SOCCER FEVER is still in full Swing ! What a lovely win from Bafana Bafana against France! It is so exciting to share this amazing occasion in our country ... People all rooting for the game… all united … sharing which games they intend to watch… talking football even if they’ve never kicked a ball or blown a vuvuzela or danced the Disci in their life ! We pray the goodwill and optimism stays as a lasting legacy.. As one of the supporter shirts spotted recently AfriCAN ! And we know that BitouCAN and Plettenberg Bay certainly CAN! Let’s not just feel the gees but start sharing the blessings. Have a fabulous week filled with lots of fun ! Plett for perfect pleasure!

A Thought for the Week.

Psalm 84:1-2. [NIV] "How lovely is your dwelling place, o Lord Almighty! My soul yearns, even faints, for the courts of the Lord; my heart and my flesh cry out for the living God." There are a great many things in life that draw our attention and cause us to think about - our health, our jobs, family life, the economy, the state of the world and the possibility of war and many more issues, such as the soccer world cup presently being played in SA. However important some of these things may be for us, the most important matter should clearly be our personal relationship with God, as this is an issue that has ramifications for the present as well as for eternity. The psalmist gives us a little glimpse of his own heart in this psalm - he not only thinks about God every now and then, but he yearns for God's daily presence in his life. The Good News Bible translates verse 2 as: " How I want to be there! I long to be in the Lord's Temple. With my whole being I sing for joy to the living God." Whereas the Israelites of the Old testament era, like the psalmist, could only meet with God in a physical temple, we - on the other

hand - have the opportunity to meet with God at any time and in any place. Those who have placed their faith - that is their trust - in the Lord, Jesus Christ, have the assurance that not only can they boldly approach our heavenly father and come into His presence, but that He has come to dwell in us by His Holy Spirit. This is why Paul could write: "Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit in you, whom you have of God? And you are not your own!" God's Word tells us that God created us to have fellowship with Him and to bring glory to His name. Why not take some time today and spend it with Him? Henk. SWIMMING LESSONS

Baie Dankie, Kim Jones CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGIST Dr. Ilza Botha. McGregor and van der Walt clean up in Keurbooms

Keurbooms- The Hansa SA Canoe Marathon Championships took place last weekend, amidst some of the best and worst weather Plettenberg Bay has to offer. Saturdays K1 racing enjoyed perfect sunny calm conditions, while Sunday’s racing saw four seasons in one day- sunny one minute, with howling wind and rain the next, and then back to beautiful sunshine. Unlike the weathers inconsistency, Hank McGregor and Grant van der Walt were consistently on top of their game throughout the weekend. McGregor claimed the SA K1 Marathon title on Saturday, with van der Walt in second, and then together they powered home to take the SA K2 Marathon title on Sunday, 5 seconds ahead of second placed Ant Stott and Graeme Solomon. Line honours aside, the story of the day must be that of Jacques Theron and Piers Cruickshanks who, in a heroic effort, clawed

The very promising Juniors girls category provided some much needed excitement in the Ladies competition, with Emma Horner and Jenna Ward just pipping the K1 Champion and silver medallist combination of Kerry Segal and Melanie van Niekerk to the post by a mere 9 seconds over the 17km course. Marathon organizer and representative of hosts Plett and Knysna Canoe clubs, Rob Hyde was very positive about the event, “It went very smoothly. It was fantastic to have a great sponsor, SAB Hansa, on board, John Oliver’s input was once again invaluable, and ultimately it was a fantastic event at a beautiful venue.” The team to travel to the World Marathon Championship to be held in Spain in September, will be announced later this week. The senior ladies race once again had a disappointing two boat turn out. The 2010 Hansa SA Canoe Marathon Ladies Champions, Lindi-May Harmsen and Abby Adie raced away to finish 3 minutes ahead of the Maree sisters from the Eastern Cape. In the Junior boys K2 racing, the K1 Champion and K1 Silver Medallist, Brandon van der Walt and Ivan Kruger, raced the 21km course in a league of their own, finishing 6 minutes ahead of the second placed boat of Joseph Williams and Diviona Pieterson.

I would like to thank Anton (driving a white bakkie with a trailer) very sincerely for rescuing Helen on the N2 in daylight on Saturday. Two men accosted her with a knife + tried to rape her . They cut her belt + injured her arm and hand in the struggle. Anton arrived, picked her up and carried her to his bakkie. A very grateful thank you from Jacqui Struben & Helen’s Auntie Annie

Bitou Youth Month programme – Thank you

Thank you to our Mayor, The Bitou Municipality Youth Unit, as well as organizers Clyde, Bjorn, Lennard and Nompumezo. It was an amazing honour to be presenting your workshops and motivating so many of the talented young locals in our different communities, together with Adele Potgieter, The Plett Music Academy, The Field Band Foundation, and Louné Polsen School of Dance. There is so much talent and latent potential among our young people, especially in the areas of Fine Arts, Poetry and the Performing Arts which include Drama, Music and Dance. Arts and Culture is undoubtedly one of our town’s strong assets, and we certainly have many experts in these fields, whom I know will be more than willing to get involved for the sake of our youth. We’ve come to the conclusion that Plett’s indeed got talent! Thanks and well done to you all on an excellent Youth Month initiative!! Leigh Dunn

Caring for abandoned babies Something to celebrate - we have at last been registered as a non-profit organisation! Two more children found a haven in the house ...now 9 children to love and feed. We would like to ask for any unwanted or unused outside swings, bicycles or tricycles. We also need a small piece of paving as well as an outside roof cover of some kind. Any food clothing items, nappies are most welcome. Best is to visit us if you feel to become involved in this very worthy community project. We do not have any financial backing and we rely solely on the involvement of the community. We also want to thank each and everyone who has been helping us in any way. Be assured that we are enormously grateful. Celia 073 110 7014, Marie-Luise 073 067 1528

The Bottom Line

1 It’s all begins with your self image – “I was created in the image of G-d;” in other words “I am not a higher form of ape as those who want to destroy my G-dly image would like me to believe. In fact I am a composite of two souls, and that is why obviously on one hand, yes, I have instinctual desires necessary for survival like all animals such as the pleasure associated with sating hunger etc. but that is only the shell of who I am. What makes me unique is my unique ability to act altruistically, something that no animal can do, and that all great people do, do.” Additionally if I am Jewish I contain a very special soul which is considered G-d Himself, and it is from this soul that the characteristic “Jewish sacrifice gene” demonstrates it’s irrational, or not limited by rational thought desire, to sacrifice even my very life for the ideals that are more precious than life. In other words “I am light, containing a unique ability to brighten up someone else’s moment, day, and even life.” 2. Unlike an animal, by using the innate superiority and self control afforded by rational thought I am able to control myself and act the way I think I should, not only the way I want to based on my instinctive drives. 3. The way we work, is that our souls produce desires and our minds conceive of methods of how to obtain those desires. 4. The more I focus on a single method the more I fall in love with it; for example the reason some people choose to study profession a. instead of b. is because their fascination and continued fascination with it led to an emotional love, and hence equivalent desire, to pursue that goal.

Open 7 days a week

All the knowledge in the world won’t get me to act, it is only through continued thinking, developing feelings or a belief for a certain method that action results. 5. The Creator who not only fashioned me but everything, The cause of everything that ever was, is, and will be, desires that with my own free choice I choose to be compassionate, loving, and generous, instead of insensitive, spiteful, and stingy. 6. The method to achieving the Creator’s desire can be summed up in the Baal Shem Tov’s way of life which is to “fear no-one but have reverence [an actual constant fear of feeling ashamed before the ever watchful eye of the Creator] and to love unconditionally with all your heart and all your soul, to the point of being ready to give your life for your fellow Jew (friend.”) 7. Elimination of fear is only possible if one is constantly cognizant, through actively being grateful [hence Jewish prayers, blessings, and the like,] for all that the kind Creator compassionately gives you. Fear, is a byproduct of insecurity, when you are aware of the Creators constant kindness you will never feel insecure. 8. Love for your fellow Jew (friend,) is based on seeing the similarities between the two of you. By elevating the value of your friend’s, spouse’s, and fellow Jew’s goodness, their G-dly soul, beyond what they can do for you financially, emotionally, or in any other physical way, you allow like David and Jonathan had, an unconditional cherishing admiration and love that supersedes even a kingdom. 9. Every day you should say “I herby accept upon myself the commandment to love my friend as much as myself” with the meditation that in order to please G-d, in

fact to be considered a whole human being in G-d’s eyes, it is dependent on seeing yourself as only a half; only through uniting with a fellow Jew (friend) can two halves become one – E Pluribus Unum – and the resulting unity, harmony, comradery and unconditional love appears as a single whole in G-d’s eyes. 10. Remember when it comes to what the world can offer you materially, you are far better off then 50% of the world (whom lack basics) and when it comes to how giving you can become, you will never achieve the selflessness of the great saints of the world beginning with (your ancestors) Abraham, Isaac, Jacob continuing to great heroes of selflessness in the modern era such as the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Schneeroshn, who never took a vacation, working quite literally forty years straight (without an official salary) for the betterment of humanity. Ask G-d to help your soul admire, respect, adhere to and become like the saints. MAZDA 323 1.3 TARZAN only 141000km. Its Aint!!!

Some either say love is in the air. Its hard to forget the one you love, Even more difficult to love from the bottom of your heart. The point is its aint. Some rather say love is blind, so thicker and deeper, so far away but love is love. Some can’t even say a single word because love is too much bleeding. They can’t explain because it is aint. Some told me that love doesn’t exist never ever before but while some aint. Others normally keep quiet because love it’s a puzzle, an unfair game, love is unkind and no one can explore its meaning. There is nothing such as love it can’t be found underneath and above, it is aint. By Aron Bomsi “Ero” 074 268 7212

If I Had My Child To Raise All Over Again

Recycling is easy in Plett WHAT CAN WE RECYCLE? Place glass, cardboard, paper, plastic, tins and aluminum in a grey bag to differentiate it from household rubbish which goes to the municipal refuse site. WHERE CAN WE PLACE BOTTLES? If you land up with an excess of glass it can be placed at the blue bottle banks situated on Beacon Way, at the taxi rank in town, in Longships Drive and on the corner of Piesang Valley and Robberg Roads. WHEN TO PLACE YOUR RECYCLING OUT FOR COLLECTION? It is important to have it ready by 8 am or the night before the day of collection. HOW IS RECYCLING COLLECTED? It is collected by a private contractor. It is collected the day after your black bag is collected in from homes in town. It is collected from businesses every day. Your full grey bags should be replaced with empty ones. Rural areas can drop recycling off at the Municipal Depot on Marine Way. WHAT IS THE BENEFIT TO RURAL RECYCLERS? Before you can burn rubbish, a permit must be obtained from Protection Services. Rather than running the risk of burning rubbish or digging new rubbish dumps, it may be easier to drop your recyclable waste off when you come to town. Most household refuse is recyclable. WHAT IS NOT SUITABLE FOR RECYCLING? Polystyrene, cartons with plastic coating (e.g. long life milk or juice). Dirty items which have not been rinsed and are contaminated with food.

Reader’s Digest Things

I’d Like to Hear - But Won’t

From my car mechanic: “That part is much less expensive than I thought.” “I’ve never seen anyone maintain his car as well as you do.” “You could get that done more cheaply at the garage down the street.” “It was just a loose wire. No charge. From my son’s preschool teacher: “Everyone misbehaved today except Michael.” “Michael traded his chocolate bar for carrot sticks.” “I wish we had 20 Michaels.” From a shop assistant: “The computerized cash register is down. I’ll just add up your purchases with a pencil and paper.” “I’ll take a break after I finish waiting on these customers.” “We’re sorry we sold you defective merchandise. We’ll pick it up at your home and bring you a new one or give you a complete refund, whichever you prefer.” From a contractor: “Whoever worked on this before sure knew what he was doing.” “I think I came in a little high on the estimate.” David Grimes

If I had my child to raise all over again, I would build self-esteem first, and the house later. I would finger-paint more, and point the finger less. I would do less correcting, and more connecting. I would take my eyes off my watch, and watch with my eyes. I would care to know less, and know to care more. I would take more hikes and fly more kites. I would stop playing serious, and start seriously play. I would run through more fields and gaze at more stars. I would see the Oak tree in the acorn more often. I would be firm less often, and affirm much more. I would model less about the love of power, and more about the power of

LOVE.

CAN'T LEAVE YET.

Today, dear Lord, I'm 80 and there's much I haven't done. I hope that you will let me live until I'm 81. But then if I haven't finished all I want to do, Would you let me stay a while, until I'm 82? So many places I want to go, so very much to see Do you think that you could manage to make it 83? The world is changing very fast, there is so much in store, I'd like it very much to live to 84. I know dear Lord, it's much to ask ( and it must be nice in heaven), But I would really like to stay until I'm 87. I'm 90 Lord my mind is sound I like it here… I van still walk around, My time is limited, I know and some day I will have to go. I'm not greedy or guided by fears, I want o see what happens in the next few years . I'm sure you've heard this plea before… But my bags WILL be packed at 104!

Epilepsy and the Teenager

It is always a shock for a family to learn that a child or youngster has epilepsy. However, the parents can develop an understanding, loving and accepting environment in which their teenager can grow, believing in his/her own ability to succeed in life. EPILEPSY COMPLICATES ADOLESCENCE: Teens and their parents share the same highs and lows during this stormy period involving rebellion, independence, experimentation, dating, driving and concerns for the future. Parents must be sensitive to their teen’s insecurities, peer pressure and need for support. The nature of the relationship with their parents will strongly influence the impact of their epilepsy, because epilepsy can aggravate problems of low self esteem, dependency, mood and behavioural difficulties. DIFFERENT TYPES OF SEIZURES: If the entire brain is affected by the seizure activities, it is called generelized seizures: falling to the ground, jerking, foam forming at the mouth and lasting 1-4 minutes (Tonic Clonic seizures) or the person loses muscle tone and sags to the ground (Atonic seizures). Another may stiffen, but no jerking and may end up falling (Clonic seizures). Absentias are short spells (10 – 15 seconds) where a child stares in front of him and continues with the same story afterwards. Myoclonic jerks involve mostly jerking of the arms. Partial seizures happen when only part of the brain is affected. It may be simple partial: strange smell or taste, flickering lights, sudden headaches, tingling in the arm or butterflies in the stomach. Complex partial seizures last 1 – 2 minutes and the person will remain on his feet but he doesn’t know what is happening around him. He may end up in dangerous situations like walking in front of oncoming traffic. SOME CAUSES: In about 50% of all people with epilepsy, the causes are unknown. In other cases some of the main causes may be any serious head injury, lack of oxygen or brain damage at birth, infections like meningitis or encephalitis, brain hemorrhage e.g. during a stroke, brain tumors, severe alcohol and drug abuse, to name but a few. TREATMENT: Once the diagnosis of epilepsy is made by a doctor, the person will be placed on the correct medication for the specific type of seizure. There is no cure for epilepsy, but some young children may outgrow it. The Anti-Epileptic Drugs help to control the seizures so always take the medication as prescribed by the doctor and only stop or change the medication on his advice. Up to 80% of all people with epilepsy can be so well controlled by the medication that they can lead normal lives. Even if it is controlled, epilepsy can torment a teen, arousing fears of isolation, ridicule and possible humiliation. All medication has side effects and it is important to use treatment that will suit your body. Discuss side-effects like weight gain, double vision and dizziness with your doctor. With a few changes these could possibly be eliminated. RESTRICTIONS: Restrictions on activities can further accentuate differences from other peers. The following should be avoided: contact sport e.g rugby and boxing, as well as diving in planning a career, people with epilepsy can do almost any kind of work but an airline pilot, bus- or taxi driver, fireman or working with power tools, are out of bounds, as these jobs may endanger the lives of others.

Many famous sportsmen like Jonty Rhodes and Jake White achieved their goals despite having epilepsy. HOW TO COPE WITH EPILEPSY? Overcome your fear of seizures: talk about your feelings and your epilepsy. Find out everything about your seizures – knowing about epilepsy will help you feel in control. Start to become independent do more things for yourself and take your own medication ; pursue a healthy lifestyle; avoid alcoholic and high caffeine drinks; take your medication regularly as prescribed. At school: If necessary, ask for more time to write tests or exams. If you are behind, ask an educator’s help. Study in good time for tests and exams to eliminate stress which may trigger seizures. Driving: Accept the fact that you may be unable to drive: use public transport. If your seizures are well controlled later on, you may obtain a driver’s license. Don’t blame your epilepsy for everything – a

boyfriend or girlfriend may break up with you and sometimes your seizures may not be the cause. BASIC FACTS: Epilepsy can happen to anyone at any time of their lives irrespective of age, race, lifestyle and intelligence. One seizure does not mean it is epilepsy – it needs to occur more than once in the same manner. A person is the same before and after a seizure – it is only a brief interruption in their lives. An epileptic seizure is a sudden, temporary change in brain activity caused by unusual electrical discharges (like a thunderstorm in the brain). Active epilepsy means one seizure in 5 years. Women with epilepsy should consult their doctor before becoming pregnant or soon thereafter to prevent damage to the fetus. Some medication may neutralize contraceptives and unwanted pregnancies may result. For more information, call: 0860epilepsy (toll free) and you will be directed to your nearest branch. Local Artists Advised by DJ Tira

Plett’s got talent workshop had took place last, it was very disappointing to see a poor attendance from the artist specific in New Horizons venue which was supposed to be packed with artists from Kwanokuthula, New Horizons, Qolweni and Bossiesgif as the areas had the most hype and creative young people but they missed a workshop that would be helpful to them and their future. The workshops were facilitated by Plett Music Academy instructors a music institution that is based in Plett Community Church offering training in different music instruments, vocal and sound engineering courses. Although they could not inform artists about everything in music within one day they tried their best on making sure that those who attended had gained something. In the workshop there was also a surprise motivational speaker “DJ Tira” a national DJ and owner of a successful company Afro Entertainment with most successful artists that include the award winning group BigNuz of Umlilo fame, and DJ Cindo one of the successful female DJ’s. The local artist had asked questions such as his advice on creating a healthy relation between artist and government specially youth development officials as he was quoted giving credit to KZN government for their achievement during SAMA award and advice on motivating or encouraging local artists to work together as it is the case with Durban artists. DJ Tira also entertained in the Youth day that was held in Qolweni last week. The same evening Bafana Bafana was humiliated by Uruguay and decreased their chances of qualifying for the next round. Now the only thing we can do is to wish to beat France that is based on our neighborhood town of Knysna to be beaten by a high margin of goals by Bafana and also wish that there will be no draw between Mexico and Uruguay. By the time you read this article you will be already know if we are still in the world cup or out. At the moment there is nothing we can do but keep on supporting our national team and enjoy the first ever world cup on African soil. Yedwa Mayila

introduction by DJ Tira was motivating as he was born in the rural areas of KZN and moved to Durban for tertiary education but that did not stop him on achieving his dream of becoming the top DJ the country is celebrating for and that came out of hard work and commitment to the game it also meant that even the young artist from Plett if he/she is dedicated can make it. On his speech he said no one can stop a good song so the artist must keep on making music or they must not be scared of giving

We can let go of the past and of the future. Now is the only time there is and each instant is for giving. We can learn to love ourselves and others by forgiving rather than judging. We can become love finders rather than fault finders. We can choose and direct ourselves to be peaceful inside regardless of what is happening outside We are students and teachers to each other. We can focus on the whole of life rather than the fragments. Since love is eternal, death need not be viewed as fearful. We can always perceive ourselves and others as either extending love or giving a call for help.

Objection is hereby lodged for the consolidation of erven 1668, 1675, 1676,1677 & 8786 (Plettenberg Bay) to consolidated erf No 12529 (Plettenberg Bay) and the removal of restrictive conditions of title and rezoning from single residential to general residential of the consolidated ref 12529 (The erf is bordered by Beachyhead Rd, Cordovan Crescent and Tarbett Ness Rd). 1 The increase in traffic will be untenable. A fifty room hotel operating at full capacity means the coming and going of a considerable number of guests, staff and deliveries. The streets are narrow and the site is unfortunately situated as the one entrance road has sharp turns. The other leads into one of the busier roads in the neighborhood. These roads in general were not designed for traffic at the intensity which will be reached if the application is approved. 2 The parking provided for by the proposed development will not be anywhere near sufficient to provide for the additional demand. 3 There are to the order of twenty lodges and B&Bs in the immediate area. The proposal is thus in direct competition with WHAT'S NEW IN PLETT – 24 JUNE 2010

the existing hospitality establishments . 4 The developers intend to apply for a hotel liquor license. The area is a quiet upmarket residential suburb. Licensed premises no matter how well controlled, is inconsiderate to say the least. 5 Staff will not reside on the site. This means that they will generally be transported by bus to their homes after their shifts .The disturbance caused by this traffic late at night cannot be downplayed. 6 The hotel is designed to incorporate a luxury spa and swimming pool(s). In the current climate of water shortages the restrictions on such features elsewhere means that the demands for water by this development cannot be condoned. 7 Residential properties next to and in the vicinity of a noisy, bustling establishment such as a hotel suffer from depreciation in value as the attraction of a peaceful, quiet community is destroyed. Should this application succeed no recompense will be made for the diminution in value of the owners properties. In addition any expected increase in rates income generated by the hotel, for the Municipality will be offset by the reduced value and thus rates income, from the surrounding properties. 8 The developers propose a huge multi million development in a quiet, upmarket residential suburb. The existing residents purchased and developed their homes in good faith expecting the local authority to protect them from such egregious developments. The Municipality will be failing in its duty as the guardian of this trust if the development goes ahead. 9 The developers have as usual and undoubtedly promised to increase job opportunities to justify the march of progress. What in fact will happen is a degradation of the environment, and that degradation cannot balance out the

promised advantage. The damage to be done to these homeowners not only in the diminution of the value of their properties but also to their quality of life, is not to be considered. 10 The ultimate and final reason for damning this development is that sites are available elsewhere, just as attractive for the developers purpose albeit with the minor disadvantage that they may not be as close to the beach. Hotel development on numerous alternative sites will not cause damage to the environment anywhere near as intense as the current application. Should anyone wish to be a signatory to the letter of objection, please print out 2 objection letters, initial bottom of first 2 pages of each set, write name, sign and insert erf number. Then post, BY REGISTERED LETTER, to the Cape Town address and to the Plett address – to reach destinations by 25th June 2010. Please add any other thoughts re objections to this letter. Please fax / email objections by Friday 25th June Many thanks, (Mrs) Charl Weavind 083 266 1551 for any queries.

Traffic Laws. How do our Traffic Department decide between who and how the Plett traffic laws are imposed? I happened to be standing outside the Beacon Isle QuickSpar collecting for PAWS on Friday 18 June and observed the following action of a Plett Traffic Officer. He parked his car in the sand opposite the SPAR and got out and just stood on the side of the road. I thought he was watching for traffic doing U-turns into the SPAR parking, but Oh No. I observed one vehicle stop right in front of him, - if he had been 200cm further out they would have driven over his feet - hold up all the traffic behind them and then proceed to do a U-turn into the parking. What did he do? Nothing!! What he was obviously doing was looking for people not coming to a complete stop at the Longships Drive stop sign. A few moments after this first incident, he jumped into his car and with sirens blaring, chased off after an SUV. I was unaware what they had done as I was still busy watching the first car battling to maneuver into the parking. He eventually came back and again watched cars doing U-turns into the shopping area and again only pulled up an SUV for not coming to a complete stop. I am sure nobody has been killed for slowing down and not coming to a dead stop on the Longships Drive turnoff, but there must have been some near misses with people doing U-turns. Why was a solid white line painted on the road in that particular area if not to stop accidents? I was told that a few weeks back there were no less than 3 traffic officers standing in that particular area doing nothing!! Drive around Plett and see how many motorists are talking on their cellphones and not concentrating on the traffic around them. By the amount you see, the traffic officers don’t seem to do anything about it. I know we have a new Chief of the Protection Services and as the Traffic Department come under him, so might I ask if the new broom is trying to sweep Plett’s streets clean. COMMUNICATION...name of the game. I was interested to read an article in the latest 'Whats New' namely questions raised by 'Residents of greater Plettenberg Bay'. Going back a considerable number of years the Municipality appointed the late Alec Smart as Town Clerk. It proved to be an excellent choice, Alec had 'the finger on the Pulse' as the saying goes. Besides many innovative ideas, he decided that the residents of Plett needed continuous updating as far as the development of the town was concerned. He started a bimonthly publication titled 'The Dicky Bird' which covered the various municipal topics of the day. It was very much appreciated by the community. Maybe our Council could consider a similar publication. The Chamber of Business has decided to look into publishing a newsletter addressed to its members in which the content would deal with the various aspects presented to Council for decisions. The various questions stipulated by the residents would be dealt with. Each member of the executive committee of the Chamber of Business, best qualified to deal with a certain item, would report his findings in the letter. It will most likely be a bi-monthly publication and published in this column over a number of editions. The Chamber of Business has good relations with the Municipality and Council and will endeavour to make the letter a success. Greetings, Ald. Pierre Koep WHAT'S NEW IN PLETT – 24 JUNE 2010

Yeoman’s Service "Three cheers for Bitou's water department, they are amazing!!! The poor guys were soaking wet, working in icy cold conditions in the rain - Rudy, Jonathan and Clifford. What great servicemen. Your efforts on 15 June are much appreciated. Also thanks to supervisor Wellington for getting the whole shebang started. Bonuses all round to the above. They dug out a faulty meter, repaired a stuck tap, and re-placed the whole indaba up out of the soil so the meter can be read monthly without requiring earthmoving equipment. All this with smiles on their faces. Thanks again to Bitou Council."

Snippets for the Week … by Heidi

Managed to sterilize 7 dogs this week. Thank you to everyone who continues to help with this vital project. We have found terrible cases of abuse in Qolweni and New Horizons recently. I was called to collect 2 unwanted dogs from Qolweni. The owner had decided to keep 2 females, which I will have sterilized. On inspection, I found that his recently acquired Boerboel pup, which has to be sterilized, was tied up in a cordoned off muddy area of approx 1m x 1m, with a plastic crate covered with pvc sheeting as her only shelter. How on earth can I return this dog to these appalling conditions? On the same day, I was asked to remove a sick dog from a property in New Horizons. This dog was starving and tied up to a trailer, which was her only shelter. She was covered in oil. Her tormented soul is now at rest. Next distress call was regarding a beautiful, Border Collie. She was tied up in a wooden shack with approx 1m x 2m of space to live in. The flooring was cold, compacted earth. She was sitting in her own urine. This dog was given to the owner by his employer, who had in turn, left her in someone else’s care, as he cannot accommodate her. When confronting the owner, he told me that he had tied her up in the shack, as he did not want her to have puppies (She was NOT even in season!) I have arranged to have this dog sterilized this week. How on earth can I return this dog to these appalling conditions? Then came the distress call regarding a dog crying incessantly at a Tavern. This dog was closed up in an outside room 1m x 2m. It was pitch dark inside and pad locked. His bed was a piece of white melamine. When I asked the owner if he still wanted the dog, the children said I can take him, as they will just get another! The owner has decided to keep this poor animal. I will continue to monitor this inhumane situation. Something urgently needs to be done, regarding the unacceptably high abuse, concerning animal rights and welfare in Plettenberg Bay. I suggest we work towards a “Zero Tolerance Approach” and no time should be wasted, as the dogs are subjected to this suffering each and every
