What have you planned for the Moms in your life this Sunday? Our sincere condolences to our mayor, Lulama Mvimbi and his family on the sudden and sad loss of his Mom, Nowandile Eunice (Mafeni) Mvimbi last Saturday. Here was a fine lady who urged her son to be the best and fairest he could in all his dealings and so gave us a wonderful humble and gentle, yet incredibly strong leader. Ald. Mvimbi shared at the recent State of Town Address last Friday how his Mom was probably the happiest citizen in the area with the upgrade of the Main street (since she felt it a disgrace that such a beautiful town should have had such a horrid Main street as it did for too many years and urged him to “fix” it.) We know that the family have many happy memories of the unique and wonderful character of her, and special times and occasions spent in her company. May the memories slowly fill the void she has left in your lives. All the kids and dads please Spoil the special ladies in your life this Mother’s day ! Make them feel amazing and appreciated.(Lots of good ideas in this edition.) Have a fabulous fun-filled week !

Bitou Municipality celebrated the 50 days countdown to the start of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in spectacular style on Friday, 23 April, with a spectacular line-up of beach games and live music. Plettonians got into the spirit of things with a mass Disci Dance on Central Beach followed by vibrant music by DJ Oliver Leigh, Shada & Band and Durban Poison and action-packed beach soccer competitions. by Heidi We have received such beautiful clothing from everyone who donated this past week. This has really helped our fund. I have managed to sell an average of almost R500 each day, that I have been at the taxi rank. With just 10 or so items, we are able to spay a dog, bringing us closer to what we have set out to do – get the dog population under control. A special thank you to

everyone who donated. Shoes and linen sell like hot cakes. Winter clothing is also now in demand. Please have a good clean out and drop off any unwanted items at Pandora’s Box, or at any of the Vets in our area. For every bag you donate, you are actually paying for a spay, thus preventing hundred of puppies being born. We really need to get a Bitou Community Veterinary Clinic Charity Shop in place. This will enable us to have a permanent income, to help the animals on a daily basis. Not a day goes by, without a dog needing help. Because the dogs are not inoculated, they don’t stand much of a chance when they contract the Parvo Virus or Distemper. I have a list of 22 puppies needing their vaccines, but the owners do not have the money to pay. A year ago, few were aware of vaccines for their animals, yet today I am asked about vaccines daily. Good to know the people are becoming more concerned regarding the welfare of their pets. These are the wanted ones. I am collecting unwanted animals daily. Some families have as many as 6 dogs on their property. Only about 20% of these animals are

Bitou’s Water Quality third best in the Country
The Department of Water Affairs initiated the drinking water quality (DWQ) regulation in 2005 with the objective of ensuring water quality improvement of tap water quality by means of compliance monitoring. The blue drop certification programme is only in its second year of existence and promises to be catalyst for sustainable improvement in South Africa’s drinking water standards and management in its entirety. Background The blue drop requirements increased from 6 to 9 in criteria. Water Safety Plans, Asset Management and DWQ Performance Publication were introduced as new requirements and accumulatively accounted for 25% of the weighting. The other requirements are Process Control and Maintenance Competency, efficiency of drinking water quality monitoring programme, credibility of drinking water sample analysis, regular submission of drinking water quality results to DWA, drinking water compliance with SANS,
drinking water quality failure response management, responsible publication of drinking water quality management performance, efficacy of basic drinking water quality asset management. Bitou Local Municipality came out third out of the top ten best blue drop performers in the country, and came out second in the Western Cape Province. The City of Johannesburg and Cape Town Metro were first and second nationally respectively and the City of Cape Town came out first in the Western Cape Province. The Municipal Blue Drop score was 97, 7 overall, with all three of the Bitou Water Treatment works acquiring blue drop status. This incredible performance during assessment warranted the allocation of the prestigious award to all the three water systems. The score signifies that the municipality is managing its water quality with excellence and that the supply water system qualifies for blue drop certification. The Bitou Municipality acquired six awards, namely, for: Retaining Blue Drop Status Water Safety Plan 3 Awards for each of Water Purification Works in Bitou 3rd Overall in the country out of 787 Water Purification Works in
the country that were assessed. Most noteworthy of this performance is the effort by the municipality to draft their own Water Safety Plan without specialist assistance. It was most commendable and serves as motivation to other municipalities that good and effective safety water plans could be drafted by those who know their system best. This means that DWA is confident that the water services institution is capable of sustaining safe quality of water supply. The Municipal Services and Infrastructure Department will act responsibly not to deviate but maintain water quality through continuous efficient operations and compliance monitoring. Two sites were identified namely the ground next to the BI hotel 3rd tennis court and in the Poortjies area. It seems likely that the BI hotel area is the preferred location. The ground on which the tennis court was built belongs to the Municipality and will therefore not create a problem. The architect has designed a building, in which the operation will take place, aware that it must be as aesthetically pleasing as possible. The amount allocated will decide on how much can be spent on the appearance of the structure. There is even a suggestion that the plant could attract tourism. In view of this windows will be build to allow people to look inside the building. The Municipality is fortunate to have been able to learn from the Sedgefield and Knysna experiences especially as far as the dumping of the concentrated brine is concerned. Due to the recent rains our greens are looking nice again and are very playable. In this connection, we would like to thank Lou Jackson for reconditioning our second mower. Dear Friends in Plett and Knysna, After 2,5 weeks of sedation and many hours in theatre, Dominic started coming out of the darkness and has slowly over the last week been trying to reconnect mind, body and soul. The accident really shattered his whole being. However, we are happy to see that every day he has been making progress. From being totally confused, speaking inappropriately, to asking questions and improving his short-term memory. He is practising with an occupational therapist to improve his cognitive skills. On an emotional level, this incident has made him very scared and worried, but also truly grateful and gentle. He is expressing so much love and

tender thoughts in his vulnerable, helpless state, it amazes me how much grace we manage to find in pain. Physically, he had one small extra hurdle to overcome, because when he became conscious, he complained of pain in his left wrist., whereupon another x-ray showed that it was in fact also fractured. So he had another op on 27.4. to put plate into wrist and also plate into left collarbone, which was not healing in the position it was expected to. So for now all ops are done, and he needs to regain strength and lots of weight. We have decided, upon recommendation of the specialists, to send Dominic to the Aurora Hospital in Port Elizabeth for rehabilitation. Even though its far away, it really is the best place for him now. He will get all the help from psychologists, speech and occupational therapy, physio and will also be able to do WHAT'S NEW IN PLETT – 6 MAY 2010
exercises in a heated pool, which will be marvellous, because he may not put weight onto the broken leg for 6 weeks. Being a swimmer, surfer, sailer, I think he will love floating around in warm water. The plan is to transport him there on Mon 3. May. Our Dominic was literally standing on the edge of the nest on 5. April, ready to spread his wings and fly out of the nest into the big world. In a flash his life changed, and he is now on a long, patient journey, which as always is an opportunity for growth on many different levels and for all of us. We will continue to take one step at a time and see where it takes us. But one thing I know for sure - Dominic and we are very lucky and extremely grateful, that he did not injure his spine and also that he will not have permanent brain damage. Under the circumstances the damage could have been much more severe. With time and all our love and support, Dominic is progressing towards a full recovery. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Our younger son, Tarquin, who also had a big operation on both knees in Stellenbosch on the 16. April (an op that was planned long ago) is at home in a wheelchair for 6 weeks, with his legs straight and in braces. The limited mobility is frustrating, but he is accepting and positive. He's become quite adept with his lambourgini and is happy to have invested in his own computer. Our Plett community has again

Local Nippers win Two Gold & Three Bronze Medals
Plett Surf Nippers excelled at the Lifesaving SA Nipper Nationals held at King`s Beach, P.E, during the Easter School Holidays. The Plet- th tenberg Bay Club finished overall 8 in the Nationwide competition Plett Surf as one of the smallest clubs, were honored when Samantha Harvey, Aidan Connelly, Michelle & Samantha De Kock were chosen for the Eastern Cape Team in a provincial competition held prior to the Club competition on King`s Beach. Plett Surf entered a team of 43 Nippers, accompanied by enthusiastic parents and dedicated coaches. The Club would like to thank our main sponsor Crush along with Plett Medical Depot, Pick ‘n Pay and Woolworths for their donations towards the Tour. Dylan van Wyk won Gold in U/14 Beach Long Run and Bronze in U/14 Beach Sprints. Monday, May 17, 2010 Grigory Alumyan - Cello Grigory Alumyan was born in Moscow and started his studies at the Central Music School in Moscow at the age of six. In 1989 he received a Stipendium from the Russian Youth Talent Foundation. While he continued his studies at the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatoire, he was already appearing regularly on the concert stages of Russia and Europe and in 1998 he settled in Germany to study with professor Martin Ostertag. Grigory has performed at all the most famous music festivals, appearing as soloist with both chamber and full orchestras. In 1999 he received his first major prize, an award from the German Academic Exchange Programne, and won Third Prize at an international music competition in 2001, an Honorary Award at the International Concert Hall Competition in the U.S.A. in 2002 and First Prize in the Unisa International String Competition in Pretoria in 2002.Grigory is currently solo cellist with the Beethoven Orchestra in Bonn. Rinko Hama - Piano Rinko Hama was born in Tokyo, Japan where she studied at the University of the Arts before going on to study at the Staatliche Hochshule fur Musik Karlsruhe. At the Staatlich Hochshule fur Musik Detmold she was awarded the Concert Diploma Cum Laude. She is much in demand as a chamber music partner but is also an established Soloist, winning the Gold Medal at the International Competition in Epinal, France, Fourth Prize at the International Piano Competition in Porto, Portugal and in 1998 she won First Prize at the International Piano Competition in Tel Hai in Isreal. The same year, Ms Hama was awarded a Stipendium by the Chopin Association of Hanover for the rendering of the composer’s piano works. Rinko is at home in a wide repertoire which stretches over four centuries, from early Bartok to contemporary works, solo work, concerti and chamber music. Due to the recent rains our greens are looking nice again and are very playable. In this connection, we would like to thank Lou Jackson for reconditioning our second mower. Our gardens are also looking colourful again thanks to the rain and Nel Meyer's hard work. We have received letters from Ruth and Gordon Whitmore advising us of their safe return to a cold England. Coaching has been restarted for new members and those of us who need to play better bowls.

Dear Friends in Plett and Knysna, After 2,5 weeks of sedation and many hours in theatre, Dominic started coming out of the darkness and has slowly over the last week been trying to reconnect mind, body and soul. The accident really shattered his whole being. However, we are happy to see that every day he has been making progress. From being totally confused, speaking inappropriately, to asking questions and improving his short-term memory. He is practising with an occupational therapist to improve his cognitive skills. On an emotional level, this incident has made him very scared and worried, but also truly grateful and gentle. He is expressing so much love and

tender thoughts in his vulnerable, helpless state, it amazes me how much grace we manage to find in pain. Physically, he had one small extra hurdle to overcome, because when he became conscious, he complained of pain in his left wrist., whereupon another x-ray showed that it was in fact also fractured. So he had another op on 27.4. to put plate into wrist and also plate into left collarbone, which was not healing in the position it was expected to. So for now all ops are done, and he needs to regain strength and lots of weight. We have decided, upon recommendation of the specialists, to send Dominic to the Aurora Hospital in Port Elizabeth for rehabilitation. Even though its far away, it really is the best place for him now. He will get all the help from psychologists, speech and occupational therapy, physio and will also be able to do WHAT'S NEW IN PLETT – 6 MAY 2010
exercises in a heated pool, which will be marvellous, because he may not put weight onto the broken leg for 6 weeks. Being a swimmer, surfer, sailer, I think he will love floating around in warm water. The plan is to transport him there on Mon 3. May. Our Dominic was literally standing on the edge of the nest on 5. April, ready to spread his wings and fly out of the nest into the big world. In a flash his life changed, and he is now on a long, patient journey, which as always is an opportunity for growth on many different levels and for all of us. We will continue to take one step at a time and see where it takes us. But one thing I know for sure - Dominic and we are very lucky and extremely grateful, that he did not injure his spine and also that he will not have permanent brain damage. Under the circumstances the damage could have been much more severe. With time and all our love and support, Dominic is progressing towards a full recovery. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Our younger son, Tarquin, who also had a big operation on both knees in Stellenbosch on the 16. April (an op that was planned long ago) is at home in a wheelchair for 6 weeks, with his legs straight and in braces. The limited mobility is frustrating, but he is accepting and positive. He's become quite adept with his lambourgini and is happy to have invested in his own computer. Our Plett community has again

Due to the recent rains our greens are looking nice again and are very playable. In this connection, we would like to thank Lou Jackson for reconditioning our second mower. Our gardens are also looking colourful again thanks to the rain and Nel Meyer's hard work. We have received letters from Ruth and Gordon Whitmore advising us of their safe return to a cold England. Coaching has been restarted for new members and those of us who need to play better bowls.

Dear Friends in Plett and Knysna, After 2,5 weeks of sedation and many hours in theatre, Dominic started coming out of the darkness and has slowly over the last week been trying to reconnect mind, body and soul. The accident really shattered his whole being. However, we are happy to see that every day he has been making progress. From being totally confused, speaking inappropriately, to asking questions and improving his short-term memory. He is practising with an occupational therapist to improve his cognitive skills. On an emotional level, this incident has made him very scared and worried, but also truly grateful and gentle. He is expressing so much love and

tender thoughts in his vulnerable, helpless state, it amazes me how much grace we manage to find in pain. Physically, he had one small extra hurdle to overcome, because when he became conscious, he complained of pain in his left wrist., whereupon another x-ray showed that it was in fact also fractured. So he had another op on 27.4. to put plate into wrist and also plate into left collarbone, which was not healing in the position it was expected to. So for now all ops are done, and he needs to regain strength and lots of weight. We have decided, upon recommendation of the specialists, to send Dominic to the Aurora Hospital in Port Elizabeth for rehabilitation. Even though its far away, it really is the best place for him now. He will get all the help from psychologists, speech and occupational therapy, physio and will also be able to do WHAT'S NEW IN PLETT – 6 MAY 2010
exercises in a heated pool, which will be marvellous, because he may not put weight onto the broken leg for 6 weeks. Being a swimmer, surfer, sailer, I think he will love floating around in warm water. The plan is to transport him there on Mon 3. May. Our Dominic was literally standing on the edge of the nest on 5. April, ready to spread his wings and fly out of the nest into the big world. In a flash his life changed, and he is now on a long, patient journey, which as always is an opportunity for growth on many different levels and for all of us. We will continue to take one step at a time and see where it takes us. But one thing I know for sure - Dominic and we are very lucky and extremely grateful, that he did not injure his spine and also that he will not have permanent brain damage. Under the circumstances the damage could have been much more severe. With time and all our love and support, Dominic is progressing towards a full recovery. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Our younger son, Tarquin, who also had a big operation on both knees in Stellenbosch on the 16. April (an op that was planned long ago) is at home in a wheelchair for 6 weeks, with his legs straight and in braces. The limited mobility is frustrating, but he is accepting and positive. He's become quite adept with his lambourgini and is happy to have invested in his own computer. Our Plett community has again

Lunchbox Theatre ran a 5 hour Theatre Development workshop on Saturday with a group of Youth Leaders from Plett Secondary and Murray High. These very talented young people are part of an initiative that includes key roleplayers like Bitou 10 Foundation, Lunchbox Theatre, Leigh Dunn and Joe Kirby. The Drama for Reconciliation project will see these young leaders creating theatre shows with learners from Phakamisani and Formosa Primaries over the winter holidays. Bitou Executive Mayor hand delivered the address on the
State of the Town
Friday evening many residents from all the corners of Bitou municipality were gathered at Piesang Valley Hall, where they came for the Mayoral State Address. The chairs were filled and the hall was full to capacity at 18H15 for the event started at 19H00. The Jazz band “Take Note” from PE kept the people entertained as the music took them in the world of Jimmy Dludlu and other jazz legends, the sound of saxophone was powerful in a way that no matter how hard you put your foot on the ground, it made you step it up and down wit the rhythm and the head moves forward and backwards without noticing what you are doing. Then later a lady came to join the band on vocals, what a beautiful sweet voice with a Xhosa song “Ndicel’ ubuye sthandwa sam. After the band Bitou executive mayor arrived with his wife, deputy mayor and Bitou councilors accompanied by military men who were parading then the national anthem was sung lead by Kika Opera Monstrances who’ll host a concert this coming Sunday evening at the same venue. After the introduction of the VIP guests that included the mayor of Mogale City Mr. Kelvin Serame (who never missed any of the Bitou state of the town address) and Prt St. Johns municipality manager Mr. Zola Hewu and councilors,. The program director Cllr. L. Luiters did not waste time as he called upon Mr. Lulama Mvimbi to proceed with state of the town speech which everybody was looking forward to. He was welcomed by a praise singer. Ald. Mvimbi reminded the residents about the historical incidents that
