Plett was so thrilled to have the Cell C Cycle Tour of South Africa do a little loop through Plett yesterday. Our local champion, Kevin Evans was in the front pack … Go Kev ! Stage 4 153km – Bloukrans Bridge to George started on the famous Bloukrans Bridge where many bungi jump enthusiasts . They headed from there to Natures Valley and out on the climb towards the N2. Then on to Plettenberg Bay before another climb out and back on the N2 passing through Knysna. At Wilderness the race left the N2 and headed over 3 passes of narrow twisty roads before finishing in George. Today (Thursday) sees stage 5 of 210km from Oudtshoorn to Swellendam. The stage starts in Oudtshoorn and heads on to the famous Route 62 passing Calitzdorp, Ladismith, Barrydale and Suurbraak before finishing in Swellendam. A big welcome to all our visitors. Good to have you in our area. There are lots of lovely suggestions to make your time more special in Plett in this edition of the What’s New. News, Views and more … getting you in touch with our local community. Have a fun filled week in our beautiful Bay.

The Red Shed/ Born in Africa Camp 18-20 March 2011 A total of 54 Gr 4 boys and girls from Crags, Wittedrift, Kransbos and Kranshoek all took part in a weekend filled with fun next to the Karatara River at the Red Shed. The aim of the Red Shed is to provide a safe and positive environment where the children are challenged both physically and mentally thorough a number of varied activities. Emphasis is placed on team work, over coming individual barriers and participation rather than on competition and winning. Jacqui Dodd (owner) and

André Visser managed to put together a weekend program for the children which they will remember for a very long time! Canoeing, forest hiking, obstacle courses, mini Olympics (soccer, volleyball, dodge ball, ketty shooting ect), drumming circles are just a few of the activities which they took part in. Born in Africa would like to thank Jaqcui and André for their hospitality, lots of hard work and their enthusiastic approach. Somehow February has sped by, being 3 days shorter than other months, and here we are again reporting n our activities. We seem to have had a very busy month with many competition and fun functions. Our club singles championships have been completed and our congratulations go to: ladies single champion: Sheila Horn, runner up Glen Dietrich, Gentlemen’s singles champion: Steve Rado, runner up Deon Hugo. Both finals produced exciting bowls and were hotly contested. Sea horse: Winner: Glen Dietrich followed by Nimmo, Sue Broodryk, Jenny Stevenson and Dickson Russell. Our thanks to the sponsors, Rod and Reel, Lookout Deck. The River Café, Island Diner and Scottys. Chicken Thursday brought rewards for: Don Duffus, Maurice Sives, Sue Shhurmer and Fred Broderick. Snippets for the Week Happy to say that we have sterilized almost 60 dogs for the month of February, which in actual fact means that almost 1350 puppies will not be entering this world - in just one year alone! Kwanokuthula is overrun with dogs. There are pregnant bitches in every road, litter after litter of puppies, injured dogs, manged dogs, aggressive dogs, starving dogs. I find this whole area to be completely out of control. The only way forward is to continue clearing one road at a time, but we know that this will take a very long time, and a lot of money. For this reason, we need to keep the Charity Shop fully stocked, as this is the only way we are able to fund this Project. Thank you to one and all who support us with your generous donations. We still have 1 little kitten available for adoption at the shop. She is absolutely gorgeous and is white, with black and ginger markings. Please help me to save her little life. We are removing puppies daily and really need any help we can get with fostering or adopting. Healthy, good looking dogs are also often not wanted and there is really nowhere to place them. It is really time we had a Pound, Kennels and Hospital in this area. Mandy has offered to put up temporary kennels on her property to house the animals needing homes. To complete this project, we are urgently needing 14 treated poles 2,4m x 80mm, 25m Diamond Wire and a Gate. With temporary accommodation, we will be able to hopefully save so many lives. JOYfully Uplifting Community Looking around these days, one can see the high statistics of stress and depression. Few people seem to be laughing or smiling and the majority seem so caught up in resignation and cynisism. Yet we all know the power individuals can have with inspired vision, our very own Madiba is our precious example of this. We all seem to this potential and then we get caught up in all the “Nay Saying”, “it’s just not possible” type of thinking. So it’s no wonder that The Upliftment Programme (UP), a not-for-profit organisation – committed to Sharing JOY is expanding it’s outreach to bring joy not just to the children of Southern Africa – but to the obviously needy adults too. The UP has been actively sharing joy since 2003 – with their main outreach to the children in hospitals & institutions. They have been

training UP volunteer Care Clowns nationwide – who in turn commit to their local hospital/home every week and share joy there with the children, parents and staff. Currently in Southern Africa there are over 75 volunteer Care Clowns, with a monthly JOYful Upliftment of appoximately 3500 people a month. Nicola Jackman, Founder/Che erlady of The UP says; “We’re building a network of JOY activists individuals who are committed to growing and sharing joy with others and anyone can join UP. We are proud to be “yay sayers” and support the transformation of humankind, from very serious, problem focused people – to inspired, solution-orientated and joyfully active community.” This year The UP continues to build the team of Joy Activists, with on-going training of Care Clown volunteers and also Joy Facilitators – to bring JOY (creative games & laughter) to adults too. It is with great pleasure that I have had the occasion to re-visit ‘Miguel’s Restaurant” after its untimely closure last year and to meet with the new owner Candice – a charming friendly warm young lass with a lot of talent. I have been a few times now and every time its been a delight. A splendid new menu with innovative dishes abounds. Presentation is of the absolute top standard and the quality of the food is excellent. The Sushi is right out of the top drawer with exquisite presentation; Veal served in a wild Mushroom sauce, a first for me and for the first time in Plett to be served a “prego” sauce with prawns not from a bottle but homemade and absolutely authentic Mozambique. I wish this young lady everything of the best for 2011 and may she continue in this vein. I will definitely be going back to try other dishes. Denise Tuffin.

On the 16 Feb we waved goodbye to Dom as he boarded the plane in George, destination London for one year. Dj Mavovo aka Xola Shakes Mathyila another one from plett Xola Matyila popular known in Qolweni and Bossiesgif as Shakes come to Plett in 1998 in search of an employment opportunity.
