WHAT'S NEW IN PLETT - 3 JUNE 2010

"Pardon!" "Say that again!" "What's that you said?" Do you know anyone who uses these words a lot? … Perhaps yourself? Why not have your hearing evaluated. It's completely painless and straightforward. And you'll be amazed to discover how the latest digital technology from Widex has been adapted to suit your lifestyle. Hearing aids have come a long, long way in the last 5 years, when in 1997, Widex introduced 'Senso', the worlds's first digital hearing aid.

In 2001 Widex broke new barriers with 'Senso Diva'. It features a dual amplifier system that, unlike other aids, stays constantly in tune, doesn't cause feedback and sits comfortably in or outside your ear. Now with the new Senso Diva we've invented a way of ensuring that you hear what you focus on and tune out what you don't. Just as the healthy ear does. More importantly it allows its user a way to get involved in conversations, to listen to the TV and to music without interference. To hear the birds singing - to be part of life again.

Set during the age of vikings and dragons, our hero is the bookish son of a viking chief, and as such rather a disappointment to daddy. The vikings are having a terrible time dealing with the attacking dragons, until our hero manages to make friends with one of the dragons. This sets in motion a chain of events which will change things between the vikings and the dragons forever.

PLETT MOVIE HOUSE : 044-533 3952 SCHUKS TSABALALA’S Comedy, Family Schuks is commissioned by the 2010 tourism body to produce a movie as a visual guide for tourists visiting South Africa for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Schuks and "Shorty" become entangled with and exhausted by the red tape of forming a B.E.E.-compliant company, and decide to produce Schuks Thabalala's Survival Guide to South Africa instead. Schucks Thabalala is a teacher and a tourist guide to a mixed bag of tourists who are taking his survival guide to SA very seriously. They are genuinely eager to learn about SA, so Schuks and Shorty are only too happy to oblige with a series of hysterical demonstrations of life in SA. Cast: Leon Schuster and Alfred Ntombela PRINCE OF PERSIA Adventure, Action, Romance Based on the popular video games, this Jerry Bruckheimer / Walt Disney production is aimed squarely at young boys. Our hero, the Prince, is actually born a commoner but raised and trained in the palace. As a young man, he launches an attack on a foreign city suspected of harbouring dangerous weapons. There they come upon the mysterious Sands of Time, an hourglass capable of reversing time. However you need a special knife to control this device, and the rest of WHAT'S NEW IN PLETT – 3 JUNE 2010

Heat your house at no cost

Find a blank North facing brick wall, in full sun, at your house and build a frame against the wall (seal it ) of say 900 x 1800 vertical about a 100mm from the wall. Chop through into the house. Paint the wall within the frame black and fit and seal laminated safety glass to the outside of the frame. The sun heats the black wall behind the glass and sucks cold air from the inside from the bottom pipes. When Summer comes, you cap the top pipes inside and open two top pipes fitted on the heating required depends on the number of panels fitted. This is called a ‘Trombe wall’ (Google it). This idea was first patented in 1881 and used in the 1960’s when the Hippy’s cared about the environment. We just forgot about it. Paul Scheepers

The official launch of youth month activities took place at the Piesang Valley Hall on Tuesday evening with a packed hall of enthusiastic young people from all the suburbs of Bitou. Andile Mbali and the Mayor both inspired everyone with speeches and the Field Band, Slow Poison and Opera Star Mike Bayabile entertained everyone wonderfully with voice, music and dance/drama 8 Shirts were won and 1 ticket to the 2010 match in Port Elizabeth, and then our mayor surprised all by giving out 50 more tickets sponsored by FIFA (incl transport). The 2010 World Cup

by Kim Jones There goes a Hullabaloo An uproar! A salute - A sign of respect We salute this achievement; To be proudly South-African’s Finally the 2010 World Cup: On the stadiums, next to our televisions Some of us growled a deep angry sound in the throat; Then suddenly a feeling of certainty; Like a chant, while watching a ligament a piece of the tough flexible tissue that holds their bones together Feel it; it is here! There goes a collassal, then a lunch a feeling that you can guess what will happen… The the 2010 World Cup: Only proudly South-Africans are nationalist or patriotic We want our country to be independent that day… The 2010 World Cup a chasms deep Opening in the ground A chain of events People gathering around Different cultures, languages, skin and atmosphere. Make the circle bigger…. A row of metal rings fastened together; Be a good Ambassader for the 2010 FIFA World Cup A proudly South-African Citizen.

Car Guards who know? Can our Plett Carguards insist on drivers parking properly? I think they should have some say as to where and how people park. When bad drivers park illegally on pavements and in no parking zones, I think our Carguards should have the right to correct their bad driving or have some way of communicating with our Traffic Officers about bad parking and the Bolshy Boykies in their Bakkies! Who runs the Carguards anyway? I think they need more support from whomever it is! Lets keep Plett Special ‘Parked Out’

Hot Talent in Bitou

The second year of The Lunchbox Theatre and Bitou Tourism’s Performance and Creative Arts Showcase (Tshisa Talent) initiative got off the ground with a flying start. The Lunchbox team of Stuart Palmer, Mncedisi Ncedani and Spida Matyhila have been visiting various local Bitou communities and meeting with a wide and diverse range of artists. According to Stuart Palmer, the response has been amazing. “We have easily received five times more applications than in 2009. It just reiterates that the artists are hungry for a platform on which to showcase their works,” mentions Palmer. All the registered artists will be auditioning in front of a panel of judges from 31 May to 9 June 2010. The judges will select the top three performing and top three visual artists from each community. These winners will then host concerts at their local community halls during the week of 28 June to 8 July. This event will be open to the general public and serve as a wonderful showcase for the best talent in each community. From these showcases, the judges will select one artist in each category to compete in the finals. The finals will produce the overall winners in the performance and visual arts categories who will be crowned ‘Tshisa Talent Artist of the Year’. The process does not however stop at the finals. “Our major mission with this project is skills development and job creation. We are planning a series of workshops for later in the year where artists will be able to share their skills and learn from each other. We are also creating a database that will be

Looking for upmarket rental properties to add to our growing portfolio used to market these artists to local businesses and event organisers,” explains Mncedisi Ncedani. The organisers have decided to promote this project as Tshisa Talent which means ‘Hot’ Talent. With over 200 applicants ranging from poets to potters, opera to hip-hop, bead work to gospel, there is little doubt that Tshisa Talent 2010 is going to be ‘HOT’! NEED INVOICE BOOKS? Michael van der Walt

is a talented up and coming artist. He holds a BMus degree from Wits University, with piano and vocal performance as majors. Over the years he composed many songs and a few instrumental works, which shows a unique spread of influences ranging from classical to rock ballad genres. He has been involved in the performing and arranging of a variety local Christmas and Easter productions in and around the Garden Route over the past few years. The future holds a possibility of an album to be recorded and will be available country wide. The aim of the production is to take the audience on a musical journey through deep and meaningful lyrics that most will be able to relate to. In between some comic moments, the audience will experience honest and real songs, in heart and soul relating to everyday experiences of life and love. These are all part of the magical journey a journey guaranteed not to be forgotten anytime soon, as Michael van der Walt speaks through his music that is directed at the heart. A six piece ensemble of professional musicians will be joining Michael van der Walt on stage during the production. The public of the Garden Route can capture the magic during June with performances in Plettenberg Bay on Wednesday June 16, Knysna on Thursday June 17, Mosselbay Friday June 18 and Stilbay Saturday June 19. For more information contact Gavin Bezuidenhout, 0835027935.

Snippets for the Week

………By Heidi Sad week for me, as we lost a puppy I had fostered for 5 weeks, who became cripple. Sad week as well, for all the starving, injured, manged and unwanted dogs I am finding out there. We did however, manage to spay 30 dogs & 7 cats during May, bringing our total spayed for the year to 192. Thank you to everyone who donated towards this achievement, as well as the Vets for making time to spay & treat. Together we are making a difference. As everyone is aware, we are totally dependant on your contributions to continue with this project. We really need all the help we can get. Our Charity Shop should be opening at the end of June. Any jumble can be dropped off at Pandora’s Box. Please have a good clean out, as your unwanted clutter provides the animals with a better life. This is our goal and is so important. Should anyone have spare shelving, rails, coat hangers or anything which we could use for displaying the beautiful clothing and bric- a- brac we have received, please contact me. Thank you to Sue and Mr Bass for donating your birthday money to our fund. What a wonderful gesture. Also a very special thanks to Geoff for making my job so much easier, by donating 2 large travelling boxes. WHAT'S NEW PLETT 3 JUNE 2010 It saves me anINextra trip,– as the dogs can

now be separated, and we also have less problems in removing them from the bakkie. You just don’t know how much you have helped! Also to MC Radio Station, for always broadcasting our project. Healing Energy for the Week I can risk doing what I feel is right! Heidi - 082 212 1613

On the 9th of June 2010 2 days before kick-off at exactly 12 O clock, for 5 minutes, stop what you are doing, get your Vuvuzelas, and blow on it like never before. I wish you wouldn’t cry the way you did today. While thinking of many things, we didn’t get to say I know how much you love me, as much as I love you. And each time you think of me, I know you’ll miss me too. But when tomorrow starts without me, please try to understand that an angel came and called my name, and took me by the hand and said: my place is ready in heaven for above and that I had to leave all those behind that I really love. But as I turned to walk away, a tear full from my eye. For all my life I always thought I don’t want to die, I had so much to live for, .so much left yet to do. Knysna WESSA AGM

At a well attended meeting, Chairman Ian Withers made an excellent speech touching on many items including, development in the Knysna area, was the bypass actually going to happen? Knysna Municipality Council has set up an Environmental Committee. A new development is proposed for Swartvlei. The Knysna Municipality Project is sampling storm water drains with the Knysna Municipality. Worst drought since records have been kept, devastating fires and critical water shortage resulting in a desalination plant being installed at Sedgefield. A Leopard had been spotted [no pun] on the farm Gansvlei in December, another was snapped by camera at Noetzie. The Pledge Nature Reserve is up and running smoothly once more. Excerpts from the

STATE OF THE TOWN ADDRESS

BY THE EXECUTIVE MAYOR, ALDERMAN LULAMA MVIMBI ON APRIL 30, 2010 Ralph Waldo Emerson once said that “the secret of education is respecting the pupil”. Part of respecting children should be to prepare them to educate themselves throughout their lives. This is the philosophy behind Early Childhood Development throughout to tertiary education. We have dedicated a lot of resources to Early Childhood Development. This has seen us increasing our financial contribution to assist Early Childhood Development centres. We started with R122 000 in 2006 and gradually grew the fund to R450 000 in 2007/2008, to R200 000 in 2008/2009, and R1m in 2009/2010. We do not only give financial assistance but regularly meet with the leaders of these centres. And now have a formal structure with which we interact to ensure that the Early Childhood Development programmes are supported and have impact on the formative years of our children’s intellectual development. Though education is not our competency, our commitment towards education has taken us to tertiary level by way of annual bursaries given to local children studying at institutions of higher learning as well as at colleges of Further Education and Training. In 2006 we had a total of 12 students. This has grown to 43 students in 2010 at a total cost of R430 000. We also committed ourselves to assist the Bitou Ten Foundation for three years, starting in 2008/2009 financial year. We have been involved in various focussed projects, including back to school campaigns, at the beginning of every school year and building of infrastructure like paving at schools in our townships. We believe that our involvement in this way to the education of our children will go a long way to showing that we respect the growing minds in our society. Part of developing a learning nation has seen us built a library in Kranshoek. But we have taken into account that we are one of the rapidly growing community in this province and country. For that we are planning to build a Central Library in New Horizons. The library and the Justice Centre, which also in New Horizons, form part of our bigger project commonly known as “Coming Together”. The “Coming Together” initiative has proven not only as a massive injection into our infrastructure development but also a big injector into our local economy. In his State of the Nation Address in February 2010, President JG Zuma said; “We need to invest in our youth to ensure a skilled and capable workforce to support growth and job creation. We therefore plan to increase the training of 16-25 year olds in further education and training facilities. This will enable us to provide a second chance at education, for WHAT'S NEW IN PLETT – 3 JUNE 2010

those who do not qualify for university.” And the Minister of Finance, Mr P Gordhan remarked that; “almost half our young people have not found work.” In line with these two leaders of our government, the municipality of Bitou undertook to focus on the opportunities for the youth and how policies of a developmental local government can help young people attain success. In this regard, we established a Youth Advisory Centre, located in New Horizons. The Centre is hub of activity by young people who use it to search information on economic projects, education, sports and government services. Our Youth Unit made it possible for us to have an intake of about 50 internships. Our driver’s licence project had been the most successful as many of our young people managed to get driver’s licenses which is one of the criteria required in many job applications. South Africa is a water scarce country. Other than that we must be careful on how humans use water, we are also faced with the problem of alien plants that use a lot of our water resources. As it has become a culture, we invited members of the community to submit their input into this report and we received responses from some people. We are thankful to all letter received. Some of the issues raised in those letters have been captured in this address. One of the people who wrote to us is Mr Christo Vlok of the Ratepayers Association wrote to us and said; ....the Keurbooms Lagoon is put at severe environmental risk due to large amounts of water being pumped from the dwindling water supply of the Keurbooms River. If this town is put on permanent water restrictions in the future, this will be extremely detrimental to further population growth in what should be a beautiful green town”. Our region is currently going through a severe drought season. We had to take measures of putting some restrictions on water usage. This has been a great inconvenience to many of our people but we had to do it, lest we found ourselves without a drop of water. With the help of the department of Water Affairs, we intensified our removal of alien vegetation project, and we will monitor the situation to ensure that our water resources are protected. In order to secure drinkable water for our community during droughts like the one we have now, the government has allocated us R20m for the development of a desalination plant as an emergency measure. This project will also address concerns of Mr Vlok and others who have been worried about the levels dams. One of the many achievements brought by our high standard of work we do as the municipality is that we have improved on the quality of our drinking water. Last year we had 96.78 % of Blue Drop score. We have improved that to 97.7%. We are number 2 in the province and number 3 in the country of 283 municipalities. Only the country’s two biggest cities, Johannesburg and Cape Town did better than us. However, the gap between us and Cape Town narrowed down to less than 1%. Our water is the safe for

drinking. This is an achievement we must be proud of as the people of Bitou. We completed the drop-off and collection zone on the N2 opposite Bossiesgif. In order to ensure that the zone becomes a focussed point of meeting for the unemployed, we partnered with Red Door to ensure that unemployed people receive skills to prepare them not only as jobseekers but also as potential entrepreneurs. The Kwanokuthula Taxi rank has also been completed at a cost of R3.5m. The new facility gives dignity to both commuters and taxi operators in the area and is a vast improvement on our local public transport infrastructure. The infrastructural development in Bossiesgif/Qolweni; the planned Justice Centre and Central Library in New Horizons; the landscaping, Bitou Boulevard, Retail Complex, SMME Retail Hub and Street Parking in Kwanokuthula; relocation of the municipal buildings and establishment of a government precinct in Ladywood are all part of our “Coming Together” project. Mr Speaker There is no questioning that “what gets most measured gets done. If you can’t measure performance you can’t tell success from failure. If you can see success you can’t be worried.” In order to constantly measure the success of our endeavours to improve service delivery, our interaction with the community had not been restricted to imbizos and ward committee meetings only. Our Ward Committee system has been effective in deepening participatory democracy. While there are some problems related to some ward committee members not being active and ultimately resigning, our municipality’s system been accepted as one of the best in the country. I am told that one District and its municipalities in North West has adopted the system. We are humbled that some municipalities accept in the country our way of doing things as best practise. We have supplemented our ward system with the “walk abouts”. This is where Councillors go about meeting with people in their streets, at their houses; getting direct feedback on service delivery. With a view of giving special attention to the needs of our people, we visited the elders in each ward and gave them a chance to talk to us about governance in our town. These visits were very fruitful. The old people at Formosa Village were the most interesting. Other than raising genuine governance issues, they also provide possible solutions. Many of their proposals have been included in our plans for 2010/2011 financial year. We will be visiting other sectors like youths, sports, care-givers, religious formations, and others in the coming months. At times we pay unexpected visits to municipal funded projects to see how things are done and whether public funds are being correctly used. One of the most effective ways of getting to know what the needs of our community are has been the usage of Community Development Workers. Continued in next edition

Golf For God Golf Day

Saturday 22 May saw perfect weather for the 4th annual Golf For God Golf Day at Goose Valley to raise funds for Mount Sea Emmaus, a non-denominational Christian walk for all churches on the Garden Route. Organizer Wayne Booth said the day was a huge success, with a final figure raised at just over R24000, up over 20% on last year. Thanks to Niki and staff at Goose Valley for pulling out all the stops and assisting us in ensuring the Golf For God Golf Day has become known as the golf event of the year that’s not to be missed-with awesome prizes and a fun format of scramble tee drive and 3 mulligan’s per player based on a 4 ball alliance 2 scores to count. The prize giving was a bit festive trying to hand out prizes and auction between the first half and second half of the Bulls - Crusaders game. The winning fourball of D. Bester, H. Joubert, L. Burger, M. van Vuuren scoring a massive 115 points-from a field of 90 players. Special thanks to the following sponsors:

World Cup Soccer Day – Kranshoek Primêr Soos verlede week vermeld hou ons ʼn reuse voorbrand net sewe dae voor die World Cup aanbreek. Vraag: Can you feel it? Antw: Yes we can!

Rizaan S.Hatjies

Welcome to all the Whale Rally Riders we hope you enjoy the town again. Well done to the Plett Police which have once again made some very good arrests of House Breakers in our area. There where groups caught in town and in The Crags area. There has been a lot of talk about when a case can be made and if the Police should refuse to take a case. I would like to try clear this up. If any criminal activity has taken place EG House breaking ,theft out of motor Vehicle, Theft , Shoplifting, assault , fraud , Malicious Damage to property and many others. You as public, if you have personally been affected you are entitled to make a case. A Police

BODY STRESS RELEASE Peter & Sandra Gird 082 819 8933 official will always ask you ‘are you sure you want to make a case.’ The reason for this is purely as a lot of people do not want to go to court. Then in all cases there must be the elements of Crime which in Short means the perpetrator must have known that he is doing wrong. Examples: the shoplifter knew he was going to steal the Chocolate. The man kicked the door down to assault you. In the case were it is accidental or for self-preservation, then it is not done with intent. EG A car swerves to miss a child running out and crashes into the wall of a house. This person had no intent to hit the wall. It was to avoid hitting

the child. This would become a Civil Case. The only other time that a Policemen will not take a case is when it is civil case. Often people are in Contracts or verbal contracts and these are clearly Civil Cases. If a Policemen does not accept your case and it is a Clear Criminal case that Officer is guilty of a crime, which is impeding the course of Justice. If you have any other questions about this feel free to contact Plett Police Station and they will clarify any queries you may have. PS “ZERO TOLERANCE ON DRINK DRIVING “ - Please use or Local Taxi`s they are always available. Letter via the Editor On Friday 14th May at about 08h30 I was once again attacked while washing my car at the house. Once again it was a large hooded man who hit me and demanded money. As there was no money in the house, I was hit again and he eventually left with only my Kodak Digital camera. I am most indebted to the following people: - Mary-Anne for putting ADT on speed dial on my cell, - The guys from ADT who responded within minutes when called and who are always there when needed. Thank you ADT for assisting me by escorting me home, your organization is tops. - Dr van Vuuren and Sister Lloyd for attending to me at short notice, many thanks. - All members of SAPS from Kwanokuthula who were efficient, caring and kind, and Sergeant Jacobs who drove me to the Doctor, thank you all. Inspector van Hysteen from the Rural Patrol who toured the area, thank you. - The member of SAPS from George who recorded and fingerprinted the house, my appreciation and thanks. - W.O.Schwaltz who will be investigating my case, thank you. - Finally I would like to place on record my appreciation to Lt. Col. Lugebu, our Station Commander who came to see us in the afternoon to assure us that the Police would do everything possible to finalise the case. I feel confident that I can depend on our Policing Services to do everything possible to finally arrest this man. If anyone has any information, please could you contact the police or phone me on 072 202 7273. I need your help. Rosemary Murray

Feel It It’s Here

Bafana Bafana perfomance has been improved after last week matches, they play together as a team, attack from the first half to the second half in order to get more goals, they are playing, they really show how much are serious, confidence. Our team is so strong, they know how much we trust them as South African fans. It’s so encouraging the way they are playing now than previous years, each and everyday coach Alberta Parrera work on their mistakes, he know with the players we as the fan we want the cup to South Africa not another country. Lets keep on supporting our team by wearing anything for Bafana Bafana or hold South Africa Flag. Good Luck Bafana Bafana Advisor

Notice For PAWS

for those who are confused about the financial input by PAWS for animals in distress in Plett, the following prevails. All animals treated or euthanased by the various vets, are subsidized by PAWS. This includes most of the animals that Heidi kindly delivers for care. The balance is paid for through her own personal account from funds and raises through selling jumble etc. The Bitou C.V.C. charity organisation to which Heidi attaches herself, only subsidises sterilizations done at Marine Way Veterinary Clinic as this organisation is controlled by Dr Bert van Rheenen. Sterilizations done by the remaining vets are cash payments from Heidi’s funds. Each spay is recorded by the Bitou C.V.C. which is then reimbursed by the South African Veterinary association C.V.C. PAWS have for 10 years plus, also funded sterilizations done at reduced rates by local veterinarians when the funds have been available. PAWS continues to provide primary health care within the townships and do as much as they can to raise funds to subsidise these services.
