Chatting to a number of people who have been hurt by folk indiscriminately talking about them and about issues that they don’t even know enough about to comment, we thought it may be a good time while the year is still relatively young to remind us all…

WHAT'S NEW IN PLETT – 27 JANUARY 2011

‘n dankbare Ma Polokwane. An elderly Chinese woman had two large pots, each hung on the ends of a pole which she carried across her neck. One of the pots had a crack in it while the other pot was perfect and always delivered a full portion of water. At the end of the long walks from the stream to the house, the cracked pot arrived only half full. For a full two years this went on daily, with the woman bringing home only one and a half pots of water. Of course, the perfect pot was proud of its accomplishments. But the poor cracked pot was ashamed of its own imperfection, and miserable that it could only do half of what it had been made to do. After two years of what it perceived to be bitter failure, it spoke to the woman one day by the stream. 'I am ashamed of myself, because this crack in my side causes water to leak out all the way back to your house.' The old woman smiled, 'Did you notice that there are flowers on your side of the path, but not on the other pot's side?' That's because I have always known about your flaw, so I planted flower seeds on your side of the path, and every day while we walk back, you water them.' For two years I have been able to pick these beautiful flowers to decorate the table. Without you being just the way you are, there would not be this beauty to grace the house.' Each of us has our own unique flaw. But it's the cracks and flaws we each have that make our lives together so very interesting and rewarding. You've just got to take each person for what they are and look for the good in them. SO, to all of my cracked pot friends, have a great day and remember to smell the flowers on your side of the path!

It is amazing how time waits for no man and we are up and running with our Ladies and Men`s Singles Championhips, and league matches are well under way. Our South Green is now in great shape and we had a good turnout for an afternoon of Tabs In, sponsored by Personal Trust on the 11th January. Winner: First: Andre Joubert, followed by Don Ribbans, Glen Dietrich, Robins James, Johann Woods and Erich Nuss. Personal Trust has become our main Sponsor as of January this year. Our thanks to Johann from Personal Trust for a fun afternoon very much enjoyed and generous rewards for good play. A special thanks to Tilly Seligman for her generous sponsorship of the new hand rails bordering the entrance to South Green. These will ensure a safer passage in that part of the club grounds. Beaten at their own game

If ever there was an apt application of the phrase being beaten at your own game then perhaps this is it. Just as organisers are putting the final touches onto the award winning brand new South African invented sports’ first ever 360 ball World Championship to be staged in Munich Germany, feathers amongst the top players have been ruffled as a female player has all but qualified for the A Division finals possibly knocking out even the inventors of the sport. Alexa de Villiers from Knysna is one qualifying game away from being included in the 1st division of the competition finals of the 360 Ball Doubles Player World Championships and if she does so it will in all likelihood be at the expense of one of the Collins brothers who invented the game. As luck would have it she has been drawn to team up with the number one ranked player Nelson das Fontes to square off against the brothers, ranked 4th and 5th respectively, in the last of the qualifying games in Knysna on Friday evening. Ranked 7th she is already in the SA squad for Germany but was expected to play in the bigger and less competitive B division with mostly German and Spanish based players. “Although she was identified as a talent from her first games no one expected her to get near qualifying with the top men,” said the Federations Spokesperson Jude Downing. “The World Championship has no woman’s competition yet, so she just entered the men’s competition.” Downing insisted that the rules for qualifying would be followed regardless of how the other players felt and she would be treated like any of her male competitors. At the moment three of the top five rankings are held by South African players with England and Portugal looking to have one representative in the final each. “It will be very disappointing for either of the brothers if they don’t qualify.” “It’s a historic moment the sport they invented WHAT'S NEW INin PLETT - 27 JANUARY 2011

but I still think that a woman qualifying, if she does, could be great for the sport.” “A lot of people here in Knysna want to see her go through!!” Although the concept behind this sport was invented by the Knysna based Collins brothers many years ago the game has only started being played competitively in recent months with courts being set up in Knysna and Germany. In February the inventers are to be honoured with the biggest award of its kind in the world in Munich as 360 Ball is receiving the overall winner’s prize in the ISPO Brand New Award as the best innovative sporting concept in 2011. Organisers of the ISPO, the world biggest sporting trade fair, are also hosting the first ever World Championships of the Sport. This World Championship determines the best doubles player as the players in each division play each other in a gruelling 15 game contest. The final day of the ISPO, 9th February, will host the sports first ever international challenge match as South Africa take on Germany. The South African team, to be announced in Germany, will be picked from the 11 players attending the finals. Both competitions will be televised.

Nuwe klere plus nuwe skoolopset, skoolhoof plus onderwyser. ’ Ek wonder wie is my juffrou?’ Vandag se kinders is nogal baie selfversekerd. Hier by ons is geduld baie nodig. Maar aangesien die dame skool gee vir die Elstn groep moet sy hope geduld het. Dis nou die outjies wat daai ekstra nodig het. Jenny

Letter via the Editor

Well done Emily Moon Congratulations to Werner and his team. You really did get it right this season. As a local, one of our biggest beefs is that we support various restaurants over the year and when season comes we are pushed aside and treated with disdain, or should I say disinterest. So it was with a certain amount of trepidation that we made several reservations, for a few special occasions over the season at Emily Moon. We were so bowled over by the warm welcome that we received from Werner who greeted us like long lost friends and VIPS.We were given our favourite table each time, without having asked, the service was outstanding and the food was great. To wrap it up, when I thanked Roxy, (the young waitress who had served us) for looking after us so well each time we had been there, she answered "Of course we would look after you Steph, you are "our locals"! What a great attitude, well done Di and Simon you have a great restaurant and a great team. Wishing you a successful and happy 2011 Stephanie Mayne

Singobani Gospel Group

Thelma Dyantyi’s Initiative.

Many people knew the Legendary Thelma Dyantyi from the days of Precious Gospel Group which was a biggest group in Plett, recorded 2 albums. She was also a part of a church choir from Latteday that released an album called Njengo-Daniel. While she was at home with her son Phumelela who is a keyboard player, he suggested that she must start her solo career and record her album and since Thelma`s interest was to develop young musicians she decided to start her new group consisting of young people. She decided to name the group as Singobani meaning “who are we” to start a group. Her aim is to develop all the group members to

grow up and be able to record their own solo albums. So far they have shared a stage with the likes of Andile T, United Gospel Group and they also participated in Tshisa Talent hosted by Lunch Box Theatre as well as their recentl performance in the 99th birthday of the ANC at Simunye Hall and in the official handover of KwaNokuthula RDP Houses. Singobani intend to record their first album in June this year, while Thelma will be busy with her solo project as from February as she aims to be the first artist to use the much anticipated recording studio to be built in Plett. Their biggest challenge are the instruments and uniforms. They have to hire instruments for their performances. People or business es who are interested to support them can call Nozibele Jack at 078 5588 407 or Thelma Dyantyi at 083 6984 310. Those who are interested to join the choir are still welcome but bear in mind that the limited number for their band is 15 members and they are 9 at the moment. Yedwa Mayila.

An open to letter to Kim and others who may share her sentiments... You know I`ve followed your articles over the years. I must say I am worried to say the least. To talk about your pain this way, won`t help. It did not help so far. I mean so many of your negative poems saw the light. And still you are not happy? I want you to be happy. Through my reading of your writing I picked up that you are converted or at least you know about Jesus. He is the only one that can help with any problems whatsoever. How big or how small. The only solution is to pray, talk to God. In church there must be one person that you can have that one on one session with. Talk to your Pastor. Ask your mother to walk that route with you. You must have a friend that is stronger than you that lives by the word of God. You are amongst the Griquas, very set in their ways. There must be one auntie that you can turn to. I don`t know, all I know is that there is a better way. One day you will look back and think, why didn't I just talk to my mother. There is a lot of us out there that had a stepfather. There is a Greater Father than him. And He is in you. Hope the next time you write something again, it will be a more positive you. Life is too short. A What’s New Reader Kim Jones has been writing poetry for a long time, many of her poems have been published in the what’s new in Plett over the years. She has inspired us all when she writes on positive issues (which we have missed lately) and invokes empathy for similar situations when she shares the more challenging aspects of life. We trust she will continue to share her talents with us all. Ed CK NAILS - Acyrlic Dip, Gel, Manicures & Pedicures in Town or @ Your Home. Great affordable prices. BODY STRESS RELEASE Peter & Sandra Gird 082 819 8933 Milk Independent Brand Launches in Southern Cape

A Safe Alternative to Pasteurised Milk

A safe alternative to pasteurised milk, in the form of purified raw milk, under a new co-operative milk brand initiative called Milk Independent, has launched in the Southern Cape. This follows local municipal approval of the use of SurePure processing for liquid purification in dairy, making the region the first to legally adopt this technology for raw milk processing. “The new venture is great news for the dairy industry in South Africa and great news for consumers in the region, who will, for the first time, have access to safe, nutritious and delicious raw milk,” says Milk Independent spokesperson, Stephen Robinson. “This breakthrough paves the way for other South African dairy farmers to independently operate and produce cold-purified milk under the banner of Milk Independent, which uses SurePure photopurification technology to purify milk,” he adds. “And as it replaces the use of heat energy for pasteurization it has a positive impact on the environment too.” The founding co-operative member in the Eden district under the new Milk Independent brand in the region is Andrew Hill from Cairnbrogie Farm in Plettenberg Bay, who was instrumental in bringing

raw milk and sure pure together with this exciting technology. “We are very enthusiastic at being the first to be involved in such a forward-thinking initiative,” says Andrew, owner of Cairnbrogie. “This is extremely exciting for the milk industry, but more importantly for the farmer on the ground. We are sitting in Plettenberg Bay on a world first which is set to be the bench mark in the industry. We are looking forward to helping open up opportunities for other farmers in the region and in South Africa to make this independent initiative a success.” Hill says that Milk independent represents a new way of thinking about dairy production, processing, distribution and selling. “We want to work collectively to ensure that farmers get the prices for their milk that are economically sustainable and that they deserve.” Hill says further that this initiative respects the right of informed consumers to insist on getting the pure goodness of milk as nature intended, without it being over-processed or over-travelled. “It champions the rights of vulnerable consumers to safe, healthy, affordable nutrition. It is not over processed and over travelled milk but safe farm fresh milk,” he adds. “We also provide milk to the neighbouring settlements and we have the unique opportunity in supplying safe raw healthy milk at a good price to the majority population, and this is exciting for the future.” Hill, who is extremely passionate about raw milk, points out that cow’s milk is a good source of proteins and fats, and has been proven to contain important disease fighters like vitamins and minerals, essential fatty acids, amino acids and good bacteria to strengthen the immune system. “However, when you pasteurise milk, the heat destroys some of the immune-fighting properties,” he explains. “Raw milk also contains enzymes, the most important health-building ingredient of all, which are really susceptible to heat damage during pasteurisation.” According to Hill, the cold-processing SurePure system being utilised by Cairnbrogie has little or no negative effect on the protein, fat, lactase or vitamins in milk and, under normal operating conditions, all the goodness stays intact in milk. “It can even be drunk by those who are lactose intolerant,’’ he says. “The other major commercial benefit of the process is that it helps to increase the shelf-life by at least 30%.” Steve Miller, Marketing Executive for SurePure, the company supplying the revolutionary processing system, is excited by the launch. “Our proven SurePure technology is already being used by other industries globally for the photopurification of water, wine, sugar syrups, fruit juices and in the brewing industry and we see great potential for our technology in the dairy industry,” he says. “We’re delighted that a South African dairy farmer and his local municipality have taken this first, bold step into the future of dairy processing.” Hill, too, is full of praise for his local

municipality. He believes that the approval is testament to the forward-thinking and proactive approach from the Eden department of health officials and helps keep SA at the forefront of dairy technology. Those living or visiting Plett will be amongst the first to taste the raw milk, which is available at the Melville Spar in Plett, as well as at local cafés and coffee shops in the area who are using the milk. Milk Independent’s Stephen Robinson says, “As we get buy-in from other municipalities, we hope to have independent farmers across South Africa joining the initiative and bottling under the Milk Independent brand making healthy, safe raw milk a reality for all South Africans in the near future.” For more information visit: www.milkindependent.com SUNDAY LUNCH. Smart Workouts Monitor Your Curves

Imagine having the world's most advanced fitness trainer at your disposal. This trainer customises workouts based on your body structure and endurance and adjusts each exercise machine's intensity based on your most recent progress. It monitors your energy levels and range of motion continuously to ensure you are achieving your personal potential. Then the trainer automatically computes your workout data to produce a progress report, including the number of kilojoules you burned and 3-D anatomical diagrams to show which muscles you've worked and how successfully. This is exactly the role of the CurvesSmart™ personal training system, a new technology pioneered by Curves that offers a customised, individually tailored workout, moment-by-moment feedback and progress reports to keep members motivated while they work out. Knysna is pleased to offer its members this revolutionary equipment upgrade. After a member's personalised profile is determined by a Curves staff member, the member is issued a CurvesSmart ID Tag. The tag is electronically recognised by the monitor at each exercise machine, automatically retrieving the member's profile to predetermine the specifications for her workout. The monitor indicates if her heart rate is in the target range, whether the member is achieving her target intensity level, the range of motion for each repetition and the number of repetitions. If the woman is exercising correctly, all indicators on the monitor will be green. Members are enthusiastically encouraged to "Go for Green!" Following the workout, the system produces a progress report that allows the member to see instantly, and in quantifiable terms, her strengths and weaknesses. CurvesSmart technology offers women the benefits of a highly skilled personal trainer without the expense. It is the world's most

Greenwood Grapevine News

Greenwood Independent School A new year with new pupils, and even some new staff members! A great big, warm welcome to our Greenwood family. We are so pleased to see our pupils back again and a big hug for all our new pupils, especially all the little Grade 1’s. We value each and every family at our school. A quick introduction to Greenwood’s new staff members: In Grade 3 Ingelore van Zyl, a very dedicated and experienced teacher from Cape Town and in Grade 6/7 Jacques Hackart from the Eastern Cape (what a bonus to have a male teacher on the staff as well!). Greenwood is also delighted to introduce our roaming assistant teacher: Michelle van Rooyen. We will also be including Noeleen Strugnell as our part time remedial teacher, whom most Plett people know as an excellent teacher! Sadly we will be saying goodbye to our super sports Coach Jayne MacKenzie as she is moving back to KZN soon – we will keep you posted on the new sports coach!

Louise, the office manager is moving to a new position and we are lucky enough to have Lyndall Hill taking over. Our Preschool has had a little bit of a reshuffle with an official Grade R class. In the past our grade R’s were together with the other little ones following a more traditional Montessori system. Due to the fact that all primary schools will soon have to have an official grade R class, the decision was made to get it into our system earlier rather than later. Robyn Luyt, our fully qualified teacher, is taking that class, while Jeannette Walder and Ingie Lorman will continue with our toddler and preschool Montessori classes. Our Primary School is flourishing under the steady guidance of Principal, Mary Solomon. All our teachers are ready to tackle the new year. The sports field is finished and the new tennis court will be completed by the end of the month. Greenwood now boasts a super new computer lab with the latest technology, and we welcome Candice Ludick as our part time computer teacher! Watch this space so as not to miss out any all the Greenwood activities this term which include our Fantastic Auction, the Opening of our new Fields and our Sports Day. We look forward to a fun-filled year, jam-packed with many magical moments! Should you be interested in applying to Greenwood please contact the office on 044 533 2549 / 0833775761

Bowls Section

We greet you again, trusting that you are feeling on top of the world and ready to take the bowling green by storm! Also thanks to her for sponsoring the supply of Chickens for the competition in February. You are a star,

Phakamisani Primary News2011

Phakamisani primary school started on a good high note, with stationery and textbooks handed to learners on arrival. Educators started on the 17 January 2011 and learners started on the 19 January 2011. 97% of educators attended the school and 100% of learners attended and wore full uniform. The parents witnessed the first day of schooling.

Déjà Vu

We Buy & Sell Antiques, Collectables, Books The Gallery, 8 Gray Street, Knysna. Tel: 044 382 1259

Our preacher evangelist Mr Neshwa blessed the school with wisdom words. He emphasized the discipline and importance of education. He encourages the learners to learn to be future presidents and doctors of tomorrow, education is the pillar to break the cycle of poverty and creates jobs makes the better life for all. Things went so well that most of the educators started lessons after assembly. Learners at the school were allocated into classes, the school issued its roll out plan and educators distributed learning materials. Parents who registered their children, had done that after school. The school was ready to teach the parents we are not allowed to disturb the school during the teaching time. 1505 learners enrolled at school, 25 learners are on the waiting list. It is out first time to have a waiting list in the history of our school. The road is clear for a new primary school to be built by the department of education. The IMG Circuit Team Manager visited our school. They placed strategic plan to solve our problem. They cared about us. Dr Berning played an important role at our school by cutting grass free on the sport field and providing a music teacher. Some of foundation educators attended the curriculum workshop during the holiday. Principal, deputy principals and one HOD resisted to Stellenbosh University for a course of school leadership. The educators and members of the school governing body have been working tirelessly behind the scenes throughout the school holidays to ensure that we have this smooth start on the first day. I praise NGO`s, Bitou 10 Foundation, Municipality, friends of Plett, learners, educators, parents and community for their commitment and dedication to improve the standard of our school. We appeal to all the people of Plett Bay to put education first. The youth must go back to school and old people must go to ABET, colleges, universities etc, even if you are working, you can register to further your studies in UNISA and other universities. People must get skills to lead their community and country, just like China, Japan, America and Britian. We are ready to deliver quality education and educators are all positive to get 50% pass in

literacy and numeracy this year. We are geared up to show the world, we are the quality educators. This year is a year of quality education and happiness. Educators and learners must enjoy life within learning and teaching. The school need love from parents, educators and learners. Love doesn`t need resources. Love and heart can put the level of the school to the sky. God Bless You. X.A. Faku [Principal] SPORTS, NEUROMUSCULAR AND THERAPEUTIC MASSAGE with Rosemary Codron. Tel 044-533 0620/082 369 7219. Youth urged to Register to Vote

The National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) has urged young people to come in their numbers to register to vote in the upcoming local government elections. “Public participation processes are the cornerstone of our young, yet strong democracy. As such, it is imperative for young people to participate in these processes. “This is an opportunity for them to define what becomes of their development in communities through improved service delivery,” said NYDA chairperson, Andile Lungisa. Voter registration weekend is on 5 - 6 February 2011. Lungisa noted that through their activism, young people have the responsibility of ensuring that youth development is accelerated at local government level. They should also take practical steps to ensure public representatives are held accountable, and that delivery continues to improve their lives. “We must continue to do away with the perception that young people are often complacent and apathetic to issues of governance. We strongly encourage young people to register to vote over the weekend of February 5 and 6. When the time comes, they should vote during the local government elections and further strengthen our democracy,” Lungisa said. He also commended government in its efforts to include the youth in fora that mattered, such as the Integrated Development Plans of municipalities. To register to vote, you need a bar coded South African ID book or a temporary

2011 is a significant year… it is the first year of this decade!

God’s Word tells us that “the first governs the rest.” Whatever you do this year sets the precedent, pace and pattern for the next ten years! Now, in the beginning months of 2011, you still have time to “keep first things first” and experience a supernatural release of blessings for your family, your relationships, your career, and more! Proverbs 3:9 reminds us to honor the Lord with our substance and the first fruits of all our increase. God’s principle of the First Fruits offering that provides the foundation and structure for God’s blessings in your life! When we put God first, we are positioned to receive God’s greatest provision, abundance, blessing, and health. NOW is the time to do it! I don’t want you to miss out on your opportunity to experience an entire year of

God’s provision for 2011 -- and for the next decade! God is ready to release his wholeness and joy, restoration, anointing, abundance, protection, peace in your household, victory, success, and provision to meet your every need! In Matthew 6:33, we are instructed to “seek FIRST the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” As you honor and obey God, and sow a First Fruits offering...you position yourself to experience the promise of His provision, protection, blessing and abundance in 2011 - and the rest of the decade! Join me to honor the Lord with your best First Fruits offering -- believing God to pour out His promises for your life through your obedience in 2011 -- by keeping Him “first!” God bless you! Letter via the Editor It is with great regret that I hear that the Plettenberg Bay Central Library as we know it, is intended to be amalgamated with the New Horizons Library in a brand new building yet to be built. I was so upset when I heard this, that I put myself forward to collect signatures in a petition against this impending situation. I am not a member of the Friends of the Library, nor do I have any affiliation whatever with the D.A. nor the A.N.C., nor any other political party. On two separate days I helped collect over 1900 signatures (in the Melvilles Centre), from people from all sectors of our community, and speaking to them, I can assure our Municipality that most of us greet this news with indignation. Another thousand signatures have been collected on an on-line petition base, www.insitesolutions.co.za /petition.asp?submitted=true. One of the most common arguments I heard these days was, "What, when our population of Plett is expected to double within 10 years, our Municipality should be improving and opening more and more libraries, so that our children have more chance with literacy and education than we did in the old days! Where are these people, our councillors, getting their ideas from? We work here in central Plett, and during our lunch breaks we like to use this library here. It is convenient for us members, we like this library here". The facts about local Library Membership are as follows: Plettenberg Bay Central Library has a total of 10,456 members, almost a quarter of whom are children. Kwanokuthula Library has a total of 3123 members, two thirds of whom are children.

Kurland Library (opened in October 2010), has a total of 48 members, half of whom are children. Wittedrift Library has a total of 314 members, over two-thirds of these are children. New Horizons Library membership numbers are not available, because it was decided to close this library during the entire school holidays - who made this ridiculous decision? Should the children rather play on the streets, sniffing glue and getting into mischief? The readers from the different areas have a choice of language, but the vast majority of books read in Plett Central Library are in English; the majority of books read in the Kwano Library are in Afrikaans for adults, and in Xhosa for children; in Kranshoek, Kurland, Wittedrift and New Horizons libraries, the majority of books read are in Afrikaans. Furthermore, figures show that the vast majority of books read from all the libraries were taken out of Plett Central library (77,879 in 2009, and 74110 in 2010), making Plett C.B.D. library by far the most popular and used library in the area. One of the main reasons given by the Municipality for making the decision to move the Central Library to N.Horizons, is that this would be in keeping with the Govts., "coming together" policy. I don't understand the rationale for this, when Plett Central Library in the C.B.D. is and probably always will be, the most popular and most used library in the Bitou Municipality. It is one of the most important venues where all our people come together on a regular basis, through a shared love of reading; I doubt if this "coming together" will continue if the Central Library is moved to New Horizons. I urge the Plett Municipality to re-think and

re-visit this issue. Whereas Mr Verdonk has written a very strong and intimidating letter in defense of the Municipality's decision to move the Central Library to New Horizons, (ref. last week's What's New in Plett), in my view it is definitely a decision which needs further open debate. Nowhere has there been a statement issued by our Municipality to assure us, the public of Plett, Kwano, New Horizons, Kranshoek, Kurland and Wittedrift, that there will be a library in Plett C.B.D. This is the assurance we need from our councillors, that a library commensurate with its membership remains in Plett C.B.D. - for OUR convenience (WE are the ones that have put you in power to represent our wishes). Let's keep this issue at the fore-front of our minds, or else we'll be fobbed off and intimidated. Mothers stand together for the sake of all our kids ! ** all the above figures acquired from the Provincial Library Service.
