It as so beautiful to see the many sky lanterns just before the spectacular fireworks display. The little ones with us were just a teeny bit more in awe than us older folk. Thank you to everyone who makes this annual tradition of fireworks in Plett so special and also a big thank you to all who released the sky lanterns, many of which also sent messages of goodwill and fun and happiness out into the world (and in some cases, just as far as the neighbours gardens…) A whole lot of added fun. We hope that this too, will become a great annual tradition. It would be super if someone could design one that the children could send off under supervision. The big ones are great for big people... Have another fabulous fun filled week making the beginning of 2011

Op 29 Desember het die Griekwas nou hul gewoonte elke jaar, in die hoofstraat in Plettenbergbaai geloop en sing. Tydens die sang het hulle straat kollekte opgeneem. Jare der jare gelede het hulle voorvaders so in die Kaap en in die Noordkaap by die Oukiep myne om geloop en deurmiddel van straat kollekte geld ingesamel vir die regering van daardie tyd. Elke jaar 29 Desember vat hulle definitief terug na vervloë tye. Die meeste van die wat in die kore is, onthou net die prentjie soos hy oorvertel is. Maar soos met geskiedenis is die meeste goed wat jy weet oorvertel. Dit moet voel soos vir die meeste “Freedom Fighters” se kinders. Slegs gehoor daarvan, maar met die vertelling oor die jare heen voel dit asof jy presies weet wat op 16 June gebeur het. Jy was in die hitte van die ‘Struggle.’ Vir die Griekwas is dit gelukkig vandag een groot avontuur. Vir hulle het dit nog nooit oor bloedvergieting gegaan nie. Vir hulle was dit nog altyd net die lof. Om te sien hoe ander mense dit geniet. Om te voel en te weet God leef onder hul lofsange. Dit is presies wat gebeur het op 29 Desember 2010. Plettenbergbaai het weereens verstom gestaan. Toeriste het stil gestaan en hulle letterlik vergaap. If your New Year’s traditions consist of trying to find someone to kiss at midnight and breaking a few resolutions, you are seriously missing out. Where is your lucky colored underwear? Why didn’t a tall good-looking dude bring you whiskey for good luck? And why didn’t you throw dishes at your best friend’s door? There are some incredible New Year’s traditions out there and we’ve rounded up the best from around the world Spain - Stop whatever you’re doing at midnight and get out your grapes. In Spain, revelers eat 12 grapes, one for each chime of the clock. They bring good luck for the 12 months of the new year. Scotland -The first person to walk through your door on New Years sets the tone for the rest of the year. At least, according to the Scottish tradition of “First footing.” The best luck will come from a tall, dark and handsome man bringing you a giftpreferably whiskey. Netherlands - Time to clear out the Christmas tree by dragging it into the streets and lighting it on fire. Supposedly, this gets rid of the old before ringing in the new, but mainly it just looks like dangerous fun. Brazil If you’re in the vicinity of Ipanema beach, you can fill a boat with candles and flowers and push it out into the water. Make a wish, and if the tide takes the boat out to sea, your wish will come true. Japan Start laughing! Think of something funny at midnight and let loose. Ringing in the new year with laughter brings good luck. Denmark Hope you’ve been saving your old plates, because it’s tradition to throw them at friend’s doors! The more broken dishes you find outside, the more friends you have. Then, at midnight, Danish partiers get on top of their chairs and jump off as a way of leaping into the new year. Philippines Dots are in! Circle shapes are seen as good luck (think coins!), so put on your best polka dot outfit and start eating round fruit. 12 fruits at midnight to be exact. Central and South America Central and South America If you want to get lucky on New Years, you better remember your lucky underwear! In some South and Central American countries, bright underwear is considered good luck for the new year. Red skivvies will bring love and put on some yellow lingerie if you’re hoping for money. Ireland Get out the bread and start hammering it against the walls. The bread ensures plenty of food for the next year and banging on the walls drives out evil spirits. Germany If you want to celebrate German style, leave a little of the food you eat for dinner on your plate to ensure plenty of prosperity for the new year. Then get out the flame and all your extra tin because it’s time to drop
molten metal into ice water. You can interpret the shapes to learn something about the coming year. For example, a blob that looks like a heart or a ring means marriage! You got that? Put on your red underwear, then your polkadot pants. Place 12 grapes in your pocket for later and set your Christmas tree on fire. Then, find a good looking dark-haired male and get him to bring you whiskey. Next, stop by your friend’s house and hurl dishes at their door before heading home to drop molten metal into ice water. If you have any extra time, slam bread against the walls and make a wish over a boat filled with flowers. At exactly 12 am, jump off a chair while laughing hysterically. to the Bitou Municipality for introducing the idea of releasing those romantic lanterns from Central Beach and elsewhere on News Year`s Eve. They were an innovative and delightful idea, and the sight of the lovely, silent lanterns, with their luminous orange glow, soaring above the town and floating out across the bay to disappear into the night was memorable. I hope the lanterns will become a permanent tradition in Plett, and I for one will look forward to seeing them again next year, replacing the hackneyed and noisy fireworks with charm-and just a little magic. I thought Plett had a No Fireworks policy and that this year special candle balloons were going to be released instead of the fireworks. My main concern were the results on the animals of Plett, It sounded like war had broken out, and I saw many absolutely PANIC struck dogs bolting in the streets. 2010 final moment was in hype and happy moment for both residents and local artists as it started by Wednesday Words an event that took place every Wednesdays at Afrocentric Night Club by Kreation Klothing a company behind the local famous brand KAKILE of Lebo Leluma a young that I am still struggling to get hold of, to find out more about these popular T– shirts in the townships. The last Wednesday event was opened by live performance from Nicotee followed by the battle of the MC`s which attracted audiences from as far as Knysna to pack Afrocentric as local rappers were battling it out for the number one spot and microphone was hot to handle as there were no chance takers all the artists who participate were dope, at the end of the day M- Cya from G Prez won the battle eliminating Loyd Gee in the finals where they decided to go accappela and both were crowned favourite and the winner took home half the money of gate taking. What a good platform for expression as it is good for young people to express their anger and frustration through spoken words than in booze, drugs and other negative things, so thanks to Lebo and his Kreation Klothing hoping that as from now on Wednesdays people will feel the Kakile movement at Afrocentric Wednesday Words. On Thursday KwaNokuthula was still a place to be as Afrocentric again hosted Ajax aka Sypfo the Generation star, then on Friday it was New Year Eve Party at Central Beach. Yes Plett Central beach is a place to be during New Year Eve and New Years Day as it accommodated people from the entire Southern Cape. I was caught with surprise when I met people from Durban saying they only came in for New Years eve and new years day as they had heard that it is rocking. In the new year ever the party animals were entertained by live performances from the likes of Bon– Playaz, Garveys Ghost and local Dj`s that included dj Chapa and Mjilo who

I thought that since there is no beach anymore at Lookout, blacks and whites will both celebrate new year at central beach at it was usually the place for whites on new years day, while the blacks used to be at Lookout beach, but we are still separated. Maybe God need to destroy all the beaches and leave us with only one beach where we will all have to be together and learn to understand each other at least. It is 16 years after democracy. The Fairy's New Year Gift
by Emilie Poulsson Two little boys were at play one day when a Fairy suddenly appeared before them and said, "I have been sent to give you New Year presents." She handed to each child a package, and in an instant was gone. Carl and Philip opened the packages and found in them two beautiful books, with pages as pure and white as the snow when it first falls. Many months passed and the Fairy came again to the boys. "I have brought you each another book?" said she, "and will take the first ones back to Father Time who sent them to you." "May I not keep mine a little longer?" asked Philip. "I have hardly thought about it lately. I'd like to paint something on the last leaf that lies open." "No," said the Fairy; "I must take it just as it is." "I wish that I could look through mine just once," said Carl; "I have only seen one page at a time, for when the leaf turns over it sticks fast, and I can never open the book at more than one place each day." "You shall look at your book," said the Fairy, "and Philip, at his." And she lit for them two little silver lamps, by the light of which they saw the pages as she turned them. The boys looked in wonder. Could it be that these were the same fair books she
had given them a year ago? Where were the clean, white pages, as pure and beautiful as the snow when it first falls? Here was a page with ugly, black spots and scratches upon it; while the very next page showed a lovely little picture. Some pages were decorated with gold and silver and gorgeous colors, others with beautiful flowers, and still others with a rainbow of softest, most delicate brightness. Yet even on the most beautiful of the pages there were ugly blots and scratches. Carl and Philip looked up at the Fairy at last. "Who did this?" they asked. "Every page was white and fair as we opened to it; yet now there is not a single blank place in the whole book!" "Shall I explain some of the pictures to you?" said the Fairy, smiling at the two little boys. "See, Philip, the spray of roses blossomed on this page when you let the baby have your playthings; and this pretty bird, that looks as if it were singing with all its might, would never have been on this page if you had not tried to be kind and pleasant the other day, instead of quarreling." "But what makes this blot?" asked Philip. "That," said the Fairy sadly; "that came when you told an untruth one day, and this when you did not mind mamma. All these blots and scratches that look so ugly, both in your book and in Carl's, were made when you were naughty. Each pretty thing in your books came on its page when you were good." "Oh, if we could only have the books again!" said Carl and Philip. "That cannot be," said the Fairy. "See! they are dated for this year, and they must now go back into Father Time's bookcase, but I have brought you each a new one. Perhaps you can make these more beautiful than the others." So saying, she vanished, and the boys were left alone, but each held in his hand a new book open at the first page. Letter via the Editor I was quite sad when I heard on Algoa News that we were not going to have fireworks in Plett for New Year and that instead we were all supposed to set off sky lanterns. Although I couldn’t afford to buy a sky lantern it was very beautiful to see so many over the Bay just before Midnight, but I have to tell you that my heart really soared when the traditional fireworks filled the sky with magic and many colours. Thank you to whoever organized them again this year. Let’s add to traditions… don’t let’s always think that the new is better than the old. Let’s embrace and enjoy both. Ban Fireworks in the suburbs, but keep the wonderful, controlled, once a year fireworks display Plett has become renowned for . Restoration of Our Timber Shed
Johann Jacob Jerling obtained a contract to build a timber shed near what is today the ski-boat launching beach, where the huge boles could be stored until it was possible to ship them out. This “Houtschuur” had to be 200 feet long, 22 feet wide and 13 feet high and all the woodwork had to be of yellowwood. Johann Jacob owed this considerable betterment of his fortunes to the strong demand for timber for a variety of purposes at the Cape, where it was needed for the construction of wharves, bridges, ox wagons, buildings and other essentials. Today the timber shed, twice partially restored in the past 200 years, is a National Monument and among Plettenberg bay’s oldest historical sites. The walls were made of huge blocks of stone, fitted together without any cement. The strong but untrained workers used only a simple block-and-tackle to fit the stones into place. The sturdy walls were then covered with a slightly sloping reed roof to keep the timber dry. Unfortunately one clause in Jerling’s contract specified that the timber work must be of yellowwood, timber that is not durable for any length of time, when exposed to the elements. Within only 16 years it was reported by the next official to come this way that the reed roof had fallen in, and that the yellowwood lintels were collapsing, especially on the south side under the koppie. This meant that the structure had soon become a useless building. On the 29th of September 2010 the Plettenburg bay local municipality appointed a historical precinct advisory committee to give proposals for the restoration and preservation of the timber shed. At the council meeting on the 8th of December the committee’s proposals was favorably agreed to by the municipality. The next step for the committee is an appeal to the National Heritage council for approval of the restoration of the timber shed. The plans for the restoration of the timber shed are as follows: Stone from the fallen walls will be used for reconstruction. This work must be done by a skilled stonemason, so that the restoration work is identical to the original stone walls. This is possible, and can be seen on site. In 1983, reconstruction of the southern wall was done, and it is a perfect match to the original wall. The original roof was a flat roof and was defective from the start. Thus was decided that the roof will be reconstructed as a “modern” flat roof, using locally treated timber and modern technology, with a touch of the old use of “vleiriet” for esthetic purposes. Resulting in a modern flat roof that will not leak and that will only be visible from above. Making the building user friendly will require for it to have a floor. The original opening will be upgraded and doors and
shutter will be fitted, once again local timber will be used. It is planned to reconstruct the doors and windows so that they reflect the style used in the 1700. Hinges and other iron work will be done by local blacksmiths or the steel industry. On the inside of the doors and windows, weather doors and windows will be fitted to contain the elements. We want to stress that all of the above is visualized and by no means the final plans. There are many talented people in Plett, and we would like to have the communities input through the whole restoration process We Endeavour to source all material for this project from local interested parties ei. Timber, from timber industries; Sand from sand quarries ect. Initial response to this project was overwhelmingly positive. It is our aim to handle as little cash as possible. But cash will still be needed. After the restoration process is finished we, the people of Plett will be the custodians of a beautiful historical venue set in one of the most envied sites in South-Africa. It will be user friendly, and can be used for a number of activities such as: Cultural exhibitions, Art, Seminars, wedding venues ect. On the side maybe a tea garden with pre-prepared goodies by local cooks in a botanical garden setting, can be opened to the public. No kitchens, no extractor fans, no smells. As this is a nonprofit venue all revenue generated must solely go to the upkeep of the building and local children’s or other charities. A few last comments from the committee: We want to stress once again that this is only guidelines, we want to be transparent in all that we do. We are non Racial, non political and non profitable. We would like your participation, comments and proposals. This could become the most talked about project in South-Africa. We can do it! A Thought for the Week
Psalm 103: 1-2 (BBE) “Give praise to the Lord, o my soul; let not all His blessings go from your memory.” The Psalms of David are truly giving us an insight into the deep, unique and personal relationship this man enjoyed with His Creator God. One thing that comes up again and again in his desire to praise the Lord. Although he experienced more than his share of hardship and trouble in life and regularly petitioned God to come to his aid, he never- the- less always found to time to become quiet before the Lord and to bring Him praise. In the verse quoted above it is almost as though he is talking to himself and he urges his soul, his mind, will and emotions– everything that is within him– to stop for a moment and reflect on God`s goodness and to thank God for all the blessings that he has received. Maybe we, too, especially at this time at the end of the year and the beginning of a new year ought to become still for a while and think back on all the Lord has given us. Think about God`s unconditional love for us as embodied in the person of His Son,
