Lost in the euphoria of the Pittsburgh Pirates’ first playoff appearance in 21 years in 2013 is the possibility that they may have discovered their best power hitter since Willie Stargell. His name is Pedro Alvarez, the lefty-swinging third baseman whose 36 home runs last year tied for the National League lead (with the Arizona Diamondbacks’ Paul Goldschmidt), thus making him the first Buc to top the NL in that category since the beloved “Pops” hit 44 in 1973. Drafted second overall by the Pirates in 2008, the 27-year-old product of New York’s Washington Heights neighborhood came with the reputation of having tremendous power born of lightning-quick wrists. He certainly showed that in his rookie season of 2010 by slamming 16 homers in 347 at-bats. After a forgettable 2011 that saw him optioned to the minors and hit .191, he cemented his place in the Pittsburgh lineup in 2012 with 30 home runs and 85 RBIs. Of course, the man known as “El Toro” (the bull, for his muscular physique) is far from a perfect player. His batting average is too low (.235 through four seasons), and he strikes out too much (366 times in 2012-13) and makes too many errors (27 each in 2012 and 2013). But he is known as a hard worker who is constantly trying to improve his game. And many think a 40-home-run season is in his future. Alvarez and the Bucs can be seen in action Monday, March 24, when they face the Detroit Tigers in a preseason game airing on ESPN2.

It’s all over for ‘Psych’

BY KATE O’HARE “Psych” concludes its eight-season run Wednesday on USA Network.

In upscale chain restaurant on a busy road in Manhattan Beach, Calif., not far from the production offices of the USA Network comedy-drama “Psych,” and roughly 1,286 miles from the show’s filming location in Vancouver, Canada, star James Roday and series executive producer Steve Franks get together for lunch to discuss not staying too long at the party. “For a lot of people,” quips Franks, “our second episode was too long at the party.” Obviously not for everyone, because the show airs it eighth-season – and series – finale on Wednesday, March 26, followed by the “Psych After Show,” a one-hour special hosted by Kevin Pereira (“Attack of the Show”) and featuring a Q&A with the cast and Franks, in front of a live studio audience in Los Angeles. For those who need to go do some binge viewing in a hurry, “Psych” features Roday (today sporting a full beard that’s about a half-inch short of edging into Old Testament patriarch territory) as Shawn Spencer, a native of Santa Barbara, Calif., who uses his Sherlock Holmes-level powers of deduction to convince people he’s a crime-fighting psychic. At his side are his best friend from childhood, Burton “Gus” Guster (Dule Hill); his ex-cop dad, Henry (Corbin Bernsen); detective girlfriend Juliet (Maggie Lawson); Police Chief Karen Vick (Kirsten Nelson, who directed the show’s musical episode, which aired in December); and idiosyncratic Detective Carlton Lassiter (Timothy Omundson). So without further ado, here are Franks and Roday on taking “Psych” out on a high note. On missing Vancouver ... Roday: “I personally, am not. I love Vancouver, truly, but I did spend, in all, four years over there – a whole presidential term, in hotels and apartments without air conditioning.” Franks (who has been staring intently at the sound-level indicators on the smartphone recording the conversation): “It also works as a hypnotist’s device.” On feeling good about the end of it all ... Roday: “We’re at peace with the decision to call it a show, because honestly, I feel like we did everything we could think of, just about. I always make a notebook every year of ideas that I want to do every season. I went back, and the ones we didn’t do, I don’t really feel like, ‘Oh, dang, we didn’t do that thing.’ ” Franks: “At the end of every year, James and I would get together, and we would talk about how we were going to push the boundaries of what the show was allowed to do each year. And, if we couldn’t figure out a way to push the boundaries any more, we both said, ‘OK, we’ll be done at that point.’ “And this year, we’re remaking one of our own episodes, and James’ zombie episode is so – it’s just so free. It’s completely free.”

erry Vincent has a wonderful can-do spirit borne from her childhood in the wilds of Australia. When people are that self-reliant, little fazes them, and that’s the perfect attitude for righting failing businesses. Vincent is the fixer on Food Network’s “Save My Bakery,” airing Wednesdays. She knows how wonderful a neighborhood bakery should be. “For me, when you walk into a bakery, any bakery, there becomes a sense of atmosphere,” she says. It goes beyond picking up a dozen rolls and a pie “but having an experience,” she says. A thriving bakery needs to stay true to its roots while offering a new experience, she says. “Everything is over the top, and people want instant gratification,” Vincent says. “The mums of the world are happy to keep going there to get a loaf of bread and a couple of Danish and go home. At end of the day you have this Catch-22. They want to lean over the counters and have a chat with and know all about cousins and babies, and the new customers are coming in and taking photos on phone.” Bakeries are often family affairs with everyone working hard. When people spend some 17 hours at the shop, they’re too tired to attend conventions and learn new ways, Vincent says. Yet people tell Vincent they don’t understand why their bakeries are failing, especially if they have been making the same popular recipes for 100 years. “Well actually they are not, because flour has changed, and sugar has changed,” she says. At this writing, Vincent had visited seven bakeries in the Northeast. She had not yet told people their bakeries were beyond saving. “But believe me, I am not afraid to say that,” Vincent says. “When you find people overextending themselves financially that they don’t ever understand maybe this isn’t the right thing for me to be doing, and dipping into savings that will make their old age miserable. I am not the old lady wandering in saying nasty things. I am the wake-up call, and sometimes I think if I don’t wake up them, they will have to close it themselves.”

‘Cleveland’ rocks another live episode as TV Land sitcom returns

TV Land’s first big success in original sitcoms is aiming to stay hot by starting a season live. “Hot in Cleveland” begins its fifth round the same way it came back in the middle of its fourth, with stars Valerie Bertinelli, Wendie Malick, Jane Leeves and Betty White performing the episode as viewers see it (in the Eastern half of the country) Wednesday, March 26. Immediately after, Season 3 of the “Cleveland” spinoff “The Soul Man” will debut the same way, with Cedric the Entertainer and his cast also going live. Linking the halves of the event, White and Cedric will appear in both series, to be shown on tape on the West Coast but with no modifications. “Hot in Cleveland” normally is done in front of a studio audience, but Bertinelli confirms

the live-telecast aspect doesn’t mean less nerves. “Oh, heck, no,” she says with a knowing laugh. “The jitters already started a month ahead. I love it because the energy is amazing, and then the show is done, then there’s just fun afterward, but it’s a little heart-pounding while you’re doing it.” Bertinelli recalls the first “Hot in Cleveland” live shot “went extremely well. There was one moment where Wendie had to get from one set to the next within five seconds, literally, and you could hear her running in the background to try to get to her entrance in time. It was actually quite funny, and it was hard for Jane and me not to giggle. Then at the end, we all just let go and had a big smile on our faces.”

Moreover, “the script was written as a farce,” she says, “so timing was everything. We didn’t have the luxury of really messing up, because it would break all the timing of each joke. I have a feeling that this time, if there are moments that give us the giggles, they’ll let that go to see what happens. I think most people were disappointed that we didn’t mess up.” According to Bertinelli, White remains the engine that powers the train on liveshow nights. “She’s her own animal, just a freak of nature, bless her. There is no way we can ever complain about anything – then again, why would we? – because that woman works her butt off. “She’s always going over her lines, being the ultimate pro. ... It’s like being in a master class with the best comedian ever.”
