Wild Weather!

Our local weatherman Charlie Jackson reports that the Night of Tuesday 7th June was the Roughest night he has known in 50 years of weather observing with Winds up to Whole gale force during the night. On Wednesday morning the waves at Wedge were very high and breaking onto the Lookout Rocks. The Klein Piesang River rose over a metre…. Plett for all Seasons... . Sometimes in a single day. The winter days are still mostly warm and we are very grateful for the rain. The landart (what is left of it) is still a source of much conversation. A great pity that more of it was not left in situ for nature to mould and change, but some will be on display in various spots. NoKuthula still stands proud at the entrance to KwaNokuthula—her changing colours and regal bearing a delight to all. Lots of happenings to diarise. Great bargains to buy and enjoy...a good time for locals to ‘localize’ over coffee and around fires . Have another great week filled with fun!

Letter via the Editor A tip for those stuck in recession My belief of us as employees is very dull, but what can we do especially if you are married with kids. I believe there is no backup for employees, we only stand a slight chance with Black Sash and CCMA, but then you are unemployed. All we can do is expect only to get paid , not to be treated with dignity or respect. I know of managers with big responsibilities who earn R4000 per month before deductions. Look at the cost of food, petrol, not to mention education, but still you must work day in and out for peanuts, not to mention if you have debt. We are in so much trouble when ill or have family responsibility. So tell me where do we go when treated back at work, because when for example. A R10 item goes missing a labour consultant is called in whom is paid by the company, so whom do you think will win. How many doesn't know how you ended up on depression medication, I know it’s called taking all the ……….. at work and can’t say anything about it. I know believe me. On the other hand if there is no spinal cord for employee’s, if any problem arises do what I do, think of your family, it puts a smile on your face and expect nothing but your salary. A couple of years back I worked

for Ross Badenhorst . Ross is more than your way of thinking. At the time angry but all for good reason and not for long. I had and still do have a excellent relationship with him. He communicates with his staff as he would with his friends. I never knew what a job I had until I lost it, because of not thinking ahead, so let’s try to keep a good thing when we have it. If there could only be more Ross Badenhorsts and Wood knots. So if government can stop with their political wars, because they are grown ups and not being examples to the kinds. They should concentrate on making the work place more bearable and worthwhile because there are, at the bottom of the reception where we will stay. At the moment my work environment is satisfactory, so can’t everyone's be the same. My desire in life is to be employed at Bitou Municipality and get benefits for my family and myself, but need matric to be firefighter even though you currently a volunteer. My dream though, is to be employed by government and spend my days entering as shop, factory, supermarkets etc, and just see to it that employee’s are being treated fair, but can’t do that with no matric to, so please all students get something behind your name because you won’t get anywhere without matric and you won’t be able to give your children the life all kids deserve so please think ahead. Education is the first step to a success in life. Learn from my mistakes and appreciate what your parents are trying to do for you. I pray to God everyday to make this recession a thing of the past so life can go back to normal for the less fortunate. If we all pray God will answer. PLETT ANIMAL WELFARE SERVICES ( PAWS ) Inspectorate: 083 287 9917 A black male cat was recently brought in from the Longships area. He is long-haired and has brown flecks on his body and tail, with large amber eyes. It could be that he has been missing for a while. A female grey tabby was found in The Crags. She is quite large and has white around her mouth and white paws. There are currently 3 missing cats in Plett: all of them are black and white males ( 1 Persian & 2 Moggies). We have several loving animals looking for homes: 21 kittens, 5 young cats, 6 puppies and 3 young adult dogs. Oriented Birds make Plett Proud.

This month of June mark the 35th anniversary of June 16 that is popularly known as Sharpville Massac an incident whereby students were killed while protesting against learning in Afrikaans. Because of that incident June month has been regarded as youth month and June 16 reserved to celebrate and remember those who passed away that day. Like in any other city Bitou has been celebrating this event in the past years as young people will remember the program that ran throughout the month last year with an official launch and closing ceremony that was held at Piesang valley Hall. Although the event has created opportunity for local artists to perform and shine, there is still a lot to be done for the development of local talent as these opportunity should not only benefit the minority or individuals and other concern is that artists empowerment must not only during public events as they are part of young people who live within Bitou municipality must be included in the youth programs and that can only be achieve by including them during planning and implementing of youth development programs. So far I have not here anything official about this year’s June month program, the only thing I know is that Bitou Art & Culture Initiative (BACI) had submitted a proposal to Bitou municipality for a skills development workshop for local artists to be on the 15 and live performance or entertainment on the 16, but there is no response yet. On the 10th of June 2011, Vitorino "Vic" da Graça (67) and his 2 sons, Joao (36) and Pedro (32) will set off from Johannesburg, South Africa on a 1200km drive to Hobas in Namibia - the start of the Fish River Canyon. On June the 12th, they will make the 500m or so descent into the canyon before starting the 80 km gruelling trek to Ai-Ais. Why are they doing it? Well, apart from it being an awesome father-son bonding experience and the canyon being the second largest in the world, they will be doing it in order to raise funds for Retina SA (NPO Number 003-184) and raise awareness about Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD). AMD, a medical condition that results in a loss of vision in the center of the visual field (the macula) because of damage to the retina, is close to the heart in this family as Vitorino was diagnosed with the condition about 7 years ago. Retina SA (NPO Number 003-184) are a South African non-profit organisation who's aim is to promote research into retinal conditions such as Macular Degeneration. All costs for the hike are self-funded and all funds and donations raised by the hike will go to Retina SA. Leopard Monitoring in the Crags

To all readers and nature lovers: For some exciting info about what is going on in the Crags area that not many people may know about, read further and you will be filled in! My name is Nicholas van Tonder and I am a Nature Conservation student doing my final year as an intern at Ingwe Forest Adventures. One of the projects I am working on is to track and monitor Leopards in this area under the guidance and support of the Landmark Foundation and Ingwe. This allusive majestic creature captivates many of us and sometimes the only way we know one is around is when we hear via the grape vine. In some sad cases, we also hear that a farmer has shot one dead or set gin traps to catch it because it has been assumed that it caught some of his live stock. I have recently been approached by a farmer that has been losing

livestock and even though this is a loss for him, it also very encouraging to know that this farmer supports non-lethal methods and is willing to work with this project to identify if; in fact, it is a Leopard that is doing the killing. A cage has been placed nearby the pastures where the livestock is kept, with the aim to catch, collar and release this “Leopard”. If this is successful then it will enable us to monitor and keep records of the whereabouts of this Leopard. For more information on the process of collaring Leopards visit www.landmarkfoundation.org Everyday feels like Christmas to me when walking to this cage and anticipation is streaming through me, to see if there is anything inside. Sadly our cage still remains empty, but this job tests your patience but the end result is always worth it. I would appreciate support from all local farmers, and home owners who could help us with information on leopard sightings. The aim is to track as many Leopards in this area so we can restore and maintain Leopard diversity in this area. To those that have spotted then in the wild, I envy you! It’s very rare that such occasions occur. My aim is to get as many people Leopard friendly as possible, including farmers, because believe it or not, there are effective non-lethal methods to keep a Leopard away from your livestock. DENTISTS I am so scared of dentists and I am sure that if a psychologist looked into my in utero times they would come up with the reason. It is so fashionable nowadays to go and see "someone" to find out why your child is a drunk, or a drug addict, or your marriage is failing, or your business is falling apart, etc. When I was eighteen and newly married, I had one tooth that required a dentist on a few occasions - no others , just that one. In desperation I told the dentist to remove it and, unlike the dentists of today, he did just that. I have very healthy teeth but all spaced out in my latter years due to that early removal of a very important tooth. I see dentists as little as possible, the last time was two years ago. Last week, while happily chewing away on a wine gum, my one and only crown attached itself to said wine gum. Desperate stakes, where do I go? The family recommended the old faithful family dentist whom they have all used for years. Gritting my teeth I stepped into the rooms of the OLD lady dentist. I was greeted by a youngish lady in jeans and a very 'with it' top. I was waiting for the little old lady to come hobbling out of the depths with a foot worn out from pushing the floor drill, but no, the young lady above was she. I was so happy that she could still walk and talk and hold a drill that my initial fears faded a bit. I still walked into the dreaded room with the dreaded chair giving her instructions non-stop on my fears of pain and how I have such

Very patiently she assured me she would give me anything I wanted for pain; injections, sedation, anaesthetic, the works. So once again I relaxed. She stuck back the cap and then wanted to scale & polish, etc. No, no, said I, not without 'mingi' injections. The check up and clean were painless but she spotted a couple of holes! So gripping her hand and with my genuine plastic nails buried in her skin, I had to find out about more pain things. She assured me that the injections she had already given would do the trick and that she would only do two on one side. I made her tap and flick and scratch the area before I let her carry on. Now would you believe I DOZED OFF in the dentists chair! What a good experience. So much so that I made the next appointment and as I walked out I noticed the secretary peeling the dentist off the ceiling. Just for the record her name is Dina Grabe, she is not old & shaky , her teeth do not clap around in her mouth and she does not dribble. She does not have white goo in the corner of her eyes and her eyes are not bleary. She also drives a car and shops and all those normal things the young do. Lots of love, Chatterbox

We said a fond farewell to a “lady of substance” Dulcy Oosthuizen recently and are delighted to share this story by Sue van Waart (another great lady who many remember)

A fisherwoman story about Dulcy Oosthuizen

Our famous Dulcy, who is well known beyond our borders as a fisherwoman is a character in the best sense of the word. Such was obvious in 1991 when she turned 50. Her sisters and brothers-in-law saw to that, for she had reared them after the early death of her mother from a heart attack. She said, “I was born in Piesang Valley in part of the house I still occupy. Then it was a corrugated iron house. My fishing began as a four-year-old catching eels in the Piesang River with cotton and a bent pin. I’ll never forget. The first time I ran home my grandfather asked, “ Duls why are you running?” I told him that we had caught a snake on the pin. He then pointed out that it was an eel. Whenever a chicken was slaughtered the innards were given to Dulcy for bait. There were plenty of Galjoen in the late forties... She often thought of Long James, who could throw a line further than anyone. Seven foot tall and black as the ace of spades, he was once fired on at night by her grandfather and lay all night in a furrow. He was their idol. For her birthday her mother once gave Long James money and told him to teach Dulcy. He made her walk from the Plett car park around Robberg, learning all the names of the fishing spots. The first time she went into the deep sea it was with Angus MacCallum and his black Mozambican wife, Fiela’s child. She was smacked by Angus the second, for not climbing properly out of the fishing boat– until she learnt the right way. In the fifties she would go out with the fishing boats and had to learn to catch with a line, no poles, as they did. The largest kabeljou she caught was a 35-pounder. The largest tuna was 340 lb, but that was in Mauritius. From 1971 she tried for marlin and in 1978 caught one of 345 lb. It took her two and a half hours and three days to land– the three days for her stretched muscles. She belonged to the International Game Fishing Nomads. In 1989 there were 93 fisherman there for marlin... Old Gull, a fisherman, believed that if the seagulls went to land the bad weather was on the way. Once she was caught in a

storm, but learnt not to panic. Just turn the boat’s nose homewards and you’ll eventually get there. … There was a strong fishing tradition until 1980. Now only Johnny Gallant remains. He sometimes remains on Robberg for a week, taking his wife Avva with him. The McGolloms and their descendants are also fishermen… Until the sixties people used to camp in tents - by the old Rectory on Central beach. We would go to the ‘Langstrand’ (Long Beach) toward Robberg. There were no cafés. ...There’s a belief that if bad weather comes a little stone rolls in a kabeljou’s head– and fishing will be bad. One must be patient to catch fish. Sometimes they taste the bait and spit it out, then come back later. Give it a chance to bite properly. Brown people have patience. One must learn to think like a fish.’ ...Dulcy is a living legend. They were ten sisters, the oldest and youngest being cripples. She taught all her brothers-in-law to fish, and thereby got to know them. She took some Transvaalers out fishing. They spent the day pulling them in. The next day she didn’t accompany them and they caught nothing… She was also a golfer. One day at a prize-giving she received an urgent telephone call to return home as John Young, her brother-in –law, had just caught his first fish, a 23 lb poenskop. She once had to take a cocky potential brother-in-law fishing, so they went to Storms River at night. He was loaded with gear and fell and twisted his ankle. She refused to return so they continued to the Otter Trail. She the realized that he had the bag with all the sinkers in. She called the ghillie, Johnny Swartkop, who confessed that as the man wanted to be cocky, he had sorted him out! After that they never saw him again. Dulcy always swore that the best fishing was along the Tsitsikamma coast. The late Graham Monk caught a 109 lb red steenbras there. Since it was closed to become a reserve she prefers Robberg. They could load the boats until 1965... people complain that there are no longer sand mussels, but they move around... She felt that rock fishing was poor because of the use or nylon lines. They break off and eventually cover the red bait on the rocks, so the fish go further out. In the old days the fishing line would rot after a while… After 1990 when the tjokka boats come in she would radio the skippers and point out the rubbish their crews threw overboard, bottles, plastic, etc. She is now the marina manager at

the Plett fishing club, something she always wanted to do. Dulcy’s older sister is a cripple and the youngest has Down’s syndrome. Dulcy looked after her until she was 24, but she then went to an institution and visits annually. She’s mad over flying. Dulcy was 14 when she wrote std 8 in 1954. Then she had to go work. She began pig farming at 15, then mealies, then building. She become the town’s first provider of sanitaryware, the beginning of her hardware store. Then she heard that the building her shop was in was for sale. She borrowed money, bought it and had repaid the loans within three years. In 1968 she built walls around the zinc house she lived in, bought additional land and in 1972 added to the house. She prayed a lot in those years to manage financially. In 1981 Dulcy got coronary thrombosis, aged 41. She then sold the business but kept the property and lived from the rents. Since then property prices have soared. In 1981 Plettenberg Bay had two large floods. The lowest tender to repair the fishing club was R68000, but she did it for R30 00. The marina manager then died and she phoned the chairman, Bob Fourie, then flew back from Johannesburg and was given the position. The club house has since had a R100,000 renovation. Twice a year she organizes a picnic for the aged at Keurbooms River. She trains youngsters to fish. The chairman of the club, Frik de Wit, says that she cannot be bought for gold - a formidable person and the club runs like clockwork. The men respect her, as she can outfish them and has been known to stay out in stormy seas while most fisherman head for home. On Monday 6 June 2011, the Piesang Valley Hall burst through its seams from members of the public who wanted to be a part of the long awaited inauguration. A very interesting gathering. Like some of the members of the public said, “It is obvious from the look of numbers.” But everything was done by the book, a very democratic election. Rotary Anns’ Report 2010-2011

As we end our Rotary year I am pleased to report our another busy and successful time. Selling jumble is our main source of income and we thank all those kind people who donate to us. From the proceeds this year we have been able to assist; FAMSA, New Horizons Pensioners Forum, Plett Primary School, Wittedrift Clinic, Santa TB Clinic, Crags Primary School, Fire Victims, Celia Buso, Tanushka, ‘E’ Pap, Theodora Krabie soup kitchen, Jack & Jill Educare centre. Taxi fares for patients in Knysna hospital to Plett. Also from the jumble we have assisted Born in Africa and the far outlying districts of Plett where there is a dire need. This we do through Plett Clinic. Once again our thanks to all volunteer knitters for blankets, beanies, cardigans and scarves. These have all been distributed to those in need & gratefully accepted as winter approaches. Our monthly Formosa Garden Village outings continue and are happy occasions & our thanks to the Village staff for their help. Our two day Christmas wrapping was a great success and we thank the management of the Market square centre for allocating us this space. Jumble remains our source of income and special mention is made to Anita Schnell of Plett Primary who every year organizes a huge collection of jumble for us and we thank her and all the children who bring it. Dat ons gaan bars is ‘n feit soos ‘n seekoei. 3 Olifant by die See—Land Art Event Ons skool het die wonderlike geleentheid gehad om deel te wees van die Eden to Addo Corridor Initiative wat standbeelde van olifante by “Seekoppe”. Die luisterryke geleentheid was gedry deur verskeie kunstenaars en ander rolspelers. Die meer as 50 graad 7 en 8 leerders was diep onder die besef van ons rol in the natuur en ons erflating. Lunchbox Theatre Ons het ook as skool baie baat gevind by die aanbieding van bovermelde groep. Die klem was waterbesparing en in ‘n area en land waar water ‘n laakse is, is dit ‘n absolute moet dat ons dit wat ons het spaarsamig en suinig moet gebruik. The Bitou Community Veterinary Clinic Charity Shop We need to make the Public aware that our Charity Shop is the only form of income we have, to continue sterilizing and helping animals in the poorer communities. It is so very important to continue sterlizing, as this greatly reduces the amount of unwanted animals, which inevitably reduces the amount of euthenising. Working in Kwanokuthula daily, I come accross so many tragic cases regarding the welfare of the animals. So many are run over by cars, as the properties are not enclosed. On Tuesday I found a dog whose badly dismantled front legs were covered in maggots of all shapes and sizes. He was hit on Saturday and left unattended, in the worst pain ever. In one area, every third dog had TVT cancer, which is transferable by mating. There are so very many homeless strays, so starved and so very thin. These dogs need to be removed, as this is the kindest thing to do. Many owners find themselves with up to 8 dogs on their properties and are desperate to reduce the amount of animals they are feeding. I cannot tell them that they must keep them, as we have nowhere to take them. These dogs are breeding and I cannot spay unwanted dogs. For this reason, we have to continue with euthenising, which is extremely difficult for all involved, to do.
