This year marks 100 years since International Women’s Day was first observed on 8 March 1911, with women around the world demanding equal rights, a right to vote and improved working conditions.. We honour and thank them all. Our lives are so much better than they could have been. Still a lot of work out there though in the countries and communities where human life and particularly that of girls/women is not valued as highly as it should be. The fight is not over! We have been having absolutely fabulous swimming weather… (not quite so good if you couldn’t spend a lot of time in water). It really felt like there is a dome over Plett creating our own sauna… Please Lord, Let it rain… Have a fabulous week filled with fun in our beautiful Bay.

Classic Car Show Plettenberg Bay will be the venue for an inaugural Classic Car Show to be held at the Country Crescent Hotel, Piesang Valley Rd on Sat 19 March from 10am to 4pm. Exhibitors from as far as PE and George will be bringing their Classic Cars to the show. Organiser, Graham Yendall, said he expects between fifty to sixty exotic cars to be on display such as Alfa Romeo, Aston Martin, Bentley, Cobra, Lotus, MG’s, Porsche, Dart, E-Type Jaguar, and a Ferrari 308 GTB1 plus a few more interesting models. A selection of retail stalls will add interest to the Show and the hotel will offer catering and a beer tent. The Garden Route is becoming a mecca for car enthusiasts who have amassed interesting car collections. They include well-known ex-racing drivers who have retired to the Garden Route. There will be a wellknown DJ who will act as commentator on the event and visitors will be treated to a drive-by to taste the sound and smells of the exotic cars on display. A R20 entrance fee will be charged which along with other contributions will go to The Herberg Orphanage. According to Yendall the event is planned to become an annual affair.

Easter Surf Ski Race
supported by PPC cement Plettenberg Bay’s Offthehook Events will once again be hosting the Pennypinchers Easter Surf Ski Race supported by PPC cement on 23 April 2011 at Central Beach. The event, now in its 4th year, will feature a premier Singles ski race, a Development and Youth race and a Social paddler’s event. These diverse offerings are aimed at encouraging paddlers of all ages and skill levels to get involved, with participants sure to flock to the event which features courses visiting some of the Garden Routes most beautiful beaches. Event organizer Wayne Craig said that “with this family-oriented event we hope to create a buzz around Plettenberg Bay during the Easter weekend, benefitting the Plett community whilst maintaining a competitive element”. Registration for the event will occur at Offthehook Seafood Café on 22 April between 3pm and 6pm, as well as at Plett Surf Lifesaving Club on the morning of the event. Craig also said that “the events are very spectator friendly, with many vantage points along the route. Race safety is also a major concern to us, and thankfully we have the Plett NSRI (Station 14) on hand to oversee the water safety of
the event”. The three races on offer are designed to cater for a diverse cross-section of athletes. The first race, the Youth and Development race, is aimed at those young paddlers who may not yet have the confidence or ability to race in the open ocean. As a result this race will take place in the shallow Piesang Valley Lagoon which runs alongside Central Beach. The second race will take place across open ocean, although the distance and route will be appropriate for social and intermediate paddlers. Finally, the Singles event has been designed with top professional paddlers in mind, in terms of both distance and technicality. Prize money for the main event will be R 7 500 for male’s. The first 100 entrants will get a free cooler bag, t-shirt, boerie roll, Hansa and a great time, whilst the first 50 entries will be entered into a lucky draw where three lucky people will win a weekend in Plettenberg Bay, including bed & breakfast, supper, petrol and lots of fun. Once the racing has been completed, there will be live music and a beach party at Central Beach. Human Animal Interactions are good for us! Many studies have been conducted looking at the benefits of human/animal interactions. Most of this research looks at the mental, emotional and physical benefits on people of all ages who have pets, or who have access to dogs or cats in hospitals or care homes, (for example, Friedmann et al, 1983; Siegel, 1990; Allen et al, 1991; Melson, 2002; Daly & Morton, 2006) This research has contributed to the growth of a therapeutic model, known as Animal Assisted Therapy, (AAT). Therapy is conducted with the help of dogs, horses or dolphins to help people who suffer from emotional, behavioural, or physical health conditions develop new social, cognitive or developmental skills. A small scale project was conducted in Plettenberg Bay to see the emotional impact of going on a

Kotaro Fukuma, Piano Monday, March 28, 2011 Born in Tokyo in 1982, Kotaro started learning piano at the age of 5. He has studied at the Conservatoire National Superieur de Musique de Paris, at Universitat der Kunste, Berlin and the International Piano Academy, Lake Como, Italy. Since his debut recital in Lincoln Centre, New York, Kotaro has performed more than 50 concerts in the U.S.A. Major venues include, Wigmore Hall, London, Philharmonie, Konzerthaus, Berlin and Opera City, Tokyo. At the age of 20 he won both First Prize and the Chopin Prize at the 15th Cleveland International Piano Competition in 2003. Mr. Fukuma is currently based in Berlin. BITOU BUSINESS BUZZ 'COMING TOGETHER' concept is taking shape with the first precinct plan, namely New Horizons, well on the way. The old library has been demolished with most roads together with parking facilities ready for the building of the new library. I spoke to the contractor and he informed me that everything is ready for the foundation to be started early next week. This will a two week process followed by the construction of the building. While we are on the subject of the library I wish to repeat the fact that no decision as yet been taken regarding the central library in town. Some people are taking it for granted that the town library service will become part of the New Horizons library, this at present has not been decided. The moment I have the result of the decision from Council I will inform everyone of the outcome. I visited the shops close to the construction site to inform the owner/manager of the latest and future developments. They seemed to be pleased about the upgrade of the road, pavements and the planting of trees. One owner was especially enthusiastic about the location of the Magistrate's Court as he was convinced that it would keep some undesirable elements away from the area! The contract date for the completion of the library and surrounds is January next year although the contractor hopes to finish by this coming December if things go according to plan. Greetings, Ald. (Common names: Snake flower, cat’s tail, burn jelly plant, Balsem kopieva, cobaia, geelkatstert, Khomo-yaNtsukammele, sehlare-sa-pekane, sehlae-sa-mollo, Intelezi) These are very popular rockery plants and good for flower arranging. It is one of nature’s finest medicinal plants. The fresh leaf produces a soothing jelly-like juice that is wonderful for burns, rashes, blisters, insect bites, cracked lips, prickly heat, acne, cold sores, mouth ulcers and areas of cracked skin. This plant is ideal to grow if you have children as it is a first aid remedy for daily knocks and scrapes. The Rastafarians use B.frutescens to treat similar ailments. They make an infusion of a few fresh leaves in a cup of boiling water. The strained drink is taken for coughs, colds and arthritis. A warm poultice of the leaves applied to affected area of the body is used to treat excema, arthritis, insect bites, areas of cracked skin, sunburn, rashes and burns. It is a succulent perennial plant with stolons which grow up to 30cm. Straw coloured leaves grow in a rosette pattern. Many 5mm long yellow flowers are borne on a single stem. They should be planted in well drained soil containing compost. Propagation is easy from either seed or division of clumps. They also make interesting indoor potplants. SMALLHOLDING HOUSE to rent. Recently the van Plettenberg Historical Society had Dr Janette Deacon speak on the matjes river rock shelter. It was fascinating and we thank her for sharing it with us all.
CHANGING TIMES AT MATJES RIVER ROCK SHELTER By Janette Deacon Location and history Matjes River Rock Shelter is on private property above the western bank of the mouth of the Matjes River, a small stream a few hundred metres east of the beach at Keurboomstrand. It was declared a national monument in 1960 because it is one of the largest shell middens in a rock shelter in the world. Since the National Heritage Resources Act (Act 25 of 1999) replaced the National Monuments Act, all former national monuments have become Provincial Heritage Sites and in the Western Cape are managed by Heritage Western Cape in the provincial Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport in Cape Town. A ‘midden’ is simply a pile of discarded food remains such as ash, shell, vegetable matter and bone. This one, which is about 30 m long, 15 m wide and 10 m deep, tells the story of the people who lived there between 10,800 and 1,000 years ago against a backdrop of the climatic changes that took place worldwide during that time. Mussels and limpets were a major food source and have added to the bulk of the midden. Over 100 people were buried in the shelter, most of them children. In 1928/29 the first archaeological excavations of the midden were undertaken by Prof T.F. Dreyer, a Zoologist at the University of the Orange Free State. After World War II, further excavations were done in 1952-57 by Dr A.C. Hoffman of the National Museum, Bloemfontein, and Dr A.J.D. Meiring of the State Museum, Windhoek. They were interested mainly in the burials in order to identify the hunter-gatherer people who lived there. In the belief that most of the graves would be against the back wall of the shelter, they dug away all the midden in that area, and put a trench at right angles to it in the middle of the midden, thereby isolating two piles of deposit that are no longer supported by the rock wall. They concluded that the inhabitants were the ancestors of the San (Bushmen) who were joined within the last 2000 years by ancestors of Khoe herders. Some 40 years later, Prof H.J. Deacon, head of the Department of Archaeology at the University of Stellenbosch, conducted further
excavations in 1993-94 and the results were reported in a MA thesis by Willemien Dockel. The purpose of this excavation was to test whether the earlier work had reached the base of the midden (it had), and to obtain radiocarbon dates on the shells to correlate changes in sea level, and therefore climate, over the past 10,000 years. Unfortunately, erosion of the top of the midden caused by wind erosion and people trampling on it, had already removed the most recent 4000 years of the deposit in Layer A. The results of all three excavation seasons confirmed that the rock shelter was occupied by Later Stone Age hunter-gatherers who made stone and bone tools and shell ornaments, collected shellfish, fished, hunted small game animals and seals and collected plant foods such as bulbs, herbs and fruits from the coastal forest. They lived on the midden, made fires there, prepared skins for leather clothing and made hunting, fishing and gathering equipment. Graves were sometimes covered with powdered red ochre, and sometimes with large stones – one of which had an enigmatic painting on it – and a few were accompanied by shell and ostrich eggshell ornaments. Changes through time Over the time that people have lived in Matjes River Rock Shelter many changes have taken place. Artefacts Layer A (4000 to less than 2000 years ago): a few potsherds at the very top, a few stone tools, a stone sinker, beads of shell, ostrich eggshell and tortoise shell, small antelope bones Layer B (4700 to 6700 years ago): stone and polished bone tools for working leather, seal and fish bones Layer C (6700-7900 years ago): well made small stone tools and ornaments, burials covered with red ochre Layer D (9600-10,800 years ago): large stone tools, bone ‘fish gorges’ Economy and lifestyle A major change in economy took place when, between 1000 and 2000 years ago, Khoe herders came into the area and left behind some sherds of the pottery they made to store milk products from their sheep and cattle. They also hunted and collected shellfish. Their lifestyle contrasted with that of the earlier San hunter-gatherers. Shellfish - Changes in shellfish species reflect changing climate over the past 10,000 years. During the Last Glacial Maximum which peaked at 18,000 years ago, there was so much water locked up in the ice caps at the north and south poles that sea levels worldwide were 130 m below their present level. At that time you would not
have seen the sea from Matjes River rock shelter. Global temperatures began to rise and the ice caps began to melt from about 14,000 years ago. Layer D has mostly white sand mussels and black mussels indicating a sandy beach, lower sea level, and colder sea temperature. At this time (between 11,000 and 9000 years ago), the ice caps at the north and south pole were continuing to melt but the sea level was not yet as high as it is now. In Layer C there are more limpets indicating a rocky shore as the sea level continued to rise. In Layer B, the predominance of brown mussels indicates warmer sea temperatures. At this time (56000 years ago) it was slightly warmer worldwide and the sea level was about 2 m higher than at present. The earlier excavators reported brown mussel shells in Layer A but as this layer was absent in the 1990s, the numbers of shellfish species could not be confirmed. Conservation challenges For some years after the rock shelter was declared a national monument, a caretaker was employed to be present at the site during school holidays and at weekends. After the caretaker died, no-one was appointed to replace him. Visitors walked on top of the midden and climbed the steep slopes, and the fence and notice board were broken. When the excavations were completed in 1993, a wooden boardwalk was constructed with the help of the National Monuments Council, CapeNature and local donors to keep visitors away from the top and sides of the midden. Sandbags were wrapped in geotextile to protect the slopes and two information boards were installed. A peel of the sections was made for display purposes. About ten years later, after damage to the geotextile and bags by people or baboons, the Keurboomstrand Property Owners Association co-ordinated repairs and put up a ladder for easier access to the forest path, and SANParks with a Working for Water team made the path safer. Because there is no sand available in the vicinity of the rock shelter to fill more sand bags, wind continues to erode the slope of the midden that has not been supported by sand bags and geotextile. The next step is to persuade some young and energetic people to fill bags with dry sand from the sides of the river mouth and carry them up the hill to the rock shelter. Snippets for the Week Happy to say that we have managed to spay a total of 123 dogs & cats this year, of which 75 were in four roads only - in Kwanokuthula. This whole area is so very over populated and some owners have up to 9 dogs to feed daily. So terribly sad that I had to remove a total of 67 unwanted, manged, old and abused animals as well. Of these animals, we managed to home about 20 little ones, as well as 2 adult cats and a 7 year old collie type female. Special thanks to everyone who saved a life by adopting. We so urgently need kennels to keep the unwanted for just a few days. Every living creature should be given the chance it deserves! Should you be wanting to adopt, please leave your details with me. I am finding sausage dogs, bearded collies, retrievers, border collies and many more. Fortunately there have been no horrible incidents witnessed this week. The Charity Shop is our only means of collecting money to continue with this project. Any donations of any sort, is greatly appreciated. Thank you Plett Housing Trust, we thank you ! A new container was recently donated to be used as a learning centre for Bossiesgif and Qolweni kids. The Learning Centre will provide a quiet place to do homework, reading, and improve education. The After School Program (ASP) in the Plett industrial area has been run by USA missionary, Michelle Smith for the past 3 years. As a free service to one of Plett’s poorest communities, ASP has grown to provide activities and food for more than 75 kids, ages 2-15 each afternoon. Heartfelt thanks to Plett Housing Trust, Mark Fourie, Paul Scheepers, and JCE containers- you all will touch many lives in providing this container! We are starting a reading club for kids, but even adults have expressed interest! It’s such a blessing to see these kids do great things when given proper resources and opportunities. Michelle is busy gathering children’s books, paper & school supplies, toys, and resource materials for the Learning Centre. We need a fan, bean bag chairs, and more books. A small, but talented team set off to East London on the 18th February to compete in the East Cape Champs, held on Nahoon Beach in East London. Onththe morning of Saturday 19 ,Plett Surf began well with Dylan van Wyk winning beach sprints for U/16`s,followed by Emilio Phekuka 2nd & Dimitri Phekuka 3rd Beach Sprints U/19`s,Lauren van Wyk U/19`s Beach Sprints 3rd,Donald rd Kgoisiman U/21`s 3 Beach Sprints. After a terrific start, Plett Surf went on to win Beach Relay for U/19`s Boys with the team consisting of Dylan van Wyk,Dougie Edwards,Emilio & Dimitri Phekuka. Thozama “Thozi” Tuka brings new sound.
Tuks-Tuka was born Thozama Tuka in PE at New Brighton, she came to Plett in 1998. She started showing interest in music at a very early stage as she used to sing along in any song the she heard on TV and radio. She said from her first year at primary school she became involved in music as she joined the school choir. While in Plett in 1999 she joined Plett Choral Music Society where she performed with the choir all around the Southern Cape and in Old Mutual Choral Festival in Cape Town. Last year September she met with DJ Menzaizo through her sister who was also working with Menzaizo
then she decided to write her own music and use the opportunity of DJ Menzaizo’s Trouble Makers Productions to record her songs. She does not have a specific word to define her music as she said it consists of diffrerent elements such as Afro pop, RnB, Jazz and House. The reason she decided to take this journey is because she believes that this is a sound for everybody of any age and race. She wants to prove to the young people that you don’t need to be rich in order to be able to release an album but use your talent in a meaningful way. She wishes to release her album this year.
