Grade 7 Farewell Speech-2010 I greet you all in the name of Jesus Christ.

First of all I want to express, I know on behalf of all of us,our appreciation to Ms G.S. Sethose and Mayor for coming from a far distance to help us tonight. I wish we could all just applause them.

We observe tonight not only a celebration of Grade 7 but a victory of school, but let us begin and remember that a farewell is not a sign of of weakness and boasting but it shows strength, teamwork, hope, faith and build future life of children. We would like to thank the grade 7 teachers, staff and SMT for their enthusiasm and willingness to organize the grade 7 farewell. Their hard work certainly paid off. It is a very successful evening.

Grade 7 learners, we say goodbye to you.

Educators have done everything to mould you as good citizens of this wonderful country. I think you are ready for new challenges of Grade 8 and the world and mostly, thanks for all the Grade 7 learners for being so well behaved and polite, and joining in so enthusiastically. Co-incidence or link to Rainmaker ?

Mr Cohen of Planier Street popped in to tell us of his experiences with Mr Water - Theo Terblanche, his Rainwater tank and Rain.

About 3months ago when the drought and water restrictions were bad, Mr Cohen got a 22 000litre tank installed.

He then called Theo to fill the tank, which he did. Within 48 hours, the rain came!

10 days ago the tank was empty and Theo was called in again. He filled the tank and you guessed it…. Not even 48hours later, the rains came.

We think Theo may have a direct link to the Rainmaker. He gets his water delivered and paid for and then the rain comes…. We would like to know his secret….

Why are the Teats on some mammals between their front legs, when those of most animals are between their back legs?

Besides human and primates, there are three other mammals that have their teats between their front legs: elephants, sea cows and hyraxes. The vagina opening of the elephant`s mother isn`t below the base of the tail, but between her back legs. As a result there is no more space for the teats between the front legs. In the course of the evolution of the teats have shifted forward between the front of the legs.

It is also said that nursing closer to the face and trunk, allows the mother to have a closer bond.

Even though their completely different sizes, external appearance and different habits, sea cows and hyraxes are the closet relatives of the elephant. The sea cows have two teats under their flippers in front.

The hyrax has two nipples between her shoulders and four between her back legs.

I would just like to warn the Public there are going to be Roadblocks on New Year’s Eve and New Year`s Day specifically targeting Drunk Drivers. My advice is to Either have a designated driver or use a Taxi.

DON`T START THE NEW YEAR IN JAIL. I will say we had over the last weekend a car broken into In Tino Cres and Burglary at Blue hills Bird farm.

We have had a lot of small car accidents seven just on the 26th of December , 2010 so please be careful out there.

Sky Lantern Spectacular for Plett at New Year

Our Executive Mayor Lulama Mvimbi (on behalf of the Bitou Municipality) and Di Butlin as chairperson of PAWS are “endorsing and promoting” a campaign for our residents and visitors to purchase and participate in the release of “eco and pet” friendly Sky Lanterns.

It enables the Plett community to have fun whilst being responsible and caring for our environment and pets.

At MIDNIGHT on New Year everyone will be able to participate in the Lantern Spectacle by releasing their own Sky Lanterns with personalised messages and wishes over 300m into the night sky! The “BIG LIFT OFF” will happen mainly along our beaches from Robberg to Keurbooms and the open areas on the lagoon and wherever New Year is being celebrated in a safe and open area.

Sky Lanterns are new to South Africa and notably were used at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg for the IPL Final. The Sky Lanterns being promoted and distributed in the campaign are all sourced from the UK and have passed the stringent regulatory requirements adopted in that country.

A Year in which History was Made.

Unfortunately as everything has its end the time for our team to exist from the tournament came and the tournament also come to an end after the final game between Spain that were pronounced champions against Netherlands.

South Africa`s world cup was defined as one of the most successful world cups in its history with the magic noise of the Vuvuzela`s that were seen for the first time in the soccer games although some teams complain of its usage by supporters saying the unbarring noise disturbed their teams concentration.

Also in Plett many things that always part of 2010 history had occurs such as deputy president visit to launch a war on poverty campaign, IDT, DTI was also here and many people had received RDP houses to have proper shelter for the very first time in their lifetime, that will be history that will never be erased in their minds.

Like every year 2010 had come to an end some had plans for this year as some of this plans had been achieved some not but there is still another year that is coming for those who had failed to achieve what they mean to do, to go back and look where they wrong and improve and those with achievement it time to take the next challenge as it will never be enough in life you grow each day and learn new things everyday.

Letter via the Editor Ban Bad Dog Owners On 26th December we went onto Solar beach for a walk.

There were a number of responsible dog owners who had and used poo bags , so they and their owners were a pleasure to share the beach with .

Then the owner of 2 husky dogs watched his one dog poo and did absolutely nothing about it. This dog owner should be banned.

He and his dogs should not be allowed onto any beach. It is folk like him who give all dogs a bad reputation and have necessitated the stricter enforcement of the bylaws regarding dogs on beaches.

Perhaps a photo of folk who do not do the necessary should be posted at the entrance to beaches and they should be banned….

A Thought for the Week.

1John 2:15-17 [MKJV] "Do not love the world, nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him, because all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passes away, and the lust of it, but he who does the will of God abides forever."

The end of 2010 has come and once again we stand on the threshold of a brand new year. We don't know what the future

holds for us, but we do know Who holds the future.

In the verses quoted above, John, the Apostle, in his first Epistle, admonishes the believers of his time and points out three important issues that are still relevant to us in this day and age and well worth considering now that we are about to enter 2011.

The first thing John states is that if we are truly right with God and love Him with all our heart and mind and soul, we ought to have the right perspective of life and love Him first and foremost and not love the world and the things thereof.

As Christians we actually have to live our lives as being crucified and dead to this world and the things therein and the priority and focus of our love should be on none other than God - this is only possible by allowing Christ to live His life in us on a daily basis.

Paul, writing to the Galatians, made this plain when he wrote: "I have been crucified with Christ, and I live, yet no longer I, but Christ lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh, I live by faith toward the Son of God who loved me and gave Himself on my behalf." [Gal:2:20] The words faith toward the Son of God are better translated "the faith of the Son of God".

The second thing John emphasises is the fact that the things that the world has to

offer, "...the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life..." are often directly either in opposition to God or can detract from a godly lifestyle as they serve mostly ourselves, in stead of the Creator.

Finally, John points out a very important issue namely that this world and all that is in it will not last permanently and will eventually pass away - one day this earth, as we know it, will be destroyed and will be no more.

Everything we presently see and enjoy, but also all that is evil and wrong is only temporary and will not last forever.

But, John says, "...he who does the will of God abides forever", as the things of God are eternal and will remain.

Only fools, those who are wise in their own eyes, will enter the new year trusting in their own strength and abilities and will pin their hopes upon the things of this world - truly wise people, however, realise that they are absolutely dependent upon God and His grace and they will place their trust and hope in Jesus Christ.

Letter via the Editor I'd like to add to all this harassment all us responsible local dog owners are getting, just because a very few are being petty about a bit of poo & preventing our beloved dogs from being able to have just a bit of freedom in this huge paradise.

Although I strongly condone all dog owners being responsible & picking up after their four legged loved ones, I have to find it totally rediculous how people can complain so much about something which is totally natural and disappears in a day or so, yet they (including authorities) have no problem overlooking the human waste left behind, such as plastics, glass bottles, used condoms, cigarettes buts, etc ... , which DO NOT disappear within a few days and is harmful to the environment, as well as an eye-sour to many who appreciate this beautiful natural paradise. (some pics attached as evidence from 1 single stroll along Keurbooms beach just over a week ago).

Then we are told that our dogs must in places where they are allowed, to be leashed!

Our beloved dogs want to run free. I want them to be able to get a chance in this human over populated world to run free.

Why out of all the so many places there are for holiday makers to enjoy there holiday , is there not ONE place allocated for where local people of the Bitou community are allowed to walk there dogs freely.

I have in the last few weeks daily walked my dogs unleashed on the lagoon. Honestly, the

majority of visitors enjoying the natural beauty on the lagoon have greeting my dogs with smiles and loving attention.

It must be just a very very few that have a problem with dogs unleashed.

Why are we letting a tiny minority dictate to what the majority don't have a problem with.

I have had such a bad few experiences with the local authorities here in Plett since I got here regarding their unfriendly attitude towards dogs, that I'm wanting to leave.

I came here thinking Plett was a natures paradise and where an animal lover would feel at home ... Thanks to a few individuals, it isn't so.

Paws Report Back

In response to the Letter via the Editor published in the “What’s New in Plett” dated 9th December, 2010, PAWS takes this opportunity of reporting back to the public on the facts regarding the building of the Animal Clinic in the Bitou area. All this information has been available for scrutiny by our supporters and the general public either at the PAWS monthly meetings or at our Annual General Meeting which was held on 1st September, 2010.

In 2002, the Bitou Municipality gave us permission to use a piece of land close to the sewage works as their pound was already situated there. For various reasons, this proved to be unsuitable mainly because plans for building our clinic which were submitted to Council were rejected because of complaints from adjoining property owners regarding noise, etc., coupled with the fact that the Municipality refused permission on the grounds that problems would arise should there be a chlorine gas leak from the sewage plant. Our caravan and temporary buildings were also vandalised on an ongoing basis (the caravan was stripped and sold for scrap by local youngsters!), and animals removed from the Municipal pound by owners who harassed our Inspector continually even though the pound was controlled by the

Municipality.

Since then we have been trying to obtain a property from elsewhere. We have viewed numerous properties, but they have all been unsuitable because of their distance from the centre of Bitou. The writer of the Letter via the Editor was quite correct in saying that the location of the Animal Clinic should be in the vicinity of New Horizons and Kwano and this is our aim.

In 2009, the Municipality finally agreed to lease us a piece of land next to the reservoirs at Ebenezer. PAWS held a blessing service for the land and then started digging the foundations for the Clinic. During the digging phase we discovered that the water pipes serving Kwano and New Horizons ran through this land and we had to suspend the entire operation. We still lease this land from the Municipality and will use it to exercise the animals when the Clinic is finally built.

Hopefully, as we have put in an offer for the adjoining piece of land to the owner, we can look forward to finally erecting our long-awaited Clinic in the very near future.

This property will have to go through the rezoning and subdivision process which normally takes years, but the Municipal lawyers have assured us that they will expedite this procedure as quickly as possible and have suggested that we go ahead and start the building of the Clinic. A committee has been set up to do the preliminary work – finalisation of plans, putting up a billboard by SANRAL (Roads), finalisation of the deal with the landowner, etc. We hope this will all be

done before the end of January 2011 and we can finally go ahead.

BITOU MUNICIPALITY NOTICE 214/2010 FALLACY “PERMANENT CLOSURE OF CENTRAL LIBRARY” Recently rumours have been circulating that the Bitou Municipality has taken a decision to close down the library in town and to incorporate same into the about to be constructed new New Horizons library.

It is claimed that there has been no consultation in this regard. Allegations are also made that no consideration was made by the municipality to inform the public about the imminent demolishing and temporary closure of the present New Horizons library.

FACT “TO BE THE BEST TOGETHER” One of Bitou Municipality’s prime objectives in terms of its Integrated Development Plan is to integrate and “build bridges” between communities, especially attempting to mend past disintegration of citizens based on skin colour. To this effect the municipality, after years of extensive consultation and intensive planning, adopted the “Coming Together” initiative. The construction of the library and new law courts on Erven 2240 and 2459 Plettenberg Bay is part of this revolutionary model plan. We are therefore disappointed and concerned to find that our efforts are not supported and appreciated by some, especially those who spread malicious and unfounded rumours about this initiative.

The allegation that the library in town is going to be closed down has no basis officially because the Council has not taken any such decision. Bitou municipality abides by democratic principles and any resolution in this regard will be informed by a consultative process taking into account various factors including demand and viability. The intention is to embark on this process early in the new year where after all inputs and options will be considered.

What is definite though is the fact that as a direct result of the construction of the library in New Horizons, and should the decision after consultation be that the town library remains operational, it will lose its status of being the Central/Main library and become a branch library like those in Kurland, Kranshoek, etc. Alternative measures to ensure that users do have access to library services whilst the New Horizons library is temporary closed have been considered. Should any person require more details with regard to this project, please feel free to approach the municipality in order to obtain factual information.

With regard to the remarks attributed to certain executive members of the Western Cape Legislature in the media, cognisance should be taken that the stated Intergovernmental Relations Framework Act prescribes communication procedures between spheres of government. The Bitou Municipality subscribes to the stipulations of the latter legislation and hence refrains from engaging with other spheres through the media.

Sharks Delay Sabrina Love Ocean Challenge

The 2010 Sabrina Love Ocean Challenge brought to you by Stonehage and Discovery now into its seventh year - not only broke all attendance records with more than 2600 athletes participating in any of the 7 sporting events, but was also the first time that the 6 km Ocean Swim was delayed by the appearance of 3 Great White Sharks in the Bay. The inaugural swim in 2004 attracted 13 brave souls who had only their wits to rely on. Seven years on and the field has grown to 200 who take on the challenge of swimming across the bay from Robberg Corner to Central Beach and safety measures introduced by premier Knysna based events company Magnetic South ensured that every possible eventuality WHAT'S NEW IN PLETT – 30 DECEMBER 2010

had been considered. With the Discovery Medicopter operated by ER24 acting as an eye in the sky and staffed by the highly professional NSRI Plett volunteers plus a highly skilled kayaking team sub contracted by the organizers from the local canoe clubs all made it possible to pick up the arrival of a number of three meter Great White Sharks on the swim route. It took a number of air reconnaissance flights and the introduction of two shark pods that eventually persuaded these majestic creatures to move off an hour after the scheduled start and allow the swim to pass by without incident.

“It was certainly dramatic to have this build up to the start of such a challenge and considering that over half the field comprised of swimmers who had not done this particular event before it was amazing to see the determination in everyone to take part irrespective of the fact that their adrenaline levels had been given a supercharge. I have absolute respect for all who have this intense drive and passion to accomplish such a feat’ commented Chris Crewdson of Magnetic South.

The 6 km Ocean Swim was won by Olympian Chad Ho in 1.00.11 in the Men with Natalie Du Toit taking the Women title in 1.00.35.

The 10 km Run, 15 km Surfski, Beach Walk and Kids Of Steel all attracted huge crowds on the first day with Central Beach a sea of pink with a beautiful sunny day to round it all off.

Day Two was the complete opposite with rain and a change of scenery as the venue moved from beach to the lush Cape Nature Reserve on the Keurbooms River. Natalie Du Toit and Chad Ho achieving another double by taking both the podium in the 1 Mile Swim however it was disabled athlete John Marriner who stole the show when he was the last to leave the water and had only the use of his arms to achieve this amazing challenge. He was a true tribute to what the Sabrina Love Ocean Challenge event is all about and that is to assist kids with special needs. The one portfolio not highlighted is the all important security aspect. It is high however on the priority list of the Chamber and all members are involved in trying to find solutions to bring the level of criminality down. Albergo for Backpackers - the oldest backpackers in Plettenberg Bay has just qualified for FTTSA certification. Albergo is the one stop shop for adventure activities on the Garden Route and offers affordable and comfortable accommodation from camping spots to private en-suite rooms.

The FTTSA certification process examines social, economic and environmental best practise in tourism businesses – seeking a balance of all three principles of sustainable development.

FTTSA certification is offered on a voluntary basis to providers of tourist accommodation, activities, attractions and volunteer programmes in South Africa. This cost effective quality management system addresses no fewer than thirteen operational areas in a tourism business.

FTTSA looks for evidence that a tourism business is committed to uplifting historically disadvantaged individuals (HDIs) in line with South Africa’s Employment Equity Act. Albergo provides equal opportunities in the workplace and makes significant efforts towards affirming HDIs as 86% of the employees are women.

In addition, black women are well represented within the workforce and Albergo provides good employment of local residents.

One of FTTSA’s key principles is Respect for Environment, which can be measured in relation to planning, operational management and investment in conservation activities. Albergo demonstrates an intensive effort in all of these areas, particularly through its offset of its carbon 2 footprint having been approved Carbon Neutral for 2009/2010 by "Planet Green Ocean Blue1". cycle. The overall impact on this water-stressed part of the Garden Route is substantial! FTTSA investigates whether a business is using procurement as a developmental tool e.g. buying as much as possible locally and referring guests to other local businesses (to maximize local economic impact). Albergo invests in the surrounding area by buying local goods and supports a local enterprise called Bright Ideas Tours and Transfers who does their transfers.

Albergo also encourages their guests to eat at local restaurants as apposed to offering meals in-house, thereby spreading the benefits of tourism to other small businesses.

In terms of Community Social Investment (CSI), FTTSA investigates types and amounts of investment and guest involvement in CSI. Albergo currently sponsors two children through the "Sponsor a Child" organisation to attend school at Siyakhula Pre–School in Qolweni.

This includes paying for their fees, school materials, uniforms, transfers and fees for the activities and meals. They also encourage their guests to donate towards the local Masizame Children's Shelter, providing relevant information on

Albergo’s website and in the reception area.

House of Hope end of year party

House of hope, Kranshoek had a wonderful end of year party on Thursday 23rd December 2010. It was opened by the Elder Pieter Nell. Almost all of the poor children in the Kranshoek vicinity were there. From North and South, East and West, definitely rich and poor, all of them under the Bitou Flag. What a pretty face to see, happy children. Definitely a jolly day for the Underprivileged children of Kranshoek.

They had lots and lots to eat. They were running around, dancing to the music playing by Justin Timberlake? No, it was played by our own Justin Barnardo, the son of auntie Frieda at The Print Shop.

The lucky children were filmed by Zano the grandson of auntie Poppie ( Maria Luiters). Close knitted huh? Together we can do it! The children had their three course meal. Wow cookies and cool drinks for starters, main course and their ice cream plus a party packet. Fantasmagories, they said! I don`t know who enjoyed the entertaining more, Santa Clause or the children. He was fantastic, he did a good job. So were the ladies in the kitchen.
