Another inspirational poem to inspire us all . This one was quoted recently by our mayor in his state of the town address.

It takes courage

To refrain from gossip when others delight in it, To stand up for the absent person Who is being abused. It takes courage to live honestly Within your means, And not dishonestly on the means of others. It takes courage To be a REAL man or a TRUE woman, To hold fast to your ideals when it causes you To be looked upon as strange and peculiar. It takes courage to be talked about, And remain silent, when a word would justify you in the eyes of others, but which you dare not speak because it would injure another. It takes courage to refuse to do something That is wrong Although everyone else may be doing it

With attitude as carefree as a summer song. It takes courage to live according To your own convictions, To deny yourself what you cannot afford. To love your neighbor as yourself! Have a wonderful week in our beautiful Bay !

What’s on at the Movies?

Plett Movie House TEL: 044-533 3952 SCHUKS TSABALALA’S Comedy, Family Schuks is commissioned by the 2010 tourism body to produce a movie as a visual guide for tourists visiting South Africa for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Schuks and "Shorty" become entangled with and exhausted by the red tape of forming a B.E.E.-compliant company, and decide to produce Schuks Thabalala's Survival Guide to South Africa instead. Schucks Thabalala is a teacher and a tourist guide to a mixed bag of tourists who are genuinely eager to learn about SA, so Schuks and Shorty are only too happy to oblige with a series of hysterical demonstrations of life in SA. Cast: Leon Schuster and Alfred Ntombela

HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON Adventure, Comedy, Animated Set during the age of vikings and dragons, our hero is the bookish son of a viking chief, and as such rather a disappointment to daddy. The vikings are having a terrible time dealing with the attacking dragons, until our hero manages to make friends with one of WHAT'S NEW IN PLETT – 27 MAY 2010

the dragons. This sets in motion a chain of events which will change things between the vikings and the dragons forever. Voices of Jay Baruchel, Gerard Butler, Craig Ferguson, America Ferrera, Jonah Hill, Christopher Mintz-Plasse

CLASH OF THE TITANS Action, Adventure This swords-and-sandles epic is a remake of some tales from Greek mythology. In essence the humans and the gods are at war, and right in the middle is a demigod... born of Zeus, chief of the gods, and a human mother. His main have-to-kill baddies are the snake-haired Medusa and the Kraken, a dreadful sea monster. Expect lots of cgi-based action. CAST:Sam Worthington, Liam Neeson, Ralph Fiennes, Jason Flemyng, Gemma Arterton, Alexa Davalos, Tine Stapelfeldt, Mads Mikkelson

Please note that the banks will not accept a R200 note from 01 June 2010. Exchange any R200 notes that you have before 31 May 2010. Do not except any R200 notes after 31 May 2010, you won't be able to do anything with the R200 note. Customers can only exchange R200 notes at the branch up to R5000. If they have more, they need to go to the Reserve Bank directly. All R200 notes that customers have from 01/06/10, will have to be exchanged directly at the Reserve Bank. You have probably seen the TV program about false R200 notes in circulation, R200 notes not being accepted by some businesses, ATMs dispensing false R200 notes, etc. The Reserve Bank will apparently issue new R200 notes that is more secure.

Thank you

Boxing was one of the greatest well supported sport in Plett as you may remember the local professional boxers of the good old days such as Vukile “The Destroyer” Dano, Mxolisi “The Slow Poison” Sijama, Bongani Kula who made appearance on TV, Mpumelelo Mabhokela, Phumlani, Mphuthumi “Putco” Maphithiza, and Gcobani “The New Bones” Tom whom regard as the best boxer ever to come out of Plett as I also watch one of his fight that I still remember was at Piesang Valley Hall fighting against a boxer from Cape Town. He won it on points although I can not remember the name of the boxer he was fighting with I still remember that is

boxer but already represented Western Cape in SA games last year September in Mafikeng where he came back with a silver medal, Sibusiso “brave heart” Twani who turned professional in 2007 is rating no 9 in SA and stands a chance for challenging in Mini Fly weight SA title. Since there were no promoters in Plett the outside promoters took our local boxers to join their clubs after the local academy developed them as they can’t afford to pay them and sponsor and that influenced the formation of SWD (South Western District) Development Promotion to provide boxers with fights and to bring big Fights involving big name boxers to be hosted in Plett. The first of this kind will be held at Simunye Hall this coming Saturday the 29th of May at 14H00, Admission is R20 adult R10 Children. The 8 bout boxing event will have the main supporting bout of

I just want to give a clue of what a good boxer Gcobani who is afectionately known as Ta Gcogco in the township these days. In the late 90’s Plett experienced the death of boxing . No one knows the reason behind its death, but because of love and passion for the sport Gcobani and the other boxing legends from Plett formed Sonqoba Boxing Academy that had groomed young boxers such as Litha “Bones” Basakabini who is still an amateur

Snippets for the Week ……

by Heidi Because of our fundraiser last Saturday, we only managed to spay 5 dogs last week. A BIG thank you to everyone who supported our movie premiere in aid of the Bitou CVC. Together, we managed to raise in excess of R8000.00. I am pleased to say that with our jumble sales, donations, the movie premiere, as well as the donation from the GALS, we have collected enough money to spay about 45 dogs. Considering 3 weeks ago, I only had R17.00 left in our Sterilization Fund, with your help, we have done exceptionally well. The Movie Premiere went off very well and I am sure everyone really enjoyed the lunch. The platters and sandwiches were of the best and we can really be proud to have such fabulous restaurants in our area. I really appreciate all the sponsors helping out. Thank you so very much! Thank you to the What’s New in Plett / Print Shop for advertising and printing the tickets with love. Also to Spur and The Red Dragon for the seating arrangements. Thanks also to everyone who sold tickets. So much more can be accomplished when we all lend a helping hand. Great news is that we have, at last, found premises for the Charity

2010 - World Cup Soccer - thru the eyes of

local 15 year old….. 4 years ago seems such a long time away, when I was only 11 years old. I had just finished watching the finals against Italy and France, and I thought that the South African World Cup Soccer was still far away but wait, now its only 14 days away. I dreamt then, when I was 11, that I would be there, when I was 15. I must have been mad thinking I could be there, at 15 ,and of course I was because there is still lots that is going to happen before the Wittedrift Soccer Team would have a chance to play for SA in 2014, but you never know what can be done with commitment and training. The important thing is that 2010 is here and South Africa must give the Soccer World a great time, a time to remember and never forget our beautiful country and beautiful people. South Africa can be the proudest African country because we are the first country from Africa to host the World Cup. Lets look at the wonderful stadiums the workers

have built and without these people there would be no stadiums and without the stadiums would be no World Cup. They fully deserve their tickets for the work they have put in over the past 4 years. 14 days to go, the participating countries are picking their 23 man squads and the favorites are Brazil, England and Spain but you can never right off the 2006 winners and the rest of the top 8 ranked teams.

☺☺☺☺☺☺☺☺☺☺☺☺☺☺☺☺☺☺☺ ☺ ☺ The Happy Shoppe ☺ ☺ TOYS GIFTS TOYS GIFTS TOYS GIFTS ☺ ☺ For all your : toys, makeup, jewellery, ☺ ☺ stickers, kids stationery, camping gear, ☺ ☺ furniture, house decor, soaps, lighters, ☺ ☺ crafts, watches, SA mirror socks & scarves * Gift Vouchers available ☺ ☺ @The Bayview Centre, Plett ☺ ☺ ☺☺☺☺☺☺☺☺☺☺☺☺☺☺☺☺☺☺☺ You also don’t know, with the world cup being on our African Soil, if any of the top 6 African teams would pull off some shocks, especially Nigeria, being a favorite out of their group. The only really tough team is Argentina, in the Nigerian’s group. Unfortunately South Africa is in a really tough group with France, Mexico and Uruguay but if we can win against Mexico in the opening match of the tournament then we have a good chance to get through out in the group stage. Lets look at Europe, after Spain’s “Euro 2008” win, whereby they did not lose any points in qualifying, they should be Europe’s team to win. For South America it could be Brazil. A big shock was when Dunga, Brazil’s couch left out Ronaldinho from their squad. Most fans saw him as being Brazil’s best chance but Dunga decided to pick his team from the most committed players in Brazil. Everyone wants to see what Diego Mardonna can do as a coach. He has not done very well in qualifying but they have stars like Tevez, Higuain, Aguero and of course Lionel Messi who has been by far the best player this year with helping Barcelona win the league and scoring a number of hat-tricks. Messi has been with Barcelona since he was 12. Due to a medical condition that Messi suffered from, he and his family left Argentina and relocated to Spain, where the treatment was more affordable. 14 days to go and there are not many tickets available, but this promises that the stadiums will be packed. May the best team win, and I am very excited to be part of our World Cup Soccer and I wish Bafana Bafana best of luck.. Written by: Luke Olsen Grade 9 Wittedrift High School. A Thought for the Week

John 8:12 [CEV] “Once again Jesus spoke to the people. This time He said: “I am the light for the world! Follow Me and you won’t be walking in the dark, you will have the light that gives life.” Light is often associated with life, even in nature it is true that where there is an abundance of sunlight there is usually prolific life as opposed to those areas where everything is dark. We live in a dark world where, at every level of life, in spite of man’s frantic and desperate efforts, things are deteriorating instead of improving. Jesus Christ comes to us and tells

to perpetuate his memory by building a beautiful church where the people could worship God. When the building was finished and the family came to inspect it they noticed that it was rather dark and gloomy inside as there were no lights at all. us that He is the light that we all need and, if we are prepared to follow Him – that is if we will put our trust in Him – He will guide us through the dark patches of life and bring us safely to the other side. Believers in Christ, too, have a responsibility to bring light wherever God has placed them. Jesus made this clear when He also stated: “You are like light for the whole world. Make your light shine, so that others will see the good that you do and will praise your Father in heaven.” [Matt. 5:14a;16] When you follow Jesus, the true light of the world, and He takes up residence in your heart, you, too, become a light by allowing Him to shine His character through you. There is a tiny church somewhere in Southern Europe built on a hill, called “The church of the lamps”. Legend says that it was built in the 16th Century by a duke who wanted

replied: “There will be no light fixtures – I will give each of the villagers a small bronze lamp – each will carry his own lamp and so they will be the light in this church!” May we, as followers of Jesus Christ, also daily carry our lighted lamp and bring the true light of the Gospel and God’s salvation to this world. True friends and colleagues are those who would support you when you desperately need their support. You have shown your support in different ways and styles. You have touched the soul of our family with your humanity and compassion. Our mother passed on when we needed her most, but you have filled that gap with your blessings. Our family want to extend a special word of GRATITUDE AND APPRECIATION to all those who cried, comforted and supported US during the period of mourning the loss of our mother recently. May you continue to comfort those who need to be supported most and continue to embrace the spirit of UBUNTU to all humankind. We as family are blessed to have friends and colleagues such as you!!

Lunchbox Theatre and Bitou Tourism have begun their 2nd annual

Performance and Creative Arts Showcase

We are visiting all 9 of Bitou’s communities to unearth the amazing talent that our performance and visual artists have. This year the number of applicants has increased by over 50%. NOW WE ARE LOOKING FOR TOWN BASED ARTISTS TO JOIN US AT PIESANG VALLEY HALL ON 27TH MAY AT 6PM FOR A SHORT INTRODUCTORY MEETING The program is a multi phase and includes the following; - Community based preliminary meetings - An audition process - A community based concert with the best visual and best performance artists in that community - Finals, showcasing the Best of the Best. AND THEN A skills development and job creation program whereby those with the most talent and teaching skills are offered opportunities to pass these skills to those with potential but not the know how. We are creating a database to use as a marketing tool to expand the exposure of all involved artists. Let’s show Bitou that townies are also a part of the greater community

Excerpts from the

STATE OF THE TOWN ADDRESS

BY THE EXECUTIVE MAYOR, ALDERMAN LULAMA MVIMBI ON APRIL 30, 2010 At the occasion of the State of the Town Address in 2009, we concluded by borrowing from Jancarl Campi’s poem “Never Let Go of Hope”. We said “One day you will see that it all has finally come together. What you have always wished for has finally come to be. You will look back and laugh at what has passed and you will ask yourself, "How did I get through all of that?" We are humbled that tonight we present our fourth progress report since the last local government elections in 2006. This report covers the period from 2006 to 2010. When we took office, we accepted the responsibility of ensuring that more roads are tarred, water and electricity become more accessible than ever before, more houses are built, waste removal is improved, free basic services is provided to many of our deserving people, sporting and recreation facilities are provided to many of our people. We promised improved and better way of doing government business, with specific emphasis on ensuring that our poor people have access to housing, water, electricity and sanitation, and that we create jobs. At the start of our term some people in our community were still using the bucket sysWHAT'S NEW IN PLETT – 27 MAY 2010

tem. We spent R2.4m to totally eradicate the bucket system in all our formal households. Today, all our people living in formal houses use water-borne sewerage system. Given this background, it is not surprising that our housing backlog is huge in comparison with the size of our town. Our municipality worked hard to improve the situation. Since 2006 when we took office we have built not only homes but made a home environment possible for our people in Kurland, Kranshoek, Kwanokuthula, Green Valley, New Horizons, and Bossiesgif/ Qolweni. In these areas we built 270 houses in 2006/2007; 520 houses were built in 2007/2008; we proceeded to build 664 houses in 2008/2009; and we are building 230 houses in 2009/2010. This gives a total of about 1684 houses at a cost of about R112m. To upgrade the hostel and Beacon Isle flats in New Horizons cost additional R4m. Despite this outstanding performance, we are still a long way to go as our housing waiting list is growing rapidly, and we now have over 7000 potential beneficiaries on the list. This means that we shall have to put more effort in our attempts to provide more people with quality housing. At our recent meeting, we approved a Housing Integrated Plan to address our backlog of 7000 possible beneficiaries. We still believe that we will achieve our goal of ensuring that “one day everyone will have a secure roof over their heads”. We are also mindful of not perpetuating apartheid-style housing patterns by pushing Black people to the periphery of the CBD and previously White areas. While we respect property rights and we have no intentions of devaluing the existing properties, it is now our policy that every large scale housing development must include a portion of middle income housing in their plans. This would ensure that as government we are freed of the burden of having to provide for teachers, nurses, police, senior municipal officials and other people who could access funding from the banks in order to provide for their own housing needs. This policy is line with government policy of engaging banks in housing delivery to deal with the needs of many of our people. We will soon be meeting the local banks in this regard. We improved on the quality and quantity of basic services we gave to our community. As a developmental government, we are not only committed to building houses, but provide an environment of home to our community. For that, we made a promise of ensuring that gradually we improve the infrastructure like roads, and electricity in our community. We said would ensure that our roads are user friendly and contribute towards a growing society. It was for that reason that we tarred and paved streets and sidewalks. In this regard work was done on the following streets Kranshoek – Charlotte Ross, Kiwiet, Spreeu and Stockerstroom Streets ; Kwanokuthula – Madokwe, Ndlovini, Bacela, Mangqasana, Mbeki and Gqamlana, Skosana, Wizard, Hani, Besani, Sishuba, Luxolo, Nqolo, Sajini, Biko, and Nomzamo.; Kurland - Loredo, Kok and

Kerk; Wittedrift – Loerie Street, Rottendam Street and various connector streets. New Horizons – Miller, Jetha and Levendal. Nature’s Valley – Iris, Cineraria In addition the following streets will be tarred, upgraded and/or pave in the coming year – several sidewalks in New Horizon Melkhout, Stinkhout, Geelhout and Speed humps in Keurbooms Mantyi, Phelandaba, Mahlangu, Nkululeko, end of Sishuba (turn around), Bacela and Speed humps in Kwanokuthula Pine Street, High Street access roads, and sidewalks on Main Street in Green Valley Watsonia, Heather, Berg Lily in Nature’s Valley Steve Biko, Freedom, Botlani, De Waal and sidewalks in Kurland Protea, and Buitekant in Kranshoek. We will also re-surface some roads in the CBD. One of our major projects has been the upgrade and beautification of the Central Business District, with major rebuilding of the Main Street. We received positive feedback from the community. People are proud of the work the municipality has done in the Main Street. To date, it has cost us R25.4m to be where we are with the project. We are still committed to complete. The project has been well received. Many people have told us that they are proud of the new look Main Street of our town. Other than it has made our town beautiful, the project has been creating jobs for the locals and stimulated local economy. In 2008, we promised to build a 24hour Community Health Centre for the people of Bitou. Many of you who happened to live or gone through Kwanokuthula, which is the site of the centre, would have realised that work is at full steam. The building of this Community Health Centre is line with one of the government’s key priorities, that of making health more accessible to our communities. We are satisfied with the progress made on the project. We keep regular contact with contractors and regularly visit the project. South Africa is a developing country. All developing countries have a significant large number of poor people. The African National Congress, which rules both the country and this town, committed itself to a better life for all. Part of that commitment is to ensure that the poorest of the poor have access to basic services. In order for these vulnerable members of our community to enjoy the fruit of freedom, we promised to provide free electricity, water, refuse removal and sanitation to deserving households. We kept our promise by providing free 50kwh of electricity to 1 750 Indigent households, 2 886 poor households and 1 738 households in the Eskom area of supply. We supply free 6kl of water to 1750 indigent households and 3 408 poor households. Free sanitation and refuse removal are given to 1750 indigent households. We encourage those members of the community who cannot afford to pay for services due to unemployment of very low salaries to apply for this assistance.

Letter via the Editor Animal Welfare. I see the weekly reports by Heidi who seems to be doing a sterling job caring for the Plettenberg Bay Animals. Why is it, when we have an Animal Welfare Society in Plettenberg Bay that has a committee, an inspector with a vehicle and proper funding, that Heidi seems to be doing all the good work, but at her own expense and using her own car. Curious. by email. Sadly, Animal Welfare do not have ‘proper’ funding. They too rely on the generosity of animal lovers. Inspector Robert is doing sterling work. Heidi is a wonderful caring individual who has taken it upon herself to assist with an overwhelmingly difficult problem. Wherever possible she works with animal welfare and Inspector Robert. International Candle Light-Day

Theme “I am Responsible” Thank-you Bitou local-AIDS Council. Last week I attended candle light-day to remember our brothers, sisters & everyone that passed away because of AIDS. There was youth of different churches, local that was at Simunye Community Centre library. Likely there was visitors from George Mrs Sass, HIV AIDS co-ordinator, Mrs Vidonia George Global Fund, Mr Simphiwe internship Bitou Local AIDS council our co-ordinators Mr N. Lose, Mrs B. Jacobs, Mr S. Qonose, Miss B. Duma. Our reverents Miss Molo, Mr Mathafeni. Our guests state that we need to fight AIDS no matter what your status is, know your status before you have unprotected sex, if you are positive don’t spread it because you don’t want to die alone! That’s wrong, the more you spread the lesser chances for you to live many years instead of that use your treatment. We must support people with AIDS, not to treat them different from us because that’s the most thing killed them. Just think if that was doing to you! How will you feel? Lets give them love, hope because they are still our brother & sisters. Plett has a high rate of AIDS! This is painful! What do you do to support AIDS? If somebody told you he or her status! Don’t talk about her or his status that is wrong, you can be in trouble for that. Everyone even myself was holding a candle, we light them one by one, we pray for AIDS that God can’t he help us? Wayne. PAINTING/ART CLASSES under professional guidance ... in peaceful surroundings.
