Kemoja Engage on the Outreach Campaign against drugs and alcohol abuse Kemoja is a community development based program specializing on bringing awareness and information regarding drugs, alcohol abuse and alleviation of poverty to community and their main focus is youth. On Monday I met with their members Sekshin Galeni, and Pastor Mkhaliphi from KwaNokuthula as well as Richard from Qolweni while they were on outreach campaigns against the abuse of drug substances and alcohol which lead to the job losses, increase in crime and poverty which started at the beginning of February. Currently they are visiting households to reach out to people to create an understanding of these issues said Sekshin, a local Kwaito artist who also plays a meaningful role in this project as an organizer. He said response from the community has been overwhelming and very positive as many people were already aware of these issues although they were lacking information, they gave out brochures and pamphlets. So far from the campaign they had learned that they need to publicize this program so people can know where to go as in some households they met with parents who are being abused by their children who are on drugs and alcohol, so they asked them to come back to meet with their children. Kemoja councillors will take on that. They call on the community to welcome their people in their houses during this campaign and those who had not visited and have some of the mentioned challenges can visit them at Simunye Centre where they are based or contact Pastor Mkhaliphi 072 401 3291 and Lokose 083 955 7538—program coordinators. On behalf of Kemoja Sekshin would like to thank IDT, Social Department and Bitou Municipality for giving the opportunity to Kemojo to play this role towards the
development of the community. As from this coming Saturday Kemoja will host youth activities to give a platform to young people to express themselves every Saturday. Letter via the Editor With reference an article regarding the service delivery of garden services in Plett. Good for Shindiga that they managed to help out. I was one of the garden services who was happy to deliver a service but due to a full diary at the time, I was unable to fulfill the call out. However, I would just like to mention that ad hoc services are quite a nitemare! Invariably the work is under quoted because the area to clean up is so hectically overgrown as the site hasn’t been kept under control and then miracles are made to happen. The trips to the tip take a huge slice of the time to carry all the rubble away as well. We work according to a schedule and we are always happy to find our way to a new garden and it pleases me to see the results of a clearing when the job is done properly. However, we could never take three days on a job in the Crags when most of our business is in local lekka Plet. On behalf of all the garden services in Plett, sorry that we let the side down! 'COMING TOGETHER PROJECT' is a Township Integration Endeavour, whose aim is to integrate various previously disadvantaged and separate precincts and nodes effectively into the broader Bitou Municipal Area and bring economic development, government services as well as social services and facilities closer to the majority of people. The precincts/nodes are located in the Bitou Municipal area. Construction has started on the regional Magistrates court complex and a new centralized community library complete with parking facilities, public transport provisions including a pedestrian/cycle path. The contractors are for the Urban Civil Upgrade: Ukana Projects, for the Urban Electrical Upgrade: MDL Electrical, for the New Library Complex: Exabuild (Pty) Ltd. The 3 contracts are running concurrently and it is envisaged that all works will be completed in 12 months. Aurecon S.A (Pty) Ltd the, overall project managers, have appointed Ald. Pierre Koep as Public Relations/Community Liaison Facilitator whose duties are to keep all communities informed and up to date with the latest developments in their respective areas. Furthermore he has to identify communication channels and establish contact with interested and affected groups and stakeholders and establish contact with leaders in the particular community regarding the objectives of the project (s). He will be responsible to report back on information received regarding community needs, expectations and opinions. Facilitate the process of resolving disputes as they may arise in connection with the needs, expectations and opinions. PRESS RELEASE ON THE PLANE CRASH AT PLETTENBERG BAY Around 18:30 on Tuesday, February 8, 2011 our Emergency Services received a call from the NSRI about a missing light aircraft. We immediately activated emergency operations, including setting up a Joint Operation Centre that accommodates all other services like NSRI, Police, District Fire Service and others. A physical search operation was immediately started. Just before 6:00 on Wednesday, February 9, 2011 debris were found in the sea. Subsequently seven bodies were recovered, mostly in the sea. The search is continuing for the recovery of the remaining bodies and the bulk of missing parts of the plane. We know that the weather was bad on the day of the accident but we do not know, at this juncture, whether that or other factors caused the accident. The relevant authority will make investigations to determine what really happened. The municipality conveys its condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the deceased. We assure the public that our personnel will always be available to ensure that the investigations in this matter are conducted with full cooperation from the municipality. On speculation about the state of our aerodrome. The facility, including equipment, was recently audited by the relevant authority and a certificate of compliance was issued less than a month ago. As stated above, we request that the investigation be given time so that whatever we say is based on facts.

Your baby’s circadian rhythm (body clock) only becomes established after birth and with a few easy steps, you can prevent sleep challenges. A word to the wise - A new baby is the responsibility of both parents: Take turns to get a few hours of undisturbed sleep - Adapt your routine – sleep when the baby sleeps - Put your phone on silent and relax when
possible - Ask family and friends for help - Have “visiting hours” when friends and family may visit - Do not rush back to your pre-baby schedule. Rest and recover completely and take time to adjust to and bond with your baby - Post partum depression is a physical condition that can be treated easily. Speak to a professional if you experience symptoms of depression, such as sadness, tearfulness, feelings of hopelessness or guilt, insomnia, changes in appetite, etc - Set a nighttime routine and teach your baby to self-sooth instead of holding, rocking or feeding him until he sleeps. Charities invited to submit Lotto applications Pretoria – Social welfare organisations have been invited to submit applications for Lotto funding in the charities sector before 25 March 2011. The National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund (NLDTF) said the mandate for the current members of the Distributing Agency for Charities expires in 2011, and the members are committed to adjudicating as many applications as possible during their tenure. “Of the three sectors that receive funding from the proceeds of the National Lottery, the Charities Sector receives the largest share (45 percent), Arts, Culture and National Heritage receives 28 percent and Sports and Recreation receives 22 percent,” said Chairperson of the National Lotteries Board, Professor Alfred Nevhutanda. In considering and adjudicating applications, the Charities Distributing Agency will focus on three areas: Expansion of home based care services in rural, underprivileged and poor communities, which assist those who are vulnerable or sick Provision of educational facilities that enhance literacy through early childhood and adult literacy programmes and vocational training Social welfare and development Nevhutanda pointed out that these priority areas are in line with the directions proclaimed by Minister of Trade and Industry, Rob Davies, in July 2010, which emphasise that funding from the National Lottery must be used in responding to South Africa’s developmental needs. “The Distributing Agency and all of us at the NLDTF wish to see that more welfare and non-profit organisations apply for funding and that they comply with the application guidelines so that we increase the number of beneficiaries that receive funding through this call. “Each year, a significant number of applications are rejected because they are submitted incomplete or later than the set deadline. We urge potential applicants to try to get their applications to us as early as possible so that the Distributing Agency can start to review and adjudicate

A Personal Note Wittedrift High had the privilege of hosting the annual SEC inter school’ athletic championships on Saturday 5 February 2011 a privilege we enjoy once every five years. Approximately 520 athletes in all groups( 6-18 years) competed in events such as sprints, middle distances, hurdles, javelin, short put, etc. What an honor and privilege it was to witness and enjoy the talents of these young people as they pushed themselves to the limit, pitting their skill and ability against their peers. The fact that approximately 2000 parents, friends and supporters cheered them throughout the day obviously brought out that little bit extra. Every competitor deserved all the support and compliments they received. The visiting schools were indeed worthy opponents. This day would not have been possible had it not been for the wonderful support and sense of generosity from so many of our Plett and Knysna business, the hard work of every staff member of Wittedrift High, the much appreciated help and support of our school governing body members and many other parents, the SAP and traffic officials, etc. and then, last but definitely not the least, the many hard working students of Wittedrift high. The input of each of the above, whether big or small, was equally valuable and appreciated. Together you ensure that our school and our community was able to shine. Invasive Alien Plants
Invasive Alien Plants are plants that grow outside of their natural habitat. They establish themselves quickly as they grow faster and mature earlier than indigenous plants and produce many seeds. These plants are often brought into South Africa by people for specific purposes for example oak trees for shade. They are a problem because they can waste a large proportion of national water resources, it could lead to loss of potentially productive land, loss of grazing potential and livestock production, increase problems associated with flooding and fires, can cause mass extinction of indigenous plants, cause erosion, destruction of rivers, siltation of dams and estuaries and poor water quality. This major problem can be dealt with by only planting indigenous plants and removing any alien vegetation.

The Boys of Mount Zion had a high tea on the 6th of February. This was definitely something else. The Mount Zion Hall was as usual pretty beautifully decorated by Kranshoek’s own Bobaas decorator, Sister Driena. The tables looked fabulous with all the colours of the rainbow. VOTER REGISTRATION PROCEDURES FOR MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS IN MAY In a municipal election you may only vote if you are registered as a voter and may only vote at the voting station where you are registered.
Who needs to register? If you are a South African citizen and have never registered before, or you are registered somewhere other than Plettenberg Bay, you need to register at the voting station nearest where you live in Plett. If you are a SA citizen, not yet 18 but will turn 18 on or before election day in May 2011, you can register now.
Who does not need to register or re-register? If you registered to vote in Plett in 1996 or thereafter you are on the Voter's Roll. You do NOT need a new 2011 sticker in your ID book. Permanent Residents are not SA citizens and therefore cannot register or vote. If you are unsure of your status, simply SMS your ID number to 32810 and you will receive a return SMS stating where you are registered.
Can I still register or is it too late? You can still register at the IEC office in the Municipal Building on Sewell St. during Municipal hours. You MUST take your ID book with you. Snippets for the Week It has been noted that our CVC Charity Shop is one of the biggest charity shops in the Western Cape! What a great achievement, and all thanks to the generous public, for your ongoing support. We have almost R300 000 stock in the shop, and have managed to sell goods to the value of about the same amount, since opening our doors in August last year. We are so fortunate that we are able to continue with sterilising daily, thanks to Dr van Reenen, Dr Naude and Dr Reitz. We now have a Committee in place to oversee our Income & Expenditure, our projects for the year ahead, as well as improving the well being of all animals in our area. We will be

I was in Kranshoek on Sunday afternoon and found that a certain dairy in our area, has once again been giving away baby bull calves to the residents. They cannot survive without their mothers, are skin and bone, tied up, have no shelter or water and one even tried to get his head under a diamond wire fence to reach for longer grass. It is just a matter of time before the dogs go in for the kill again, just as last year. I have now reported the matter to Law Enforcement, hopefully this inhumane act can come to an end for ever! I came across 2 pit-bulls in a small wired off area in Kwanokuthula last week. The woman from Ladywood should be absolutely ashamed of herself for selling them for R50 each to this man. The area where they stay is no larger than 3mx3m, with mud for a floor, no shade and no food, as the man only earns R850 per month. I have since sterilized both of them, provided him with a kennel and advised that he gives them a larger area to live in. Shame on you! We have 3 beautiful little kittens needing homes. Should anyone want a little one, please view at the shop. I am very aware that we can never put a stop to the breeding, as we cannot be in all the areas at the same time, but we need to at least try to save a little life when we can!
