Patient Guide

This guide will assist you with preparing for your visit to The Surgical Hospital at Southwoods. If you have any questions about our services or your upcoming procedure, please feel free to call us at 330.729.8000 and we will be happy to assist you.
Pre-Operative Phone Interview and Assessment: A nurse from the hospital will contact you at least one day prior to your scheduled procedure. On that call you will be asked for the following information:
- Current health status
- Specific health issues
- Surgical and anesthesia history
- Current medications, including supplements and over-the-counter medications
- Allergies
- Allergic reactions
You may use the table below to organize your medications prior to the call.

The nurse will give you information to prepare for your procedure including: - Restrictions for eating or drinking after midnight the night before your surgery - Instructions on whether you can or cannot take routine medication

- The time you are to arrive at the facility the day of your procedure If you have not received your pre-operative call by 12:00 p.m. on the day before surgery, please contact us at 330.729.8100.
Pre-Admission Testing Depending on the procedure you are having and your health history, you may be required to come to the facility a few days prior to your procedure for a pre-admission visit, which may include:
- Lab Work
- EKG
- Imaging Exam
- Anesthesia Interview
Planning For Your Hospital Experience: All Patients:
Below are a few things you need to prepare before you arrive at the hospital:
- Bring your insurance card and photo ID
Pediatric Patients:
If your child is a patient, you will want to bring:
- An extra set of clothing
- A diaper bag with supplies needed for a young child
- If you have advanced directives or a living will, please bring a copy
- A bottle or special cup of your child’s favorite juice or formula
- If you have power of attorney or guardianship documentation, please bring a copy
- Make arrangements for a responsible adult to drive you home and remain with you for 24 hours following your procedure
- All jewelry must be removed prior to surgery
- Leave all valuables at home
- Your child’s favorite toy or blanket
- Another adult to assist you with your child in the car Please plan to remain at the hospital until your child is discharged.
Inpatient Services:
- Shower with an antibacterial soap and brush your teeth consistent with your normal routine
If your hospital experience requires a stay on the inpatient unit, you will want to bring:
- Personal care items
- Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing to the hospital
- Undergarments
- Do NOT smoke immediately before or after receiving anesthesia
- CPAP or BiPAP machine (if used at home)
- Case for glasses or dentures
Day of Procedure: Please arrive at the time provided to you on the pre-operative call or at your pre-admission testing visit. You will enter the facility at the entrance with the green canopy. A member of the Southwoods staff will greet you and provide you with further instructions on registering. You will be asked repeatedly for your name, date of birth and allergies. This process is for your safety and to assure proper identification. You will be escorted to the pre-operative area where your records will be reviewed and an initial assessment will be completed including temperature, pulse and blood pressure. The anesthesia staff will interview you. Please inform your nurse if you have experienced any of the following:
- Change in health status
- Cold or fever
- Persistent cough
- Rash
- Open area that is draining
Pain Management: Promoting patient comfort is a priority at The Surgical Hospital at Southwoods. The staff will frequently ask you to rate your pain throughout your stay. A rating of 1 to 10 or a face scale will be used to help you describe your level of pain. Although some pain is expected with any procedure, the staff is dedicated to working with you to manage your pain quickly. As a patient, you are the most important part of any pain management plan.
After Your Procedure:
Billing:
If you are having an outpatient procedure, the physician will update your family and friends after surgery. Our staff will help arrange any visits during recovery. Your physician will determine when you are ready to be discharged. You must have a responsible adult take you home and stay with you for 24 hours after discharge. You will be provided with the following:
You can expect to receive multiple bills based upon your procedure. These may include services provided by the following:
- Written discharge instructions
- Prescriptions and written information regarding new medications If your procedure requires a stay on the inpatient unit, you will be transferred to your room when you have sufficiently recovered from your anesthesia. Your family will speak with your physician after surgery. You will be reunited with your family in your inpatient room.
After Discharge: We anticipate your recovery to be uneventful. We will make a follow up call to inquire about your recovery. Please call your physician for a follow up appointment and if any of the following issues occur:
- You have questions or concerns
- Have excess bleeding or pain
- Fever over 100 degrees
- Persistent nausea or vomiting
- Severe swelling, tightness and/or warmth at incision site - Urinary frequency, burning or if you are unable to urinate
- Hospital
- Anesthesia Provider
- Pathology
- Radiology
- Physician(s) involved with your care

Special Needs: If you require special services, please inform our staff prior to your scheduled procedure. Any requests may be given at the time of the pre-operative call or by using our TTD phone number at 330.729.8085. Non-English speaking patients will have access to a language line if applicable.
