Tel 044 533 0124 United Church Choir launched their first ever album
United Church Choir a local gospel group from United Church in Zion under Rev. D Ndzongo has been exciting for a while although it has never gotten recognition as they participated in community events. Last week the group completed recording their first ever album at Moberg recording studio in King WilliamsTown, The album has 10 songs and is called Ummangaliso. It will be released on the 15 of September and launched in the United Church in Zion conference that will be held at Queenstown. In October there well be a formal launch for the local supporters here in Plett. United Church Choir is in negotiations with Revolver records, a Bloemfontein based company as well as Uncedo Taxi Association for a distribution deal. They would like to express a word of thanks to Mamu Lucky of Lucky’s Buy and Sell in Kwanokuthula for sponsoring the project, Chuma Communications for administration assistance and everybody who’ve been involved during the recording of the album especially Rev. D. Ndzongo, his wife and Mrs Mdlelani Ffor more info please call 073 723 4824 or 074 100 7774. Last Saturday a Plettenberg Bay boxer Sizekile “ Accident” Nkolose

was also fighting in PE, where he won on points against PE based Asanda Jacobs, a fight that left Gcobani Tom, Plett promoter and boxing coach angry as he felt like he had been robbed and used by PE promoter Nofoti of Rainbow promotions who had promised to use his inexperienced Sizekile against a boxer who has the same record as him, but all of a sudden she gave them a much experienced and matured fighter which was a risky move for the local fighter. PLETT MOVIE HOUSE INCEPTION NPU 13 146 MIN (FRIDAY 20H00 SOLD OUT) Action, Thriller Chris Nolan spent nearly ten years working on the script for this well-rated mindbender. It follows a young man, recently widowed, who specialises in stealing ideas from people's dreams. He is now offered a lucrative job: the chance to do the opposite and instead to plant some ideas in the target's mind, while he is asleep. He assembles a team to help him, but they encounter unexpected challenges leading to lots of action. At time of writing, the film comes in No 3 on IMDB's Top 250 CAST: Leondardo DiCaprio, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ellen Page, Tom Hardy, Ken Watanabe, Dileep Rao, Cillian Murphy
SHREK – FOREVER AFTER PG - 92 MIN Adventure, Comedy, Family Shrek has settled down to married life with Fiona. The triplets are a year old now, and life has become a boring routine. Rumpelstilskin offers Shrek some hope: a return to his carefree days, in return for one day of Shrek's life. Unfortunately Rumpelstilskin picks the day Shrek was born, meaning he does not exist, and no one knows him. With only one day to get a kiss from Fiona to break the spell, Shrek has his work cut out convincing his friends that they are his friends.
Voices of Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Cameron
Diaz, Antonia Banderas, Julie Andrews, Jon Hamm, John Cleese, Craig Robinson
THE A-TEAM - PG 13-117 MIN (FRIDAY 20H00 SOLD OUT) Action, Adventure The big-screen version of the famous TV series features South Africa's Sharlto Copely as Murdoch. As per the series, four army veterans are falsely convicted of a crime they did not commit. They break out of jail and go underground, trying to clear their name while at the same time helping other people in trouble, and managing to stay one step ahead of the assorted law officials after them. Expect plenty of explosions. Cast: Liam Neeson, Bradley Cooper, Jessica Biel, Quinton 'Rampage' Jackson, Sharlto Copley, Patrick Wilson, Gerald McRaney

Organic Gardening Organic farming is both an environmentally friendly and sustainable way of producing food. No pesticides or artificial fertilizers are put into the soil which preserves the quality of the soil for future generations. Not only is organic produce a healthier option to eat but it generally provides a greater number of jobs. The Orca Foundation in cooperation with Lello has launched a programme which allows people from local townships to learn and develop their own gardening skills in order to start their own gardens. The scheme has proved very successful and the results are certainly something to see. 1. Mnr. Koert en Ettiene Wiese het die span vergesel na die Paarl. Well Done Boys! A short history of the van Rooyens of Plettenberg Bay (part 2)
Cornelis Botha, the first owner of land in the Piesang River valley, Plettenberg Bay, was a sixth generation descendant of the first member of the Botha family, who landed in South Africa in 1685. In 1768 he married Cornelia Carolina du Preez, who died a short time after the birth of their youngest son, Cornelis Johannes (killed at Die Poort in 1802). He remarried in 1781 to Margaretha van der Wat. Jan (Johannes) van Rooyen (“first of the van Rooyen clan to settle in Plettenberg Bay”) was born in 1771 and married Elizabeth van der Wat in 1791. He now was the brother-in-law of Cornelis Botha senior. In 1810, after Cornelis Botha’s death, he bought part of the Botha lands in the Piesang River valley from Botha’s estate. At this stage the Knysna River, in reports, was still referred to as being in the Plettenberg Bay district, but timber and shipping shifted to Knysna after the Podargus broached the passage between the Heads at Knysna in 1817. In 1818 Jan van Rooyen acquired Brakkloof, including the two areas later known as Vygekraal and Morgenson. Jan and Elizabeth van Rooyen had five children: Margaretha (who married Frederik Christoffel Barkhuizen), Cornelis Johannes (who married Maria Jacoba Kapp), Rachel, Hendrik Petrus (who
married Johanna Christina Peo) and Elizabeth Jacomina Johanna (who married Petrus Christiaan Veldman and later Hendrik Willem Smit). In 1831, probably after Jan van Rooyen’s death, the farm was sold to his relatives: Cornelis Johannes and Hendrik Petrus (sons), Elizabeth Jacomina Johanna (daughter) and Frederik Barkhuizen and Petrus Veldman (son-in-laws). Many van Rooyens (almost 30 names are flagged in the family tree) joined “The Great Trek”, when the boers migrated away from British control in the Cape Colony but the van Rooyens of Plettenberg Bay stayed. In 1847 William Newdigate settled in Piesang valley, owner of seven-eights of Roodefontein (renamed Redbourn). His brother George later lived at Ladywood. They also acquired part of the farm Brakkloof from the van Rooyen family. One of the workers canvassed by the Newdigates in England, William Derbyshire, acquired the land at Ganze Vallei which belonged to R van Rooyen for the first part of the century. Three of the eight sons of Robert Cowley, who also started as one of the Newdigates’ workers, married van Rooyen sisters from Rietvlei, near the Bitou River. In 1871 Thomas Bain wrote about the agreement among the van Rooyen relatives. Most of the land was registered in the name Cornelis Johannes’ son, Jan Hendrik Petrus, but belonged to several families. They had a mutual understanding of homestead, garden and land and put aside a portion of the farm for a general commonage. The farm had splendid lands, orchards, gardens and stock. It was well supplied by water from the Piesang River and included the principal landing place in the bay and had a house of business. Many Boers, in the Cape

Colony, resorted to this system, where they got transfer without a title deed specifying land borders, to save survey expenses. A 1874 Deed of Transfer illustrates how this was achieved: A quarter (1/4) share of Kranshoek and a three-eightieths (3/80) share of Piesang River and the adjoining Brakkekloof was transferred from Jan Hendrik Petrus to Hendrik Petrus Lodewyk (son of Hendrik Petrus) and his sons Hendrik Petrus Lodewyk, James Petrus Cornelis, Cornelis Johannes and Johan(nes) Christiaan with joint

Four years later the first erven were bought by Thomas Horn and William and Frederick Harker. Sporadic buying followed but it was well into the first decade of the next century before 52 out of the 54 plots were sold with Jan Hendrik van Rooyen and Hendrik Petrus Cornelis van Rooyen among the original land-owners in the Village of Formosa (continued in part 3 next week).

FAMSA believes that at the heart of a community lies the family. Therefore a healthy family constitutes a healthy community. The family should be a safe place where members can experience unconditional love, where they can learn to handle conflict and manage relationships. In such a family children can grow up into independent, healthy members of society. But, ...... Families are hurting. Due to economic and various social pressures families are struggling and often need assistance in functioning in a healthy manner. FAMSA focuses on counselling namely: relationship, pre-marital, marital, divorce, trauma, grief, illness and any other as required. We also deal with issues such as domestic violence and abuse. Emotional pain is as real as physical pain and requires healing just as urgently. People are often reluctant to ask for assistance with emotional issues as they feel
embarrassed or frightened to be perceived as weak. Yet we all go through times of trauma and sadness where we may struggle to cope alone. At FAMSA we will listen. Please call us on 044 533 0515. PREVIOUS WINNERS OF THE MAYOR’S COMMUNITY EXCELLENCE AWARDS Hilda Plaatjies: Contribution to Health Matters Award Hilda is a dedicated Health Worker always visiting the frail and sick. This she doesn’t only do as part of her functions but also in her own spare time. When there is a need for transport to take someone to the doctor she always offers to help. She consoles, offer advice and more than often also provide a shoulder to cry on for many. She upholds the right to health. Hilda is an example of the caliber of people we need in communities. She is a very shy and humble person and had this to say when informed about her nomination;” I was so surprised to hear that I was nominated. I love serving my community. To win this kind of an award you must be a servant of the people and when serving your people it must be with passion, love and patience. When you persevere there is always an award and the award is followed by great satisfaction for having achieved.”
Tom Jones: Community Leadership Award Tom is a very dedicated person, passionate about community development and a leader sitting in on various committees in his community. He goes out of his way to help others in need, not considering his own needs only. Jones avail himself at all times to anybody r egardless of the time and place, always willing to lend a hand or to give advice. “Jy druk op sy knoppie dan kom hy sommer” “I was surprised and am glad to have won the award. Thanks everyone for the acknowledgement and I would like to encourage other people to please help where they can as well.,” says Jones
Mike Scholtz: Business Legend Award Mike Scholtz is an astute and dedicated business person who is one of very few who, in addition to business interests, can also dedicate time to community development. He works hand in hand with the municipality, business people throughout Bitou (he is the chairman of the Plettenberg Bay Business Chamber) and the community at large. An all-rounder indeed!! Mike amongst his many activities also support and nurture smaller businesses. Being an active member of the ward committee and also serving on the municipality’s Performance Appraisal Panel, leaves one wondering where he gets this excessive stamina and energy from. “It was a nice feeling when winning the award. It is rewarding to know people appreciate what you doing in you community.” These were the words of this stalwart after being awarded this award. WWHAT'S NEW IN PLETT – 16 SEPTEMBER 2010

The P.O.P Column
(Protect Our People) I have no choice this week and have to inform the public in Plettenberg Bay that we have had a major increase in the last two weeks in the House Breaking and theft out of Motor vehicles. The Police have arrested suspects for both these crimes and they still keep being reported. We plead with you to arm your house in the day and night. Make sure you don’t leave unnecessary windows or doors open. Most importantly please Call Us with strange noises like dogs barking at night or anything which seems out of place. Twice this last week people saw things and never called and realized later they should have called. Without information it makes it harder for the police to operate properly. The area`s most hit were Dunes and Poortjies. More Than TEN 10 House breaking cases in the last week.. We also had two in Keurbooms Area and a Boat stolen from Two rivers Keurbooms. I will unfortunately repeat the last bit again from the previous Week. Please speak to your local security company and find out about Your options to arm your gardens. A reminder call if you see job seekers in your areas, Any strange activities we can only help if we know about it. There is no such thing as bad information so please Call the Plett Police 044-5011908/9 for Emergency’s and with any strange activities. Kwanokhutula SAPS Tel 044-501 1936

INTERRUPTION OF THE ELECTRICITY SUPPLY SUNDAY 19 SEPTEMBER FROM 08h00 TO 17h00 Bitou Municipal electricity consumers in Kwanokuthula are notified that the electricity supply will be interrupted for 9 hours on SUNDAY 19 SEPTEMBER FROM 08h00 TO 17h00 for tasks essential to the new 66 000 volt overhead lines under construction in Kwanokuthula only. We regret the inconvenience to our consumers, but we would emphasize that the new overhead line is one of the phases required to increase electrical capacity, which is essential to meet the rapidly growing demand for electricity in Plettenberg Bay. As the power may be restored before 17h00, consumers are warned to treat their supply as live at all times. Due to anticipated difficulties with restoring power supplies from cold, this will be done one area at a time. However, overload tripping may still occur and consumers are asked to assist by switching off non-essential electrical equipment until the supply network has stabilized. In the event of adverse weather conditions on 19 September, particularly high winds, and the planned construction work cannot safely proceed, the electricity supply interruption will be postponed to Sunday 26 September 2010. World Retina Week 20th to 26th September kicks off National Eye Care Awareness Month. Retina South Africa, part of the National Eye Care Forum of major role players in eye care in South Africa is urging all South Africans to get their vision checked during the month. For anyone who cannot afford a full eye test free vision screening is available at any participating Optometrist, by appointment. Early intervention could mean the difference between treatment and severe vision loss. Retinal conditions are one of the major causes of vision loss and some treatments for these devastating conditions have recently become available with many more in development. One of the major causes of vision loss in the over 60’s is Age Related Macular Degeneration – AMD. There is a now a registered treatment for the more aggressive wet form of the disease and these injections into the retina can slow and sometimes even reverse vision loss. Results have just been announced on the successful phase 2 clinical trials to treat the more common but less aggressive dry form of AMD. This trial slowed the conversion of dry to wet AMD by more than 50%. AMD affects thousands of South Africans and

Genetic factors are now known to play a huge role in AMD and according to Dr Jean Seddon of the New England Eye centre in Boston, USA , these factors coupled with lifestyle can predict AMD. Claudette Medefindt Director for Science of Retina South Africa warns that a family history of AMD should be taken very seriously by young people. “We know that smoking, a diet deficient in anti- oxidants, high cholesterol, high Body Mass Index and high blood pressure together with the wrong genes can significantly increase your risk of developing AMD”. Exposure to high levels of ultraviolet light should also be avoided. “What you do in your youth can affect your vision in later WHAT'S NEW IN PLETT – 16 SEPTEMBER 2010

The early symptoms of AMD are grey or black spots in the centre of the visual filed and the distortion of straight lines. AMD causes loss of central vision and difficulties in reading, writing and the recognition of faces. People with AMD soon lose independence and are unable to drive. Vision rehabilitation can help people cope with this devastating vision loss. The side effects of severe vision loss such as depression and visual hallucinations might also need expert intervention. Sadly very few South Africans get regular eye tests and the treatment is more successful if started early in the disease process. Effective and timely treatment coupled with Low vision assistive devices or Low Vision therapy can make a significant improvement in Quality of Life to AMD patients. Anti oxidants can also influence the rate of degeneration in the juvenile forms of genetic retinal conditions such as Retinitis Pigmentosa [RP] Stargardt Dystrophy and other forms of juvenile MD. Researchers have also made huge strides in developing treatments for these retinal conditions and the first ever gene replacement therapy to treat early onset forms of

Then, suddenly, a change! Something shifted unexpectedly. The daily rythm shuddered. Inexplicably, there was a buzz in the air, such as a bolt of lightning after a clap of thunder in a cape storm. Perspiration broke out involuntarily. Change was in the air; electrical. He sensed that even the animals seemed to sense it and themselves looked up and sniff the air for an unfamiliar scent; suspicious of danger. the waterfowl took off in formation with their howls of protest. Then he glimpsed from the corner of his eye the movement. And then he saw it there. Yes, there, where the sun went to sleep every day and had always done in his life time, appeared a new creature. One that in all his years he had neither seen nor imagined in his dreams. But he immediately recalled the one very ancient myth in the folk-lore. It told of a legend of a creature about the size of a sea-elephant but with a big white dewlap, and with moving spines on its side, next to round shapes like hermit crab shells and a face like a raptor. Some Shaman said that pale men-like shapes with golden hair and sky-blue eyes rode on the creature. There was a long forgotten prophecy that they would again return. It had never occurred.

Until now? The creatures he was observing now, for two more had gradually emerged, now appeared far bigger even than a whale. It seemed to walk or even swim above the waves. It even made waves, but seemed to move slowly. It had great billowing white wing-like dewlaps that rode the wind somehow. And what seemed to be colourful feathers streaming from its spines. The new creatures were silhoutted against the dusky sky. They seemed to wobble closer and closer. They where trodding toward the Point where the Bay of beauty began. The excitement was tangible. Curiousity was electrical. Other strand lopers had now seen it too. It was to become a famous day remembered for generations in fables. The dusky evening that the dewlaped-whales-that-walk-onwater were first seen coming from the salty suns sleeping spot. [End of Chapter 1]
