the sand saved the town the cost of putting in expensive pre treatment filters. Robberg beach was the original choice but they hit rock 3 meter down and the fine grained sand did not allow enough water to the collectors. The municipality has well especially in how fast the plant was built to ensure water for the peak season, during a period when we were enduring a severe drought Paul Scheepers

Site_Specific Land Art Festival Establishes Plettenberg Bay As Land Art Hot-Spot “Outlandish Art” Organizer Believes Plettenberg Bay Could Become The Santa Fe of Africa—A Mecca for Cultural Tourism Visual artists, performing artists, and crafters from all over Plettenberg Bay are joined forces to help celebrate the launch of Site_Specific, South Africa’s first-ever international land art celebration. The work of nineteen Plettenberg Bay-based visual artists and nine groups of performing artists were on show alongside the seventeen invited artists led by Swiss land art star Urs Twellman and South African land art icon Strijdom van der Merwe. “Site_Specific has galvanized many of the artists and craftspeople from across Plettenberg Bay to work together to create public forums for sharing their talent.
Plettenberg Bay could become the Santa Fe of Africa—a mecca for cultural tourism,” Myfanway “Muffin” Bekker-Baladjadia said. Muffin, a University of Pretoria-trained painter, returned home to South Africa, after more than 20 years in the United States, with a deep appreciation of the economic benefits that cultural tourism can bring to a community like Plettenberg Bay. Muffin, a respected art teacher, organized a series of workshops and lectures to build awareness and understanding about land art during the three months preceding Site_Specific. Bekker-Balajadia also mounted the “Outlandish Art” show to enable Plettenberg Bay-based artists to show their work to visitors during this weekend’s cultural celebration. “A growing number of artists are attracted to Plettenberg Bay because of it outstanding natural environment, rich cultural heritage, and support system for artistic development. The launch of Site_Specific mark an important step towards linking cultural and eco-tourism in the area,” Ralph Links, head of Plettenberg Bay Tourism said. Site_Specific aims to use art to transform the land—and the communities that share it!

Grass vs Grain
I’m often asked: “Why should I eat grass-fed meat as apposed to grain-fed meat? What’s the fuss all about?” The difference, in fact, is substantial. Let me give you a few facts so that you can make an informed decision the next time you buy meat for yourselves and your families. Firstly, there is a vast difference in the way the animals are reared. Grass-fed animals are fed exclusively on grass and are free to roam the fields. Grain-fed animals are raised in feedlot schemes where they are, more often than not, force fed. Their diets consist of grains, soy, bone meal and other foods that do not form part of their natural diet. Due to this unnatural diet and the close quarters these animals inhabit, diseases spread quickly and they are frequently ill. They are therefore routinely injected with anti-biotics which retards their growth and because the industry is focused on getting the beasts from birth to plate in the shortest time possible, they try and speed the process up by injecting them with growth hormones. Both the anti-biotics and the growth hormones are not only detrimental to the health of the animals but have a negative effect on the health of the people who consume these animals. The diseases that people are contracting are becoming more and more resistant to anti-biotics and it’s no small wonder, as we are consuming so many of these anti-biotics in our daily diet that they have become almost ineffective in fighting diseases. I could go on and on but these are just a few facts I wanted to share with you. When the time comes to apply for a house we all stand in queues but to approve, you will hear that you don't qualify. My deep pain is that you find that people who get houses are people who just arrive in Plett and are not even more than five months staying in Plett. Young females who don't even meet the requirements to get a house got a house, they are unemployed. I mean how are they going to pay the Municipality services? I think the Municipality housing committee needs to look at this, because we as the citizens of this town we don't benefit from all the basic needs of the local government. Lindelwa Wows crowd with her beautiful voice Lindelwa, a young lady who lives at Masizame in KwaNokuthula had an appreciative crowd totally enthralled on Friday night with her debut performance at Miguels when the Paint a Dream works were launched. Lindelwa, dressed in a beautiful red dress, stepped confidently onto the stage and unaccompanied by any music, sang a beautiful song with a strong melodious voice. When music was added her confidence rose and she gave a stunning performance. She ended with a beautiful Xhosa song, again totally unaccompanied. This is a voice that will continue to blossom as she grows her talent. A fabulous surprise for Lindelwa, who thought she was going to perform alone to a small local audience was the appearance of internationally renowned singer Wende, who joined her on stage. What a privilege to be in the audience on such a special evening. Thank you to all who nurture our children in Plett and help them make their dreams come true!

Lunchbox Theatre celebrates Environment Week Thanks to the ever present support of Bitou Tourism, Lunchbox Theatre has taken their water conservation show, The Last Drop, to 5 local schools to raise awareness around International Environment Week from 30 May – 5 June. The educational theatre show was performed to around 2000 primary school learners from Crags, Kranshoek, Formosa, Harkeville and Kranshoek Primary Schools in this week. This highly interactive show and workshop program highlights the importance of water as a natural resource in our daily lives. It explores the consequences of not caring for this life giving resource and offers many practical tips on how to save water at home and at school. The show has toured to over 30 schools and educated more than 7000 learners since March 2010. Feedback from the teachers and learners acts as constant reassurance that theatre is indeed a powerful medium for conveying important environmental and social issues. Letter via the Editor Did you know that on Tuesday this week, 31 May, (50 years ago) we broke away from British Colonial rule - (Union of South Africa) to form what is now called The Republic of South Africa - with new measurements (was, inches, feet, yards, etc.) now called centimeters, kilograms, kilometers, etc, etc. - new currency (was Pounds, shillings & pence) to Rands and Cents. It was a holiday, and a rightly deserved one, so ... (now days the holidays are for???) The Comrades Marathon was held on this day. You went round to the friends early morning, had coffee, beers, etc, lekker food during the day, and watched the race for 10 /11 hours. Buddies just came and went during the day, kids played around in the garden or if a nice hot day, swam in the pool. It was truly a lekker time. Now days, there is no mention in any media, never mind radio/tv, that we have been in existence for this long!!!!!! (It's just pushed aside I suppose the government have their reasons!!!) The Comrades Marathon was run on 29 May this year!!!!!!! (for the life of me, I dont know why '' they don't coincide'' - I suppose here again, only they know!!). Anyway, it's a pity that these lovely events, are not of relevence to them. But, for those of us who remember those days, I say Cheers!, and let's hope that we can at least get this town on the right track, if nothing else. This warning is an effort to inform other surfers, bathers and paddlers of the incident and to encourage anyone intending to swim, surf or paddle along the Plettenberg Bay stretch of coastline to be cautious.
NSRI SEA RESCUE STATION 14 – Plettenberg Bay: Sea Rescue – Plettenberg Bay – 30 May, 2011: Warning following shark incident: A warning is issued for bathers, surfers and paddlers to exercise caution along the Plettenberg Bay coastline. This warning follows an incident yesterday afternoon where a surfer had his surfboard nudged (pushed/bumped) 3 or 4 times by a shark while he and a friend were surfing at The Wreck (a popular surf spot at the end of Robberg Beach on the Robberg Peninsula). The surfer, 33 year old Clinton Nelson, from Kommetjie, Cape Town and his friend, 29 year old Matthew Luckman, from George, were in the surf about 30 meters off-shore waiting for wave sets when what appeared to be (according to them) a 4 to 5 meter White Shark appeared and nudged Clinton's surf board 3 or 4 times (it appeared to Matthew that the surf board was being bumped or pushed left and right). Both men caught the next small wave to shore and neither of the two men were injured. They have reported the incident to

Lisa 082 971 5595 Snippets for the week We continue working in Kwanokuthula, spaying and removing dogs daily. There are just so many unwanted which are not homeable, as they have spent their lives in the streets, with no human contact. We have also found an area where every third dog has TVT. Sadly, these dogs have to be euthanized. Hopefully, we should have this area under control within the next 6 months. Our case regarding the burnt dog has been post-poned to July. I will continue keeping in contact with the public prosecutor and fight for animals fights. How dreadful to think to the elements and I cannot help but fell so terribly sorry for them. Thank you to Dr van Reenen, who waited patiently on Friday evening, for us to catch a monkey that had entered a power station and got herself electrocuted. Sadly she died on Saturday. Strange that nature conservation would not help and passed the call to the Parks department of the municipality , who were not available. Sometimes easier to get the job done yourself. Thank you to Joy from Gecko for all your help over the last 2 years. Your donations of dog food has fed so many hungry dogs. It is much appreciated. As the charity shop is our only means of income to support our sterilization project, we are always desperately needing goods for re– sale. We are really very low on jerseys and jackets and any donations would be welcome. A big thank you to everyone who supports us!
