Women’s Day in Plett was filled with much fun and fabulous entertainment. The weather was wonderful too, making it an extra special day. The Hour of Music at St Christopher’s was a feast for the soul with 15 musicians under the leadership of Marie Skeen sharing a lovely selection of music —Organ, Keyboard piano, guitar, woodwind, brass and voices. What a great introduction to the beautiful new organ in the church. Many Blessings to father Johan from St. Christopher’s for a wonderful year. Thank you for sharing your birthday and Women’s day with Plett, encouraging all to stand for the values of courage, unity and strength. The movie Jane Eyre screened in aid of Plettaid Foundation was well supported, The ANC Womens league gathering was good, and girls everywhere made their presence felt, wherever and however they chose to spend the day. Wiskunde week, hierdie week speel n baie belangrike rol om van die geheime en mites die hoof te bide. Verder sê ons ook dankie weereens vir die gemeenskappe vir hul ondersteuning met ons bazaar asook die merry-go-round verlede Donderdag tot Sondag. Dit was n reuse sukses. Wat praat ons alles: Na n paar weke van doodse stilte is dit weer tyd om te praat en saam te praat.Veel het die afgelope tyd gebeur, van kwartaalverslae, sportproewe, wiskunde week en eindig met n Merry-go-round. Wat n bonte mengelmoes, ‘n lappieskombers in die kleine. Maar waar begin ek? Kwartaalverslae Dit is verlede week en Vrydag uitgehandig en baie dankie aan kollegas en leerders. U/16 National Hockey Tournament Hockey is my passion and after playing for the provincial B team for the past 2 years, this year I finally made the A team. The hard work and training had finally paid off. Besides the fact that we spend a whole week playing hockey, friendships are made that could last time. Being surrounded by like minded people and having an amazing coach is definitely a recipe for success. The SWD, which is the team that I play for, is very small compared to the other provinces such as WP, Boland and Gauteng, but it's true what they say, dynamite comes in small packages. The SWD is made up of players that are from Plett, Knysna, George, Mossel Bay and Riversdale. Nationals were held in Pietermaritzburg at the Pietermaritzburg Girls High and after 2 days spent on the road, we finally reached our destination. We were split into 2 pools of 17 and 24. We were ranked 17th in the pool of 24 teams and by the end of the tournament we were ranked 5th. I personally think we did extremely well. Over all we played 7 games and walked away with 5 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss. One thing I learned during that week is that no matter how good each individual player is, they are useless on the field if they do not
play with their team, after all, hockey is a team sport. I am very pleased to say that my team bonded well on and off the field which in my opinion is the reason for our success. We may have not won the tournament, but we had a great deal of fun together. Having to say goodbye was of course the worst part, but we all look forward to meeting again when our different schools play against each other and hopefully at trials in the year to come. The Executive Mayor made a recommendation to Council, at the Mayoral committee meeting, that the monthly income threshold for indigent subsidies be increased from R 2.800.00 to R 3.000.00. All municipalities offer free basic services to indigent households. The revenue that a municipality forfeits by offering these free basic services is covered by the equitable share that the municipalities receive from the National Government. All indigent subsidy are reviewed annually and must be submitted before or on 31st May of each year on the prescribed form. In Bitou we have one thousand six hundred and eighty five households that were registered as indigent on 30 June 2011. It is a very commendable gesture by the Government. The financial implication based on current consumption levels is R 282.23 per month per household.

Today is Friday and it is pouring with rain. On my way to work I noticed a little old lady stumbling along the road in the pouring rain. The cars were just whizzing by and nobody stopped or even seemed to notice her. I did a u-turn and went up beside her and stopped. I got out and asked her why on earth she was out in the rain. She just looked at me all confused, so I bundled her into my car and drove her home. I discovered she is 94 and had just been to the clinic. What have we turned into people? Magic in Plett
Magic has enthralled people for centuries and the Magician’s art always provides good entertainment. There is only one show taking place at the Plettenberg Bay Primary School on the 27th of August. The School Hall is the perfect venue to accommodate a show of this nature, having a large enough stage, and great audience facilities. The show is simply named Magic, but it is a far cry from a few card tricks and rabbits out of hats. This show is a stage production! With many famous illusions, and a few new ones. The show will include a Water Barrel escape that dates back to the time of the great Houdini, and walking through a Solid Window that was first done by Chris Angel. There is also a mind bending Levitation, and a good couple of disappearing and re-appearing young ladies. One of the most daring acts is the Knife Throwing, but the highlights of the illusions are the “Guillotine” that sees the magician strapped into the guillotine and loosing his head in full view of the audience and the “Industrial Saw” that slices the magician in two ! Aside from the remarkable illusions and other “magic tricks”, there are also comedy sketches, music, and fire dancing interspaced throughout the evenings entertainment. The show is suitable for all ages, although some of the illusions are Very scary, so parental guidance should apply. Do not try this at home definitely applies ! A THOUGHT OR THE WEEK. Romans 8:28 [MKJV] “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.” The Bible, God’s divine revelation to mankind and in particular to His children, contains literally thousands of wonderful promises. A definite favourite of mine is the one quoted above. Living in a world that is rapidly falling apart and having to cope with circumstances and situations that often leave us exhausted and desperate, this is a promise that gives us hope and security not only when things are well, but even in great adversity. God promises us, who are believers in Christ that He will use all things that happen in our lives for our good. Note first of all, that this scripture does not say: “For we know that some things, or most things, or many things work together for good for the believer in Christ.” No, it explicitly states: “All things.” Note secondly, that the Bible also not says that all things that occur are necessarily good, but it states that whatever things we may experience will eventually be used by God for our good. This clearly makes it a matter of faith – faith not in the circumstances, but in the One who controls the circumstances. There was a time when my wife used to make beautifull tapestries and I would be sitting opposite her
watching her making these thousands of tiny silk stitches but from my position I was watching the back of the tapestry and, to be quite honest, that looked like quite a mess. However, when I walked over to view the front, it showed me a beautiful and colourful picture. Every stitch had helped to put the tapestry together. In the same way God uses every event, whether good or bad, to put our lives together in such a way that we become a beautiful picture for Him. Note finally, that God promises to do this for those who “love God and are called according to His purpose”. God’s call, however, is not just for a few elect, but He calls each and everyone to come to Him, as the Scripture says: “Come to Me all of you who are tired from the heavy burden [of life] you have been forced to carry. I will give you rest.” [Matt. 11:28 ERV] Together with this wonderful promise Paul, the apostle, gives us the assurance that: “God never changes His mind about the people He calls, He never decides to take back the blessings He has given them.” [Rom.11:29 ERV] My dear friend God is calling you today to put your whole life into his loving hands and to allow Him to use all your heartaches and pains and every other circumstance and use it together for your ultimate good and for His glory. Letter via the Editor I enjoyed very much reading the Mayor's letter in you latest edition of "What's New". This newfound transparency is to be applauded and I sincerely hope that Mayor's letters will become a regular feature in your paper. In his letter the Mayor mentioned that Bitou was some R32 million in the red. For me this creates a small conundrum: Some time ago it was mentioned in the press that Bitou was one of the few municipalities in South Africa that had received a "clean audit" during the last financial year. This begs the question how can such a large deficit on the books be translated into "clean audit"? As I am not very literate in financial matters and I should be grateful if the Bitou economic fundis could possibly explain to us illiterates, through the medium of your paper, how the R32 m deficit could result in a clean audit. Conservation Corner Threats to our Rock shores Our rocky shores are one of the most readily accessible habits to go and explore with its distinctive zones of plant and animal life and high variety of marine life ranging from limpets and anemones to octopus. However, these diverse habitats are susceptible to human interference in many ways. The majority of pollution is brought to the sea via rivers; this includes increases in agriculture upstream, and dumping and building on the riverbanks. Sewage is also a major problem, which brings diseases to shellfish, which are sometimes eaten by us. But it’s not all doom and gloom. There are many easy things we can do to preserve this habitat. Timber Shed at Plettenberg Bay The official Historical Advisory Committee has been dissolved The great excitement and anticipation for the restoration of the Old Timber Shed under the leadership of the original builder’s descendant Johan Jerling in collaboration with the descendants of the original stone masons, and a small group of dedicated professionals has been thwarted by the second refusal record of decision by the Heritage Council Western Cape. Johan Jerling writes the following Open letter. To the hundreds if not thousands of Plett people who supported our concept for the restoration and eventual use of this wonderful tangible piece of history in our midst. It is owned by the Bitou Council, which means it belongs to the people of Plett. We, the now dissolved Advisory committee was mandated by the Bitou Council to apply for a permit to the HCWC (Heritage Council Western Cape) in order to proceed with the restoration. Alas, we were turned down twice. First time the ROD was ‘very inappropriate’ and the second time even more so, actually stating in the appeal ROD that our ‘concept is inappropriate.’ In making a statement of that nature, they are in fact saying that the people and companies that supported us are ????? To me personally an ROD like that is not only a slap in the face but also an insult to the intelligence of all our supporters. I want to stress that in Plett we have many experienced talented and knowledgeable people in the field of especially Plett History and what we, the people of Plett, want and need. Our concept of restoration would not have cost the people of Plett nor the Bitou Council any money, in other words no finance, no politics, because of the following: complete support by: The owner of the site, Bitou Municipality; Historical Society of Plettenberg Bay, a Society that is very passionate regarding the history of Plett and The Griqua Nation of SA. The following companies made material pledges of +-1.5 Million Rand (Conservative estimate) Steinhoff and PG Bison (all timber); PPC Cement (all cement); DenRon and Robberg Quarries (all concrete); Kurland Bricks; Plett Building Supplies; Penny Pinchers (lintels and odds & ends) Opihi Builders (all building work); Stonecore
(waterproofing); JCE Electrical, Roly Hill Plumbing; Jireh Custom Interiors (door & window frames); Sprinklers for Africa(irrigation); Plett Botanical Society (Gardens); Plett garden maintainers(Rotation basis). National Sea Rescue Institute – Media Release: NSRI - SEA RESCUE – STATION 14 Plettenberg Bay: Sea Rescue – Plettenberg Bay – Saturday, 06 August, 2011: Two near drowning accidents: Laurent Eray, NSRI Plettenberg Bay duty coxswain, said: "At 15h19 (Saturday, 06 August, 2011) our NSRI Plettenberg Bay volunteer duty crew were activated following reports of a surf-ski paddler capsized in the Keurbooms River Mouth and reportedly separated from his surf-ski and being swept out to sea. "NSRI Plettenberg Bay volunteers responded to the scene directly and our sea rescue craft AIRLINK RESCUER and DISCOVERY RESCUE RUNNER were launched from our sea rescue base and responded to the scene. "On arrival on-scene we found a Port Elizabeth man, aged estimated in his early fifties, being swept out to sea and now about 300 meters of-shore of Lookout Point in choppy sea swells and a 15 knot gusting wind. "The man was taken aboard our sea rescue craft and his surf-ski was recovered and he was brought safely to shore and he was not injured in the incident and he equired no further assistance. "It appears he became separated from his surf-ski after being capsized while coming in through the river mouth while returning from a paddle at sea. "Then at 16h00 (Saturday, 06 August, 2011) our NSRI Plettenberg Bay volunteers were activated to respond to the Piesang River where reports were received of a drowning in progress. (An NSRI volunteer

returning home from the previous call-out was flagged down by a pedestrian who indicated that a child was in trouble in the nearby Piesang River. "On arrival on-scene a two and a half year old female toddler was found already out of the water. It appears that either a family member or a bystander had managed to get her safely out of the water after she reportedly got into difficulties in the water but it was not made clear to NSRI if she had been swimming or wading in the water at the time or if she had fallen into the water! "The toddler, a local, was medically checked and treated by our NSRI doctor, dr. EDEN DISTRICT AMATURE BOXERS ENTERTAIN LOCAL BOXING SUPPOTERS. South Western District Boxing Organisation had once again host another exciting boxing event which was held last Saturday at Simunye Centre. The Plettenberg Bay Sonqoba Boxing Club had welcomes boxing clubs from Knynsa, George and Oudshoorn as Mossel Bay failed to make it because of transport problems. The tournament had consisted of junior and senior amature boxers and local Sonqoba was the one with many representatives in juniors and only two seniors (Lubabalo “Bucs” Ntileka and Nwabisile Cholani). The result was not what local supporters were hoping for as most of our local juniors lost their fights, until the young Theo Sonjani whose bout was the 4th. He turns the wills and brings the smile to local supporters as he demonstrated good boxing skills against a talented Joe Mafelwa from George. Theo won the 3 rounds match and became the first Plett boxer to have a win in the day. The next fight after Theo and Joe was the last bout of the juniors and the most anticipated one as it was between the favourate kids of the province, the champion and the runner up, they both represented Western Cape in SA games that were in JHB although they came back without medals their coaches are still waiting for the reports that will confirmed their participation in
Olympics games. I am talking about the young Litha Basakabini from Plett who lost provincial gold medal against the 13 years old Bulelani Blandile in Cape Town. These two kids on Saturday were fighting for the 4th time and everyone enjoys their fight whenever they play against each other although the champion from George always comes out a winner. Watching their fight on Saturday I felt like tavern can be closed when they go close to it, booze could turn to be still water or they must stay in a world where there are no booze or anything that will course them to loose the focus as they have what it takes to be world best boxers considering the fact that they are only 13 years old. Their match was obvious the fight of the day to them it was not about how hard you punch but how and when you do so. The only difference between these two fighters whom I decided to call Garden Route Finest was the height as Bulelani Blandile has a height advantage and at the end of 3 rounds he was pronounced a winner as usually but take nothing away from Basakabini, to me he is already a star. Plett need to nature his talent before we said he was good in his days, as it is usual be a case with our local talent. After the biggest fight between Western Cape champions the seniors take on stage with Lubabalo Ntuleka from Plett loosing against Unathi Fana from
George, following with another exciting fight between Plett Nwabisile Cholani who had convinced everybody that he is ready to turn professional as he displayed great boxing skills beating Puleng Mthiya of George on knockout. Plett residents will be spoiled by another professional boxing that will took place in KwaNokuthula Community Hall on the 27th of August where the main bout will be between Plett Unathi Mndwana against Mtsepuwa Anele from Cape Town. Thank you very much!!! Bitou Arts and Culture Society launched an anti-drug campaign and mural exhibition for 2011 Rugby World Cup on 27 June 2011 in the Kwanokuthula hall with Great success. They kept 300+ kids from all over Plett busy painting the soccer field with flags of the teams playing in the world cup. Please go and have a look in Kwano and see Plett businesses being represented there. Without hesitation DenRon, Plett Paint and Hardware, Penny Pinchers, PNA and Plett Building Suppliers grabbed the opportunity to give these school kids the chance to express themselves. You made my heart skip a beat cause I never thought the project would be so huge. Melvilles Spar and Yellowood Spur and the local soup kitchens made it a point to feed these kids for they saw the greatness of the project. It brought tears to my eyes to see the project off on 23 July 2011 in Kurland. The organizer, Stephen, outdid himself with a great display of culture brought forward by the community of Kurland. Robberg Seafoods and Melvilles Spar played a crucial role in feeding over 300 people attending the packed closing ceremony. Kurland community came out in numbers and the performers did not disappoint. What a display of African roots!! Kurland you were amazing. The Executive Mayor, Memory Booysen, councilors Neville De Waal (from Kurland) Elaine Paulse, Annelise Oliver and myself were treated with African Flair by the Primary schools performing. Cell Phone Mast
There has been an application by Cell C to erect a cell phone mast/ base station on the 4th light mast on the York astro. This means that if this goes ahead, there will be an extremely powerful transmitter (emitting microwave radiation) 25-30 metres from players on the astro and within very close proximity to the quarry fields, the hostel and the school. There are numerous scientific studies showing the adverse effects on people working or living in close proximity to masts and it is well known that there are NO SAFE LEVELS OF EXPOSURE FOR CHILDREN. On the 17th May 2011 a definitive scientific paper conducted by scientists at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), Brazil, has shown that "According to the study, more than 80 percent of people who die in Belo Horizonte by specific types of cancer live less than 500 meters away from the 300 identified cell phone antennas in the city”. Furthermore they “found a direct link to 4,924 cancer deaths from cellular antennae radiation”. In a recent Sunday Times article pupils from St John’s High school in Johannesburg did a study also showing adverse effects on pupils. “In their analysis, the boys cautioned that pupils should keep a distance of at least 300m from the cellphone base station. They also concluded that while cellphones were necessary, “masts should be kept away from populated areas and should definitely be kept out of schools". Headmaster Roger Cameron said: ''In light of the investigation, the school, the staff and parents are against the mast. We have instituted proceedings to have it removed”. We need numbers and as many people as possible objecting to these masts in order to stop the indiscriminate placing of these health hazards in our living areas, especially when they target schools and put our children at risk so please forward this to as many people as possible. Letter via the Editor Airport Woes As I am often at the Plett airport either picking up or dropping off passengers, I cannot help but notice the lack of anything happening. The windsock at the beginning of the runway has been tangled for the past month; some time back when a gale blew through Plett the “Manager’s” covered parking was damaged and since then it has been left flapping in the wind and slowly ripping itself to pieces while 4 staff members stand or sit by and watch it deteriorate. There has been no aviation fuel since March 2010 but the sign still remains advising incoming aircraft of Jet A1 fuel. Over the years that I have been coming to the airport and spoken to pilots, I am told that nothing has changed regardless of what one hears from the Council. If one does a fair comparison on a 100 item basket of goods, a fairer comparison can be made. Particularly in the case of fresh produce, suppliers, quality, availability all play a role in pricing. ANC Women’s League What a wonderful Women’s Day we had in Kwano! Well done to the organizers, helpers and most of all our generous donators, without you it would have been impossible. The women looked great in their League blouses, the food was fabulous. The high spirits of our people was electric it was such a nostalgic experience one not to be forgotten. Once again we were reminded of the long road to freedom, walked by ordinary women, people with passion, who were involved in the birth of Democracy. Like a woman in labor - the pain, sweat and blood must never be forgotten especially by our youth so that we don’t have a repeat of the past in this lifetime. Our greatest enemy in Plett today is just that - we forgot what was taken from us. Like Albert Einstein said “It is every man’s obligation to put back into the world at least the equivalent of what he took out of it.” How can you take a person’s bread from his mouth he had nothing at birth, got it back through hardship, than only to be taken away. RUGBY, MASSAGING AND OCD Beloved is a complete and absolute sports fanatic. He has his favourites rugby and golf. For these you will not get him loose from the couch, eyes boring into the TV as he plays along with them. Rugby is worse, he looks like someone having a sit up fit as he moves from side to side, up and down and the arms and legs all playing with the players. The house coud burn down and he would not notice except for smoke getting in his eyes. He loves the rest too 'Tour de France' is a fairly new love, but he is riding the bikes with them and feeling their pain and dissapointment as well as their joy. Soccer he will watch, not with quite such vigour. Then there is athletics - and snooker - and in fact anything with team spirit. If there was a frog jumping competition, Beloved would find it. To get back to rugby, the one where he is so active it is frightening to watch. On Sunday morning I woke up with a screaming headache - coming from my sore neck I informed. Anyway, Beloved is a good husband, in fact excellent, so he offered to massage my neck during the Australia and New Zealand game. Well now that was an experience, he went at my neck like a demon. I would get frantic masaging while the boys were running, then suddenly everything would come to a dead halt as a serious matter had just arrived in the game. Then, just like like that the frantic massaging would continue. Now let me tell you you he would not get a degree for this massaging, he would not even pass stage one. My head was ripped from side to side, front to back, almost lifted off my neck, and sometimes so hard I wanted to scream and sometimes so soft I thought he had left. I have to tell you that with this headache, I did
not mind at all and also it is quite hard to get him to do this for me so I just bore the pain - you know that nice SORE pain. He frightened away my headache away so all was well. I am a fanatical cleaner, very OCD and spend a lot of time moving things to a more accommodating place where they fit better or something. This leads to a lot of mysteries as to 'where has this dissapeared to. I has always leave it here'. The brain is extremely slow and getting slower and it takes me a few days to remember I moved this particular thing to a NEW place. It is so frustrating and especially as I spend ages cleaning out that new spot, and when I clean I clean. One would think the place is embedded in my memory. This morning I spent ages moving all my medicines to a new cupboard in one place instead of four drawers. Now watch this, because in those drawers are going my summer flat sandles, you know flops. Just imagine the next time I am rushing for a plaster, bandage or headache pill..... Lots of love CHATTERBOX GREEN POOL? The Sinobomi Events Marketing has successfully hosted this beauty event. I am told it was the first time a competition of this nature took place at the Simunye Hall where all the Plett/Knysna high schools were invited to participate at this interesting competition show. The show was aimed at giving the high school pupils the encouragement and the motivation to further and showcase their talents in the beauty contest competition, such as Miss & Mr Plettenberg Bay, where all kinds of race will be encouraged to take part, thence entering probably Miss South Africa. It was a rainy, cold day on the 5th August 2011 at Kwanokuthula Hall. This hall is synonymous with the political heated debate but this time we wanted to start engaging the youth and taking them away from the taverns and street corners. Though some of the schools could not make it due to various reasons and the bad weather, the hall was fully packed and there were no bad serious acts reported. The event was not sponsored but was well organized by Kusta and his crew. Once again we were not gathered
for political issues but the community wanted to be socially entertained by the dance groups, amapantsula and the Local DJ,s. The winners of this competition show were: Miss Plett High School: Odwa Gagela from Plett Sec, followed by Ntomboxolo Boyana from Murray High and Avuyile Pieterson from Murray High Well Done Kusta, keep up the good work you are doing!
