War on Poverty Review Plett Style
What a joy it was for our town to host the Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe, Western Cape Premier Helen Zille and many Ministers, Mayors, press and stakeholders on 20th and 21st August 2010. The Beacon Island was the meeting place and it was so good to see so many folk in positions of power to change the future, from various political persuasions, listening to each other and debating in the interests of the people who elected them There were visits to houses in all the suburbs by the Ministers, to garner the situation first hand and to speak to the people. The What’s New’ went to KwaNokhutula where the news of the Deputy President and Western Cape premier’s visit spread quickly and a huge welcoming crowd soon gathered, singing and waving, with ladies and Gents in their colours and traditional wear. There were also those who had clearly the worse for a visit to the taverns the night before and they became very familiar, stepping up to try and hug the dignitaries. The security had their work cut out. One guy called Ms. Zille “Baby” much to the crowd’s delight., and an air of merriment
prevailed. Conditions are really tough for so many of our people. The backyard shacks which are the only homes of so many, are not weather proof. Many grannies have many children to care for due to circumstance. Many do not know where their next meal will come from. The good news is that a number of folk will be given a batch of new houses which have just been completed opposite the sportsfields. Although they are all basically the same, designer Kieth Lurie changed the position of windows, doors and angles to make each a little different. They look lovely and we hope that the inhabitants will be very happy in them. Plett is perceived as a wealthy town, and while a number of holiday homes are owned by very wealthy people, most ofPlett’s people are far from wealthy. The unemployment rate is far too high and the average income is very low. In his report back, Bitou Mayor Lulama Mvimbi shared some of the projects underway including the coming together project, Early childhood development, education bursaries, learnerships and skills transfer, but stressed that there needs to be much more done. Eden District Mayor Adv. Stemmett also shared the programs in the district. 7 of the poorest communities in the Province are in Eden. Both pleaded for positive assistance from Provincial Government. Although there are many challenges, if Government and all the NGO’s, as well as all of our people work diligently together we can win this war!

LATEST...on desalination of sea water. Despite the average rain received recently, the water situation remains critical. Whilst river levels in the Keurbooms river increased allowing a short-term reprieve, the Roodefontein Dam level only increased by 10% to its current level of 20%. Given the average daily municipal use, and in the absence of significant rainfall, the dam will run dry. Water supply remains critical, the construction of the 2Ml seawater desalination plant remains an imperative. An investigation of Robberg Beach planned abstraction beach wells indicated that the low permeability of the sand proved to be unsatisfactory realizing an abstraction rate of only 4.9L/S where 10L/S is needed based on the original design. Consequently, the project engineers are investigating alternative abstraction options to secure the required volume of filtered seawater. At his juncture the Beacon Isle site remains the preferred site for the plant. The unforeseen challenges regarding the abstraction may however mean that the EIA process report is no longer fully appropriate. A reviewed scoping report could trigger the need

The Knysna Seahorse (Hippocampus capensis) is the most endangered seahorse in the world with a limited geographic range to the Knysna Estuary and surrounding areas. It is currently protected in South Africa and can only be collected with a permit. Not much information on distribution and behavior is known about the Knysna Seahorse. However the ORCA Foundation is currently running a project to rear captive born seahorses to a suitable age to be put into an aquarium at 34 0 South. This will prevent further seahorses being removed from the wild so populations can begin to recover.

24 September Surfer’s Ball, Central Beach
An evening of like minded people coming together celebrating the surfing lifestyle in a festive party atmosphere. The average surfer does not like to dress up and hence the dress code –half formal half casual. It is quite comical watching everyone arriving in their part attire. The Surfers Ball is something different from the usual nightclub vibe and obviously its great to party barefoot in the sand. The event was founded by Clayton Bischoff (of Surf Café-fame) & Claire Trebilcock (owner of Tzipporah) who both also run Jamin Surf School. The Southern Storm presented by Hi-tec, dubbed “the Race of the Gods”, is a 6 day, staged trail duathlon that follows a new route every year. The inaugural Southern Storm 2009 which ushered in a new era of staged Storm Racing (Sport Traversing Oceans Rivers & Mountains) was described by hardened multisport athletes as the most physically challenging event ever. The 2010 edition will again start with The OTTER, thereafter traverse semi desert landscapes on the fringes of South Africa’s great interior, before winding its way through magnificent gorges and lost trails in the remote mountain ranges. The race will culminate in the lush coastal landscapes of the Southern Cape. 2010 Southern Storm participants can also expect to be challenged by additional “exploration traverses,” sections of ultra intense adventure interwoven into the trail running and mountain biking routes. An update on our Olympian Michele Eray
Michele ended 2009 with an excellent win in the 50 km Cape Point Challenge surf ski race around Table mountain’s Cape of Storms in a time of 4hrs 26m. This year so far... January 2010 saw Michele competing in the Total Sports Challenge in Kleinmond, winning her individual paddling event, and her team ‘The Total Sports Women A team’ placed 2nd. February, Durban- Michele won the Marine Surf Ski race’s 4 th leg. Feb 27 & 28 Underberg, KZN Michele was unable to defend her title in the Drakensberg Challenge river canoe race, after a number of technical errors. March, PE- The Nelson Mandela Bay Surf Ski Classic, part of the Splash

Festival- Michele won ahead of New Zealand’s surf ski champion, Katie Pocock. April, Spain, The Euro Challenge Surf ski race- Michele came 2nd in the womens race- while suffering from a bad bout of flu! April, Durban, Surf Ski World cupnarrowly missing first place to come in 2nd Michele unfortunately missed the Plett Easter Surf Ski Challenge, due to a private commitment. From Feb to July this year, Michele was the canoe/kayak coach for the whole of the Eastern Cape, doing much travelling up and down the coast and inland as far as Cradock and George. On 12 & 13 June, The SA Canoe Marathon championships were held on the Keurbooms river in Plett. Michele won the woman’s K1 race and was yet again selected for the SA MARATHON TEAM FOR THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS IN SPAIN In September. In June, Michele was in a bad car accident right here in Plett which left her out of training and missing the USA Surf Ski championships. July, Knysna Oyster festival- Michele ran her best time ever in the half marathon and won the K2 canoe event. August, As we speak, Michele is on a jet plane off to Europe for 5 weeks. She will be racing on the Atlantic coast of Portugal on 27 & 28 August, and a week later on the Portuguese Mediterranean coast at the RACE OF CHAMPIONS Surf Ski race. Michele then travels to Ibiza island for the another Surf Ski race before going to Banyoles in Spain for the ICF WORLD MARATHON CANOE championships from 22 – 26 September. As Michele arrives back from Europe she will hop in her car and travel to Cradock for her favourite SA river race, the FISH RIVER CANOE MARATHON on 1st & 2 nd October. Michele is currently the most talented ALL Round Woman Paddler in the World, in Ocean Surf Ski racing, River Canoe, Sprint Kayaking, and Canoe Marathon paddling. by Heidi What a busy, busy, week we have had. The Charity Shop is up and running and looking fabulous. Thank you to everyone who has contributed. We are at present stocked up with a variety of goods, but urgently need to keep it this way. This is an urgent appeal to please donate any unwanted items to sell, in aid of the welfare of the animals in the underprivileged areas, surrounding Plett. We also urgently need volunteers to help with the running of the shop. Should you be able to give just 2 hours of your time, once a week, we will be very grateful. We sometimes have up to 20 customers in the shop at a time, and for this reason we need at least 3 people helping. I am still continuing with the sterilizations. We are at present spaying 12 females a week and are making good progress in New Horizons. A special thanks to all the residents in this area, who have also donated clothing. It is much appreciated. We have been so fortunate to have the perfect location for our shop. Thank you to Attie Coetzee for allowing us to rent this space. BITOU MUNICIPALITY INTERRUPTION OF THE ELECTRICITY SUPPLY SUNDAY 29 AUGUST 2010 FROM 06h00 TO 20h00 Bitou Municipal electricity consumers in Kwanokuthula and Kranshoek and surrounds, are notified that the electricity supply will be interrupted for 14 hours on SUNDAY 29 AUGUST 2010 FROM 06h00 TO 20h00 for tasks essential to the new 66 000 volt overhead lines under construction near Kwanokuthula. We regret the inconvenience to our consumers, but we would emphasize that the new overhead line is one of the phases required to increase electrical capacity, which is essential to meet the rapidly growing demand for electricity in Plettenberg Bay. As the power may be restored before 20h00, consumers are warned to treat their supply as live at all times. Due to anticipated difficulties with restoring power supplies from cold, this will be done one area at a time. However, overload tripping may still occur and consumers are asked to assist by switching off non-essential electrical equipment until the supply network has stabilized. In the event of adverse weather conditions on 29 August, particularly high winds, and the planned construction work cannot safely proceed, the electricity supply interruption will be postponed to Sunday 12 September 2010. We also wish to give advance notice that further supply interruptions are provisionally planned for 19 September 2010. Exact dates and durations will be announced nearer the time. Plett was on the Buzz last weekend as it attracted national media (SABC and different news papers) that were here to cover the visit of the national government officials that included deputy president Kgalema Motlanthe, Minister of Human Settlements Tokyo Sexwale and the DA president who is also Western Cape Premier Helen Zille. They were here to look at the process played on fighting poverty. They visited homes of citizens in our communities. They also officially opened the new housing project in KwaNokhuthula. While in Qolweni the media had a chance to chat with the deputy President whereby questions like “how did he see the role or partnership between government and NGO’s in terms of the fight against poverty and he said government encouraged all the stake holders to play a role on the fight to end poverty and Government is willing to support NGO’s who took the initiative in this campaign. From Qolweni the officials went to New Horizons Sports grounds where the main event took place. After introduction the public was given an opportunity to ask questions regarding their concern or issues about the state of the old RDP houses with cracks and those in the bad area like in water, the new houses that are being given to beneficiaries politically, the issue of bursaries that is given to officials kids, nepotism in terms of employment system, the land issue etc were raised. Bitou Council have billed us for R212.50 per month or R2550 annually for refuse collection which we have never had in our twelve years living in Harkervile. We deal with our own rubbish by recycling compost, burnable, plastic bottles + tins. No discussion document was ever sent to us..and no chance of hearing objections given. It’s people’s choice as to whether they have their rubbish collected or not. An acute rubbish problem certainly exists...in Kranshoek where unemployment is rife so local residents offered their services for picking up litter. Simple to operate say bag of rubbish might attract R5...agree on weight. Oasis Environmental Centre NB Payment therefore will not be made.

RESPONSE TO ARTICLE : CYCLE RACKS OBSCURING NUMBER PLATES In view of the article published on 5 August 2010, which pertains to Cycle racks obscuring License Plates :It is invigorating to note that a sense of responsibility and commitment for the advancement of Traffic Safety by the community prevails. Regulation 35(6) of the National Road Traffic Act 93 of 1996 states that: a) No person shall operate on a public road a motor vehicle on which number or anything purporting to be a licence number which is not applicable to such vehicle, is displayed. b) Of which the license number is in anyway obscured or has become illegible, except if such license number is temporarily obscured or illegible by reason of a cause beyond to contact of the driver of such motor vehicle. It is therefore illegal to permanently obscure a license plate by any object. Our department remains committed in the enforcement of the National Road Traffic Act, Act 93 of 1996. The past week has been very busy at the club. On Tuesday the final of the ladies Handicap singles was played and was won by Angie Everson - well done Angie Hettie Van Tonder was runner-up Wednesday was Personal Trust day and lots of fun was had by all in spite of the inclement weather. Hugh Stacey's team emerged overall winners and there were lots of additional prizes. Many thanks to Johann van der Westhuizen and Personal Trust who sponsored the afternoon. On Friday evening we enjoyed our Dinner/Prize Giving.. Congratulations to all our prize winners - well done everyone! Angie Everson received the Sportswoman of the year Trophy and Barbara Murton received the Most Improved Player award We were privileged to have our two oldest members Henri and Louise Marais presenting the prizes. It was great to see them. We enjoyed a dinner fit for a king thanks to Joyce Biller, Nell Meyer and Lyn Connell. Also thank you to everyone who helped to make the evening such a success including the girls in the kitchen. The AGM was held after bowls on Saturday. Dan Liebenberg will continue as President with his unchanged committee except for Ray Lankaster who has resigned due to other commitments. Thank you Ray for a job well done. There cavorting in the frothy sea were the mystical animals, like hippopotami or rather voluminous salt-water pachyderms. Those that blew smoke like steam into the air. And whose bellows at night echoed up to the stars. Yes, they seemed to play with the sky, eyeball the sun with giant leaps of spray, and greet it loudly with fluked tails. He somehow felt a kinship, an ancient primordial sense of co-existence and non-threatening mutual awareness with them. There were rumours that when the elephants sang in their deep distant voice, that the "salt-elephants" heard them and deigned to reply in turn. Some of the sages and shamans of the clan had recounted that they could feel or perceive the ancient primordial language and participate in the conversation. When a new shaman was initiated or clan chief chosen, they had to perform a duty. A test of courage and bravery, skill, yes, but also a sign that they were favoured. When the filled moon glowered over the sea, they had to swim out to the great rocks of the sharp point that ended the land, the rocks named (whale rock) for the sea-elephants. It was indeed brave, and perlilous. And very cold. There their task was to talk with the sea-elephants. It was said that a true shaman could look into the eye of the creature and bond with it. That they would stare at each other and speak without words, only the vibrations of archetypal sounds. A sharing of the beauty and harmony of life. For here was it thus; a balance in harmony of the five elements. And thus for the people, the whales
