I will never accept that lives are being taken just because we do not have a proper safe haven for these poor dogs. I was called to see a beautiful Golden Retriever Cross which we had spayed last year in New Horizons. She had developed hot spots under her chin, around her ears and on her face. We put her onto anti-biotic and supplied a special wash to treat her with. Within a week her condition started improving and her hair started growing back. Six weeks later I passed by to check and found that a dog had bitten her under her chin and the infection this time was down her front legs, her whole chest and onto her neck and face. She was in absolute agony. Her owners now decided they no longer wanted her. I will never forget how hard she wagged her tail when I went to collect her and then she was put to sleep! The same applies to the 16 dogs which I was asked to remove for killing pigs in Qolweni. They had got into the stye and killed two pigs. Not because they were hungry, perhaps just for some fun. I decided to take the two larger dogs, as there was no way that a small dog could possibly kill a pig. I am still haunted by the way the one dog cried when we removed him, all the way to the Vet and all the way to his death. I know he was trying to tell me that he was sorry and wouldn't do this again, but the owner of the pigs had threatened to take matters into his own hands. When will this killing stop? I suppose only when there are no more dogs. As I understood, the

PAWS Spay Day in KwaNokuthula

A successful spay day was held at Plett Aid Foundation at the Community Centre in Kwanokuthula in mid April. Almost 60 dogs were sterilized by veterinarians who gave freely of their time and with the valuable help from the Knysna Animal welfare spayathon team, all went smoothly. Thank you to all the diligent volunteers at all levels which included foreign visiting vets from Spain and Costa Rica, Fabiola and Alejandra who helped Charlotte with the anesthetics. Thanks go to Drs Brendan Tindall, Sylvia Shortreid, Natalie Genlloud and Kat Davis for the day's success. The day was made possible by a much appreciated generous donation to PAWS, specifically for this purpose. Thanks to the staff and helpers at the Woman's Shelter who came to the rescue by offering their facilities and assistance. Thank you to the public for all the blankets and Plett Primary School for the loan of the tables. PAWS would also like to thank the owners for responding responsibly by bringing their dogs and cats to be spayed. There will be more such days to help towards the curbing of unwanted puppies. The suggestions put forward last week to manage animal welfare in the greater Plett area was very noble and does make a lot of sense. I would like to recommend that détente is the answer to go forward. Please bear in mind that to have a very successful community animal forum, we have to work extremely close with the Veterinary professionals in the greater Garden Route area. The input from the various Veterinary schools as well and research centers should also be included. Remember without their input and cooperation, no successful animal welfare society can be realized. There are many of us that have supported and will support a community animal project, however, the due diligence must be impeccable. Remember this society is going to function on philanthropy and not for personal gain, however there will be costs involved. There is no free lunch. Maaike Murphy spotted a Southern Carmine Bee Eater from her kitchen window

in Nature’s Valley, recently, hawking insects! Geoff McIlleron then took a picture of the bird. It looks like was a juvenile bird, as the colours appear a bit weak, and the longer central tail spines were not present. Its tail was quite cut- off at the extremities, and some of the feathers were a bit out of place. At this time of the year the bird should be migrating northwards to Zambia and Malawi, from the Kruger National Park regions and Northern extremities of South Africa. – Not coming south for our winter. One wonders what caused this bird to be so far off course. I can only find one other record of this bird in the Western Cape, and it has been reported that this was seen at the turn of the century!!!!. Well done to Maaike for spotting the bird and to Geoff for getting such a good photograph in poor light conditions. Several prominent birders from Cape Town travelled up to see this bird, and were duly rewarded with excellent sightings. This is probably the most out-of-range bird recorded for a long, long time. FAMSA (Families SA) Women and Domestic Violence Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) continued MYTHS Myth 1: Men who assault their wives are mentally ill. Reality: Wife assault is too widespread to be explained away by mental illness. Most men who assault their wives confine their violence to the privacy of their own home. The abuse is often directed to particular parts of the body that will not visibly bruise; obvious restraint and forethought is necessary to accomplish this. Violent husbands are not likely to attack their bosses when frustrated. If the man was truly mentally ill, he would lack the ability to be selective in his targets and controlled in his administration of abuse. Myth 2 : Alcohol causes a man to beat his wife. Reality: While alcohol is often abused by the violent partner, it is not the cause of the violence. Rather, it facilitates the use of physical force by allowing the offender to abdicate responsibility for his behaviour. Some men become intoxicated in order to act out their violent wishes. Myth 3: Only poor women get beaten. Reality: Research has shown that victims of wife assault come from all walks of life – rich/poor, black/white, rural/urban, educated/uneducated, full-time housewives/career women. There are no exceptions. Myth 4: Women provoke violence. Therefore, they deserve what they get. Reality: No woman ever deserves to be beaten, regardless of the kind of person she is. Provocation is an excuse the offender uses to avoid responsibility for his own behaviour. Many people support this view by also examining the victim’s behaviour or personality for clues as to the cause of the assault. Excuse-making perpetuates the use of violence as an acceptable method of problem-solving and leads the offender to believe he is justified in using force to get his own way.

Myth 5: Women enjoy the abuse and find it sexually stimulating. Reality: Women do not find pleasure in abuse, nor is it a sexual turn-on. In fact, women are terrified, horrified and disgusted when their partners turn on them. The “masochist” label (someone who derives pleasure from pain or seeks it out) is often used in an irresponsible manner by uninformed people to explain the assaulted woman’s dilemma. Although women often return to an abusive partner, it is not the violence they are returning to but the hope that it has stopped. Applying this label to assaulted women is demeaning and disrespectful and is one more way to blame the victim. 17 years of Democracy celebrated on Freedom Day.

The cold weather did not stop people from all communities of Bitou who gathered at Kwanokuthula stadium to celebrate Freedom day. It is unbelievable but yes indeed its 17 years after the first ever and historical democratic elections in S.A that took place in 1994, whereby black people were final awarded an opportunity to have a say in the land of their ancestors a decision that never came cheap or easy as many Africans had to scarifies their lives through the struggle for democracy. It is for that reason why I believe that the freedom that our fallen hero’s and those who are still living had fought for need to be celebrated and defended so that it will never be lost as everyone who is old enough to remember how it was in those days will know what is meant by losing this freedom. There was entertainers to keep the people who were hiding under the tent, hot with live performances. The line up included Bitou Jazz band that played live music from the composition of the national and international artists, the band is also playing every Sunday’s afternoon at Malibu’s Tavern, Nicotee also performed songs from his first album Auth’ ase Plett, followed by Slow Poison with their Pantsula dance , Sekshin also rocked the audience with hot tracks like Bitou-Plett , Imali yegintsa and Senz’ iparty my favourate song from his much anticipated upcoming album Kwaito Royal Blood .Then it was DJ Mjilo on the one and two’s who introduced a hot single Sizolala featuring Sekshin and Ngu-King from his untitled album that he is busy with at the New Plett base recording studio “Magic studio” and I heard that after the show, he went straight to the studio to finish another song before heading to King Williams town the same night

Bitou 10 kids’ busy Easter break

The Bitou 10 Foundation (B10F), in collaboration with the WCED Circuit 4, organised a 3-day Motivational and Study Camp for Grade 12 Murray High learners from 25 – 27 April hosted by Wittedrift High, a result of a drop in Murray High Grade 12 results from a 71% pass in 2009 to 54% in 2010. A way had to be found to assist learners to improve their results. The Camp aimed to motivate the learners, to give them direction and to get them focussed. Motivational speakers were invited to provide hope to the learners through sharing information on career and study options, and financial aid. Local experienced tutors with proven performance records were recruited to partner with the Grade 12 teachers to identify areas of difficulty in all subjects and to provide extra tuition for up to six hours each day. This is the beginning of a longer term learner support initiative as many of the tutors will continue to provide extra tuition at Murray High in the afternoons, on weekends and during holidays until the learners sit their final exams at year-end. The feedback from the learners was gratifying – most of them wanted to stay longer! Dreamfields and the Bitou 10 Foundation and schools have shared a rich relationship since we first teamed up in 2009. The aim of the DreamEvent programme, sponsored by the Provincial Government of the Western Cape (PGWC), is to use young girls’ love of sport to share with them the positive messages about building confident self-image and thus self-esteem that can help them to make positive choices to avoid early teen pregnancy. Thandi MpamboSibhukwana, a human rights champion strongly endorsed by the Premier of the Western Cape, Helen Zille, is the key figure of the social dialogue session at all District Dreamfields / PGWC girls’ football tournaments; Mpambo-Sibhukwana led a motivational, frank and challenging interactive dialogue with the girls: My right, my responsibility, my future was the powerful message. Close on 20 teams from George and Plett, who were extended the

invitation as 2009 Dreamfields schools, participated in the George DreamEvent, all vying for top spot, with the winning team qualifying for the Western Cape finals to be held in Cape Town on May 28. Competition was stiff and excitement ran high when two Plett teams made it through to the final, Plett Primary and Phakamisani. And Phakamisani is off, as the Tournament winners, to the Regional finals in Cape Town at the end of the month; our congratulations and good wishes go with them! Life in Plett

Well, the Easter holidays have come and gone so fast; it is hard to believe. This time we had my family, no partners, and the usual discussion came out (it is always quite serious in my mind): all my siblings and parents have brown eyes, and dark brown at that, and I have blue eyes. We have always had a sneaky suspicion that mummy had a little fling with her brother-in-law (with blue eyes and in those days, eye candy). I was the first born. Secondly, my siblings all had A grades at school and I crept around the E’s and F’s. Mum is also VERY BRIGHT. Our personalities are also so different – with them and Mummy being the same – and me, so different. This time we had a book, the written word, to do some serious ‘workings out’. In this book they ask each person many questions on a variety of subjects. Now remember I was not the bright one so maybe I did not understand many of the questions. After a few hours of repeating questions (because someone missed one) there was the marking. There are four categories: The Powerful Choleric, The Perfect Melancholy, The Peaceful Phlegmatic and the Popular Sanguine. Needless to say my family were all Choleric and my husband the Peaceful Phlegmatic. Well, he has to be to be married to a Sanguine - The Popular Sanguine – ME. Again, what does that tell you; that I am different - adopted??? Just a few little things about the Sanguine. Appealing personality, talkative and a storyteller. Life of

the party and a great sense of humour. Memory for colour (this is a problem because the memory is going, where was I?), emotional and demonstrative (have been in some fixes with that), enthusiastic and expressive, cheerful and bubbling over. Curious!!!!! That is so true; I always want to know everything. Good on stage (was at school), wide-eyed and innocent (definitely not), changeable disposition and sincere at heart. Creative and colourful, energetic and enthusiastic. A Sanguine makes friends easily, loves people, thrives on compliments and is exciting. Is envied by others and does not hold grudges (why else would I still be friends with the girl who stole my second husband), apologises quickly and prevents dull moments. So you see, there is a big difference between my personality and my family’s but they (my family) have made lots of money, paid off their houses and buy with cash. I, on the other hand, have none of the above but my sparkling personality makes people pay for me! The work requires you to commit to report to office duty every second weekend - working Saturday & Sunday Mornings 8:30 - 12noon. You will be required to be on standby on your cell phone whilst on weekend duty. Alternate weeks will require a couple of week day commitments. Assisting with motor car driving short trips in and around the Plett area, will also be a need. During the holiday periods, the demand to assist at the work place will be a little more urgent, due to the volumes of customers that increase the work load. Your readers might be interested in the following extract from a Wikipedia article on the subject of visiting cards that have been impregnated with an extract (burundanga or scopolamine) from the "brugmansia" plant - which, in South Africa, is also called the "Angel's Trumpet" "In 1910 it was detected in the remains believed to be those of Cora Crippen, wife of Dr. Hawley Harvey Crippen, and was accepted at the time as the cause of her death since her husband was known to have bought some at the

start of the year. Scopolamine poisoning is sometimes reported by the media as method by which people are raped, killed, or robbed, although largely exaggerated in many unfounded rumours. For example, there have been a number of unfounded circulating rumours that Colombian robbers were using a transcutaneous delivery mechanism involving business cards, pamphlets or flyers laced with the drug. However, in actual fact, the quantity of toxin diffusing through the skin barrier after one short contact of the fingers with an object is much too small to be readily absorbed in the body and to have any significant effect. The use of burundanga (aka Scopolamine) impregnated visit cards to attack and to rob isolated people is often propagated by chain emails and is presently reported as hoax or urban legend by many specialized web sites. There have also been reports of tourists being robbed after having scopolamine slipped into their food or drink. Recently, these incidents have been reported in Thailand."
