Moebius Syndrome Awareness Day As our friends and family know, our son, Logan Van Zyl was born without the ability to “smile” He recently underwent the first of two lengthy facial muscle transplant operation in Johannesburg. At the age of 1 he was diagnosed with Moebius Syndrome. It is an extremely rare congenital neurological disorder which is characterized by facial paralysis and the inability to move the eyes from side to side. As a campaign of awareness we are involved in the Moebius communities from around the world and have dedicated the 24th of January 2012 as Moebius Syndrome Awareness Day (MSAD) and want to encourage people to wear Purple on this day in aid of making everyone aware to the cause of this rare disorder.

Phakamisani Primary News The school has opened on the 11 January 2012, educators and learners attended the school at the highest note, we have 1477 learners and 42 educators who were present on the first day of opening of the learners. The attendance was 100% for both learners and educators. On the first day educators were teaching and learners were learning very hard. At the moment the atmosphere of the school is fabulous and fantastic. The parents witnessed the historical event of the opening, Rev Nashwa blessed the school and conveyed words of encouragement and warned the learners about the use of drugs, alcohol and violence. Our honourable mayor delivered an important speech based on the advantages of the educated people. He promised that the municipality will cut the sports field grass and around the courtyard during the first term of the year. The school is overcrowded, each class has more than 50 to 60 learners, the school needs more than two classes. The department of education must build a new primary school at Bossiesgif and Welkom or KwaNokuthula this year. The school is living on the time bomb. This bomb can explode at any time. We would like to congratulate Murray high for their substantial improvement on their matric results, and also thank the Phakamisani staff, for their dedication because Phakamisani Primary is the school that feeds Murray High. 2012 Madder than ever

So there I was this morning vacuuming the leaves off my lawn with the house vacuum. Seemed like a perfectly good idea to me for a small problem. The two Ficus indoor plants were shedding leaves so I put them out on the lawn to do it there. Twenty minutes later I went out and the leaves were scattered around the ficus, on my pristine newly cut lawn. Brilliant idea, don't know what the neighbour thought when I spotted her at one of her upstairs windows. We have just arrived back from our little hols in Vanderbijl Park. I love these family bonding times, especially with my immediate family. In between me frantically cleaning up all the time we still had lots of drinkies, lots of disagreements etc. There were quite a few people in that house over Christmas, some invited sleeping guests and other just "having to sleep it off" guests. In this happy household two cats also live. One called Marbles (she is a bit long in the tooth, so mostly sleeps) then there is Timmy (the tiger look alike) and the most amazing rat/mouse catcher. Every night we had to listen to the

On the day that we arrived my brother (owner of the house) had just brought home a little ginger kitten. The sweetest thing ever, named Nicholas (for obvious reasons) and called Nikki. He took up all of my sister's time as she slowly introduced him to a completely mad household. Each time after having some traumatic experience she would take him to her room and reassure him that he would live. Brave kitty I must say, he spent a lot of time perched on top of my daughters parrot cage. I won't even stand less than three feet from that guy. He bites everyone except Bear. Coming home on the plane - we discovered the new rules. Max 20 kilos luggage for the hold and max 7 kilos luggage for the cabin. These people oviously have no female rule makers in their midst. My make-up and pills take up that and then there is the mountain of different outfits because, one never knows. Weather - a slendiferous occasion etc. The excess now costs a mint but we still have a sneaky little way to get more on board but I am not telling how. Just makes future travel even more tedious the packing I mean. Got back to Plett to find the visitors were all still here, and our usually empty estate had all the houses filled up with the the "out of town" people hiding their little assets from Mr. Sars. This posed a small problem as I am not used to people being able to see into our house - but the other morning I was making my bed, wearing my real shorty nightie and no broekies. Now when one bends over this becomes very clear. Too late I noticed the neighbours and their gardeners etc finding this out too. I also feed my guineas and peacocks at crack of

dawn in this same outfit not knowing that a lot of visitors were already up and about - walking their dogs - to s......on someones elses grass. Usually mine. They too saw a bit of a pornographic floor show. Serves them right, who gets up at 6am on holiday. I went blonde at the end of 2011, as I had heard this thing about blondes having more fun. Well this still has to happen but at least I am not recognized by a lot of people who have been away. No new year resolutions for me, too much trouble to stick to. Beloved gave up alcohol drinking twenty five years ago and smoking one and a half years ago, but he did mention something about "I am not doing grocery shopping this year" Seems he gets spotted all the time but by other men doing their shopping so what is the diffs. Western Cape raking in visitors

News 24 reports: More travellers are visiting the Western Cape and its attractions than in previous years, Tourism MEC Alan Winde said on Thursday. Preliminary statistics reveal that a total of 4.21 million passengers arrived at Cape Town International Airport in 2011. "This is 4.16 percent higher than what was achieved in 2010, the year that we hosted the FIFA World Cup," he said. The trend was consistent with the figures for December, when there were 17% more international visitors, he said. Regional visitors increased by 26.8% and domestic visitors by 4.5% last month.There was a sharp increase of visitors to Cape Point, Kirstenbosch Gardens, Boulders Beach and the Table Mountain Cableway over the festive season. More people visited the Overberg region, outside Cape Town, with popular attractions being the De Hoop Nature Reserve, the seaside village of Arniston and the small town of Napier near Bredasdorp. Winde said more people were visiting the province because of the hard work of the tourism industry and the welcoming attitude of residents. Most international visitors felt the province was safe, according to a snapshot exit poll of 25 people from 14 countries at Cape Town airport on Wednesday. All visitors said they would return and 40% said they would bring their families next time. Winde said the province's poor performer was Robben Island, with 7.5% fewer visitors than in December 2010. "This world heritage site continues to be

plagued by bad service, staff with a questionable work ethic and shoddy infrastructure. "Instead of being an icon of our province and country, Robben Island has become a blemish on our tourism industry." Winde said he would meet the island's team to discuss possible improvements. In 2012, the province would promote itself to travellers from Africa, the Middle East and Brazil, Russia, India and China. It would also continue to market itself to domestic tourists. Winde said his ultimate goal was for tourism to contribute 10% to 15% of the region's gross domestic product by 2014. LADIES CORNER CLEARANCE SALE LESS 25% PRINGLE AND SENQU Waste tyre Management Plan for SA Pretoria – South Africa’s new waste tyre management plan is set to support government’s targets to put the country’s economy onto a stronger job growth trajectory while meeting ambitious climate change goals, government said on Tuesday. This follows the announcement by Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs, Edna Molewa, of the approval of a new Integrated Industry Waste Tyre Management Plan which Cabinet is hoping will go a long way in addressing South Africa’s carbon footprint while transforming the sector to benefit previously disadvantaged groups. A Section 21 company known as REDISA won the approval to manage the country’s waste tyres estimated at over 200 000 tonnes a year. REDISA will collect the waste tyres from all over the country, including tonnes from stock piles that are unaccounted for, for use in various recycling processes and for fuel and other energy needs. A national centralised computer system will be set up to capture data on tyres collected and treated, money collected and spent, and jobs created. Currently there is no proper management of waste tyres in South Africa and old tyres are being dumped at landfills, leading to serious environmental and health problems for the country. Molewa said in about five years, government wanted this situation to have changed and for it to be illegal to dump waste tyres at any landfill in the country. The plan also aims to create more than 15 000 jobs. However, the bad news is that motorists may have to delve deeper into their pockets when

buying a new tyre. This is because REDISA will be imposing a levy of R2.30 per kilogram on each purchased new tyre. Tyre producers who fail to abide by the regulation may face fines of up to R100 000 and or imprisonment not exceeding three years. Environmental Affairs Chief Director for Waste Management, Nolwazi Cobbinah, said the levy may drop depending on the amount of money that initially gets collected and the success of the initiative. Cobbinah defended government against claims that the regulations could lead to further financial stress for consumers in an already tough economic climate. The move, she said, was necessary. “A proportion of the money will go to research and development, including exploring new technologies that will help us deal with the challenge of waste management and addressing our climate change obligations,” she said. KING MELISIZWE LAUNCHED HIS SMALL TOWN BOY MIXTAPE AT CLUB AFROCENTRIC. In a Sunday evening that started very slowly especial for those who only went to watch king’s performance, as the show could not start because the club was still empty only with few people kept the time going with game of pool table. But to the event organisers and club regulars that was not the case as they were cool with no pressure knowing that it is like a culture to KwaNokuthula part animals to start at the taverns before they go to have funny in the club as they usually go to clubs once the taverns are closed. After 11 pm the club Afrocentric started to pick up as people started to arrive, those who waited for 3 hours for the show to start like me did not regret waiting as the show was wealth waiting for with King Melisizwe on fire. The show started at 00:30 and stage was opened by Double U.E. a New Horizon rapper, many people remember him on his performance with his crew Bon Playaz at the Central Beach on the New Year Eve Party. At Afrocentric he sang a song called August taken from his LP 365 days. At the beginning the show was very tense and the audience was very demanding. The second act on the line-up was Junino of Juninza production followed by Ntobeko Chosen Mjijwa who was born here in Plett but left the town for PE in 1995 where he still live and study at NMMU although as from 2003 he started to visit Plett again occasionally but still the locals don’t know him yet. Chosen impress the audience especial ladies in a song called Grateful where they sing along in the chorus. Shekshin took over the stage after Chosen wow what a performance,

this was when everybody come close to the dance floor even those who were playing pool in the other side of the club came in and dance on his song called Imali yeGintsa “Gang star money”. Then the main cat, King Melisizwe whose xhosa name means represent the nation, take on stage and shown us how he represent our nation and give us the reason why we should buy his second mixtape as we did in 2010 when he offer us with Xhosalise mixtape. The Small Town Boy is differ or superior than the first one in terms of maturity, sound quality and he expresses himself these time with no sing along which he made himself popular with. The first song he performs is Work Hard where he said he will hustle till his life turns for better course his mother did not gave birth to a fool and he woke up with a dream just like Martin Luther King. After performing other songs such as Theth’isiXhosa, Nguking, New Sneaker Walk and the hit track that was performed due to the demand by the audience everybody was happy and satisfied with his show. The current mixtape as it is tittle Small Town Boy which is also the movement he initiated with his partner Trevor Mapitiza is consist of many hit track that include a biggest collaboration with the legendary MXO in a Celebrate a song that had received air waves in national radio stations such as Umhlobo Wenene, Metro and YFM to mention a few and these boys are working on making a deal with a sneaker company to sponsor for a music video. You may read the above Scripture and think yes, that sounds very nice, but you don't know my circumstances and the condition I am in. No, I don't and I will immediately admit that generally life is tough and often extremely turbulent and not always calm and pleasant. Even being a believer does not guarantee that everything will always go smoothly. One only has to read the Bible and in particular look at the lives of the New Testament authors to prove that point. Paul is a perfect example. As a "model Christian" who also wrote most of the New Testament he wrote to the church of Corinth about some of his experiences: "I have been in labors more abundantly, in stripes above measure, in prisons more, in deaths many times. Five times from the Jews I received forty stripes minus one. Three times I was beaten with rods, once I was stoned, three times I was shipwrecked. I have spent a night and a day in the deep. A little while later Paul writes: "[God's] grace is sufficient for you, for [God's] power is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore I will rather glory in my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may overshadow me. [2Cor 12:9] Christ in me is my hope; Christ in

me gives me patience and Christ in me, through the Spirit, prays and petitions the Father on my behalf. In this life you and I will suffer tribulation and hardships, but with Jesus Christ in your life you will not only survive, but you will have peace and happiness in spite of any adverse circumstances. Site_Specific Bitou – Land Art Book Launch

Janet Middleton reports: Could there be a better place to launch a book on land art than the Beacon Isle Hotel. The iconic hotel is an architectural artwork in itself and the hotel hosted the launch of a documentary book about the Land Art Event that took place in Plettenberg Bay last year. Site_Specific explains that “discipline of Land Art uniquely combines culture and nature in a manner that brings art to the community’s landscape thus it has the potential to transform communities’ and individuals’ perceptions of themselves, each other, their environment and the interconnected relationship between all of them.” Last year, many Plett residents watched in wonder as circles were drawn in the sand and rocks piled atop rocks as both national and international artists worked on their pieces in and around the town. After seeing the collection of prints, I am reminded of the saying: “You can’t see the forest for the trees.” Seeing the collection completed and the prints on display showcased the talent of these artists and photographers as well as capturing the natural beauty of the Bitou Community. The launch was very well attended and included Site_Specific’s Strijdom van der Merwe, artist Anni Snyman and event designer, Heather Greig. The local art community supported the event and Jacques Moolman from the Beacon Island and Mayor Memory Booysen were also in attendance. Both Mayor Booysen and Mr Moolman expressed their excitement over the Site_Specific project and

Most of the artwork created disappeared within a week or two, but Simon Bannister was commissioned by the Eden to Addo Corridor Initiative to create a permanent work close to the Griqua community of Kranshoek. Along with local stone masons, he created a work entitled “Aartmoeders” and this is the first artwork in the Eden to Addo Corridor land art route. Looking into 2012, the Site_Specific Land Art event will take place this year with a week long showing including the communities of Wittedrift and The Crags in addition to Kwanokuthula, Kranshoek, Robberg and the Keurbooms Corridor. The artwork and event will be focused around local artists with an invited artist creating a piece for the Eden to Addo Corridor and holding workshops during their stay at Ebenezer Estate. Very exciting for nature and art lovers is the 6 day hike/mountain bike trail linking the Eden to Addo
