Long-running musical set to end its run M AMMA MIA! the smash hit musical based on songs of ABBA plays at the Altria Theater on July 25 and 26 as part of its farewell tour. MAMMA MIA! Is one of the most successful musicals of all time, the eighth longest running show in Broadway history and one of only five musicals to have run for more than 10 years in Broadway and is currently in its 18th year. To date, MAMMA MIA! has been seen by over 60 million people worldwide, in 50 productions and in 16 different languages. MAMMA MIA! is distributed as a jukebox musical written by British playwright Catherine Johnson, based on the songs of ABBA, composed by Benny Anderson and Bjorn Ulvaeus, former members of the band. The title of the musical is taken from the group’s 1975 chart-topper, “Mamma Mia.” It is the story of Donna, an independent hotelier in the Greek islands. Edie Ashman Artist creates handcrafted jewelry

Richmond artist, Edie Ashman is one of those people that is happiest when she’s creating. Exploring many artistic avenues from a young age, the last 13 years she’s been focused on jewelry making and sells under the Edith Meriwether Designs moniker. Her line combines techniques of knit, crochet, macramé, bead weaving, and wire wrapping. In addition, she has a line of recycled jewelry, called her “Redeeming Charms”, made from old credit cards and store gift cards. Edie grew up on a farm, which at

the time, was on the outer fringes of Petersburg. Her grandparents lived just one field away on land that had been a Union encampment during the Civil War. Childhood days were spent at her grandparent’s farm, exploring, relic hunting and fishing. “It was a great way to grow up,” she explains. Influenced by her mom, grandmother and aunt, she took up sewing, crochet and leather crafting all before the age of 10 years old. She continued to dabble in various techniques adding macramé, knitting, cross stitch, embroidery, needlepoint, beading and more. After attending high school, Edie attended University of Virginia

then worked several years in advertising. Once having children, she stopped working in the advertising world and began exploring working for herself, letting her creative juices flow. Ashman now focuses exclusively on jewelry making. She sells to retailers and has had work at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts gift shop. She primarily sells her jewelry at craft sales like Arts in the Park in Richmond. Edie works during the week, creating her jewelry and attends craft shows and Farmers Markets almost every weekend of the year. She is beginning to back off a bit, wanting to have some free time to spend with family and

Henrik Stenson defends Open Championship The 146th Open Championship, commonly referred to as The British Open, gets underway Thursday on GOLF from Royal Birkdale Golf Club in Southport, Merseyside, near Liverpool, England where Swedish golfer Henrik Stenson hopes to defend his title. This is the third Major on the 2017 PGA Tour. Stenson had a brilliant and record-setting tournament last year, which took place at the Royal Troon Golf Club in Scotland. He entered the final round tied with Phil Mickelson, but pulled away with a three shot lead, making him the only male Swede to win a Major. Actually, Stenson had a very successful summer in 2016. He followed up his Major title with a Silver Medal at the Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, losing to Justin Rose by two stokes. Stenson, who now lives in Orlando, Florida, turned pro in 1998 and joined the PGA Tour in 2007. Last year’s

By the time any movie franchise hits its third chapter, it had better have something new to put forth, The animated “Cars 3” falls back on familiar themes, but in the Disney-Pixar tradition, it makes enough clever use of real-world topics to be entertaining enough for its latest spin around the track ... and also more than a little poignant, well before it reaches its home stretch. Owen Wilson again supplies the voice of Lightning McQueen. the plucky vehicle whose star may be fading, as suggested by his surprise loss in a race to a much sleeker machine voiced by Armie Hammer. The dismayed Lightning then has to decide

whether he has enough juice left to keep running, or if it’s time for him to get and stay off the track. He gets inspiration from a training car with the voice of comedian Cristela Alonzo (who had her own ABC sitcom for a brief shining season). And in a move that fans of the late Paul Newman will appreciate, his voice is invoked again as his character from the first film appears to Lightning as an encouraging vision. That is no small element of “Cars 3,” and it’s actually quite clever that the filmmakers incorporate it. Littlefinger plays the ‘Game of Thrones’ mainly for kicks, says Aidan Gillen

When last we saw Petyr Baelish (Aidan Gillen), the cunning character known to many as Littlefinger on “Game of Thrones,” he was planning to sow discord between the recently reunited Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner) and Jon Snow (Kit Harington). That scheme may be just one of several Baelish contrives in Season 7 of the epic fantasy, which premieres Sunday, July 16, on HBO. It’s all part of his determined quest to seize the Iron Throne of Westeros, but is this complicated character driven by a lust for power or a desire for revenge against those who have wronged him? Probably neither, says Baelish’s real-life alter ego. “I don’t think it’s anything really nihilistic,” Gillen says. “It isn’t a quest for power and ‘I want to own and rule everything.’ As much as anything, it’s about really enjoying playing around with people and having his way with them, watching his plans unfold. He also likes the danger of it, I think. It’s about playing the game and loving it, being addicted to that, like a compulsion.” It’s also driven by a determination never to be humiliated again like he was as a teenager, when the older Brandon Stark gravely wounded Baelish in a duel over Catelyn Stark, Sansa’s late mother. “Brandon Stark sliced him in that duel, then wouldn’t even finish him off, which was the ultimate humiliation,” the actor explains. “So he’s

coming from a place of being humiliated way back when he actually was a sweet boy. It’s not so much a revenge on the world he seeks, he just wants to make sure that never happens again.” Gillen also doesn’t think Baelish harbors romantic feelings for Sansa. “Honestly, I think a lot of people have made more of that than is actually the case,” he explains. “I think both Baelish and Sansa are using each other and each is aware of what the other is doing, and they both enjoy it. As far as romance goes, it’s just not that clear cut. There are shades of that in there, and I don’t always want to explain everything. It’s whatever you make of it, but that relationship is a bit ‘something else.’ Of course, Baelish has enjoyed watching Sansa bloom under his tutelage into the player that she is. She’s quite a strong, clever, manipulative person herself.” The actor says he would consider reprising his role in a “Games” spinoff, but he thinks it more likely HBO is looking for a prequel. “Also, there are so many other very interesting characters that we haven’t seen much of,” he adds. “You could do a ‘Rosencrantz and Guildenstern (Are Dead)’ thing that would be a very interesting way of opening up this world via some lesser players. But it’s a rich world and we know that people love it and have a big appetite for it.”

The sitcom days when Craig Ferguson ‘Drew’ upon his humor

Q: Was Craig Ferguson always a regular on “The Drew Carey Show”? – Pete Ralston, Columbus, Ohio A: He joined the ABC sitcom (now seen in repeats on Laff) in its second season, in 1996 – as the fictionalized Drew’s boss, Mr. Wick – and remained a regular cast member through the eighth, then made two guest appearances in the show’s ninth and final year. The two performers have maintained ties to each other since, a very notable example being the switch they made between their CBS shows on April Fools’ Day in 2014. Ferguson filled in for Carey as host of that day’s episode of “The Price Is Right,” while Carey sat behind the desk that night on the then-Ferguson-hosted “Late Late Show.”

When a series ends, some actors can find themselves going through a bit of withdrawal when they’re forced to put down a character they created and inhabited for a number of years. But Corey Stoll, who plays troubled hero Dr. Ephraim “Eph” Goodweather on the FX sci-fi thriller series “The Strain,” which opens its fourth and final season Sunday, July 16, probably isn’t one of them. “Yes and no,” the 41-year-old native New Yorker says with a laugh. “I mean, it was definitely sad saying goodbye to the cast and crew. I think as we were winding down, we were looking down and realizing what a really great group of people had been assembled, and that was really a bittersweet ending. But I think the fact that the writers knew from the beginning of the season that this was the end really enabled them to write a satisfying conclusion to the character. So I felt like there wasn’t any loose ends, which is I think pretty rare in television.” As the new season begins, the world is in darkness following the nuclear blast at the end of Season 3. The ensuing nuclear winter has liberated the strigoi and allowed them to move around during daytime and enabled the Master to establish a totalitarian regime. Most humans now work for the strigoi with the understanding that they must either collaborate or die. As iconic as he is for “Star Trek,” William Shatner actually had a longer television run with this police drama from genreveteran producers Aaron Spelling and Leonard Goldberg. Hooker is a nononsense ex-detective who returns to a regular Los Angeles beat with a rookie partner (Adrian Zmed). Heather Locklear – who was working on “Dynasty” for Spelling at the same time – and James Darren joined the regular cast in the second season. As one might anticipate with Shatner as the star here, Leonard Nimoy turned up in a second-season episode (and also directed another one); Sharon Stone guest stars in a Season 4 story meant as the pilot for a spinoff series that didn’t happen. ››› (Not rated: AS, V)
