This time of the year is one of the most interesting in Plett. The southern right whales are in the Bay on their annual sojourn... Delighting all and making a good topic for chatting to friends, family and visitors. It is also the time when the locals get active and start organising things to get together and beat the green season blues. Christmas in July, Trivia Quizzes and lots more. There are also all sorts of lovely sales and specials to tempt … And the weather is wonderful! Plenty of sunshine days interspersed with a few chilly ones to awaken the senses and to avoid Plett Tarnish (known as Outeniqua Rust in the parts of the Garden Route).There is very little that beats snuggling up in front of a nice fire. Plettenberg Bay Country Club Bowls Section We have had a very busy and fun filled month. Plenty of competitions and culminating in a wonderful evening on Friday 23rd July when members and partners enjoyed a wonderful celebration of Christmas in July in the club house. All the trimmings, delicious menu, and live music (carefully selected to suit) - for dancing or simply to enjoy. This special evening was largely sponsored by Eileen and Rodney Grosskopff. Our grateful thanks to them and the members who worked to makethe evening such a success. Another social occasion held on the 11th July was also much enjoyed by all who attended. The SPI Sponsored Day of sporting fun was unfortunately washed out due to much needed rain but many members enjoyed the dinner followed by watching the final of the Soccer World Cup on big screens in the main Club. Our thanks to SPI and Greg Phillips and his staff for this pleasant evening. We held our Annual General Meeting on the 15th July 2010 and the following were elected to the Committee: President: Dick Fisher, and Diane Faragher Thomas, Eileen Grosskopff, Graham Morris, Stephen Rado, Colleen Shuttleworth, Jenny Stevenson and Roger Wright. We congratulate them and

Brief via die Redakteur My skrywe rakende die plavei van sypaadjies in New Horizons (W.N.I.P. 10 June 2010) het betrekking. Interessant om te sien dat die kerkperseel van een van die prominente “Tenderpreneurs” in New Horizons nou geplavei word, slegs weke na die sypaadjies geplavei is. Dit terwyl skoolstraat (Geelhoutweg) slegs halfpad geplavei is. Toevallig behoort die kerkperseel aan dieselfde persoon wat verantwoordelik was vir die plavei van die sypaadjies. Selfs meer toevallig is die feit dat presies dieselfde plaveisel gebruik word. In my opinie is dit te veel van ŉ toeval. Please be on the lookout for oiled penguins and seabirds over the next few weeks. In the last few days, 11 heavily oiled penguins have been accepted at rehabilitation centres in Eastern Cape, and on Friday, Tenikwa received the first oiled penguin in this area from an oilspill which Sanparks EC are trying to locate. At this point, it looks like a small oil spill off Port Elizabeth, and hopefully its impact will be contained. If you do come across any penguins in Plett (oiled or non-oiled), or any oiled seabirds, please remove them from the beach, keep them warm and dry, and bring them to Tenikwa as soon as p ossible. It is that time of the year again when we have a rather strange phenomenon that takes place in Plettenberg Bay and I have named it Whale Trails. If you look out over the Bay during a calm day you will notice long strange marks on the sea that almost look like oil slicks. These long marks on the surface of the water are the ripple patterns of the surface being disturbed by large underwater objects, i.e. submarines or Whales and these marks can stretch for many kilometres. Should the day be very calm, these trails can last for many hours and if you look at the one end of them, you should find the Whale or Whales that caused them. Happy hunting. Roger Davis

The George Society of Arts will be staging the musical production of ‘ANNIE’ at the Arts Theatre from the 14 th -18th December, and will be holding auditions to form a company of cast members in August This wonderful show telling the story of little orphan Annie searching to find her parents, will be directed and choreographed by Edwina Rapley who’s professionalism to detail will surely make this show a ‘must see’ for the Christmas Season. A Thought for the Week.

"Don't store up treasures on earth! Moths and rust can destroy them and thieves can break in and steal them. Instead, store up your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy them, and thieves cannot break in and steal them. Your heart will always be where your treasure is.” Matt.6:19-21 [CEV] Most people realize that a good investment of your money when you are young can greatly benefit you at a later stage in life, especially when you retire. Investing your hard earned money, however, is not a casual matter and there are some very important and necessary questions to be dealt with, such as: “Is it a sound investment?” “What dividends will I receive?” “When does it mature?” etc. Do you realize that, almost in the same sense, our lives are an investment too and that the same kind of questions should be asked? Jesus addressed this issue in our text above when He spoke about people’s treasures or their investments. He made it clear that, whereas earthly investments can be stolen or be otherwise destroyed, one’s heavenly treasures are safe and secure with God. He also indicated that our hearts will show where our treasure really is. Investing our lives with God is the soundest investment anyone can ever make, as He is eternal, reliable, trustworthy and faithful and will never let us down. The dividends, too, are great, not only in this life, but they actually last into eternity. The full “pay-out” takes place when we stand before Him at the end of our lives and when He awards those who have placed their faith in Jesus Christ with eternal life in His presence and with the believers of all ages. Paul, the apostle, urges us: “Act like people with good sense and not like fools.

Giant Thank You to Greenwood Parents On Saturday we had our annual Fix and make Fabulous Parent Work Day. As usual the parents responded wonderfully and we have spruced up our school beautifully. Work was done both inside the classrooms and outside in the gardens. Sagging doors were removed and replaced properly, new pathways were laid, outdoor playground equipment was fixed, including 4 fabulous new swings in the primary school, a canopy was erected over a classroom door, gardens were planted, a hop-skotch area was laid out of pavers, trees were pruned, benches were sanded, varnished or painted, hockey goals were made – everything to make the school look even more cheerful and welcoming! Inside the classrooms parents helped put up curtains and blinds, Photostat and laminate work cards, cover and log library books, spruce up reading areas in the preschool, erect shelving and storage, put up more hooks for children’s bags and lots more – all helping to make the classrooms run more efficiently. The hard work was followed by a lovely braai, giving parents and staff a chance to relax and socialize. We thank all the fantastic parents and the dedicated Greenwood staff who all gave up their Saturday morning (and the dad’s who gave up their rugby viewing!) – this is a once-a-year event that really makes a huge difference to the school and ultimately benefits the learners at Greenwood – the school that just gets better and better! Now that the school is looking so wonderful, we look forward to welcoming prospective parents and learners, from toddlers to grade 7, at our annual Spring Tea and Open Day on Friday 3rd September, with registration for 2011 on Saturday 4 th September. Our Children Need YOU!

Are you in any way working or volunteering to support school going children that attend any of the public or private Bitou schools? You may be an educator, library reading volunteer, sports coach, dance, drama, art, karate, swimming teacher, counsellor, peer educator, social worker, career guidance specialist, private tutor, life skills practitioner, aftercare provider or an involved parent with special gifts. If so, the Bitou 10 Foundation asks that you generously set aside your Saturday of 21 August 2010 to share your insights and collaborate to make extra mural activities accessible to all our local children. While some children have joined the new Plett Pioneers Field Band or participate in after school sport, the fact remains that children who attend schools any distance from home and rely on scheduled taxis, buses or walk long distances to return home, are left out of extramural sport (and extra lessons). Children whose parents are under financial stress do not have access to the array of physical, social and emotional benefits that participating in sport, dance, drama and art bestows. A plethora of exciting privately offered recreational, academic and sport lessons are on offer to families with the capacity to pay for them. The forthcoming Indaba aims to ensure that everything possible is done to ensure that structured after-school activity programmes are built into the school day for all Bitou’s children. The Bitou 10 Foundation has initiated this historic meeting to find out who is offering music, art, drama, sporting activities and other services in Bitou. Together with the schools, programmes can then be developed do for all young people what Dreamfields soccer and The Field Band Foundation has, and continues to do for children of Bitou. All our children deserve every opportunity that can light their imaginations, cause them to dig deep to draw on their own character reserves and so to learn life skills and life lessons.
