A special thanks to Cosmos Masinda Driving School ( The true spirit of Ubuntu )
On June this I went to Oudtshoorn to do my driving licence, I was told its easy there you just pay R2000. you take a few lessons in the road is simple and you pass, it turned out to be not like that. I didn’t come back with the licence and a number of people came back there thwarted. I met Cosmos as i took one lesson from him just to get the feel of driving different vehicles, I told him I failed , the said I make an appointment in Knysna and come back to him. I told him I already paid my money in Oudstshoorn and I don’t have money I have to go back there. He said life is not always about money. He offered me free lessons for two months and three weeks. That’s what we call The Spirit of Ubuntu. Today I have my C1 driving licence, that dude is good at what he does, I can bet you on tit. there is this general misconception about him giving lessons to women, that's my myth, I am a man and he gave me free lessons. the fact about him is that he is very patient and if you don’t understand he spend more time on you. If you don't understand again he gives you a whip ( imvubu ezinyaweni). Many thanks cosmos may you carry on with the good work to all those he need a driving licence. Cheers Luvuyo
Letter via the Editor In answer to “very sad indeed” yes it is very sad indeed that this person, who is out on R500.00 bail, has been condemned and found guilty by you and no doubt many others! do you know him? We do, and for your and everybody else’s information, he is the most gentle and kind person who would not hurt anybody! by living at the wrong place he too was caught up in the legal system. What happened to innocent until proven guilty? Even sadder CX Appliance Plett - Prompt Service & Guaranteed Repairs to Defy & Most brands of kitchen appliances & oil heaters. WHAT'S NEW IN PLETT – 21 OCTOBER 2010
New, luxury Kennels and Cattery opening soon in The Crags Plettenberg Bay.
Situated on 8 hectares in The Crags, Savannalands Kennels & Cattery will be opening for business in December 2010. It will comprise just 10 spacious runs for dogs, as well as 10 for cats. Both dog and cat accommodation will be a combination of indoor and outdoor facilities for each animal, with an option of indoor heating if required. Savannalands is owner operated and managed by Heather Hiscox and her husband, Stuart, who have their home on the property. A personal need for good pet boarding facilities for her 6 golden retrievers and 2 cats: a Siamese and a gorgeous Animal Welfare “special”, prompted Heather to explore the possibility of offering the service herself. Thorough market research showed there was a dire need for superior accommodation and care for both dogs and cats in the Bitou area and, having been animal lovers all their lives, Heather and Stuart decided to make the commitment to the project. Say local veterinarians, Drs Bert van Reenen and Laura Snyman, “There is a serious need for quality pet accommodation in our area….Knowing Heather and Stuart’s commitment to quality pet care, we fully support their idea of building kennels and wish them every success. Tel (044) 5333100.” Extensive research was done
through KennelDesign.com and CatteryDesign.com, internationally acclaimed kennel and cattery design companies in the United Kingdom, from which plans were drawn for spacious, stress-free accommodation for cats and dogs. But why accommodation for both cats and dogs? Well, the Hiscox’s already provide a loving home to their own dogs and cats and they realized that, similarly, many people own both animals, so it would add to client convenience, to offer accommodation for both on one property, albeit away from each other. Having gained the support of all the veterinarians in Plettenberg Bay, as well as from PAWS, Heather and Stuart are sure that this venture will become a great success. Letter via the Editor Last Sunday,10.10.2010 at around 4pm we were looking down from Keurbooms highground and saw Ocean Blue’s whalewatching boat the Damara operating just beyond the backline. Damara spotted a large female with a calf and approached slowly and followed the whales for about 15 minutes at a distance of between 10 and 15 meters. Damara suddenly found herself on top of the whales and judging from the whales reaction and proximity of the vessel we were sure there was a collision. The mother whale freaked out and did a violent 180 degree turn at speed and took off at full speed towards Grootbank. I am aware that there are rules about how close a vessel may approach whales, but not sure what the distance is. All of us who saw what happened knew that the skipper of Damara had clearly overstepped the mark. Perhaps Ocean Blue would care to explain why they have an idiot in charge of a vessel taking tourists to observe these amazing creatures. Whale watching is good for Plett, but in this case the priviledge was abused. Craig Dugmore,The Crags. We referred the letter above to Ocean Blue and received the following
Reply from Ocean Blue: Many thanks for forwarding this
letter to me and giving me an opportunity to give people an insight into the regulations regarding whale watching and more importantly the impact of the boats on our regular migrating Cetaceans that we have observed over the last decade. First of all, the regulation is quite simply that only a boat which is permitted by the government body of Marine and Coastal Managment (MCM) may approach Whales. The boat 'Damara' has such a licence, one of only two in Plett. Secondly, once a whale has been approached within 50m, the vessel may stay in a stationary position (i.e.. engines running

Best Price Best Quality but not engaged, thereby ensuring the whale is constantly aware of the boats presence but not endangering the animal with rotating propellers). The whale then can make the 'decision' to maintain the distance or approach the vessel. Thirdly, an encounter with a whale should be limited to 20 minutes unless the whale is too close to the proximity of the propellers to engage the engines. The encounter referred to by Craig Dugmore involved a whale pair, a mother and a juvenile (approximately 2-3 years of age due to its length of +/-7m). The Female, affectionately know as 'Zoe' by our crew has become a regular feature on our trips as she always immediately starts to approach the boat once we have come into close proximity of the animal. Its almost as if she is showing off her teenage child to us as she often places the smaller whale between herself and the boat, instead of as one would expect, that if feeling threatened in any way the larger female or mother would protect her child by shielding it from the boat. It is not uncommon for whales (including Zoe) to come under the boat and rub their backs on the hull, nudge the engines from behind and 'spyhop', lifting their heads out the water so they make eye contact with their above water surroundings. We have even had a whale place his chin, ever so gently, on the bow of the boat just so that he could gain a closer look at all the activity going on above board. I guess you would call this 'People Watching'! Behaviour of these animals is evident that they 'feel' comfortable and not threatened by the presence of our boats. I have no doubt that if these whales are sensitive enough to move ways when feeling threatened and similarly approach the boat when feeling comfortable and inquisitive. This is evident by the facts: 1. The annual increase of Southern Right and Humpback whales to our bay. Currently more than 10% per annum. Other areas such as Cape Town, Hermanus and Mossel Bay have not had the same increase. 2. More close encounters with whales approaching the boats directly are being experienced than ever before including all species of whales in our area of Southern Right, Humpback and Brydes .Our skippers are well trained and understand the behaviour of Whales and the approaches and movement of the vessel around these animals is dealt with in a sensitive and responsible manner. Research has shown that if alarmed or frightened (by jet skies
or irresponsible boat operators) then a whale will not only move away but leave the area completely. 3. There are regular unannounced inspections and visits by MCM ensuring that all permitted boats are maintaining the regulations, failure to comply would result in the loss of our permit. Ocean Blue is proud of having an impeccable record and being seen as a model to promote Whale watching in South Africa. We have many heart warming stories that we would be happy to share with you and your readers about some of the activities and behaviour patterns of these magnificent animals, but one last snippet involving 'Zoe' and her youngster (Zoe jnr). A few weeks ago I was surfing with a few mates off the Lookout point at the river mouth when we were approached by a very inquisitive Zoe jnr (she has a distinctive pink marking along the leading edge of her fluke). Sitting on our boards waiting for a set of waves to ride, the whale swam around us, directly under our boards and rose under and touched the feet of a completely surprised fellow surfer, by the name of Ryan. With this the young Zoe sped off at a rate of knots (Ryan still speechless) only to do a huge arching 180 degree turn and returned back for more. You can imagine the delight and joy we all felt having this beautiful creature share this watery space with us. Well. for the next hour or so this whale remained with us in the line up as if it was one of the regular local surfers, with many a time us having to pull out of a wave for fear of bumping into our newly found surf grommet. An experience like this is a privilege and a testament to the fact that within the confines of our Bay we must be doing something right that these massive creatures of the deep are not only increasing in numbers but are happy to 'rub shoulders' with the locals. All the best Yours in conservation Tony Lubner WHAT'S NEW IN PLETT – 21 OCTOBER 2010

BITOU MUNICIPALITY INTERRUPTION OF THE ELECTRICITY SUPPLY SUNDAY 24 OCTOBER FROM 06h00 TO 18h00 Bitou Municipal electricity consumers in Kwanokuthula and Kranshoek herewith are notified that the electricity supply will be interrupted on SUNDAY 24 OCTOBER FROM 06h00 TO 18h00 for tasks essential to the new 66 000 volt overhead lines under construction in Kwanokuthula and Kranshoek. We regret the inconvenience to our consumers, but we would emphasize that the new overhead line is one of the phases required to increase electrical capacity, which is essential to meet the rapidly growing demand for electricity in Plettenberg Bay. As the power may be restored before 18h00, consumers are warned to treat their supply as live at all times. Due to anticipated difficulties with restoring power supplies from cold, this will be done one area at a time. However, overload tripping may still occur and consumers are asked to assist by switching off non-essential electrical equipment until the supply network has stabilized. In the event of adverse weather conditions on 24 October 2010, particularly high winds, and the planned construction work cannot safely proceed, the electricity supply interruption will be postponed to Sunday 31 October 2010. On the 11th October a seal pup washed up on Central Beach and was rescued by ORCA Foundation volunteers and taken to Tenikwa rehabilitation centre. The seal was very under-weight and suffering from dehydration, as well as having some deep wounds on his fore flippers. It was noticed that the seal was not from the local colony of Cape Fur seals inhabiting the Robberg Peninsula, and was in fact an entirely different species. The animal was eventually identified as an Antarctic Fur seal most probably from a breeding colony on Marion Island, almost 2000km offshore of the South African coastline. After a week of treatment at Tenikwa, the seal’s wounds had healed and the animal was a much healthier weight. On October 18th a team of ORCA volunteers accompanied by Tenikwa staff headed out on an Ocean Blue boat to release the seal pup. Approximately 3miles off Central beach the pup was set free and began his long journey back south to his home on Marion Island. DR ADRIAN BOSMAN D.C. USA Chiropractor, Whalesong. Plett. IDT Executive visited Murray High School
IDT executives visited Murray High School last week Thursday with Bitou executive mayor Lulama Mvimbi and other delegates from Bitou Municipality. The visitors that were led by deputy public work minister Ms Hendrietta Bogopane Zulu and IDT CEO Ms Thembi Nwedamatsu had a walk around the Kwanokuthula based high school, guided by the school principal Mr Botes who showed them the school kitchen, where the food to feed 800 learners is being cooked by 6 volunteers, the vegetable garden which he said learners and staff take care for and computer room that is also used as the store room as groceries and bicycles are being stored. So far the school has given 30 bicycles to learners who travel more than 4 km to school. At the end of the tour Mrs Rosemary Murray, the founder of Plett Learning Centre that was the combined school (primary and high school) in Bossiesgif, gave the history of the school. Mama Rosie, as she is popularly known in the township especially by those who studied at Murray during her days, shared her ups and downs from 1991 on the mission to provide education to the black people who were living in Plett. She took us back to the days of the apartheid system and toldl us of the challenges they went through to raise funds, find teachers, classrooms, furniture and text books but through hard work and dedication a learning centre was fnally established in Plett . In 1994, 75 students wrote matric exams for the very first time and 63% of them passed, the school came up on the 3rd position of the passing rate in the area and 10th provincially Mrs Hendrieta Bogopane Zulu the deputy minister of public works was very impressed with the story of Mama Rosie, she said Mrs. R. Murray had written the story about the school that will be told for many years to come as she will always be part of Murray High School history. Registered service provider ported his principal saying students get drunk at school and some had been found with Tik at school premises and too many fights that had started in taverns during weekends. In the past a grade 9 learner had stabbed a grade 10 learner almost to death at school. Mr. Mnweba also encouraged community to take ownership of the school as the vandalism is another challenge as well as poor attendance of the parents to parents meetings. The mayor, Lulama Mvimbi who also attended a matric prayer meeting the following day at the school said Bitou Municipality had a good relationship with the school as they are involved in many educational campaigns such as back to school. On Friday he gave words of encouragement to the matriculants who also received presents from Bitou municipality. Yedwa Mayila

Herman Willemse - Tel: 083 701 7137 L.NGOQO MUNICIPAL MANAGER

A Thought for the Week.
Matt 22:15-16 [CEV] "The Pharisees got together and planned how they could trick Jesus into saying something wrong. They sent some of their followers and some of Herod's followers to say to him, "Teacher, we know that you are honest. You teach the truth about what God wants people to do. And you treat everyone with the same respect, no matter who they are." Some amazing words in these verses above – even Jesus' enemies acknowledged that He spoke the truth about God's will for people, yet they did not heed His words. The question should be asked: "What is it God wants people to do, what is His will for all people?" The Bible gives us the answer in the words of Paul: "...testifying both to the Jews, and also to the Greeks, repentance toward God and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ." [Acts:20:21 MKJV] Note also the fact that the men who
approached the Lord Jesus added these important words: "And you treat everyone with the same respect, no matter who they are." God is not a respecter of persons – in His eyes we are all exactly the same. This is evident from Paul's letter to the Romans, where he writes: "God doesn't accept people simply because they obey the Law. No, indeed! All the Law does is to point out our sin. Now we see how God does make us acceptable to Him. The Law and the Prophets tell how we become acceptable, and it isn't by obeying the Law of Moses. God treats everyone alike. He accepts people only because they have faith in Jesus Christ. All of us have sinned and fallen short of God's glory. [Rom.3:20-23] You may well ask: "But what exactly is meant by faith?" Biblical faith is not just mental assent, but rather a profound trusting in Christ and in the work that He has completed. Let me explain this by using the following analogy. Last year, during a trip to Canada, I had the opportunity to visit Niagara Falls on the Canadian side of the river. It reminded me of the true story of a certain daredevil who during the early 1900s attracted great crowds by pushing a wheelbarrow across a cable that had been fixed across part of this magnificent waterfall. One day, before staring his performance, he turned to the curious onlookers and shouted the question: "Do you believe the I can push this barrow across to the other side? Several shouted back: "Yes!, we do." At which point he turned to the a man nearest to him who had affirmed his belief in him and said: "Right, sir, will you please get in and I'll push you across." That is real faith. Many today believe that truth is relative and that what is true for one person is not necessarily true for another, this may be so in secular life, however, this does not apply when dealing with the Word of God; its truths apply to all man, of every generation, of every culture, anywhere in God's creation and it is eternal. We, too, need to respond to God's truth and to his will for our lives and put our faith in Him, and Him alone. Henk. NEW RELEASES 4 for R60! The door is now open for those less educated to read and learn more... The fire station offers added protection and is a wonderful asset too. After our glamorous deputy mayor, Mama Seyisi , in lovely traditional dress, welcomed all, the ward councillor, Cllr. Euan Wildeman said that the Crags is developing into a little town. Soon there will also be a small shopping Mall. The library cost 1.2Million and the Fire Station R1.3Mlllion . Both were municipal projects. He commended Mr Stratu and his department for jobs well done. He encouraged the community to read, for parents to read to their children. He also asked the community to take care of the library and the books. He thanked the volunteers who have been passionate about and will continue to assist the Library. The response time for getting to fires has been dramatically reduced with the new fire station. More volunteer firemen and women are needed. He thanked the rural fire associations which will continue to assist. The mayor, Ald. Mvimbi thanked the community for their patience and assistance. He said that after the 250 houses were built the library and fire station were the next priority. Services are being put in for another 230 houses. The municipal manager Lonwabo Ngoqo urged the community to WHAT'S NEW IN PLETT - 21 OCTOBER 2010
produce many graduates—to beat the challenges with the new services. He said that the municipality had recently assisted in Zawa zawa and the Old Age home, would continue to give the community good service. The program directors Ms Philiswa Mthethwa (in beautiful tradition dress) and Simon Jacobs did a super program and we were wonderfully entertained by the Good Shepherds Choir, Gospel singer Siyabulala, and Michael the Porcupine Singer and guitarist who sang a delightful medley of traditional Afrikaans songs. The crowd really enjoyed them all. At the unveiling of the plaque at the Library, the community (especially the children) were delighted to see the many books and tables in the library. At the Fire Station we all stood in awe as the firemen did a very professional marching display and proudly hoisted the flags. Plett has many talents! We trust that the Crags community will continue to enjoy and benefit from the Fore Station and Library.

Phakamisani Primary News
Third Term 2010 We opened the school of the highest note, 90% of learners and 98% of educators were present of the first day of the opening. This is a wonderful feeling that how the learners and educators take education as a serious matter. We salute the parents, NGO’s such as Bitou 10 Foundation, Municipality and Community for your contribution towards the school, you make us proud, keep it up. Together we can make a big change and difference in our society. The third term was very short and hectic but we managed to finish the mark schedules and learner’s report of foundation phase 1 congratulate educators for their hard work and commitment. The inter-senior phase educators are still busy with mark schedules and teacher’s reports. We are praying that grade 3 and 6 can pass at 50% and more in national exams. We overcame important issues such as the following: Learners got their report in different times; The school was semi-normal during the strike; Volunteers [Parents] taught learners during the strike; SGB and parents meetings took place; Coding and analysis of results were successful; The staff works as a solid team; Two new classes were approved by WCED. IMG and WCED officials visited us regularly; IQMS has began; Feeding scheme is also catering for the poor families of Kwanokuthula and crèches; Grade 6 had extra-classes on Saturdays and Wednesdays; Game fundraising was successful. Choir music is improving daily. Learners are very punctual and the culture of reading in the first period is improving dramatically. Scholar patrol is working very well. Our challenges are the following: Get better results in curriculum. Year plan 2011. Organogram should be drafted. Every staff member must have a job description. Assessment plan for the fourth term and the first term of 2011. Finish up IQMS of 2010. To open the library official. To complete new classes building. To have and install two big screen TV’s. To improve technology on interactive board in grade 7 class. Allocation of subjects, duties and classes. Draft and approve budget 2011. Music tour in Cape Town. Grade 7 farewell and closing party of educators. Mark schedules and learners report WHAT'S NEW IN PLETT - 21 OCTOBER 2010
[Inter-senior phase] We need school hall, science laboratory and sport field seats. Fundraising for music tour and farewell of grade 7. The most important at school is quality education. Quality education depends on quality educators. Quality educator must implement the high quality teaching. One of the features of the successful teachers, who are “Energy creators” that see the glass as “half-full”, a silver lining in every cloud and ask “what if”, is that they use three or four parts of appreciative enquiry for every one problem they need to solve. Meanwhile un-successive educators, who are “half-empty”, clouds for every silver lining and say “what more can you expect from these children “become enforcers of compliance at the expense of appreciative enquiry as they wrestle with their mounting problems. Strategy of improve the quality educators are following: Principal and SMT must appoint suitable educators in different grades. Train educators in teaching and content knowledge. To promote effective classroom management. Evaluate and monitor the work of teachers in curriculum. Disciplinary action must take place to anyone who misbehaves. Strong leadership and clear instructions are needed. Connection is key to success. Parents, volunteers during the strike, educators, learners, Bitou 10 Foundation, Circuit Team Panel No. 4, Municipality, friends of Plett, business sectors thank you to uplift intended of education in Phakamisani Primary. God bless you all From X.D. Faku [Principal]
JongmenseAs dit nie vir God was nie!
Deur, Kim Jones. Ek het my skoolloopbaan self verongeluk…(My gedagtes was verroes!)
Jongmense—As dit nie vir God was nie, Sou my lewe nie veranderd wees nie.

Bitou Business Buzz
MUSIC...to our ears. In June last year a Memorandum of Understanding was entered into between Bitou Municipality, The Bitou 10 Foundation, Private Business and the Field Band Foundation. In a letter addressed to the Mayor The Fund Manager Tony Lubner thanked the Bitou Municipality for helping to create the most incredible "Plett Field Band'. This last year the Plett band grew from strength to strength with tremendous accolades for their performances and skills acquired in such a short time, including the Silver Medal at the National competition in Johannesburg. Everyone was proud to witness Plett students participating in the opening and closing ceremony at the World Cup Soccer, viewed by millions world wide. A very encouraging statistic show

Is Prepaid electricity cheaper ?
Many home owners want to opt for municipal prepaid meters for their homes. The common misconception is that prepaid electricity is cheaper. This is not the case. Prepaid Electricity costs the same as non-prepaid electricity. The reason why people think that Prepaid Electricity is cheaper is WHAT'S NEW IN PLETT - 21 OCTOBER 2010
because they can see how much electricity they are using and so become more aware of their consumption habits. Installing a Wireless Electricity Monitor has the same effect on people. It's a proven fact that when people see how much electricity they are using, that they take steps to reduce the load even though electricity prices have increased, it is important to understand that your electricity bills can be significantly reduced and you can continue saving on your electricity bills. With electricity prices looking to go up every two years and government confirming that cheap electricity
prices are a way of the past in South Africa, it is important to start conserving electricity. There is a myth and misconception that if you run to your local council and get a prepaid meter, this will reduce your electricity costs because you get a cheaper rate. That is not necessarily true, not to mention that each council has different tariff rates, rules and regulations for different areas (it really does get complicated, but we shall simplify it). Calculating your electricity bills is extremely complicated. In your bills you may have more than one charge. For example: You get the kWh charge for what you used that month, then you have the DSM (demand site management charge) and depending on where you are you could have other fees added to your bill. When you move to a prepaid system, all the extra charges are calculated by your local council into the rate you pay per kWh. This means that the council won’t all suddenly lose money because you installed a prepaid meter, but will in fact calculate all inclusive charges in one rate. So why is everyone looking at prepaid electricity as a money and electricity saving mechanism? The reason behind most people running to get prepaid is simply because once you have a display that shows you your consumption, you become more conscious of the amount of electricity used, and without even knowing it, you start cutting down on electricity consumption. You switch off some lights and try to use less as you keep witnessing how fast your prepaid money is running out. For this reason, a prepaid meter from your local council can be very good, because you will spend less, but that is not the overall solution taking into consideration that a prepaid meter will cost you; at times; over R1,000, and in some cities over R3,000 or even more R7,000 for a three phase meter. Prices naturally vary from one municipality to another. Before you choose the prepaid option or a route in conjunction with that, you will want to consider other options that are cheaper PORT ELIZABETH, Stonechat SelfCatering/B&B: Private fully equipped, air conditioned units, a stone’s throw from Greenacres & Grey High School. Letter via the Editor For all the Staff at Pick n Pay
On behalf of many residents living in and around Plett, thank you to all the staff of Pick n Pay. You and your management have made this store a fabulous place to shop. This family store has gone the extra mile with their fresh food section. There is always local produce available, straight from our own dairies, fruit and vegetable farms. The bakery is busy all day producing top quality fresh bread and rolls. There is even a wonderful roast available every Sunday. The store is always clean, the staff friendly and helpful. Management have committed their lives to making daily shopping visits a pleasant experience. Recently there was a fire in Pick n Pay. The incident happened in the middle of the night, in the pouring rain. I noticed how one of my neighbours (a Pick n Pay employee) got up in the middle of the night, without complaining and drove to work to handle the situation. All the staff were there early the next morning, scrubbing and cleaning and making sure that the store could re-open to the public in the minimum of time. Running a family store of this size and calibre requires dedication and passion. The working hours are often gruelling. Christmas season shoppers are challenging. Management are on call night and day and often are at work while we enjoy ourselves. I really commend these people for their commitment and hard work! Of course food prices are increasing but Plett Pick n Pay does very well to offer locals healthy, quality food at reasonable prices. The fresh foods section is one of the best in our country! Keep it up Plett Pick n Pay! You make us proud. Plett Resident “ROBBERG HEATING & COOLING are the air conditioner, cold room and heatpump specialists in Plettenberg Bay and Knysna.

Bestaande organisasies, groepe of kerke is meer as welkom.
