VACANCY: MAINTENANCE LABORER Applications are required from qualified candidates for the above position:
Main duties include: Daily cleaning of men’s ablution blocks. Removal of refuse from the camping area and chalets. Repair all electrical appliances in the chalets and maintain them to be in good working condition. Replace street light bulbs and attend to any other lights on the Resort. Cleaning of the swimming pool and check water level of the Resort reservoir. Continuous maintaining of the chalets. Painting of chalets, ceilings and buildings. Cleaning of storerooms and workshop. Maintaining of boats and canoes Ensure that all safety rules and regulations with regard to the Health & Safety policy are adhered to. To perform any other duties as the operational need of the Employer may requires.
Required skills, knowledge and personal attributes Requires building, tiling, painting and plumbing skills to perform relevant maintenance work. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Be able to work under pressure. Ability to deal with a variety of people in a customer orientated, friendly way. To be able to work on your own but also be part of a team. It will be to your advantage to have a driver’s license. It will be to your advantage should you be familiar with the operating and maintaining of boats and 5hp engines. Fin Profiling As most of you already know, the waters surrounding Plettenberg Bay are abundant in marine life. What you may not know is that many of these animals are seasonal – they only visit the Bay in certain seasons and certain months each year. To find out when these animals visit, pictures are taken of their dorsal fin, or of distinctive markings on their head. The dorsal fin on these whales and dolphins are as unique to each animal as fingerprints are to each human being. The exception to this is the Southern Right Whale, which doesn’t have a dorsal fin, but instead can be identified by the callosities (calluses) on their head, the pattern of which is also unique to each Right Whale. Once there is a sufficient amount of pictures of the animals (multiple years worth), the photos can be matched up by these defining characteristics to see when these animals visit out Bay.

What a wonderful welcome we were given by Nico Oosthuizen (Senior Forester), when a group of five of us arrived unannounced - at the Forestry Station in Harkerville, to walk the Sinclair Trail to see the Sequoia Trees that were planted there in 1925. Nico's enthusiasm for his job, his care and his general air of bon -homie set us up for a marvellous walk along this gentle 9km trail (each way) to see the giant redwoods. A thoroughly good time was had by all, and I can only recommend this walk. There were dozens of different types of fungi to admire, and of course walking in our indigenous forests is always a joy. NSRI to the Rescue STATION 14 Plettenberg Bay: Sea Rescue – Plettenberg Bay – Tuesday, 14 June, 2011: Two British ladies rescued from Robberg Hiking Trail. Ray Farnham, NSRI Plettenberg Bay station commander, said: "At 18h55 (Tuesday - 14/06) NSRI Plettenberg Bay volunteers were activated following reports from local Police that two British tourists had wandered off the hiking trail at the Robberg Nature Reserve and lost their way and they required assistance to get back to safety. "The two British tourists, female friends, Margaret Pilling, 65, and Jean Scurrah, 59, both from Yorkshire, United Kingdom, on a holiday touring South Africa together, and staying at a hotel in Knysna (for a few days before continuing up the Garden Route scenic drive towards Port Elizabeth) had decided to go for a walk on the Robberg Nature Reserve Hiking Trail today and during the walk they appear to have wandered off course causing them to lose their way on the hiking trail and while searching for the hiking trail the sun set causing them to make the conscientious decision to call for help rather than trying to get to safety on the trail, unfamiliar to them, alone in the dark. "Once they had reached the rescue authorities on the phone (a task which took about two hours and included phoning the one ladies son in the United Kingdom in their efforts to raise the alarm) they were ordered by rescue authorities (through an intermittent weak cell signal, mostly by sms) to stay where they were and although it was not exactly clear to the rescuers where on the Robberg Hiking Trail the two ladies were a search and rescue party was activated. "The SA Police Service, NSRI Plettenberg Bay volunteers, a Metro EMS rescue team and Medlife Ambulance Service were activated and both ladies were found safe at around 20h50 at a hut at Point 14 on the Robberg Nature Reserve hiking trail and they were both escorted to safety (to the Robberg Nature Reserve car park) by the rescue team.

The adrenalin fuelled spectator event of the Pick n Pay Knysna Oyster Festival; The Waterfront Rush is back on the calendar with a splash championed by new title sponsor Hansa. The Knysna Quays Waterfront will again be a focus of attention for the last 3 days of South Africa’s biggest sports festival when it hosts the 5th staging of this multi-sports extravaganza. “The Waterfront Rush is to Multisport what Pro 20 is to cricket,” says event director Mark Collins from Magnetic South and with the total prize purse for this year’s event being doubled to a whopping R20 000, he is expecting a rush for entries from the country’s most explosive all terrain athletes. The Hansa Waterfront Rush is a race against the clock over an obstacle course setup on or above water. It takes the average participant 12 minutes to complete the course and each entrant gets two chances to post a time during the first 2 days of the event. The participants with the fastest 8 times go through to the knockout final rounds on the Sunday. “The real rush,” says Collins “is from the spectators who clamber for a spot on the quayside to catch a glimpse of the high stakes face-off.” The Waterfront Rush, which has been dominated in the last 3 events by extreme kayaker Frenchman Oliver Feuillette, has never been won by a Southern Cape local. Martin Frazer Mackenzie has come the closest to achieving local glory when he reached the last round in 2008 only to be piped on the sky wall by the insuperable Frenchman in the final.

The past Saturday the 11th June was one of the important day in the history of the country with two reason, it was the funeral of a great heroin, the mother of the nation, Mama Albertina Nontsikelelo Sisulu who died while watching TV on Thursday he 02nd of June at the age of 92 . Mama Sisulu will be remembered with her role in the anti -apartheid struggle; today we enjoy this democracy because of those who like her as she committed herself for us to be free, may her soul rest in peace. Also on Saturday it was the first anniversary of a once in a lifetime event, a first ever soccer world cup in our African soil which will be a story that will be tell to the generations to come as the miracle, whereby Africans regardless of their skin color had gathered to gather to celebrate, support and enjoy the beautiful game of soccer. Off the Hook Paddle
Wayne Craig reports: All I can say is what a beautiful paddle we had. The route took us from Witterdrift along the Bitou River through "A couple of interesting tree blocks" into the flow of the Keurbooms river. The start was slightly delayed because of the level of river level. I must confess and say that it was the first time I had paddled this route and not the last time. It is so beautiful and it is on our back garden. Back to the race. The front bunch of Wojtek, Stef, Stuart and Gabriel raced hard and even took a little portage which was out of bounds. However due to the nature of the rules these guys had to down a HANSA for their sins. Stuart Hyde eventually won with a boat length over Wojtek followed by Gabriel and Stef. The doubles was won By Alexis and Dave followed by Owen and Rob. Our kids of the future were there in full force and thank you Knysna Canoe Club for bringing them through. The guppies race was done on the Keurbooms and was a 3 km lap course won by Daniel van Wyk. The short course was won by the New wonder paddler Michaela Beers (trained by Michelle Eray). I was really impressed by her paddle and one for the future for sure. Everyone enjoyed a Burger from offthehook and a nice cold Hansa. The kiddies were treated to nice goodie bags. Thanks must go to the following: Offthehook Seafood café, Hansa and the Angling Club. Our helpers on the day; Louise, Bura, Malcolm, Heather, Neal (course director) and Darron for helping with lifts. WATER RESTRICTIONS The good rains during May and June 2011 have replenished our water resources to a satisfactory level. Keurboomsriver is flowing well and the Roodefontein dam’s level is 100%. The purpose of this notice is to inform all consumers of municipal potable water that restrictions on usage are formally lifted. Residents are however still encouraged to continue with the good water management habits and practices already achieved previously. Users are also reminded that saving water has become a priority for the Bitou Municipality and residents are urged to be mindful of using this precious commodity carefully. Residences with boreholes are encouraged to use borehole water for gardening purposes instead of purified water and grey water must be used where possible. Saving water is an excellent way to show that you care and are willing to do your bit to conserve water and teach our children to save and to create a water wise generation for the future.
