Well, just in case we thought yet again that Winter was over, the chilly weather had a little nip at us. Glorious overnight rain has washed our beautiful Bay and delighted the gardens. Our student festival is just around the corner… Matriculants, be strong, this is the final haul! This week, may we all remember that * our success, fulfillment and happiness depends on our ability to relate to people effectively. The key to relating to others is putting yourself in someone else’s place instead of putting them in their place. Treat people the way you want to be treated: Encourage, Appreciate, forgive, Listen, understand. See people as assets, not adversaries. The word ‘we’ is the most important word in the English language.* John C. Maxwell Have a fabulous fun-filled week!!

SLUITINGSDATUM: VRYDAG, 18 NOVEMBER 2011 AANSOEKE NA: Guest were invited to have a prelaunch peek at all the changes… We were very impressed! When Greg and Cindy bought the old Filly Fusion in 2006 many folk told them they had bought a ‘white elephant’. The building has now been transformed into a Regal Landmark. The spacious balcony area with comfortable seating has wonderful views over the Bay and lagoon. Inside are comfy couches and a yellowwood bar with a dance floor, to accommodate all, no matter what your mood. Greg bought Zanzibar in Knysna a while back and has always enjoyed the ambience and energy there. Groups of all ages feel comfortable and happily mingle or couples chill alone. He has incorporated some of the elements of Zanzibar Knysna into Zanzibar Plett , but Zanzibar Plett is less rustic. The lighting and palm trees in the interior are similar. Zanzibar Plett will specialize in Extravagant Cocktails and alcoholic desserts. An ideal venue for an after dinner treat and relax or to party. Zanzibar in Plett will be open every Friday during the low season period and more often during the summer season. There will be live entertainment and for security and to compensate the artists there is a door fee. Zanzibar is also a beautiful venue for special occasions. Karen Zoid will be the opening act on 4th November. As a performing artist Karen has held onto an enviable integrity that allows her to speak her mind in a way that only earns her more devotees and proved no barrier to being named Best Female Artist at the 2008 South African Music Awards. Zoid's super-charged rock energy is an ability to write gorgeous, delicately rendered songs. She says that all the other aspects of her music career can be work, but playing live is what she loves.! Tickets R65. Don’t miss her!

Red Tide has come to Plett in full bloom! It is not unusual that the Red Tide is occurring at the moment. It usually occurs during the spring and summer time due to the south-easterly winds. This phenomenon is due to upwelling and is also known as Algal Bloom. Colder nutrient rich water hits the continental shelf and rises up to the surface creating a murky red colour. The sun shines on the water and the phytoplankton blooms causing a higher concentration of particles. It brings a high level of nutrients, however; it can be toxic and is harmful to animals feeding on algae. There is often a depletion of oxygen caused by algae as it starts to decompose. This causes many creatures to leave the ocean and come ashore in search of oxygen and end up stranding themselves. Caroline Johansen, Orca Foundation. MUIR OOGKUNDIGES… uit u oogpunt gesien. Logan van zyl’s upcoming surgery Our son, Logan, was diagnosed at the age of one with Moebius Syndrome. This is an extremely rare congenital neurological disorder, characterized by facial paralysis and the inability to move the eyes from side to side. Just after he was diagnosed we were contacted by The Smile Foundation and through their generous support, Logan was put onto a waiting list for surgery. Last month we were informed that Logan’s operation will take place at the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital on the 8th November 2011. This is a very specialised operation where a muscle will be removed from his thigh and implanted into his face. Eventually he will need two such operations, but only one can be performed at a time. The recovery period of swelling and discomfort lasts about a month, whilst the nerve recovery takes four to eight months. We have been so overwhelmed and blessed by the support and caring of so many people around us. The time ahead will be difficult
for us, but knowing we have the support of people like you certainly helps. Please know we won't forget your kind gesture. Thank you again from the bottom of our hearts. We will keep everyone updated during this very difficult time ahead for our family. ILLEGAL ADJOURNEDMENT OF COUNCIL MEETING
We would like to bring to your attention that Cllr Brummer has once again contravened the rules of order and had fundamentally misconceived his role as speaker during the Special Council Meeting of 26 October 2011 , this proves that The honorable Acting Justice Ms Cloete AJ was correct in her judgment that Cllr Brummer’s attitude “ is fundamental at odds with the constitution entitlement of members of a council as set out in section 160 (8) of the constitution [ viz , to participate in council proceedings in a manner that is consistent with democracy” Moreover according to Cloete AJ , “Cllr Brummer lost sight of the fact that his directions must be lawful”. It is not surprising that Cllr Brummer refused to be lawful in his conduct as
Mangold Point Michelle: Tel No 044 533 6986 Cell: 071 297 2541 look forward to seeing you the speaker because Cloete AJ did in her declaratory relief found that Brummer’s insistence on his entitlement to apply the rules in a “ mechanical and autocratic manner as well as the release of a series of “ one-sided and partisan “ statements “ The probability is that he will continue to exercise his powers as Speaker in this manner , thereby infringing the constitutional right of ANC councilors to participate in the business of the council and to enjoy free political expression at its meetings” . Cllr Brummer has since illegally adjourned the meeting without following the rules of order, however he is fast to ask ANC councillors to adhere to the rules. In terms of Rule 8 The Speaker has powers to decide when and where the council meets but has no powers to adjourn meetings of council as and when he feels like , in this case the Speaker refused to adhere to Rule 48 of the rules of order and the latter reads as follows: 1. A member who has not already participated in the debate on the matter then before the meeting may at any time except during the course of the speech by another member or while a vote is being taken move that the council do now adjourn to another date . None of this happened during the meeting. Subsection 2 of rule 48 states that : ( 2 ) Such motion must be seconded but need not be in writing. This also did not happen, this is leaving us with more questions than answers as to why the meeting was adjourned in such a manner that disregard the law that governs our council. We are calling on the Speaker to reconvene the meeting within 48 hours and if he fails to do so we will be compelled to take the matter to court and you will pay the cost. Mpakamisi Phakie Mbali

Ek het gister by Melville Spar brooddeeg gaan koop. Ongelukkig was alles uitverkoop. Bitou Business Buzz ADJOURNED...once more. After a constructive Mayoral Committee meeting last Wednesday a Council meeting followed under the guidance of the speaker Councilor Brummer. In his opening address he highlighted the unsavory fact that several Council meetings in the past had to be adjourned due mainly to different interpretations of the rules of order. In the interest of Bitou and the running of Council he proposed a change to the position of speaker. As this is an internal matter to be decided by the ruling party, Councilor Brummer proceeded with the meeting. Once again, due to different interpretations of an item on the agenda, vociferous reactions occurred followed by an official leaving the Council Chamber… adjournment! Not much else to report so I will continue writing about certain events happening over the years. The year 31-012002. The 'Old Rectory' a building of significant historical value to the town was once again debated with the help of the Simon van der Stel foundation. 14-03-2002. The concept of covered parking at Melville centre was discussed at Council level. The ground on which the facility would be built belonged to the Municipality and the proviso therefore was that there be no cost to the general public for parking. 11-04 -2002. PAWS -Plett Animal Welfare Society- was established with Di Butlin as first chairlady and Pierre Koep as deputy. 25-04-2002. A document, the Signage Policy, was passed by Council covering all aspects of advertising including flags and aerial displays. 27-06-2002. The name 'Greater Plettenberg Municipality' was changed to the 'Bitou Municipality'. The name of the town Plettenberg Bay would remain. 25-07-2002 saw the establishment

Visit us in the Lookout Courtyard Main Street Plettenberg Bay of the shopping mall 'The Market Square'. It has the only traffic light in the municipality...rather unique in the Republic. 12-09-2002. Traffic law enforcement made its debut in the form of 35mm cameras and flash equipment. Interesting was the fact that 35mm negative film had to used due to the fact that digital pictures could be altered afterwards' I wondered if this still applies at present! All for now. News from PAWS Volunteers give of their time and effort to ensure the continuation of PAWS, generously supported by the Plett. community. We are fully committed to our PRO – LIFE mission statement and intend to weather the current serious lack of funds for our daily running costs. The rumour that we are ”closing down” is unfounded. The community gave generously over the years in raising funds for the PAWS premises project(PPP). Some headway has been made recently and we are positive that this project will finally be coming to fruition. In the interim, since these funds are exclusively for the premises and may not be used by us for our daily running costs, we are forced to cut certain areas of our service, for example: we will not be assisting in financing the spaying and neutering of dogs and cats. The slump in the economy means that more people turn to us for assistance with their animals; more people abandon and abuse their animals; and most seriously but understandably, less money is donated to keep our service afloat. Until recently, we were able to provide food to all those who dipped their pets and to those in dire need.

Church Street, Tel: 044 5332530 / Fax: 044 533 4240 printshop@mweb.co.za www.helloplett.co.za Unfortunately our supplier of broken bags of food has discontinued supply to all welfare organizations. This means that our only supply of food is coming from the generosity of shoppers who place food in the baskets at Pick ‘n Pay; Spar and Kwikspar. Our priority is to give this food only to the animals currently in our care. PAWS has been promised an allocation from the LOTTO and until this comes through our primary focus will be attending to medical emergencies and continuing our daily dippings. Over time since the inception of these dipping clinics, we have seen far fewer animals riddled with mange, worms and illnesses which would ordinarily have been left unattended or ignored. This does not mean that abuse and neglect in all sectors of the community no longer occur – it is sadly still happening. We held an adoption day at The Market Square on 22 Oct. and had our adoptees at The Fun Day on 30 Oct. but are still looking for homes for the following:

Hello everyone, finally we broke the ice over the weekend. It’s been very hard for the past weeks for the boys but credit to the entire team for the job well done. The hard work that the coach is doing at training is now beginning to pay off. To the entire management at large, I wanna say “Thank you for your faithful support”. To our supporter’s “You guys are always inspiring”. To my players “well done and thanx for commitment & enthusiasm, the confidence is coming back, keep up the good work.” Our 1-0 victory was delicious but we are now focusing on our upcoming fixture. We are playing away tomorrow (04/11/11) in Cape Town against F.C Tygerberg at 19H00. The last time we played in Cape Town we lost and we arrived late, but what can we do? We will be leaving at 8H00 am again because we don't have resources so I can only wish the best to you boys and go there, fight and make us proud. From: Team Manager WOW! HAVE you tried the Calamari Salad at The River Cafe. It's delicious!!! 044 533 3815

Chatterbox on Routine
With an OCD person, routine is very important. Unlike regular people we never share an early morning Cup of coffee in bed leisurely discussing life. As soon as the Gazelle (previously known as Beloved) leaves the bedchamber, I am out of the bed like a shot. First thing make the bed, insuring that the bedspread is even all round. Then on goes the dog cover (my dogs think our bed is their bed too). This also has to be measured. Never know 'House & Home' might pop in. The days lists are carefully rewritten in order of importance.. . . . Notice yesterday was a bad day. Not much done but I was not feeling well. After the bed comes the bathing (actually showering time) everyday the same thing. Routine - first the hair is wet and shampooed. Then the face is cleaned. After that comes the all over body scrub - hair rinsed - conditioner in. Check elbows, give extra scrub cannot bare scaly elbows. Rinse 0ut conditioner, brush the teeth etc. Special towel for hair and one for the bod. Next comes the hair tonic recommended by a friend for hair loss and more re-growth. Keep fingers crossed while rubbing in the magic muti. Still notice mountains of hair on the floor tho'. Next spray on the suntan and mind the excess on heels and knees. Dead give away, so out comes the cleaner for all purposes - spray the above mentioned and brush off brown debris. Comb hair with wide toothed comb and leave tonic to dry. Meanwhile curlers are switched on. The dog bowls are removed from the bedroom and put in their spot. Dustbins are emptied after the curtains have been opened and TV switched onto SKY in the lounge and STYLE in my bedroom. Next comes the cup of coffee with what

The dressing is a sport all of its own. Only half of what is in my cupboard, no a third, actually fits. Keep eyes on STYLE program, maybe I have something similar to try. This is a very tedious job and I have packing boxes that get the thin clothes. That is for the day this diet finally works and I can leap back into my size tens or at least twelves. Dash downstairs to feed my chickens (the peacocks and guinea fowls. Finally I am ready to get out the cleaning kit to get the house in tip top condition even tho' Annie my trusty assistant was here yesterday. Examine garden and turn on sprinkler complete with timer in my pocket. First put in wash load. Eventually I am ready for my 'creative room' my 'art room' and everything is lying in straight stripes on my work top waiting to be attended to. With great faith I leap in and rack my brain for ideas. None comes, so pull out the canvases - nothing, cannot even think of a subject and then dash downstairs to move the sprinkler. Dash back upstairs only to hear washing machine is strangely quiet, dash downstairs again and hang the wash out. Move the sprinkler and decide as creativity is not there today, so will go to do the shop things, but first there is the face. Cannot move out of the house with no face. Big Routine. Finally leave home,
do the groceries and other things on list and back home. . . .people in Joeys ask what I do all day????? love CHATTERBOX FOR ALL rural, life style, and conservation properties phone Elbie 082 569 2588 Sotheby’s Int Realty JACQUI BOTHA PHYSIOTHERAPY 3 Lion Roars House, 82 Longships 044 5331283, 0826562979

Teams bring news from the frontlines to Plett Shoppers Shoppers get insights about emergency medical relief work in Libya and Somali Crisis refugee camps when fundraisers visit Melville’s Corner and The Market Square over the next two weeks PLETTENBERG BAY – Over the next two weeks, a group of MSF Face-2-Face Fundraisers will visit Melville’s Corner (31 Oct-5 Nov) and The Market Square (7-12 Nov) to speak to people about the medical humanitarian work MSF does. Many of the far-flung countries MSF works in face unimaginable disasters and conflicts which are often forgotten by the South African media. This summer holiday season our F2F teams hope to engage people by bringing the reality of MSF’s work at the frontline to shopping centres in five cities along the coast from October to December 2011. MSF’s ‘Frontline/Coastline’ tour, which will include Mossel Bay, George, Knysna, Plettenberg Bay and Port Elizabeth, also hopes to raise support among shoppers to
help MSF continue its life-saving work in 65 countries around the world. By talking about the realities our doctors and nurses witness in the field, our F2F fundraisers will show how donors are a vital part of what MSF does by enabling independent humanitarian action. Our South African MSF field-workers can attest to the importance of private funding for our work: Garret Barnwell, from Knysna, is currently helping to coordinate MSF’s medical activities in the autonomous northwestern Somaliland region of Somalia. Somalia is experiencing a severe food crisis, but two decades of ongoing conflict makes it even more difficult to reach those who really need help. Jonathan Whittall, MSF South Africa’s Emergency Coordinator, has helped set up activities in Pakistan, Libya, Bahrain and Afghanistan in the last 6 months. These are all highly insecure places where MSF refuses government funding to keep our work fiercely independent. Dr Yashoda Manickchund, a Capetonian, most recently worked in Ethiopia, conducting nutrition assessments and has worked to set up feeding programmes in strife-hit in areas bordering Somalia.
Nature’s Valley Trust - Programme Director Post The Nature’s Valley Trust (NVT) is a registered non-profit conservation organisation (025-306-NPO) based in Nature’s Valley (near Plettenberg Bay) on the Tsitsikamma Coast. The NVT, which has been in operation since 2001, was initiated by the Nature’s Valley community and its mission is: “To maintain the long term environmental integrity of Nature’s Valley and surrounds by becoming proactively involved in issues that impact on the future of the area”. A challenging Programme Director post is available. The Programme Director will be expected to take ‘ownership’ of the Nature’s Valley Trust in order to grow and develop this dynamic NGO. The Programme Director will operate from the office in Nature’s Valley and must have their own car (any travel done on behalf of the Trust will be compensated for). Salary will be market related. Details of the post are available on the NVT web-site: www.naturesvalleytrust.co.za. A letter of application and CV should be submitted via Fax (086 514 5946), E-mail (info@naturesvalleytrust.co.za) or Post (P.O. Box 230, The Crags, 6602) on or before 15 November 2011.
• Only short-listed candidates will be contacted • • The NVT reserves the right not to make an appointment •
Dr Santhuri Pillay, from Durban, presently works with the emergency obstetric team in Sierra Leone, a country still trying to pick up the pieces after the devastation of over a decade of conflict. These are just some of the snapshots that our F2F fundraisers will be giving shoppers about places where MSF works to bring life-saving medical care to people in need, including South Africa. We look forward to seeing you there when we bring news SOMEONE you know had a baby? or do you have a new neighbour? Someone who did or achieved something special... please let us know. Census 2011 Have you been counted? To date, there have been 16 000 cases of people who refused to be counted. There are now four cases before the courts of which two are in Gauteng, said Nomonde January of Stats SA’s legal services. Participation in the census is compulsory. The mop-up phase will be a time when Stats SA ensures that all questionnaires have been collected. Refusals to participate in the census, and those that have not yet been counted as well as those who have chosen self-enumeration will also be dealt with. From 15 November to 15 December 2011, Stats SA will embark on a post enumeration phase where workers will go out into 600 enumeration areas to recount some households to test the quality of information given. Those undertaking the post enumeration survey will be identifiable by blue uniforms. It will also measure the undercount, with chief statistician Lehohla hoping that it is not a double digit figure as was in the past. In the 1996 Census, the undercount was 10 percent and 17 percent in 2001. Lehohla said he was pleased with the progress of the census so far. Deputy DirectorGeneral for population and social statistics, Kefiloe Masiteng, said the census will give an indication of how far the country has come. The census asked all people within South African borders about their access to water, electricity and sanitation among others. Census 2011 results are expected in November 2012. - BuaNews Tuesday 1 November

Plettenberg Bay's Robberg 5 and The Waves beaches awarded Blue flag Status. Launched in November 2001 as part of government's new coastal legislation, the programme has seen the number of beaches being awarded Blue Flag status grow from three in its first year to 27 this year. Speaking at the national launch of the 2011/2012 Blue Flag season in Kenton-on-Sea, Environmental Affairs Deputy Minister Rejoice Mabudafhasi said the programme's success in the country could be attributed to the commitment of participating municipalities to provide beachgoers and holiday makers with world-class beaches. "We must offer a well-managed natural environment, safe, clean and well-managed facilities and environmental education initiatives, while creating employment and tourism opportunities for our communities," she said. She also praised efforts by different municipalities in developing their beaches and maintaining their
• Irrigation • Maintenance • Water Purification statuses, adding that the country should aim for a Blue Flag coastline. National Blue Flag programme co-ordinator Ted Knott said Blue Flag status should be the benchmark and not an exception for South Africa's coastline. "The programme should have a radiating effect. Those beaches or marinas adjacent to Blue Flag beaches, boats and marinas should also maintain an equally high standard. Those municipalities managing Blue Flag beaches are showing that high levels of excellence and delivery of services can benefit both local and international visitors," said Knott. Other Eastern Cape beaches awarded Blue Flag status include Kenton-on-Sea's Kariega beach, Jeffrey's Bay's Dolphin beach, Port Elizabeth's Humewood beach, HARKERVILLE SATURDAY Market: beautiful handmade art & crafts: woodwork, paintings, jewelry and discover our new forest teagarden N2 midway between Knysna & Plett from 8-12 BIGGEST SELECTION of Bolts & Nuts fasteners @ R&H Hardware, Marine Way 044 533 6621 EMPLOYMENT WANTED.
