The slogan for Plettenberg Bay 27 years ago was “The Bay for all seasons” and the past week has been just that…sometimes all 4 seasons in a single day. Most of us had put our winter clothes further back in the cupboard, and were happily striding into Spring since we have had super summery weather and many tans have started taking shape quite nicely .. And then suddenly cold rainy weather … good for our gardens and for snuggling up… We had so many happy happenings this past weekend. Die Plaasbasaar, The PAC Kurlandbrik road race, the 4xPaws walk, the Fieldband sendoff, fundraisers, entertainment, a horse show, and more… never a dull moment if you get out there and participate. This week too has some fun things to do, so whatever your preferences have a fun-filled week in our beautiful Bay.

Chatterbox Real Shopping

Having just spent a week in Durban after living in Plett for the three years made me realize just what we are missing in the shopping line. I have been back to JHB twice since leaving, but both times had to go and sort out children problems so never really left their homes. Did notice the traffic and the drivers with murder on their minds. To get back to our visit to Durban, it was pure holiday and bonding with the family time. All I could think of while we were getting over the formalities (kissing hugging, having a few little 'dops', etc.) was “when are we going to the shops!?”. There is always a good reason to go to the shops soon after arriving

OPEN DAY 11 October 2011 - 9 to 11 a.m. We celebrate our 5th anniversary! 5 years ago, a team of local and Belgian people set up Sterreweg, a daycare centre for special needs children. Starting with 5 children and 4 staff, we have now grown to 25 children and 9 people fully employed AND we have been rewarded as best daycare centre of the Western Cape 2011! For this special occasion, we have an open day . You are very welcome to have a look at what we do. At 9a.m. the children will sing their daily morning ring, and you can see our therapists in action. Feel free to contact Tamarin on 0445332639 / diesterreweg@gmail.com or visit the centre at 2195 Keurbooms Road, New Horizon, Plettenberg Bay. Die Sterreweg -team and all the children

- bread, milk - but this time we sat as tho' we were super glued to our seats. When I finally brought up the subject I was told “tomorrow we are going to la Lucia". Finally the big day arrived and I stood in the middle of Real Big Shops with Choice and just drooled. It was like being in Fairyland and Christmas land all wrapped up in one. My instinct was to run with a trolley and just pack it with goodies. Now I am not talking groceries; that I can do in Plett and hate grocery shopping anyway, would rather wash floors with my toothbrush. No, I am talking about everything else. I stood googly eyed trying to decide where to dash first. Having Beloved hanging on my arm is never a good thing - he reels me in far too fast. This day he was breakfasting with my brother-in-law, so we had my sister (who lives there) and my 86 year old mother and my brother. He and I suffer from the same syndrome - serious shoppers syndrome. Before I could blink he was gone, Mom tried to keep up with my sister holding onto her. I would dash into a shop and salivate at the choices, then frantically try to look at everything but could only sneak in a thing or two. After a couple of hours little brother arrived back, staggering under bags of thingies. I had only managed about eight shops. We had lunch which is always what we do when away with Mom, and I was able to catch my breath and dig into a double gin and tonic followed by a bottle of wine, and then the whole family went home to 'nap'. I do it here in Plett too, so that is not different. Next day we were family bonding with a bit of arguing (about what happened in our childhood). I was delighted to see there was suddenly movement to go to Dischem. This always makes my eyes stand on end and I happily shopped there with my brother, meeting him in every isle stuffing his trolley and looking to see what I had gotten that he had not. Then it was lunch time and we were firmly ensconced in a cosy little place close to the "Bead Shop". My choice of restaurant purely because of its close proximity to my hobby shop. Once the bottles were opened and everyone was in a festive mood I snuck off to behold paradise; beads and accessories everywhere. Had to work real fast and race around trying to fit as many lovelies into a trolley as possible before I was missed at the table, and then after lunch I casually announced that I needed to pop into the bead shop, but no, they were not going to have to wait. Everything was ready for collectiion. Dashed off, quickly threw another couple of handfuls of this and that in and then raced off to meet the fam. That shop saw me at every opportunity. If anybody needed something at the shop (bread, milk, juice) I offered like a shot and first call was the bead shop where I thought I had bought everything I needed but on each occasion discovered some new hidden specialities. Staggering into

the hotel trying to look light weight and casual became quite a feat. Gateway, now there is a little hidden jewel and for that expedition I had to borrow a car and sneak off on my own. Time was running out and I had a lot to do; trying on, etc. Very tiring, you know, and worse when I said I was only going up the road and lunch was being prepared by my sister. Rushing in red faced and sweating I tried to blame my lateness on the traffic. I always forget about that flipping aeroplane that sits and waits at the airport with those officious people that do not understand about living in the stix. Usually Beloved (after he has fainted when he tries to lift my bag, plus an extra suitcase that has snuck it’s way in) has a way with those people and we have manage to sneak them all on board one way or another. This time the officious lady must have gotten out of bed on the wrong side. Nothing Beloved said would charm her, and she spotted everything!!!!! So it was pay pay. Unbeknown to her tho' this sneaky chick had acquired a zip up very large pretty bag and it was packed with beads and weighed a ton. Have you ever tried to walk casually onto a plane carrying half of Durban on your shoulder and trying to walk upright and smile a lot and even let the bag swing a very little bit? Finally, we were on our way, Beloved looking very glum and me assuring him it was all going to be worth it. I am going to make millions.....so if you see a little old lady carrying a very heavy burden of beautiful bead thingies to sell, take heart and buy at least a dozen or so, that is the spirit of Plett, not so. Open Day

On the 29th of September Wittedrift High School had their annual “Open Day”. This was for the grade 7 learners to come and view what our high school is like. I was in grade 7 not too long ago and I remember just how it felt walking into a new school. I remember feeling so small and insignificant compared to the already attending students. It was strange going from the top of the “food chain” straight back to the bottom once we entered the gates. I also felt upset and excited to start high school, upset, because I was comfortable with primary school and the friends that I had, but excited, because great things could come with the change. Many of my primary school friends went to other schools, but luckily I had a few that made the change with me. I have not just remained friends with my old ones, but I have also made new and great friendships. Wittedrift has opened many doors for me and my friends and I do not regret attending here one bit, in fact, I recommend to those that still have a decision to make to attend Wittedrift - you won’t regret it. I would personally like to give all the soon to be students of Wittedrift High a “Good Luck” and “Make the Most of it”, because it is like they say; These are the best years of our lives! Bus tragedy school head thanks donors

The headmaster of the Rheenendal Primary School - which was hit by tragedy on August the 24th when a bus in which some of its learners were travelling crashed into a river, killing the driver and 14 children - has thanked the people of South Africa for their generous support. Samuel Williams said that he and his community have been overwhelmed by the outpouring of support which has come from every quarter of the country. A fund set up in the immediate aftermath of the accident by the local newspaper, the Knysna Plett Herald, has received more than R500,000 in cash and pledges and, said Mr. Williams, food, clothing, blankets, school equipment, and offers of help have been received from people from around the country. “Every phone call, fax, e-mail, and letter, and every bunch of flowers means more to us than the senders will ever know,” he said. Mr. Williams said that a second fund was established by the school itself to cover the costs of two funeral services which were attended by some 7,500 mourners from across the Province. “Since the number of mourners greatly exceeded the number we originally anticipated, there unfortunately remains a deficit of around R100,000, which the school is presently trying to raise. “As you can imagine, the funeral period was a particularly difficult time for us, and we’re very grateful for all the help from the volunteers and caterers, and from the people who supplied the marquee, the stage, the chairs, the public address system, and the flowers. “Unfortunately, we weren’t able to make use of all the offers we received because - in the case of coffins, for example, we’d already been given everything we needed.” Mr. Williams said that all of his staff and all the children at the school have been given professional counseling, that psychologists have been available on call to help parents in the community, and that his teachers recently attended a spiritual healing weekend. Rheenendal Primary, which Mr. Williams runs with the help of vice-head Jacobus America, 22 teachers and four support personnel, has an enrolment of 743 learners from one of the poorest communities in the Knysna area. “With the help we’ve received, we now have the opportunity of growing Rheenendal Primary into a model school,” said Mr. Williams. “There’ve been no barriers in this tragedy - help has come from people of every colour and every level of society, and we have no way of adequately thanking everyone who has

Letter via the Editor

To whom it may concern Please would you be so kind as to print this letter to the editor in the What's New. As a regular donor of goods to the Bitou CVC Charity Shop since its inception, I have been so pleased to see all that has been achieved in the last year or so in our townships. Imagine my consternation this week on hearing that the funds for the spaying of dogs has depleted to the extent that less dogs will be spayed until funds increase. At a recent meeting held with the principal of the Bitou CVC we were led to believe that a substantial amount of money belonging to the Bitou CVC was invested in a money market account. Surely this money should now be used until such time as the funds from the Charity shop have been built up? Why would a non profit organisation hold an investment account when the funds are clearly much needed for the reason they were collected? I have heard rumours with regard to this issue and would like those in the know to inform us what the exact position of the Bitou CVC is and how much and to whom the funds are being applied. It would be a joyous day if the principal of the Bitou CVC would reply via this forum so that any rumours that are unfounded may be nipped in the bud immediately and at the same time easing any doubts that donors or prospective donors may have.

I think this is only fair considering we, the concerned residents of Plett, are by lieu of donations, funding the Bitou CVC. A VERY concerned citizen of Plett We referred this letter to the CVC and received the following reply: To: A VERY concerned citizen of Plett and all interested parties: The Bitou CVC would like to extend their sincere appreciation for all the goods the public and you have donated to the Bitou CVC Charity Shop. As the charity shop deals only in cash, a substantial amount is paid towards deposit fees each month, and so it was decided to create a money market account earning interest every month to try and neutralise these fees. This money market account was established from a fundraising event in 2010 and not from the shop. In October 2010 we embarked on a massive sterilisation and vaccination drive in Kranshoek, New Horizons, Bossiesgif, Welkom and Kwanokathula. At first the funds from the charity shop were sufficient to support this effort, however since February 2011 there was a shortfall every month and the money market funds had to be used to sustain the campaign. As the shop funds are our only source of income, we have to keep some funds available in time of need. This was decided at the meeting mentioned in your letter. Our main monthly fixed expenses have always been Rent, Staff Salaries, Municipality, Car Insurance, Cellphones. The main variable expenses are the sterilisation and vaccination fees. We currently have funds to sustain us for two months and rely heavily on the income from the shop to keep up with our campaign. As the sterilisations is the only thing we can really control, it was decided to reduce the monthly number till there are more funds available. Donations received up to now have already made a huge difference. The attitude of the people in the townships show this.. We are approached on a daily basis by the people to help sterilise their pets, which shows that they are becoming responsible owners. For this to continue we need all the help and support from the public. As this is an SAVA (South African Veterinary Association) initiative we all realise that the sterilisations and vaccinations are vital to stem the tide of animal sufferings in our country. It seems to be working here! Thank you to all who have made it possible thus far. Bert van Reenen Principle. Protect the endangered manatees

The manatee is a large marine mammal with teeth, a thick grey and wrinkled skin, two flippers and a large flat tail. He is completely herbivorous, slow-moving and extremely gentle. We find him in shallow waters where sea grass growth is stimulated by sunlight- like estuaries, slow-moving rivers, saltwater bays, canals, coastal areas, etc. Despite the fact that manatees don’t have any enemies, they face many threats and are close to extinction today. Indeed, as they are mammals, they need to surface regularly to breathe air, every 3 to 5 minutes; consequently, the most important cause of manatees’ death are collisions with powerboats and their propeller. The destruction of their habitat caused by human development is also a threat, as well as the ingestion of fish hooks, litter or natural diseases. On top of that, manatees have a low reproductive rate. Thank you Sister Jess, for always going beyond the call of duty, Sister Bev, Sister Martha and all the efficient, caring, amazing nurses for all that you did for our precious mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. To Judy, Nicky and Yvette, thank you for all you’ve done and still do for the frail care patients. Winnie thoroughly enjoyed her 90th birthday party at Strombolis. We cannot thank everyone enough for making Mom’s special day so wonderful. Winnie will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew her. Love, Len, Maud, Antoinette and family

Letter via the Editor To Heidi, Thank you so much for the fantastic result after I took my precious Chicco to your new venture in town. Pet Grooming Parlour.. Chicco drew much attention when he went with me to Market Square and his ribbons just suited a 16 yr old , and he walked with a spring in his step knowing he looked as everyone thought a puppy again. One sees the love you have for our loved and privileged four legged friends. The work you do for so many neglected and injured animals is awesome. From Chicco and me…. Welcome and may your new venture go from strength to strength. God Bless. From Chicco and Jess.

EMS Unit opened at Kwanokuthula

Beulah Wakfer 1930-2011

Passed away peacefully in Plettenberg Bay with her family by her side 28/09/2011. She was much loved by her daughters Charlotte, Lynette and Kathleen, sons-in-law Graham, Johann and Denzil, grandchildren Grant, Kyle, Catherine & Mark, Victoria & Warren. Damian, Nicholas and Aime, great grandson Ethan and sister Maureen and family. You were the rock in all our lives and the many, many memories we have of you will never fade.

The Western Cape Minister of Health, Theuns Botha, officially opened the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Kwanokuthula station on Monday October 3, 2011). Aimed to service the Bitou District community of approximately 60 000 occupants, the station will service the communities of Harkersville, Kranshoek, Wittedrift, New Horizons, Kwanokuthula, Bossiesgif, Welcome Location, The Crags, Covie and Natures Valley. Western Cape Government Health has prioritised the establishment of health facilities in communities, locating them closer to communities, ensuring better service delivery and public accessibility. “It remains the target of this provincial government to establish a health facility within easy travelling distance for every citizen that depends on our health services. In line with this vision, the ongoing maintenance of infrastructure remains a priority. The Western Cape provincial government’s current investment in capital projects and upgrades are the most that this

Province has been working on at any given time,” says Minister Theuns Botha. Based in the heart of Kwanokuthula, located next to the Kwanokuthula Community Health Clinic and Police station, the ambulance station was designed to meet the specific needs of the Bitou District community. The EMS station is equipped to handle both medical and rescue emergencies and provides a waiting room for patients being transported on the HealthNET (patient transport between facilities) ambulances. The Brand New Beacon Island

Plett’s been abuzz about the big re-furb at the Beacon Island Resort, which necessitated a closure of two and a half months, and everyone who has seen the new BI since its opening on 1st October say it is looking great!. Congratulations to all concerned! Here are some of the interesting facts about the process. 200 bedrooms were refurbished with 200 bathrooms rebuilt in just 77 days. On the day of closure, working like a colony of ants, all the linen, mattresses, bed bases and operating equipment was removed. By 21h00 everything that needed to be stored away was covered or locked. The last guest had barely left when the jackhammers started removing tiles. The Maintenance team collected light fittings, fans, curtain rails and beadings. The indoor pool patio area was remodelled, a new stage was built for entertainment, a dedicated crockery and cutlery collection point, as well an a new umbrella store. New air conditioners installed in the Sea Lounge and Lookout Room. Heat pumps were converted to

Mangold Point Michelle: Tel No 044 533 6986 Cell: 071 297 2541 look forward to seeing you a hot water/chill air system, a new heat pump was installed for the indoor pool. Major repair work was done in and around the building. In their quest to become Green and a responsible tourism destination, the Beacon Island has as part of its Environmental management program already reduced energy usage. A Monitoring, Archiving and Control unit was installed as part of the Eskom Demand Side Management programme. A +/- 10% auditable and verifiable reduction has been achieved, which qualifies the Resort from potential ECS penalties and at today’s rates equals R225 000.00 saving per year. The 1,5 litre kettles were replaced with 750ml kettles reducing energy usage from 2.2kw to 1.2kw to boil. Compressor minibars were replaced with absorption cooling system mini bars, Guest room windows were replaced with Solarvue neutral HL, which stabilises the temperature, reducing use of fans and heaters Power saving Television panels were installed. LED bulbs are used. The old plumbing system has been replaced by a more efficient one, eco green shower roses were installed reducing water usage. The newly installed guest room toilets have a dual flush system, Separate showers were installed for convenience. Active recycling is practiced with guest and staff participation. The aim is to be a responsible landmark hotel: visually, with guest satisfaction and to be able to achieve both in a sustainable clean, safe and looked after environment.

The New Island Diner

Have increased their salad options and also have great vegetarian dished to tempt. The old favourites are back with great pizza, pasta and sushi for all. The dessert offering has also been changed to cater for all tastes. Coral Reef will re-launch to be the first fully organic restaurant in the garden route with very select and unique meals .

Underwater enthusiasts have eagerly awaited the re-opening of Prodive which took the opportunity to give the Dive centre a complete facelift. Philippians 4:19 [ERV] “My God will use his glorious riches to give you everything you need. He will do this through Jesus Christ.” Paul was able to make this statement because he knew from personal experience that God had always come through for him. There are, however, a few important criteria contained in this wonderful promise that we need to take note of. First Paul categorically states: “My God”, making this extremely personal. His relationship with God was intimate and real - to him God was not just some higher Being far away, but a very personal God. We also know this from his second letter to Timothy where he writes: “I know the One I have believed.” [2 Timothy 1:12b] Next, Paul states that God “will use his glorious riches to give you everything you need.” Note that the text does not say that God will give us according to our needs on the condition that we perform according to his standards; on the contrary, this is not something we can earn or buy, but God gives to His children in his mercy and grace. Note, also, that the verse does not speak of our wants – this is not a matter of “name it and claim it” as

some would want us to believe. God is our heavenly Father and as such He will care for us as a responsible and wise father does, giving us what we need and what is good for us and not necessarily what we want. God’s ultimate aim in giving to His children is always two-fold; He gives us what is best for us and what will ultimately bring most glory to His name. Finally, the key to all of this is found in the words: “...through Jesus Christ.” It is Christ Who, by His death on the cross and His resurrection from the dead, has made it possible for us as human beings and sinners - who were alienated from God - to reconcile us with the Father. In his letter to the Romans, Paul writes: “For if when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God through the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by His life.” [Rom. 5:10] Do you have any needs today? Perhaps you are not feeling well and need physical healing; or your need is for material help or it might be spiritual in nature and you need God’s forgiveness and peace. Whatever your need – call on the Father in Jesus’ name and allow Him to “…use His glorious riches to give you everything you need.” Henk. Records tumble at Otter

The OTTER African Trail Run, presented for the third time this year by sponsors Hi-Tec, once again saw off-road runners blaze along this legendary trail in the Garden Route National Park. A total of 200 endurance runners took on the 42km ultra run in the hope of improving on last year’s blitz of 4hrs47min. It is no wonder the OTTER African Trail Run has been dubbed ‘The Grail of Trail' by local organisers Magnetic South. This magnificent coastal run traverses the beaches and sea cliffs of the Eden District from Storms River Mouth to the laid-back village of Nature’s Valley, and there is no doubt it will soon rate as one of the most desirable trail runs on Planet Earth. Two runnings of the Otter Trail route are sanctioned by SA National Parks, who open the trail to runners only one weekend every year under the most stringent of environmental considerations. “We understand this exhilarating race showcases the natural splendour of one of South Africa’s favourite national parks,” SANParks management said in a statement after signing an historic agreement with event organisers Magnetic South. The concept of the OTTER African Trail Run was the collective brainchild of brothers John and Mark Collins. Together with presenting sponsors Hi-Tec and nutritional sponsor GU, they set their sights on the impossible dream of ‘a 42km trail marathon along an unspoilt wilderness coastline’. Numbers obviously need to be limited, so only 200 athletes are allowed to do both the Run (Friday) and the Ramble (Sunday). It is also most certainly not within everyone’s physical ability to do the Otter Hiking Trail in a single day, but last year Doctor Andre Gie proved a point by setting a blistering time of 4hrs 47min. The magical 5hr barrier was first broken in 2009 by KZN runner Iain Don-Wauchope, who set a time of 4hrs 59min. Sedgefield local John Collins followed suit during the second running in 2010, but Gie made sure his glory was

This year, a total of 400 eager endurance runners were given the opportunity to take on both Collins and Gie, and rumour has it that they were gunning for the 4hrs 30min mark... This year the race, saw a star-studded field assembled at Storms River Mouth, including SA’s trail running star, Ryan Sandes. Fresh from his victory at the prestigious Leadville 100 mile Ultra Marathon in the USA, he would for the first time contend with a full-strength trail running field from all over the country. Perfect weather saw the runners set off along the Otter singletrack just after sunrise, with the front bunch consisting of big guns Sandes, Andre Gie, William Robinson, Bruce Arnett, Greg Goodall, John Collins and local runner Victor Gugushe, from Plettenberg Bay. No quarter was given as they blasted along the forested coastline, with Sandes and Arnett moving into a two-minute lead by the halfway mark at the Lottering River crossing. From here, the hard graft really starts to kick in, with three major climbs and the treacherous Bloukrans River crossing lying in wait. At Bloukrans, Sandes had extended his lead over the chasing Arnett to six minutes with the classy field behind these two strung out along the coastal paths. In the end, Sandes’ superb class was just to good for the rest of the field. He steamed in across the floating bridge finish in an incredible time of 4hrs 40min, decimating the current record by more than 7min. “In the last nine kilometres I was feeling it, but what a stunning route and a privilege to run here. Swimming across Bloukrans River was definitely a first for me in a trail race!” said an elated Sandes at the finish. A strong women's field saw Su DonWauchope triumph over a tenacious Robyn Ferrar, with Landie Visser claiming a well-deserved third place. All sub-five hours competitors have their names engraved on the ‘Otter Grail’, a trophy especially designed for the event, but this amazing race is also about the brave endurance athletes further down the field. In the end, ‘The Otter’ constitutes a single day brimming with incredible adventure and memories which will last a lifetime. “This race never ceases to amaze and humble me”, said Race Director Mark Collins. “Once again, we saw an impeccable display of athleticism and running, especially from those who battled home in a gruelling twelve hours”, he continued. Superb
