Well, it is Monday morning or should I say afternoon. Funny how time flies when you are having fun, like unpacking suitcases and then re-hanging three quarters of the clothes as the weather in Jo'burg was HOT. To get to the beginning of the story, had to fly up to Jo'burg for my dear uncle's funeral. It was a blessing for him as he has been in pain for months from the Big C. I was going to leave on Tuesday and then remembered "THE VOTING' . So I booked for Wednesday AFTER I had put my little cross. We got to the school voting place at seven and thought we would just fly in, but no, a HUGE queue. After muttering and glaring at my air ticket and the people who were holding us up, my beloved said we could not make the plane and the

voting. With feet on fire I flew to the sweet ladies at the IEC table and explained my predicament. No sooner were the words out of my mouth and beloved and I were next in line. We placed our crosses and beloved dropped me at the airport in time to catch the Kulula flight. Had to keep fingers crossed as they have let me down in the past, but this time I made it. I have to tell you that on my trip upstate, nowhere did I see any town that could vaguely compete with Plett's clean streets and boy did I travel; to Vander Bijl Park, Johannesburg, Pretoria and Alberton. We win when it comes to keeping our town clean. A few things close to my heart are charities for children, the old folk, animals and the justdesperate. Heidi does a splendid job with the animals but she needs more assistance, and these little street children who run around in
town begging, just break my heart. There was a time when a friend of mine, Liz, got all the street children off the streets. Now they are slowly creeping back and it is so sad to see children in rags begging. There also seems to be more unemployed people on our streets. Our Kulula plane journey back was VERY frightening. The pilot said he was going to land and was on his way down and then all of a sudden he pulled the plane back up into the sky and, well, my imagination went wild. Planes crashing into us, etc. Then we seemed to be circling the airport, dipped down to land and then back up again. This time the pilot spoke, but not before my heart and many other people’s hearts had stopped. He said, I think, something about the busy landing space but I have never seen so many people praying. I think when things in a plane go awry, the pilot or the co-pilot should at least get onto the intercom and talk to the passengers so that the peeps in the back do not think the Captain has died. Kulula train their cabin staff to be funny and light hearted so why don't the boys in the front go on the same course? Well, I think that is it for now, have to go and put away the tons of stuff I packed for nothing. In spite of the nip in the air, and the days drawing in, we continue to enjoy beautiful days for bowling and have had a good turn out most days, probably in part due to the South green being such a pleasure to play on. Sea horse Competition this month was jointly won by Ray Coetzee and Graham Morris, followed by Rose Lugg, Glen Dietrich, and tied for 5th place, Phyllis Sutton and Rodney Grosskopff. Congrats to all and thanks to our sponsors, Island Diner, River Café, Rod and Reel Scotty’s and Look Out Deck restaurants. Members enjoyed a delicious and happy Mother’s Day Braai on the 9th May. Thanks to Rene for taking over the catering again for a while and her tasty sosaties. Salads as always were outstanding meat cooked to a ‘T’. Total B.I. Bowling Club News
Our greens have received good reports after an inspection by SC and we once again thank our Greens Committee for their maintenance. We also wish to thank Nell Meyer for her continued work in the gardens, which are looking lovely after the recent rain. It has been confirmed that
the Club will host a group of bowlers from England on the 11th November. We wish our Bar Manager "happy holidays". Rob has assured us that he has left the Bar well stocked! We welcome Claire home after her overseas holiday and thank Brian for taking over the finances in her absence. John Everson reported that 58 players took part inthe Barefoot bowls day. The record was broken but final results have not been received. Our next Friday dinner will be 27th May and the next Trivial Pursuit with hot soup and rolls will be on 1st July. We have two prospective new members, both are receiving coaching. A Fun Day has been arranged for Sunday 12th June - 10-30 for 11am. Jewish Ladies Guild teaching our
children the Spirit of Giving. The Jewish ladies guild of Plettenberg bay Jewish community undertook a programme to assist the privileged children of the greater Plettenberg Bay area to be warm this winter. This was done by organizing a winter warmth programme, incorporating all the schools, senior, junior, pre-school and crèches in the Plett area. A letter was sent to the parents asking that each child donate an item of good second warm clothing from his her wardrobe. Schools approved and responded favorably to this project, especially from the aspect that it is important for children to learn to give and not always be on the receiving end. The handover ceremony took place on Thurs 19 May the Jewish community centre

Letter via the Editor A Thousand words will not leave so deep an impression as a good deed Winter is well on it’s way and it is starting to become seriously cold in the evenings. While you are all cosy in your bed snuggling under a blankie sipping on freshly brewed. Koffie there are many homeless that shelter outside in the freezing temperature. Have you ever thought that those old clothes in your cupboard can make just a little difference in their lives, or maybe just giving them a loaf of bread and a can of soup. Giving to the less fortunate will not make a big dent your pocket. Don’t you just love that feeling when someone gives you a present but don’t you just love the feeling when you give someone a gift and their face lights up. It reminds me of a man with his own company where every time someone buys him a pair of shoes he will give a pair to someone who needs them. A deep impression on that person. Stop talking about how good you are, and how you give so much to people when in fact those are only words not action. Act out an those words and make a change. Because indeed ’’

A 1st for Africa ‘Paint a Future’

Land use changes from a Bird’s-eye View - World Migratory Bird Day 14-15 May 2011
There are only about 1 000 Blue Swallow breeding pairs left in the world. The South African population is listed as Critically Endangered and its numbers are declining, with several local extinctions occurring in the past decade. Loss of suitable habitat due to land use change is the main reason for this decline. World Migratory Bird Day was initiated by the Secretariat of the African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbird Agreement (AEWA) in collaboration with the Secretariat of the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) in 2006 and is a global awareness-raising initiative, highlighting the importance of and need for the protection of migratory birds and their habitats. This year’s theme is ‘Land Use Changes from a Bird’s-Eye View’. The Blue Swallow Hirundo atrocaerulea, an intra-African migrant, is of particular interest to the Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT), as it breeds in South Africa’s mist-belt grasslands and is a flagship species for our Threatened Grassland Species Programme. The species is also of major interest to EWT partners such as the Percy FitzPatrick Institute of African Ornithology, on account of the current lack of knowledge regarding its movements between breeding and wintering ranges. Grasslands are possibly the most threatened biome in the world, with a mere 1.4% being formally protected. Grasslands are also one of South Africa’s most threatened ecosystems with only 2.2% formally conserved and some 60% already irreversibly transformed. The major threats facing them are urban development, mining, forestry, agriculture, alien invasive plants, overgrazing and inappropriate fire management. Blue Swallows rely on mistbelt grasslands in particular for their survival, both as foraging areas and for nesting throughout their summer breeding season. In South Africa, these grasslands are found at medium to high altitudes (750 – 1 900 metres above sea level) along the north-eastern escarpment formed by the Drakensberg, with high rainfall (> 1 000 mm per annum) and frequent advection fog. In these areas the swallows breed in existing holes such as Aardvark Orycteropus afer burrows, old mine shafts and sinkholes. They make their nests out of mud and grass and lay two to three eggs, which are incubated for about 14 days. The chicks then spend 22-26 days in the nest before fledging. Current numbers show fewer than half a dozen breeding pairs in Mpumalanga and fewer than 40 pairs in the country as a whole. It is therefore imperative that we act

to ensure the protection of these areas. In order to protect the Blue Swallow’s habitat, the Blue Swallow Natural Heritage Site, KwaZulu-Natal Mistbelt Grasslands and other areas have been declared by BirdLife South Africa as Important Bird Areas to protect the remnant populations of this attractive swallow. The Blue Swallow’s breeding range is spread across eight countries: Zimbabwe, Malawi, Swaziland, Mozambique, Zambia, southern Tanzania, south-eastern Democratic Republic of Congo and South Africa. The birds arrive in their breeding areas in early September and depart for warmer parts of Africa in early to mid-April. They spend the rest of the year in their non-breeding range spanning four countries: Kenya, Uganda, north-western Tanzania and north-eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. Recent studies suggest that the Blue Swallows we see in South Africa actually fly all the way to Uganda during the nonbreeding season. To confirm this, the EWT is planning an expedition in June 2011 to catch a few swallows in Uganda and collect feather samples. The feathers have regionally distinct stable isotope signatures, determined by the food that the bird was eating while the feather was growing. By analysing feather samples it is therefore possible for scientists to tell where the birds that are wintering in Uganda spend their summers. It is important to know where South Africa’s Blue Swallows spend their winter in order to conserve both their summer and winter habitat. A team of researchers from the EWT, FitzPatrick Institute, University of Pretoria and CSIR is also currently using cutting-edge biochemical techniques to identify connections between the Blue Swallow’s breeding and wintering grounds. This project aims to identify the specific areas in Uganda and surrounding countries used by the Critically Endangered South African population during the non-breeding season. This information will allow conservation efforts to be coordinated across the breeding range, wintering range, and routes that the swallows follow when migrating. The EWT’s Threatened Grassland Species Programme (EWT-TGSP) actively monitors the South African Blue Swallow population. It also works to recognise Blue Swallow friendly land management through a custodianship programme and more recently has begun moving towards conservation stewardship in order to secure current intact Blue Swallow habitat. Stewardship is the process whereby landowners can have their land proclaimed as a conservation area and in return receive various incentives depending on the level of agreement to which they commit. The EWT-TGSP is currently organising a workshop with representatives from all the relevant African countries to formalise an action plan regarding the conservation of this special species throughout its global range. Other EWT programmes are also involved in the conservation of migratory birds. Our Birds of Prey Programme monitors the
population of three migratory falcon species at roosts during their over-wintering period in southern Africa and our Wildlife and Energy Programme promotes the consideration of migratory routes in the placement and routing of energy infrastructure in the country. One of the myths surrounding Domestic Violence is: If abused women really wanted to leave their partners, they would. Although there are many reasons why women stay in abusive relationships, they fall into basically three categories. Emotional Reasons: Abuse has lowered or destroyed the victim’s self-esteem. The woman feels inadequate and helpless. Her energies are channelled into surviving and she has no energy to think of an escape plan. Abused women are threatened with death to themselves and their children should they attempt to leave. They fear the abuse will escalate should they leave. Research shows that violence and stalking increases dramatically once a woman leaves. Economic Reasons: Many abused women do not have access to money and fear destitution if they leave. They may be housewives who have been unemployed for many years and therefore are not presently marketable. They may have children who require fulltime care which prevents them from getting a job as there is no money to pay someone to look after the children, while she is looking for work. A lack of financial resources also makes it impossible to arrange alternative shelter. To be continued

"Efforts to find Leonard Smith, since Wednesday night, has revealed no sign of the missing man and his whereabouts and the circumstances surrounding his disappearance are unknown. "It is certain that he arrived from Johannesburg on a flight to George on Wednesday 18th May and he then drove to Plettenberg Bay in a hired car and was last heard from at around 17h30 that evening when he is believed to have gone for a walk. The hired vehicle was found in the garage of his Cutty Sark, Plettenberg Bay, home, but there has been no sign of Leonard Smith
since. A series of brand new cycling tracks is up for exploration during the inaugural Knysna Seriously Strong 200 Mountain Bike Experience on 10-12 June 2011. Some specially cleared for the 200km three-stage race, trails will take participants into the wilderness surrounding Knysna featuring sea-side cliffs, indigenous forest, plantations and even elephants. Similar in format to, but following a completely different route from, the highly acclaimed Cannondale Garden Route 300 which was presented by the same crew here in February, each stage explores a different section of the Knysna landscape finishing at the lagoon-side race village on Thesen Harbour Town. Patric Mosterd of organisers Garden Route Events said the race combined spectacular scenery much of which has never been seen by the general public. “As passionate off-road cyclists who regularly explore the region by mountain bike, we are always looking at ways to extend and improve the cycle trails available in the area. We have worked closely with the Garden Route National Park and private land owners to identify undiscovered yet suitable terrain that is not only beautiful and interesting but also poses a bit of a challenge to the cyclist. “The Knysna Seriously Strong 200 Mountain Bike Experience is not for sissies but is within reach of someone who cycles off-road for about six to seven hours a week. It’s not just a race but the kind of event in which participants can stop and enjoy the view, chat along the way and generally have a good time,” said Mosterd. Day One starts with a lap inside the Knysna Elephant Park near Plettenberg Bay passes through a private wine estate into Avontuur and Wittedrift alongside the Buffalo Hills game park. Returning to Knysna via indigenous trails, the route totals 67km. The second stage starts in Rheenendal, north-west of Knysna, and explores the newly cleared tracks of the Garden Route National Park’s latest Elephant Trail Cycle Route. Cyclists return to town via the historic Phantom Pass and alongside the newly created Knysna lagoonside walkway. Stage Three is a 59km course featuring parts of an old mountain bike favourite, the ‘red route’ at Kranshoek, east of Knysna. The single track through the Harkerville indigenous forest area leads back to town via the Bracken Falls valley and the edge of the Pezula Private Estate nature reserve. “As competitors cross the finish line, they will be treated to a complimentary glass of champagne and oysters to celebrate their accomplishment! They’ll definitely deserve it,” said co-organiser Louise Wilson. “Starting at 8am each morning, every stage ends at around lunch time at the Race Village on Thesen Island Harbour Town where a wonderful vibe rules throughout the weekend. Garden Route Events combines the talents of mountain bike enthusiasts Patric Mosterd and Louise Wilson. A born and bred Knysnarian, Patric is an accomplished trail runner and adventure racer and has cycled the trails around Knysna for more than 15 years. Based in Knysna, the pair has hosted the South African Adventure Racing Schools National Championships and are the Southern Cape representatives for the South African Adventure Racing Association. Mosterd and Wilson are veteran mountain bike stage racers who have raced and ridden socially many different stage races throughout the country. “We know and understand what cyclists like and want of such events and have created this one accordingly. So many people have come forward and told the most horrific stories. Even the case I took to Court last year, regarding the Shepherd left to die in the gorge in New Horizons, has shed light. The person who dumped her actually came and apologized and said he was instructed by his employer to take her to the gorge and tie her to a tree and leave her to die there. The children then loosened her and beat her with sticks and threw her in the water. This dog was forced to bear the most immense pain for 4 days. I cannot understand or accept why this inhumane crime against an innocent animals was thrown out of court, due to lack of evidence. These two men should have been severely punished. Our next case is on the 26th May. This is regarding the dog in Kwanokuthula which was severely burnt with boiling water - for entering an unfenced property. We have the Vet reports, the photographs, as well as the 18 year old female's confession. Surely the Courts should start taking note that
