With the December acquisition of Chris Paul from the New Orleans Hornets, the Los Angeles Clippers served notice they were no longer Southern California’s “second” team. But the man who stands to benefit perhaps most from the superlative young point guard’s arrival will tell you the Clips are not there to compete with the Lakers. He’s Blake Griffin, the high-flying power forward who in his first season in the NBA last year averaged 22.5 points (12th in the league) and 12.1 rebounds (fourth) per game and amassed an impressive list of accolades. They include rookie of the year (the first unanimous choice since David Robinson in 1990) and all six Western Conference rookie of the month honors (the first sweep in that category since Paul in 2005-06), and he was voted a reserve for the West at the 2011 All-Star Game, where he also won the Slam Dunk Contest. Additionally, he led all rookies in points, rebounds and double-doubles, and at one point he set a franchise record with 23 consecutive games with double digits in points and rebounds. He’s also the rare physical specimen who can launch his muscular 6-foot-10-inch, 251pound frame to a 37-inch vertical leap. It’s little wonder Clippers fans are giddy at the prospect of Paul lobbing alley-oop passes to this sky-walking colossus. Griffin, Paul and the rest of the new-look Clippers can be seen in action on ESPN Wednesday, Jan. 11, in a home game against the Miami Heat.

Iron Chef Geoffrey Zakarian gets no time to gather rust
My chat with newly minted Iron Chef Geoffrey Zakarian was scheduled for 1:30 p.m., a few days after the premiere airing of his December victory on “The Next Iron Chef: Super Chefs.” He dialed in at precisely 1:30 p.m. “How’d I do?” he shouted. “Did I make it in time?” The mock anxiety reduced us both to laughter – me as a shameless superfan of the “Super Chefs” and Zakarian as the coolheaded culinary wizard who spent three months battling a merciless clock, ever-changing cooking conditions and a veritable carnival of ingredients to best nine of his fellow celebrity chefs to earn the coveted Iron Chef title. Zakarian, the silverhaired, bespectacled chef known best to Food Network audiences as a judge on “Chopped”
John Grisham is a brand name. Whether audiences have experienced “The Client,” “A Time to Kill” or “The Pelican Brief” in print or on film, the novelist’s law thrillers have had lasting impact. Now there’s fresh evidence: Almost 20 years after spawning a popular Tom Cruise movie, Grisham’s “The Firm” is the basis for an NBC series that has a two-hour premiere Sunday, Jan. 8, before settling into a weekly slot the following Thursday. Grisham is an executive producer on the project being made by Entertainment One (“Rookie Blue”) in association with Sony, with Josh Lucas shifting from movies (“J. Edgar”) to weekly TV by assuming the former Cruise role of lawyer Mitch McDeere. The show picks up 10 years after the original story with McDeere believing he’s safe after a nemesis dies in prison, so he emerges from witness protection with wife Abby (Molly Parker) and their young daughter (Natasha Calis) and relocates to Washington, D.C. Having barely survived his time with a corrupt Memphis firm, the attorney finds himself dealing with another law office apparently steeped
and “24 Hour Restaurant Battle,” says that as an Iron Chef, he won’t change the oft-risky game plan that occasionally won him the jurors’ ire on “The Next Iron Chef” but ultimately led to victory. “Others followed the challenges more than I did, but I don’t think anybody followed it exactly,” Zakarian says. “I cook the way I know how to cook. I don’t wrap myself around someone else’s expectations, because I don’t find that an honest way to be. I just wanted to stick to my gut and what I know in my heart. Sometimes it worked, and sometimes it didn’t. “And sometimes it worked a little better than others,” he says, laughing. What it didn’t do was earn the chef/partner of New York’s The Lambs Club and The National and Miami’s Tudor House a badly needed break. “ ‘Next Iron Chef’ taping started last April and ended in July,” Zakarian says. “The day I was anointed they said, ‘Congratulations! And by the way, filming for “Iron Chef” begins next week, and you have X amount of battles you gotta do!’ I was like, ‘What? I need a vacation!’ and they said, ‘You can take a vacation after.’ ”

Tricia Helfer (“Battlestar Galactica”) plays the chief of that practice, which aligns with McDeere’s smaller office on cases he tackles with his ex-con brother Ray (Callum Keith Rennie) and street-wise assistant Tammy (Juliette Lewis, in the part that first gained Holly Hunter an Oscar nomination). Thanks also to international sales, “The Firm” has a 22-episode guarantee, something very rare for a debuting series now. Grisham’s “The Client” was turned into a 1995-96 show, and the author admits in a conference call that situation “certainly gave me great hesitation” about turning another of his books over for series purposes. “It was such a dreadful show and painful experience, I didn’t want to do it again for a long time; I forgot about (doing) television over the years, though I never really forgot about film. The films have become difficult to make for a number of reasons, and I didn’t really think about ‘The Firm’ as a TV show until (fellow executive producer and former prosecutor) Lukas Reiter appeared on the scene and showd me a script. I thought it was very good, and I got excited about the idea of a weekly drama.”
“Chopped” fans worried they might not see Zakarian reunited with his fellow “Super Chefs” competitor and good friend Alex Guarnaschelli, take heart. The new Iron Chef has no plans to take a vacation from the show that made him a household name among food TV fans. “They haven’t called me yet, but they didn’t say no,” Zakarian says. “And if they didn’t say no, there’s a very good chance that I’ll be back on ‘Chopped.’ I really love that show. I can’t wait!” •What are you currently reading? “ ‘The Rational Optimist’ by Matt Ridley.” •What did you have for dinner last night? “I had canapes from my Iron Chef party and tons of champagne.” •What is your next project? “Probably something in Greenwich, Conn.” •When was the last vacation you took – where and why? “My last real vacation was two years ago when my family went to St. Barts for a week.”

“BOARDWALK EMPIRE: THE COMPLETE FIRST SEASON” HBO scored another immediate series success with this Prohibition-era drama, and its high pedigree – with Martin Scorsese as an executive producer and the director of the premiere, which earned him an Emmy – surely didn’t hurt. Steve Buscemi is excellent as politician Nucky Thompson, who moves among figures factual and fictional in the Atlantic City of the 1920s and ’30s; Michael Pitt, Kelly Macdonald, Michael Shannon and Paz de la Huerta also have pivotal roles. “MONEYBALL” Now faring well on the film award circuit, director Bennett Miller’s fact-based drama boasts a terrific performance by Brad Pitt as Oakland A’s general manager Billy Beane, who redefined the evaluation of on-field talent. He literally went by the numbers, with the help of a math whiz (Jonah Hill), in assembling an affordable yet effective team. Oscar winners Steven Zaillian (“Schindler’s List”) and Aaron Sorkin (“The Social Network”) wrote the screenplay that also provides good roles to Philip Seymour Hoffman – directed to an Oscar himself by Miller in “Capote” – and Robin Wright. “KILLER ELITE” A big revision of the Sam Peckinpah-directed 1975 James Caan-Robert Duvall melodrama, this update doesn’t shortchange on action ... especially since it’s been retooled for “Transporter” staple Jason Statham. He plays a Special Ops veteran who must rescue his mentor (Robert De Niro) from an equally skilled nemesis (Clive Owen) and several other enemies well trained in lethal methods. Yvonne Strahovski (“Chuck”) and Dominic Purcell (“Prison Break”) also are featured. War comes to ‘Downton Abbey’ as hit PBS miniseries returns Characters who previously obsessed over planning a perfect garden party are struggling with life-and-death issues as “Downton Abbey” begins a new season Sunday, Jan. 8, on PBS’ “Masterpiece Classic” (check local listings). The series, which bested such heavyweight competition as HBO’s “Mildred Pierce” remake to win Emmys as outstanding miniseries and for creator Julian Fellowes’ crackling scripts, opens two years after the conclusion of season one, with the Crawley family of Downton Abbey and its staff trying to cope with the challenges of World War I. For Lord Grantham (Hugh Bonneville), that involves frustration over not being allowed to serve on the front lines and being relegated to serving as an aristocratic morale booster on the home front, while all three of his daughters – Mary, Edith and Sibyl (Michelle Dockery, Laura Carmichael, Jessica Brown-Findlay) – are forced by events to grow up and make personal sacrifices for king and country. “That struck me as an interesting dynamic for the second series, taking these people that we know in peacetime from
the first series where the big issue was whether someone had stolen a snuffbox,” Fellowes says. “Suddenly, we fling them into a war where the big issue is are they going to be killed?” Of course, a large share of the “Downton” fan base is going to be focused most keenly on the strained relationship between Lady Mary Crawley and her cousin, Matthew (Dan Stevens), the designated heir to the Downton estate. And as season two opens, things do not look promising for the couple. “Mary returns from London, having spent time with Aunt Rosamund (Samantha Bond), and the first thing she hears is that Matthew is coming home, and Edith takes great pleasure in telling me immediately that he’s coming with his fiancee, which is a huge shock to Mary – and she discovers very quickly that Matthew has moved on and she needs to do the same,” Dockery says of the first episode. “And she introduces the family to a new character, Sir Richard Carlisle (Iain Glen), with whom she pursues a relationship hoping that she can move on, too. It’s very clear, though, that they’re together not for the right reasons ... .”

When you look at the photos of you as Drew Peterson, you’re not automatically recognizable, and you are creepy in this. Is that what you wanted?
A: That makes me so happy! Thank you. I had a great hair and makeup department, and it was really important for me. There is so much footage of Drew. He has been on every show, and everyone knows what he looks like, and yet you don’t want it to look like an “SNL” version. Q:
Is that a wig or your hair? An Internet site says you have been dyeing your hair for years. True?

Q: When the designers were presented with the weekly challenge, do you immediately start thinking about how you would do it? A: Every time someone would be eliminated, it was heartbreaking. I made it my business to tell each one of them (that) if I were in such a competition I would fail miserably because I take such a long time to harness my creative thoughts. Q:
So you do empathize with them?
A: I remember being in design school where they would give us challenges. It wasn’t until later years at Parsons that I excelled. The strongest of the All Stars were at their best at the end of the competition. Toward the end when it was just pure collection, you really got a chance to see the minds clicking.
A: That’s my hair, dyed gray, which is very, very hard to do, as it turns out – only one guy in Hollywood does it. I don’t color my hair. Getting the hair dyed took five hours.
Q:
What were the tougher challenges?
Q: Were you balancing this role while doing other work?
A: The shorter one where you only have 24 hours to do something automatically makes it tougher.
A: I was still shooting “Parks and Recreation.” During the last two weeks of “Parks and Recreation,” I would alternate with those two characters being diametrically opposed and then just the look. It was really an adventure, but the kind of adventure I dream about as an actor. Very few get to play Drew Peterson on a Wednesday and Chris Traeger on a Thursday.
Q:
And the easier ones?
A: There was this five-and-dime thing that was really fun.
That’s about going shopping and being inspired by something you see randomly. The other challenge I thought would be easy and fun was the theater one. (Designing a costume for “Godspell.”)
Q: Do you see substantial differences between “Project Runway” and this show?
Q:
What would Sam Seaborn of “The West Wing” be doing now?
A: It was such a pleasure doing this show. One thing they do have is a point of view. No matter who produces it, they really know what that show is about. They don’t have to discover any new things. They have it. You get deeper and deeper into the creative process.
A: When we last saw Sam, he was working for
President Santos. I think Sam might be running for office. He got his ass kicked in California’s 47th (district) and went back to Washington.
