There is definitely a lightening of the spirit in Plett as we approach the summer season after a very challenging winter… the sunshine and added vitamin D is doing its work… many locals are looking tanned and smiley now… .

There were lots of lovely celebrations for heritage day, we have super new talents in the area and high on many people’s list of excitement is that our ‘Bokke’ are doing well in the World Cup. Some stores are starting to get lovely new stock for spring and summer. Now is the time for locals to get the pick of the crop and do early gift shopping… soon we will all be busy-busy with family and work and then cannot browse at our leisure… A big welcome to our visitors. Trust you have a wonderful time sharing the beauty of Plettenberg Bay and surrounds. Have a fun filled week !

Snippets for the Week There comes a time in all our lives, when we need to make changes. After working with the Bitou CVC for the past 2 and a half years, during which time I collected in excess of 1500 female dogs and cats from the townships and had them spayed, the time has now come for me to move on with my life. I wish to thank the public for supporting my cause financially, the Vets in our area for operating at reduced costs, my friends and family for the moral support and each and everyone who stood by me. As there are just so many millions of unwanted dogs and cats throughout the world, I firmly believe that all female dogs should be sterilized. It is just so sad to see photographs of heaps of euthanized animals, paying the ultimate price - just because they were born. Please consider adoption from a Shelter before approaching a breeder. There are still about 400 females in Kwanokuthula to sterilize. I am happy to say that Nicky will now continue with this vital project and has taken over from where I left off. For this reason, the Bitou CVC Charity Shop still continues to urgently need your donations of unwanted clothing, bric-a-brac, linen, curtains and so on. This has been a joint effort and for this reason, we who have contributed in any way whatsoever, should feel really proud of ourselves - for making such a huge difference to the animal population in our small town! Lunchbox Theatre’s youth share their talents. This last week has provided numerous opportunities for over 150 primary and high school learners to perform in various disciplines in front of their parents, friends and the greater communities. The Lunchbox Theatre Young Actors’ Theatre Academy (YA’TA) showcase took place at Plett Primary on Wednesday 21st. Over 150 people attended the evening’s performances by our primary and high school groups. The kids really showed how they have grown over the last term under the tuition of Stuart Palmer and his colleague Emma Irvine. The YA’TA members’ confidence, commitment and hard work is a shining example of how these theatre classes have added valuable life skills to these kids’ lives. Lunchbox Theatre would like to send a very special thanks to Melville’s Spar, Pick ‘n Pay, Cape 300 Foundation and Plett Primary for all their help in making this a impressive evening of entertainment. Keep your ears and eyes open for our next showcase, early next year. On Friday 23rd it was the turn of the After School Activity Program Dance and Drama groups to entertain the audience at Plett Secondary. Alex Eloff from Footprints Dance Studio show-

cased the dances that his learners had been working on for the last term, with the kids enthusiastically dancing the Cha cha, Rumba, Jive and Samba. The Plett Pioneers Fieldband produced their usual magic with great dancing, percussion and wind instruments. The theatre show was received with many cheers and laughs as Lunchbox Theatre’s team of learners performed their original story. Thanks to Bitou 10 Foundation, Plett Sek, Footsteps Dance Studio, The Plett Fieldband and Lunchbox Theatre for making this wonderful evening possible. A very special thanks to Verdette Marais for her ‘Champion Spirit’. Well done to all the actors, musicians and dancers for stepping out there and showing us that these programs are really working in bringing the youth of Plett off the streets and into creative, constructive and educational programs. “Together we can do so much more”.

Women of Worth, WOW Beads Project launched at KwaNokuthula

The Women of Worth, WOW Beads Project was launched at Simunye Centre, Kwanokuthula on the 22nd of September 2011. The purpose of the launch was to inform the community about the background of the project, the role of the beads project’s stakeholders as well as to hand over certificates and donations to Women of Worth. The launch was embraced by the presence

of Old Mutual Management, the Department of Correctional Services’ Management, Correctional Service members and inmates, FAMSA Western Cape, Bitou Municipal Council and staff members, Women of Worth members and the Bitou community. The launch was opened with a short prayer and a word of God by Reverend Faleni from Correctional Services of South Africa. Rev. Faleni said God has the master key to open every door in our lives. This became clear from the journey of WOW members as most of them were former victims of abuse and now God opened their doors of financial freedom through the

Beads Project. Giving us the background of the beads project, Ms. N. Nzeleni from George Correctional Centre, said they took upon themselves to come up with the project called Ikamva, meaning the future. They approached Bitou Municipality through Sylvia Thompson who informed them about a group of women who were previously abused and are now interested in bead work training. She applauded 3 of their inmates who helped George Correctional Centre by transferring the skills of beading to Women of Worth members. Ms. Nzeleni also thanked the Southern Cape Management for supporting them in their vision of empowering women with those beading skills. Bitou Executive Mayor, Mr. Memory Booysen gave the guests the keynote address where he acknowledged the launch as the day for the abuse victims, the offenders and those who are abusive. He said, this should be an exercise whereby offenders or abusers will say, they will never abuse again and women to say, they will never allow themselves to be abused again. Well done to the following programme speakers: Mrs. Lou van der Merwe from FAMSA for enlightening the guests about their role towards Women of Worth. She also honoured all the members of the beads project for their courage to overcome their abusive circumstances. The Southern Cape Management Area Commissioner, Mrs. N.P. Booi for acknowledging that working together with the inmates and the community proves that they can do more in building better communities. The Deputy Regional Commissioner, Mr. Freddie Engelbrecht for congratulating all the partners involved in the Beading project. Last but not least, Mrs. Ellen Pakkies for sharing her story of being abused by her parents, by men she became involved with and then abused by her own son. She told the guests and the community that the stress of her lifetime of abuse slowly mounted until she reached breaking point of strangling her 20 year old son. Old Mutual Management presented 5 certificates to members of Women of Worth and to the 3 inmates who transferred skills to those women. The Department of Correctional Services handed over 3 Sewing Machines, boxes of beads and black takkies to Women of Worth. Sylvia Thompson thanked the guests, the stakeholders of the Beads Project and the community for attending the event. The launch was indeed a success as the guests were entertained with songs from the Southern Cape Choir, the Offenders’ Choir and the Opera by Simon Kika. Census Workers

With the South African Census process beginning, people are advised to be cooperative, but cautious, so as not to become a victim of fraud or identity theft. The first phase of the 2010 Census is completed where Census Workers verify the addresses of households across the country. Eventually, more than 140,000 Census workers will count every person in the South Africa (Start date 10 October) and will gather information about every person living at each address including name, age, gender, race, and other relevant data. The big question is - how do you tell the difference between a Census worker and a con artist? 1. If a Census worker knocks on your door, they will have a badge, a handheld device, a Census Bureau canvas bag, and a confidentiality notice. 2. Ask to see their identification and their badge before answering their questions. 3. However, you should never invite anyone you don't know into your home. 4. Census workers are currently only knocking on doors to verify address information. 5. Do not give your identity number, credit card or banking information to anyone, even if they claim they need it for the Census. Remember, no matter what they ask, you really only need to tell them how many people live at your address. 6. While the Census Bureau might ask for basic financial information, such as a salary range, you don’t have to answer anything at all about your financial situation.

The Census Bureau will not ask for bank account, or credit card numbers, nor will employees solicit donations. Any one asking for that information is not with the Census Bureau. Remember , the census Bureau has decided not to work with Acorn on gathering this information. No Acorn worker should approach you saying he/she is with the Census Bureau. Eventually, Census workers may contact you by telephone, mail, or in person at home. However, the Census Bureau will not contact you by Email, so be on the lookout for Email scams impersonating the Census. Never click on a link or open any attachments in an Email that are supposedly from the Census Bureau. Epic Tales of Bahia Formosa continued

Chapter II The Observed

They were a tough hardened tempered people. Almost landlocked. A wonderful mix of Homo Sapiens, Homo-Neanderthalensis, Basque, Gaul, Celt, Berber, Moor, Hellene, Phoenician, Roman and Zoroastrian persian. On three sides the seas and to the North the pyrenees wall. Four very different cultures co-existed on this quasi island: the head as it were of Evropa. Iberia served as the Eyes and Ears of this nourishing compelling nursery of human invention and ingenuity finally triumphing over the barbarism and savagery of a dark age of ideology and superstition. Paradoxical contrasts of a continent that was destined now to be re-born in an explosion of art and science and quest for knowledge and discovery. The Spanish, themselves a hybrid of Catalan, Arragonian, Moor and others, were driven to exploit wealth and riches and legends of gold for king and pope. Their neighbours the Lusitanian poruguese, gastronomically inclined to rich spicy sea food were more driven to venture and explore for spices. A difference as stark as the a sweet Port and a dry Sherry. In fact it was the Pope in Rome had had to divide the world between the two competitors. And this fateful division of the world; this first colonial act of empire which launched Europe's drive for dominance of the planet, guides this story to the Lusitanians. And it goes thus: Once upon a time, far away, there was a wise and benevolent king, such as were and are rare. For as is known to the wise, all men with honour are kings, but not all kings have honour. A king with foresight and imagination. Who was humble to be known as Prince henry. His People lovingly dubbed him the Navigator. For he was drawn to the stars like a young John Kennedy in 1960. He was drawn to the oceans like a young Jacques Cousteau at the same era. The new, last frontiers: space and the ocean were conspiratorial partners in guiding our human journey to the next level of exploration, at the dawn of the age of industry and technology. This wise prince, instead of great palaces and courts, rather built an Academy, a place of learning, where his curious people could learn the arts, yes arts, and aslo sciences of voyage. Where they could learn bravery and

foster courage. Where their enthusiasm for adventure was nurtured and guided. For Prince Henry's vision was not for the feint hearted. No real human voyage ever has been. In the Forbidden City, a young emperor son-of-heaven with the Mandate of Heaven upon him dreamt of exploring the extent of the domain granted him by the gods. His ancient civilization, already technologically mature, built one of the biggest fleets ever known. he too found an ambitious Admiral Cheng Ho, an orphaned eunuch slave, to take on the arduous task of discovering the corners of kingdoms and become one of the greatest explorers of all time. To consult the ancient surviving maps and scrolls of folklore of the peoples archives, compiled over milennia. And in the Maurya kingdom of India, Kautilya was advising King Chandra Gupta Morya to explore ocean frontier after unifying his vast lands of the Indian ‘sub’-continent. Even before these, there were voyagers from Pheonicia and Egypt that had undertaken such epic voyages. And an amazing Nordic warrior race called the vikings who travelled much of half the planet in ingenious ships. But all these were driven not only by necessity. But also by curiousity. that spark, that flame of human curiousity. To know the unknown. They were the initial pioneers of the great project that now befell there successors. All of which, unknown to them at the time, was part of a home-coming. A return to the land of the genesis of man. A return to EDEN.... It was of course Henry's vision that was one of the most well, visionary, ambitious and successful. One of his greatest Captains, Vasco da Gama, managed to find the route around the great mother continent of Africa; and return to tell the tale and share the wonders. The Age of discovery had begun thence, (and has never ended) as had the race, (like the arms or space race later), to (re-) discover the world. Eventually the Lusitanians reached one of the most ancient lands of all, India. And there they founded an out-post to consolidate and expand their marine and maritime exploits. Goa. Globalization started slowly. Like a few ripples in a big pond. But it had started. Those ripples off the proud bow waves of the prows of the Caravels and Junks began a tide of journey, of voyage, of exploration that embraces the dreams and imagination of all that is beautiful and pioneering in our people, our human race that still lap in reverberation off the rocky shores and coasts and beaches, islands and continents of our blue planet.

The search for the new, the unknown. For riches, and glory and strange new things perhaps. But mostly just because…. it was there. Free and vast. The avenue and chart for human inquisitiveness and curiousity. The drive and urge to discover new places, new spaces, new freedoms, new beginnings. New meanings. If you surf a wave today, it contains a bit of the residue of the energy of those first pioneering surfers. The Explorers. Let us never lose our human interest to find meaning in exploration. It was the Iberians, however, that were now rounding the magical southern Cabo de Boa Esperanca. It was the Iberian caravels and barques. These Portuguese boats and their explorers whre now the first from Europe to record approaching the Ponta Delgada (Dolphin Point) and the Sierra d’Estrella (Mountains of the Stars) which were the very same Mountains of the Lapping Waters; the majestic Tsi-Tsi Kamma…. And to name the place the Baia Formosa, Bay of Beauty, an exclusive name reserved by these Lusitanian salted seafarers for very few places of the known world. For only scenery of singularly scarce select spectacular splendour and the most extra-ordinary magnificence! To be continued ...

Amoeba opens at the Heath

What a super evening guests were were treated to at the Heath with the opening of Claire Regnard’s new shop Amoeba, and what a privilege it is for us to have an artist of her calibre now living and working in the area. Claire designs and manufactures laser and cnc router cut artwork and functional décor. She designs her work on Auto-cad, and has the designs laser cut out of sheet metal, wood, vinyl & Perspex. Her inspiration comes from nature. Many folk know Claire’s work best by the Juta street trees - tall free standing laser cut metal tree sculptures on walk ways in Braamfontein, Johannesburg. In addition to Claire’s products, there is a super exhibition of Charcoal Sketches by Tori Stowe – another well known artist whose work has been enjoyed and appreciated by locals and visitors to our area for many years. Tori supplies beautiful cards, wrapping and fabric to the Heath. On a visit to Plett, Tori visited the Raptor Centre and was inspired to sketch Owls. We were happy to see that the fabulous Ilovani indigenous furniture range is still a prominent feature in the shop. Another treat was the exhibition of Janet Forrest’s 100 sketches in 100days, which many of us have been following avidly on facebook. Such detail and care has gone into these special works on Birds of prey. Good news is that Janet intends to auction them online soon, so keep watching this space! Possibly because they knew that much of the evening was honouring their space, Denis’s Radical Raptors put on a spectacular show. To complete the evening guests were treated to a cheese and wine tasting of the latest award winning Bonnievale Cellar Wines by the vivacious Alida Weldon and Jade’s Café had lots of delicious fare on offer too. Do visit the Heath to see the lovely new additions to this creative and enjoyable space. For a couple of pics of the evening, see the hello plett facebook page. My Persoonlike Filosofie

Baie Dankie Kim Jones WANTED RIFLE gunsafe, preferably single 076 286 6230 HOUSE TO let long lease, 6 bedrooms, 5 en-suite, double garage, open plan lounge dining room, kitchen. Rent R8000pm. A Friend in need, is a Friend indeed.

Quite some time ago, my school’s soccer team was going on tour but one of the players didn’t have enough money to go with. A few of my friends and I overheard this and decided to put in money so he could go with. At the end of the day, all our efforts were a success as he could go with, and all thanks to us. They didn’t lose one match and made the school proud. The message here, is to give without remembering and receive without forgetting. Attention Mr Booysen Why kwanokuthula hospital is not day night hospital? In many past years Plett residents was using Knysna hospital for their patients because in our town we do not have day night hospital. I do believe nobody feels happy when his or her brother sick is far away from him or her you don’t even know she is now at the time you left the hospital doctor told you she is fine you can go back home rest after that day you receive a call that your family member past away. Is not this confusing? I thought at the time our hospital was built will make a change not be a day hospital only be day night for the sake of the community know that we will no longer drive our family members to Knysna hospital. We have a day hospital at town there was some at kwanokuthula opposite phakamisani primary school now they moved next to taxi rank what about day night hospital to our town we do not even one why? Not all of us can afford private hospital, I know I am not the only person have this kind of question the community as well have this question, I think its time for a change att Plettenberg bay day night hospital is needed at our town anything happened anytime anywhere is this means we will still continue depend to Knysna hospital for another many years? If kwanokuthula day hospital it can be day night hospital many people can get some jobs. Last jobs creation, service delivery those are the main problem at Plettenberg bay. Plett-resident. Press Release

RESPONSE TO THE DA’S LETTER ON 100 DAYS IN OFFICE

The DA lied itself to power in Bitou and the lies are now catching up with them. During the campaign for the elections a listener asked Helen Zille why the DA made a lot of noise about corruption in the City of Cape Town prior to the 2000 elections while by 2011 no one was ever convicted of it. Zille sarcastically responded by saying that she was asking herself the same question. By inference she blamed a hidden hand in the judicial system that protects alleged ANC thieves. That was DA at its best. The same thing is playing itself out in Bitou right now. Since 2005, the DA told whoever wanted to listen that Bitou municipality was run by a cartel of corrupt ANC politicians and officials and that the municipality was bankrupt. On the other hand when the ANC was re-elected to govern in April 2006, we committed to clean audit by the third year. That was achieved in the second year. The DA then changed tag, and started claiming that the ANC administration lied to the Auditor General. The DA was publicly challenged to submit that hidden information to the Auditor General. That was never done. However they never stopped to make the allegations. These allegations set the DA campaign in motion. It unleashed a campaign full of lies and decorated with deceit. This included “Operation Kwanokuthula” which was launched in 2006 and reached its peak in 2007. We also know that that project, led by one prominent DA leader, resulted in the violence that engulfed Kwanokuthula in 2007. Fast forward to 2011. While the DA didn’t take outright majority, the party campaigned on the promise that it was going to run clean government and deliver services to all. This was said despite all people with clean conscious knew that the ANC delivered equitable service of high standard to all the residents of Bitou. Every year, we built new houses; we tarred streets in all townships. We improved access to electricity to every resident of this town. We improved the quality of drinking water. We maintained and improved infrastructure in the CBD and suburbs. Nobody with clean conscious can raise their hand and say that we never did any of these things. So, majority of the people who voted the DA did so because the party had promised that it was going to correct large scale corruption that was allegedly sanctioned by the ANC in Bitou. Logically, no honest person can claim corruption without having something in hand to prove that allegation. The DA has been claiming corruption long before they came into power. They shouldn’t be making excuses. They must just produce that large scale corruption. The many long winded letters under the Mayor’s name are an indication that reality has hit home for the DA in Bitou; lies have no stamina. Unfortunately they want to shift the blame to others. The DA promised to run the town for all its citizens. And the citizens include those who hold a different political view. But what we are currently witnessing at the municipality is nothing but pure intimidation of those who do not support the party’s political agenda.

This was the strategy used by apartheid rulers. It was defeated then, it will be defeated now. The DA is intimidating and harassing officials known to be supporters of the ANC. No chance was given to them to prove their professionalism. From day one, the party declared war on them though on the other hand it expected those officials to cooperate with them. Maybe the DA must be advised that people who gather honey don’t kick beehives. Never before in the history of Bitou have officials work under such stressful conditions. Laptops are taken away to be searched for any information that could have been leaked to outsiders. This is done by the party that has been telling all and sundry that whistle blowers must be protected. If they are not afraid of anything, why do they confiscate laptops of officials who are believed not to be supportive of illinformed and somewhat illegal decision the DA has been taking since they came into power? Why don’t the DA tell the community that it reversed an in principle decision taken by the ANC that approval for development in Ladywood be implemented n phases in order to protect the interest of businesses in the CBD? Did the DA tell business people that they approved a development that would lead to the CBD closing down? If that decision was taken by the ANC, there would be inferred accusations that corruption was at the heart of everything. That decision would have been circulated to every business owner in the CBD and court action initiated by those affected. The deafening silence of that

accompanied the decision is not only baffling but shows double standards. One wonders how many articles would have been in newspapers if an ANC councillor’s girlfriend was working as his personal assistant. And that girlfriend having access and using municipal telephone, emails, giving ‘official’ instructions etc. without being procedurally appointed. But because this is done by the DA nobody must say anything against that practise, lest they be reminded that they have a darker skin colour. If the story about Dimension Data is true, then we are going to advise one of the poorest rural municipalities under the ANC rule to ask similar assistance and we hope that they will get it or the company must accept that they aligned to the DA against the ANC and they would be treated as such. The DA has been telling whoever cares to listen that Bitou municipality is bankrupt. The CFO issued a statement refuting that claim. What now? Is he going to be hunted down like a deadly treacherous snake on the loose? When is he going to be suspended? How soon should he expect his office to be raided and the laptops confiscated? What we are seeing at the municipality is a return to the total onslaught similar to the heydays of repressions, killings and intimidations when the two senior DA councillors in Bitou were covert operatives sworn to defend apartheid at all costs. The only difference now is that it’s done under the guise of defending democracy. Putco Mapitiza ANC Regional Secretary South Cape/Klein Karoo

AT MARKET SQUARE Letter via the Editor Pitbull Fighting

Because people prefer to remain silent, fearing for their lives, the criminals continue to fight their Pitbulls for financial gain. Last Friday night at 21h00, a group of young men with six Pitbulls, were seen entering an isolated area near Ladywood. After a Saturday afternoon fight near Pinetrees in New Horizons, the winning dog's owner collected his cash, headed for the nearest shabeen, bought a case of beer and went home. It is so heartbreaking to know what pain and torture these suffering and abused animals have to endure and yet, we cannot put a stop to this most inhumane act against innocent animals. The law states that you need to obtain a licence to breed with your dog. Why is this law not being enforced? Surely the Police should put a stop to this - seeing that Law Enforcement has now been disarmed. There are five Pitbull breeders currently breeding and selling their puppies in New Horizons alone. Please note that the hearing for those arrested earlier in the year in Plettenberg Bay for dog fighting, will be held in the Knysna Magistrate's Courts on the 6th October at 9h00. Hopefully no mercy will be shown and justice will be done. An Animal Activist who now wishes to remain anonymous. AQUARIUM FOR sale discuss fish etc. 071 158 6323

This is a quote that almost everyone can agree upon and it cannot be clearer than in a school such as Wittedrift High School. Every day learners are encouraged to be their ultimate best whether it is in the classrooms or on the sports field. The amount of encouragement that exists in this school is too great to be expressed in words, from the inspirational words of wisdom told to us every morning by our headmaster, the Top Ten Breakfast that rewards learners for their academic excellence to the encouragement on the sports field to practice hard and even when they fail, are still encouraged not to give up. Encouragement is something that should exist everywhere and not only in schools because without encouragement, we feel alone in our efforts. Life can be challenging and it is a great help to have caring people around us to encourage us and drive us forward. Many people in our community are experiencing difficult times and the least we

can do is encourage them. “A word of encouragement during a failure is worth more than an hour of praise after success.” Written by Kalli Hards, a Wittedrift Learner. Judge Siraj Desai found the two guilty of murdering Plettenberg Bay smallholders Willie and Julie le Roux. He also sentenced them to another 15 years for robbery with aggravating circumstances. Ngabon was also sentenced to another 12 months' imprisonment for illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition. Third accused Bongani Mateyise (25) earlier pleaded guilty and was sentenced to one term of life imprisonment for the crimes. Desai said the heinousness of the crimes presented him with compelling reason to impose maximum sentences on the two murderers. 'The brutality of your conduct and your participation in such gratuitous violence leaves me no choice,' he is reported to have said. Bitou Business Buzz

'TOUCH THE SKY'...is the title of one of my wild life films which leads me to report on the latest information regarding the airport. Council has received the evaluation report for the long term lease of the Plettenberg Bay airport compiled by Jon Heeger & Associates, Aviation and Development Consultants. Starting with the first question 'Does Plettenberg Bay need an Airport? in their reply they indicate the availability of a full range of aviation services at ACSA airports such as Port Elizabeth and George implies that Plett. does not 'need' an airport in the strict sense. However various studies of the aviation industry have shown that where the nearest airport is more than two hours of driving time from a regional market - especially a tourism driven market - there is a compelling case to be made for a sub-regional airport at that centre. SA has many examples of such facilities including Margate, Wonderboom, Pietermaritzburg, Phalaborwa, Nelspruit and others. The following question 'What is an appropriate Scale for the Plettenberg Bay airport? Generally the ICAO classification of subregional airports is 3B or 3C, meaning that they can comfortably handle smaller aircraft types of up to 25-30 tones and at maximum 100 passengers. The terminal infrastructure required is smaller and simpler. The report further indicates that the financial viability of such an undertaking is not assured but that the socio-economic benefit to the Bitou region is considerable.

International tourists would include Plettenberg Bay in their itinerary. Domestic business visitors no longer have to commute from PE or George and temporary residents (owner of vacation homes) would visit more frequently and stay longer etc. The recommendation of the Acting Municipal Manager was that Indiza Airport Management and Virtual Consulting Engineers/ Delta Facilities Management Consortium be shortlisted to proceed to stage 2 of the bidding process and that a committee, consisting of specialists, be appointed by the Executive Mayor to formulate a detailed set of requirements. A specialist legal advisor be appointed in order to ensure compliance with the ruling legislation. Greetings, Ald. Pierre Koep SEP AND Oct all Quantec Scans only R250! Habakkuk 3:17-18 [MKJV] “Though the fig tree shall not blossom and fruit is not on the vines; the olive fails and the fields yield no food; the flock is cut off from the fold and no herd is in the stalls; yet I will rejoice in Jehovah; I will joy in the God of my salvation.” There are two small, but very significant words in these passages that have caught my attention, the words: “though” and “yet”. Habakkuk, the prophet, lived in a time when the nation of Israel was invaded by the Babylonians, and the country was devastated and the people suffered greatly. The prophet, being a man of faith and hope, sees all this and says: Although all these terrible things are happening and although we see this devastation, yet – in spite of this will I rejoice in God who is my salvation. It is his unwavering trust in an almighty God that gives him hope and strength to face these things. Almost everyone will agree that the days we live in are likewise not easy and are filled with turmoil and evil. Consequently many people, including Christians, are experiencing difficult times with adversity and affliction. We, too, need to get our eyes off the circumstances and focus on the One who controls the circumstances. Like in the case of Israel the Lord will often allow such events and trials in our lives that we find difficult to deal with. However, believers in Christ can

come through these circumstances and be victorious because of the promise of God’s own strength and life in them. Habakkuk 3:19 affirms this with these words: “The Lord God is my strength and He will make my feet like hinds’ feet and He will make me to walk upon mine high places.” Are you facing adversity today? Are you despairing and without hope? Look up towards God and place your trust in Him and praise Him for His love, His unmerited grace and mercy, His faithfulness and for His goodness. To Greenwood School & Susan Donald It was with great excitement that we heard the news that Greenwood had reached the semifinals (for the 2nd year in a row) of the ETA Awards,a national competition sponsored by Eskom & the Department of Energy rewarding businesses, institutions, individuals and schools for innovative ideas in the more efficient use of energy. After intensive preparation our children had the opportunity to present their work to our Mayor, the Honorable Memory Booysen, who received their findings and recommendations with interest and high praise. Thereafter they flew to Johannesburg to attend the semi-finals and present their project to the judges. Thank you Greenwood and Susan Donald, for supporting these 4 children and giving them the opportunity to shine, and shine they certainly did. Sue Bröhm, Debbie Young and Hilda Bam

The very word often congers up feelings of fear and hatred, but sharks aren’t to be feared or hated. Sharks are vital to healthy oceans and healthy oceans are vital for healthy people. Without sharks the oceans fall apart, sadly sharks are being hunted at an alarming rate. It has been estimated that shark populations have declined as much as 90%. Some people may say good. Who needs sharks? Well I’ll tell you this everyone needs sharks. In parts of the ocean where the shark population has decreased the fishing industry has virtually collapsed. Sharks are apex predators that weed out the sick and the weak, preventing disease outbreak among the species they hunt. Without them the species they hunt would grow to populous and over hunt their prey, many of which are fish people like to eat. The ocean depends on sharks and people depend of the ocean. Prayer Walk against Drugs

ITS SUMMER TIME!-!!!! and what a better way to spend our Friday evenings, then walking the streets of New Horizons again. The winter is gone and now we have no more reasons and excuses on why we cant join in. It is amazing how crime in our lovely town has increased, and very alarming is also how many "new" faces are dwelling our streets. It is as if the devil has just open the gates of hell and commanded every demon to come and destroy our childrens lifes, our homes, our marriages, our relationships, our finances.....EVERYTHING!!!!! I believe that prayer changes things, it is the only solution I know and have known all my life. I will be starting the prayerwalks again this comming Friday. We will depart from new Horizons Taxi Rank, on Friday 30 Sept @ 19h30. All I'm asking community of New horizons , is 30minutes of your time, every friday evening...only 30 minutes out of a whole week. That can save a life!!!!! Chrystal Smith 0798786493. Letter via the Editor TULIPS FROM AMSTERDAM Junior Primary concert - what a joy! My angel, neck-scarved and determined, was a serious little dutch boy in spring, waltzing and concentrating and not without a large stage presence. All this to be digitally captured by Steve D’Elboux, and the pictures eagerly awaited. I borrowed Mrs Van Schie’s readers on the day of photo selection, as the thumbnails were quite small. I picked 4 beautiful shots and felt gratified to have spotted him in one of the crowd shots taken during “We are the world”. Aaah, goosebumps…. Well, the pics arrived, and out of the 4, I had managed to pick only ONE with him actually in it! The point of my story …. Fantastic service from Steve of PixbySteve who on hearing about this, phoned me, made a trip to my office, and let me select again off his flashstick. What amazing service, thank you so much Steve! Exceptional men’s field to run The Otter Rarely are there more than a handful of trail runners at any one event with the ability to take line honours. To put this into perspective, most events are a bit like a 100-metre final with Usain Bolt running against seven runners who didn’t qualify for the final. Now, for the first time, a local race will have 10 men with the ability to win the race, at the start. All eyes will be on these runners and the 4:48:53 race record when The Otter African Trail Run presented by Hi-Tec starts on 30 September. This 42-kilometre trail run traverses the Otter Hiking Trail, a popular five-day hike within the Tsitsikamma section of the Garden Route National Park. The Otter Run was first held three years ago and Iain Don-Wauchope broke the mythical five-hour barrier to win the race in 4hrs 59mins. Last year the race record dropped when John Collins ran 4:56:43. Collins’ reign as ‘Otter King’ was short lived. 24hours later Andre Gie, taking part in the Southern Storm Duathlon, which began with the running of The Otter, set a new record of 4:48:53 when he finished only 12-seconds ahead of Don-Wauchope. Collins and Gie will be under pressure this year, surrounded by a half-dozen runners just as strong, fast and experienced – each with recent wins in credible trail races. They’ll be up against Rohan Kennedy, who won this year’s African X; Mark Preen comes off a win at the Hout Bay Trail Run; Jacques Mouton won the Outeniqua Traverse and Nic de Beer won the 80km PUFfeR. Bruce Arnett has the most distance experience in his legs with endurance honed from experience. Plett local, Victor Gugushi is the lightest of the runners with a speedy road background. If he takes care of himself and paces his race, he could be in contention. Greg Goodall is the dark horse of this

race. A dedicated runner, his training has been specific and focused on The Otter, which may be the right formula to get him through the course ahead of the rest. Unfortunately Don-Wauchope won’t be running this year; he’s out with an injury. For the first time, Ryan Sandes, who has become the face of trail running in the media, comes to run The Otter. With Sandes in the picture, all eyes will be on him to challenge the record. In only three years he has become a high-profile trail runner on the international stage. His performances continue to strengthen as he transforms from a multi-day desert staged race runner to an exceptional ultra runner and his recent win at the celebrated Leadville 100-mile race in Colorado, USA, stands as proof of this evolution. The Otter will certainly be Sandes’ most competitive local race with its gathering of exceptional runners. “What a field!,” says race director Mark Collins. “The R5,000 reward, offered to runners breaking 4h30, by presenting sponsor Hi-Tec is certain to go to one of these guys. They all have speed, strength and the experience to really excel on this technical route and they’ll push from the start. In good conditions, with so many competitive runners upfront challenging each other, serious damage could be done to the current record making it far more difficult to better in coming years.” The 42-kilometre stretch of undulating Garden Route coastline is no walk in the park. Participants run above plunging sea cliffs and negotiate rock-strewn trails, sandy beaches, treacherous tree roots, gruelling climbs and at least three river crossings. The Otter - African Trail Run presented by Hi-Tec takes place on Friday, 30 September 2011. The event can be followed through www.theotter.co.za. Apology

Bitou Arts & Culture Society together with Simunye Centre, would like to apologise to the communities of Plettenberg Bay, for the late cancellation of Heritage Day Event at Piesang Community Hall on the 24th September 2011. We would also like to apologise to our main guest speakers, such as the “Griekwa Chief, Xhosa Traditional speaker, Mayor, Councillors, The Media, business owners, Spar, Robberg Fisheries, Lucky Store, Meat Place, Peter Wilson, Spur, Den Ron, Plett Building Supples, Penny Pinchers, Shoprite, The Print Shop, Art & Cultural Groups, The community of Crags.” The reason for our cancellation is because Friday evening, the organizers of the event received bad news that The Simunye Management Committee, Plett Tourism and Dept of Cultural Affairs and Sport are pulling out of the event and won’t be able to fund transport, to transport communities from different wards to Piesang Hall and back, and that was very sad to our organization and the communities of Plettenberg Bay and we need to do damage control by night, informing invitees about the cancellation of the event, let alone the money that we wasted in terms of organizing a national event, it was a blow in our faces, and it was already late to look for an alternative donor, the only thing that was left was to do damage control and act fast. It hurt me to see the community of Crags who prepared for the event were so much disappointed and the kids were crying, We also believe that there was a political influence in this

Pure Werner 082 940 2895 pureH20@mweb.co.za • Garden Design • Grey Water Systems whole scenario, but it doesn't matter we are artists, and we are creative people and we have power and we will use our power and creativity to bounce back, big time, with another event as soon as possible. I would also like to advice NGO’s and Municipality Directors to work hand in hand with municipality Local government, because what we have discovered as society is that top management are scared as hell to sign and authorise mentos and that leads to lack of service delivery and that makes me wonder “why?” I don't mean you must join DA, and I don't think its a bad idea either. NGO’s must learn to co-operate with the current goverment, this is Western Cape and each and every hole have a lid, and if that hole is closed, mark my words my brother “You will kiss your pretty good looking project Good Bye!” and your beneficiaries will be affected big time. Ask Youth Future Data and CDC for a pretty example. God Bless You!
