Did you know that this is
‘Make Your Mark Week’
October 16 -22 It culminates in Make A Difference Day, the largest national day of community service. It strives to inspire and mobilize youth to use their energy, ingenuity and compassion to "make their mark on the world" through hands-on service. This is the perfect time to show the children in your life how easy it is to care for the world and all its inhabitants. It can be something as simple as turning off the lights when leaving a room or helping to plant a tree. Other ideas include: * donating a gently worn book to the library; * giving too-small clothes to a shelter; * helping them read to a younger child. These ideas and others will help instill awareness that everything the child does matters and has an impact on the wider world. Get involved and resolve to help the kids in your life make their mark on the world to make it a better place.

Celebrate the third annual Festival of Lights. The event started with the intention of bringing all people together to build a brighter future, to eradicate racism and to breathe life into the collective desire for peace and unity. 300 people attended the first festival when the theme was “light over darkness”. The second event attracted international attention and saw almost a 1000 people gathering on central beach, where numerous artists and speakers from different religious and cultural backgrounds supported the Greenskin Initiative; the idea being to paint yourself green so that everyone is the same colour, or to wear green in support. This year the intention is to bring awareness to the issue of rape. Women must be able to wear what

Dankie. Pieter Marais I will buy your DIAMONDS & DIAMOND JEWELLERY for cash. All deals very discreet. cost to Council... A public meeting was held on 20 November 1997 dealing with the Jet Ski issue - very lively debate...The first meeting of the executive committee of the Community policing forum took place on 19th.January 1998...Rates became the topic of the day and in February 1998 a comparison with the city of Sandton was made. Plett. rates together with refuse removal and sewerage came to R389.67 (plus vat) Sandton was R504.90... After two years of meetings a proposal was made to build a small boat harbor - still being discussed. In April 1998 residents of Welkom/ Bossiesgif were told to relocate to Kwanokuthula (many refused to move)... A shark attack on a local surfer by the name of Neal Stephenson happened in May 1998. Neal recovered after losing a leg but was surfing within months. The previous attack by a Great White was 1946. Esteemed residents that's it for now! Greetings, Ald. Pierre Koep.

Bitou Business Buzz REMINISCENCE...is an interesting part of life. Due to a lack of notable information from Council at present - everyone still finding 'their feet'- I have taken the liberty of highlighting some events encountered during my 18 years on Council. Decisions taken by Council were published in a column named 'Councilor Corner' which started in July 1997 and ended on the 23 February 2006. Due to the approximate 500 editions I will write about them over a period of time until other more important information, affecting our daily life's, is available. Here we go! The first Plett. Town Council was established in 1961 with a permanent population of 200! in 2002- 299 building plans were approved. Same month, namely July 1997 the Municipal waste disposal site was reaching it's full capacity ( 13 years later we are still taking decisions!) A sizeable swimming pool was built by enthusiastic members of the community and came under Municipal control on 15th.October 1997...Recycling process was put on tender and a Mr. Julyan was the only person willing to do the job at no

News & Views from PAWS At our last monthly meeting we had the pleasure of welcoming three young girls from the Greenwood Primary Independent School in Ladywood. They have chosen to support PAWS for their social project for the year. Demi, Ruby and Karma brought an enormous basket of food which had been collected for PAWS by the pupils at the school, and also gave a detailed report on their fund raising activities. Well done to you all. We do appreciate your commitment to the ongoing welfare of the animals in the Bitou area. You will have read the reports of our 4 x PAWS Dog stWalk which was held on Saturday, 1 October. Our grateful thanks to you all for your support – what a wonderful event and thank you to Michelle for your excellent organisation. On a more serious note. Starting from this news report, we will be reminding the public on an ongoing basis of the fact that the letting off of fireworks is illegal in the Bitou area. It is understood that organised firework displays such as the one possibly put on by the Beacon Isle Hotel on Old Year’s Eve, will be allowed. In the event of such a display taking place, we will issue warnings to all animal owners to make sure their pets are in a safe environment and also remind pet owners that tranquilisers are available at all Veterinary Clinics in town. We do respectfully ask the public to remember that ALL funds collected by the Paws Premises Project (PPP) are for the building of the animal clinic ONLY. That money has been invested and will be used when a suitable site is found, as stated in our last report. PAWS does not have access to that
ELECTRONIC CIGARETTES, now available @ Happy Smoker, Market Square
money for day-to-day expenses incurred. Following on the report of the amount of money spent by PAWS in September, our expenditure with the Vet Clinics to date in October has amounted to R25,000. Our organisation, which acts as the representative for the public of Bitou, is pro-life and we would rather spend money to save the life of an animal than to follow the path of euthanasia. Please also remember that any fundraising done in the name of PAWS, although very welcome, must be authorised by the PAWS Committee. Talking of fundraising! An appeal – does anyone know where we can get our ‘paws’ on a TOMBOLA. We need one urgently for an event we are organising on the 28th October. Please help! To all of you out there – we couldn’t do it without you! Thank you.

Oriented Birds F.C. News First I wanna thank all our supporters for their faithful support in the past two games, even though we lost again, but they continued to cheer up the boys. The Goals are not forth coming so far but our boys and the coach are working hard to improve this. Overall we (management) are happy with the progress so far, The only factor that is letting us down is lack of self belief in our players, we all know that they are best in this region. I’m glad that we are growing week by week, Improvement is there and believe me the results are coming. Our next game is against Ajax Cape Town in Parrow Ikamva, Cape Town on 21 October (Friday) @ 19h00. Our man of the match this week is Sinethemba “Biano” Bantyi. It was a tough one as many players were contenders for this title but well done Mfana and keep it up. Happy belated Birthday to Lwando “Shakes” Ncapha as he celebrated his B/Day on the 17th (Monday), we (Team) wish you all the best in your career. A lot of people have been asking me about the news that emerged last week about the price tag on the club, yes guys it’s true but we will keep you posted on Hello Plett Facebook page on any new developments as we still have to first meet the majority stake holders (players) today before our trip to Cape Town to meet the interested parties. All the best and keep supporting Abafana Abaphethe istyle. It is with appreciation that we noted that the municipality’s street marking team is currently busy re-painting street markings in town. A kind request please. Please paint a centre line down the length of Longships drive. This is one of the busiest roads in Plett and quite narrow compared to some of the other main traffic arteries in our little village. Apart from the marked speed bumps, there are no other road markings anywhere in Longships drive. We were involved in a near head-on collision in Longships drive last year in which my wife sustained fairly serious injuries. If the middle of the road had been marked by a centre line, this accident could, in our opinion, in all probability have been avoided. One more request. The owner of the backpackers establishment in Church street, that is between Main and High street and opposite Checkers, have endeavoured to beautify the pavement area by demarcating the parking bays in front of his property, with retaining wall blocks, filled in and planted with
greenery. His efforts deserves our town folk’s sincere appreciation but the low walls seriously hampers proper and compliant parking. The result is that people cannot without great effort, park their vehicles properly parallel and therefore merely park with the rear end of their vehicles sticking out into the road way. With all the delivery vehicles servicing Checkers and the surrounding businesses as well as the many vehicles entering and exiting the parking areas throughout the day, this state of affairs poses a real traffic problem. We appreciate the backpackers’ efforts but think it more important that the blocks be removed and the pavement cleared of the “obstructions” as soon as possible. Many thanks in anticipation, Hennie Van Der Walt 1 BED open plan cottage, long lease Harkerville 082 650 9366 EMPLOYMENT WANTED. My domestic worker has been with me for 9 years. Prayer Walk against Drugs
The prayer walks have not been supported as well as one should imagine or hope. I am not an island nor am I busy with a one-man show. I do not gain any material benefit from this, but my heart goes out to our youth and families that has been torn apart because of this. Therefore once again I would like to "SCREAM" out to our community, churches, role-players to support this mission. Drugs have taken over in New Horizons as well as surrounding areas. I am proud of the church in Kranshoek who took the first step in combating this evil, as well as our team in The Crags. My encouragement to them is to pursue this cause and to keep on keeping on!!!! The Crags will gather at the community hall on Friday @ 19h00 and new Horizons @ the taxi rank @ 19h30.For enquiries: Crags: Blanche Ndubane : 0749640265 and New Horizons : Chrystal Smith 0798786493. Formosa Primary Tree Carers The children of Formosa Primary in New Horizons were treated to green smiles when local NPOs Lunchbox Theatre and The Green Ticket teamed up to bring some tree magic to the school. The Lunchbox Theatre team has developed a brand new theatre show and workshop program that celebrates indigenous trees as a vital part of our existence. Fun and interactive, The Tree Show uses song, dance and physical theatre to convey a simple yet engaging story and contains information relating to the importance of trees, the threats they endure and practical ways to conserve them. The story takes place in a small village where the tranquillity and celebration of a wedding ceremony is disturbed by insensitive, naive and greedy developers. Using a large tree puppet that voices his concern through an old man, the developers learn more about trees and so change their ways. After the show the children took
to the school ground to plant their own indigenous tree sponsored by Debbie Fermor of Ingwe Forest Adventures. The Lunchbox crew guided the enthusiastic crowd in singing the two volunteers through the steps of planting a tree. Planting the tree is obviously only the first step and The Green Ticket will be visiting the school on a regular basis to help a selected grade look after the tree. The first follow up visit saw the very keen children receiving Tree Captain badges, a watering can and a book to keep track of the tree watering. Formosa Primary serves as a pilot project that can hopefully be taken to all the other schools in the Bitou area once funding has been secured. Should you be interested in getting involved, please contact either info@lunchbox.org.za or info@thegreenticket.org ORGANIC COMPOST. Reitz Tree Care 082 424 0055 WALK FOR WELLNESS with "Out & About". Lunchbox Update! We've had a busy and exciting few weeks at Lunchbox. On the 30th of September Stu took part in The Otter Trail Run and managed to complete it in the time of 6hrs and 54mins! Well done Stu! A BIG thank you to everyone for their support and donations. We managed to raise some much needed funds for our educational theatre projects, the newest of which, The Tree Show, has just been launched on the Garden Route. This exciting piece of theatre fleshes out the importance of trees to our existence and highlights the significance of working with mother nature rather than against her. The show is followed by a tree planting workshop, which allows learners to get actively involved in the planting of an indigenous tree on the grounds where the show is performed. Last week we teamed up with The Green Ticket for a collaborative performance and Planting Workshop at Formosa Primary. The Green Ticket will be paying follow up visits to the school to help with the care and nurturing of the tree. Finally, hats off to the Lunchbox cast and crew, as last week saw the performance of our 200th show! What an exciting milestone! Following the death of the legendary Steve Jobs we are happy to share this with our readers… It was sent to us by 3 readers for inclusion in the What’s New. Thanks to Angus, Anne and Rose.
Steve Jobs and the 7 Rules of Success
Steve Jobs' impact on your life cannot be underestimated. His innovations have likely touched nearly every aspect -- computers, movies, music and mobile. As a communications coach, I learned from Jobs that a presentation can, indeed, inspire. For entrepreneurs, Jobs' greatest legacy is the set of principles that drove his success. Over the years, I've become a student of sorts of Jobs' career and life. Here's my take on the rules and values underpinning his success. Any of us can adopt them to unleash our "inner Steve Jobs." 1. Do what you love. Jobs once said, "People with passion can change the world for the better." Asked about the advice he would offer would-be entrepreneurs, he said, "I'd get a job as a busboy or something until I figured out what I was really passionate about." That's how much it meant to him. Passion is everything. 2. Put a dent in the universe. Jobs believed in the power of vision. He once asked then-Pepsi President, John Sculley, "Do you want to spend your life selling sugar water or do you want to change the world?" Don't lose sight of the big vision. 3. Make connections. Jobs once said creativity is connecting things. He meant that people with a broad set of life experiences can often see things that others miss. He took calligraphy classes that didn't have any practical use in his life -- until he built the Macintosh. Jobs traveled to India and Asia. He studied design and hospitality. Don't live in a bubble. Connect ideas from different fields. 4. Say no to 1,000 things. Jobs was as proud of what Apple chose not to do as he was of what Apple did. When he returned in Apple in 1997, he took a company with 350 products and reduced them to 10 products in a two-year period. Why? So he could put the "A-Team" on each product. What are you saying "no" to? 5. Create insanely different experiences. Jobs also sought innovation in the customer-service
experience. When he first came up with the concept for the Apple Stores, he said they would be different because instead of just moving boxes, the stores would enrich lives. Everything about the experience you have when you walk into an Apple store is intended to enrich your life and to create an emotional connection between you and the Apple brand. What are you doing to enrich the lives of your customers? 6. Master the message. You can have the greatest idea in the world, but if you can't communicate your ideas, it doesn't matter. Jobs was the world's greatest corporate storyteller. Instead of simply delivering a presentation like most people do, he informed, he educated, he inspired and he entertained, all in one presentation. 7. Sell dreams, not products. Jobs captured our imagination because he really understood his customer. He knew that tablets would not capture our imaginations if they were too complicated. The result? One button on the front of an iPad. It's so simple, a 2-year-old can use it. Your customers don't care about your product. They care about themselves, their hopes, their ambitions. Jobs taught us that if you help your customers reach their dreams, you'll win them over. There's one story that I think sums up Jobs' career at Apple. An executive who had the job of reinventing the Disney Store once called up Jobs and asked for advice. His counsel? Dream bigger. I think that's the best advice he could leave us with. See genius in your craziness, believe in yourself, believe in your vision, and be constantly prepared to defend those ideas. If I told you the truth I’d be lying’ Plett is very proud of our Artist Extraordinaire and Pieman Stephen Rosin. Absa is currently hosting award-winning artist, Stephen Rosin, in his first solo show entitled ‘If I told you the truth I’d be lying’. Rosin was the winner of the 2009 Absa L’Atelier competition. The works created for this exhibition display a private devotion to the ideals of beauty as well as the artist’s need to undermine sublime visual harmony. Says Rosin: “My work purposefully mocks the status quo, utilising materials and objects inexorably linked to the subjects they poke fun at. The intention for the work is that it acts as a vehicle to expose this stage show, where manufactured reality and engineered consent have become the norm. By using satire and humour, I attempt to present the ‘truth’ as the lie that it is, hopefully breaking down its perceived and accepted image to
Mangold Point Michelle: Tel No 044 533 6986 Cell: 071 297 2541 look forward to seeing you show something of the real one lurking beneath.” Absa Art and Museum Curator Dr Paul Bayliss says: “It is great to welcome Stephen back to Absa since he won the Absa L’Atelier in 2009 and to be able to host his first solo exhibition.” Rosin was born in 1975 and graduated from the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in 1999 with a B.Tech degree (cum laude) in Fine Arts and has been included in numerous exhibitions and the Absa L’Atelier art awards since 2007. He also has collections of his artwork around the country as well as international private collections in France, Iran, Norway and New Zealand to name a few. The work on exhibition has received very good response so far on all fronts. Of the 27 Artworks, 7 have already been sold with 3 more ‘on option’. We have posted a PDF of the work www.helloplett website. Do take a look . For more details of any work contact the curator Paul Bayliss on paulbay@absa.co.za or Assistant curator Stephan Erasmus.011 350 5139 If you are in Johannesburg, you can see the work at the Absa Gallery at Absa Towers North, 161 Main Street, Johannesburg, from 13 October to 04 November 2011. The exhibition is open from 08:30 to 16:00 daily and entrance is free. Members of the public are requested to bring their ID books along for parking and entry purposes.

Official Opening on 4 November 2011 * R 65 p/p Purchase Tickets from David 079 7889 400 / Zanzibar 044 533 1153 and pollution around them. It was Pudding was fat free yogurt. Chatterbox on so nice to return to our quiet little Something we used to only eat town and drive at a sedate 60kms when we were ill is now a treat of Dieting and people slow down for you. note. We have just returned from "The Big Smoke". That saying is so true. Flying into Johannesburg you can hardly see the ground for that thick layer of brown/grey smog. Three weeks ago beloved and I decided that clothes are definitely all coming from 'the small people' countries as sizes were getting bigger and the clothes smaller. . . . . until we weighed ourselves. After examining the scale for faults we realised that maybe, just maybe we were a little on the weighty side. No problem, my sister had the 'Dukan' book and we set forth. Only problem is the first ten days are high protein only. One can get very sick of tinned tuna in brine, steaks with no fat, fish grilled with nothing etc. Going out is a nightmare and friends have learnt to make us our special dish while they feast on their three course meals. Going to the City, everyone wanted to see us and entertain us, but due to the fact that we had already lost quite a few kilos we could not turn back. Eating out was such fun - they are drinking toasts with champagne and we are holding up our glasses of water. On our plates were, a piece of the above mentioned - plus daringly a couple of chopped tomatoes. The trouble with this diet is it is awful and when your weight does not move for a day or two, you get tempted to say 'let's can this' and then the next day - another kilo down. It is kind of addictive. Last night I had a friend to dinner, who is also on this killer diet. I had to photograph our feast. Boiled cabbage (with some spices) - butternut with nothing cauliflower steamed (here we cheated a bit with a washed down version of cheese sauce) and real ham.
Johannesburg is still the same, all our children fight with each other and with us. There are always insurmountable problems to be solved and the traffic gets worse. You can now be killed by speeding vehicles standing next to your car in the Carpark. One learns to slide out of your door sideways and stand deathly still until you have surveyed the state of car racing. Hooters from taxis hoot continuously and all play music so loudly, I am surprised they know when a fare gets on board. The sirens from police, ambulance and fire engines go all the time and no-one seems to notice. My shoulders were up under my ears with tension - you shake with terror for half an hour after a near accident in the traffic - there are no rules in that traffic, it is the fastest vehicle that changes lanes, without signalling, who wins. It might also be the DIETS fault, but it seems like the City people are totally oblivious to the terrible noise
To date with our weight loss, Beloved now says he wants to be called a Gazelle he is looking so sleek - cannot call myself anything yet, maybe a little pot bellied pig. Lots of love Chatterbox First ELECTRICAL SUPPLY COMPANY

The "SlutWalk"
started in Canada, after a police officer told a group of law students "women should avoid dressing like sluts in order not to be victimised". The resulting SlutWalk generated massive media attention, and the movement (and name) caught on and spread around the world -- including to South Africa, where many slut walks have taken place. The first walk was named as a response to two things: first a specific situation, in which the use of the word slut needed to be challenged; and, secondly, a society in which the way a woman (or man) dresses or behaves is still seen as either incitement to or justification of sexual assault. Say NO to rape in any form ! There is no excuse or provocation which should allow / have us condone the violation of a fellow human being.

Qolweni Community Conservancy On September 29th 2011, the official opening of Qolweni Community Conservancy was held at the Siyakula Preschool within the township. Kenneth Magaga (the newly elected chairman of the conservancy) was host to this special event. Barend le Roux from Cape Nature, gave a presentation on conservancies to the community. “This will be the first Township Conservancy within the area...” Barend explained, “As this particular initiative is not entirely an urban conservancy, or a rural conservancy.” Luigi Lottino (Nature Conservationist working with the ORCA foundation) as well as Cassandra Cardiff (an International Development and Anthropology student from Canada) aided in the starting of the conservancy in May 2011, and the conservancy has been working hard ever since to get to where they are today. From ORCA Foundation, we wish the new conservancy within Qolweni luck for the future and hope that they are supported by everyone so that they can achieve every goal they set. - Luigi Lottino, ORCA Foundation. established in 2011, is in memory of our dear friend Tim Van Heerden who lost his life to a shark attack on the 23rd of August 2011 in Plettenberg Bay. It all started when the organizers of the annual Surfers Ball asked if they could hold the ball in memory of Tim this year, a couple of like minded locals then got together ...and from that the Plett Ocean Festival has been born. This year a surf contest, a corporate relay run/walk and The Surfers Ball will all be held in Plettenberg Bay on the 12th of November 2011 and all funds raised will go into the Plett Ocean Festival Fund in memory of Tim Van Heerden. This Fund has been set up for the Development of Ocean skills and Education. The idea behind this is to educate our local PDI in ocean skills whether it be through out lifesaving program, learn to swim program, "the orca foundation" or as a shark spotters and tourism information guide with the emphasis on ocean activities. These guides will double up as shark spotters and trained lifeguards with Surf proficiency awards, shark bite kits will be purchased and be accessible at popular Plett surf spots. The fund can also be used to assist any persons showing exceptional ocean skills to further their career in the field they excel at. Funds will also go towards the National Sea Rescue Institute (Station 14) assisting with whatever they need to make their jobs a little easier.
can take the tragic death of Tim's and turn it into something positive for the whole town which can only boost our tourism as a whole. The Plett Ocean Festival will be brought into the October school holidays next year; an entire week long festival will be created for it. Conservation Corner Acidifications effect on coral reefs and the coral reef fishes.By: Ulrica
Williams The coral reef are under a lot of stress, they have been having problems with temperature changes, but now the biggest problem is ocean acidification. This means that the carbon dioxide that we release in to the atmosphere is going in to the ocean and decreasing the pH in the water. This affects all animals that uses calcium in any way, like corals, mussels, crayfish, starfish and many others. What happens is the calcium shell start to dissolve on the animal, and they will die. The fish on the reef will then die and no more red romans to catch and eat. The solution is to minimize the carbon release and plant trees to get the carbon dioxide in the environment to a minimum. To find out what your carbon footprint is visit our website at http:// www.planetgreenoceanblue.com/ carboncalculator.html

Letter via the Editor Lighthouse Development We propose to make the Lighthouse development a proper landmark and destination in Plettenberg Bay. To increase the desirability and ultimately the value of the surrounding properties we need something to resemble the old fashioned town square with interesting shops, galleries, coffee shops, maybe a wine bar, green spaces to walk in and playgrounds for children, in short a place where people and families can meet. This destination shopping centre should have a loosely constructed look in a park-like area. The buildings are separately standing, lots of tress are spending shade, and building comprising shops and living space are recommendable. We have all chosen Plett for its beautiful nature. It is time to bring back green into the suburb; have meeting places for kids and parents. We do NOT need another shopping centre with all the common shops. What is the fun in going there? On holiday we want to see something more interesting and different. Plett can be the place to have all that. Studies have shown that people are happy in a place where they can interact with other people, where children can play with other kids. Let us make a meeting place, an old fashioned common. Even in Disneyland the new aim has been to have something like a central park. Big cities like New York have

Let Plettenberg Bay have its very own CENTRAL PARK! Here in the middle of the Whale Rock Developments! It can only enhance the whole neighbourhood. Let’s achieve happiness for our area. As a resident living next to the Lighthouse Development I would like to make a proposal for a happy space including a park like areas with little shops, restaurants, galleries and playgrounds. I am prepared to supply a concept plan made by a qualified landscape architect. So people of Plett, please do not approve the current plans. Together let’s create something worthy of our beautiful town! Let’s keep nature not only surrounding Plett but create a central park, a gathering place for Plettonions and holidaymakers alike, a real destination! We do not need another common shopping centre! Let’s create something of interest. You can contact me: Irme Hammel, 36 Skerry Vore Ave, Tel 044 533 1597 or 073 389 1247, irmewalterhammel@hotmail.com SHOTGUN DOUBLE 12 bore L.G.
