Its been so super having the upcountry visitors sharing our area. Its been a busy week. Our youngsters have a 10 day break from Friday 1st April. The Harley-Davidson 2011 Two passes rally bought some super bikes and great people to the area. Well done to the Dunes for hosting them and blessing Plett. The Plett Primary Food Festival was once again a delicious annual function of note! A real Plett occasion. The NG Summer Bazaar was a lot of fun. Delicious food, crafts and great company. So super to see the talented Riel Dancers strut their stuff. Earth Hour saved 350MW this year. Thank you to all who contributed... Well done to the Beacon Island who are a true beacon for environmental awareness. The Rondebosch Boys Concert Band were a real treat. What amazing talent shared with such panache. This week brings many more opportunities for Pure Plett Pleasure. Have a fabulous week in our beautiful Bay.

JOYfully Uplifting Community
Looking around these days, one can see the high statistics of stress and depression. Few people seem to be laughing or smiling and the majority seem so caught up in resignation and cynisism. Yet we all know the power individuals can have with inspired vision, our very own Madiba is our precious example of this. We all seem to this potential and then we get caught up in all the “Nay Saying”, “it’s just not possible” type of thinking. So it’s no wonder that The Upliftment Programme (UP), a not-for-profit organisation – committed to Sharing JOY is expanding it’s outreach to bring joy not just to the children of Southern Africa – but to the obviously needy adults too. The UP has been actively sharing joy since 2003 – with their main outreach to the children in hospitals & institutions. They have been training UP volunteer Care Clowns nationwide – who in turn commit to their local hospital/home every week and share joy there with the children, parents and staff. Currently in Southern Africa there are over 75 volunteer Care Clowns, with a monthly JOYful Upliftment of appoximately 3500 people a month. WHAT'S NEW IN PLETT – 31 MARCH 2010
Nicola Jackman, Founder/Cheerlady of The UP says; “We’re building a network of JOY activists individuals who are committed to growing and sharing joy with others and anyone can join UP. Local Children learn about Pet Care
Ronelle Thomson has started a fascinating project in Qolweni with a group of children at an aftercare facility in the area. She is working with all age groups and has been given workbooks from the CVC organisation in Pretoria. She works through these books with the children teaching them basic care of pets, what to do and what not to do, instilling good pet-care practises amongst the children. The response from the little ones has been extremely good and they look forward to their hour-long sessions each Thursday afternoon from 4.00 to 5.00. Ronelle would really appreciate some help, be it in the form of volunteers to help her handle the various age groups separately, or with finger paints, crayons, paper and plastic aprons, etc. which she uses for various projects. Another form of teaching that is proving popular is making and using puppets to drive home the caring message. Anyone out there with knowledge of puppet-making and handling? Ray Farnham, NSRI Plettenberg Bay station commander, said: "At 14h48 NSRI Plettenberg Bay volunteers were activated following an eye-witness report of a jet-skier in difficulty in the surf at Keurbooms Beach, 1 nautical mile East of our Plettenberg Bay NSRI rescue base. "Conditions were a 1.5 meter swell and a gentle breeze. "We launched our sea rescue craft Sally Joan and on arrival on-scene an injured male was found to be already on the beach after he had reportedly ramped a wave in the surf while riding a jet-ski and coming down hard, on the other side of the wave, where the right side of the mans upper torso and head collided with the mirror on the jet-ski causing the man to sustain head and facial lacerations and contusions and to be thrown off the

"The man, from India, a contractual employee of a National South African Company, had reportedly hired the jet-ski and the hiring companies owner, who had gone jet-skiing with the patient, rescued him from the surf by loading him onto the back of his jet-ski and bringing him through the surf onto the beach while eye-witnesses, who witnessed the accident, raised the alarm. "The jet-ski was recovered from the surf by the hiring companies owner. "The patient was treated by our NSRI medics on the beach for concussion, a laceration to the head, a laceration to the cheek and bruising. "The patient was loaded onto our sea rescue craft Sally Joan and brought safely to our sea rescue base where he was handed into the care of Baycare paramedics and transported to hospital by a Baycare ambulance in a stable condition where he is undergoing further treatment." Snippets for the Week
This month has gone by so quickly. We planned to complete the left side of Phase I, as well as Sishuba Street, in Kwanokuthula. I am happy to say that together with Dr Naude and Dr van Reenen, we were able to reach our goals. Donations and funds received from the Charity Shop are not for my, or any other persons, personal gain. Without this funding, we would not have managed to spay 150 dogs & cats this year - at the cost of R300.00 per spay. All the animals are also given their annual vaccines, as well as their rabies injections, which amount to R50.00. These costs are at a greatly reduced rate and the Vets are not benefitting either. I am just grateful that they support this cause. For the past two years, I
have continued with spaying of animals in the townships and am now able to receive a renumeration for the many hours I dedicate to the animals in need. I am also blessed that we can afford to employ Fumene to help me, as well as Sandra and Hazel, who run the shop when I am out in the field. Please take note that the Charity Shop was opened for one reason only, to receive daily income which enables us to spay daily, reducing the amount of unwanted animals and inevitably reducing the amount of euthenising. As always, we are in need of any jumble. We are also desperate for dog & cat food. Any donations are greatly appreciated. Healing Energy Muddy waters, let stand - becomes clear! Missing Mail in Plettenberg Bay. The response to my letter in last week’s What’s New has been astronomical. The problem appears to be much larger than initially thought with not just Street Delivery mail missing but a number of people have phoned saying that they have had mail not delivered to their P O Boxes. Most people have said that it is Bank Statements that seem to be the prime item with missing mail. One of the complainants said that they have had half a million Rand stolen from their one bank account and they put the blame on their missing bank statements over the last few months. If you have had a problem with mail not being received either in your P O Box or Street address, please contact me as I am in touch with senior personnel in the Post Office in Cape Town to resolve this extremely worrying problem. Rest in Peace MARK DU PLESSIS
There is a new Angel in Heaven. Mark du Plessis passed over on 22 March 2011 after a valiant fight with cancer. For those who knew him, he was a genuinely great person. In the 10 years that I had the pleasure of knowing him, it was always a treat to engage with him, no matter whether he was going through good times or not so good. His positive attitude enriched those in his presence. Musician, script writer, builder, artist, hair stylist, friend and husband extraordinaire. He was fortunate to have found his twin soulmate in Marianne. May she have strength and comfort in her time of loss. Mark fulfilled his lifelong dream to move from Cape Town to Plett a few happy years ago. Although he left, he will return as his last wish was for his ashes to be scattered on Robberg, a place filled with soul. With love and respect ... The funds raised will be utilised mainly in our Bursary Fund which assists students to further their education at tertiary level. Estuaries: Where rivers meet the sea An estuary is where the river meets the sea, and plays an important role in the life of many animals. Throughout the day, week or year the physical and chemical variation can change dramatically. The major source of this variation is the tidal fluctuations. This means that the animals that live in these environments must be able to cope with these drastic changes in salinity, temperature and water level, making them very unique and special creatures. Many juvenile fish migrate into the estuaries during late winter, spring and early summer. This is when the water temperatures are high and the food supply is abundant. The juvenile fish are better protected from most marine predators in the estuaries and therefore rely on these habitats in order to survive into adolescence. The three Surf Ski Challenge events form part of the Plett Easter Games 2011, a four day Easter weekend sports festival which also includes a Trail Run (4km & 10km), Golf tournament, MTB Challenge (20km & 40km) and Road Run (10km). First and foremost, a very big thank you to all our supporters and those who continue to work behind the scenes to help the animal population of the Bitou area, wherever they may be. Last Sunday Malibu’s tavern that is affectionately known as KwaMathebula in Phase 2 of KwaNokuthula was a place to be, and Sundays will never be the same again in what had been already a favorite place to chill on Sundays afternoon for KwaNokuthula residents. Bitou Jazz Band a 7 member local band whom I first heard of it last year then I watched them perform in the official opening of KwaNokuthula taxi rank, decided to take their music to people choosing Bra-Thera’s place for the purpose of marketing the band and its music to locals with the intention of impressing in order for the public to think of them when they have corporate event such as weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, etc. The customers had shown much love to the band, they were dancing and singing along to the songs like I just wanna feel good by Lira, Township medley by Sbongile Khumalo, Music in the air by Letta Mbuli and Caiphus Semenya, Ungandi mosheli ixesha by Lira etc. The band vocalist Noluvuyo Shilowa leaded the group with beautiful and sweet voice as she engaged the audience very well. BE AWARE ! I have to share an unpleasant experience I had in one of our supermarkets - just as a warning. Criminals are using the following trick to steal purses out of handbags: A huge woman, very well dressed approached me and started bumping her trolley into mine. After she did it a few times, I asked her to stop it. She continued until I got really cross. At this moment a good looking, also very well dressed man appeared behind me and pretended in a gentleman's way to sort out our "differences". He stayed behind me, distracted me by pretending to separate the trolleys with his right hand and - as I found out later - used his left hand to open my handbag and steal the purse. He disappeared in one direction, the "lady" in another. I only realized what happened 5 min later and reported it straight away to the store manager, who tried to help. But the culprits were gone. Retina South Africa’s Gail Cillie wins award Mrs Gail Cillie, Chairperson of the East Cape Branch of Retina South Africa - Fighting Blindness was awarded the prestigeous Ophthalmological Society of South Africa - Citizen's Award. This was in recognition of exceptional and dedicated service to the visually impaired in South Africa. This was presented at the Annual Congress which was held in Port Elizabeth at the Feather Market Centre from 24th - 27th March 2011. Mrs Cillie also presented a paper to the Ophthalmic Nurses on the need for genetic counseling. Mrs Claudette Medefindt, the National Science Director of Retina South Africa and Deputy President of Retina International presented three papers to the Ophthalmologists and Optometrists and Mr. Anton van Rooyen, Vice-Chairperson of Retina South Africa - East Cape Branch presented a paper on Low Vision Assistive Devices. The latest on the 'Coming Together' Urban Integration Project. The new Horizons Library is starting to take shape with the foundation being completed, as previously mentioned, the building should be operational by the end of the year. Unfortunately due to temporary lack of finance the Magistrate's Court will only be started within the next two years. The cycling & pedestrian track should be in use shortly and hopefully residents will make use of this attractive facility. A New Horizons Community Liaison Officer will shortly be appointed whose duties will include the latest information on the developments. This appointment will take place at the farewell meeting in honor of Councillor Lawrence Luiters who has served his ward well over a considerable number of years. At that meeting the various role players involved in the 'Coming Together' project will be available to answer questions with reference to the project. Anyone is welcome! The meeting will take place at the New Horizons Community Hall on Thursday 7th. April starting at 18h00. The people answering queries will be available at 18h30. Local fitness facilities receive recognition in Heathrow London This year at London Convention held in Heathrow. Plettenberg Bay and Knysna received honorable award for Membership Growth Internationally. Plettenberg Bay and Knysna grew by of 48% and 52% respectively over the previous financial year. Brendon Andrade, the owner, stated that he was very proud of the teams for their persistence in doing their best. This was not the only awards grated through the year. Special recognition was given to Madeleen Janse van Vuuren (Plett) Ansu Colditz (Knysna) for being nominated as top 10 circuit coaches within Curves Africa.
