Site_Specific 2012 Join us at 12:00 on 14 January 2012 at the Beacon Island Lifestyle Resort The Site Specific team are launching the next step in the land for Plettenberg Bay for 2012. Site Specific has now produced a documentary book on the ground breaking land art event which took place in the town in May this year. It was a hugely succesful "art happening" - and has opened many avenues of possible development -

including Tourism for the area and of course, education focusing on the environment and creative expression, which are sorely needed. We have teamed up with the Eden to Addo initiative, and under the guidance of Joan Berning, have created a week-long 85km luxury "land art" trail for 25 people, which will join the five areas we would like to focus on in 2012. The trail will start on the 21st May 2012, and go through Kranshoek - launching the land art piece there, then on to Kwanokhuthula the next day, where the hikers will be welcomed and launch the next piece, then on to

the Bitou area, where a similar land art "launch" will happen, up to The Crags, and then to where the second permanent land art work along the Eden to Addo trail which will be produced by world-renowned land artist Strijdom van der Merwe, at the junction of the R339 to Knysna and the R340 (road to Plett). The trail will ends on Central Beach, where the project will be officially opened at the historic Timbershed on the 27th May Sunday . We hope to raise funds by auctioning off the tickets for the trail. The Eden to Addo team are highly organised with vast experience in making the trail as enjoyable as possible - and will set up top notch camps along the route, produce fabulous meals, provide transport for baggage along the route (no heavy backpacks necessary) and provide expert information on the flora and fauna of the area. During the three weeks of land art "activation" in the Plettenberg Bay area, there will be an intense workshop for potential land artists from these five areas mentioned above, who will be working with top artist and Senior Fine Art lecturer, Gordon Froud, as well as local land artists. The idea is then for the "trainee" land artists to return to their respective areas to create their own land art within their communities at their Community Hall or School, under the guidance of the local land artists, and the Site Specific team. These will then be launched as the hikers make their way along the trail - from one land art piece to the next. On the 14th of January, we will be revealing this plan of action to the local land artists, the municipality and interested public. We will be presenting copies of our book to those who have helped in the process, selling magnificent prints of the land art works that were created in May. Places on the Site Specific/ Eden to Addo land art trail will also be sold. Thought for the Week Deuteronomy 30:19 [Amplified] "I call heaven and earth to witness this day against you that I have set before you life and death, the blessings and the curses; therefore choose life, that you and your descendants may live." Life is full of choices and every day we are confronted by them - some mundane, such as what to eat or to drink or to wear; some others more important as to what job to take or which house to buy, etc, and then, there are the most important choices that pertain to one's spiritual life and well-being in the here and now and in eternity after death. Moses, the leader of Israel, had just told the people about God's plans and purposes for

them as a nation that included many tremendous blessings if they obeyed the Lord, but also some horrible curses if they did not adhere to God's words. And now, at the end of his 'sermon', he reminded them that the choice was theirs - God was not going to force them, but wanted them to choose between life or death, the blessings or the curses, and he urged them to choose life. One would immediately think: "Well that's quite simple, isn't it? Obviously the people would choose life! Well, Israel's history has shown that many of them did not, and many still don't. But, before you are to harsh on them, what about us? What about you? God's offer to Israel was wonderful, but it pales in the light of His offer to us. Israel's blessings were chiefly material and physical in nature and therefore temporary and depended upon their works more than on faith. We, on the other hand, living in the New Testament era, have an offer by God that by far outweighs anything that He offered before. This offer is embodied in the person of Jesus Christ, God's Son. Because of His [Jesus] sinless life and subsequent death on the cross where He paid, once and for all, the full penalty of our sins [including mine and yours] He, by doing so, satisfied God's demand for justice and was able to freely give eternal life to all who believe and accept this. The Scriptures put it so clearly: "And this is that testimony (that evidence): God gave us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. He who possesses the Son has that life; he who does not possess the Son of God does not have that life. I write this to you who believe in (adhere to, trust in, and rely on) the name of the Son of God [in the peculiar services and blessings conferred by Him on men], so that you may know [with settled and absolute

knowledge] that you [already] have life, yes, eternal life." [1 John 5:11-13 Amp] The key to this everlasting life, where - as the Bible says - you will experience the presence and the peace of God in the now as well as for all of eternity - that key lies in your hands: You have to chose to get it! Paul puts it like this: "Because if you acknowledge and confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord and in your heart believe (adhere to, trust in, and rely on the truth) that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart a person believes (adheres to, trusts in, and relies on Christ) and so is justified (declared righteous, acceptable to God), and with the mouth he confesses (declares openly and speaks out freely his faith) and confirms [his] salvation." [Rom.10:9-10 Amp.] I have made my choice many years ago - have you? Henk.

Our sincere condolences to the family and friends of Ayema Maziko, the two-and-a-halfyear-old child who died tragically in the parking lot at Central Beach, Plettenberg Bay during the December holidays. According to the police report, it is alleged that Ayema was playing with friends between two stationary vehicles when his toy fell out of his hands. When he got down to look for and retrieve the toy, one of the two vehicles, a taxi, unexpectedly moved forward and ran over him. According to SAPS media liaison, Malcolm Pojie, it appears that the wheels rolled over his head. He was killed instantly. A culpable homicide docket has been opened for investigation. "Allegations that the parents were negligent cannot be confirmed, nor ruled out. Rumours that the father had been arrested are also unfounded as no one has been arrested yet," said Pojie.

The World has gone mad. Can someone please explain to me when I want to transfer some money from overseas to South Africa I have to write them a letter. Firstly you phone the bank in the UK and find that the person on the line is not in England but in Bombay and all they can tell you is that you must write a letter to the bank in England. 3 rescued, 1 missing presumed drowned: On Wednesday 3 January, at 15h38 NSRI Plettenberg Bay volunteer sea rescue duty crew were activated following reports of 4 people being swept out to sea at Natures Valley, near to the Groot River Mouth. NSRI Plettenberg Bay volunteer sea rescue duty crew launched their sea rescue craft AIRLINK RESCUER and their DISCOVERY rescue runner and responded. Police and Metro EMS also responded. "On arrival on-scene it was confirmed by lifeguards that three men, aged in their early twenties, from Strand, had managed to get out of the water after reportedly getting into difficulty in strong

rip-currents and they were not injured. The fourth man, their friend, 22 year old Reno van Deventer, also from Strand, had disappeared under water. While rescuers were on the scene a further three people were helped out of the water in the same area in separate incidents after getting into difficulties and lifeguards are cautioning bathers to be very careful at the beach at Natures Valley. An extensive search for Renco is ongoing. The Metro EMS Skymed helicopter joined in the search but no sign of the missing man has been found. The Police Dive Unit have been in the area but poor visibility has hampered their search, Police have opened an inquest docket. An Opinion! Re CAR GUARDS I would like to ask some questions relating to car guards, but first some processes. They wave their arms indicating that there is a parking space (as if I had not seen it). When I park, this car guard will “guide" me into the parking space (as if I have suddenly lost the ability to park), and then will, generally, while I get out of the car to go on with my business, mumble a greeting and with a “how are you”, and may try to enter into a conversation, all the time angling for a hand out,. I don’t want to be asked how I am – they are not interested, and I am not interested in discussing this with strangers – there is no meaning in the question, it is simply a rote noise. I go into a shop for a few minutes (to the post office to fetch post for 2 minutes) and then return again.I might have to repeat this process three or four times in one morning.The car guard in a “uniformed” runs up to me, but not getting too close, again mumbling something, but I cannot decipher what he / she is saying – never mind, it matters not. I start my car, engage reverse, check for trafficand wait as necessary before moving on. During this operation if I look around Imay see this car guard waving me to either wait or move, that’s if he has not got into the blind spot (why do they think I have suddenly lost the

ability to move out of a parking space unassisted). The car guard will then make sure he is on the driver’s window side. If I ask him what he wants generally there will be some indication that a monetary payment is required. Why? For what?Give him 50 cents or a rand and it will be plain that this is too little – he expects more, how much depends on your car make and registration. Drive a “skadonk”, one hardly gets the time of the day, which is great! Drive a BMW or better still a Merc then there is great expectations. If you are an out of town GP or CA driver, then there is more expectation, and if he detects that you are a “foreigner” there is further anticipation. Not to mention the often harassment of the drivers, particularly the elderly, foreign and timid. Since the advent of “democracy” in SA, suddenly it is incumbent that the town driver has become a rather incompetent and blind driver, and now requires the assistance of someone who probably rarely travels in a car, and has no idea how the motor car is operated, to show one where to park and how and when to manoeuvre.By the bye, observation shows that few black drivers are approached by car guards. I have been driving for many years, my eyesight is good, but now suddenly I have to have these car guards in my face having the audacity to tell me how to drive, and without so much as a by your leave. If one does not pay him one is ”marked” and in all probability ones car will be deliberately defaced sometime in the future. Furthermore, they believe they have the right to stop traffic to allow cars to move in and out of these parking spaces, sometimes without consideration of their own safety. So, a question: Is this a job creation idea – this hardly rates as “decent work”?It is however extortion! What purpose do they serve as they are always in the toilet or on tea, lunch, saw nothing, or whatever, when there is a break-into a vehicle? What do they do, and what can they do should someone force their way into a vehicle? They are no deterrent! It is no reflection on the guard; for if the guard divulges the culprit, vengeance is meted out to them by their own community. It happens in all walks.

When I ask what they have done to deserve a payment there is a blank silence. They do nothing other than clutter up the pavement. It is time we had a “no loitering” law, for th e car guards are nothing short of loiterers. To further aggravate the matter, the municipality have blessed the car guards by giving them uniforms, training them1,and accrediting them. This at ratepayers’ expense nogal! As I see it, the car guard is simply a municipal sponsored beggar – it is not a job, contributes nothing and probably creates more problems – is this a solution to a problem, or is it a result of an ever decreasing effective police and justice system? To those philanthropists who feel sorry for the poor, stop patronising them – educate them, teach them skills (although my experience as an employer is that there is a reluctance to learn where this involves some extra work), but do not encourage begging. 1Does training include the aspect that the driver has the right not to pay anything and that there should be no animosity because of this? Plettenberg Bay Ratepayers and Residents Association Season’s Greetings to all of our members and, to our visiting ratepayers and residents - a very warm welcome to you. We hope that everyone will enjoy the Plett experience as we head towards 2012. You will have seen from this year’s Newsletters that 2011 has been tough at many levels. The ailing local economy caused several businesses to close and we are still experiencing the fallout from the erstwhile Mayor’s fiscal policies - with which fallout our Executive Mayor and his team continue to grapple. Many regular visitors will remember last year’s stringent water restrictions. The desalination plant which was commissioned at considerable expense had to be temporarily shut down, but this is now running at full load for a period of monitoring and testing. In April next year, the test results will be analysed to determine whether or not abstraction from the estuary will continue. In the meantime, projects have been initiated which are designed to meet household, business, agricultural and environmental requirements until the 2020’s. Since January 2003, problems in establishing a properly functioning airport have been ongoing. But the present

There will be many in Plett who will celebrate when the long-promised, but elusive, airport gives permission for the first 100-seater commercial aircraft to land! The Plettenberg Bay Ratepayers and Residents Association has also been actively involved in the state of our roads. The town’s rapid development meant that the Municipal infrastructure was unable to keep pace with the higher traffic volumes and the problem has been compounded by an overloaded storm water system due to property development. The run off from properties has added to the damage already done and your Association is urging the Municipality to define the urban edge and formulate a spatial development plan. This is not to say that we are against development - it is simply to ensure that development is preceded by proper infrastructural facilities, which will save on future maintenance costs and allow our rates to be meaningfully applied. There are no funds in the current budget for major road work but patching and repairing will continue and we urge everyone to travel our roads with caution. Our Landfill Monitoring Committee has been closely watching development surrounding the Bitou site and is fully informed on the options and possibilities for alternative means of waste disposal. A firm decision as to whether or not our waste will be transported to Knysna for compacting before being sent to PetroSA (outside Mossel Bay) has not yet been made, but the intention is to stop all deposits on the Bitou landfill as soon as possible. Your Plettenberg Bay Ratepayers and Residents Association has been keeping a close eye on the Municipal budget as well. Sadly, the service charge increases over last year’s budget (property rates, electricity, water, sewerage and refuse) reflect increases of between 10% and 28%, making our town the most expensive place to live in the Garden Route!

On the thorny issue of crime and crime prevention, your Association remains closely involved with the highly active Plettenberg Bay Crime Prevention Forum and we have a strong presence when it comes to treating and supporting victims of crime. Because money attracts time, we are all more vulnerable at this time of year, so please keep a close watch on your cars and your belongings and make sure that your homes are secured against possible intruders. An effective way to prevent crime is to be alert the people around you and to report anything which you believe to be suspicious. It is better to report a false alarm that to press a panic button! This is a very short report on your Association’s activities for the year and it does not begin to convey the incredible number of voluntary hours invested by our civic-minded portfolio leaders and their teams. Through their involvement, they are looking after all Plett ratepayers and residents. If you do not have the time or the inclination to become actively involved, then - even if you are just a “regular non-resident” - we urge you to at least become a member. Scriptwriting and Drama Development Course Lunchbox Theatre invites all Bitou residents who have an interest in theatre to apply to be part of the Scriptwriting and Drama Development Course being held in New Horizons on the 28th and 29th January 2012. The course will cover the theory behind writing a good script and show you how to turn that script into a stage play. The course has been designed to be a fun and interactive learning experience and includes plenty of practical experience over the two days. This Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport initiative will prepare our local Bitou theatre practitioners to create works that will be entered into the Eden Drama Festival in 2012. This Festival opens doors for our local theatre groups to present their works on a national platform. The Lunchbox Theatre Scriptwriting and Drama Development Course will run from 09h00 – 17h00 at the New Horizons Community Centre on Sat 28th and Sun 29th January 2012. Any individual or group with an interest in creating theatre can apply to be part of the course. National drownings:

A total of 22 deaths from water related accidents and drowning accidents around the South African coast have been recorded since the beginning of 2012. This figure does not include 4 people reportedly still missing from flood related incidents in Kwa-Zulu Natal and does not include 3 people who died following a boating accident at Bronkhorspruit. While official statistics are kept by the Medical Research Council NSRI can confirm that of these 22 deaths a total of 6 persons are still missing, who were presumed to have drowned, around the coast. NSRI fear that this figure will increase as holiday makers and learners make the most of their last days of the holidays in the peak of the full moon spring tide which causes the strongest rip currents to prevail and will last until later this week and we urge recreational bathers and boaters to exercise extreme caution. Letter via the Editor As a local retailer of many years in Plettenberg Bay, I am sure I speak on behalf of many other retailers when I voice my objection as to what is now occurring in our town regarding the so called “pop up shops” which come here over season to invade our territory. After all, we are permanent shopkeepers paying rent, levies, rates, water, wages all year round here in Plettenberg Bay. Then these people arrive here to climb on the band wagon for which we work so hard all year long. Farewell Greetings to Alderman Pierre Koep

We were blessed to have Alderman Pierre Koep as a correspondent for the What’s New in Plett for many years, first as the author of Councillor Corner, and then later as the Bitou Business Buzzer. In both columns the community were kept up to date about relevant decisions by Council and other occurrences that affected or were of interest to, our lives. When we first met Pierre, he was head of the Tourism Association. Having experience in the film making business, his dream was always to have a film festival in Plettenberg Bay. Pierre actively supported anything that would promote or enhance the town he loved. The question he often posed , irrelevant of his own or popular opinion, was : ‘What’s best for Plett? ’ As a councillor Alderman Koep served the town with honour and dedication. Any query or concern was promptly investigated with the department concerned and feedback was given on the same day if possible. After his term of office as a councillor, he still attended most Council meetings in order to keep abreast of and share the decisions taken with the community All his other commitments were tackled in the same way. He was an integral member of the committee for the revamp of Main Street, and the liaison officer for the Coming together Project. Pierre was also a keen sportsman, excelling at Squash on a national level and as the captain of the local Tennis Club. Pierre’s family was also very dear to him. He was very proud of his
