Fabulous Squad’s glittery prize giving a huge success

On 18th December on the New Horizon sports fields squad netball club held its 1st ever prize giving gala event. This evening was sole ly successful because of contributions from Pamela Bates of Ocean Safaris, The Dougherty`s Stephanie from Garden Route green, John Paulsen, and the duo of Plett football, Marius Jafta and Derrick Philander. Night at the Oscars didn`t fail as all the players came out looking like stars, including our very own Executive Mayor, Lulama Mvimbi. Once again Zenzal make a sterling job in decorating the venue to the standards of stars. Master of ceremonies Adam, owner of the team, was wowed when the Mayor applauded his team for being a trend setter in this sport. “ Its clear you have managed your team very well, that’s why we are here tonight to reap the hard work you put in for the year”, the Mayor said. Fabulous Squad, which consists of a junior women`s team, a senior men`s team and a solid senior women`s team , unveiled their new junior kit for the New Year to compete in. What a delight to all since nobody knew about it and it was well received all round. 2010 saw the team playing in six major competitions. 3rd May Easter tournament at home, silver medalists. 14th-16th May they travelled to Zoar and were gold medalists. 26th-27th June was active in Humansdorp in the Royal Stars tournament and was bronze medalists. 7th August at home in the Women`s Day tournament. 21st August they went to Hoekwil, playing in the American Swallows tournament. 25th September at home in the fabulous sounds shield netball championships, silver medalists. The players were rewarded for their efforts by receiving certificates for completing in all competitions, including gold medals for Netball year 2010. The awards was as follows: MOST IMPROVED PLAYER OF THE YEAR-Alexandria Paulse. DEFENDER OF THE YEAR-Maurisha Swarts. WING DEFENSE OF THE YEAR –Lizel Kamfer. CENTER OF THE YEAR-Venessa van Rhymer. Unfortunately, only 2 dogs were spayed last week, due to the fact that I was away. This week we are managing to spay a total of 14 dogs. Many of them pregnant! I am finding very bad cases of abuse and neglect on a daily basis. Many dogs are hungry and spend their days in search of food. I have came across about 6 dogs with very bad burns. To think that some one can actually pour boiling water on a dog because he has wandered onto their property. A very sweet, slightly retarded guy approached me last week. He keeps chickens and sells the eggs. He lets the chickens roam free and collect their own food. Unfortunately, the crows have been taking the baby chicks and this has upset him terribly. He now keeps them in a large enclosure. The problem he now has, is that he cannot always afford to feed them. Should anyone wish to donate a bag of WHAT'S NEW IN PLETT - 13 JANUARY 2011

chicken feed, please call me and I will collect. I know this would really make him happy! On pulling off, the inadvertantly left behind boot keys to my car, fell out of the lock – thankfully almost at the feet of Clarence. He made it his business to alert me and return the dropped keys. A Busy 2011 for Lunchbox Theatre

The Lunchbox Theatre team has entered 2011 with great enthusiasm, ready to bring a wide range of theatre and performance events to the Garden Route. Our Young Actors’ Theatre Academy classes, for primary and high school learners, kicks off again on January 26th. These extra mural classes offer loads of opportunities for young actors to learn more about theatre and get a chance to perform on stage at the Whitehouse Theatre. Our very popular ‘Whale Show’ is going places this year. We have teamed up with The Orca Foundation to roll out a series of shows in Garden Route schools. The Whale Show will also visit the KKNK festival in Oudtshoorn in April and the Grahamstown National Arts Festival in June/July. We are busy creating a brand new show with Eden to Addo Corridor Initiative that will raise awareness around biodiversity and the importance of natural corridors. This show will tour to the Langkloof in May. We are looking forward to another year at the Pick n Pay Young Oyster Festival in Knysna in June/July where we perform a number of shows and run various workshops with the kids. Tshisa Talent 2011 is waiting in the wings. We are expecting confirmation of this year’s talent contest, skills development and job creation project pretty soon, so keep your eyes peeled for more info. Our Lunchbox Theatre website is just about ready for you all and we’ll let you know when it’s online. We are currently interviewing potential office managers and are very excited to be bringing someone on board to assist with the growth of our organization. Local Artists Entertained at the ANC 99th Birthday.

On Saturday 8 January KwaNokuthula was a place to be as all the ANC Bitou Sub Region Branches were gathered at Simunye Centre to celebrate the 99th birthday of the African National Congress The stage was decorated with traditional ANC colours and like in any other birthday there was a cake also designed in ANC colours. Among the dignities there was regional secretary Mputumi Putco Mapitiza, Bitou Executive Mayor Lulama Mvimbi and all the ANC structures that included ANC women`s league that were also in their party colours with beautiful shirts and dresses. Opening and welcoming of guest was done by Lulama Mvimbi who said Bitou must give ANC a very good present by making sure that in May they win elections. It will be the biggest event considering the fact that communities will decide on the leaders, he encouraged people not to fight for positions. The losers must be brave enough to congratulate the winners. Putco Mapitiza said people must attend meetings whereby members in communities will select candidates who will stand as potential councilors. He also warned people about the tendency of not registering for elections as they had voted in the past years and end up not appearing in the voters roll. Shaun Lose the youth league spokes person was welcomed by a vibrant struggle song from the young people. He said young people will go and vote because they would have been part of the process of electing councilors from the start, he also welcomed young people who came back to the party and encourage them to join youth structures and work hard to build the youth league, defend the ANC and unite community. The entertainment was provided by local groups such as Iphupa theatre group that performed gumboots dance, Lizo Kosana sing a popular opera song called “you raise

me up”. Durban power performed a dance followed by Plett kings of Pantsula dance Slow Poison with their sketches. There was also a talented gospel artist many knew him from his performances that usually take place next to KwaNohuthula taxi rank ( Siyabulela Kwintini), Singobani Gospel Group lead by the legendary Thelma also performed followed by Nicotee who performed his new kwaito song called Izandla ziygezana featuring DJ Menzaizo who also produced the song. Unleashed also performed followed by Sekshin then DJ Mjilo played house music. What a great platform for the local artists. Thanks to the event organizers for giving the artists as much opportunity as they can to perform. Hoping in the future others will learn something from this event. Yedwa Mayila. Snippets for the Week

Thank you so very much to the public, who keep supporting our Sterilization Project. We are so grateful for all the donations we receive and only with your help, we are managing to keep the Charity Shop fully stocked. Thank you also, to all our regular shoppers. We are able to sterilize on a daily basis and manage to reach our targets every month. We still have a few dogs & cats needing to be spayed in New Horizons and Kranshoek, but I am happy to say that the majority can no longer produce any litters. This has made a huge difference to the condition of the dogs, as well as reducing injuries caused by dog fights. We also have no more unwanted dogs in these areas and this has fortunately reduced euthenising. Of course we will always have the odd person who thinks it's just fine to tie up a 6 week old puppy on such a heavy chain that he cannot move. His water bowl was also out of reach and he was starving. His homemade kennel had no flooring - only sand. By rights, this puppy should be re-homed, but the problem we have is that
