Safety tips from Sea Rescue's educational arm, WaterWise; to keep children safe during the Easter holidays:

The Easter holidays are upon us and WaterWise encourages you to have a safety plan in place before you need it. Make sure that key people in your group know who to call in an emergency and that all family members know what to do if something goes wrong. If a child is separated from your group have a pre-agreed meeting place. Programme cell phones with the relevant emergency numbers before you need them. Children should always have responsible adult supervision when they are in or near water. Statistics released by the Medical Research Council show that the greatest number of drowning accidents occur amongst children aged between 9 and 14. At the beach swim only where and when lifesavers are on duty and swim between their red and yellow flags. Rip currents are the greatest cause of drowning accidents along the coast. A rip current is a river of water that flows fast out to sea against the incoming waves. Anyone caught in a rip current will realise they are being swept out to sea faster than

If you are caught in a rip current: 1.Do not panic and do not try to swim against the current. Let the current take you out to sea. It will not take you more than a few hundred metres and will not pull you under the water. There is no such thing as an undertow in the sea. 2.Raise one arm in the air and wave for help to alert people on the shore that you are in trouble. 3.The rip current force gets weaker the further out to sea it gets. At your first opportunity swim parallel to the beach until you are free of the rip and then use the incoming waves to aid your progress to get back to shore. Slippery rocks are dangerous. Never turn your back on the sea. A- Ask: Ask an adult to watch you when you swim. Always tell an adult where you are going and when you will be back. N- Never: Never swim alone. Never swim with your clothes on. Never drink alcohol and swim. Never swim if you are too ... tired, hungry or cold.

Pennypinchers Easter Surfski Challenge The Pennypinchers Easter Surfski Challenge, supported by PPC Cement, will once again form part of Plettenberg Bay’s Easter Games which will be in full swing with a host of sporting events spread out over the course of the Easter long weekend from Thursday 5th to Monday 9th April, 2012. The increasingly popular Pennypinchers Easter Surfski Challenge has been dubbed the “best lap course in the world” by iconic paddler Jasper Mocke. Rightfully so, with Saturday's main singles event being a grueling 20km paddle between Plett’s Central beach, Robberg and Keurboomsstrand, with the added challenge of running the gauntlet through the notorious Keurbooms River mouth. Equally as tough, the 18km doubles event, held the following morning, will have teams punching the surf from Central Beach, heading across the bay and around the point of the Robberg Peninsula to reach The Island, where they’ll return back along the same course. For the kids and aspiring youngsters keen on getting stuck into this popular sport, the Kiddies Guppy race will take place in the calmer waters of The Keurbooms Lagoon, to run in conjunction with the main singles event. “We’re hoping to top last years entries with an equally enjoyable two days of paddling, Plettenberg Bay is known to be buzzing with adventure -seekers over Easter and we are sure that this event will once again attract the country's finest surf ski paddlers to compete,” said event organizer Wayne Craig. Letter via the Editor SAY NO TO MORE TOLL FEES We are expected to pay up to R18 BILLION over the next 10 years just to collect toll fees. Together we can make this whole thing fail - as it should. Let the toll gates stay there, not working, as monuments to people power. Let's call this the start of the SA Awakening, look what the normal people are achieving in North Africa with the Arab Awakening. People should not install the transponders but still use the highways and force the government to issue accounts and summonses to all motorists until such time they drop the prices. The government will be forced to send out millions of accounts every month and they don't have the manpower to do it. This is the best and easiest way to boycott the system. What is the government going to do about motorists from other neighboring countries that don't have these transponders?

Rotary Golf Day Despite early thunder and lightening in the morning, which put off some of the players, the Rotary Gold Day held last weekend was a great success. The bulk of the money raised will go into the Bursary Fund which assists local students to further their tertiary studies. Saturday was not a good day to say the facts and I think Fatigue and pressure is catching up with the players but can be fixed. We are back to the basics this week, taking it slow while we are preparing for this weekend game. We are playing Milano F.C. This Saturday in Cape Town at 15H00 and it will be a tough encounter as Milano are currently leading as far as the log is concerned. Development team played against Pirates last week and they lost 2-1 and on Sunday they crushed Arsenal F.C 6-1. It was good to see that these boys have what it takes and believe me soon they will be playing top flight football. “Watch the Space” Well this week it’s Easter Tournament and both of our teams will be available. As we all know that we have a pool of players in our camp, so one team will go and play the League game in Cape Town and the other will be participating in our Local Easter Tournament. Our idea of a real exciting time was sneaking into the geese enclosure during breeding time. We had been warned the geese would go for us, but what the hell lets see... One day a lady goose chased me for what seemed like miles after I dared to go near her babies and then she bit me so HARD behind my legs I had a hard time hiding that from Aunt Nellie. Another lovely thing to do was help my aunt turn that thing that seperated the milk. We were not little, we were about fifteen...I don't think todays lids have seen a real cow. At milking time we would go into the shed and fell about as we got crapped on by the cows and then slipped and skated across all that lovely stuff. Of course punishment was we had to wash our own clothes and washing machines were yet to be invented. Going into the house during daylight hours was completely forbidden - todays kids do not see sunshine until holiday time in Plett and well the machines went to the

beach with them plus their cell phones. On the farm we had party lines - so you had to lift the receiver and check if the line was busy before you used it. These phones were shared by a lot of farmers. At night Geraldine and I would listen in to all the conversations . Some were very interesting to say the least and our imaginations would run wild. Back home in Kisumu or wherever we were resident at that time, my biggest surprise of all was coming home from school and finding Mom had cut up some of her circular skirts and made me really cool dresses that stood out with all the net petticoats you could russel up. They were starched with sugar water, can you imagine a nice sweaty day. We also had hair "pieces" this thing consisted of hair? whatever and preset into little curls all underpinned. So you just washed your own hair, put it in a high "pony" and then attach this "piece" to the top - thus making SO FASHIONABLE. When mini skirts first came out during Mary Quants rein - remember Tiggy - I used to roll my Knee length skirt up under my shirt until everyones eyes stood on stalks. I tried this one day when Mom was around and collected a good smack around the earhole and taken home. When my father was posted to Voi during the mau mau (Voi was a prisoner of war camp) we had no toys as such there was no room so we made our own dolls and drew faces on planks and that was it. There was a public shower at voi made of corigated iron in a sort of rondavel shape and for some reason it had a lot of old nail holes in so for entertainment us kids to go and each take up a nail hole and watch whoever was showering. Another education There was a lady who had long real red hair - she was our favourite. Enough said lots of love Chatterbox.

Our New Car Guards

Bruce Richardson, chairman of the Plettenberg bay Community Policing Forum, the new body which is coordinating the car guards gives some information ... “Car Guards” fall into 2 categories. There are car guards who have gone through a selection process, been security screened by the police, signed a code of conduct, given id’s incorporating a colour photograph and who wear green caps and shirts on which is written Plett Auto Watch. There is also a very distinctive number on the front of the shirt which identifies that particular individual. They are required to appear fully uniformed at all times and their ID should be pinned to the front of their shirt. As part of their code of conduct they are not permitted to ask for money. It is up to the individual motorist as to whether to reward them for their services. If any of the Plett Auto watch members is reported for asking for money, their uniforms will be withdrawn and they will no longer be part of the scheme. They are certainly not entitled to in any way threaten or make any motorist feel uncomfortable. The other “car guards” are a sundry bunch of drunkards, beggars and street kids who are not authorised to act in the capacity of car guards but who don various uniforms ranging from luminous orange, green and yellow vests to the orange shirts or jackets which is part of the old car guard uniform on WHAT'S NEW IN PLETT - 5 APRIL 2012

which appears the logo of Bitou Municipality and even imitations of the current uniform. The PBCPA, Municipal Law Enforcement and SAPS regularly monitor the guards, confiscate unauthorised uniforms and eject the individual in question from the area in which he or she has been acting as a car guard. Ultimately, however, as long as motorists pay these unauthorised individuals, they will return to the streets and constitute a security threat in the CBD and elsewhere as a result of which the ultimate solution is the education of residents in and visitors to the town. If the unlawful car guards constantly face scrutiny by motorists who then decline to pay them, such persons will eventually give up and leave the streets. We also need the co-operation of motorists in reporting errant behaviour so that we are able to deal with the individual in question. Such reports should be made to the PBCPA helpline which should appear under AA PBCPA on the cell phone of every resident in Plett so that in any emergency the number will appear as the first item on their contact list. In closing, the PBCPA and other law enforcement agencies support the Plett Auto Watch scheme as it both helps to prevent crime and creates an opportunity for the less privileged to earn an income. The challenge is to keep the authorised participants on the streets in a properly disciplined format and to keep the unauthorised imposter off the streets. Conversation Corner While on our boat trips many people ask me what the white stuff is on Robberg. It kind of looks like someone took white wash to the rocks. Well there is a very simple answer. It is bird guano. There are many Cape Cormorants that roost on Robberg and they are roosting in a staggered formation and often one above the other. When they leave their dropping, it runs down the side of the mountain leaving the very white look along patches of the mountain. These birds often nest and feed in flocks and are found in the bay year round. They are very good diving birds often seen by divers eating the fish on the reefs. Because their feathers lack the oils that other birds have to maintain good health for their feather and to repel water, they are often seen waving their wings gently in the wind to dry them. Matthew 16:15 [MKJV] "He said to them: 'But who do you say I am?' Towards the end of His earthly ministry we find Jesus and his disciples in the Golan Heights in the northeast of Israel in the area of Caesarea Philippi, near the ancient city of Dan, situated 25 miles north of the Sea of Galilee and at the base of Mt. Hermon. Caesarea Philippi - called Banias today - is the location of one of the largest springs feeding the Jordan river and a place where Pan, a Greek pagan god, was worshiped, and it was here that Jesus asked His disciples, saying: "Who do men say Me to be, the Son of Man?" After they had given Him a variety of answers Jesus suddenly dramatically changed the focus of the question and asked them: "But who do you say I am?" Now it had become very personal indeed. This, my dear reader, is still the most important question being asked even today in 2012, and the anwer and response to that simple question will determine the quality of your life today and your eternal destination hereafter. Just like Jesus' disciples initial answers, there are millions today who come up with a wide variety of suggestions: He was a wonderfully gifted teacher, a great prophet, an outstanding historical figure, a human rights activist of the first order, etc. And, yes, He was all that, but much more: Jesus of Nazareth was [and is] the Son of God and God incarnated; the Lord of lords. Of all the disciples present that day Peter got it right when he answered: "You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God!" It was then that Jesus said: "Blessed are you Simon, son of Jonah" and then He added these significant words: "For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father." [Matt.16:17] This truth is still relevant today as well and only those who seek Jesus Christ with all of

The Scriptures state: "God did this so that every person will bow down to honor the

name of Jesus. Everyone in heaven, on earth, and under the earth will bow.They will all confess, "Jesus Christ is Lord," and this will bring glory to God the Father." [Phil 2:10-11 ERV] My prayer today for all of us is summed up in the words of Leonard Sweet and Frank Viola, that we will "Make Christ the center; make Him the circumference and fill the difference with Him as well."
