32 rivals for SSG post

In preparation for the elections on Tuesday, August 22, a Miting de Avance (grand rally) was conducted on August 18 at the Leyte Progressive High School, Inc. (LPHSI) gymnasium which provided the final opportunity for the candidates to showcase their willingness to serve the student body.

A total of 32 candidates filed their candidacy, expressing their willingness to fill the positions needed for the Supreme Student Government (SSG). The 32 candidates were divided into two parties: AXONE and PARTY. AXONE (pronounced “As One”) is headed by the party’s presidential candidate Kirstin Gilliane Escoto; while PARTY is headed by Jade Gabrielle Gagarin, the party’s presidential candidate.

The Miting de Avance was scheduled to start at 10:00 am. However, technical difficulties and other factors lead the event to start 30 minutes later than scheduled. The parties were greeted by a cloudy

weather but it provided no resistance as they continued an elegant and energetic entrance.

However, chaos during the presentation wasn’t avoided as some of the candidates stuttered and scrummage during their speeches. On the bright side, the platforms were delivered vividly. Interestingly, both parties seemed to present platforms that are almost identical.

After all the discussions, the candidates were able to answer the questions presented in the Q&A portion. Through this, they’re able to conceptualize their weaknesses and ideals, and most importantly as to how they will be as future student leaders of LPHS.

The Miting de Avance was ended with Peace Information Officers sharing parting words to the audience and as to why the students should vote for them in the upcoming elections.

PSA-RSSO 8 holds Poster Making Contest

Aimed to showcase the artistic skills of the students of Tacloban City, the Philippine Statistics Authority – Regional Statistical Services Office VIII (PSA-RSSO 8) organized a Poster Making Contest today, January 31, 2024 at the Activity Area of Gaisano-Real, Tacloban City.

With the theme, “CRVS: The Future of Seamless Services”, Mr. Jimmy Dagupan—Registration Officer IV of PSA-RSSO 8–hopes that the artistic side of the students will be unleashed in the said competition. “When you do your illustrations, keep in mind those [civil registration] processes to give justice to the services offered by the PSA,” Dagupan said during his welcoming message for the said competition.

In the earlier part of his talk, Dagupan shared a quick overview on the process of civil registration, together with its new and old processes.

The said competition was participated by 5 schools in Tacloban City — Leyte National High School (LNHS), Leyte Normal University –Integrated Laboratory School (LNU-ILS), Cirilo Roy Montejo National High School (CRMNHS), Liceo del Verbo Divino (LVD), and Leyte Progressive High School, Inc. (LPHSI). All schools, except LNHS, sent 2 participants into the said

competition.

Sketching Seamless Services

The students were given 2 hours to complete their artwork. All of their artworks should center around the theme of the 34th Civil Registration Month—CRVS: The Future of Seamless Services. After which, all of their artworks will be displayed for judging at the Regional Office of PSA from February 1 to 28, 2024.

Judging of the artworks will be done on February 22, 2024, just in time for the Regional Interagency Committee Meeting. The people attending the said meeting will be the judges of the displayed artworks.

Announcement of winners will be done via the official Facebook page of PSA-RSSO 8 (Philippine Statistics Authority – Eastern Visayas).

“I call for disqualification!”

While the competition was on-going, a coach from one of the schools called the attention of the organizers, citing the disqualification of participants who have pre-made sketches of their artworks and using them as guides in the competition.

“I call for disqualification! You are not supposed to bring any copies of your previous

sketches to any poster-making contest! You’re not following the guidelines!” exclaimed the coach, which can be heard by all participants and spectators of the competition.

The organizers immediately took action on this matter and confiscated the guiding copies while also taking note of the schools.

However, upon closer review of the contest’s mechanics and guidelines, the guidelines didn’t specify the prohibition of copy guides during the contest proper.

Furthermore, the organizers also talked with the coaches of all participating schools informing them of the actions the organizers have taken to address the issue raised during the conduct of the competition.

On the other hand, a motorcade was organized to kick-off the Civil Registration Month on the morning of the same day. Followed right after was an opening program that was attended by key officials and employees of PSA-RSSO 8.

In an interview, a staff of PSA-RSSO 8 shared that this is the 1st poster-making contest the office organized.

(We visit schools now because when the time came that the parents were informed to register their child for the national ID, their frequent reason was that the original copy of their child’s live birth certificate is with the school.)

This school-to-school drive of the PSA-PhilSys has been around since August 2023. The team of Amante covers the following areas: Santa Fe, Babatangon, Palo, and Tacloban City. All public schools under the Tacloban City Division are already finished, and among the private schools, Leyte Progressive High School, Inc. (LPHSI) is the 7th school the team had visited for this.

Amante shared that in cases where the photo on the ID is no longer recognizable, all correspondence will be addressed to their satellite offices at Robinson’s North Tacloban and at Gaisano Real.

“An mga IDs na may wrong info or misprint, pwede ito mareplace for free. Para naman han mga may sayop an personal information, original birth certificate an required para hito. MATATAG Curriculum: DepEd’s New Panacea?

As this school year comes to a close, the preparations for the next has already started. With the coming implementation of the new curriculum, Matatag Curriculum, the educational system of the country will greatly change and produce different kinds of working individuals. Although, it is quite uncertain whether this change will be beneficial for the Philippines or will it push it further away from its goals.

Introduced on January 30, 2023 by DepEd Secretary and Vice-President Sara Z. Duterte, the Matatag curriculum aims to address educational challenges, seeking to prioritize the mastery of literacy and numeracy skills among learners. Additionally, it also aims to reduce the number of competencies and to focus more on the development of foundational skills such as literacy, numeracy, and socio-emotional skills. Furthermore, the said curriculum will put emphasis on five important skills: language, reading and literacy, mathematics, makabansa, and good manners and right conduct.

For school year 20242025, the Matatag curriculum will be implemented for the

Kindergarten, Grade 1, Grade 4, and Grade 7 classes.

In order to obtain new skills, it is necessary to keep updating our educational system. By removing the unnecessary competencies in the curriculum, the students will be able to allocate their time in learning more on the important life skills and knowledge to be able to fit in society better.

It was clear that the Kto12 curriculum did not meet its goals, thus the formation of this new curriculum. It was evident that the Kto12 curriculum was ineffective in molding globally competitive learners as the reflected in the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA),

where it shows that the Philippines is one of the countries near the bottom.

To be able to successfully pull off the implementation of the Matatag Curriculum, it is important to have proper funding, as one of the other problems regarding education is the lack of resources such as classrooms, textbooks, and many more. With these changes, this could help the students be able to keep up with the international standards.

The Philippines is one of the countries that had great economic growth over the past five years. To be able to maintain this, the need to keep improving is important. Thus, looking back and

correcting or improving the mistakes or flaws the Philippines have will be the solution to help make the Philippines a first world country.

As Solomon Ortiz once wrote, “Education is the key to success in life, and teachers make a lasting impact in the lives of their students.”

Thus, having a curriculum that works, meets the needs of the learners, and is globally competitive, is essential in molding life-long learners.

We can all hope that the Matatag curriculum addresses that.

Voters come in and out, but the future seems so dull with students expressing no interest to choose better leaders for a better future for our alma mater. Is this the future we wish? Or have we, the students, given up in choosing our leaders and blind ourselves from better possibilities?

As the students roamed around the campus, it felt so normal. Too normal. Today is the day we change our fate, our future. The quality of our school life this year is dependent on our vote, but why are we so unbothered? Why does it feel like the outcome of today won’t affect our tomorrow?

Today, the youth of our school see this event as an excuse: a way to cut classes shorter than the regular class schedules, procrastinate and rest. A day that is supposedly a a day where they can exercise their right to suffrage, turned into a cruel joke. Students vote for the sake of voting, some teachers stretching time so as not to hold classes, and we all just went along with it because why not?

The running candidates are all on the edge of their seats—waiting, anticipating—as they think of the various ways they can better our school, while the students all run around, caring about nothing but themselves.

August 23, 2023 is the date the elections for this school year’s student council have been held rather loosely

by our school. At around 1:40 in the afternoon, students from Grades 4 to 12 were called to cast their votes and shape our future.

The students were a bundle of chaos, each batch of voters becoming louder than the last. The hallways were rowdy, students hid in their respective classrooms and overall, it did not look like any proper election.

Democracy is the heart of every organization; we are given a choice to better our chances in our education. Our vote matters, the freedom of choice is a privilege, why are we wasting this chance to shape our school life into how we envision it? In choosing our leaders, we are given the option to maximize the resources both the student council and the school can

offer. The power lies on the people, not the leaders.

Change starts with us, and how we select the people who guide us into a greater future. When we disregard our power as an individual, our community loses power in changing our alma mater, which will reflect how our leaders respond to community issues inside our school. Giving a second to listen, to consider each candidate, we can insure that we are voting for our alma mater and not just because we had no other choice but to vote for that particular candidate.

Choosing future leaders of the school should be something that would excite us: like receiving love messages from a special someone; and not to be treated just like any other day.

FEATURE Da-Math: A Game of Wits and Skills

After two years of hiatus, the 8x8 boardgame that originated from the Philippines is back at Leyte Progressive High School, Inc. (LPHSI).

Da-Math, short for Dama Math, is a competitive educational game aimed at enhancing math skills, and is widely used in schools to make learning Math engaging and fun. Competing in Da-Math benefits a learner by improving Math skills, increasing student’s engagement, and developing critical thinking, as the students strive to earn recognition within the education community.

Students from different grade levels eagerly battle to bring home the gold for their grade level. The compeition had three categories: Novice Level (Grades 4 to 6), Junior Level (Grades 7 to 9), and the Senior Level (Grades 10 to 12). Xander Vy and Zyra M. Peñaranda reigned supreme in Cluster B, while Shawn Matthew S. Vy and Matt Andi G. Lombrio outsmarted their opponents in Cluster C. Lastly, Kathlyn L. Montero outwitted her competitors in Cluster D.

Truly, the Da-Math competition has proven to be more than just a Mathematical contest. It is a platform for nurturing mathematical talent, fostering camaraderie among students, and igniting a passion for numbers. These contestants will be the future of the nation: students of today, mathematicians of tomorrow.

Science Fair ‘23: An Exhibit of Skills and Hardwork

A. GAGARIN

There are numerous things that we do not know about our world, but the mysteries we have discovered and learned about, are piled up in a subject we now know as science. In its efforts to advance Science and Math education, Leyte Progressive High School, Inc. (LPHSI) fronts a Science Fair competition where the students can create and compete to see who has the best invention for the future of our society.

The groups were given time to create their projects, presenting them during the culminating day for the Science and Math Month. The competition was open to all grade levels and the winner has yet to be decided. This fostered creativity from the contestants as they had free will on the projects they were to create. Utilizing their endless imagination and harbored knowledge to create the best model they think can benefit the future of the nation.

With this, the event succeeded with a bang, where the goal was to enhance the creativity and knowledge of the students. This event was conducted in a way where the students who participated won’t ever forget the struggles and successes they felt once they finished their project. While there may have been lapses during the event, each of us must remember that a mistake is a turning point to the right path, and one should use this experience to be better, now with the knowledge as how to correct the errors made.

From NEY to SLAYYYY!

Over the century, human activities have contributed heavily towards air, water, and land pollution. In the last decade, this was worsened by the increasing demand for luxury. Now, humans noticed the effects on the Earth, prompting a trend for upcycling and recycling, with the vision of a pro-environment.

Leyte Progressive High School, Inc. (LPHSI), joins the trend by organizing the Eco Fashion Show, with the theme “Science and Math: Foundation of Innovative Today and Tomorrow”. This not only help our planet reduce waste but also encourages creativity from our fellow Progressionist, developing the minds of the students, enforces the stability of the future. The said Eco-Fashion Show is one of the activities organized by the institution in observance of the celebration of the Science and Math Month 2023.

Through this event, we can spread awareness on certain envIronmental issues, and show that treasures can be created from what we consider worthless. The fashion show was a powerful platform that not only grabs our attention but also leaves a lasting impression, hopefully towards climate change actions and environment preservation.

Reminiscing the Past and Moving onto the Future

As the pandemic fades away into the distant past and everyone seems to be moving forward towards the future, struggles on adjusting to the current situation due to the post-pandemic events seemed to become prevalent.

With this in mind, Leyte Progressive High School, Inc. (LPHSI) holds its yearly event, the acquaintance party, with the goal to help everyone get acquainted with one another as we adapt to the fast-paced world and as we open a new school year.

This year, the Supreme Student Government (SSG) planned the event thoroughly and made sure to provide endless entertainment to the students, having fun-filled games for everyone to enjoy and cherish forever. With small interactive events such as bring me and sack race, they were able to entertain the Progressionists ‘til the end of the event.

There were also energetic performances from selected classes that included, but not limited to, singing and dancing performances. The students are able to enjoy multiple sources of entertainment as they eat and enjoy making new acquaintances.

As the event ends, this year’s acquaintance was a way for students to use their God-given talents to get acquainted with one another, building friendships that will last for a lifetime. These acquaintances, whether they bring joy or sorrow, will be remembered throughout their lives.

#ForeverThankful

September 28, 2023 at Leyte Progressive High School, Inc. is a very special day for our dear educators. Various faces are seen throughout the school as the celebration of teachers day starts.

At the gates of the school, vendors sold their well-crafted bouquets to students, with each one being beautiful than the last, showcasing the students’ appreciation to their teachers.

As a new student in this school, many uncertainties came upon me as starting anew is somewhat difficult, and that adapting to this new environment is challenging.

Celebrating teacher’s day is truly a highlight for the school as it develops a deeper bond between the teachers and students.

As I get ready for the program to start, mixed emotions filled my head for I know this event will be a memorable one. Seeing the students, the staff, and especially the teachers come together gave me chills, making me remember all the memories I had with previous teacher’s day celebrations.

Everyone settled as the mass was about to begin. The mass started this fruitful gathering. An appropriate gesture we begin the day with a prayer to the Lord and give thanks for today’s event.

After the mass, we all got time to prepare for the program. As we waited for the event to unravel, all I could think of is what will happen next?

Being informed that the program will soon begin made me excited. Going down the stairs with the others students with their bright smiles and joyful screams heard all over the school. Arriving at the gym, I felt as the atmosphere changed the mood in a swoop. Looking back, this feeling is quite similar to my previous celebrations of teachers day—teachers laughing, children playing, and everyone having fun—made me hope for this day to not end.

As the program officially started, we could only abide to the instructions of the SSG. It brought a smile on my face watching the pre-elementary pupils run around the gymnasium as the SSG officers tried to calm them down.

Once the teachers were called, we sat in anticipation. As thy entered the venue, we, the students, gave our cheerful screams and ap-

plause as a sign of gratitude for their unending hard work in teaching, guiding us, and molding us to become better members of the society.

Being the highlight of the event, giving thanks and gratitude to the teachers was seen throughout the school. As they run to their teachers, I stand still, reminiscing on those teachers I’ve expressed my thanks in the past. Wow, I’ve been through the hands of multiple teachers already!

The celebration of teachers day is truly an important day as it creates connection between the teachers and students. This day will be a core memory for me and an experience that will forever change my perspective about LPHSI, encouraging me to be a better person and student, being able to recognize all the hard work of everyone around me.

As the day came to an end, I will always be #ForeverThankful to all teachers for their undying passion towards teaching. A day is not enough to celebrate all your sacrifices for us, your students. Nevertheless, thank you very much!

A teacher’s priceless love

u JANILA MAE R. ALBENTO

In these hallowed halls, I find myself behind walls. A story about the love that is untold and behold For in these walls, my heart’s whisper finds its cause, A symphony of life, where every note is a student’s light.

Laughter graces the air, A serenade to my senses, a scenic flair. In those eager eyes, in the innocence they wear, Love’s reflection shimmers, beyond compare.

And now, I stand in front of the halls. Listening to their lullaby of the graduation. In this moment, their stories begin anew, As they step into the world, they admire the view.

The love for my students, a river deep and wide, In silent devotion, through delight and through fright, Until their success tolls, a treasure to hold, I’ll be the voice, the memory, deep in their soul.

Cheers to New Beginnings

u KATHLYN L. MONTERO

In midst of bustling crowd, with smiles we ponder, Will this new beginning grace us with wonder?

A party for all, people unite, Seeking bonds to forge, with wonderful delight. From old to new, students and teachers alike, Acknowledging the dawn of a fresh, with a hopeful light.

Leaving our comfort zones, we’ll dare to explore, Together, we’ll go places we’ve not been before.

Trials we’ll face, yet cheers will surface, Cheers to the brave, thanks to those by our side, Facing the future, together we’ll stride.

And in the unknowns ahead, we’ll find a way, With friends and support, come what may. Familiar faces or strangers we may see, In this new beginning, we’ll be a family.

Challenges may test us, it’s true, we confess, Yet perhaps, in each other’s embrace, we’ll find blessedness.

In this beginning, though not entirely fair, Beyond our dreams, we’ll strive for the skies. We’ll be there for each other, a bond that will never die. It may not be as good to us, but we’ll be stronger together.

In this world of wonder, we meet face to face, A family forming, in this unknown place. Welcome to the new, and thanks to the old, Cheers to the beginning, our stories yet untold.

A woe within the storm

Lit candles illuminated the dark streets of my hometown. All the people stood, praying in silence. Each candle has a story, a woe during the tragedy of 10 years ago.

I was young back then; I couldn’t do much. I was a thoughtless victim, watching my parents panic in fear as the looming danger of the typhoon slowly approached the region. They—no—we were scared. But my youthful mind could not understand what fear was. I did not know how to be scared, and I do not know if that was a good thing.

The storm was unforgiving, like the world has sinned against it. Its grudge was so strong it swept humanity in a blow. The harsh winds sounded like cries. Its eerie wails were the music of the storm, its complement almost. As the people around me sat in horror, my eyes glazed over to their faces. Distraught—that was the emotion I saw. They harbored eyes that reflect nothing; so expressionless, yet so human. Then I turned

to my mother, whose eyes were as human as they could ever be. The love in her eyes was the only warm thing at that hour, yet the lost expression in her aged face was the coldest thing the whole day.

As the sun brightened the world after the storm, still, the storm made it cold. Our town was flooded, and the sky still cried. The winds carried humanities hard labor: the roofs of the houses of my neighbors, the walls of their homes, and the parts of their livelihoods.

As the tears from the sky fell slower than before, the people started to go to their homes, may it be their house, family, animals, and livelihoods. I saw the agony in their eyes as they saw the damage of their home, of where they felt at ease and loved, all torn

apart in one morning.

The sun shined brighter days after the storm wreaked havoc. Its harsh rays beamed towards the devastation. It burned my skin, as it burns everything else. The lands ran dry, and life was harder than it was before. My father’s sweat dripped from his forehead as he ends his hard labor. As I stood to gaze, I saw the destruction and suffering the typhoon had caused. Truly, mother nature is a powerful force.

What transpired that day is something that will remain in my memory forever—a core memory they say, because even if I was young and unable to comprehend everything that happened that day, the experience became a part of me.

he

Once on a yellow piece of paper with green lines, ‘he’ wrote a poem. It wasn’t as compelling nor captivating as one must’ve expected but it was considered acceptable, decent or reasonable. Though, it almost felt like a sprite to spare his grades, a sensible prudence that something was wrong. The yellow piece of paper would’ve been appreciated, as his handwriting was legible, well-scripted however, it was past submission period and the paper was a crumpled mess.

As the Teacher scanned around the classroom, Sir Arthur caught eyes with him. ‘He’ was clad in a faded sooty-colored school uniform that was scrapped out of mass produced fabric that was stained. His eyes were aged, seemingly strained like asthenopia. Everything that enveloped him seemed dirty. However, he simply appeared to seem like a slightly muddy child that needed to be cleaned up.

As time went on, ‘He’ was on the brink of failing as lack of compliance for his Academic output was already concerning. Time after time, he would often skip class. Late, or absent, he’d suddenly disappear for various periods.

It wasn’t for long until his Teacher had enough. He was concerned for his well-being and tried to find the cause. Looking around, He noticed a yellow piece of paper but it didn’t have green lines like his poem did. He dug around and found his Learners Reference Number (LRN) then checked his background. Sir Arthur was astonished to find his history. Despite the student having a hostile aggressive behavior, ‘he’ was surprisingly a consecutive honor student back then. How such confusion enthralled the Teacher. It was not long until such time Sir Arthur had also come across his domestic issues. The teacher finally understood the anguish and agony his student was facing in life.

His Mother had been diagnosed with Anaplastic Astrocytoma and underwent chemotherapy treatments. It wasn’t long until his family also encountered a financial crisis due to medical expenses. His Father was elicited and conveyed his stress by taking his anger on him and in the last minute, he took drinking as a coping mechanism then passed due to alcohol poisoning. Not long after, His Mother had also passed due to her diagnosis, leaving him as an orphan with unresolved grief. Some students have gone through so much of a hard time that it becomes a core to their upbringings and who they are.

Excessively saddened, the teacher felt empathy; it gave him a duty as a teacher, as their primary role is to play the role of the secondary parents of the students. He promised to help him get over his hardships in life and learn to step forward as well.

Sir Arthur had started assisting the student from time to time, throughout academic one on one tutorials, to just simple small talks about life, frequently guide him through life, teaching not only his subjects, but philosophy of living freely. ‘He’ started to have peace of mind after a while and soon enough he seemed more uplifted and enlightened. His demeanor had gone from one which gazes’ were melancholic to an encouraging expression.

‘He’ slowly made his way through the rankings as his clarity eased due to his Teacher. As time went on ‘he’ attended his school’s competitions, from math, science, English and everything else. ‘He’ aced and shined, just like how he was before his hardships.

A long time had passed ever since Sir Arthur had discovered and guided his student, and how people grow will always change who they are. ‘He’ no longer had anything that resembled who he was in the beginning of the school year and now it is about time he will graduate.

Sir Arthur had felt heart touched, as it seemed like he achieved an accomplishment as a Teacher. Although it was sad, Sir Arthur was glad that his student had graduated and will continue to live his life better, as he had guided him accordingly. It was a great experience for both, a student and a teacher to co-exist and benefit from one another.

After a long period had passed and Sir Arthur had aged accordingly, He still cherishes his moments with his beloved student and often ponders what has happened ever since.

It soon caught Sir Arthur in surprise as he received a letter addressed to him. Carefully opening the envelope, He comes to see a yellow piece of paper with green lines. He let out a smile as it resembled the first poem ‘he’ had ever submitted to him. Now it was compelling, and captivating in contrast to their old days. The biggest detail was that it was neatly folded and no longer crumpled.

Hello, Sir Arthur!

How are you doing? It has been quite a while since I have ever visited nor heard from you. Thank you for guiding me in finding inspiration in life when I was at the lowest point in mine. I truly appreciate all the things you have done for me and I’m extremely grateful. I am convinced I could have never reached this far without you. As of now, I have graduated from Medical School and am now heading to become a resident of the City’s hospital.

I have taken the career path of a neurosurgeon.

Sincerely, Dr. Roman

Sir Arthur casted a soft smile across his face. He was glad that Roman, his former student, still acknowledged him throughout the years.

He felt content knowing that he had succeeded as a teacher, a second parent to help shape his students into the people they wish to become when they grow up, each having a huge impact on their lives.

Sir Arthur then sipped coffee from the rim of his old mug, which displayed a very special print.

“Happy Teacher’s Day, Sir!

From: Roman”

Since the dawn of time I’ve been a silent entity Watching your story unfold, it was indeed quite a sight to see

As I rise in the sky with golden light, I’ve graced your land with my rays so bright.

When the sun descends and I reign the sky, All that’s left is the memory of days gone by. Through the darkest night when shadows take hold. I became your beacon, a hope to guide your soul.

In my celestial watch, I’ve witnessed joy and sorrow Your smiles, your tears, you live like there’s no tomorrow, From high above, I watch with pride, The endeavours of your people standing with all it’s might.

When my light reflects upon the tranquil sea’s embrace. I may not be blessed to see it face to face. Yet I’ll cast my gentle light upon your peaceful land. Embracing those that no longer stand.

We’ve been your silent witnesses throughout the years. Your tale continues, overcoming all blood, sweat and tears.

And as your people find solace in our light. From the beginning until the end, we’ll be your guiding sight.

As the sun, I witness your unwavering might. And the moon softly glows in your weary eyes at night. In your enduring existence, it’s been a hundred and four. We wish you well, may you continue to explore forevermore.

The Land of Wonders

“Wow, the outfits look so great, Naiah!” My best friend—Ally— yelled, her eyes on the screen. Me, who was minding my own business, of course, agreed without even batting an eye. Well, It’s not like I don’t care; Ally just has weird taste, particularly in fashion. She likes the old fashion, different from mine. What looks great to her is actually just mediocre to my eyes, no offense.

She kept on complimenting whatever was on her screen, and in exchange, I simply replied with ‘hmmm’ and ‘yes’. My best friend noticed my nonchalant behavior; she, who was focused, suddenly slammed the desk and looked at me with knives in her eyes. So, I looked back at her as I waited for whatever she was about to say.

“Naiah!” she screeched.

“What?” I responded calmly.

My response put her off; she was trying to say something, the words stuck in the tip of her tongue. Yet, instead of saying it, she stormed out of my room. With a bang, my door was closed shut. I didn’t take her seriously though, this was just a normal reoccurrence in our everyday lives. I turned my eyes to my phone once more.

Thinking that finally, peace surrounds my room, the door made a creak sound. I looked up, and

there she was. She bared eyes that looked like she would cry any second now. With an aggrieved face, she said, “You will never appreciate it until you see it yourself!” And slammed the door again. I was dumbfounded.

“Okay, whatever you say,’ I said to myself as I fell asleep.

Dark....

Darkness is all I see; the surroundings felt so unfamiliar to me. I didn’t feel my bed at all; it felt like I was sitting down. Oh wait.. pardon me, I was wrong. It was dark because my eyes were closed...

Once I opened my eyes, blinding lights were all that I could see; lights of different colors were focused on the... crowd?

What crowd?

Music unknown to me was playing in the background. Although with blurry eyes, I could tell, I was somewhere different. The vibe was not the same. This vibe gave off the past, and it felt somehow great.

When my sight finally became clear, I was faced with a crowd of unknown faces. Their outfits seemed so new to me. Weird..

‘What’s up with this? Did I somehow manage to go back in the

past?” I asked myself “Impossible,” I murmured. Then what happened? My thoughts dived deeper. The sound changed, the crowd started shouting and vibing and... ahh. They kept bringing random people sitting on the dance floor. I looked at my hand, resting on my lap, and realized I was sitting like them. Cold sweat ran down from my forehead, fearing someone would suddenly drag me there, just like everybody else. No, please. It would be a nightmare. While I was trying to hide my presence, a hand suddenly grabbed my wrist.

Oh no.

Without noticing, I was on the dance floor.

While I was regretting my life decisions, the lights dimmed off, and later on, the surroundings brightened up, the music changing into a slower song. Because of this, I was able to see everything clearly.

I noticed firsthand the weird outfits of the crowd. Well, it was weird but breathtaking at the same time. The people looked so elegant and confident wearing it. It looked so old-fashioned... old-fashioned? The sudden realization hit me. Why had I not I thought of this? The environment,

clothes, and aura were so close to the past. It was so new to me. This feels so much like a land of wonder.

With the realization, I had no hesitation in me. I vibed with the crowd and danced my heart out. Talking to the people, complimenting their dresses. I was busy living in the moment. A moment of unknowingness. Despite being so unfamiliar with it, I learned how to love the beauty of the past. I loved the moment, really. And my best friend was right; I’ll never appreciate this if I didn’t see it myself. This is just so beautiful.

My eyes became blurry, and darkness consumed the surroundings once more.

A loud ring woke me. As I looked at the mirror, I saw myself in the same outfit those people in my dream were wearing. It looked so pretty on me. My door made a creak sound. It was my best friend

“I left my phone...” She paused halfway through her sentence. There she was, with eyes that looked so confused yet filled with joy. “Naiah, you look so beautiful” she complimented. I smiled.

“No. The outfit is beautiful,” I uttered. ‘The past was beautiful,’ I added to my mind.

2 Filipinos killed in missile attack in the Gulf of Aden

An image obtained from the US Central Command (CENTCOM) on March 6, 2024 shows the Barbados-flagged, Liberian-owned bulk carrier after it was hit by an anti-ship ballistic missile (ASBM) launched by Iranian-backed Houthi rebels in the Gulf of Aden.

On Thursday, the Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed two Filipino crew members were killed in the attack, while two others were severely injured.

“We are also informed that two other Filipino crewmen were severely injured in the attack on their ship,” the Department of Migrant Workers added.

Manila is liaising with the ship owners and its crewing agency “to ascertain the conditions of the rest of the ship’s crew” and to repatriate them, the department said.

An anti-ship ballistic missile struck the Barbados-flagged, Liberian-owned M/V True Confidence, after which its crew reported “three fatalities, at least four injuries, of which three are in critical condition, and significant damage to the ship”, the US Central Command said in a statement.

Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree wrote on social media that the True Confidence was targeted with missiles “after the ship’s crew rejected warning messages” from the rebels.

The Iran-backed group began attacking ships in the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea last November, a campaign they say is intended to signal solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza.

Manila is still seeking the release of 17 Filipinos taken hostage by the Huthis in November after the rebels seized their ship in the Red Sea.

Suspension of face-to-face classes due to extreme heat allowed: DepEd

The Department of Education reiterated Tuesday, March 12, that face-to-face classes may be suspended in localities affected by extreme heat brought on by the dry season and the El Nino phenomenon.

This, after Bacolod Mayor Albee Benitez announced suspension of face-to-face classes in both public and private schools and universities in elementary and secondary levels in Bacolod City after PAGASA’s forecast of a high heat index on March 11 and 12.

“Last year meron nang situation na ganito at nakapag-issue na tayo ng directives last year para sa mga field offices na maaaring mag-suspend ng face to face classes...kung sobrang init na talaga ang nararamdaman sa kanilang mga school,” DepEd deputy spokesperson Asec. Francis Bringas said in a TeleRadyo Serbisyo interview.

Classes automatically shift to modular distance learning on the event of the suspension of face-to-face classes, Bringas said.

Local government officials and even school heads can announce the suspension of face-to-face classes based on the PAGASA heat index forecast, the official said. “’Yung PAGASA meron silang ginagamit na scale at pag umaabot na sa scale na masyado nang mainit, kinakailangan na nilang mag-suspend,” he said.

Face-to-face classes in Western Visayas are set to resume by March 13.

Eldred Dino A. Lim, last year’s MVP is set to light the torch tomorrow, signalling the formal opening and start of the weeklong sporting event. Expected to grace the event tomorrow are the different house masters and their members, as well as the faculty and staff of the school, and parents and guardians of the learners.

This year’s Intramural Games is anchored on the theme, “PAGKAURUSA: Uniting the Four Realms through Sportsmanship and Camaraderie.”

Japan issues tsunami warning after strong earthquakes in the Sea of Japan

TOKYO — Japan issued a Tsunami warning after a series of strong earthquakes struck the Sea of Japan on New Year’s Day.

Quakes occurred off the coast of Ishika and nearby prefectures after 4 p.m. local time (2 a.m. ET) with one reaching a magnitude of 7.6, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.

The agency issued tsunami warnings to the coastal prefectures of Ishikawa, Niigata and Toyama. Tremors were felt in Tokyo, Japan’s capital.

Japanese public broadcaster NHK TV warned the waves could reach as high as 5 meters (16.5 feet) and urged people on the entire west coast to escape to the highest place as soon as possible.

The tallest wave so far was 1.2 meters (around 4 feet) detected at Wajima Port in Ishikawa at 5:21 p.m (3:21 a.m. ET), according to Japan’s Nippon TV, but had not yet breached the port’s defenses.

Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said to the reporters at his office shortly after the warnings that the government will provide information to the public as soon as possible.

He added that they will ascertain the extent of damages and injuries swiftly, and work closely with the local governments to ensure public safety.

More than 2,000 homes in Ishikawa and Toyama prefectures are experiencing blackouts, Nippon TV reported.

PAGASA declares onset of rainy season

u JOSE RAFAEL N. TIU

The state weather bureau

PAGASA on Wednesday, May 29, declared the start of the rainy season in the country.

In a statement, PAGASA said significant rain has been observed in the past few days over the western sections of Luzon and Visayas due to the occurrence of scattered rain showers, frequent thunderstorms, the passage of Typhoon Aghon, and the Southwest Monsoon (Habagat).

‘’Moreover, the high chance of La Niña conditions [developing] by the July-August-Sep-

tember period increases the likelihood of above-normal rainfall conditions in some areas of the country, especially towards the end of the year,’’ it said.

However, PAGASA said there may be breaks in rainfall that extend over a few days or weeks.

According to PAGASA, at least 25 mm of rainfall should be experienced for five days, with at least 1 mm for three consecutive days for the wet season to be officially declared.

Strong geomagnetic storm reaches Earth, continues through weekend

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) space weather forecasters have observed at least seven coronal mass ejections (CMEs) from the sun, with impacts expected to arrive on Earth as early as midday Friday, May 10, and persist through Sunday, May 12, 2024.

NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) has issued a Geomagnetic Storm Warning for Friday, May 10. Additional solar eruptions could cause geomagnetic storm conditions to persist through the weekend.

CMEs are explosions of plasma and magnetic fields from the sun’s corona. They cause geomagnetic storms when they are directed at Earth. Geomagnetic storms can impact infrastructure in near-Earth orbit and on Earth’s surface, potentially disrupting communications, the electric power grid, navigation, radio and satellite operations. SWPC has notified the operators of these systems so they can take protective action.

Geomagnetic storms can also trigger spectacular displays of aurora on Earth. A severe geomagnetic storm includes the potential for aurora to be seen as far south as Alabama and Northern California.

PH, Japan to hold joint research on water concerns

Researchers from Japan and the Philippines will work together in finding solutions to address water concerns such as lack of potable water in far-flung areas, an official of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) said Tuesday.

“There are many issues that our local and international experts would like to address. These include the lack of potable water in far-flung communities here and in Japan,”

DOST Undersecretary Leah Buendia told the Philippine News Agency.

Representatives from the DOST and their counterpart from the Japan Science and Technology (JST) Agency recently met to discuss joint research works.

Buendia said one of the solutions that could be done locally is water treatment through a membrane process.

A researcher from Japan has shared that moringa seed

could be used as coagulant in the pretreatment of seawater, she said.

Moringa seed is locally available, making it accessible for the communities in the Philippines.

The JST has allocated JPY24 million while the DOST has allotted PHP10 million for their researchers, for joint research projects that should be finished not later than three years.

Among the concepts they would work on are solutions to water security and shortage, advanced technology for innovative water desalination, sustainable management and optimization of water resources, and water resilience.

Buendia said both countries would open a call for proposals on June 17. They will apply the same time frame and guidelines.

“They must be able to talk to their counterparts prior to

submitting the proposal. They must craft their proposal together, and send these before July 24,” she said.

Filipino researchers can send the joint initiative through the DOST Project Management Information System website, and Japanese researchers via their country’s Research and Development Management System (e-Rad) portal.

Depending on the proposals they would receive, Buendia said it is possible that several proposals could be chosen.

The DOST and JST will conduct a parallel review of the proposals, and the joint research projects would start in December.

Buendia, meanwhile, said depending on the project’s objective, the finished project could be up for commercialization, or the gathered data submitted to lawmakers for policy formulation.

Where are the Progressionists?

Intramurals, the week long event that showcases the students’ prowess of sports. The opening program that transpired during Day 1 formally kicked off the week long event. But, the institution feels empty, the energy is yet to be felt.

In the past years, the Sportsfest is one of the most hyped events aside from the Founding Week Anniversary. Students and parents alike participate on creating the atmosphere we feel in these weeks.

This year, the atmosphere is certainly different. The Founding Week Anniversary was fun but different in contrast to previous years. But in the case of the Sportsfest, the atmosphere is no where to be found. From volleyball to badminton, it seems to be attended by just the athletes. The cheers and presence of the members are missing.

This is supposed to be our time to showcase leadership and followership, however, the houses seem to be in chaos. Disregarding the main goal of this year’s intramurals of uniting the four realms. This time is supposed to be a time to build lifelong friendship may it be within the house or not. The games are not created for someone to shine above others rather a platform for practicing sportsmanship, camaraderie and to de-stress from the hectic and labor-intensive academics.

For others, this would be their last year in high-school, the prime time of education for many reasons, such as the foundation of our learning, lifelong bonds, and a time for practical decision making. Instead of being competitive and potentially breaking friendships and developing hatred towards one another, its better to enjoy these moments and cherish the memories we created.

The future is in our hands. Progressionists, lets have fun and unite the four realms in order to choose appropriately our student-athletes who will be representing our alma mater in inter-school sports meet.

EJ Obiena clinches

silver in Norway’s Oslo Bislett Games

u ROM ANZURES, ABS-CBN

EJ Obiena dealt with another broken pole during his Oslo Bislett Games campaign in Norway, but the Olympian still managed to pull through and clinch a medal finish.

This, after the Filipino Olympian finished at silver, just two days after he absorbed a seventh-place finish at the Ostrava Golden Spike in the Czech Republic.

Obiena, who saw his pole break yet again, cleared 5.72 meters which was good for second place, and was tied with Emmanouil Karalis of Greece.

“First Diamond League of the season here in Oslo and got silver with Emmanouil Karalis,” he wrote in a social media post, while also expressing his gratitude to first-placer KC Lightfoot and the Netherlands’s Menno Vloon.

“On the brighter side of things, thanks to Vloon and Lightfoot for lending me poles to jump on. Greatly appreciate it gentleman,” he continued.

Lightfoot cleared 5.82m to reign supreme in the nine-man tilt.

Meanwhile, USA’s Sam Kendricks, Germany’s Bo Kanda Lita Baehre, and Vloon also cleared 5.72m, but they respectively finished fourth, fifth, and sixth as a result of countback.

USA’s Christopher Nilsen placed at No. 7 with 5.62, Norway’s Simen Guttormsen is at No. 8 with 5.52, while France’s Thibaut Collet was last after he cleared 5.42.

Obiena is now headed to Stockholm for the Bauhaus-Galan leg of the Diamond League.

‘Stronger, Better, Together’ is theme of upcoming UAAP

Season 87

“Stronger, Better, Together” is the theme of the upcoming UAAP Season 87, slated to start on September 7, 2024.

The new tagline was revealed at the closing ceremony of UAAP Season 86 at the Mall of Asia Arena on Wednesday by Board of Managing Directors member Dolriech “Bo” Perasol, director of the Office of Athletics and Sports Development of the University of the Philippines (UP), host school for Season 87.

“The UAAP is the country’s premier collegiate league. Its popularity and success has grown exponentially through

u ABS-CBN NEWS

the years because it continues to grow, evolve and innovate.

It has introduced new sports, expanded divisions within existing sports and finds new ways to reach out and connect with its ever-increasing audiences,” Perasol said.

“‘Stronger, Better, Together’ is a call to the league to be unceasingly forward-looking and creative, and a reminder that the way to continuing success and relevance is to be one. Our mission is to inspire young athletes to compete and strive for excellence, but always to remember that we are one harmonious family and citizens of one nation. We

are all stronger and better if we are one. This is true not just in sports, but in all aspects of life,” he added.

The new Season 87 logo was not unveiled at the closing ceremony, but Perasol said it will reflect the theme and is inspired by the age-old image of hands in huddle. “The clenched, fighting fist of the UP team logo will do something different in the UAAP Season 87 logo,” teased Perasol.

“The central visual is open hands reaching out to each other in cooperation, coming together as one team, like in a

game huddle. As host, UP is at the top of the wheel and is extending the invitation to all the schools to come together and do great things for the league, for sports, for the sports community and for the country. We’re still finalizing the design.”

When finalized, the logo will reflect the Season 87 message and become a colorful wheel of passionate hues and team identities. Each school’s colors will be prominently featured but everything will come together as one image, one UAAP, Perasol explained.
