First title in its pioneer year: CCJE rep crowned Ms. UA

The first is female.

Fresh from its separation from College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), College of Criminal Justice Education (CCJE), a newly-established college with its population mostly represented by men had gained its first Ms. University of Antique (UA) on November 10 at the UA Cultural Center.

A Bachelor of Science in Criminology sophomore, April Grace M. Pactao-in marked the college’s historic milestone in the field of pageantry in its pioneering year when she clinched Ms. UA 2022 crown.

The CCJE stunner showed eloquence in her interviews that made her the eventual Best in Interview and President’s Choice awardee.

“As someone who brought home the first crown for our department, I want to set a standard also to my fellow Criminology students, hoping that all of us will strive for excellence... This is only the beginning and we made a lot in store, no doubt that students of UA are quality students worthy of being called Antique’s Pride... CCJE, the college that is sometimes outnumbered but never outfought,” Pactao-in said.

For her, it was hard to start from scratch being in a new college while preparing

for the Hugyaw week yet they can still show them that they got what it takes to be on top.

Nevertheless, it was not an easy win for Pactao-in as her close contender who was vying to retain the Ms. UA title for College of Business and Accountancy (CBA) begged almost all of the minor awards during the coronation night; the journey was not only a battle to be shinier that fellow beauties who are already shining but also a battle against self-doubt.

“I think having doubts is given when it comes to competitions especially when it comes to beauty pageants, you often feel intimidated by your fellow contestants. To be honest, not only was [Miss] CBA a great competition but most of them are. That is why I am really proud of myself being able to win the crown against so many amazing ladies also fighting for it,” she stated.

Pactao-in added that despite being the one crowned, she thinks all of them are winners that night and the memories they made together were greater than any crown.

Meanwhile, Erl Macavinta

IV of CBA, who according to him has long been eyed by his college to be its representative to the pageant since his freshman year ruled as the Mr. UA 2022 with Best in Production Number, Best in Swim Wear, Best in Interview, President’s Choice, and Best in Formal Wear awards in his name.

“I dedicate this title mostly to the One that peers from above. I’ve been raised to be grateful of what I’ve been given, and to me the biggest way of showing how grateful I am is by expressing, amplifying and finding a way to better my qualities given by His truly. And not only will I continue to improve my self-being, I will also use this given talent to influence and empower the people around me to further more push their limits and to find what they have is truly a special gift,” Macavinta explained.

He also stated that as the new Mr. UA, he can transform lives in allowing his actions speak louder that his words; to make change, to build a standard and to transform.

Moreover, he will be a leading figure to humility, compassion, acceptance and respect, and lastly, will let his advocacy, established platforms,

and the influence he had spread to bring out the good in everyone and to let everyone grow to be compassionate, understanding, and respectful.

One Step Closer To the Crown. Despite begging Best in Production Number, Best in Sports Wear Best in Swim Wear, and Best in Formal Wear, Ms. CBA Airene Joy Sabay finished as Ms. Hugyaw 2022, just a step closer to a back-to-back win for her college.

Alongside Sabay was Jeril Gayomali of College of Engineering and Architecture (CEA) who won the crowd in the final interview.

Among the candidates who made it to the top 5 were First Runners Up, Joshua Joseph Suarez from CAS and Donna Lee Hojilla of College of Teacher Education (CTE), Second Runners Up Rommel Andrei Manzanilla of UA-Tario Lim Memorial Campus (UA-TLMC) and Kia Joy Tunay of CAS, and Third Runners Up Mark James Moňedera of College of Maritime Studies (CMS) and Cheska Grace Yap of UA-TLMC.

CCJE laos kontra CMS sa Men’s

Basketball, 95-78

CTE-LHS Men, COT Women bag gold in Badminton

Yells from the College of Teacher EducationLaboratory High School (CTE-LHS) supporters filled the UA Cultural Center as CTE-LHS shuttlers sealed the gold medal in the neck to neck team match against the College of Technology (COT) during the championship game of the Men’s Badminton on Wednesday, November 9.

CTE-LHS Men’s Single A shuttler, Yvincent Cuevas, stormed Jade Frangue of COT with aces at the start of the match, while Frangue returned the favor and heated the first set with a nip and tuck rally.

Men’s championship court was blasted with CTELHS’s supporters’ cheers as the Men’s Single A match concluded with Cuevas overwhelming the opponent with

a 12 point gap for both the first and second set, (21-9, 219).

In the Doubles category, COT shuttlers, Justin Allan Juanico and Allan Alagos Jr., turned back Jason Obsiana and Jan Carlo Escaro of CTE-LHS, reciprocating the pressure to the opponent, (4-21, 17-21), with a barrage of flicks and kill shots obtaining a win for COT, (2-0).

With the team game regulation at play, the Men’s Single B match heated with strong defense by John Arnel Coloma of CTE-LHS against Novie Alit of COT, until Coloma obtained victory with a 9 point gap in the second set, (21-12), sealing the championship in men’s category for CTE-LHS, (2-0).

Meanwhile, Women COT shuttlers triumphed in the Single A match, (0-2), while CTE-LHS shuttlers fought back in the Doubles category, (2-0), setting the single B match as the deciding game where COT shuttler Nova Andrea Necor secured the gold for COT, (0-2).

“[I am] proud because I wasn’t expecting… and I am proud of myself because I tried my best. ([I am] proud because I wasn’t expecting… kag proud man ko sa kaugalingon ko kay gintry ko man ang best ko.),” Necor said in an interview with The PRISM Staff.

On the other hand, Silver Medalist, Christy PonAn of CTE-LHS, stated that she was a Doubles category player but was reassigned to Single B match because her teammate could not play due to the pressure.

CTE-LHS dominates CBA in Futsal finals, 6-0

With the team’s mini Tiki-Takalike style of play, the combined force of CTE and LHS managed to bring home the bacon versus CBA, 6-0, in the Futsal championship game last November 10 at UA Covered Gym.

During the first half, veteran defensive player of CTE-LHS, Angel Tabalanza, and team captain ball Elwen Mae Asoy, scored a goal, leaving CBA with a 2-0 lead.

CBA tried to penetrate through the opponent’s flank with their passing strategies, hoofs, and fast plays but opportunities to shoot were always denied by CTE-LHS’s strong man-on-man defense.

Successive goal scoring opportunities by Alexandria Galido, Daisymae Bernesto, and Angel Tabalanza ended the second half with a leading score 6-0, declaring CTE-LHS as the winning team.

“Our motivation in winning this game is, first of all, we have trust with each other and because of that trust, we were able to perform our plays successfully, and drive the team to the right direction. And above all, it was God. Ever since our first game, we sought God’s guidance. We asked him to be with us in all our games,” Asoy said in an after-game interview.

Daisymae Bernesto, one

of CTE-LHS’s goal scorers since their first game, also shared her experience in joining football tournaments, especially beach football as her starting point.

“It is already my hobby... I started with beach Football then ground Football, until I played Futsal. Other than that, Athletics is really my field,” she said.

“The reason why we got this championship was because we chose to be one. Sometimes we were chaotic but at least we made it through with understanding and communication. We worked together, treated each other equally, without the thought that we’re above another member,” Bernesto furthered when asked regarding the strength of their team.

CMS spikers triumph over CTE-LHS in Men’s Volleyball, 3-1

Arvin Christian Estomata and Chard Bin Pon-an delivered as the CMS spikers overcame the CTE-LHS in four sets, (3-1), of Men’s Volleyball Championship at University of Antique Traditional Knowledge Center on November 10.

CMS spikers emerged victorious with a zero-loss record during hugyaw 2022 volleyball playoffs, semi-final, and championship games against different colleges at UA Main Campus.

Even though CMS prevailed in the first set with a seven- point lead, (25-18), CTE-LHS opposite spiker, Ken Andrae Vista stunned Pon-an with a near-the-face hit as he unleashed a sharp crosscourt spike.

Moreover, each CMS spiker pitched scores during the second

set leading CMS to a double, (25-20), with Pon-an steering the team.

CTE-LHS spikers secured a gap of six points at the start of the third set due to CMS’ lack of reception and although Estomata and John Kenneth Garillos of CMS doubled their effort in net defense, CTE-LHS secured the third set, (23-25).

Also, the win of CTE-LHS in the third set arose as Gian Leong On of CMS landed a service error which led CTE-LHS to attain 25 points.

At the fourth and last set, spikers of CTE-LHS suffered a meltdown as CMS widened the gap at 9 points, (25-16), with Estomata delivering consistent solid down-theline hits over CTE’s middle blocker, Jethro Goboy.

“Firstly, our teamwork and connection with the setter [helped], and we trained for a long period of time because we wanted to bring the gold back to CMS (Una gid ang teamwork namun tapos ang connection namun sa setter kag buhay man ang amun training kay gusto gid namun magdaug kag gusto namun magbalik ang gold sa CMS),” Pon-an said in an interview with The PRISM.

Meanwhile, captain ball of CTE-LHS, Mark Gil Ardeno, said in The PRISM TV that they lacked communication inside the court while the other team was disciplined but Ardeno hopes that next year, the connection between athletes will improve.

UAeans celebrate UA’s conversion anniversary

UA celebrated its 13th conversion anniversary being one of the most important activities of Hugyaw week at UA Traditional Knowledge Center on November 10.

Thirteen years ago, November 10, 2009, the then Polytechnic State College of Antique (PSCA) was converted to University of Antique (UA): since then, the conversion day was celebrated on the 10th day of November every year.

“Someday students, after finishing your degrees, I hope that you will always be reminded of the past especially the people who helped you achieve what you [will have] become, and your universitythe University of Antique is one of those people,” UA President, Dr. Pablo S. Crespo Jr. said during the celebration.

He mentioned that one of

the many changes brought by the conversion of PSCA to UA is the opening of many programs and the increase in enrollment.

The school was founded in 1954 as Antique School of Arts and Trades (ASAT) and converted into

PSCA in 1982, and became UA in 2009.

On the other hand, Dr. Crespo announced during the program that there is a big possibility that we are going to have SCUAA by 2023.

VOX PAWPULI

STUDENTS’ SENTIMENTS REGARDING THE HUGYAW 2022

When I heard that Hugyaw will push through, we had problems at the departments but we solved it. There were many complicated things but through the process, it was solved by the council. In our department, most of the students were attentive but there were some that won’t attend because they are uninterested.

I just wish that those who lead the student body would have a sense of urgency because our tasks were delayed due to lack of announcement and incomplete information. The CCS provincial officers are under the national UASG.

My advise to all participants is even if you lose or win, just enjoy the game and enjoy hugyaw because this is the first hugyaw after the pandemic.

“This hugyaw is ok although it was not conducted in the last two years because of the pandemic. It is a pain for me to hear [ students’ sentiments on supplies] because I am the one that holds this post at our department. I just explain that there were students who could not pay because we announced the contribution late due that we waited for the PTA Meeting.

It was just a week after a typhoon so maybe they could foresee a way to boost the students’ morale. As provincial officers do so, sports coordinators should show their presence and that they support. To the faculty, maybe they should show that they are there supporting the athletes even if they are busy and the organizers may improve information dissemination as to where to see instructions and schedules of events.

If participants can hook the gold then go for it and if you want it then get it but if you know that you can’t then don’t pressure yourself.
