The Plett Rage, the longest running Student Festival in the country is happening from this weekend… it promises to be even bigger and better than other years. We are looking for the nuts of a specific palm, the Queen Palm Cocus plumosa which has large fronds of (when ripe) orange fruits. The fruits are probably still green but you will know if you have one as they leave a real mess in your garden! Once the bunch starts turning orange it can be cut down as it will continue to ripen on the cut branch. These nuts are the favourite food of some of our endangered birds housed in the special aviaries next to Birds of Eden and stocks have now completely run out. Garden Route Adventurers World Class.

The gruelling Adventure Racing World Championship concluded in Tasmania last week with both South African teams finishing amongst the top ten teams. No fewer than eighty teams from thirty countries challenged for Adventure Racings premium prize which was contested over a punishing 700km course. The three men and one woman teams were required to sea kayak, raft, cave, mountain bike and run traversing some of the wildest regions of this remote island. The two South African squads; Team Merrell and Cyanosis finished 7thand 8th respectively just fifteen minutes apart after almost 150 hours of nonstop racing. The South African teams had been trading places for the entire duration of the race. Merrell caught them again 10 minutes before the final transition. “We saw them and thought, ‘we’ve got to move ... now!” said Tatum Prins. Bird added, “We ran right past them. It wasn’t a nice thing to do, but it’s a race. They wanted to beat us and we wanted to beat them!” Although a healthy rivalry exists between the two South African teams, the real enmity was reserved for the Australians who fielded no fewer than 40 teams at the World Championships. Despite the sporty nations overwhelming representation in the championship and the home turf advantage, the Australians did not manage to have one team finish in front of the South Africans. This must have been sweet revenge for Team Merrell who finished behind the Aussies in controversial circumstances in 2010. Cyanosis were pleased with their top 10 finish, which had been their objective at the start. “It’s good to have objectives,” said John Collins, “though when I saw who was racing I’d have been happy with top 20! It’s a good result as we’ve never really raced before as a team. The course was tough, very tough, and some of the stages were long. They just seemed to go on and on, but we really felt like we were out in the wilderness The strength of adventure sport in the Garden Route was underscoring in that each of the two South African sides had half their membership made up by locally based adventurers. SANCO elects new local executive committee

A Newly Elected Local Executive Committee of SANCO in Plettenberg Bay. On November 17, 2011 the Southern Cape Interim Committee of SANCO led by Comrade Bongani Swartbooi as Interim Chairperson of the Region and Comrade Bongani Dyani an Interim Organiser attended the launch of a local structure in Plettenberg Bay. They were accompanied by other leadership of SANCO from Mossel Bay and Sedgefield and they went not only to observe but to lead and adjudicate the process of elections and the implementation of the constitution of SANCO during the elections process. We all know that Plettenberg Bay community and SANCO in specific have been confronted by conflict and infighting for many years over leadership. This situation is not observed only in Plettenberg Bay but also in the surrounding towns in the region as result SANCO has lost focus on issue of bread and butter for the community of the region. This situation is about to change soon and we will request the support of this community to make that change a reality. The following leadership has been elected by the community of Plettenberg Bay and are the legitimate local structure of SANCO. As this year 2011 winds down, so do we in the Bowling Club. As we reflect on a good year of bowls and fellowship, we congratulate all members for their participation in games at all levels and look forward to getting together to renew rivalries and friendships in 2012. Of course we welcome every one who wishes to bowl through the holidays but our competitions are all won or lost for this year and we will be congratulating and rewarding winners at our year end lunch on 4th December at the Angling Club. Winners in November: Sea Horse: 1st Jenny Stevenson, Deon Hugo and Ulti Broodryk tied for second place and Nita Davis and John Dreyer were also winners. Fourth Anniversary of Plettenberg Bay’s Flood Kira Primo shares the story. Thursday, 22 November 2007, was a momentous day in the life of Milkwood Manor and Kees Groenendijk, whose diary that day had this inscription: “It is with our passions, as it is with fire and water: they are good servants but bad masters – Aesop” Just how bad a master water can be, became clear that evening. At 7.00 p.m. a guest came running into the restaurant yelling: “the river is at the swimming pool!” Unbelievable as it seemed, it was indeed true! Who would have thought that the Keurbooms River’s mouth, more than 300m away, should now be right on the Manor’s doorstep! The raging river had swept a major portion of the Lookout Beach, bush, sand and ablution block into the sea, as well as some 40 boats. The Manor lost some 650 sq.m. of land including its pool, but the building itself was saved by reefs of solid rock on the lagoon side, hidden under mud until then, that forced the torrent of water sideways. It was the worst flood since 1913! Panic stations! Sea Rescue ordering everybody to evacuate. Staff finding alternative accommodation and taking them there. What a relief the next day to see the building still standing! And what a relief for two guests to see Kees returning! They had gone to bed early and had not heard the

knocking on the door. The following morning they woke up as the Manor’s only occupants and with the sea on the doorstep. They must have wondered what they had to drink the night before…… On Saturday morning all hell broke loose. A queue of lorries arriving fully laden with huge rocks, some weighing up to 15 tons each, to form a foundation for the smaller ones on top. Ultimately, the amount of rocks totaled 5200 tons, brought in by 450 lorry loads. Since then, countless mussels and other sea creatures including the odd octopus have made the revetment their “home”. The in-house Lemon Grass - now “Seaside” - Restaurant has taken full advantage of its newly acquired location. Walls have made way for glass panels that may be moved aside to reveal 180° of exquisite views. And for the past four years, the sea and lagoon mouth have been peacefully lapping its terrace. Life in Plett

It has been a long week. Beloved left to go and play 'sponsered' golf in Thailand. I did try and find out exactly what that meant as our coffers are very low. Beloved does not drink alchol so the 'rounds' of drinks that the boys order could probably buy a new house in Plett. Beloved's coke being an extremely small part of it. Then there is the breakfast, lunch and dinner in that exotic country. There are green fees and all those little extras that 'silly me' has no idea what they cost. I just know golf is, in my mind, an extremely expensive sport. Still, he is having the time of his life and lots to tell when he returns. Hope he had a bit of time to slip into a shop or two to bring a little 'something' home. Sunday I went on my lonesome to a luncheon. Quite a few well known names there, so cannot divulge who, but was it ever a wild party. Everyone got into the spirit of things 'literally, quite quickly. Helped along by a few bottles of Pink bubbly, the party got even better. Much hilarity, a lot of good arguments and good stories. Because I am still on my diet I was not drinking so it was quite an eye opener to watch as everyones personalities changed. It was a bit like our younger days when the sky was the limit. Then the loud music DVD came on and so it was time to dance. Some people did a fairly good job and others fell from one set of arms to the other, or a chair back, or just missed the back and examined the floor. There was a new man in the crowd and he took it upon himself to be the disc jockey. That meant that he changed the tune whenever he did not like it, so it was a bit like someone with the controls for the TV, One minute you are into this and it dissapears and you are into that. No-one seemed to notice. Eventually a delicious lunch was served and I must admit my hostess did a splendid job but I don't think a lot of people were really able to appreciate the trouble she went to. Someone went to the wine rack and pulled out one of those huge bottles of red wine, a magnum. Many hands tried to put it back and many hands kept a hold on it. Once that was down the shute someone else approached the said wine cupboard and helped himself to another drinkie. The floor to this area was worn out. All the while the new bottles of bubbly had started circulating and with much merriment all drunk. I had a lady sitting next to me who decided she needed to dance, so as she started to stand

up in her 'slip on' high heels she just fell over backwards in slow motion. I tried to grab her but too late. She then sat on the broken upended chair for a couple of minutes trying to figure out just where she was and why on the floor. Her husband came to the rescue but he was not too good in the steadiness department. The two of them then just stood there wrapped around each other and tried to steady the world. A new lady to the crowd and her beau (an old friend of all of ours) were the first to leave. I think it got a bit too wild for this chick. Anyway I decided to leave then as well but I have lots of interesting information that was told to me in "secret' and so on. Amazing what happens when you do not partake. That party was no different to usual, it was me that was seeing it at a different angle. Oh well such is life, I will be back on the tables soon bottle in hand. Chinese Lanterns are made out of a balsa wood or thin wire frame, a paper shell and a candle in the centre. The candle is lit allowing the generation of heat to send the lantern skyward where it floats through the sky (similar to a hot air ballon) until the candle burns out and then the structure falls to the ground. Chinese Lanterns were (literally) made famous by the film Beach starring Leonardo Di Caprio and have also been depicted in the animated film Tangled. Chinese Lanterns appear to be set off (into the sky) to mark occasions such as weddings, birthdays or special moments! Once Chinese Lanterns are set off they are usually abandoned by the people setting them off and are seldom, if ever, followed by their owners to be properly disposed of wherever they land. It is widely believed to be near impossible to predict what they will do or where they will go once set off as they are at the mercy of the elements of the weather and wind conditions. It has also been debated, in some circles, that they may pose a threat to aviation once sent airborne. Chinese Lanterns, once airborne and floating through the sky, are often mistaken by eye-witnesses as red distress flares. Chinese Lanterns are also feared to be a fire hazard – if they are caught in the wind and land in trees or dry grass fields or on buildings while the candle is still burning! Wire frame Chinese Lanterns have been found on occasion to have ensnared small animals and birds sometimes long after they have been left abandoned wherever they land. Last week, on the Vaal Dam, a party group intended to set off 100 Chinese Lanterns into the air but agreed to stop following an appeal by the local NSRI. Later that night calls were received by eye-witnesses reporting red distress flares in the Deneysville area which were later, following an investigation, found to have been Chinese Lanterns but no one in the vicinity admitted to setting off the Chinese Lanterns. On 19th November, at 20h36, NSRI Knysna were activated following reports of red distress flares sighted. During

a search operation it was discovered that the sightings were in fact Chinese Lanterns floating airborne over in the vicinity of the Knysna coastline. Then also on 19th November, at 21h37, NSRI Simonstown were activated following reports from eye-witnesses of multiple red distress flares sighted in the Fish Hoek bay. Fearing a boat and persons to be in dire danger a full scale emergency response was activated and during a search operation it was discovered that the red distress flares were in fact mistaken and that the culprit was Chinese Lanterns but the source of where they came from could not be determined. The NSRI strongly believe that, based on the potential risks that chinese lanterns may pose and based on the number of false alarms that the NSRI respond to, which turn out to be chinese lanterns mistaken to be red distress flares, that the practice of setting off chinese lanterns, into the sky, is irresponsible behavior. Deon Truter, NSRI Plettenberg Bay station commander, said: "At 13h52 NSRI Plettenberg Bay volunteer duty sea rescue crew were activated following reports of a drowning in progress at The Island at Robberg Nature Reserve. "Our NSRI volunteer duty sea rescue crew launched our sea rescue craft SALLY JOAN and AIRLINK RESCUER and NSRI rescue swimmers responded directly to the scene and Metro EMS were activated. "A third sea rescue craft, a stand-by craft, was launched accompanied by a Metro EMS paramedic. "On arrival on-scene a 70 year old female was found to be safely out of the water but showed signs of near drowning symptoms and our medics attended to her on the scene and she was then transferred onto our sea rescue craft, which we had beached at Robberg Nature Reserve, and we brought her safely to our sea rescue base where she was transferred into a Metro EMS ambulance and transported to a local hospital in a stable condition for observation. "The female, from Austria, Hildegard Weisseneder, had been walking (hiking) with her husband and daughter at Robberg when, it appears, they had crossed a channel at a steep embankment and the casualty got into difficulties in the water. An unidentified bystander (who had reportedly also been hiking on the trail and was there at the time) rescued her from the water but had left the scene before rescuers recorded her

Greenwood WINS the eta 2011 Young Designers Category

Eskom and the Department of Energy are celebrating the 22nd Annual eta Awards. The aim of the eta Awards is to reward the proven application of sound energy efficiency principles in the commercial, industrial, residential, agricultural and education sectors. Energy efficiency is part of Eskom’s drive to ensure a sustainable electricity supply into the future. Given the significant emphasis place on energy efficiency by the Government of SA, the Minister of Energy is the official patron of the eta Awards. Greenwood Independent School participates in WESSA’s Energy and Sustainability Programme, which is funded by ESKOM. The young team at Greenwood, in Plettenberg Bay, examined the relationship between the climate, building design and energy usage. Their aim was to see what they could do, through research and recommendations, to influence local municipality officials to more efficiently design and build their RDP houses, for maximum energy efficiency. The team looked at how RDP houses are currently designed, taking field trips to local townships to look at house construction and to identify ways to make them more energy efficient. Through a series of experiments back at school, they found that RDP houses had no insulation meaning that precious heat would escape through the roofs and windows heat would escape through the roofs and windows, and so alternative, often more dangerous forms of heating would have to be used such as paraffin heaters, often the source of house fires. The team also found that those built facing north had a temperature rise of 6 degrees internally, compared with their west -facing equivalents, which saw no temperature rise at all.

Letter via the Editor Volunteering as a vet in Plett The past two months I had the privilege to help out as a graduated veterinarian with CVC, PAWS and the veterinary clinics in Plett. It was a great and fulfilling experience to help the dogs and cats in the townships by vaccinations, dippings, primary medical care and even euthanasations and interact with the people to make them take better care of their pets.
