Some shops are beautifully decorated and Marine Drive is looking good in its South African Colours but could do with a little more festivity, as could our Main street (What happened to the fun “Welcomes” in all the different languages that were in Marine Drive?) Bitou Continues Annual Talent Search
For the second year running Bitou Tourism and Lunchbox Theatre will collaborate to promote and develop local artists by providing amazing skills development and job creation opportunities. The Bitou Performance and Creative Arts Showcase (PACAS) offers local artists a chance to compete for the coveted title of PACAS ‘Performance Artist’ or ‘Creative Artist’ of the year. Last year saw winners Slow Poison and Donald Lourens walk away with some fantastic prizes. This year, the competition presents budding artists with even greater opportunities. After an initial audition process, selected artists in the various categories will showcase their works at special events hosted in their communities. The winners of these showcases will then battle it out during the Main Street final set to happen around the time of the FIFA 2010 World Cup Final. The winners in each category will receive a range of prizes from local businesses. Some of the exciting additions to this year’s competition include training workshops focussed on developing artistic, performance and business skills. These sessions will help to improve the artists’ chances of creating a sustainable future from their art. In addition, a Bitou Artists Database will be created to promote these artists to local businesses, event organisers, restaurants and hotels. This database will be a fantastic chance for the artists to market themselves and their art to not only locals, but also further afield. A Bitou performing artists collective will be created and registered with the Performing Arts Network of South Africa (PANSA) and will offer members advice, tuition, courses and other wonderful opportunities. According to Bitou Tourism CEO Dianna Martin, this is a brilliant opportunity to showcase artists in and around Plettenberg Bay. “We would like to invite all interested parties to become part of this initiative, which will enable us to create a pool of professional talent from our town and surrounds. Letter via the Editor Hi, I'm Vic Cockcroft and I intend travelling to Hwange game reserve in Zimbabwe in July to ride the “Pumping Legs for Water” – l00km Hwange Adventure Cycle Ride which takes place within the Hwange game reserve. The event is orgainised to raise funding for much needed projects within the Hwange game park. The funds raised last year, US$6000, were allocated as follows: 'US$4000 toward the purchase of a much needed vehicle for Gary Cantle, who runs our ten project in Hwange National Park and US$500 to the scooping of six pans on the Zim Sun Estate: the balance we have held in reserve for when we start up the pumps in the next couple of months. A big thank you to the 47 cyclists who took part – what a great effort it was by all, so too we thank their sponsors and Parks for giving permission for the ride to take place. As the ten pan project is ongoing and needs a great deal of funding, we appeal to our cyclists once again to take part in this years event -

Letter via the Editor I am concerned that this fabulous world Cup 2010 has very little support from our council. The Woolworth's,Pick and Pay and Checkers have made an effort with staff in the Bafana Bafana T.Shirts plus some decoration of flags in store but, the Town has little or no dressing for this wonderful occasion. Surely we should have flags flying all down Marine Drive, Main Street and Market Square. Lets get into the mood and show support for our National team and visitors. It will be 50-100years before it comes this way again We may not be hosting any teams but, being a holiday town, I am sure we are going to have some spin-offs with schools on holiday throughout the playing weeks. There is no vibe in the town as yet.

Wittedrift High School held its annual Senior Speakers’ competition in Wednesday 5 May 2010. Once again there was a large number of contestants. The judges were very hard-pressured this year! The competitors provided a wide range of truly thought-provoking speeches. This school really is an extensive source of HUGE talent! The confidence and skill displayed by each and every speaker was simply awesome. Our congratulations go to all the competitors - you really gave of your best and provided us with a memorable evening! Kranshoek Soup Kitchen
The Kranshoek Child Welfare South Africa or “Kranshoek Soup Kitchen” is a registered welfare organization that was adopted by Round Table Plettenberg Bay 255 as a major ongoing project. They provide a daily meal to the homeless, elderly and children from the Kranshoek community. For many of them it is their only meal and the building provides their only shelter during the day. They depend solely on public donations and funds generated by doing basic handwork that is sold back to the community. In 2005, the Soup Kitchen received funds from the national lottery to start up and operate their facilities; however they are now on the back-end of those funds. Plett Round Table decided to help by extending their building by 30m² to include new separate toilets, a bathroom, a workstation room, a sickbay and a covered veranda outside to provide some shelter during rainy and sunny days. The estimated bill of quantities for the project came to a total of around R70 000. Very fortunately, Round Table Belgium were looking to donate €5000 to a worthy project and after competing with numerous other contenders, Plett Round Tables presentation for the Soup Kitchen Project was chosen as the best. Two members travelled to Belgium to meet the delegates and collect the cheque at the worldwide International Round Table Meeting. Several of the Round Table members have endeavored to get the bulk of the building material free of charge, to reduce the cost of erecting these facilities but the donation received was still €600 short of target, so any contribution from the community would be greatly appreciated! The project is now well on its way and the building is up to roof height already. This would not be possible without the members dedicated time and effort and the help of the sponsors. The Soup Kitchen will change the lives of over 250 people on a daily basis. What is the Iron Man & what does it entail?
We asked three of our Plett Athletics club members who recently completed this grueling and amazing feat! Lisa Gower, Duncan Brown and Kevin Hurwitz all completed the IRON MAN on the 25th April 2010 in a total of 14h49, 15h37, 11h28 respectively. The Spec-savers Iron Man is a yearly event held in Nelson Mandela Bay and it consists of a 3.8km Swim, 180km cycle, and a 42.2km run – clearly, not for the faint hearted! Lisa Gower and Duncan Brown (owner of B.I Kwik Spar), competed under the “Ironman 4 the Kids banner (IM4kids)” which is a charity that raises funds for various children’s homes. Last year Duncan raised R57k for Sabrina Love Foundation with the help of individual pledges and a R20k contribution from IM4the kids. This year the IM4Kids charity raised R1.060 million which will be distributed to different children’s homes in PE. Kevin Hurwitz says this of his experience; “the human brain forgets...even though I had completed the race twice previously, one forgets how tough it is. I thought I was in control then on the second lap I started to wonder if I would have the stamina to finish. One relies on one’s deepest source of strength to get you through. Nutrition is everything! Training for an Ironman race is intense – it’s not the kind of race that you rock up to unprepared. The distances are too long. The difference in training can mean the difference between really enjoying the experience and hating it. There is a lot to enjoy and it’s a world class event supported spectacularly by Port Elizabeth residents. Anyone can do this race, I am convinced of it - you need two things - commitment to training and a proper diet. More than anything Ironman is a life-

It changes you!” Duncan shares his experience; “Any cycle of over 100km is daunting but with great weather, so little wind and awesome support from the locals, one gets through it. I experienced some mechanical issues after 50km as one of my bike gear cables snapped leaving me with only half my gears with which to cycle 130km but fortunately this did not affect me too much. Running the marathon after 9h30 minutes of racing is probably the hardest part of the day as your legs are pretty shattered at this point but it gets easier after the first 5 to 8km. I knew I was going slowly when I couldn’t keep up with people who were walking! The roads are lined with supporters shouting your name (it’s printed onto your race number!) and that keeps you going! There can be no better feeling than walking down the finishing "chute" which consists of a red carpet, massive big screen and grandstands of spectators. As you approach the finish line the announcer shouts out "DUNCAN, YOU ARE AN IRONMAN !". I got the opportunity to finish with my older brother and walking down the red carpet with him and my daughter was very special. It is almost unbelievable to think that the winner this year finished in 8h20m and I still had 20km left to complete on my bike and a full marathon to run! Will I do it next year ? Absolutely not! ... maybe in a few years time ... possibly the year after next ... maybe I will decide later this year...oh okaaayy I will do it again next year! What a busy weekend it was the past weekend as it started with Amazion Gospel Festival that was held at St Monica’s Church on Saturday hosted by Bitou Media Music Production. It was the best opportunity for the Iosac Zion Churches to showcase Amazion music, the likes of Reformation Zion Church choir that is going to host a concert on the 29th were there performing the popular zion song “Yona Mani”, Asijiki Gospel Group from Bossiesgif made their mark with a hit song Sizowanyathela Amadimoni, Messangers of God sang songs from Kana the former Real Singers leading vocalists and keyboard player who also played keyboard for many for many performances that afternoon including the young lady who stole the show Nokubonga, what a voice in this talented girl whom I think needs somebody to coach and take care of her life and God given talent. She performed Alikho igama lakho and Nahla Nkosi with a vibrant beautiful voice that can turn her life for better given a chance in the tough music industry and Nazareth Apostolic Church in Zion also performed accapella in the evening. I am hoping it was not the last time such events take place as it gave church choirs an opportunity to shine. The same evening I attended Miss and Mr OB FC, the most successful young team in the history of Plett soccer. Because of its success they managed to pull a house that filled SImunye Hall to capacity where beautiful ladies and handsome guys walked the stage, with local dance groups that include the usually suspects my Kings of Pantsula and Sketches Slow

On Sunday evening I attended the most anticipated event “Night you’ll never forget” by Bitou Kika Opera Monstrances. It was indeed a night that will never be forgotten by all of those who were there as it was one of the best shows by local groups. The pianist and vocalists complimented each other very well in songs like Pie Jesu, Unchained melody, Time to say good bye and Mike and Mbulelo’s duet blow me away in a Xhosa song Emoyeni wam. AIRPORT There has been a lot of media coverage lately regarding what’s going and what isn’t going on at Plett Airport. As a local tour operator, this often necessitates collecting pax that arrive on charter flights to Plett airport but it is not the first time I have been asked the question “Is this Plettenberg Bay?” Reason being that the airport sign was removed by a previous ‘so called tenderer’ a few years back - who has since left Plett but the sign was never replaced. One would imagine that with the employees at the airfield, someone might have noticed the lack of an airport name. 2010 is here and there are a few flags around town, but how many overseas visitors who are expected to arrive by air, would like to know and possibly have a photograph with the Plettenberg Bay sign in the background. There is all sorts of paving being done for car parking and the general cleaning up of the area so why can’t something be done about a sign? Make’s one think, doesn’t it ? P. W. Logan.

The memorandum of understanding was signed on Friday by Mr Rashid Kahn and our municipal Manager Lonwabo Ngoqo. Our executive mayor shared how Water has always been a big issue in Plett. Desalination as an extra source of water has been in debate for the past 15 years and even earlier. An investigation was done in 2004 but the costs then were just exorbitant, so it was put on hold… With the severe drought we now urgently need an extra source of water and we are most grateful that we have been given a grant of R20M from National Government through the Department of Water Affairs for a Desalination plant. The other major concern is the battle to clear alien vegetation which is using much of our fresh water sources. Mr Khan congratulated Bitou on achieving Blue Drop status for its water and being the 3rd best in the entire country. A wonderful achievement ! He said that our Green Drop status was also good at 78%

( this is the status for the sewerage water). We have also managed to bring our water consumption down by 40%. It is important that we look at supply of water at all levels and that the desalination will only be supplementary when needed. He also promised to match R1 for R1 on any comprehensive alien clearing project Bitou embarks on which will release more surface water. Ms Pumla Ngqumshe head of the local Department of Municipal Services and Infrastructure development introduced Consultants from SSI and Aurecon who gave an update on the process, proposed plant’s location and specs. After investigatging a number of alternative sites, the position decided on is the tennis court of the Beacon Island (which is municipal land) A Marine Specialist is advising on the dispersal of the brine into the ocean and lessons have been learnt from Sedgefield. The 3 building is to be designed to enhance the area and will be aesthetically pleasing to fit the sense of place. Glass panels will be incorporated so that visitors may see some of the processes. It is hoped that the plant will be up and running by the end of October 2010.

In the day she carries the responsibility of a mother, and in the evening she walks in the footsteps of Jody Williams Marcha has got a big dream for the future but sometimes she gets pulled back by her circumstances. She lived in various small rooms and shacks with her family and never had the opportunity to have singing tuition. Her raw singing talent was discovered and soon she found herself on singing in front of a variety of audiences from Super sterre and schools to the Zola 7 Show in Knysna, 2010 World Cup Soccer event in George and Churches. Being part of the television program, supersterre on SABC 2 has given her the opportunity to further develop stage performance and to be exposed to the right people in the music industry. She has made it to the Top 6 thus far and has earned favor with many, young and old. Marcha, who has a dream to study music after school, is currently a grade 8 learner at Soa Bras High School in Mossel Bay. We are very proud of her and would like to help her pursue her passion. We would like to promote Marcha in any possible way so that we can create more people to vote for her in order to win the Supersterre Competition.
