Conservation Corner On the 6th of March, a Blainville's Beaked Whale beached itself on the rocks at the Beacon Island Hotel. The presence of this animal drew quite the crowd and the NSRI were also called to the scene to assist. Unfortunately with cetaceans (whales and dolphins), they are protected species, so with all good intentions, not much can be done with them without the permissions from the relevant authorities. beached itself, it passed away. These situations are extremely unfortunate, but in a way, it also gives an opportunity to those studying the animals to gain more information on them. For this reason, ORCA Foundation assisted the Centre for Dolphin Studies (CDS) and Bayworld with the necropsy to try to determine the cause of death. The animal was a young adult male, weighing in at around 830 kg and just shy of 5 meters. During the dissection, no obvious causes of death could be determined, but we still await biopsy reports from Bayworld. Not much is known about these whales as they are tropical and warm temperate deep see residents and rarely come into coastal waters. Their diet mostly consists of squid and octopus. Their maximum length is 4.9 metres and maximum weight is almost a tonne. According to Dr Cockcroft of CDS, only about 5 of this particular species have ever beached in our area and he has been studying whales and dolphins in the area for over 30 years. Good day everyone and it was a great honour to see our hearty and loyal supporters cheering the boys on “Busy Saturday”. Again I wanna thank you, this time we didn’t disappoint you and we all have gratitude about the results but we remain humble because there is still a lot of work to be done. I’m sure that the burden that our boys are carrying will eventually decrease. Coming to the game, yes we won 1-0 but it was not enough as we should have won by a huge margin but we were not sharp or blazing in front of the goals. Update on Logan van Zyl after his surgery

As most of you know, Logan was born with no smile. At the age of one he was diagnosed with Moebius Syndrome, an extremely rare congenital neurological disorder characterized by facial paralysis and the inability to move the eyes from side to side. What most people take for granted, a smile, my son is unable to show. Logan underwent a facial reanimation operation in November 2011. It was a very long and tricky procedure. Facial re-animation consists of one or two microsurgical procedures that involve connecting a specific nerve in the face from a transferred functional muscle taken from the leg. The nerve serves as an energy source whilst the muscle acts like a motor to create the motion needed to smile. Prof. Psaras, from Greece, is one of only a select few surgeons in the world who are skilled enough to perform this complex surgery. As a person I can calmly relate the experience that Bugs and I went through. But how can I describe the inner emotions that we, Logan’s mother and father, felt? How do I put into words our feelings when we

And when at last you receive news it is to be told that it will still be another two hours before your child comes out of the operating theatre. Your heart breaks as you ask yourself, over and over again, if you did the right thing? Logan was released from hospital after eight days. Although the operation went well but we now have to wait and see if the muscle transplant was a success. On Sunday 14th January 2012 we got our first glimpse of a moving cheek that has never had any movement before. But now, with this small beginning, we knew the hard work had to start: facial exercises or, as we call it, “smile exercises”. What most people take for granted (and sometimes find difficult to give!) our little six-year-old has to learn how to express. This is going to be a tough year for Logan because there is checkup after medical check-up awaiting him. He will also be going through the same surgery on the other cheek, later in 2012. But we are blessed. Not only with the opportunity of his having surgery but with learning how much our families and friends care for us - and show it.

Inaugural (HOG) Rally in Plett

Garden Route Harley Owners Group Despite the weather which was not great for Bikers (but brought Plett much needed rain) the Rally was a great success and enjoyed by all participants. The Garden Route HOG Club area is from Mossel Bay through to Jeffreys Bay The mass ride was cancelled, but as great time was had by all in all the other events. Alan van den Handel said that there were about 120 bikes on site, plus a number of pillion riders. The highlights of the weekend were the ride out to Storms River, to Marilyn’s, who organised a fantastic event. The Dunes were wonderful hosts with super facilities and all the staff giving top notch service. Plett looks forward to hosting this event again.

Robberg Boating and Angling Club Fishing Competition

21 March 2012 The fishing competition was a great success despite the nasty weather during the morning. We had a total of 5 boats with 18 fisherman. In total 29 fish were weighed in. First place went to Glen Julyan with a 2.9kg Bonito and Second to Christy Strever. Robberg Boating Angling Club was yet again able to hold a successful fishing day due to our fantastic sponsors. A braai and prizegiving was held at Bush Pub and enjoyed by all.

New owner for Plumbwell

PLUMBWELL is pleased to announce the appointment of Gavin Fisch as the new owner. Long time local, Vaughn Sparg established Plumbwell in 1992 when Plett was just a small village. During the next 16 years of successful operation, he established an extensive base of satisfied customers, spanning two generations, mostly through word of mouth. In 2006 Vaughn was struck down by pancreatitis. However, he rallied and returned to full health and productiveness. In 2012, with his parental responsibilities taken care of, he is now intent on travelling abroad in search of new experiences. Synchronistically, this intention co-incided with the decision of his lifelong friend, Gavin Fisch, to move to Plett. The combined skills of the two plumbers make a formidable team. Not only is Gavin a PIRB Licensed Plumber, he is an official installer for a variety of brands of heat pumps and is an Eskom accredited, experienced, Green Power Solar Systems installer. He is a skilled new installations and maintenance plumbing contractor with vast experience in running his own plumbing companies in Africa. Whilst now opting for the simpler life, Gavin’s experience in the completion of many large-scale projects including new hospitals, multi-storey buildings, mass middle-income and low-cost housing developments, industrial parks, universities, hotels, high-end housing estates and private homes will stand him in good stead. Historical Society members will miss the friendly welcome of a longserving Secretary-Treasurer when they line up to pay their modest dues at the Angling Club on Sunday morning (25 March). Joan Moubray has been 'allowed' to retire from active participation as keeper of financial and other important records; and after voluntarily providing a variety of front-of-house and behind-thescenes Committee services for anything up to 20 years (nobody, least of all Joan herself, seems to have been counting). The Historical Society was barely 10 years old when the Moubrays (Joan and Bob) chose Plett as their retirement home. Joan was soon snapped up for committee work. She took to it with a will, teaching herself to 'keep the books' to the satisfaction of the accountants; and serving on the VPHS committee for anything up to 20 years (she claims to have lost count of just how many). Says Chairman Peter Tullis: "Over more than 30 years now we have been fortunate to have had a huge amount of voluntary service – inspiring, and then managing what is now approaching a tally of 200 Sunday morning Talks arranged by the Van Plettenberg Historical Society. "Many have helped to make this possible. But surely no support given (and gratefully received) has been more constant or more freely given than Joan Moubray's – or quite as indispensable." As a non- profit and non-governmental organisation PCW relies on financial assistance from the Department of Social Development, however, the subsidy does not cover the running costs of the organisation or the many feeding schemes and child support programmes. In the past the National Lotteries Board has generously funded the organisation and thereby kept its head above water, however, the lack of consistency in terms of amounts received as well as the sometimes extended delays in receiving grants means that as an organisation PCW cannot rely merely on Lotto funding. Leigh Michael Dunn, “our own Plettenberg Bay home-grown talent” and teacher extraordinaire at Formosa Primary School won top honours at the 2012 National Teaching Awards for Excellence in Special Needs Teaching. The award ceremony was held at the Sandton Convention Centre recently Last week this inspirational teacher was honoured locally by Formosa Primary Staff members, the School Governing Body, Western Cape Education Department, Bitou 10 Education Foundation and the press. Elize du Plooy, learner support WCED 4 thanked Leigh for his work. She said that education for special needs has to be inclusive and that Leigh had carved the way with his work. It has put Circuit 4 on the map. James Andrews, Chairman of the Governing Body at Formosa Primary, said that the recognition given to Leigh is a motivation to other teachers. Hilary Matthews from Bitou 10 Foundation praised Leigh for his wonderful service , passion, professional behaviour, and the fact that he always puts the child first when making decisions regarding the work he does. Mr Leonard, acting headmaster of Formosa Primary School, said that they wanted to celebrate and acknowledge the tremendous achievement of Leigh Dunn in the school where he teaches and where the learners inspire him. At the function, there was a super slide presentation of some of the highlights of Leighs experience on the road to winning the award. Leigh paid tribute to his colleagues, saying they all inspired him and that while an individual may win a trophy, it’s a team who win a tournament. Leigh believes that if attitudes are right, there is great opportunity and a great future for education. He says that we should never underestimate even the most challenged of our learners. These are some of the accolades he received: Mr Leigh Dunn is an innovative, passionate and pro-active educator and his teaching impacts positively on learners of the

school. He is responsible for the ELSEN UNIT at Formosa Primary School. Leigh has designed a baseline Assessment for the Unit’s special needs learners. Leigh Dunn is well known throughout the District and has been asked on numerous occasions to share his knowledge and skills within the District. He has also been asked by the Directorate : Cape Teaching and leadership Institute to present on how to teach learners with learning problems to read He uses Arts & Culture and the play element to teach children to count and to introduce pre-reading and pre-writing elements. He makes a huge contribution in the field of learners with special needs which is evident in his work, which he shares with his colleagues and other teachers in the broader education fraternity. He works closely with occupational therapists and specialists. By doing things differently in the community, with NGOs like Born Africa and BITOU 10 Foundation, many partnerships were formed with community-based organizations and non-governmental organizations. Leigh’s love for children and his vision make a tangible difference in the community of Plettenberg Bay and the surrounding areas. Letter via the Editor Stainless Steel Rails on Robberg Peninsula The combined age of my wife and myself is 140 years. We frequent Robberg occasionally for walks, which we thoroughly enjoy. We have in the past found certain stages of the walk difficult and dangerous to climb in view of the rock formations on the one side and the precipice on the other side. We once again went there for a walk over the weekend and were pleasantly surprised to notice the stainless steel rails which were, we understand, erected by Cape Nature. It must no doubt have been an arduous task which they performed, over a very difficult terrain. I would like to thank them sincerely for what they have done to make the scenic walks for all nature lovers so much more safer. Keep up the good work you guys are doing.
